Five Questions with steve mona

PGA of America President
As the PGA of America celebrates a Centennial, what is the Association’s focus in commemorating a century as a leader in golf? Our Centennial celebration officially began Jan. 27 at the 63rd PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, where we launched “ThxPGAPro,” a year-long campaign to give a most deserved “thank you” to our PGA Professionals. The PGA Professional serves as the tangible connection between the game and all who play it. Our member professionals are the backbone of the game and their impact in the industry has grown exponentially as the game of golf expanded in this country and around the world. It has been a remarkable century of growing the game and it is tremendous to share our members and their many incredible stories of service. We urge all golfers to support their favorite PGA Professional at ThxPGAPro.com http://thxpgapro. com or on their social channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) using #thxpgapro (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23thxpgapro&src=typd).
1. 2. What have been some of the activities associated with the PGA Centennial? Golf Channel http://www.golfchannel.com/ teamed with us to present 41 days of profiling our nationwide PGA Sections during a 100-day Centennial celebration from Jan. 27 through May 4, which is PGA Instruction Day. Our Association began with seven Sections, and today there are 41 compelling stories that showcase PGA Professionals as coaches, mentors, a trusted friend and an inspiration. On May 4, the Centennial 100-day celebration culminates with six sites across the country featuring PGA Professionals hosting clinics and televised by Golf Channel.

3. When you think back upon the PGA’s century in golf, what are some of the impact moments in Association history? From the beginning, our Association united behind then-78 members elected on April 10, 1916, while our country was facing both major social and political issues. One year after our founding, the United States entered World War I. The Association supported our military and held together during war time by making key financial decisions that steadily attracted members, encouraged participation in golf and worked to find employment for our members. We began the PGA Championship in October 1916 and hosted the first Ryder Cup in 1927, two jewels of the PGA that remain strong through the years. Fast forward to 2015, the inaugural KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is a landmark event in PGA history as we teamed for the first time with the LPGA and KPMG to enhance this major championship and also host a women’s golf summit to showcase the positive effects the game has on the careers and lives of women executives.
4. What do you envision the century ahead has in store for golf and the PGA of America? We live in exciting, changing times where the discriminating customer seeks even more value out of the game. Golf has been challenged before and it has always met the challenges because of the incredible people within the industry. Our campaign is to promote that value and the opportunities golf offers socially while attracting more young people to golf. One of our most visible growth indicators is PGA Junior League Golf, which celebrated its fifth season in 2015. This program serves as a major contributor to helping increase junior participation by 800,000 over the past five years. We’re very proud that some of the game’s greatest stars are tremendous role models: Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Lexi Thompson, Rory McIlroy and Michelle Wie. While PGA Junior League keeps growing, so does the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship. PGA Professionals and Sections are scheduled to host 300-plus qualifiers over the next year, as juniors step up to earn a berth in the national finals at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament.
5.
If the PGA Founders were alive today, what might be their assessment of the PGA’s Centennial? I believe that our Founders would marvel at how far the PGA of America has come in elevating the golf profession. The PGA offers a world-class education program to prepare our members for an extremely competitive business environment. We are an Association that has built strong alliances; work daily to serve our members, attract new audiences, and reach out to local communities to support charitable endeavors. Above all, the PGA Professional is a trusted member of a community, a friend and a positive role model for the next generation of players.

RULES REVISITED
Knowing the Definitions of the Rules of Golf By Kelly E. Newland, MSGA Director of Rules & Competitions
Earlier this winter and into the spring many of our rules officials and volunteers with the MSGA attend a USGA Rules of Golf workshop. These workshops typically last three full days and are followed by taking a 100 question test so that we can become certified in the Rules of Golf. One of the many things you become familiar with when taking these workshops are the definitions in the rules book. Most would argue that knowing and understanding the definitions to the Rules of Golf are the single most important aspect of becoming knowledgeable with this aspect of the game. Let’s take a look at a couple examples of how the definitions play such an important role. What is a stroke? A stroke is the forward movement of the club with the intention of striking at and moving the ball, but if a player checks his downswing voluntarily before the club head reaches the ball he has not made a stroke. Let’s think about how this might be important in everyday situations on the golf course. We have all seen the player who takes a practice swing from the fairway or the tee and accidently moves their ball in play. Now that we have an understanding of the definition of a stroke, we know that this player had no intent of striking at and moving his ball in play. A penalty would be assessed under Rule 18-2 for the player causing his ball to move and it must be replaced.

