FG Tightens Noose on Expatriate Quota Administration, To Enforce Ban

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) yesterday announced that Nigeria's oil and condensate reserves as at January 2025 were 37.28 billion barrels, a decline of about 0.60 percent by THISDAY computation.

With the new data, Nigeria retained its position as the country with the second largest crude reserves in Africa, just behind Libya, which has an estimated 48.36 billion barrels of oil, although the West African nation remains the continent's biggest oil producer.

However, the country's gas stock hit 210.54 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF), rising 0.61 per cent, according to THISDAY checks, retaining its first position in Africa and about ninth globally and effectively making the country a gas nation.

EMT Sets Up Committee to Review Impact of US Tariffs, Global Commodity Price Shift

Ndubuisi Francis in Abuja

Nigeria’s Economic Maanagment Team (EMT) has set up a subcommittee tasked with conducting a detailed review of the direct and indirect economic impacts of both the emerging tariff measures and the global commodity price shifts.

The setting of the sub-committee came as the United States investment bank, J.P. Morgan urged investors to exit long positions in Nigerian Open Market Operation (OMO)

In recent years, Nigeria has sought to explore and exploit its gas resources, massively reducing flaring and intentionally searching for the resource, as against the past, where gas accidentally climbed to the surface in the process of drilling for crude oil.

In terms of gas reserves, Nigeria comes behind Russia, Iran, Qatar, United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Venezuela.

A statement released by the upstream regulator in Abuja, signed by the Chief Executive of the commission, Gbenga Komolafe, further stated that while for crude oil, reserves life index in Nigeria was 64 years as of the first day of this year, it was 93 years for gas.

According to the Commission, the release of the current reserves figures was in compliance with the relevant

bills, and cautioned that global risks—driven by falling oil prices and renewed trade tensions—could deepen Nigeria’s macroeconomic vulnerabilities.

In a research note dated April 9, 2025, titled: “Frontier Local Markets Strategy: Reducing Risk Further,” the bank had advised clients to close their positions in Nigerian T-bills as Brent crude oil approaches sub-$60 levels.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the

sections of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021.

In April last year, the commission had put the combined reserves of crude oil and condensate at 37.50 billion barrels, while the reserves of Associated Gas and Non-Associated Gas stood at 102.59 TCF and 106.67 TCF, respectively, to hit 209.26 TCF at the time.

At the time, Komolafe added that within the total reserves, crude oil and condensate were recorded at 31.56 billion barrels and 5.94 billion barrels, respectively.

“The commission, in keeping with its mandate as enshrined in the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021 (PIA), is committed to driving the efficiency and effectiveness of the upstream oil and gas sector, enhancing the growth of oil and gas reserves and ensuring sustainable increase in oil and gas

Economy, Mr. Wale Edun had on Monday, indicated that the EMT would meet to review the impact of the ongoing global trade war triggered by the United States of America on the Nigerian economy.

Owing to this, a statement issued by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Finance, Mohammed Manga, disclosed that the EMT had already met ànd set up a sub-committee to conduct a detailed review of the direct and indirect economic impacts of both

production for shared prosperity, as articulated in the Regulatory Action Plan (RAP) for 2024 and the near term.

“Against the foregoing, I am pleased to present to you an overview of the nation’s oil, condensate, associated gas, and non-associated gas reserves as of January 1, 2025, as follows: 2P crude oil and condensate reserves stand at 31.44 billion barrels and 5.84 billion barrels respectively, amounting to a total of 37.28 billion barrels.

“2P Associated Gas and NonAssociated Gas reserves stands at 101.03 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF) and 109.51 TCF, respectively, resulting in total gas reserves of 210.54 TCF. The reserves life index is 64 years and 93 years for oil and gas, respectively,” the statement added yesterday.

For clarity, 2P reserves also known as proven reserves, are a classification of oil and gas reserves that represent

the emerging tariff measures and the global commodity price shifts. Although the statement did not divulge the names of members of the sub-committee, it disclosed that it was composed of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning (including the Budget Office of the Federation), and the Central Bank of Nigeria of Nigeria.

The sub-committee, it added, had already held its inaugural meeting

the best estimate of recoverable resources in a particular area.

According to Komolafe, the release was in keeping with several portions of the law that mandates the Commission to make such public pronouncements on an annual basis.

“In view of the above, and in furtherance of Chapter 1, Part III, Section 7 (g), (i), (j), (k), (m), (q), (r), and other powers enabling me in this respect, I, Engr. Gbenga Olu Komolafe, Commission Chief Executive, hereby declare the total oil and condensate reserves of 37.28 billion barrels and total gas reserves of 210.54 trillion cubic feet as the official national petroleum reserves position as of January 1, 2025,” the statement added.

Globally, Nigeria ranks around 11th in proven crude oil reserves. Despite this strong reserve base, Nigeria's

and would present its findings to the full EMT without delay.

The statement read: "The EMT Chaired by the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun has convened a meeting earlier this week with participation from key ministries and agencies to assess the fiscal and economic implications of recent trade-related developments.

"Of particular focus was the recent announcements of tariff measures by the United States Government

global production share is relatively lower than its reserve ranking—mainly due to underinvestment, infrastructure issues, security concerns, and regulatory uncertainties.

This means that although in terms of reserves, Nigeria is a top-tier country, in terms of actual production and export capacity, it's operating below potential.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s crude oil production declined to a five-month low in March 2025, with the country recording as low as 1.4 million barrels per day during the period under consideration.

In November last year, when oil output began to pick up, Nigeria produced 1.48 million bpd; 1.48 million bpd in December; 1.53 million bpd in January; 1.46 million bpd in February, before the latest figure of 1.4 million bpd recorded last month.

NIGERIAN FILMMAKERS FIND SOLACE IN YOUTUBE FOR MOVIE DISTRIBUTION

A number of filmmakers who spoke with THISDAY confirmed this in separate interviews.

The filmmakers who have had their works distributed on the global video-sharing platform offered various reasons why the platform has now become a major distribution channel for Nollywood filmmakers and producers, disregarding the existing notion associated with the platform.

Over the past few months, Nigerians have witnessed YouTube channels driving conversations and becoming a new frontier for streaming Nollywood films following the pullback by other major platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.

A filmmaker, Mildred Okwo, said there are two schools of thought on this development.

Sighting the quick-fix syndrome and the easiest way out associated with situations.

“One says you have to remember Nollywood has been about quick fixes and the easiest way out. You can't blame them; it is the society we live in.

“No long-term plans just the quickest way to make money and reach the greatest amount of people. The second is that our practitioners are only going where Nigerians are.

“Majority of Nigerians consume their content on YouTube so Nollywood filmmakers have simply followed them there and they are assured of payment from the platforms.”

country after deportation.

Tunji-Ojo announced this when he addressed members of the Organised Private Sector of Nigeria (OPSN) yesterday in Lagos during the, “Engagement with The Federal Ministry of Interior on the New Expatriate Administration and Other Reforms,” which took place at Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) headquarters’ in Lagos State.

He said henceforth, the country’s landing and exit cards would be automated, which foreigners will possess before entering into Nigeria.

“We will automate the paper card. Go online to fill your landing card before flying into Nigeria. The exit card is very serious. It is a weapon to tackle visa over stayers. If your overstay carries penalty, you will pay it. Overstay for three months carries

According to her, majority of Nigerians can't afford other streaming platforms so they go for YouTube, which offers free screening.

Another filmmaker, Obi Emelonye said, YouTube has risen to a dominant position in the Nollywood monetisation food chain.

“Revenues from cinema these days have been reduced to a game of luck and at best a case of who screams the loudest. This makes life uncomfortable for filmmakers who spend on films over a certain budget,” he said.

Emelonye, also noted that in desperation today, filmmakers of every ilk are clamouring for subscribers and eyeballs on their YouTube channels.

In his contribution, Moses Inwang stressed that the awareness was getting higher and filmmakers are taking to the platform because its seamless for distribution.

“Filmmakers have been putting their movies on YouTube for a few years now or for many years actually.

“It’s just that the awareness is getting bigger now and a lot of filmmakers are now finding themselves on that platform or finding that platform as an option for distribution because it’s the most seamless platform for distribution.

“You don’t need a date, you don’t need anybody’s permission, you distribute your films on your own terms at your own date as you well please as long as you obey the YouTube guidelines you are good

five-year ban; if you overstay for one year, do not come back to this country. People will not come for two weeks’ tourism and stay for three years working in Nigeria,” he said.

The minister said these measures would come into effect from May 1, 2025, adding that a moratorium of three months would be given to allow foreigners to regularise their documentations.

“Penalty system will be activated after August 1, 2025. We cannot have laws without repercussion for disobedience. And I beg you our expatriates, whatever that you cannot do confidently in your home country, do not try it in Nigeria. I beg you that Nigeria is not a dumping ground.

“Please, our hospitality should not have the same dictionary meaning of

to go. “And the revenue is not bad considering that it is films, the duration will help you attract bigger revenue. Filmmakers are just finding out that it’s the right revenue generating model for their films as long as you know how to do a low-budget film I think YouTube is the right fit for you.”

