ll too often, this city is defined by the intrigues of the nation’s decision makers as they go about the business of governing. It goes without saying that Canberra was created to facilitate Federal Government and to accommodate the museums and monuments that define the nation, and this is the image that most Australians have of their capital. While it is true that this city has been planned to be the mantle piece of the nation, it is refreshing to discover unique precincts that have developed spontaneously to offer diverse experiences. There are great places to eat—from the best in fine dining to quick and inexpensive bites—and many places to have a drink and unwind. Or if you are in need of a little retail therapy check out the unique local businesses that offer everything from great fashion and jewellery to gifts and home ware. Treat this book as your personal guide and you will soon be navigating this city like a local. Alex Tricolas, Editor.

Dieci e Mezzo LOCATED IN THE SLEEK GROUND FLOOR OF ACTEWAGL’S BRAND NEW BUNDA STREET BUILDING, THIS SMART AND STYLISH RESTAURANT HAS PLACED FINE DINING SQUARELY IN CANBERRA’S CBD

C

hef James Kidman, well known to Sydney-siders as the maestro behind Otto Ristorante, has now well and truly settled into Canberra and teamed up with Fiona Wright, bringing with him his sophisticated and contemporary take on Italian cuisine at Dieci E Mezzo. Whilst the foyer of an office building may not initially come to mind as a location for a restaurant with such high expectations, once inside it all works beautifully. The space is light, open and airy, yet surprisingly intimate, with a minimalist theme that highlights the quality

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

of the fit-out. Polished terrazzo floors, white marble bar and designer light fittings all add to the sense of inner city style here. From the kitchen, Kidman embraces the philosophy of quality ingredient and distinct, separate flavours that show Italy’s cuisine at its best. Appetisers are perfect teasers that may be saltcod with olives and sourdough; or oysters shucked to order with chardonnay vinegar and eschallot. A delicate entree of lightly pickled red whiting and air dried tuna with lambs lettuce and tomato is beautifully presented and typical of simple flavours

complementing each other. For pasta, classic yet rarely utilised bottarga adds a perfect savoury lift to a spaghettini with prawns, lemon and basil. For mains, a duck neck sausage is filled with pork and duck, and accompanied by fennel cream, baby leek and citrus oil; and a roasted rack and rump of lamb for two is perfect to share. Desser t may be a simple affogato or a peach tar t with yoghur t, vanilla and verjuice sorbet; and the extensive wine list features some very special labels, carefully selected from the great regions of Italy and Australia.

A place where an intimate knowledge of, and passion for wines – and their relationship to food – has been a constant.

Benchmark Wine Bar Benchmark opened its doors in 2003 proclaiming its intention to offer Canberra’s wine buffs the most interesting wine list in the city

W

ith a selection of 500 old-world and new-world wines–100 of those available by the glass–it cer tainly seems to have achieved its goal, and as many Canberra establishments take a more and more sophisticated approach to wine, Benchmark remains a place where an intimate knowledge of, and passion for wines – and their relationship to food – has been a constant. The seasonally updated menu has always subscribed to the Modern European school here, but recently, star ters have taken the odd successful sojourn into

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

Asian territor y. Whilst angel hair pasta with black truffle salsa and parmigiano reggiano, or iberico jamon with shaved manchego cheese and cornichons are typical of what regular diners here may expect, more surprising are lightly crumbed cuttlefish with black pepper lemongrass and lime, or marinated octopus with a vietnamese style salad. No such fusion reigns in the shor t but solid list of mains. Expect confit duck leg with toulouse sausage and braised fennel, lamb rack with seasonal ratatouille and rosemar y jus, or a 500 gram t-bone with sweet potato chips and seeded

mustard sauce. Desser ts may be a simple selection of truffles, a trio of house-made sorbet or a tahitian vanilla crème brulée, but this is a wine bar after all, and one gets the impression that desser ts make way for an imressive cheese selection that spans Australia, France, Italy and Spain. For those wishing to sample a range of dishes, a degustation is offered with or without wines, and owner Tasso Rovolis is always on hand to assist in the selection of the perfect drop to match diners’ meals and share some of his extensive knowledge.

T

his smar t and sophisticated bistro is located in the popular dining precinct at New Acton, directly behind the Diamant hotel. Large white carrara marble tables, which run the length of the dining room, share the space with more intimate settings for four or less. White marble blends easily with dark hardwood floors and ornate cornices on the high ceilings, and ar twork that ranges from the conventional to the avant garde adorns the walls. space, inviting mouths to water. Diners may choose to sit inside or in one of two outdoor spaces that dominate the beautifully restored exterior of this lovely old building. Chef and owner Grant Kells impresses with his French and British bistro menu that may feature a twice baked goat’s cheese soufflé with pea and mint veloute; or a star ter of pig’s trotter and sweetbread carpaccio with celeriac remoulade, typical of what Grant cheekily calls “nose to tail” cooking, referring to this restaurants great understanding of offal. For mains, expect a duo of rabbit with heirloom

carrots and a rabbit liver canapé; or from the woodfired grill, a prime Angus sirloin with bordolaise sauce and confit shallots. Sweets may include house compressed watermelon with honey yoghur t panna cotta, watermelon sorbet and rose water Turkish delight; or a tar tlet with raspberry jam tuille and vanilla sour cream ice cream. A serious wine list covers France and Germany alongside most regions in Australia, including some good locals, and diners can enjoy a pleasant Sunday listening to Jazz in the lovely surrounds of this iconic Canberra building.

selection of tapas dishes complemented by a distinguished selection of wines, in a beautiful old world setting.

Parlour Wine Room Victorian style decor, Spanish tapas and a boutique approach to wine and dining are all on offer at Parlour Wine Room

T

apas style dining, a relaxed and taste filled experience, has certainly taken the city by storm in recent years, and has become an interesting alternative to the standard customary dining fare. Parlour Wine Room, in the beautifully restored NewActon Pavilion – directly behind the funky Diamant Hotel – has embraced the philosophy with gusto and delivers a refined and sophisticated selection of tapas dishes complemented by a distinguished selection of wines, in a beautiful old world setting. Expect to find atun claro, seared spiced tuna with aubergine caviar, boquerón’s aioli

and petitas; remolachas asadas, slow braised beetroot with Spanish onion, orange and a sherry vinaigrette. Also available are Spanish small goods such as jamon, salamanca and salchichon. Dishes may be ordered individually or as part of a Chef ’s Table, enabling the guest to enjoy the various flavours from the menu. A serious approach to wine is demonstrated by Parlour’s wine list; with a comprehensive selection of Spanish, German and French wines, along with Australia’s finest from Canberra region and interstate winemakers. The same can be said for the attention to detail evident

in the unique selection of cocktails, top shelf liqueurs and boutique beers; where wine may not satisfy the taste, their cocktails, liqueurs and selection of beers will. The large terrace area gives diners the option of outdoor dining with relaxed lounges, large umbrella coverings and background music to suit the mood. The decor indicates that the heritage spirit has been taken to heart here. Victorian era lounges, interesting early 20th century posters, intricate cornices and original polished hardwood floors adding to the old world feel in this smart establishment.