Knowing the Definitions of the Rules of Golf RULES REVISITED 19 Share
Loose Impediments are another interesting definition that can confuse players at times. Loose Impediments are natural objects including; • Stones, leaves, twigs, branches and the like; • Dung, and • Worms, insects and the like, and the casts and heaps made by them, Provided they are not: • Fixed or growing, • Solidly embedded, or • Adhering to the ball. The definition of Loose Impediments goes on to tell us that sand and loose soil are loose impediments on the putting green, but not elsewhere. Let’s stop right here in the definition and take a closer look. Rory McIlroy learned about loose impediments the hard way when playing in the 2012 Abu Dhabi Championship. McIlroy removed sand on the fringe on his line of play on the 9th hole, which resulted in a two-stroke penalty that ultimately cost him the Championship. McIlroy could have removed sand from the green in this situation but let’s remember what our definition has to say. Sand and loose soil are loose impediments on the putting green, but not elsewhere. McIlroy received a two stroke penalty under rule 13-2 and had to play his ball as it lied. What about an insect that lands on your ball? We know that an insect by definition is a loose impediment. If a player’s ball lies through the green, the player may remove the insect with his fingers or blow the insect off the ball. Loose Impediments in a hazard may not be moved when your ball lies in the same hazard. What can we do in this situation? The decisions are here to help us even with the most bizarre of situations. Decision 23-1/5 tells us that an insect on our ball is not considered to be adhering to the ball. In a hazard the player may not physically touch or remove the insect from the ball. However, the player may take action, such as waiving his hand, a club or towel, to encourage the insect to move. In any case, if the player causes the ball to move he would incur a one stroke penalty and be required to replace the ball. Take some time with the definitions and study them. They will serve you well and ultimately give you a much better understanding of the Rules of Golf. The next time a question arises on the golf course you may find the answer simply by knowing the definition in the first section of the book! Shoulder Season Shines in South Florida at PGA Golf Club, PGA National Resort and Spa
The spring is golf season in Maryland, but Mother Nature hasn’t entirely cooperated over the past few years. For golfers who don’t want to take any chances on getting in a few rounds in late March and April, PGA Golf Club is offering a wide array of packages featuring its three onsite golf courses (Dye, Ryder and Wanamaker), nearby St. Lucie Trail Golf Club and a variety of lodging options to suit any size group.
“Traveling golfers associate South Florida with winter getaways, but the spring is arguably the single best time to tee it up in the Sunshine State,” says Jimmy Terry, PGA General Manager, PGA Golf Club. “The courses are in superb condition, the weather is typically dry and sunny, and the overall value is hard to beat. Generally, fairways are less crowded, the pace of place brisk, and the days are longer.”
For players in search of a quick-hitter, two-night, tworound packages begin at $209 per golfer. Starting at $686 per golfer, “The Handicap Wrecker” includes five nights and five rounds (one on each course, plus an additional area course), for a more immersive experience. All told, there are nearly 20 different options available to book at www.pgavillagegolf.com. Accommodations are offered in partnership with a number of local area hotels, as well as the onsite, multibedroom “Perfect Drive Villas.”
Weather, conditions and value withstanding, there’s never been a better time to visit PGA Golf Club. Its 20,000-square-foot clubhouse was completely renovated with a modern golf shop, the AmericanBritish fusion Taplow Pub featuring a cozy, welcoming interior, and NINETEEN-SIXTEEN Bar & Grille, a members-only restaurant adjacent to the 18th Hole of the Wanamaker Course.