Asked how long he thinks this development will remain, or likely change, he said “I think it’s here to stay as long as long as the YouTube platform exists then our filmmakers will keep releasing their movies on the platform.

“Like I said its only getting better we are only attracting more. You know YouTube is an advertiser based business model.

“So the awareness our films are creating is only attracting more advertisers to the platform and it means that the more advertisers that come from our region to YouTube, the more revenue content creators on YouTube will be able to generate.

“So if this kind of awareness, especially with films like ‘odogwu’ and ‘achalugo’ trending so much it’s not just on YouTube but on the entire social media space, that’s going to attract more advertisers and that’s a good thing for all content creators on YouTube.

“So I think moving forward it’s only going to get better, except one day we wake up and we see that YouTube has crashed! That will mean

stupidity. Nigeria will not abandon you. But please do not disgrace and mess up Nigeria,” the minister said.

He said cleaning up the expatriate and visa administration would require implementation of specific policies on the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC) and the introduction of a comprehensive insurance scheme that would cover the cost of deporting and repatriating expatriates and end the era of government subsidies.

Other measures, according to him, include the introduction of e-Visa and ensuring that the government recovers expenses on administrating expatriate quota management from fees charged on providing these services.

The minister explained: “The first thing that needs to be done is for us to

that filmmakers will start looking for another option and we always find other options.

On the low-budget notion associated with Nollywood productions on YouTube, he said, this development impacts.

“First of all YouTube is a lowbudget business model. I make films for N300 million to N500 million and up to N600 million. And unfortunately, I can’t put such films on YouTube.

“YouTube is not going to generate the revenue to cover this amount invested. So, the YouTube business model for a filmmaker is well suited to a low-budget production.

“So, it only means that as more filmmakers migrate to the YouTube platform, there’s going to be more low-budget films in production and less of the bigger budget films.

“I mean owing that also to the exit of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in our region. So yes there’s going to be more low-budget films in production and distribution in circulation to audiences.”

Another filmmaker, Victor Okpala, who has made films across YouTube, cinema, and streaming platforms said YouYube has become the main distribution platform for most Nollywood movies, especially from independent producers.

“Even big producers like Kunle Afolayan, Jade Osiberu and a whole lot of others have started hosted a YouTube channel and they are already uploading either their old films or

clear the system in a very transparent manner. So, you must do business in line with the laws of the land.”

He stated that certain things in both process and practice of expatriate administration in Nigeria were not right, especially charging of N300,000 and N250,000 on three years expatriate quota and work permit.

He said: “This is not competitive in any part of the world. This money cannot even buy air ticket for immigration officers to come and examine your business and be sure that it exists.

“My question is: why must the government use tax payers’ money to subsidise expatriate administration?”

He said the government would no longer grant frivolous expatriate quota to companies to bring in waitress, human resource managers and drivers,

and their potential impact on Nigeria’s economy. While crude oil—Nigeria’s major export—has not been directly targeted, the EMT noted the accompanying fall in the international oil price.

"To support evidence-based policymaking, the EMT has established a sub-committee tasked with conducting a detailed review of the direct and indirect economic impacts of both the emerging tariff measures and the global commodity price shifts.

Data released by the NUPRC yesterday indicated that the production figure represented 93 per cent of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota of 1.5 million bpd, down from 98 per cent in February.

Although the commission did not state the actual reasons for the decline, in March, the political problems in Rivers state, a major hub of Nigeria's oil and gas production, led to the temporary shutdown of a number of pipelines in the state after they were attacked.

According to the NUPRC document, the lowest and peak combined crude oil and condensate production in March were 1.46 million bpd and 1.76 million bpd respectively. OPEC does not compute condensate as part of member nations’ oil output.

shooting new ones for YouTube. The exit of Netflix and exit of Prime Video have also affected filmmakers.

“You can hardly see big budget movies being shot. A lot of people have taken a break, thinking through the process, deciding what to do or not to do this time around.

“And so we have found it to be a veritable platform to distribute our movies and a lot of people are making good movies, putting on it and are making good money (ROI) and that’s what really counts with artistic work.

“The problem of Nigerian movie industry has always been distribution. When Netflix came, a lot of people heaved a sigh of relief. Prime video came we said ‘oh thank God, God has answered our prayers. But the coming of this administration, floating of the Naira and everything affected the income of the streamers. When they left, YouTube became the go-to place for everyone.

“To be honest I don’t know how long YouTube is going to remain the go-to place for Nollywood producers to showcase their movies. I think what Nigerian movie industry lack is our inability to introspect, look inward and find solution. We are always looking to outsiders as our savior.

“The cinemas are trying but they are not enough. Hardly you make back your money from the cinemas. I have gone to the cinemas at least four times I can’t say I make back my

which are jobs Nigerians could do efficiently.

He also said that gone are the days when companies would engage a secondary school leaver to understudy a university trained expatriate engineer, simply to perpetuate the expatriate’s stay in Nigeria.

“Does it mean that we do not have engineering graduates that can be employed to understudy the expatriate?

“The relationship between us and you should be symbiotic. It should not be parasitic.

“On the issue of quota, I will be a little bit stricter. I was embarrassed when I was shown a quota for a waitress. I was ashamed that it was actually approved in the ministry.

“One of the biggest companies in Nigeria sent a request for an expatriate

money any of those times except for the big productions that they give special slot during the Christmas period. You can hardly see anybody exhibiting from January till maybe October or November say they made their money back.

“Nollywood is basically a low budget industry, that’s the truth. Whether we show cinema, or whatever, it’s low budget. If the shoot is 100 million naira here how much is 100M naira in dollars. That’s less than 100,000 dollars. Which blockbuster in Hollywood do they shoot with 100,000 dollars? So predominantly we are low-budget industry and we are okay."

For Kunle Afoloyan who recently released his 2016 thriller, The CEO on the platform, he said he decided to explore YouTube due to its global reach and the commercial purpose. He explained, “this is a film with so much potential.”

According to Afoloyan, releasing the multi-lingua movie on YouTube gives the larger audience an opportunity to enjoy it and to give it a new lease of life, having premiered it first some nine years ago.

“We decided to explore YouTube platform because since The CEO was released in 2016 it has only gone to the cinemas. And then from there to Dstv for like a year or two and then from there to Netflix and since then it’s been on Netflix. This was like 9yrs ago. Since then nobody has seen it outside the Netflix.”

quota for a driver. How can we do this to our country? Where is patriotism? Where is nationalism?”

“Why will a company bring in an expatriate human resource manager?

The government will not tolerate this,” he said.

He also warned those with criminal record not to apply for CERPAC because Nigeria is integrating its CERPAC system to high Interpol 247. So that Nigeria will not be a safe haven for those they are looking for. He blamed the fact that Nigeria has only 50,000 expatriates on its official record on corrupt practices because the number ought to have been higher. The minister disclosed that government has been spending billions of Naira on repatriation of foreigners.

Atiku, El-Rufai, Tambuwal, Others Visit Buhari, Speak on Plan for Strong Opposition Party

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that there are plans by major political parties to form a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 election.

Atiku stated this yesterday during a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.

The former Vice President was accompanied on the visit by former governors Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa and Achike Udenwa of Imo, among others.

In an interview with journalists after the visit, Atiku said the visit was for Sallah greetings to the former president.

On Tuesday, governors elected under the platform of the All

Progressives Congress (APC) paid a similar visit to Buhari. Atiku said the visit to Buhari had nothing to do with plans to form a strong opposition.

"There is plan for the major political parties to come together and form a strong opposition, but it is not part of our visit," Atiku said while fielding questions from journalists.

Also, on his verified X handle, Atiku said he had "wonderful time” with former President Buhari during the visit.

"As the Wazirin Adamawa, I was obligated to be in Adamawa during the Sallah celebrations.

Rivers Crisis: Seriake Dickson Calls for Calm

Sunday Ehigiator

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson, has called for calm in Rivers State amidst the ongoing political crisis.

The crisis, which pits Governor Siminalaye Fubara against his former ally and mentor, Nyesom Wike, now the Federal Capital Territory Minister, has recently raised concerns about the stability of the state and the Niger Delta region, especially after the state of emergency eventually declared by Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the state.

Speaking through a statement after his visit to the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalaye Fubara, the Senator representing Bayelsa West, urged all parties involved to prioritise peace and restraint in deescalating the tension.

He emphasised the need for stakeholders to place the overall wellbeing of Rivers State and its people above personal ambitions.

According to him, “This afternoon, I visited His Excellency, Governor Siminalaye Fubara, at his residence in Port Harcourt.

“We discussed the extreme political developments in the state in the last couple of weeks. I appreciated his calmness and peaceful disposition in the midst of unprecedented turbulence.

“In our frank conversation, which was private, he expressed confidence in the ability of the institutions and leadership of the country to do what

is right, and so do I.

“I want to commend the good people of Rivers State on both sides, for maintaining peace and order even in the midst of this extreme and rare political development as I have seen that while the state appears peaceful, it may very well be the peace of a graveyard which, any little trigger can alter the balance of peace in the state and across the region.

