I
t’s a new year, and with it comes all the promise of fresh starts and life-changing resolutions. We all like to set out our goals for the months ahead, but whatever you do, don’t make too many commitments. Make sure that you have time to relax and enjoy a measured start to the year ahead. That’s why we recommend you take things easy over the next few months. It’s all about pampering yourself and making sure that your physical and mental wellbeing comes first. Starting on page 24, we take you on a tour of some of the best spa retreats across the network, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and enjoying the good life instead. If you are looking for something a little more active to offset the chilled vibe of a spa, why not head to one of
the brilliant parks we have here on the network, many of which are located in the country’s major cities. Whether you are looking for a quiet walk, a run around with the family or the chance to interact with some proper wildlife, there’s an urban space near one of our stations that's ideal for you. Lastly, to tie in with Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, we explore the Arthurian myth and look at the places in the south west and Wales where Arthur spent time – or did he?

Situated in London’s historic East End, Wilton’s Music Hall theatre looks much as it did during its 19th-century heyday. Following many years of careful conservation work, the world’s oldest remaining music hall was reopened to much applause in 2015. It now presents a large variety of plays, opera, puppetry, classical music, cabaret, dance and magic shows. A programme of talks and tours also helps tell the story of Wilton’s incredible encore as one of the city’s theatrical hidden gems. WHAT

KING ARTHUR Charlie Hunnam (from the TV series Sons of Anarchy) as a buff, unshaven Arthur who grows up scrapping in the back passages of olde Londonium. Once Arthur has grabbed hold of the magical sword Excalibur – a key part of the myth first popularised by The Sword in the Stone, T.H. White’s 1938 novel of Arthur’s boyhood – our hero realises his true kingly destiny lies in overthrowing wicked tyrant Vortigern (played by Ritchie’s old Dr Watson, Jude Law). If this all sounds like King Arthur: Legend of the Sword has taken some diabolical liberties with Arthurian myth, well, it’s worth remembering that the classic story of Arthur and Guinevere and Sir Lancelot and Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table is itself stitched together from many different and often contradictory literary sources, dating back as far as AD 594. And while there’s scant historical evidence that a real fifth-century warrior king named Arthur did lead the fight against the Anglo-Saxon invaders, it’s still great fun to visit some of the many different sites that have become entwined with the legend over the years.

It was Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his Historia Regum Britanniae (‘History of the Kings of Britain’) circa 1136 ,who first identified Tintagel in Cornwall as the place where Arthur was conceived. Tintagel Castle, originally constructed in 1233 for Richard, Earl of Cornwall, had by the 15th-Century ‘officially’ become the place of both Arthur’s conception and his birth. Today, the ruins of Tintagel Castle are maintained by English Heritage, who offer visitors a complete Arthurian experience, including an exhibition on Tintagel’s varied past, and an outdoor interpretation of the ruins that takes in a walk along the South West coast.

Cornwall has many other links to Arthurian legend. At Slaughterbridge, an inscribed stone is said to mark the spot where King Arthur died fighting his enemy Mordred during the Battle of Camlann.
There is now an Arthurian Centre at Slaughterbridge, a nature trail, gift shop and play castle. And nearby is the ancient town of Camelford, one of a number of ‘real Camelot’ candidates.

Windsor Great Park NEAREST GWR STATION IS WINDSOR CENTRAL King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is the first installment in a planned series of six movies covering the whole of the Arthurian saga. It was filmed at a number of different British locations, including Snowdonia in Wales and the Scottish Highlands. Filming actually kicked off in February 2015, at Windsor Great Park. This massive Royal Park dates back as far as the 13th century and encompasses acres of unspoilt woodland. The park also offers visitors historical monuments, abundant wildlife, an award winning visitor centre, cafés and restaurants, as well as the chance to enjoy a spot of mountain biking, horse riding or fishing in unspoilt surroundings. With such a supremely photogenic location, it’s no surprise that King Arthur: Legend of Sword is far from being the first film to make use of the park. Scenes for The King’s Speech, Bridget Jones’s Baby and the Harry Potter and Pirates of the Carribean movies were all shot here too.

WORCESTER Find heritage on the high street of this great cathedral city WHY GO THERE?
The city of Worcester is steeped in history and brimming with beautiful buildings. Worcester is notably the site of the Battle of Worcester, the final English Civil War clash between Cromwell and King Charles II. The city is also something of a sporting hotspot. It is home to arguably the most picturesque county cricket ground in the country, and one of Britain's oldest racecourses, which has been hosting racing since 1718. WHERE DO I START?
Begin by taking a scenic amble along the River Severn that winds its way through the middle of the city. Make sure you stop off at Worcester Cathedral, the resting place of King John, who famously accepted the terms set out in Magna Carta.
WHERE SHOULD I KIP?
Take time to reflect at Browns at the Quay, a chic luxury hotel with a great riverside location. Guests receive a glass of champagne on arrival. WHAT’S HIP?
Sample the many craft beers and cocktails on offer at the Hand in Glove pub and then dance the night away at the Velvet nightclub. For the day after, recharge with a cuppa at G & Tea, an excellent vintage tearoom tucked away on the historic Friar Street. IF I DO ONE THING?

