bill smith Welcome
Executive Director’s Welcome Looking Ahead 2015 Since we are starting the new year, I thought I would address what to expect in 2015. The MSGA new year unofficially begins in November at our Annual Meeting wherethe Board of Directors and Officers are elected. This year we welcomed one new member to the Board, that being Ted Florenz of Chartwell G& CC as the 9th Vice President. In addition, Thomas P. Whelan of Manor Country Club was elected President for the year 2015. As is tradition, the Maryland Amateur Championship will be conducted June 11- 14at the President’s home club, which in this case will be Manor Country Club in Rockville, MD. Other major Championship venues include the Maryland Open at Columbia CC, July 13-15; Mid-Amateur Championship at the Elkridge Club, August 10-11; the Senior Amateur Championship September 8-9 at Lakewood CC and the Senior Open at The Courses at Andrews Air Force Base, October 13-14, 2015. The full schedule of championship events and dates is available on our website at www.msga.org. Last year marked our third year of scheduling one day Play Days at various private clubs in the state and they have proved to be very popular events for golfers of all skill levels. The Play Days are open to both men and women with prizes in multiple categories. This year we have scheduled plays days at five venues including Towson G&CC, Rolling Road GC, CC at Woodmore, Montgomery CC and Sparrows Point CC. Dates for these play days are on our schedule at www.msga.org. “Maryland State Golf” the electronic magazine of the MSGA which was introduced in 2012 will continue to cover all MSGA Championships in addition to articles about our member clubs, club professionals, club superintendents and interviews with leading players among a host of other golf related pieces. The magazine along with all of our services are available on our website at www.msga.org. One of the areas where the MSGA has enhanced our services to the golfers of Maryland that we encourage you to take a look at is related to handicap services. You can now get your handicap revision update twice a month by email by clicking on the icon and signing up on our website. Another great handicap service is the mobile app for your smart phone which allows you to post your scores and look up other golfer handicap records. Information about the app is provided on our website. Once again this year, the MSGA will offer our discount golf program known as the Patron Program. For details click on the icon on the home page of our website. Towards the end of the year, the MSGA began a national search for a new Director of Rules and Competitions. The MSGA received many applications which the selection committee reviewed and short listed eight for telephone interviews. Following the telephone interviews the committee reduced the field to three for personal interviews, the results of which led to Kellon Newland, PGA being selected as our Director of Rules & Competition. Kelly comes to us from Louisville, KY where he conducted tournaments for both the PGA section and the Kentucky Golf Association. The staff and volunteers of the MSGA are looking forward to an exciting year of golf, and hope all of you have many successful and rewarding rounds of golf.

(ST. AUGUSTINE, FL) – WE ARE GOLF – a coalition of the game’s leading associations and industry partners – today announces the eighth annual National Golf Day will be held Wednesday, April 15 on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Golf’s leaders will meet with Members of Congress, the Executive Branch and federal agencies to discuss golf’s nearly $70 billion economy, $4 billion annual charitable impact and many environmental and fitness benefits. Throughout the day, participants will share stories about the game’s nearly 15,000 diverse businesses, two million employees, tax revenue creation, tourism and ecological value. National Golf Day in May 2014 was the most successful to date with over 120 scheduled Congressional meetings in one day. Globally, the #NGD14 Twitter campaign eclipsed 16 million impressions and reached 7.4 million accounts, including 787,000 users in a onehour span. “Planning for golf’s much anticipated return to Capitol Hill is in full swing and we look forward to an even more successful event in 2015,” said Steve Mona, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of World Golf Foundation, administrator of WE ARE GOLF. “The primary goal
as an industry is to make sure our voice is heard in Washington, D.C. to ensure laws and regulations that impact the golf industry are fair and appropriate.” In addition, Mike Hughes, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA), was recently named WE ARE GOLF Board Chairman for 2015. He succeeds Rhett Evans, CEO of the Golf Course Superintendents Association, who served as the 2014 Board Chairman. He previously served as Executive Committee Chairman for GOLF 20/20 as well as the Board of Governors for the National Golf Foundation and Advisory Board for the World Golf Hall of Fame. “National Golf Day is an ideal opportunity for the industry to collaborate on important issues and meet with legislative decision-makers to preserve and enhance the image of golf,” said Hughes. “It’s important for the game to have a unified voice so a true picture is painted for Congressional leaders.” To join the conversation, visit the WE ARE GOLF social media hub. How does your business continue to find growth in the current golf economy?
2.
It does not matter what kind of business someone is in, if a company consistently delivers on its promise to consumers, you will organically create a following of loyal customers. At GolfTEC, if our students succeed then we succeed. We’ve developed a systematic approach to game improvement that involves “five factors:”fact-based diagnosis, sequential lessons, video-based practice, advanced retention tools, and precision-fit clubs. Using this system our students have seen a 95% success rate. When golfers start to see their hard work turn into clear results on the course, they are going to continue to work with our coaches. When one of our students starts to play better golf, their buddies always want to know what the secret is. Referrals are big part of our business.
What does GolfTEC do to stay ahead of the curve? We are constantly revamping and improving our systems and technology. If you visit anyof our locations you will see top-of-the-line equipment and state-of-the-art teaching tools. This includes our patented g-SWING technology that simultaneously provides video and motion measurements of the golf swing. By quantifying the mechanics of theswing we have the facts for guiding and measuring swing changes. Our GolfTEC To Go mobile application brings another dimension to improvement by letting students submit video of their swing from the course or wherever they are practicing and receive detailed instruction back from their coach.