“In this regard, I want to appeal to all our people, the youths of Rivers State, and in particular the youths of Ijaw Nation, in Rivers State and across the Niger Delta, from Arogbo in Ondo State, to Ibeno in Akwa Ibom State, to continue to be peaceful and resist any provocation or incitement to violence.

“They should refrain from violence and destructive tendencies, particularly the destruction and vandalism of strategic oil and gas infrastructure in the region, which has the tendency to cause further pollution-damage to our already compromised environment, slow down the pace of economic development and activities in the region, and create fiscal challenges for government at all levels in the country, especially at this time when the global economy is experiencing unprecedented instability with consequences for all nations.

“On account of the above, I urge all stakeholders to place the overall well-being of Rivers State, its people, the Niger Delta region and the entire country in their decisions, utterances and actions.

Fitch Upgrades Nigeria to 'B' Rating, Stable Outlook on Policy Reforms

One of the global rating agencies, Fitch Ratings, has upgraded Nigeria's Long-Term (LT) ForeignCurrency (FC) Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to 'B', from 'B-'.

It also assigned Nigeria a stable outlook.

According to its assessment on Nigeria obtained on its website yesterday, the upgrade of the West African country reflected increased confidence in the government's broad commitment to policy reforms implemented since its move to orthodox economic policies in June 2023, including exchange rate liberalisation, monetary policy tightening and steps to end deficit monetisation and remove fuel subsidies.

“These have improved policy

coherence and credibility and reduced economic distortions and near-term risks to macroeconomic stability, enhancing resilience in the context of persistent domestic challenges and heightened external risks,” Fitch added.

It pointed out that the Stable Outlook reflects its expectation that Nigeria’s macroeconomic policy stance would sustain improvements in the functioning of the forex (FX) market and support the move to lower inflation, “although it will likely remain far higher than rating peers.”

“Additionally, we anticipate a continued reduction in external vulnerabilities through further easing of domestic FC supply constraints, while renewed energy sector reforms should help sustain

current account surpluses.

“Greater formalisation of FX activity including the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) recent introduction of an electronic FX matching platform and a new FX code to enhance transparency and efficiency, along with monetary policy tightening, has led to a greater rise in FX liquidity and general stability in the FX market after a 40 percent depreciation in 2024, closing the spread between the official and parallel exchange rates.

“Net official FX inflows through the CBN and autonomous sources rose by about 89 percent in 4Q24, compared to an eight percent rise in 4Q23. We expect continued formalisation of FX activity to support the exchange rate, although we anticipate modest

depreciation in the short term,” it added.

The CBN has tightened monetary conditions through a combination of policy rate hikes to 27.5% (up 875bp since February 2024) and use of prudential and operational tools such as open market operations (at rates closely aligned to the MPR) to strengthen monetary policy transmission after years of financial repression.

“We project inflation, which reached 23.2 percent year-on-year in February 2025 under the recently rebased CPI, to average 22% in 2025 ('B' median 4.3%) and 20% in 2026. Fitch does not anticipate a premature easing of monetary policy that would undermine the benign effects of the policy adjustment, given high inflation,” it added.

FG, Japan Sign $30.9m Agreements to Boost Start-ups Innovation, Stimulate Economy

The federal government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Japanese Government to create an enabling environment for business start-ups to boost their innovative ideas and impact the country.

The groundbreaking projects valued at a total sum of $30.9 million, included instruments for the "Development of the Start-up Hub" which is being implemented by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and valued at $9.9 million.

The hub, which would be established in Abuja, would serve as a central node in the country's innovation ecosystem, providing entrepreneurs with access to essential resources, mentorship, networking opportunities, and technical support.

The second intervention involved a project for the "Development of Supporting Environment for Social

Start-ups in Nigeria," implemented by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and valued at $21 million.

This was designed to support startups and complements the establishment of the start-up hub, and aims to create a robust support structure for Nigerian entrepreneurs who are developing innovative solutions to pressing social challenges.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, endorsed the partnership on behalf of the federal government, while the Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Japan, Mr. Kozaki Hitoshi, signed for the Japanese Government.

The minister expressed gratitude to the Japanese Government for the series of interventions being carried through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Embassy of Japan towards improving the quality of lives of Nigerians.

He said both interventions which

are multi-sectoral are clearly aligned with the current administration's Renewed Hope Agenda which implies that there is visible synergy between both countries.

Bagudu further reaffirmed the federal government's unflinching support to JICA and the Embassy of Japan, and extension to the Japanese Government, towards ensuring successful implementation of these projects.

In his remarks, Hitoshi noted that both countries have enjoyed decades of fruitful partnership across many sectors, adding "our relationship continues to deepen and evolve, reflecting our shared commitment to sustainable development and mutual prosperity."

He said the ceremony marked another significant milestone in the partnership between Nigeria and Japan.

He said, "I am excited to announce that the first project we are signing today focuses on establishing a start-up hub in Abuja. This hub will serve as a central node in Nigeria's innovation

ecosystem, providing entrepreneurs with access to essential resources, mentorship, networking opportunities, and technical support.

"We invest in this physical and institutional infrastructure to empower Nigerian innovators to transform their ideas into viable businesses that can create jobs, generate economic value, and contribute to Nigeria's national development priorities.

"This also marks a historic undertaking by the Government of Japan to launch this type of fund project for the first time.

"What makes this project unique is that the Nigerian Government itself will set up the fund with the aim of investing in start-up companies that solve social problems, co-funded equally by the Japanese and Nigerian Governments."

Hitoshi added, "And given the time needed to foster start-ups working in social development, the fund will run for 13 years and NSIA will manage its operation.

CONVOCATION CEREMONY...

Emergency Rule: NBA Relocates Conference from Rivers to Enugu

Alex Enumah in Abuja

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced a shift in its forthcoming Annual General Conference from the "Garden City" of Port Harcourt, Rivers State to the "Coal City" in Enugu State.

The change in venue, according to the umbrella body for legal practitioners in the country, was occasioned by suspension of democratically elected state officials by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government.

The NBA in a statement jointly signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara and Chairman of the AGC Planning Committee, Mr. Emeka Obegolu, SAN, stressed that, "the NBA could not, in good conscience, proceed with the AGC in a state governed unconstitutionally by a Sole Administrator."

The statement recalled that prior to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, registration figures had soared, reflecting the excitement and eagerness of members to attend.

"However, the unfortunate turn of events in Rivers State has understandably stalled the momentum and affected advanced preparations for the conference.

"Currently, Rivers State is being governed by a retired military officer, appointed as a Sole Administrator, who operates with a command-style approach that disregards constitutional provisions, court decisions, and pending litigation.

"His actions have undermined

Insinuation

democratic institutions and processes, flouting the rule of law with impunity. Though clad in civilian attire, he governs as though the state is under military rule."

The leadership pointed out that following the development, members started clamouring for a change; with several meetings and a decision to relocate from Rivers to Enugu was made.

"The voices of our members, particularly those calling for a change of venue, grew stronger over time.

We convened meetings with the Chairmen of NBA branches in Rivers State and held an emergency session of the National Executive Council (NEC) on March 27, 2025.

The overwhelming consensus was that the NBA could not, in good conscience, proceed with the AGC in a state governed unconstitutionally by a Sole Administrator.

"The NEC reaffirmed that the state of emergency declared in Rivers State violates Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. It further noted that the suspension of elected officials and democratic institutions contravenes Sections 11 and 188 of the Constitution.

"The purported ratification by the National Assembly, executed via voice vote rather than the constitutionally required two-thirds majority amounts to a grave constitutional subversion. Even if the proper procedure had been followed, it would not legitimise an unconstitutional proclamation.

"Given these undemocratic developments, Port Harcourt can no longer be considered a justifiable

of Lopsidedness in Appointments Unfounded, Insists FG

The Federal Government has refuted claims of lopsidedness in the composition of federal appointments circulating in the social media.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) in a statement, yesterday categorically denied the insinuations while emphasizing its unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness, equity and national unity.

The statement, signed by the Director Information and Public Relations Office of the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, said all appointments were made in strict adherence to federal character principle, as enshrined in Section 14 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

It reiterates President Bola Tinubu’s firm belief in the unity of Nigeria and is guided by the ideals of fairness and

tenets of justice in all appointments.

“This Administration is dedicated to ensuring that all regions and demographics of the country are adequately represented in its institutions and agencies.

The OSGF therefore, urges the public to disregard unfounded speculations and rely on official Government sources for accurate information.

The Government remains steadfast in its pursuit of a prosperous, united and equitable Nigeria, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of this Administration. Pokers of embers of hate and disunity who carry tendentious and unfounded allegations should never be taken seriously by Nigerians,” the statement said.

It said all inquiries with respect to this matter should be channeled through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation which is the official custodian of such appointments.

The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Senator Ali Ndume, yesterday alleged that the Boko Haram terrorist group are presently in control of three territories in Borno State.

This was just as Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, held crucial closed-door meetings with Nigeria’s top military leadership

in Abuja to address the security concerns in his state.

Ndume, listed the areas under the control of the terrorist group to include Gudumbali, Marte and Abadam.

Speaking during a programme monitored on a national television, the All Progressives Congress lawmaker said: “There is no civil authority there and the only authority there is Boko Haram.