T

he space in this new modern Italian eater y is bright and air y with a Fellini movie vibe: old plumbing acts as light fittings, umbrellas with bike prints as light shades; render is left intentionally unpainted, and tiles seem mismatched, all adding to a cer tain urban grit. Food appears on the menus in Italian, with an English translation. Star ters may be an antipasto of olive ascolana, deep fried green olives stuffed with pork sausage and parmesan; or a more than impressive

gamberoni, three seriously oversized grilled prawns wrapped in pancetta and a pesto sauce. Pastas are home-made and authentic: a tagliatelle comes with duck ragu, and ravioli is served with gorgonzola sauce and stuffed with porcini mushrooms and ricotta. Mains are limited to one beef and one fish dish, yet both are executed with the same sophisticated simplicity. A sirloin comes with a balsamic reduction and roast potatoes, and a snapper fillet is perfect with olives, capers, anchovies

and cherry tomatoes. Pizzas on the other hand, are many and varied, and are segregated, being either tomato based or bianche. Expect traditional toppings such as potato, truffle oil, buffalo mozzarella, ar tichokes and spinach. The wine list is extensive, covers Italy and Australia, and is complemented by some excellent French champagnes. Outdoor seating is available in the lovely cour tyard of this heritage listed building, perfect on a sunny day or a warm night.

Seriously good seafood shares equal billing with an adventurous cocktail list and a solid wine list

Pelagic this quirky cavern of sub-aquatic delights is serving up amazing seafood and classy cocktails in the heart of the city

A

number of new restaurants have opened in the last year that have raised the bar in Canberra’s CBD, and Pelagic is firmly in the upper echelons. Mick Chatto’s latest venture, after moving on from the well respected Ar tespresso, is the kind of place where some seriously good seafood shares equal billing with an adventurous cocktail list and a solid and extensive wine list. Catering to Canberra’s latest obsession of sampling and sharing a range of smaller por tioned dishes, the tasting bar allows diners to sit and order

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

tapas-style dishes from an ever changing menu of the freshest seafood with a glass wine or a cocktail. The interior is moody and quirky – a sub-aquatic cavern of a space with polished concrete floors, cleverly placed lights, designer chairs and colourful, hanging fish sculptures adding to the atmosphere. From the kitchen, expect a star ter of blue swimmer crab lasagne with zucchini ribbons, tomato and shellfish oil; or seared scallops with pickled caulifower, pancetta, pink peppercorns and basil oil. For mains, a barramundi fillet is roasted and

ser ved with pancetta, caramelised garlic and salsa verde; and salmon is chargrilled and accompanied by braised fennel, toasted almonds, and an orange and eschallot vinaigrette. To finish, choose a cinnamon pannacotta with macerated strawberries; or an apricot and almond tar t. A great range of stickies – amongst others – feature in an extensive after-dinner list that includes some great cocktails, allowing diners to linger at the bar a little longer than usual and make an evening of it.

Gus’ Café is highly regarded for its mix of great coffee and

inner-city vibe

Gus' Café In 1968 the now legendary Gus Petersilka established Gus’ Café, pioneering Canberra’s modern café culture by defying the draconian regulations which prohibited outdoor dining

G

us’– Canberra's oldest outdoor café – has been highly regarded for its mix of great coffee and inner-city vibe for decades. Today this heritage listed café is managed by a vibrant young team – headed by siblings Stephen Rockmann and Janice Glenn – which has cer tainly taken the Gus' legacy to hear t over the course of the last decade and a half. This is reflected in the care they take to maintain all that is great about this spot in busy Bunda street. The recent

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

indoor refurbishment has re-interpreted elements of the original fit-out, whilst giving a modern feel, and the two sprawling outdoor areas continue to dominate this corner of the city. The menu offers a substantial selection of good café style fare all day long. Breakfast may be pancakes with mixed berry compote, mascarpone & maple syrup; or an egg white omelette with smoked salmon, mushrooms and roquette leaves. A toasted rye bread sandwich of leg ham with tasty cheese, fresh

tomato salsa, mixed lettuce & seeded mustard aioli is typical of the light eats that have made this place an institution. That said, a range of main dishes – such as steamed fish fillets with mussels, chilli, coconut, lime sauce and sweet potato rounds; or a forest mushroom risotto with cherry tomatoes – cater to those diners looking for a more substantial dinner, And for those after something sweet, don't go past their house-made banana bread with strawberries, marscapone and maple syrup.

S

DĂŠcor is black on black with hints of gold giving an edgy sophistication to the cavernous space. Towering ceilings are adorned with space age light fittings that emit a golden glow. An amazing hand painted wall mural is mimicked by a hanging art installation, and giant concrete Y frames that make up the skeleton of the building stand unadorned in the centre of the room, adding an industrial

touch. Communal tables fill the centre of the space and luxurious Victorian lounges on the perimeter are perfect for after dinner. Food is simple rather than fussy and focuses on freshness and quality. Gourmet pizzas are expertly delivered from the wood fired oven and feature a classic selection along with some innovations. Light meals, often ordered to share, are cer tainly wor th a sample – sliders are a trio of mini burgers sitting artfully on brushed condiments, and salads may be house smoked trout baby with spinach, egg, potato, green beans & lemon dressing. Tapas platters

may include soft shell crab, trout tar tare, betel leaf with prawns, pot stickers, sliders or chilli salt & pepper squid. A more substantial meal may include a main dish of slow braised five spice beef shin with jasmine rice cake and brocollini; or a sirloin with teriyaki mushrooms and wasabi mash potato. A well stocked bar takes pride of place at the lounge end, pushing out high quality beers, wines and spirits, as well as cocktails for the fashionable after dinner crowd, which keeps this establishment buzzing til the early hours on weekends.

ethnic diner. Star ters may be tandoori glazed whole baby snapper with seeded fennel, dill, scallions, ginger, coriander and fresh chilli; or ling fillets marinated with a green paste of mint, coriander, chilli, fresh ginger, carawee seeds and yoghurt, steamed in banana leaves. Classic curries are refined and flavoursome, and are given a heat rating on the menu. Ever popular rogan josh has a rich gravy, and comes with fresh tomatoes and coriander ; and Sagwala is made with lamb, beef or chicken, and cooked with a spinach puree and cream. Seafood is represented by wok tossed prawns marinated

in ginger and garlic; or a hot and spicy fish curry from southern India finished in tamarind sauce. A range of weekly specials, most of which are unique to Blu Ginger and rarely seen outside India, may include steamed chicken mince and rice balls with sweet chilli. Desserts are relatively simple and may be ice cream with lychees, or traditional favourites like gulab jamun or pistachio kulfi. A concise yet good wine list offers some well known Australian labels, and a number of beers are available by the bottle, including a couple of Indian labels perfect for spicy food.

dishes, platters and home style sweets that have the locals coming back for more.