Joe Assell Five Questions 25 Share
How has GolfTEC taken steps to ensure its longevity in the golf industry? There has been some sour news in the golf industry of late with the firing of hundreds of golf professionals and the shrinking of a few prestigious companies, but at GolfTEC we have found another year of growth. We are so bullish on the future of our business specifically, and opportunities within golf generally, that we plan to hire up to 100 PGA Professionals over the next six months. This is a practical approach. It recognizes PGA Professionals are the world’s best instructors, and that the success of GolfTEC is built on making better golfers.
4.
PGA Professionals have propelled a 100% increase in our company’s revenues over the last five years. During that time, we gave millions of lessons to hundreds of thousands of golfers who visited a GolfTEC Coach at one of our nearly 200 locations.
What role does GolfTEC play in terms of growing golf’s participation rates? I am very optimistic about the state of our game. If we at GolfTEC can continue to improve the games of every one of our students, this will result in more golfers excited, ready and able to play great golf. These committed individuals will no doubt be looking to play more rounds and buy new equipment. We look at the industry as a cohesive unit. By building better and more involved players, GolfTEC improves the bottom line for golf courses, club manufactures and travel destinations. When people shoot lower scores they play more often and enjoy the game more. Golf needs this now, because it’s the fuel that will help our industry grow across the board.

Dropping the Golf Ball RULES REVISITED 31 Share
RULES REVISITED
Dropping the Golf Ball By Kelly Newland, PGA, MSGA Director of Rules & Competitions
O
I was given this EASY to remember lesson from Rules Official Bob Shogren while working for the Gateway PGA Section in St. Louis. If done in the above fashion and your ball is dropped in the correct area and comes to rest in the proper place you have proceeded correctly. You would be amazed at how many players have a difficult time taking a proper drop! Golf is a hard enough game without giving yourself extra penalty strokes for not following procedure properly. Don’t let this common mistake raise your scores.
ne area of the Rules of Golf that many players have a difficult time with takes place when they are dropping their ball under a specific Rule. It appears to be a simple process but there are several ways we can do it the wrong way!
In addition, some other reminders when dropping a Ball are:
For some reason, many golfers have a tendency to the “throw” the ball in an underhand fashion or drop it from waist high. Other golfers you will see raise their arm as high as they can before they let the ball go. If a ball is dropped in any of the above ways, or by anyone but the player, and played, the player incurs a one-stroke penalty in either Match or Stroke Play.
3. When dropping in an area marked as a Drop Zone, you do not have to stand in the zone… but, the ball must first strike the ground within it. Also contrary to what many believe the ball doesn’t have to stay in the drop zone for it to be considered in play!
The simplest way to drop a ball under a Rule of Golf is: E - Erect Stance A - Arm’s Length S - Shoulder Height Y- You Drop
1. Spinning the ball is not permissible 2. You may stand in any direction
4. If your ball touches any person or the equipment of any player before or after it strikes a part of the course and before it comes to rest, the ball must be re-dropped without penalty. Rule 20-2 covers Dropping and Re-Dropping in your Rule Book. This can be a very involved Rule so don’t be afraid to refresh yourself and ask questions to an Official when playing competitively. In the meantime, remember dropping a ball is E-A-S-Y! March 2015 | MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE

MSGA Rules Seminar Mr. Jerry Duffy, Past President of the MSGA and a rules official on the USGA Senior Amateur Committee has developed a rules seminar for members of member clubs of the MSGA and past seminars have drawn great reviews from all attending the seminars. If your club would like to have Jerry present the seminar to your members, please call the MSGA office at 410653-5300 or better yet just email Jerry at jeduffy@thebancorp.com
Following is a quote from one of this year’s seminars: “We had Jerry Duffy in last night doing a two hour seminar on the Rules of Golf and I cannot begin to tell you how fantastic it was. My members were engaged and eager to give correct answers, unfortunately they weren’t always able to! Jerry presented the rules in such a way that made them seem consistent, fair, and simple, which we know is not always the case. I especially liked the fact that he empowered my members to not only adhere to the rules, but how it is their job to protect other players by making sure everyone in their group are playing by the rules. We all know that it can be difficult to bring up what may be a rules infraction, but he was able to make the group understand that it is not personal, but only fair that everyone is held to the same standard. A heartfelt Thank You goes out to the MSGA from myself and Green Hill Country Club for your efforts in continuing to support local clubs and enhancing our golfer’s experience on and off the course!” Thanks Michael Callender, PGA, Head Golf Professional

Five Off-the-Beaten Path Winter Golf Getaways By Glenn Gray, Buffalo Brand Invigoration Group
As the state of Maryland is exiting one of the coldest winters in recent memory, golfers are migrating south to keep their game sharp and beat the last of the Maryland snow. You can expect the usual suspects – Myrtle Beach, South Florida and the Gulf Coast – to be flooded with golfers from north of the Mason-Dixon Line, so finding the right spot just off the beaten path is paramount. Here are a handful of courses that are easy to overlook from those destinations you were probably already considering.

Mississippi
Tunica National Golf Course www.tunicanational.com The Magnolia state might not have the flash of Las Vegas, but what one of country’s top golf and gaming hotbeds does offer is reasonable pricing, a variance of geography and good ol’ southern hospitality. The Gulf Coast rightfully receives much of the attention; with casino course amenities like Fallen Oak, The Preserve and Grand Bear, but elsewhere around the state you’ll find other fine options. Just outside Memphis, in the northern part of Mississippi, rests Tunica National. The 18-hole Mark McCumber design boasts generous landing areas and six tee box markers, but provides a nice challenge as Mississippi delta winds push through. Make it around the water hazards and you’ll be rewarded with perfect Champion Bermuda grass greens to putt on. Then head to one of Tunica’s nine casinos for some dinner, drinks and entertainment.

Amelia Island, Florida
Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort www.omnihotels.com/hotels/amelia-island-plantation
Nestled just off the Northeast corner of Florida is Amelia Island. This barrier island is akin to one you’d find in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, with golfing and luxury accommodations that rival any other locale in the country. In case you had any doubt this quiet plot of land was anything but the perfect winter retreat, those inclinations will be quickly dismissed when you walk into the lobby of the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort and are greeted by a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean. The resort, which hosted Golf Channel’s popular “Big Break Florida” earlier this year, is home to three outstanding golf courses. Oak Marsh, a Pete Dye classic, was completed shortly after construction of Harbour Town and follows a similar serpentine path around the region’s marshes and Spanish mossdraped oak trees. The Ocean Links Course provides five holes that offer oceanfront views similar to what you witnessed in the lobby – but on an even more personal level. Rounding out the golf experience is award-winning Long Point. Tom Fazio’s 1987 design is primarily reserved for members only, but guests may reserve tee times in advance. Trust us, you’ll want to book all three.