They are Gudumbali, Marte and Abadam.”

Ndume, called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on the nation’s security and economy sectors, lamenting that terrorists have “dislodged the Nigerian Army” in some areas in his constituency. While acknowledging efforts of the military, he called for improved welfare for the security personnel.

“Let the President forget about everything and concentrate on three things – security, welfare of citizens and economy,” he stated.

“His attention should go there as number one then he should create a state of emergency in those areas.” He also faulted Tinubu’s declaration of emergency in rule in Rivers State, saying as a democrat, the President ought not to have taken such step.

Oyetola, Ife Development Board

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola and the Ife Development Board have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Dr. AbdulRauf Adekunle Adeniji, fondly known as "Kongo", who was kidnapped and murdered by his captors in Abuja. In a condolence message personally signed by him, Oyetola, who is also the immediate past Governor of Osun State and the Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in

the state, described the late Adeniji as “a true progressive, an upright, loyal and committed party stalwart who served the APC and the people of Ife Central Local Government with unmatched dedication and sincerity.”

Oyetola recalled Adeniji’s years of service as a seasoned administrator and in the political landscape, highlighting his remarkable ability to blend humility with competence.

“This is a tragic and painful loss not only to his immediate family,

but to our party, our state, and the nation at large,” the minister said. Similarly, the Ife Development Board also expressed sadness over Adeniji’s demise.

According to a statement yesterday, like members of his family, friends and associates, the Ife community had hoped with silent prayers that “our dear compatriot would finally regain his freedom and return to us after his harrowing experience in the hands of his abductors. But

improvement, noting, “We have a top-notch system where patients can give us feedback, and if there’s any issue that needs improvement, we will work on it. The health and safety of our patients are key to us.” In terms of future plans, he acknowledged that while the facility is not yet equipped for cancer care, there are collaborations with oncology specialists and institutions such as Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). “In our own facility, we can do the CT scan to locate the spot of the virus in the body. This is supportive care for those who are the specialists,” he said.

“Our journey is far from over,” Oke said, noting that “This launch is not just a milestone—it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to delivering accessible, innovative, and quality healthcare for all.”

alas, we were only met with the truly devastating news of his death today. This indeed is a dark day in the annals of our community.” It added: “As a mark of respect and tribute to his remarkable contributions to the advancement of Ife, the Board has declared a three-day mourning period for this illustrious patriot, starting tomorrow. Consequently, the Board will suspend all activities and engagements during the period.

Cormart Expands Cold Storage Solutions to Tackle Food Wastage

Charles Ajunwa

Cormart Nigeria Limited, a supplier of chemical and food raw materials and a member of Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group, is transforming Nigeria’s cold chain infrastructure with the local production of high-quality sandwich panels. These innovative panels, designed for the construction of cold rooms, will play a crucial role in combating post-harvest losses and food preservation challenges across the country. Built with steel sheets and Polyurethane Foam (PU) cores for superior insulation, Cormart’s sandwich panels ensure optimal temperature control for perishable

goods such as agricultural produce, frozen foods, and pharmaceuticals.

This initiative aligns with national efforts to enhance food security and reduce Nigeria’s estimated 45 per cent agricultural produce loss due to inadequate storage.

According to the Executive Director of Cormart and Chi Farms Nigeria Limited, Dr. Johannes Flosbach, "The ability to store perishable goods efficiently is a critical turning point for Nigeria’s food security and economic growth," adding, “By producing high-quality sandwich panels locally, we are making the construction of cold storage more accessible, affordable, and tailored to the needs of businesses across agriculture, food processing, and pharmaceuticals.”

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, has empowered Abia youths under the Youth Agricultural Support Programme, saying that the future of agriculture belongs to the young generation.

Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, presented the support kits, including N12 million cheque to the 120 beneficiaries on behalf of the First Lady, at a ceremony in Umuahia, yesterday.

According to her, there was a need to encourage the young population to go into farming given the "profound impact that agriculture has on our daily lives."

"From the food on our tables to the clothes on our backs, agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and it is exciting to see our youth taking an interest in this sector," she said.

The training/empowerment programme was carried out under the Renewed Hope Initiative (ASP-RHI) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security(FMAFS)

Speaking to the media at the red carpet, RMD described Radio Voice as “the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. Killings: Middle Belt Group Calls for Deployment of More Security Forces to Plateau

Seriki Adinoyi in Jos

Leadership of Middle Belt Ethnic Nationalities has called on the federal government to deploy more security forces to Plateau State to curb the persistent attacks and killings in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Jos, Coordinator of the group, Professor Abraham Dogo said, “We call on the federal government to immediately

deploy more security forces to the affected areas, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators according to the law, and fulfill its constitutional duty to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians regardless of region, religion, or ethnicity.”

The group also called on the international community to come to the aid of the people of the state. “The United Nations, the African Union, ECOWAS, Amnesty International,

and other global institutions should take urgent interest in the worsening humanitarian crisis in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. The silence of the world in the face of targeted violence against indigenous communities is deafening. We need your voice. We need your action.”

While appreciating Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his proactive efforts so far, the Middle Belt group asked him to do more by engaging Agro Rangers to protect the farmers

from further attacks as the rainy season sets in.

“We appreciate the efforts of His Excellency Governor Barrister Caleb Mutfwang for the proactive measures taken to avert further attacks in the state and recommend that swift steps be taken to provide relief materials, shelter, and medical care to survivors, and to establish a task force that will prevent a recurrence of this tragedy.

Ibas Charges 23 Local Government Administrators on Financial Prudence

Bode George attacks Rivers sole administrator on appointments, women protest

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral, Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) has charged the newly appointed Administrators of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to be prudent in their financial dealings. Ibas, gave the charge yesterday when he had a meeting with the appointed administrators for the 23 LGAs in Port Harcourt.

However, ripples of the appointments continued yesterday, as a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, tackled Ibas, describing the appointments as illegal and potentially regrettable.

This was as hundreds of Women in Rivers State, yesterday, protested in the major streets of Port Harcourt, demanding restoration of democratic leadership in the State.

The women who were carrying placards in their black attires protested along the major Aba Road. They rejected the emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu, following a political crisis

between the Executive and Legislative arms of the State.

But during the meeting with the LGA administrators, Ibas charged them to prioritise the well-being of the people and work assiduously to ensure that the benefits of good governance in the promotion of trust, sustainable development and peace are felt adequately.

Barth Nnaji, Others Bemoan Nigeria’s Power Sector Challenges

Oluchi Chibuzor

He told them that he served Nigeria for over 40 years with an unblemished record of service in the military and diplomatic corps and was in retirement when the current appointment was made.

Ibas said he accepted the offer to serve Nigeria and indeed Rivers people from a conviction that the best must always be given to ensure progress and achievement of the great potentials so cherished.

Urge FG to be cautious in energy transition

Energy Stakeholders in the country have expressed concern over the country's inability to build new power plants in than 10 years, saying the country cannot progress if its energy stock is not growing year-on- year (YoY) compared with its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. They equally urged the federal government to ensure sustainable energy security for the people in its energy transition initiative.

Additionally, they called for the lifting of the suspension on the Guarantee Instrument for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to allow for more investors in the sector, just as they stressed that the current $4 per/day energy supply cannot encourage the industrialisation in economy aiming to hit $1 trillion in the next five years.

Speaking at the bullion lecture themed, ‘Architecting The Energy Sector For Nigeria's $1 Trillion Economy Vision’, the Founder and Chairman, Geometric Power Plant, Prof. Barth Nnaji, said the government has a role to play to improve investors' confidence in attracting the private sector players in the energy sector.

He questioned why in 10 years the country has not built new plants if it plans to have an energy sector that would support a $1 trillion economy.

He said the country must make a substantial investment in gas to encourage more thermal plants to boost generation up to 100, 000MW to become a higher medium economic power.

But he argued that such a level of power generation cannot be achieved without the lifting of the suspension of the PPAs to attract investors.

According to him, “During our time in government, I, in collaboration with then Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, had introduced Partial Risk Guaranty (PRG) through the World Bank as a way to incentivise and provide payment security for power plant development in Nigeria.

“Many companies started working fast to take advantage of this initiative. It was based on this initiative that significant projects like ExxonMobil (500MW); Oma Power (1080MW), etc. got developed to maturity. Unfortunately, the 461 Megawatt Azura-Edo Power Plant in Edo State is the only product of this initiative by the time President Jonathan left

office, the Buhari Government, which succeeded, did not continue with the MOUs and the PRG Instrument for the PPAs.

“So for more than 10 years, no new power plant has been built or initiated in Nigeria. The 188MW Geometric Power plant commissioned last year was conceived before this period and built without a need for a Guarantee instrument. We should never forget that for any country's economy to keep growing, it must keep growing its energy stock year-on-year.”

He advised that the country should aim for 100,000MW but expressed doubt if it could ever be achieved because of the suspension of the guarantee instrument for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) by the then President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.

He noted that as the Vice Chairman, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Musiliu Oseni, has argued eloquently, “without new PPAs, no new plants will be built,” he stated.