Tazé authentic mediterranean cuisine with a home-made feel in a new and modern setting is the formula that makes tazé a hit

I

n a city where Turkish cuisine is fairly well represented, this brand new restaurant in the northern end of Genge street is leading the way with a great menu of well prepared mediterranean dishes, platters and home style sweets that have the locals coming back for more. The predominently Turkish menu bills itself as mediterranean and includes Greek and Spanish dishes amongst others. It also – rather uniquely in an ethnic eatery – offers breakfast, a typical offering being Turkish bread with feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, sucuk salami and eggs. Mezze may be an excellent

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

selection of dips that go far and above the norm, or saganaki, grilled haloumi cheese with a lemon and balsamic reduction. Olives are marinated in-house and come with Persian feta and a side of bread sticks; and zucchini fritters are shallow fried with a superior, denser texture than expected. A gourmet pidé may be karadesli, with prawns, spinach, tomato, capsicum, onion and fresh herbs; or pastirmali, with Turkish pastrami, eggs and cheese. From the grill, expect a range of skewered and marinated lamb, chicken or prawns. In keeping with the holistic mediterranean theme, main dishes

may be a typically Turkish wood-fired eggplant filled with spiced minced beef and roasted vegetables; or Moroccan lamb rump, a seafood linguine, or even a paella. Sweets are available from the front counter and home made. Find a seriously syrupy revani semolina cake or a rice pudding amongst other traditional favourites. The welcoming dining room is large and airy – with high ceilings, full length windows and a mezzanine – and decorated with interesting trinkets, a wall hung rug and geometric patterns on seat fabrics, and an outdoor area is always busy with happy diners.

Cream Café & Bar PROMINENTLY POSITIONED AT THE HEART OF CANBERRA’S NORTH QUARTER, AND WITH A FIT-OUT THAT REMAINS STYLISH AND URBANE, CREAM CONTINUES TO WOW THEM WITH ITS NEW MENU

E

ven though this modern, bright café and bar continues to be a leading light on the corner of Bunda street, the ethos of evolution embedded in the culture here sees a new menu take things to the next level. The thing about Cream has always been the inclusiveness, and patrons are welcome to just have a coffee and watch the world go by, catch up with friends over a cocktail, or have a full blown dinner experience with all the trimmings. The menu may be described as modern Australian, with a spirit of fusion that works well. Mediterranean flavours seem

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

to dominate, but somehow blend well with Asian and Indian to create a unique touch. For tapas, lightly fried haloumi shares a plate with a capsicum jam; and salt and pepper quail with chilli chutney. A lamb cutlet comes with honey mustard aioli, and lightly fried calamari is served with a mango and lime relish. Main meals include slow braised lamb shanks with white wine and oregano, roasted lemon potatoes, tzatziki and fig chutney; a duck risotto with shallots, chilli, choy sum and shitake mushrooms; and the ever popular signature chimmichunga: tandoori chicken wrapped in a flour tor tilla

along with bacon, mozzarella and chipotle chilli. Breakfast remains popular as ever, and may be a bruschetta with Persian fetta, portobello mushrooms, olive pesto and truffle infused olive oil; waffles with caramelised toffee apple, maple syrup and ice-cream; or a “Cream“ big breakfast. Cream’s own blend of coffee is as good as ever and is available through the popular “express” window every morning, and of course, to enjoy in the comfortable surrounds all day.

Sammy’s Kitchen For good quality Chinese or Asian food in the city, you should head to North Quarter on Bunda Street where you will find Sammy’s Kitchen

T

his mainstay of the city’s dining landscape is big, bright and bustling for lunch and dinner. The current restaurant is a newer version of Sammy’s – after a relocation to Nor th Quar ter from across the street a few years ago – but still well known for simple high quality Chinese and Malay cuisine with a focus on traditional favourites. Many Canberrans would rate Sammy’s when discussing where you can find the city’s best

laksa or hawker noodle dishes like char kway teow – chicken, prawns, fish cakes, chives, egg and bean sprouts – and mee goreng – fried wheat noodles with bean sprouts, chilli, tomatoes, beef mince. Also extremely popular here are a number of chef ’s favourites that include Shan Tung chicken – deep fried and shredded with cucumber, garlic and peanuts; or the Sammy’s Kitchen special – marinated pork, chicken, calamari, scallops and broccoli

in oyster sauce. Seriously wor th a tr y are some of the range of Malaysian curry dishes like gulai ayam – boneless chicken with potatoes and fragrant curry. Owner Sammy Chui is a veteran of the Canberra food industry, having been a par tner in the famous Timmy’s Kitchen in Manuka – which he still owns – for many years before opening Sammy’s eighteen years ago.

Jewel of India WEST ROW HAS BEEN A DESTINATION FOR GOOD FOOD FOR SOME TIME, AND THE ADDITION OF JEWEL OF INDIA HAS JUST EXPANDED ON THE DIVERSITY AVAILABLE AT THIS STYLISH EAT STREET

T

his well known restaurant has been delivering quality Indian in Canberra for many years in the inner south, and with their new location in the Melbourne Building now in full swing, traditional quality Indian has found a home on the west side of the city. With beautifully presented standards and a generous banquet offering, the menu cer tainly delivers on a range of scorching southern flavours as well as the aromatic fare of the nor th. In fact, Jewel is one Indian restaurant that’s not afraid to go beyond the standards of the nor th and introduce regional Indian cuisine. For star ters, expect the typical

samosas, onion bhaji and naan with assor ted dips, but make sure to try fried perch fillets flavoured with carom seeds and black pepper, or spinach fritters on a tangy potato salad; and cer tainly wor th ordering, are delicately handled lamb cutlets. Dishes from Goa and other southern regions feature prominently, such as a prawns cooked in a spicy coconut curry sauce, or chicken Chettinad - a speciality from southern India - with its pepper spiced curry. A number of goat dishes are available and highly recommended, along with the expected lamb roganjosh and spinach based saags. Vegetarians are well catered for, with

For desser t, find a soothing choice of kulfis alongside simple ice-cream offerings and of course, a great gulab jamun. The dining room is a bright, smar t looking space with an interior cour tyard and lots of room for larger groups, and the location is an easy walk from a number of city hotels, including the Quest apar tments, the Novotel and Medina.