last year, heightening the playing experience by introducing new turf to fairways and bunker surrounds, and planting several ornamental species to reframe holes. It was recently rated one of the top-five courses in South Florida by The Golf Channel’s course rating website, Golf Advisor (http://www.golfadvisor.com/). Extended Stay: PGA National Resort and Spa For many golfers who have been bottled up all winter, the only thing better than one golf destination is two. Like PGA Golf Club, PGA National Resort and Spa is a golf lover’s dream. The legendary locale offers 90 holes of high-caliber golf on five courses including the famed Champion Course, home to the popular PGA TOUR Honda Classic and past host of the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship and several Senior PGA Championships. Through April 30, PGA National Resort & Spa’s (http:// www.pgaresort.com/) popular Gold Golf http://www.
pgaresort.com/golf-vacation-packages stay-and-play starts at $329 (per person, per night, double occupancy) and features a daily round on one of the resort’s layouts (surcharge for the Champion Course). Included are nightly deluxe accommodations, complimentary cart fees and club storage, access to PGA TOUR quality practice facilities with unlimited range balls, and full daily breakfast at the Palm Terrace. Getting There PGA Golf Club is conveniently located off Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. just 50 minutes north ofPalm Beach International Airport (PBI). PGA National Resort and Spa is only 15 minutes north of PBI. Known as the “easy in, easy out” airport, PBI offers nearly 100 non-stop flights to more than 25 cities in the U.S. and Canada. Both golf havens are about a two-hour drive from Orlando, Miami and other Florida population centers. september 2015 | MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE

pring 2016 Outerwear Collection. The Antigua Group, Inc. announced its Antigua Windshirts for 2016. The Spring ’16 direction for Antigua’s men’s fashion golfwear directly reflects current trends taking shape in fashion, from couture to ready-to-wear. “Antigua’s expanded its windshirt category for the 2016 collection,” says Sean Gregg, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing Support. “We’ve developed styles that appeal to various needs and demographics, alike. Interlock knits lined with a brushed tricot mesh knit are bonded together with a water-resistant membrane, for comfort and wind protection.”
Styles Element Vest takes the irregular heather knit pattern from self-collar polo style Element, and is the surface fabric making up the three-layer bonded vest. Contrasted simply by a solid inset at the top shoulder, this is a stylish and functional added layer of warmth. Coup is a refreshing update to the short-sleeve windshirt. Using multiple colors of fabric, zipper pocket and placket trim, the quarter-zip, short-sleeve pullover windshirt has been established as an every season wind wear staple. As the trend dictates that short sleeves no longer encroach on the wearer’s elbow, Coup accommodates the trend by allowing freer mobility. Paragon is a fresh addition to previous successes in Antigua’s windwear lineup. This virtual shell styling utilizes the multilayer fabric developed for Element Vest and Coup, and is interpreted as a raglan sleeved quarter-zip, color-blocked windshirt. Updated detailing comes in the form of color blocking, as the sleeves share the twisted neutral heathers seen throughout the collection and is offset by the primary colors that represent the garment’s body. The fabric’s stretch allows for comfortable movement while simultaneously insulating the golfer.

LEXI THOMPSON, JORDAN SPIETHTO PROMOTE DRIVE, CHIP AND PUTT MONDAY IN NEW YORK CITY Note: This article was written prior to the event.
AUGUSTA, Ga. –The United States Golf Association (USGA), Masters Tournament and the PGA of America announced that Jordan Spieth, reigning Masters and U.S. Open Champion, and Lexi Thompson, the topranked American on the LPGA Tour, will be in New York City together on Monday, March 14, to promote the upcoming Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals and registration for this summer’s local qualifying. This fun, free and nationwide youth golf development initiative invites boys and girls, ages 7-15, to participate in local qualifying opportunities set in all 50 states throughout the months of May, June, July and August. Boys and girls will enter to play across separate divisions in four age categories, with scoring centered around golf’s three fundamental skills (Drive, Chip and Putt). Top performers at the local level will advance through sub-regional and regional qualifiers in July/August and September, respectively. From these qualifiers, 80 finalists – 40 boys and 40 girls – will earn an invitation to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 2, the eve of the 2017 Masters Tournament. Spieth and Thompson will make several stops together throughout the day, including appearances on CBS This Morning, ESPN’s Sports Center and Golf Channel. The MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE | september 2015
Drive, Chip and Putt Championship will also be featured on the TODAY Show, “Mornings with Maria” on Fox Business, Live! with Kelly and Michael, Sprout’s “Sunny Side Up” and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Finally, Thompson will light the Empire State Building in the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship colors. Fans can follow Spieth and Thompson’s media visits on the official Drive, Chip and Putt Championship Twitter (@DriveChipPutt), Facebook, Instagram (@ drivechipandputt) and Snapchat (drivechipputt) channels. “I am a passionate supporter of junior golf programs and couldn’t be happier to work with Jordan to promote Drive, Chip and Putt next week in New York City,” said Thompson. “Initiatives like this would provide great ways for girls and boys to learn golf while having fun, and Drive, Chip and Putt is an opportunity for players of all skill levels to get started at a young age and build confidence. I hope that by getting the word out, more families and kids will be inspired to sign up for this year’s championship and get into the game.” “The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is an incredible opportunity for young players across the country,