He revealed that the ExxonMobil Power plant, OMA Power by the JV of Geometric Power and General Electric

and others has been in abeyance because of the suspension of the PPAs.

“It is costly to build a plant approximately $1.5 million per MW. No investors will build any without at least a Partial Risk Guarantee (PRG). To achieve desired power adequacy of over 100000MW, the Nigerian government has a critical role to play,” he stated.

The former Minister of Power warned the country not to join huggers in the global energy transition process.

“We should recognise that natural gas is a transition fuel. Therefore, we should not be cowed to classify it as a classic fossil fuel to be extinguished immediately. This fuel is our energy ticket to sustainable economic development.

“The Nigerian Government(s) should employ the already tested approaches to collaborate with the private sector to quickly progress power availability to the level that matches our country's sustainable economic growth desire," he said.

He pointed out that in all the initiatives of energy transition no country undertakes the journey of carbon emission without considering sustainable energy security for its people.

US Engages Tinubu to Strengthen Regional Security Cooperation

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

The United States of America (USA) has held talks with President Bola Tinubu on the need to strengthen regional security cooperation as part of broader efforts to stabilise conflict zones in Africa and deepen economic partnerships across the continent.

President Tinubu and U.S. State Department Senior Advisor for Africa, had on Thursday met in Massad Boulos, Paris, where the Nigerian leader is currently on a short working visit.

According to a statement shared

yesterday by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, and reposted by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the discussions focused on security collaboration, particularly efforts to build lasting peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“State Department Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos met with President Tinubu on Thursday to discuss regional security, including working together with partners to build a durable peace in eastern

DRC,” the U.S. Mission stated.

The meeting also explored avenues for expanding economic cooperation between the United States and African nations, with an emphasis on Nigeria’s strategic role in continental development.

“They also discussed expanding opportunities for economic cooperation throughout Africa,” the U.S. statement added.

President Tinubu has been in Paris since Wednesday, April 2, on what his media office described as a short working visit, during which he is reviewing the progress of his

administration at midterm and setting strategic direction for the remaining two years of his tenure.

Thursday’s meeting with the U.S. Advisor underscores ongoing efforts to position Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s security architecture and economic transformation.

Details of the conversation have not been disclosed beyond the official statement, but diplomatic observers view the engagement as a significant gesture from Washington, highlighting Nigeria’s role in peace-building efforts and regional stability across West and Central Africa.

He said:" Since resuming this assignment, I have taken time to visit a few local government areas. Those visits have accorded me the opportunity to interact with local government civil servants, and it is clear that I needed help with administering the entire State, which I am responsible for following Mr. President's proclamation.

"And so I went about trying to identify a few individuals from which on the 7th of April 2025, I selected those seated here today as administrators of the 23 Local Government Areas."

Ibas urged them to focus on issues of sanitation and environment management, primary healthcare, welfare and discipline of local government civil servants, primary education, and youth engagement, which will be used to access their performances in the coming weeks.

"Your selection to the important office is not by chance but a recognition of your capacity to lead, your commitment to service, and the trust reposed in you to bring governance closer to the people.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P)

Joint Venture (JV) has offered N287 million grants to 12 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the country to support their initiatives aimed to create pathways for growth and development in the communities they serve.

The grants were given to the NGOs at the 2025 Impact FIRST Grant presentation held in Lagos, recently, according to a statement issued yesterday by FIRST E&P.

Through the Impact FIRST initiative, the NNPC/FIRST E&P JV provides financial support to NGOs that work towards addressing pressing societal issues in the areas of education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the event, the Lead, Community Relations at the NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), Mr. Loveday Minanengiyeofor,

"Therefore, you bear the sacred responsibility, a duty to ensure that affairs of your respective councils are managed with the utmost care, respect, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of our people," he added. Meanwhile, George, has cautioned the sole administrator over the appointments and the reconstitution of boards in the state, describing them as illegal and potentially regrettable. George issued the warning yesterday in a strongly worded statement, urging Ibas to respect the Constitution and the rule of law.

He criticised the administrator’s decision to appoint officials to oversee the 23 local government areas and restructure state boards, despite a standing court order prohibiting such actions. Justice Adamu Turaki Muhammed of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had previously barred Ibas from appointing sole administrators for the local councils. However, Ibas went ahead to make the appointments and reconstitute boards of agencies, commissions, and parastatals. Reacting to the development, George stated: “I want to warn Admiral Ibas: if you act against the spirit of the Constitution, you will be held responsible. Your appointment is for just six months. Even if the President extends it, you will still leave one day—because nobody elected you. Your position as Sole Administrator is not legally recognised.”

who represented the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NUIMS, Mr. Seyi Omotowa, commended the efforts of the beneficiary NGOs in inspiring hope and tackling societal challenges. According to Minanengiyeofor, NNPC Ltd is dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote social change.

"Through the Impact FIRST Grant, we are establishing partnerships with organisations that are making significant contributions to their communities. Our collaboration with FIRST E&P allows us to support projects aimed at improving lives and generating both economic and social benefits," he added.

In his remarks, Executive Director of Corporate Services at FIRST E&P, Mr. Emmanuel Etomi, emphasised the significance of partnerships in fostering development.

He said, "As an organisation, we have seen firsthand how meaningful change happens - not in isolation, but through collaboration. We recognise that NGOs play a vital role in addressing complex social challenges, particularly in communities that are often underserved.

Imo: Appointing 4th Most Senior Judge Acting CJ Will Destroy Judiciary, Democracy, Lawyers Tell NJC

Young legal practitioners under the platform of Lawyers for Civil Liberties, have warned of the dangers of allowing a situation where a junior judge is appointed as Acting Chief Judge or Chief Judge, above other senior judges.

The young lawyers pointed out that beyond the appointment being an aberration and against constitutional provisions, it will in the long run impact negatively on the judiciary and the country's democracy, since it would put judges under the mercies of politicians.

The Lawyers for Civil Liberties sounded the warning on yesterday in Abuja, while speaking with journalists on the recent appointment of the 4th most senior judge as the Acting Chief Judge of Imo State.

It would be recalled that the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, following the removal of immediate past CJ, Justice Theresa Chikeka, had appointed Justice T. N. Nzeukwu, Acting Chief Judge, against constitutional provisions.

Concerned about the development which many condemned, the young

lawyers have appealed to the National Judicial Council (NJC), the body responsible for the appointment and disciplining of judicial officers, to step in and save the judiciary from the whims and caprices of politicians, especially state governors.

National Coordinator of the Lawyers for Civil Liberties, Mr. Victor Opatola, who spoke on behalf of the young lawyers described the situation as "disturbing" and "frightening", lamenting that the breaches do not only happen, "but that they continue unchecked, as though the constitution provisions are mere inconvenience and not the supreme law."

According to him, Section 271(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, was very clear on the issue of appointment of a Chief Judge.

"It is a simple, clear rule—one meant to avoid confusion and ensure the impartial and independent continuity of the judiciary. The provisions of the Constitution are not a matter of preference. It is not a discretion. It is a command," he said.

Opatola recalled that the Imo State governor was guided by the said section in 2020, when he appointed

Ogbunike Stool Crisis: Court Halts Selection Process, Sets May 16 for Hearing

A High Court sitting in the Otuocha Judicial Division of Anambra State recently restrained elders of Ogbunike community in Oyi Local Government Council from taking further steps toward the selection or installation of a new traditional ruler, pending the hearing and determination of a suit brought before it. The interim order followed an ex parte motion filed by seven prominent community leaders — Chief Anene Osadebe (Akaeze Ogbunike), Chief Eric Anyaegbunam (Akajiani Ogbunike), Chief

Aniweta Onunkwo (Ichele Ogbunike), Chief Ogochukwu Onyekwuluje (Ekwueme Ogbunike), Chief Obiefuna Oduche (Ugogbuzue Ogbunike), Chief Oduche Okafor (Mmililienyi Ogbunike), and Chief Afam Okeke (Agunechemba Ogbunike) —suing on behalf of themselves, the Igwe-in-Council, and the people of Ogbunike.

The plaintiffs are seeking to restrain three respondents—Ichie Tochukwu Obiakor, Ichie Nwafor Onyezia, and Mr. Hyacinth Maduka Agudosi— from proceeding with the selection and screening of any aspirant to the Igweship stool.

They accused the respondents of unilaterally publishing a timetable for the selection process, in alleged violation of the community’s 1978 Constitution governing traditional leadership.

According to court filings, the defendants failed to comply with specific provisions of the constitution, particularly Part III, Section 9 (subsections 1–4) and Section 20 (subsections 1a and 3), which outline the procedure for electing a traditional ruler.

The plaintiffs argue that any process not grounded in the constitutional framework is null and void.

Justice Ijeoma Agugua as Acting Chief Judge of Imo State.

"She was the most senior judge at the time. That initial step respected both law and logic. When she was eventually removed, she was not succeeded by the next most senior judge, Justice C. A. Ononeze Madu, but by Justice Theresa Chikeka, her junior.

"This was no oversight. It was deliberate. And it violated both the Constitution and the time-honoured

protocol of seniority that anchors judicial stability," he said.