Coo Japanese Izakaya Mamoru Aizawa, owner of well known Japanese restaurant Iori, delivers an authentic izakaya experience at Coo Japanese Izakaya

C

oo Izakaya is the latest venture of chef Mamoru Aizawa, who is well known in Canberra for his great quality Japanese food. Lovers of this cuisine have been dining out at his restaurant IORI for close to a decade, and now Mamoru has opened Coo just a couple of doors down with a view to offering a traditional Izakaya experience in the nation’s capital. Coo offers a range of sake with a delicious selection of morsels designed to share, in a casual environment. Be sure to tr y the spider roll, an inver ted sushi roll made up of soft shell crab tempura,

avocado, cucumber and aburi salmon; or the teri wagyu, using this famous premium beef with Coo’s own teriyaki sauce and salad. For more adventurous diners, there is the chef ’s special menu where a selection of limited items can be found. Here you can order thin sliced ox tongue filled with asparagus and served with a rice vinegar dipping sauce; or a miso based, fish ball soup with shiitake mushroom and bukchoy. For those diners looking for something other than izakaya style dining, Coo also offers a range of bento combinations such as Coo Zen, a selection

featuring menu items such as wagyu, gyoza, fried chicken or prawn tempura. The best way to enjoy your night at Coo is to order meals to share throughout the evening, make sure you try a sake or two, and remember, it’s casual and it’s fun. Décor is simple and in keeping with the theme of casual and inexpensive dining, with traditional red paper lanterns adding to the atmosphere. Or for a more formal experience with the same authentic flavours, sister restaurant IORI is just a few doors up.

The Grill A GREAT STEAK AND A MENU INCORPORATING NATIVE PRODUCE CAN BE FOUND AT CASINO CANBERRA, OVERLOOKING THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE GAMING FLOOR

O

ccupying a long narrow space at the back of Casino Canberra, replete with polished parquetr y floors, luxurious drapes, novel former-prime-minister mannequins and views to Glebe Park, The Grill is doing great things with a Modern Australian menu that finds ways to incorporate native produce with success. In his seven months as executive chef here, Upul Keer thisinghe has been inspired by the idea of making the most of the treasures that are indigenous to this countr y - yet sadly overlooked by many chefs - so expect to see such ingredients as

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

wattle seed or macadamia nuts featuring on this menu. His take on oysters kilpatrick will feature yakagiri, or bush tomato spice, in its sauce; and lemon myr tle will add a twist to a chicken salad. From the grill, eye fillet is marinated in wattle seed, topped with prawns and a pepper gravy, and served with baby spinach and potato mash. Other mains may include crisp skin salmon fillet served with stirfry vegetables, asparagus tips and steamed rice or lamb cutlets, grilled and served with a mint and red wine reduction. Asian flavours are represented here — and reflect Upul’s

international experience — with prawns and scallops in mild curry broth, or a main of roast duck with fragrant rice and bok choy. King O'Malleys contributions to the local community are well known and have seen it become a hub for Canberrans celebrating some of the biggest annual events such as St Patricks Day, Movember, and the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave for a Cure, so grab a beer, enjoy the sunshine and meet the locals.

J

ust one block from the city, heritage listed Gorman House is the home of Sage, a sophisticated little restaurant with a smart dining room opening onto an open air garden room with a recycled timber deck ,and outdoor bar serving tapas, cocktails and boutique beers. Brothers Peter and Michael Harrington oversee a knowledgeable frontof-house team, complementing an exciting menu created by head chef Clement Chauvin. Originally from France, and bringing with him an impressive resume – having worked at such noteworthy restaurants as 2 Michelin

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

starred Pic and Nicolas La Bec, as well as Gordon Ramsays flagship Claridges in London – Clement has now made Canberra his home. His menu highlights the best of modern Europe, and stays true to his French sensibilities. Start with a range of simple appetisers that depend on quality of ingredient, such as crispy whitebait or mixed olives. Entrees may be confit ocean trout with zucchini flowers, horseradish cream and lavender crumbs, or a slow braised pork belly with compressed melon, pork scratchings and pistachio paste. For mains, caramelized Riverina lamb rump comes with grilled baby

eggplant, zucchini puree and pepperonata; and bouillabaisse is a medley of snapper, scallop, prawn, mussel and clam, garnished with rouille and served with grilled sourdough. Sides of peas with speck, onion & cos lettuce are pure French bistro, and desserts are a must. Reinvented classics like a perfect peach Melba souffle sit side by side with a chocolate trilogy: parfait, granita and ganache, with salted caramel and toasted marshmallow. A well chosen bottle from the extensive wine list rounds off the experience and confirms Sage’s place as a landmark of the Canberra culinary scene.

ere is an inner nor th eatery with an unfussed atmosphere–slightly distressed café chairs and tables, polished concrete floors and muted browns create the landscape in which unpretentious waiting staff navigate the room, always friendly yet non intrusive. The open kitchen shares the space with the diners, in a way communicating the fact that this is no show pony. Having done his time in some of the finest restaurants around the world, owner and chef Christian Hauberg now outright rejects million dollar fitouts in favour of rustic simplicity; and shuns haute cuisine in favour of real, flavoursome food and masterful technique. The menu highlights all that is good about European food by staying

close to its rural roots. One may find roasted octopus with merguez sausage and white beans; or a duck confit with kipfler potatoes and hazelnuts. Heartier dishes may include braised lamb shanks with parsley puree and red onion confit. A great selection is also available on the blackboard and almost always features a perfect dry-aged sirloin. Desser ts include sophisticated offerings such as white chocolate parfait with peaches poached in champagne. Most dishes are available as either entrée or main, and prices can only be described as sensible. A small and interesting wine list focuses on European bistro wines as well as Canberra region labels.

Breakfast is another Debacle specialty. It may be as simple as spicy fruit bread with home made jams or a massive Debacle Recovery Brekky, which includes fried eggs, tomato, baked beans, bacon, rosti, snags, mushrooms,

itting only metres from the water, it’s hard to imagine this restaurant was redeveloped from a delapidated rowing pavillion. It’s cer tainly come a long way, becoming one of Canberra’s most popular wedding venues, a favourite with the city’s diplomatic community and winning several local and national hospitality awards. The interior is simple and tasteful – white linen on the tables, a smattering of ar tworks and old world wood panelling separating the dining rooms – allowing the view to be the star. On

the floor, owner and manager James Souter keeps things humming along with his efficient and knowledgeable team. From the kitchen, chef Darren Tetley serves up a selection of modern Austratian dishes that match the elegance of the surroundings. Expect a star ter of chermoula prawns with tomato, capsicum and lemon tian, and an avocado and coriander quenelle with salsa verde; or a roasted quail breast with lemon thyme and a mini Waldorf salad. For mains, lamb rack is cumin infused and sits on a spiced eggplant,

capsicum and olive compote along with tzatziki and confit chilli; and a snapper fillet comes with a warm potato, green bean and roast tomato salad with olive tapenade and anchovy mayonnaise. For desser t, a rosewater and strawberry soufflé with lavender double cream and toffee dust is highly recommended. The extensive wine list features a sizeable selection of Canberra region wines, alongside great labels from Australia’s best regions, and an impressive list of French champagnes that indicate a “big night out” approach here.

