IDA Annual Conference

Y LEARNING B S E K THE LA

Dear Colleague The Annual Conference for 2011 moves to a new location in beautiful County Cavan. The Slieve Russell Hotel and Country Club is the venue for next year’s conference from May 12 to 15, 2011. The hotel has a state-of-the-art conference centre, excellent accommodation and leisure facilities, and a championship golf course on the doorstep. The emphasis will be on learning and fun in a wonderful tranquil setting. Our visiting speakers include: Fred Barnett – Programme Director of the Postdoctoral Endodontic Programme at the Albert Einstein Medical Centre, Philadelphia. Esmonde Corbet – Professor of Periodontics at the University of Hong Kong. Brid Hendron – Runs a private practice in Northern Ireland and will present on improving communication skills in the dental team. Harald Heymann – Professor and Director of Graduate Operative Dentistry at the UNC School of Dentistry, North Carolina. Richard Ibbetson – Director of the Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute and Chair of Primary Dental Care at the University of Edinburgh. In addition, a talented group of home-based speakers will present on a variety of interesting topics. Friday afternoon’s programme is devoted to the entire dental team. Our motivational speaker is Sean McGowan, who earlier this year became the first Irishman to row solo across the Atlantic! Once again, we welcome the involvement of our dental trade colleagues who will showcase the most up-to-date materials, equipment and services on Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14, at our trade show. Attendance at the conference guarantees dental practitioners their entire annual CPD requirements for 2011. There will also be presentations in all three core CPD subject areas of infection control, oral radiology and medical emergencies. The conference will include a varied social programme, including cultural events, golf and our annual dinner on Saturday May 14, along with a fun night for all on Thursday May 12. Remember to include ‘Cavan – Learning by the Lakes’ in the 2011 diary for you and all your dental team. We look forward to welcoming you to Cavan in May 2011!

THURSDAY MAY 12

PRE-CONFERENCE COURSES

1. Conservative aesthetic and restorative dentistry – a potpourri for clinical success Prof. Harald Heymann 9.00am – 5.00pm Following attendance at this course, the participant should be able to: 1. Distinguish between the many new enamel-dentine adhesives (including stress-breaking liners and selfetching primers), and describe their clinical performance based on clinical research. 2. Describe the causes of dentinal sensitivity and identify appropriate techniques for effecting desensitisation. 3. Relate the best ways to achieve success with posterior composite restorations. 4. Describe the uses of new chemotherapeutic materials, such as ACP, xylitol and probiotics, in the treatment of high caries risk patients. 5. Identify the various types of vital bleaching products and procedures (in-office, home and OTC), along with their indications, contraindications and efficacy. 6. Describe conservative concepts for replacing missing anterior teeth using all-porcelain bonded pontics. 7. Describe the clinical technique involved in preparing and delivering etched porcelain veneers. 8. Identify time-proven, research-validated methods for pulp capping. 9. Relate the various methods for treating white spot lesions.

2. Advanced endodontics – lecture and workshop Dr. Fred Barnett

9.00am – 5.00pm

Endodontic techniques have undergone revolutionary changes in the past several years. If the techniques that you currently use in practice were acquired more than five years ago, they may be outmoded and less efficient than more contemporary methods. This lecture and hands-on workshop will provide an opportunity to update participants and familiarise them with the latest advances in molar endodontics. Upon completing this course, you will be prepared to perform endodontics in a more straightforward and successful manner. Topics to be covered: n contemporary coronal and radicular access in molars; n the use of ultrasonics to uncover hidden anatomy; n the use of the Twisted File®; n resin-based root filling materials; and, n thermoplastic filling techniques.

3. Problem solving in restorative dentistry Prof. Richard Ibbetson

9.00am – 5.00pm

This day-long course is divided into two halves. In the morning, participants will have the opportunity to analyse the records of two different patients presenting with complex problems in restorative dentistry. Casts, radiographs, case histories and photographs will be provided to allow diagnoses and formulation of a treatment plan. These will then be discussed. The afternoon session will take the form of a quiz. This will focus on decision-making in restorative dentistry: a wide range of problems and clinical scenarios will be presented with excellent opportunities for discussion and interaction.

4. Medical emergencies (half-day) Dr. Alison Dougall

2.00pm – 5.00pm

Prevention is the most effective strategy for coping with medical emergencies. It must be remembered, however, that despite all efforts at prevention, EMERGENCIES will happen and there are five steps that minimise the likelihood of serious consequences developing if a medical emergency should arise in your practice: 1. Knowing the underlying medical history. 2. Evaluating the patient correctly. 3. Having knowledge and confidence in how to use emergency/rescue medication. 4. Keeping up to date with CPR techniques. 5. Regularly practising scenarios with your team. This course will cover all of the above and will include hands-on practice at diagnosing different emergency situations and administering drugs for the managment of conditions such as angina, anaphylaxis, hypoglycaemia and epilepsy. CPR update and emergency scenarios will also be covered.