The National Coordinator, also recalled that the Action People's Party (APP) had petitioned the NJC, adding that despite public outrage then the NJC did nothing.

"Justice Chikeka served in that clouded position while under investigation for falsifying her age. When the NJC eventually recommended her removal, one might have hoped that constitutional

order would return. But it did not.

"Instead, another junior, Justice T. N. Nzeukwu, was recently appointed

Acting Chief Judge—once again over Justice Ijeoma Agugua (who was previously an Acting Chief Judge between 2020 -2021), Justice Ononeze Madu and Justice E.O Agada.

"The NJC issued a disclaimer. The Nigerian Bar Association in Owerri protested. But still, the appointment stood.

Tayo Adedeji-Phillips: Every Designer’s Goal is to Collaborate with Artists, Celebrities for Growth

Tayo Adedeji-Phillips, the Creative Director at Tayo Phillips Couture, is known for his blend of craftsmanship, inclusivity, and innovation in contemporary fashion. Though switching from the corporate world to fashion was tough, he tells Ferdinand Ekechukwu how the renowned designer, Adebayo Jones inspired him to turn a hobby into a full-time career. Excerpts:

Canyoutellussomethingabout yourbackground?

My name is Tayo AdedejiPhillips. I was born into a Christian family in Surulere, Lagos, and I am the second child in my family, with older sister and younger siblings. For my primary education, I attended UMC Primary School in Ibadan, followed by Jubril Martins Memorial High School in Iponri, Lagos. Later, I pursued my tertiary education in the United States, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and an MBA as my second degree.

Howwasgrowinguplike?

Growing up was awesome. I came from a very close-knit, relatively middle-class family—back when lifestyles and wages were moderately sufficient for most families in Nigeria.

Growing up, was there any trait that tilted towardsfashion?

This trait primarily came from my late mother and one of my uncles. They were highly fashionable, and I remember following my late uncle to Mandilas on Lagos Island for shopping. What amazed me most was when I accompanied him to Copperfield back in the day—he bought various outfits along with an expensive handkerchief. I can’t recall the exact amount he paid for it, but I was shocked that he would spend so much on just a handkerchief. At the time, he told me, “If you dress, you must dress completely—and a handkerchief shouldn’t be left out.”

Youhavemultipledegreesindifferentareas, spanningPsychologyandMarketing.Whatmade youpursuefashion?

Fashion was innate to me. My late mother would tell us as kids, “Even if you only have one or two outfits, wash them, iron them, and dress with cleanliness. The way you present yourself is how people will judge you.” That’s how I was raised. For decades, people praised my fashion sense and

The epic drama, ‘Labake Olododo’ presently screening in cinemas across the country has continued to grow traction and hooks on the lips of movie lovers. The intriguing epic which has become a box office hit since its release on Friday, March 28, 2024, has captivated audiences across Nigeria.

Starring Iyabo Ojo alongside musician cum actor, Alaba Onaolapo known as Alaba Ultimate, the title has continued to get rave reviews. One of the major talking points is Alaba’s unforgettable portrayal of Adigun that leaves an indelible mark—proving that the most fascinating characters are brought to life not by predictable storytelling, but by the depth and commitment the actor brings to the role.

As the formidable second-in-command to

urged me to pursue fashion, but I never considered it seriously—until a few years ago. An old Facebook friend, someone I’d never met, commented on my colorful socks and how I paired them with my outfit. He wrote, “Tayo, fashion is your calling. Don’t bury this talent.” That man was Adebayo Jones. It was as if God used him to reveal what had been hidden inside me—and what others had seen for years. Back then, friends in the U.S. would call me to help coordinate colors for their events or ask, “What shoes should I wear with this?”

Howdidyourloveforfashionevolvefroma hobbyintoafull-timecareer?

As I mentioned earlier, when the veil was removed, I began to see it as a vision—though it took me a few months to decide what to do next. My challenge was that I was trained as a banker, and as an MBA holder, my primary goal was to grow and lead a company. Transitioning into fashion was difficult for me. At the time of the unveiling, I was still working at a small engineering firm I had co-founded. After several discussions with Adebayo Jones, I eventually went to London and met him at his massive studio in Kilburn. He taught me the fundamentals of fashion, breaking down its complexities and simplifying the process in a way I could easily understand.

How did you get the necessary training for yourprofession?

Before I went to the UK to meet Adebayo Jones, I already had a local but talented tailor who usually made my outfits. We often collaborated on complex designs, among other things. Later, I decided to train formally in his shop. Even before that, I had spent intermittent time there—sometimes just for leisure—observing how the business was run. When I finally saw my vision clearly, I told myself I had to work harder to bring it to life. So, I dedicated two to three days a week to working with him for about a year, which really helped solidify my path forward. Fortunately, my background in drawing made it easier to grasp the basics of fashion. Whenever an idea came to mind, I would quickly sketch it on

industry, I was already deeply immersed in it—both in thought and creative process—as if I were already a designer.

What are the major challenges you had to overcometobecomethedesigneryouaretoday?

Funding remains a major challenge. Without your planned objectives. Another key factor is business location. Designers in Lekki may attract more sales than those on the Mainland, but this doesn’t mean Mainland designers are less skilled. What truly matters is professionalism and sincerity of purpose. If funding limits your ability to secure an ideal location, start with what you have and work harder. With persistence, you can grow and eventually secure a better space.

Which year did you launch your label Tayo PhillipsCoutureandhowhasthereceptionbeen? I started in 2016, but I consider that period a preparation for the next level of challenge. It wasn’t until late 2017 that I finally began to see light at the end of the tunnel. Friends and family would say, “Didn’t we tell you?” They’d remind me, “This is what you should have been doing all along—fashion is you, Tayo.”

As a visionary fashion designer, my work over the past eight years has been defined by a relentless pursuit of innovation and storytelling through design.

As Ogun Prepares to Host National Sports Festival

In just a matter of days, all roads will lead to the Gateway State for the 26th edition of the iconic National Sports Festival (NSF).

The festival, a celebration of Nigeria’s rich sports and cultural heritage, is billed to feature athletes competing in 33 sporting events and is bound to be Nigeria’s best so far given the huge investments that the Ogun State Government has made into it. A visit to the facilities, state-of-the-art in every sense, will confirm the readiness of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration to give Nigerians a fiesta to remember, a tournament like no other, and a moment of magic.

The 22nd NSF is set to kick off, and excitement is in the air in the Gateway State. Speaking during an assessment of the work done on the facilities being prepared for the festival, including the stadium, the Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, and the handball court behind the main bowl, as well as the Alake Sports Centre, all in Abeokuta, last week, Governor Abiodun hinted that they will not only be used for the upcoming festival but also other competitions, national and international.

As he noted, the Gateway International Stadium, which is being renovated in preparation for the NSF, has already been selected by the African Athletics Federation to host the Under-20 athletics competition in 2026, which is why the stadium will no longer be available for non-sporting events in the state once it receives the finishing touches for the NSF.

There is, of course, a silver lining for owanbe (party) lovers and fun seekers who may feel short-changed by this decision: the government is constructing a pavilion behind the stadium to cater to non-sporting events.

Sports, the Governor seems to be saying, is big business and the Gateway State is poised to treat it as such, in line with global thinking. That is why the newly laid tracks, including the long distance tracks, long jump track, tennis court, basketball court, handball court and squash hall at the mainbowl and the Alake Sports Centre, including the multipurpose hall, are such a beauty to behold. Go to the mainbowl of the MKO Abiola Stadium and behold the synthetic grass: it’s simply breathtaking.

Hear an excited Governor Abiodun: “The track that we installed here has already begun to reap benefits. The African Athletics Federation, because of the quality of our tracks, has chosen Ogun State to host the athletics competition in 2026 for the Under-20. So, you find that based on what we have done, Ogun State will now become home to other world-class competitions across the country, across Sub-Saharan Africa, and even internationally.

“For us, we are already excited that this investment has begun to yield dividends. This will be one of the legacies of our administration. Let me assure you that the stadium will only be used for sporting activities. To that extent, we’ve chosen to construct a pavilion somewhere behind the stadium, and that pavilion will now be used for rallies, parties, march pasts, October 1 celebrations, Labour Day celebrations, community days, and Democracy Day. “Our MKO AbiolaInternational Stadium has now gone beyond being just an MKO Abiola International Stadium; it is now an MKO AbiolaSporting Complex.”

With no less than 15,000 people billed to attend the NSF, the Abiodun government has been busy re-engineering the entire Ogun landscape. Among other things, it is giving the OlumoRock Tourist Center and other adjoining tourist centers a massive facelift to give visitors an unbeatable experience as the festival goes underway.

The Governor articulates his vision so masterfully: “The festival itself will allow us to host maybe 15,000 people in the city of Abeokuta. You can imagine that those people will be eating and drinking; they will be transported back and forth. They will be buying recharge cards and water. They will be visiting our tourist sites.

“We are getting Olumo Rock and other adjoining tourist centers ready for the games. There will be a lot of visitors sleeping in hotels. The economic impact of this festival on the economy of this state can best be imagined; the multiplier effect will be felt more after the games.”