Grilled dishes have their own space dedicted on the menu, and may be 220 gram wagyu sirloin steak, or a corn fed chicken breast, served with a choice of sauces or jus and a side of mashed potato or green beans. Service is of high quality and exactly what you would expect from this type of establishment, with professional well informed

and attentive staff on hand to make things run smoothly. An extensive wine list with some great Australian or local labels complements the fresh and seasonal menu, and the desserts are a cut above. A pineapple jelly may come with coconut couscous and cinnamon ice cream, or caramelised chocolate flan with cremĂŠ anglaise may be just the thing with your after dinner coffee. The quality of the produce and the expertise of the chefs are given centre-stage

Ruby Chinese Restaurant Specialising in live seafood and classic Cantonese cuisine, Ruby Chinese Restaurant finds itself hitting all the right notes with the cosmopolitan set, despite barely changing its menu for a quarter of a century

T

hough the safe and familiar options such as Mongolian lamb or satay chicken appear on the menu, and are presented to a ver y high standard here, you’ll miss the point if you only order in that vein. Ruby’s strength lies in the simple and fresh presentation of traditional dishes, where the quality of the produce and the exper tise of the chefs are given centre-stage. Nowhere is this more evident than in the live seafood, trucked in regularly from around Australia.

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

Expect to find a range of fish such as coral trout or morwong, lobster, eel or abalone in the impressive tank displays that line the walls. It is here that you should enlist the help of the waitstaff and trust in their advice, they do know best. One of the original restaurants on Dickson’s Woolley street, Ruby reminds one of a classic Chinatown eatery, and has contributed to cementing this street’s reputation as the mecca of Asian dining in Canberra. And like a Chinatown eatery,

Ruby is open late – it is not uncommon to find this restaurant still open until midnight, and more often than not, catering to other Chinese restaurateurs. While patronage of an ‘ethnic’ eatery by the diaspora en masse is the conventional formula used to judge a place for quality and authenticity, this endorsement – by exper ts in their field – should serve as a sign of their standing.

Firestone sits comfortably in Dickson’s eclectic smörgåsbord of flavour

Firestone Whilst it’s true that Dickson’s Woolley street is known as the Chinatown of Canberra, in actual fact this well known eat street caters to a vast array of tastes, including Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, and of course, Italian

F

irestone sits comfor tably in Dickson’s Woolley street, adding a contemporar y Italian touch to the eclectic smörgåsbord of flavour in this well known eat street. The menu features wood-fired pizzas along with a range of pastas, risottos, sharing tapas style dishes and mains. Wood-fired pizzas are perfectly crisp, and calzones may be stuffed with traditional fillings like mozzarella, pepperoni and ar tichoke. Sharing plates may be prosciutto wrapped scallops with basil oil; or zucchini and gorgonzola fritters. Coffin Bay oysters come in various styles,

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

and include bloody mar y shots, kilpatrick, or natural with a tequila lime sorbet. Pasta may include spaghetti with poached chicken, preser ved lemon, sage and goat’s cheese; or gnocchi with a braised rabbit and porcini mushroom cream sauce. For mains, a 500 gram peppered rib eye comes with caramelised onion and a mustard sauce; and lamb shanks with white wine, rosemar y and thyme are one of the more popular choices here. The sweet, however gets quite novel. A range of sweet pizzas such as strawberr y, marshmallow and white chocolate give a

twist on desser t that works surprisingly well. The restaurant has a fresh and hip feel. Plush bench seats run the length of the long narrow space and dark timber furniture sits on a polished concrete floor. Whilst the feeling here is casual and light, staff are always attentive and friendly. The wine list features a good selection of Australian wines, including a couple of choice drops by the ver y reputable local Nick O’Lear y. Impor ted and Australian beers cover the beverages quite well, and believe it or not, you can even have a KB tinnie!

A couple of generations of Italian family working together to produce an affordable “home made” experience.

Zeffirelli Pizza Restaurant DICKSON’S ZEFFIRELLI RESTAURANT IS ALL ABOUT OFFERING A REAL ALTERNATIVE IN AFFORDABLE DINING, AND PROOF THAT FAMILIES DON’T HAVE TO RESORT TO THE TYPICAL CHOICES OF FAST FOOD CHAINS.

T

his family run business may look and feel a little like a franchise, but it has at its roots the authenticity of a couple of generations of Italian family working together to produce an affordable “home made” experience. Manager and co-owner Joe Pelle is passionate about offering a real alternative to the usual fast food choices made by busy families, and this philosophy underpins what Zeffirelli is all about. Pasta such as Cannelloni, Lasagne, Ravioli and Gnocchi are all made by the Pelle women, and are available with a choice of sauce. Here you can choose

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

your pasta and have it with any one of the extensive sauces on the menu. Mains are a mix of classic Italiana – Veal Scaloppine, or Salcicce, Italian sausage made on the premises daily – and dishes that deviate from the typical Italian fare, as indicated by offerings like chicken schnitzel, fish and chips, or Atlantic salmon. An extensive pizza menu features a predictable but popular selection – think Tropical, Meat Lovers, etc. – in small medium or large; and a medium only range with some more interesting toppings that may include satay chicken, roasted pumpkin, or the

“Nonna’s Choice”, a classic bruschetta mix of diced tomato and basil on top of cheese, sausage, mushroom and onion. The wine list is well priced and offers Australian, New Zealand and Italian labels, house wines star t from as low as $2.90 per glass, or can be ordered by the litre or half litre carafe, and a good range of bottled beers are available. The dining room is expansive and bustling, adorned simply with classic old Italian aperitif posters, and a large outdoor area is always popular in warmer months.

A restaurant that has established itself as one of Canberra’s premium dining destinations.