Very small children love St Bride’s too, although the Good Spa Guide’s Best Spa in Wales is an adults only space, and as guests pre-book spa and hydrotherapy pool time, you can happily lie back on the underwater beds and drift off knowing you won’t be disturbed. The hotel can arrange babysitting and tee times at nearby Tenby Links. WEB

relaxed Regency home, now a haven of calm with an art studio available to guests. From their base in the historic village of Piddletrenthide (named after the river that runs through the garden), the couple, a trained counsellor and practising artist, are offering mindfulness and meditation retreats and art as therapy

The area itself is part of the Ridgeway trail, famous for a string of ancient burial mounds as well as a giant figure of the real Duke carved into the chalk hillside that’s visible from miles around. So if you keep promising yourself that you’ll pick up your pen or paintbrush once the kids are asleep, South House’s childfree atmosphere might be exactly what you need to get inspired all over again.

ACCESS ALL AREAS: WALES If you know someone affected by cancer or any sort of disability, you’ll probably know how much of an impact it can have on everyone involved. Even a visit to a spa or swimming pool becomes a challenge, as most venues are reluctant to offer spa services – except for mani- or pedicures – to anyone undergoing chemo or radiotherapy, or who is in remission. Happily, two forwardthinking spas in Wales are actively looking to help patients and carers.

Fish pie is a family favourite for the cold winter months RECIPE
Baked fish pie with fennel and potato
TOP FARE by mitch tonks
Pick up the perfect pie
Enjoy a slice of classic comfort food Simonetti, serves some great seafood, including their own fish pie. Robert makes it using an old family recipe.
One thing I really love at this time of year is a good fish pie. At Rockfish we have just launched a fish pie cooked in shortcrust pastry with a puff pastry lid. It’s a delicious twist on the traditional mashtopped pie. We also have a version using wonderful Torbay scallops and locally smoked bacon, all cooked in a white sauce with plenty of parsley inside a pastry pie case – delicious, especially with the fried pickles on the side. Simply fish I’m far from alone in wanting to eat fish pie all the time. Simply Fish in Brixham, a popular bistro and takeaway owned by local fish merchants Robert and Kelly
the mariners Further down the seafood coast at Nathan Outlaw’s pub The Mariners you can expect to find another superb version
To make First make a vegetable stock by putting the leek, the wine, half an onion, the peppercorns, the carrot and the celery in a pan. Cover with about 500-600ml water and bring to the boil and simmer for about 20 minutes. Allow to cool. While the stock is being made, gently soften the fennel, the sliced onion and the fennel seeds in olive oil in a pan on the simmering plate, until caramelised – you may add a splash of
of the fish pie. Nathan and his team really know how to cook and sitting in the bar overlooking the Camel Estuary after a few oysters, a pint or two of Sharps and a bubbling fish pie made from the best of Cornish seafood, makes it is well worth the journey.
wine or water to help the cooking if needed, but be sure to allow it to evaporate. Cook the vegetables until they are really soft and golden. Once the stock is ready, melt the butter and add the flour to make a smooth paste, the consistency of double cream. Pour on the simmered stock gently, constantly stirring until you have quite a thick sauce. Season with black pepper and a splash of anchovy sauce.
You will need (SERVES 4) *1 leek, chopped *Splash of white wine *1 onion, half of it sliced *4-5 black peppercorns *1 carrot, chopped *2 sticks of celery, chopped *2 fennel bulbs, sliced finely, keeping the root and the top trimmings *1 tsp fennel seeds *Olive oil *25g butter *Some flour *Black pepper *A splash of anchovy sauce (optional) *200g salmon fillet, cut into cubes *200g coley fillet, cut into cubes *150g small peeled frozen prawns *Enough mashed potato to cover your dish with about 25cm of topping *Handful of chopped parsley
Butter the bottom of your pie dish and put the fish in. Pour over the sauce, leaving enough room for the potato and fennel topping. Mix the fennel and its juices with the mashed potato, spread on top of the pie and brush with a little butter. Season with black pepper – you can sprinkle a little Parmesan over it too if you like. Bake for 15-20 minutes in a hot oven. Turn down the heat and cook for a further 20-30 minutes.