PGA National Resort
The Fazio, The Estate, The Palmer and The Squire www.premiergolf.com/pga-national
The Champion Course may be the pièce de résistance at PGA National Resort, but people are quick to forget about the property’s four other exhilarating designs. The entire property recently underwent renovations across the board, from the hotel lobby out to the greens, and the new Fazio course (formerly called The Haig) was the beneficiary of much of the work. It’s been modernized into a more player-friendly, strategic arrangement but keeps the classic accents inspired by five-time champ Walter Hagen. Luxury golf travel agency Premier Golf, who also partners with the PGA of America for Ryder Cup packages, is the preferred partner of the resort and the go-to for golfers in the know. Their experts will draft your itinerary and take the weight of making arrangements off your shoulders. Oh, and if you do decide to take on the Champions Course and its legendary Bear Trap, they can arrange that too.

Hilton Head, SC
Port Royal Golf Club, Oyster Reef www.hiltonheadgolfisland.com
Hilton Head Island is home to iconic, multi-course resorts like Sea Pines, Palmetto Hall and Palmetto Dunes. A number of other challenging and enjoyable options are also available, not far off the beaten cart path. The north end is home to Port Royal Golf Club and three distinct championship courses. The Barony Course, routed by George Cobb in 1963, demands strong iron play into secluded, well-bunkered greens. Pete Dye remodeled Cobb’s original Robber’s Row in 1994, and the layout traverses every pocket of nature of the north-central territory. Planter’s Row, a 1984 Willard Byrd design, is deftly routed through tight quarters using narrow, parallel fairways and small greens. Overall, the holes are more isolated than any on the island. Another great choice is Oyster Reef, designed by Rees Jones in 1982. This venerable track plunges through the cover of ancient forest before exploding onto the banks of Port Royal Sound at one of Hilton Head’s most memorable holes, the par-3 6th.

Kauai, Hawaii
Poipu Bay Golf Course and Princeville Makai Golf Club www.gohawaii.com/kauai/experiences/golf While Maui and The Big Island receive most tourists’ attention, the northernmostisle of Kauai offers a golfer’s paradise. The lush green setting is one of the few places in the world where you can tee off with a volcano on the horizon and waves crashing 150-feet below you. Without leaving the shore you can then kick off your golf shoes and dip your toes in the sand for some fun in the sun. Kauai is home to some of the country’s best resort courses; so many that it’s impossible to pick one. Poipu Bay Golf Course and its dramatic topography famously hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006. Its finishing holes might be one of the most beautiful seaside stretches on Earth. It might share that honor with nearby Princeville Makai Golf Club – amenity of the immaculate St. Regis Princeville Resort. Makai has made a popular attraction of renting golf carts out at sunset for guests to enjoy the sights. Given the lake and oceanfront Robert Trent Jones Sr. design, you can’t blame folks for coming back to the course.

n 2006, the MSGA started its Patron Member Program, as a way to reach more amateur golfers and provide opportunities to play many different Maryland golf courses. In the first year, over 60 Maryland courses offered privileges for the program-- it was an immediate success, with over 1,000 players joining the program in the first year! The proceeds from the program were designated to support junior golf and scholarships. Since then, the program has evolved and partnerships were formed. Initially it was the Middle Atlantic PGA that endorsed the program. Then the Maryland Golf Course Owners Association got on board. Over the years, the MSGA sought to add value by partnering with neighboring organizations, which brought partnerships with the Delaware State Golf Association, the Pennsylvania Golf Course Owners Association and the Ohio Golf Course Owners Association. Then for 2013, the MSGA announced its newest partnership, with the Victory Golf Pass. The Victory Golf Pass was created by PGA Professional Andy Barbin, owner of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Northeast Maryland. Barbin has actually started his program in the same year as the MSGA program, and by 2012, he had recruited over 300 participating courses in MD, VA, DC, DE, PA and NJ. Barbin’s program also supported a charitable cause for Crohn’s Disease. As a golf course owner and PGA professional, Barbin understood that programs like these have the potential to grow incremental revenue for clubs, as well as introduce new players. “We know our members love the program, but as a PGA member, I know the program must work for the clubs too,” said Barbin. MSGA Patron Member Program MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE | March 2015
Coordinator David Norman agrees, “We have enjoyed working with Andy, and our focus is growing the game. That means more rounds for Maryland clubs and a better golfing experience for Maryland golfers.” Traditionally Patron Member clubs have offered MSGA Patron Members an opportunity to play their course for a special rate, often $25 or less. Offers vary by day of week, time of day, etc., and some clubs offer multiple specials. Barbin’s suggestions for participating clubs this year will bring some new features.
• Off-season promotions – golf is a year round sport! • Special added-value discounts for seniors – they are loyal and have time for golf – also Military (Hero) discounts • Good pricing – make it attractive and strive for incremental rounds • Special promotions for junior build business now and for the future
Barbin and Norman have teamed up to recruit the clubs and keep excellent value for golfers, while bringing business to the clubs. The new lineup of courses will be announced soon, in time for ordering the perfect holiday gift for that special golfer in your family. Please track the program in Maryland State Golf magazine and on the MSGA website, www.msga.org. Thanks go to the clubs that support the program and make it a big winner for junior golf and charity!