Aubergine Located in the leafy inner south suburb of Griffith, Aubergine is a sophisticated restaurant delivering a menu of immaculately presented and refined dishes

J

ust a kilometre away from Manuka and home to half a dozen eateries, Griffith’s Barker street is where you will find Aubergine, a restaurant that has established itself as one of Canberra’s premium dining destinations. Aubergine was given an invigorating lift a couple of years ago when well respected chef/owner Ben Willis took over, and now finds itself firmly in the upper echelons of the Canberra dining landscape. Food presentation here is immaculate and contemporary, and the

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

flavours are delicate and refined in a menu that changes regularly. For starters, expect pickled octopus with watermelon, baby beetroot and a horseradish cream; or an organic chicken ballotine with mixed mushrooms and buckwheat risotto. Mains may be mustard crust pork loin with black pudding, a pork croquette and braised fennel; or a fillet of ocean trout with a caramelised endive tart, baby leek and red wine jus. To finish, one may find a heavenly vanilla pannacotta with poached peach and

raspberry sorbet, served simply layered in a glass; a crêpe suzette with mango ice-cream or a selection of fine European cheeses. In the dining room, plush carpets, muted browns and creams and natural timber fixtures are offset by striking beehive-like light fittings. By day, the sun streams through floor to ceiling windows and by night, the room takes on a warmer, more intimate feel. Service is understated and efficient, with waiting staff attentive but not intrusive.

Choose a starter of pickled mixed beetroot, goat’s cheese whip, chives and verjus vinaigrette; or a vodka cured kingfish sashimi with wakame salad and apple cider dressing. For mains, a Thai style snapper fillet, scampi and half shell scallop come with udon noodles, daikon radish and a light green curry sauce; and a grilled sirloin is served with kipfler potato, wild mushrooms, garlic scape and cabernet jus. Breakfast is back, with standouts like a wild mushroom omelette mushroom with herb mascarpone and a shaved fennel salad

leading the way; and a house-ground beefburger on sourdough with seeded mustard aioli, swiss cheese, tomato, organic greens and rustic fries a hit with the lunch crowd. Sweet tooths will be satisfied with a vanilla and cointreau brulee with candied orange and strawberry coulis; or a fig baklava with butterscotch foam, Turkish delight and amaretto ice cream. N

amed after Chiang Rai, a region in the nor th of Thailand, Thai Chiang Rai has consistently offered authentic and sometimes unique dishes that have impressed enough to see it win awards for Thai cooking in the ACT on a number of occasions. Whilst many lovers of this cuisine are drawn by the usual, and ver y well executed, array of stir fries such as the ever popular pad Thai, those in the know come seeking owner and chef Noy Phachantharong’s list of house specials.

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

Typical to his reper toire is the duck paa lo, a traditional and popular slow cooked dish that incorporates fruit as a foil to gamey duck, made special by the use of dried figs, cooked in herbs and spices and served with steamed asparagus; or scallops stir fried with basil, mild chilli, onion, shallots and snow peas and topped with macadamia nuts. Other specialities may include chicken fillets grilled and served with a Thai paw-paw salad and served with sticky rice; or crispy

roasted chicken with cucumber, chilli, garlic, coriander and soy sauce. Salads such as larb are executed well, and a good range of vegetarian dishes are given their own section in the menu. The interior is surprisingly warm and cosy for such a large space. Ceilings are high and interior details are painted in blue and yellow with bold touches of red, and walls are adorned with the occasional authentic item, such as a gorgeous handmade golden tapestry.

family recipes are refined to complement the climate and the wide variety of wines and beers that are enjoyed in Australia

Madam Woo An imaginative approach to food is what owners Jacky and Ruby Woo deliver in this colourful and friendly restaurant. Jacky and his chefs continually refine the Woo family recipes that make this restaurant so popular

T

he philosophy behind Madam Woo’s cuisine that makes it unique is that “each continent has its own distinct flavour, therefore the food must be adapted to suit its environment”. Traditional Woo family recipes are refined to complement the climate and the wide variety of wines and beers that are enjoyed in Australia. Madam Woo offers dishes of mostly Malaysian, Thai, Singaporean, Chinese, and Vietnamese origins, and usually

recommend a wine or beer to match. For star ters, try salt and pepper silver anchovies, recommended with beer, or crispy spring rolls filled with shredded roast duck and vegetables. For mains, chicken fillet is cooked with peas, carrots, onion and broccoli in a Japanese curry sauce and matched with verdelho. Roasted duck pieces are topped with pineapple, onion, chilli, lemongrass, shallot and carrots in a special sweet, sour

and hot sauce, and are best consumed with a cabernet merlot. On the floor, efficient and cheerful service is managed by Jacky’s wife, Ruby. Whilst the restaurant looks quite small from the street, there are two distinct dining areas here. Out the back a rustic looking space is ideal for larger groups while the fitout at the front is vibrant and funky and, like the food, adds its own distinct flavour to the dining scene of Kingston.

This restaurant has not escaped the attention of

INNER

neighbourhood regulars, or high ranking pollies

when parliament is sitting

La Dolce Vita Over the years, La Dolce Vita has become an institution in the leafy inner south suburb of Kingston. Dining here for the first time, one may sense a familial warmth in this rustic eatery

M

any patrons will know the menu off by hear t – and the waiting staff by name. Many will have frequented a number of restaurants, over the past twenty years or so, operated by charismatic owner and chef Salvatore Passari. Established in 1986, La Dolce Vita is the oldest Italian restaurant in Kingston, and has not escaped the attention of neighbourhood regulars, or high ranking pollies when parliament is sitting. Plate-sized pizzas are always good with ingredients such

as prosciutto or ham off the bone, fresh mushrooms or ar tichokes. Pastas range from standards like spaghetti marinara, an ample ser ve with fresh seafood done in tomato or cream, or specials of the house such as the penne mosca vita, a great tasting combination of vodka, smoked salmon and cream. The standout, however, is the ricotta filled ravioli. Made fresh daily by Salvatore’s mother Anna – a for ty year veteran of the restaurant game – it is ser ved with a simple sauce of

tomato and basil or a bacon mushroom and cream sauce, and should not be missed. Mains include a number of traditional veal dishes such as saltimbocca – a stack of panfried veal and bacon with a bay leaf sauce; or vitello limone, veal fillets with a tar t lemon sauce. Finish with a classic triamisu and an espresso, and take in the neighbourhood trattoria ambience.