and I am excited to team up with Lexi to spread the word about this amazing program,” said Spieth.“After attending the finals at Augusta National Golf Club and being involved with the event at the local level, I’ve seen firsthand the fun and excitement these kids experience, which is what the game is all about. Hopefully by sharing our support for Drive, Chip and Putt, Lexi and I can encourage more parents to sign up their kids and help junior golfers everywhere pursue their dreams.” In addition to supporting Drive, Chip and Putt, Thompson serves as an ambassador for PGA Junior League Golf and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. Last year, Spieth and The Jordan Spieth Family Foundation partnered with the Northern Texas PGA (NTPGA) Junior Golf Foundation to encourage participation in Drive, Chip and Putt qualifying opportunities in North Texas. Peer Review & Playing Alone Enhance Peer Review The concept of “peer review” is an essential element of the USGA Handicap System™. It allows other players to learn a player’s potential ability and to form a reasonable basis for supporting or disputing a score that has been posted. Without peer review, a Handicap Index® loses its inherent value, and is just a number.
Strengthen the Integrity and Credibility of the USGA Handicap System Players are not prohibited from playing alone, only from posting solo-round scores for handicap purposes. By playing alone, a player loses the advantage of someone alongside who can remind the player of a Rule or verify that they made a 5 and not a 6. Handicap controls, a series of checks and balances that have always been a part of the USGA Handicap System, ensure that a Handicap Index will accurately measure a player’s potential ability. They exist to assist the golf club and the Handicap Committee with its responsibilities. The amendment to clarify a round played alone as an unacceptable score is an important part of building greater confidence in a player’s Handicap Index.
Global Game Societal trends such as globalization and technology are making our world a smaller place. Golfers are traveling and competing with one another more today than ever. Therefore, this change will further enhance the credibility of the USGA Handicap System worldwide.
Frequently Asked Questions Why will scores made while playing alone no longer be eligible for posting? Primarily, to support a key tenet of the USGA Handicap System: peer review. Knowing golfers rely on the integrity of the system to produce an accurate view of playing ability, this change helps golfers form a better basis to support or dispute scores that have been posted to a player’s scoring record. The majority of handicapping authorities around the globe have employed this policy for some time. With them, the USGA believes it provides a more accurate view of a golfer’s ability, supporting integrity, fairness and equitable play among all golfers. What constitutes not playing alone? As long as someone accompanies the player during the round (e.g., fellow competitor, opponent, caddie, marker for a tournament, friend riding along in a cart) the player is not playing alone.
How many holes can a player play alone to post their score? The player must be accompanied for at least seven holes for a ninehole score or 13 holes for an 18-hole score. This is consistent with Section 5-1 and the minimum number of holes played under the Rules of Golf. For the holes played alone (unaccompanied), the player would treat these as not played under the Rules of Golf and post according to “par plus” any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive. (For more information, see Section 4-2). Note: If a player plays nearly all holes accompanied but just a few alone, the holes played alone are calculated using “par plus,” keeping in mind the maximum that can be played alone in a round eligible for posting is two holes for a nine-hole score and five holes for an 18-hole score. Some examples would be starting out alone and joining up with a player(s), or starting out accompanied and finishing the round alone.
Please visit USGA.org for more information on the USGA Handicap System.