The following article was compiled and written by Randal P. Reed, MSGA Director of Rules & Competitions and describes the circumstances surrounding the founding of the MSGA.

THE FIRST FOURTEEN CLUBS The Maryland State Golf Association was founded during a meeting at the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore on March 8, 1921. The founding clubs, which were said to represent 8,000 state golfers, were as follows: • Baltimore Country Club • Hagerstown Country Club • Maryland Country Club • Cumberland Country Club • Rolling Road Golf Club • Tome Golf Club • Green Spring Valley Hunt Club • Sherwood Forest Golf Club • Suburban Club • Naval Academy Golf Club • Elkridge Hunt Club • Talbot Country Club • Public Parks Golf Association • Monterey Country Club
MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE | March 2015
The Public Parks Golf Association was comprised of golfers at Clifton Park in Baltimore City. This Association had been organized during meetings in January, 1921 with William F. rst president. Located near Antietam Creek and in the general area of the current Hagerstown Municipal Golf Course, the nine-hole Hagerstown Country Club operated from 1908 – 1928, closing about four years after the opening of Fountain Head Country Club on the other side of town. Tome Golf Club was a prep school golf club in Port Deposit. The school overlooked the Susquehanna River and later moved to Northeast. Maryland Country Club, founded in the early 1900s near the Suburban Club, eventually met its demise during the Great Depression. The Washington Area clubs – Chevy Chase, Columbia, Bannockburn and Kirkside – declined to join the association because of their involvement with the Middle Atlantic Golf Association and District of Columbia Golf Association and also due to impending obligations to assist with the national open championship at Columbia Country Club.