Chef Nino Pagano – a true artisan – works with passion, combining decades of experience in the kitchens of Rome with fresh local ingredients

Figaro It’s a joy to find a restaurant that balances a warm and friendly ambience with great food, and that is exactly what Figaro has managed to achieve

T

his relaxed and friendly little restaurant just feels inviting, and is a testament to the authenticity that owners John Barone and Jemma Gundry insist upon. As floor manager, Jemma makes one immediately comfortable by her genuine warmth, effortlessly chatting with everyone from local families to some of the most influential figures in business and government. In the kitchen, Chef Nino Pagano – a true artisan – works with passion, combining decades of experience in Rome with fresh local ingredients, creating classic tastes rarely found in such an accessible setting. Simple

things are done well here. Starters may be a classic bruschetta, chilli mussels or an antipasto. Pastas such as fettuccine and gnocchi are made in house, with sauces that cannot hide their origins. Traditional Genovese style pesto is teamed with sun-dried tomatoes and served with any pasta diners choose and black truffles, champignons and herb and provolone sauce are stars on a fettucine. Pizzas are made with stone ground flour and natural yeast in true artisan fashion, and toppings stay true to the spirit of authenticity, with prosciutto, double smoked ham, peppers, chilli and onions being

typical here. A look at the menu or blackboard, however, confirms seafood and meat dishes as the drawcards here. Swordfish or salmon feature on the blackboard, and veal is served in typical Italian style with mushrooms and black truffles in a herb cream sauce, or simply caramelised with an orange marsala sauce. Lamb cutlets come with garlic, vinegar, & rosemary in a white wine sauce, and chicken breast has cognac cream sauce with double smoked ham, mushrooms and green peppercorns. A good wine list is offered, along with a selection of Italian liqueurs and desserts to finish.

Academia della Cucina Italiana in Milan

L’unico Ristorante Italiano Authentic Italian cooking that includes wood fired pizzas, pastas and an appetising range of seafood in a rustic yet opulent setting can be found in this Kennedy street restaurant

L

’unico is the only Italian restaurant in Canberra – one of only 14 restaurants in Australia – endorsed by the Academia della Cucina Italiana in Milan. Authenticity is high on the list of priorities here, as is evidenced by the flowing and fluent Italian spoken by kitchen and floor staff alike. The spacious and inviting interior has some classic elements. High ceilings, timber and marble against warm red tones, and heavy framed paintings add to the feeling of old world charm and a sense of

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

the ‘big night out’. From the kitchen, expect a star ter of fiori di zucchini: fresh zucchini flowers stuffed with prosciutto, mozzarella and provolone; or a seafood antipasto with scallops, swordfish diced in a tomato sauce, and smoked salmon crostini amongst others. Pasta may include a cannelloni di carne, made on the premises, filled with slow cooked minced beef and fresh herbs and topped with parmesan. A range of mains include a number of chicken dishes such as pollo ai gamberi: oven baked

chicken breast with prawns and a creamy cognac and lemon sauce; or veal dishes like scaloppine ai funghi, pan fried and served with mushrooms, shallots, white wine and a demi glaze reduction. A broad range of wood fired pizzas are on offer as well, and here you may find L’unico tipping its hat to Aussie tradition. Yes, you can order a Tropicale, with ham and pineapple; and an Australiana with ham, bacon and eggs, alongside other more Italian sounding offerings.

La Rustica’s casual environment makes it a great family venue, and confirms it as a genuine neighbourhood

trattoria

La Rustica Trattoria La Rustica is one of Canberra’s most loved Italian restaurants, and for good reason. This family run business continues to turn out a huge selection of reliably good Italian dishes which include pastas, home made gnocchi, seafood and of course, pizzas

A

s the name of this Kingston restaurant implies, the food here is rustic and authentic, as the service, across all facets, is handled by the Callipari and Spadafora families with care and love. La Rustica’s casual environment makes it a great family venue, and confirms it as a genuine neighbourhood trattoria. Hailing from Calabria’s Mare Ionico in the southern tip of Italy, the kitchen staff bring with them the region’s culinary secrets. Expect to find a simple and delicious hand made gnocchi Sorrento, with

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

rich tomato and basil sauce; or the very popular spaghetti pescatore, absolutely crammed with fresh seafood. And as Calabrian cuisine contains a long tradition of seafood, expect to see much of it on the blackboard and on the regular menu. Don’t be surprised to find you can’t finish your meal as portions, especially pastas and risottos, are particularly generous. Mains are substantial, and may be beef tenderlions layered with a combination of spinach and crisp prosciutto, topped with a red wine jus; or a grilled perch fillet

topped with extra virgin olive oil and a lemon juice dressing.. Pizzas are a highlight, and follow the classic style, rather than the more modern interpretations on offer in many places these days. The Napoli is a simple mozzarella cheese, anchovy, olive and oregano affair, and a salsicce features Italian pork sausage, onion and chilli. Like the menu, La Rustica’s wine list is big. It offers Australian, New Zealand, and Italian labels. Décor is pleasant and bright with rustic touches, and seating is ample both indoors and outdoors.

Abell's Kopi T iam When looking for good quality Asian food in Manuka, it is good advice to overlook busy Franklin Street. Instead, head to the quieter Furneaux Street, where you will find Abell’s Kopi Tiam

S

er ving a modern style of Chinese and Malay cuisine, this bright and friendly little restaurant has been doing a consistently solid trade since it opened its doors in the mid nineties. Owners Abell Ong and Lorna Sim have managed to combine the tastes of their Malaysian and Chinese origins with an array of unique and innovative dishes and offer them on a menu that also

features traditional favourites. The formula has proven so popular that booking ahead is advisable even on the quieter nights. The dining room is colourful and informal and there is ample seating outside for those wishing to dine al fresco. That said, the food is what this place packs them in for, and the menu is exemplified by dishes such as ‘My mum’s laksa’, bee hoon noodles with coconut

curr y flavours and ser ved with chicken or seafood – one of the best in town; or sand whiting, tempura battered and accompanied by a nashi pear salad. Tofu is crisp fried and comes with a sweet chilli and peanut sauce; and crispy skinned chicken may be ser ved with coriander and a soy dipping sauce. Finish with a black sticky rice pudding and you will truly feel satisfied.

Brad Wolter continues to refine the menu and shows that family dining can be as sophisticated as the best of them

Le Rendezvous After four decades this manuka restaurant continues feeding the families of the inner south with its famous pizzas and italian inspired comfort food, along with a little modern flair

his restaurant continues to win awards and has cemented its place as one of Canberra’s most loved dining destinations for young and old. The reason has been the emphasis on looking after the whole family, and this means that the staff and management will go out of their way to make little ones feel at home with nice gestures like handing out colouring-in paper and crayons, leaving mums and dads to enjoy

their evening without being frowned upon for bringing the kids. Le Rendezvous chef and co-owner Brad Wolter continues to refine the menu and shows that family dining can be as sophisticated as the best of them; so alongside the pizzas and pastas that have been the mainstay in this restaurant for over for ty years, expect to find oven roasted salmon topped with salsa verde butter, ser ved with baby potatoes, calamari and

ar tichoke. Or perhaps a chargrilled eye fillet with garlic potato mash, goats cheese-filled mushrooms, greens and a beef jus. Wines are sensibly priced and a good range of beers is available. There is ample seating both inside and in the atrium area, and an island kiosk sits at the front of the restaurant ensuring all are contented at the end of their meals with gelati and slushies for the kids and coffee for the grownups.