You’re spoiled for choice with the parks ON OFFER IN LONDON HYDE PARK
Can you hear these sounds? The thump of boots on the ground, splashes as swimmers break the Serpentine’s surface, hoots of laughter from the playground and the gentle chirrup of birds? Those are the calls of Hyde Park, one of London’s biggest outdoor spaces and one of the capital’s eight Royal Parks.
LEAFY
Strolls
Visitors can while away an entire day exploring the 350 acres of greenery this park has to offer. From embarking on a self-guided walk round the many monuments, fountains and statues, to indulging in a spot of lunch at the Lido Bar and Café, you’ll find something different to enjoy every time you visit.
RICHMOND PARK
Richmond Park is a beautiful National Nature Reserve, but you may know it better as the backdrop to a world famous YouTube clip. In it, a frantic pet owner chases after his dog Fenton, as the Labrador attempts to herd some of the park’s 630 red and fallow deer. These stunning animals have been roaming freely on the grounds since 1539 and they play a major role in the park’s history. Visitors come from far and wide to see the wild deer in their natural habitat, as well as to explore the many winding paths, trails and hilly routes that can be found in this picturesque setting.
LEE VALLEY
Whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a surefooted hike, Lee Valley offers 26 miles of trails for visitors to experience. There’s also a guided monthly walk on the first Sunday of every month which is led by one of the park’s Rangers. No booking is required and it is completely free to join in with. An award-winning open space, Lee Valley was created as a ‘green lung’ for London, Essex and Hertfordshire and aims to connect these communities with activities in a peaceful environment.
London has lots of brilliant green spaces to unwind in
With woods, lakes, wild flowers and wildlife in abundance, this is an outdoor space where modern, open grounds sit alongside history and heritage in absolute harmony.
HAMPSTEAD HEATH Londoners love ‘The Heath’ because it has some of the best views of the city. At the top of Parliament Hill, which is an area of parkland in the south-east corner of Hampstead Heath, you’ll be able to see many of the capital’s famous landmarks
Relax by the banks of the River Lee
including the Shard, the Gherkin, St Paul’s Cathedral and even the Houses of Parliament (if you squint your eyes a bit). There’s a wonderful atmosphere here and you’ll often see kite flyers, runners and walkers making the most of this ancient park. On the eastern side, off Millfield Lane, are three large freshwater swimming ponds known as the Hampstead Ponds or Highgate Ponds – one for men, one for women and another for mixed bathing. Whether you dive into the chilly waters head first, or prefer to dip in inch by inch, you’ll usually have an admiring audience of ducks watching your aquatic efforts.

There’s a small children’s playground for the kids to tear around and other amenities are available, such as tennis courts and a skatepark. give me five The actor, writer and comedian chats about taking over the reins from Sandy Toksvig
Miles Jupp
New News Quiz host Miles Jupp enjoys the sound of silence on GWR
How did you get involved in comedy? Originally I wanted to become an architect, but as a teenager I used to watch the likes of Jack Dee and Eddie Izzard at comedy clubs. I suppose I got involved in comedy through watching so much of it. While studying divinity at Edinburgh University, I joined the comedy troupe, The Introverts, and gave stand up a go myself. The comedy circuit in Scotland at the time included the likes of Frankie Boyle and Susan Morrison. They were doing their own things, which I think is crucial when trying to stand out – you’ve got to find your own niche.

Having played Archie in Balamory, Nigel in Rev, and John Duggan in The Thick of It, which roles have really stuck with you? These characters changed my life really. I was just a 22-year-old student doing stand up when I started playing Archie in Balamory. Turning up on set I didn’t expect to do much, but I think we covered about 25 scripts and filmed eight episodes a week. Before The Thick of It, I hadn’t done anything in ages. The role came completely out of the blue and suddenly I was part of a really talented team of people. My role in Rev sort of stemmed from that.
You took over from Sandy Toksvig as chair on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz in 2015. Was it an intimidating position to take on? It was a bit. Given that the show is now in its 89th series, it has a lot of history behind it. When I took over from Sandy, my gut feeling was that I just had to get on with it. I’d hosted quite a few radio programmes and had previously been on The News Quiz about 20 times as a panellist, so it wasn’t totally unknown territory.

What can audiences expect from your new stand up show Songs of Freedom? It’s about a man slightly adrift from the world. It’s about not taking the usual root to happiness and being baffled by things that people generally take as straightforward. It deals with the problems that arise with being too polite and a few professional embarrassments, that sort of stuff.
Describe your ideal day out on the GWR Well first of all I’d make sure that everyone in the silent coach obeyed the rules. Then I’d head to Taunton to watch the cricket before visiting the Castle Hotel for one of their tasting menus. I’d then go and see a show at the Taunton Brewhouse Theatre & Arts Centre. That would be my dream day.
Miles will take his Songs of Freedom tour to venues across the network, including Brighton on 3 February, Bristol on 14 February and London on 25 February. Visit milesjupp.co.uk for more dates. Miles has played a number of small parts in films such as The Legend of Tarzan, The Monuments Men, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Miles recorded the role of Blackberry for the new BBC and Netflix television adaptation of Richard Adams’ 1972 novel Watership Down, coming this year.