CAPITAL EXPANSION As an aside, nine Washington Area clubs did join the MSGA in the early 1930s: Chevy Chase, Columbia, Burning Tree, Bannockburn, Indian Spring, Manor, Beaver Dam, Congressional and Kenwood. Bannockburn, originally located near Chevy Chase Circle (Connecticut Avenue and East-West Highway) moved to the Glen Echo area around 1910 and then was sold for residential development in 1946. Kirkside continued as the successor club to Bannockburn at the Chevy Chase Circle location. Indian Spring, which would later move to Layhill Road north of Georgia Avenue, was then located near the Four Corners area of Colesville Road and New Hampshire Avenue. Indian Spring closed in December, 2005. Beaver Dam in Landover later became Prince Georges Country Club and then, shortly after a move to Mitchellville in the early 1980s, was renamed the Country Club at Woodmore. Monterey Country Club, less than one mile from the Mason-Dixon Line in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, is a particularly interest case of a founding member club. Monterey had one of the oldest golf courses in the country. Located approximately eight miles from Camp David and built prior to 1885, the club featured a wide range of recreational and dining facilities that were popular among Washington area visitors. In addition to golf, the sports of tennis and swimming were featured. Over the years, visitors included Presidents Wilson, Coolidge and Eisenhower. The eventual Duchess of Windsor, Wallace rst green in Square Cottage. After the Battle of Gettysburg, the Army of Northern Virginia retreated through a swampy area that eventually became the site of Monterey Country Club.
OUR EARLY LEADERS cers of the Maryland State Golf Association were M. Tyson Ellicott, Baltimore Country Club, president; rst vice-president; R. Marsden Smith, Rolling Road Golf Club, second vicepresident; and Claude C. Madison, secretary-treasurer. Lieutenant F.L. Janeway of the Naval Academy Golf Club fth member of the Executive Committee. Originally, the 1921 Amateur Championship was scheduled for Rolling Road Golf Club and the Open Championship
at Baltimore Country Club. Later the Open was moved to Rolling Road and the Women’s Championship was rst there was discussion of a Baltimore City Championship to be conducted by the new state golf association. However, this initiative was soon undertaken by the Public Parks Golf Association at Clifton Park.
ORIGIN OF THE STATE GOLF ASSOCIATION Based on Baltimore Sun reporting by Claude C. Madison, among the spurs to the formation of the Maryland State Golf Association was the exhibition match between Harry Vardon, Ted Ray and B. Warren Corkran at Baltimore Country Club during the summer of 1920. The year of 1920 marked Vardon’s last trip to the United States while Ray captured his sole U.S. Open Championship at the Inverness Club in August, 1920, where he edged Vardon, Leo Diegel and Jock Hutchinson by one stroke, with the 50-year old Vardon going six over par in the last six holes. The temporary chairman of the Maryland players who called for a state golf association was R.E. Hanson. Hanson sent the invitations for the organization meeting that was held at the Emerson Hotel. In the March 9, 1921 Baltimore Sun, Claude Madison reported that “R.E. Hanson, who fostered and originated the idea of a State golf association, was lauded in a resolution unanimously adopted, which expressed appreciation of his orts to advance the game in Maryland. Hanson recently removed to New York.” Golf developments in Maryland even attracted the interest of Grantland Rice, the foremost sportswriter of the era. In ered the following remarks: “The movement to form a State golf association should be supported by every golfer in Maryland. Golf is now on the way to an even-greater boom and the golf courses and players of Maryland occupy too high a place to remain outside the fold. The fact that the national open championship is to be held at Columbia Country Club will bring additional attention to Maryland golf. There is no question that a State association can do a lot for the game, and at the same time the players get a lot of keen competition out of the organization.” Interestingly, there was spirited competition for the hosting rst championships. Representatives of Maryland Country Club, Rolling Road Golf Club and the Suburban Club were quite expressive in promoting their clubs. March 2015 | MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE

Baltimore Country Club is widely recognized as one of the top 50 country clubs in the nation R. Marsden Smith, green committee chairman at Rolling Road Golf Club weighed in: “We think we can show the golfers of the State something unique in golf construction. Our course is adequate in every respect for entertaining the championship. The only possible objection would be the misapprehension that we might not be ready due to improvements in the greens. By the middle of June when the tournament probably will be held, Rolling Road will be in tip-top condition.” Not to be outdone, A.E. Marshall, who chaired the Maryland Country Club golf committee, claimed that his club “is the logical course to entertain the championship. We have lengthened our course to championship distance. We are centrally located and we want the event.” The president of the Suburban Club, A.F. Weinberg, upped the stakes with the following pronouncement: “We have the greatest golf course in Maryland and, as this is to be a real championship contest, let’s play it on a real course.” (Claude Madison further noted Mr. Weinberg’s view that while the other two clubs have very decent courses, they “could not hold a candle to Suburban.”) MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE | March 2015
ered his club as a site for the 1925 Maryland Amateur. In the early 1920s Sherwood Forest was being developed by William F. Cochran as a private retreat on the Severn River. Cochran ered a sterling silver cup for a club team competition during the Maryland Amateur.
THE PRESENT Today, some 92 years later, the Maryland State Golf Association represents some 125 member clubs, and provides course rating and handicap services to 160 clubs and courses in Maryland. The MSGA is directed by a 15 member Board of Directors who represent various member of four . Our tournament schedule now consists of some 30 state tournaments as well as USGA ers.