PowerBilt has signed MMA athlete Cub Swanson to promote the DFX driver and all of its latest golf equipment. An avid golfer who grew up mostly in the Palm Springs area, the MMA pro Swanson is part of a new marketing campaign to position PowerBilt with an edgier personality. The forged titanium body comes with titanium cup face technology, as well as aerodynamic clubhead shaping. It’s available in both the high MOI and Tour Series, in lofts of 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5° and 12.5°. Standard shaft length is 45 ½”. Victory Golf Pass and the MSGA Partnership
I
n 2006, the MSGA started its Patron Member Program, as a way to reach more amateur golfers and provide opportunities to play many different Maryland golf courses. In the first year, over 60 Maryland courses offered privileges for the program-- it was an immediate success, with over 1,000 players joining the program in the first year! The proceeds from the program were designated to support junior golf and scholarships. Since then, the program has evolved and partnerships were formed. Initially it was the Middle Atlantic PGA that endorsed the program. Then the Maryland Golf Course Owners Association got on board. Over the years, the MSGA sought to add value by partnering with neighboring organizations, which brought partnerships with the Delaware State Golf Association, the Pennsylvania Golf Course Owners Association and the Ohio Golf Course Owners Association. Then for 2013, the MSGA announced its newest partnership, with the Victory Golf Pass. The Victory Golf Pass was created by PGA Professional Andy Barbin, owner of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Northeast Maryland. Barbin has actually started his program in the same year as the MSGA program, and by 2012, he had recruited over 300 participating courses in MD, VA, DC, DE, PA and NJ. Barbin’s program also supported a charitable cause for Crohn’s Disease. As a golf course owner and PGA professional, Barbin understood that programs like these have the potential to grow incremental revenue for clubs, as well as introduce new players. “We know our members love the program, but as a PGA member, I know the program must work for the clubs too,” said Barbin. MSGA Patron Member Program MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE | september 2015
Coordinator David Norman agrees, “We have enjoyed working with Andy, and our focus is growing the game. That means more rounds for Maryland clubs and a better golfing experience for Maryland golfers.” Traditionally Patron Member clubs have offered MSGA Patron Members an opportunity to play their course for a special rate, often $25 or less. Offers vary by day of week, time of day, etc., and some clubs offer multiple specials. Barbin’s suggestions for participating clubs this year will bring some new features.
• Off-season promotions – golf is a year round sport! • Special added-value discounts for seniors – they are loyal and have time for golf – also Military (Hero) discounts • Good pricing – make it attractive and strive for incremental rounds • Special promotions for junior build business now and for the future

THE FIRST FOURTEEN CLUBS The Maryland State Golf Association was founded during a meeting at the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore on March 8, 1921. The founding clubs, which were said to represent 8,000 state golfers, were as follows: • Baltimore Country Club • Hagerstown Country Club • Maryland Country Club • Cumberland Country Club • Rolling Road Golf Club • Tome Golf Club • Green Spring Valley Hunt Club • Sherwood Forest Golf Club • Suburban Club • Naval Academy Golf Club • Elkridge Hunt Club • Talbot Country Club • Public Parks Golf Association • Monterey Country Club

The Public Parks Golf Association was comprised of golfers at Clifton Park in Baltimore City. This Association had been organized during meetings in January, 1921 with William F. rst president. Located near Antietam Creek and in the general area of the current Hagerstown Municipal Golf Course, the nine-hole Hagerstown Country Club operated from 1908 – 1928, closing about four years after the opening of Fountain Head Country Club on the other side of town. Tome Golf Club was a prep school golf club in Port Deposit. The school overlooked the Susquehanna River and later moved to Northeast. Maryland Country Club, founded in the early 1900s near the Suburban Club, eventually met its demise during the Great Depression. The Washington Area clubs – Chevy Chase, Columbia, Bannockburn and Kirkside – declined to join the association because of their involvement with the Middle Atlantic Golf Association and District of Columbia Golf Association and also due to impending obligations to assist with the national open championship at Columbia Country Club.