Mint and coriander combine beautifully with rare beef in the ‘Crying Tiger’, a typically spicy and sour Thai salad that is served at room temperature and is perfect accompanied by a cold beer (the establishment is quick to recommend BeerLao). Expect to find simple desser ts that range from ice cream and cakes to black sticky

Mecca Bah fans of morroccan and middle eastern flavours will not be disappointed if they head to this stylish and opulent eatery at the apex of the terrace, manuka

M

ecca Bah, at the top of the esplanade at Manuka Terrace, offers a menu reliant on the adventurous use of exotic herbs and spices to create distinctive flavour combinations. Subtle flavours and fragrant spice combinations are drawn together with quality Australian produce to create a modern interpretation of Moroccan and Middle Eastern cuisine. The innovative menu encourages guests to taste a range of flavours in an informal, communal dining experience typical of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern tradition, and is perfect

for groups. Mezze are served in beautiful hand made serving dishes from Tunisia and may be kofte with yoghurt and mint sauce, kataifi pastries filled with Middle Eastern cheeses, or a salad of chickpeas and Lebanese sausage. Turkish pizzas may be roast pumpkin, chilli, pomegranate jam and feta; or spit roast lamb with yoghurt, rocket and sumac. Classic tagines, including lamb with preserved lemon, green olive and harissa, are a standout and should not be missed. A good range of wines, beers and cocktails are available to complement the

bold flavours on the menu. Warm colours, soft cushions, and Middle Eastern trimmings such as rows of colourful tagine pots and intricate geometric, Morrocan-style latticework decorate the restaurant. Deep banquette lounges allow guests to soak up the ambience, adding to the illusion of a traditional Moroccan eating house. An intimate private dining room offers some privacy for larger groups, and outside, the lovely heated outdoor area makes for a very inviting place to enjoy a meal for those who prefer al fresco dining.

A scrumptious menu that impresses sufficiently to have seen this restaurant take out major awards over the years

Ginseng over the years, Ginseng has won a number of awards – one of those being the 2007 national award for chinese restaurant – thereby confirming their position as a must visit spot for hungry travellers

T

he secret of success here is an uncomplicated Chinese menu with hints of Western technique employed by co-owner and chef Rockie Cheung in this lively double storey restaurant with Flinders Street views. The result is a refined and scrumptious menu that impresses sufficiently with dishes such as chicken, sausage and beancurd hotpot; or prawn, ginger and shallot with baby bok choy, to have seen this restaurant take out some major awards over the years. Some other

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

Asian flavours creep into the menu with great success, such as a very delicately flavoured wasabi steak; or shabu shabu – a platter of seafood and finely sliced scotch fillets with fresh vegetables cooked in a Japanese hot pot. Whilst not immediately on ones radar when thinking Chinese, the laksas here are very good and highly recommended. The mix of cuisines means a unique serving style – both individual starters and mains, and some 80 dishes for sharing are options. The dining rooms feature

relaxed cream and brown interiors along with glass windows on both floors which fold open for al fresco dining in the warmer months. Upstairs is the more formal setting, whilst on the ground floor, things are a little more lively, with the hustle and bustle of the street and the outdoor dining area. At the front, service leans towards the cheerful rather than the stuffy, and co-owner and manager Judy Tran is always on hand to make you feel welcome and ensure a smooth night out.

My Café takes in vast views of Manuka’s lively Franklin Street and offers a wide selection of quality café food

My Café FOR OVER 16 YEARS, MY CAFÉ HAS BEEN ONE OF CANBERRA’S MOST WELL KNOWN MEETING PLACES. SURROUNDED BY MANUKA’S POPULAR BARS AND CAFÉS, MY CAFÉ TAKES IN VAST VIEWS OF LIVELY FRANKLIN STREET

O

ffering a wide selection of quality café food, the modern Australian menu at My Café has a touch of the Mediterranean but owner Angelo Petrides sums it up in two words: “comfor t food”. Old favourites such as caesar salad and hear ty burgers rule the menu here, almost always accompanied by chips or wedges. The lamb jumbuck, however, remains the biggest seller. Lamb tenderloins marinated in bush herbs are ser ved on a bed of salad

w w w. t h i s i s c a n b e r r a . c o m . a u

and topped with home-made tomato and basil sauce. Almost as popular is the chicken breast fillet baked with Tasmanian brie, pine nuts and spinach, with a berr y glaze. Other meals include a 400 gram sirloin, chargrilled and ser ved with creamy mushroom or peppercorn sauce, or a chargrilled baby octopus salad marinated in lemon, garlic, white wine and fresh herbs on greens with kalamata olives & fetta cheese. The recently revamped menu now offers a good range of

vegan and gluten-free options, and My Café is also a popular breakfast spot which ser ves breakfast until 5pm ever y day. The outdoor area is bustling all day long, especially on sunny Canberra days. In winter, outdoor heaters keep the al fresco devotees warm and toasty and allow for Manuka's favourite pastime of people watching to continue uninterrupted. All in all, here is a place where you can easily lose track of time as you watch the world go by.

cuisine and The Bah continues on the theme, with a small bar menu featuring Middle Eastern flavours available throughout the day and night including Mecca Bah’s award-winning Turkish pizzas. The Bah offers a vast array of beverage options. Classic cocktails are on offer alongside some innovative originals such as a Turkish Delight, a vanilla vodka concoction with a cube

of that delicious oriental sweet submersed fully in a martini glass. Interesting wines, both international and domestic are on offer, as is a good range of beers from around the globe. The style is similar to Mecca Bah with warm colours, soft cushions, and exotic Middle Eastern furnishings, yet has its own unique twist and is a hot destination in its own right.

A

unique offering in the leafy inner south, Felt’s combination of pool tables, classy cocktails, a lounge and progressive music make it a great option for those looking for an after dinner drink, or just a place to have a fun night out with friends. Damask wallpaper, shear gold drapes and comfortable banquette seating combine with candlelight to give this upstairs bar a unique edgy feel and announce that it isn’t typical of what one might expect from a pool hall. Local boutique beers and ciders are available on tap, cocktails are served in teapots for two, with mismatched retro crockery adding a kitchy cool factor, and music hovers around funk and soul territory most weeknights. DJs liven things up a little on weekends, playing great disco and funk edits and keeping the dance floor busy without blasting ears out with commercial cookie cutter music.

Handbags and accessories coordinate with shoes, as do hats by talented local milliners Rachael Hanson and Cynthia Bryson. Escala is well worth a visit, if only to confirm what most women already know – that fabulous shoes are a joy!
