FALLS OVERLOOK CAFE Enjoy dining with a view! Falls Overlook Cafe is located in Falls Park in the old Sioux Falls Light and Power Company hydroelectric plant, which was completed in 1908 and housed three 500-kilowatt generators. See page 63 for more details.
EXPERIENCE Falls Park! The Falls of the Big Sioux River have been a focus of life in the region throughout history. Native Americans were the first to visit the Falls and bring stories of them to European explorers. Since then Falls Park has been the center of recreation and industry from the founding of the city in 1856.
FALLS PARK OPEN AIR SHELTER The Falls Park Open Air Shelter is home to the Falls Park Farmer’s Market and is available for large picnics, special events and more. The Shelter is 200’ long by 42’ wide with a 30’ wide concrete walk. Electrical service is provided to each column and water service is available at both ends. An accessible restroom and playground are adjacent to the shelter.
BIKING & HIKING TRAILS The bike trail in Falls Park connects to over 29 miles of the Big Sioux River Recreation Trail and Greenway as it follows the Big Sioux River and loops around the city. The existing trail system provides access to scenic areas along the river and provides recreational opportunities for many parts of the city.
Located at 900 N. Phillips Ave., visitors can see the city’s namesake falls, as well as some of the first buildings built in Sioux Falls. Today Falls Park covers 123 acres. An average of 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the Falls each second. If you’d like additional information about Sioux Falls, contact the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau at 605-275-6060 or VisitSiouxFalls.com.
NOTE: Buses and campers traveling to Falls Park via Phillips Avenue please be advised of a 12-ft. train trussel before entering the park. Alternate route: Weber Ave.
Falls Park Visitor Information Center 605-367-7430 Free parking throughout the park!
HORSE BARN The building was built in the late 1800s as a horse barn, perhaps to house horses that must have worked any of the eleven stone quarries in existence at that time. Possibly it was part of a local creamery. No records exist to tell us, but the building is charming, none-the-less.

The mill burned in 1956, destroying the wooden roof and interior walls. It was constructed of Sioux Quartzite quarried on site. Home to Sounds at the Falls and more—see Calendar of Events.
MILLRACE & DAM Originally constructed to provide power for the Queen Bee Mill in the 1880s, the dam was raised in 1908 to supply power to the hydroelectric plant. Arrowhead Park • east of F-10
1600 S. Riverbluff Rd. (Two miles east of Sioux Falls on Hwy. 42, with entrance off 26th St.) The park is named after a large arrowhead shaped granite quarry which is one of three historic quarries that are now lakes. The area is now a bird sanctuary—a haven for bird watching. Stones from these quarries were used to build several buildings in downtown Sioux Falls including the Old Courthouse Museum. The City’s Parks Department has planted native prairie grass and developed a network of hiking trails on the land, which was donated by Dale and Dorothy Weir. Be sure to see the restored 1888 barn, which some claim was designed by famous architect Wallace Dow.

Good Earth State Park southeast of Sioux Falls is an important cultural and historical site as well as a unique nature retreat. The site itself is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the United States. The river, abundant wildlife, fertile flood plains, availability of pipestone (catlinite) and protection from winds made the area an important gathering place for seasonal ceremonies and a significant trading center for many tribal peoples from 1300 - 1700 A.D. In 2013, Good Earth State Park was designated South Dakota’s 13th state park. It presently has approximately 6 miles of developed trails that wind back and forth between sunny grasslands and deeply-shaded forest ravines. Experience the beauty and history of Good Earth State Park via scenic vistas and hiking trails. Guided nature hikes are offered with registration through the Outdoor Campus at www.outdoorcampus.org.