CAPITAL EXPANSION As an aside, nine Washington Area clubs did join the MSGA in the early 1930s: Chevy Chase, Columbia, Burning Tree, Bannockburn, Indian Spring, Manor, Beaver Dam, Congressional and Kenwood. Bannockburn, originally located near Chevy Chase Circle (Connecticut Avenue and East-West Highway) moved to the Glen Echo area around 1910 and then was sold for residential development in 1946. Kirkside continued as the successor club to Bannockburn at the Chevy Chase Circle location. Indian Spring, which would later move to Layhill Road north of Georgia Avenue, was then located near the Four Corners area of Colesville Road and New Hampshire Avenue. Indian Spring closed in December, 2005. Beaver Dam in Landover later became Prince Georges Country Club and then, shortly after a move to Mitchellville in the early 1980s, was renamed the Country Club at Woodmore. Monterey Country Club, less than one mile from the Mason-Dixon Line in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, is a particularly interest case of a founding member club. Monterey had one of the oldest golf courses in the country. Located approximately eight miles from Camp David and built prior to 1885, the club featured a wide range of recreational and dining facilities that were popular among Washington area visitors. In addition to golf, the sports of tennis and swimming were featured. Over the years, visitors included Presidents Wilson, Coolidge and Eisenhower. The eventual Duchess of Windsor, Wallace rst green in Square Cottage. After the Battle of Gettysburg, the Army of Northern Virginia retreated through a swampy area that eventually became the site of Monterey Country Club.
OUR EARLY LEADERS cers of the Maryland State Golf Association were M. Tyson Ellicott, Baltimore Country Club, president; rst vice-president; R. Marsden Smith, Rolling Road Golf Club, second vicepresident; and Claude C. Madison, secretary-treasurer. Lieutenant F.L. Janeway of the Naval Academy Golf Club fth member of the Executive Committee. Originally, the 1921 Amateur Championship was scheduled for Rolling Road Golf Club and the Open Championship
at Baltimore Country Club. Later the Open was moved to Rolling Road and the Women’s Championship was rst there was discussion of a Baltimore City Championship to be conducted by the new state golf association. However, this initiative was soon undertaken by the Public Parks Golf Association at Clifton Park.
ORIGIN OF THE STATE GOLF ASSOCIATION Based on Baltimore Sun reporting by Claude C. Madison, among the spurs to the formation of the Maryland State Golf Association was the exhibition match between Harry Vardon, Ted Ray and B. Warren Corkran at Baltimore Country Club during the summer of 1920. The year of 1920 marked Vardon’s last trip to the United States while Ray captured his sole U.S. Open Championship at the Inverness Club in August, 1920, where he edged Vardon, Leo Diegel and Jock Hutchinson by one stroke, with the 50-year old Vardon going six over par in the last six holes. The temporary chairman of the Maryland players who called for a state golf association was R.E. Hanson. Hanson sent the invitations for the organization meeting that was held at the Emerson Hotel. In the March 9, 1921 Baltimore Sun, Claude Madison reported that “R.E. Hanson, who fostered and originated the idea of a State golf association, was lauded in a resolution unanimously adopted, which expressed appreciation of his orts to advance the game in Maryland. Hanson recently removed to New York.” Golf developments in Maryland even attracted the interest of Grantland Rice, the foremost sportswriter of the era. In ered the following remarks: “The movement to form a State golf association should be supported by every golfer in Maryland. Golf is now on the way to an even-greater boom and the golf courses and players of Maryland occupy too high a place to remain outside the fold. The fact that the national open championship is to be held at Columbia Country Club will bring additional attention to Maryland golf. There is no question that a State association can do a lot for the game, and at the same time the players get a lot of keen competition out of the organization.” Interestingly, there was spirited competition for the hosting rst championships. Representatives of Maryland Country Club, Rolling Road Golf Club and the Suburban Club were quite expressive in promoting their clubs. september 2015 | MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE

Baltimore Country Club is widely recognized as one of the top 50 country clubs in the nation R. Marsden Smith, green committee chairman at Rolling Road Golf Club weighed in: “We think we can show the golfers of the State something unique in golf construction. Our course is adequate in every respect for entertaining the championship. The only possible objection would be the misapprehension that we might not be ready due to improvements in the greens. By the middle of June when the tournament probably will be held, Rolling Road will be in tip-top condition.” Not to be outdone, A.E. Marshall, who chaired the Maryland Country Club golf committee, claimed that his club “is the logical course to entertain the championship. We have lengthened our course to championship distance. We are centrally located and we want the event.” The president of the Suburban Club, A.F. Weinberg, upped the stakes with the following pronouncement: “We have the greatest golf course in Maryland and, as this is to be a real championship contest, let’s play it on a real course.” (Claude Madison further noted Mr. Weinberg’s view that while the other two clubs have very decent courses, they “could not hold a candle to Suburban.”) MARYLAND STATE GOLF MAGAZINE | september 2015
ered his club as a site for the 1925 Maryland Amateur. In the early 1920s Sherwood Forest was being developed by William F. Cochran as a private retreat on the Severn River. Cochran ered a sterling silver cup for a club team competition during the Maryland Amateur.