As an aside, the Ogun helmsman is engineering moves to make the Gateway State to get a fat slice of this year’s DettyDecember visits by Nigerians in the disapora, taking advantage of the state’s proximity to Lagos.

In any case, ahead of the NSF, Ogun State is partnering the arts and culture company, Terra Kulture, to establish a film and entertainment village in the state. As Governor Abiodun posited, the film village will help the state to preserve the legacies of those who have pioneered and excelled in the fields of music, film, drama, and entertainment.

Governor Abiodun made this known when he received the Chief Executive Officer of Terra Kulture, Bolanle Austen Peters, in his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta.

His words: “From the onset of our administration, we always wanted to have some sort of creative arts and entertainment zone, but when we assumed office, the government was laden with so many priorities.

“We wanted to ensure that we first paid attention to matters that touch the lives of the people directly. Because it is only when you are comfortable and happy that you will begin to

think of relaxing and being entertained; we had to do that. We are confident that we have not just accomplished that; we’ve made the most of it, and our focus in the last year has been how to push the frontier in the areas of culture, music, and entertainment.”

Only an ignoramus will doubt the view that the NSF creates an opportunity for new talents to be discovered for both national and international sporting meets. It cannot but be cheering news that what the Abiodun administration has done with the investment in sporting facilities in the state is second to none. Indeed, in choosing Ogun as the 2024 NSF host, the federal government took ample notice of the massive infrastructure upgrade across the state, and it is no coincidence that Bukola Olopade, the man that the Ogun State Government chose as the chair of the festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC ), has just been appointed as the chairman of the National Sports Department Agency. He will certainly bring his wealth of experience to bear on the assignment and help Ogun make history as it hosts the NSF. The Ogun State government, as attested to by many, has created an enabling environment for business, and investors are moving into the state in droves, buoyed by the deeply enhanced infrastructure outlay. A visit to the state will show that the government is indeed upgrading structures to attract tourists and give visitors a wow experience. No doubt, Ogun 2025 will expose state talents that will represent Nigeria, promote unity, and ensure brisk business for hoteliers, food entrepreneurs, and dealers in clothing fabric, among others. Visit Ogun for the NSF and have a fun-filled moment.

Transforming Education: Enugu’s Disruptive Model

Imagine a future where every child, regardless of background, has access to a world-class education—one that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and technical expertise from an early age. Picture classrooms equipped with digital whiteboards, students engaging with Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and an education system seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology with practical skills. This is not a distant dream but a tangible reality taking shape in Enugu State, Nigeria.

Nigeria’s education sector has faced persistent challenges for decades—insufficient funding, outdated curricula, and a disconnection from modern technological advancements. These limitations have stifled progress, leaving generations of students ill-equipped for the rapidly evolving global economy. However, a radical transformation is underway in Enugu, led by Governor Peter Mbah’s visionary leadership. The goal is clear: to position Enugu as Africa’s leading hub for human capabilities, producing a generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers who will drive economic and technological progress.

This transformation is anchored on three strategic pillars—experiential and future-oriented learning, inclusive and equitable education, and strengthening technical, vocational, and higher education. By reimagining the role of education and making unprecedented investments in learning infrastructure and curriculum development, Enugu is pioneering a model that other states and nations can emulate. In this new era, education is not just about acquiring knowledge but about building competencies that empower students to thrive in a dynamic world.

Traditional Nigerian education has relied heavily on rote memorisation, leaving students ill-prepared for the demands of an evolving world. Enugu State is shifting towards Experiential Learning, where students gain knowledge through practical applications rather than passive listening.

To achieve this, the state will integrate cutting-edge technologies into the curriculum: Interactive Digital Whiteboards and Tablets to create engaging, interactive lessons; Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics to teach problem-solving and innovation; Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) to provide immersive learning experiences; and the Internet of Things (IoT) to introduce students to smart technologies.

A 2023 report by the World Economic Forum states that “65% of children entering primary school today will work in job roles that do not yet exist.” Enugu’s forward-thinking approach ensures that its students will not only be ready for these jobs but will pioneer them.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is at the heart of this reform, ensuring that students are not just consumers of technology but creators, innovators, and future leaders in the global digital economy. In the words of Governor Mbah, “Our children will not just use technology; they will build it, shape it, and lead the world with it.” A key component of this transformation is ensuring that every child in Enugu State has access to quality education, regardless of socio-economic background.

The government addresses this challenge by constructing 260 Smart Green Schools, one in each ward, to ensure widespread access to modern education facilities. The Smart Green Schools project is a radical rethinking of primary and secondary education in Enugu. Each school will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including interactive classrooms, digital labs, AI-driven learning tools, and a curriculum designed for the 21st century, focusing on skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and technological proficiency. The pilot school in Owo, Nkanu East LGA, is already operational, with many more under construction. The government has committed to completing all 260 schools by September 2025.

The government is introducing Early Childhood Education (ECE), which focuses on social skills, cognitive development,

and problem-solving from as early as three years old, provides special accommodations for children with disabilities, and ensures inclusivity. This initiative will ensure that every child receives a world-class education from age three onwards, preparing them for success in an increasingly technology-driven world. According to a McKinsey report on education, “Students who engage in digital and experiential learning from an early age show a 45% improvement in problem-solving skills compared to traditional methods.”

These measures ensure that education in Enugu is not just a privilege but a right, setting a precedent for other states. A 2022 UNICEF report states, “Nigeria has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in the world, with over 10.5 million not receiving formal education.” Enugu’s investment aims to change this narrative, ensuring no child is left behind, especially in Enugu.

A significant flaw in Nigeria’s education system is that it is disconnected from industry needs. Many graduates are unemployed due to a mismatch between their skills and market demands. Enugu’s model seeks to bridge this gap by prioritising Science, Technical, and Vocational Education (STVE). Many students will transition to STVE institutions after graduation from Smart Green Schools. Eight new Technical and Vocational Schools (one per Federal Constituency) are under construction, ensuring that students interested in practical skills training have access to top-tier facilities. The Government Technical College (GTC), Enugu, is being revitalised as the flagship institution for technical education. Other key initiatives include building eight specialised STVE schools, one per Federal Constituency, offering training in fields such as Industrial Technology & Engineering, Software Development & Information Technology, Building & Fabrication Engineering, and Industrial Agriculture. Upgrading tertiary institutions to incorporate experiential learning methodologies, including Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT). Ensuring ESUT’s programmes are accredited, with 97% of courses now officially recognised, thanks to increased government investment. Clearing salary arrears and releasing long-stalled promotions, motivating educators to deliver higher-quality instruction.

These technical institutions will not just train students but forge direct partnerships with industries, ensuring that graduates are ready to enter the workforce immediately upon completing their programmes. By focusing on skills that are in high demand, Enugu is reducing unemployment and creating a pipeline of skilled workers who can compete

Terra Arts Academy Celebrates Creative Transformations at Graduation Ceremony

The Terra Academy for The Arts (TAFTA) held its annual graduation ceremony yesterday in Lagos.

The Academy, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, graduated over 8,000 students at the colourful event, which marked the third Graduating Ceremony of the institution.

With the theme “Celebrating Creative Transformation,” the ceremony highlights the significant artistic growth of TAFTA’s students.

The students spanned TAFTA centres in Lagos, Ogun, and Kano States. The cohorts of students beamed with smiles for the remarkable feat achieved reflecting commitment, dedication, passion and hard work.

As a social transformation project conceived by Bolanle Austen-Peters in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, TAFTA addresses critical expertise gaps and gender imbalances in Nigeria’s creative sectors, particularly in technical areas like stage lighting, sound design, and animation, where young women are now excelling.

Notably, TAFTA’s impactful programmes have up-skilled and empowered more than

30,000 young people through technical training, practical workshops, mentorship, business registration and enterprise support, with an impressive 19,000 securing employment, gigs, and other opportunities within the creative industry so far.

The graduation ceremony featured a procession, a keynote address by Ms. Rosy Fynn, Country Director of the Mastercard Foundation in Nigeria, social media content, award of certificates, among others.

She noted that “at the Mastercard Foundations we can have great ideas and great dreams. But it takes an amazing partner to bring that to life and that’s what TAFTA has done with us under the leadership of Austen-Peters. And to the graduating class of 2025 and to celebrate your talent today and also your transformation, you know the theme of this graduation is perfect.

“It resonates deeply with me and as I look around this room filled with emerging scriptwriters, filmmakers, animators, sound designers, stage managers and so much more, I see not just individuals with talents but young people who can make real significant change.” A notable figure in the industry Bimbo Manuel offered to mentor the participants.

globally.

According to a recent National Bureau of Statistics study, Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate stood at 42.5% in 2023. Enugu’s focus on vocational training is expected to significantly reduce this figure, as skilled graduates will be job-ready upon completion of their programmes. Through initiatives such as industrial attachments and collaborative research with industry players, students will graduate with practical experience and marketable skills, significantly enhancing their employability.

Perhaps the most groundbreaking aspect of this transformation is the unparalleled financial commitment by the Enugu State Government. In 2024, the administration allocated N134.9 billion to education, 33% of the total budget, surpassing the UNESCO benchmark of 15-20%. This trend continued in 2025, with education receiving N320.6 billion (33.2% of the budget), making it one of the highest investments in education in Africa’s recent history.

This financial commitment extends beyond mere infrastructure; it ensures teachers receive competitive salaries, training, and incentives to deliver world-class education. Additionally, bursaries and scholarships are provided to high-achieving students and those from underprivileged backgrounds, removing financial barriers to education.

The significance of this is obvious. Education funding in Nigeria has been lip service for decades, with insufficient allocations hampering development. By making education the top budgetary priority, Governor Mbah is proving that transformational change is not just a vision but a well-funded reality. Enugu is fostering a generation of self-reliant, employable graduates capable of driving industrial and technological advancement by prioritising practical skills development. This commitment has not gone unnoticed. The Vanguard Newspaper’s editorial board, in its December 21, 2023 edition, acknowledged Enugu’s revolutionary approach in an article titled “Enugu’s Laudable Education Budget and Abia’s Recurrent Expenditure.” This recognition highlights the national and continental significance of the state’s educational reforms.

Enugu’s Disruptive Education Model is more than just a policy—it is a revolution in the making. If these ambitious initiatives are sustained and expanded, the state will serve as a benchmark for educational transformation across the continent. With an unwavering focus on experiential learning, inclusive access, and technical education, Enugu sets a new standard for what African education can and should be. The world is watching, and Enugu is leading the way.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fair distribution of appointments in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the health sector.

In a letter to Tinubu, the PSN expressed concerns that the lopsided appointment in favour of physicians was detrimental to other healthcare professions in the country.

PSN President, Ayuba Ibrahim Tanko in the document noted with concern that, “almost all the appointments in the health sector which is multidisciplinary in orientation and nature have gone to only one profession (Medicine).’’

He said the observation becomes very valid against the background of the specific mandate given the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Mohammed Pate after his appointment, which dwelt extensively in building and harmonising a sustainable healthcare workforce.

Ayuba said a random review of the appointments would confirm the observation of PSN. According to him, virtually all levels of appointment in the health sector are in favour of the physicians, even in

such areas that would require non-medical professionals - this showcases the dilemma confronting other health professionals in the sector.

To buttress the discriminating pattern in the appointments, the PSN cited a few examples including the two Ministers in-charge of the Federal Ministry of Health (Physicians), four other ministers in charge of different ministries who are members of FEC (Physicians), Special Adviser, Health (Physician), the National Coordinator, The Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, PVAC (Physician) and all CEOs of the 73 Federal Health Institutions (Physicians).

He also listed CEOs of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA), National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), National Commission for Disease Control (NCDC) - All Physicians; Chairman, NAFDAC, NHIA and over 90% of MDAS that have been constituted are all physicians. Similarly, all Vice Chancellors of the Universities of Health Sciences in Nigeria are Physicians.

As Abuja Continental Transforms to Desired Destination for Tourists

The hospitality business in Nigeria is growing in leaps and bounds, thanks to continuous patronage from clients. Abuja Continental Hotel, situated at the centre of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is poised to meet every guest’s needs.

In 2023, NIPCO Plc, through its subsidiary, 22 Hospitality Ltd, acquired Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, now Abuja Continental Hotel. The new investors embarked on an upgrade of facilities to bring the hotel to international standards and make it a desired destination for tourists from within and outside the country.

To showcase the ongoing transformation, selected journalists were invited by the hotel’s top management led by the Group General Manager, Karl Hala, and General Manager, Abuja, Kevin Brett, for a two-day familiarisation tour of the Abuja Continental.

When it was approaching time to board, the airline officials beckoned passengers to proceed to the Boeing 737-800 slated for the trip to Abuja. With all passengers on board the aircraft, the male crew closed the door and shortly after a female voice announced some of the rules to be adhered to by all passengers. The take off was smooth and immediately the aircraft cruised to altitude of 40,000 feet above sea level the pilot announced that seat belts can be removed or left in place as the case may be.

The plane touched down smoothly and passengers disembarked. I later joined my colleagues in a white Coaster bus provided by Abuja Continental. It took us 40 minutes from the airport to arrive at the hotel, blending nature with sophistication; displaying a tradition of warmth and impeccable service. A male steward was already on the ground to receive us. We exchanged pleasantries and he took our luggage for security checks at the entrance. At the front desk, we were quickly attended to and our room keys given to us. A beautiful artwork in mosaic design was embossed on the wall behind the front desk. The lobby looked welcoming and

attractive with the seats, flower pots and giant piano arrangement. And the transparent view from the lobby gives guests that sense of safety. There is also a Lobby Bar at the ground floor for guests to cool off.

A staff of the hotel was stationed close to the lifts on the ground floor apparently for security purposes. As I alighted on the 7th floor, the steward took me straight to Room 711, opened it and politely ushered me inside.

After turning on the light and arranging my luggage properly, I picked up a white card on the table signed by the hotel’s General Manager, Brett. It read: “Mr. Charles Ajunwa, it’s a pleasure to welcome you to Abuja Continental.”

Inside the room is a large family-size bed with wall bedding lights and standing lamps at both ends. Beside the bed, is a telephone for room services. Tea, coffee, Lipton, and sugar were neatly placed on the table with an electric kettle. Printed hotel menu and drinks also placed on the table.

On the table, is a reading light and flower pot of different colours. There is a table fridge in one of the cupboards under the table. A waste bin was kept at the corner. A big plasma television set and a round mirror hung on the wall. The room floor has a rug while from the wardrobe to the bathroom are all tiles. Inside the wardrobe are pressing iron, a safe and hangers. Internet connectivity and cooling systems work perfectly well. From the balcony, especially at night the beautiful landscape of Abuja resonates, showing architectural works. Also from the balcony, the Ladi Kwali Conference Centre, pool bar, car parks, entrance gate and lush green environment were sights to behold.

When it was dinner at 7:30p.m., we divided ourselves into two. The Christians had theirs at Obudu Grill Restaurant while Muslims had theirs at the Iftar conference hall. At both points, different dishes were served from native to continental. Goat and fish pepper soups were also available including assorted fruits. From there, we went back to our rooms to rest before the next event.

At 10p.m. we gathered at the pool bar, venue for a live band by Chunky Fingers, who entertained guests with melodious old school songs. Our guide, Nanji, ensured we relaxed well before retiring to our rooms for the next day’s itinerary.

As early as 6:30a.m. Saturday, we all gathered at the lobby from where we embarked on tour of Abuja Continental transformation. Our tour guide, Nanji, first took us to the newly renovated Ladi Kwali Conference Centre, which can accommodate over 3,000 guests. The old red rugs have been replaced with tiles, and toilets renovated to international standard. Presidential, ministerial and foreign missions’ retreats, meetings, conferences and excursions take place regularly due to the upgrade and renovation. The meeting venue, according to Nanji, comes with the following complimentary items: high speed WIFI access for all participants, notepad, pen/pencil for each delegate, a bottle of water per delegate, mints, state-of-art public address system and microphones, projector and screen, table and chairs with preferred set up, all meeting rooms

are air conditioned and uninterrupted power supply.

We visited a newly renovated conference hall which used to be a casino. Muslims now do Iftar after observing their daily Ramadan prayer. The venue can accommodate 150-200 guests. Nanji said the idea is to give their Muslim guests and those from outside the opportunity to gather together in a friendly and conducive environment to do Iftar. Food, water, fruits, and drinks are paid for.

From there, we moved to the Coconut Garden. According to Nanji, this breathtaking space hosts things like birthdays, anniversary, product launch or reception by companies. After it is the newly opened Ladi Kwali Sports Village which offers a wide range of exciting sporting activities for guests. According to Nanji, sports lovers always come to play at the paddle and pickleball courts, lawn tennis courts, football court pitch, table tennis, basketball and volleyball courts including squash courts to keep fit.

As Radda Attracts Envoys to Katsina Sallah Fiestas

Under the blazing sun of northern Nigeria, hooves thunder against the earth as thousands of horsemen, clad in vibrant robes and turbans, parade through Katsina and Daura ancient streets. The air thrums with the beat of kalangu, algaita drums and the cheers of crowds gathered to witness a spectacle not seen in decades: the full glory of Hawan Sallah, a cultural jewel nearly lost to time.

This year, however, the festival carried more than just local significance. Ambassadors from 10 nations—Bulgaria, Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Mexico, and beyond—stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Katsina’s elders, traditional rulers and government functionaries, their presence a powerful rebuttal to critics who once labeled the state “unsafe.”

For Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, the moment symbolised a dual triumph: the revival of Katsina’s heritage and the restoration of its global reputation as a Home of Hospitality.

Hawan Sallah, a post-Eid procession dating to the 14th century in Katsina Kingdom, once drew visitors from across West Africa and beyond. By the 2010s, however, economic hardship and insecurity had reduced it to a skeletal event. “My grandparents spoke of its grandeur, but I’d never seen it,” lamented 28-year-old local artisan Aisha Usman.

Gov. Radda is a traditional title holder in the legendary Katsina Emirate. As the Gwagwaren Katsina. He made the revival of cultural heritage a cornerstone of his 2023 campaign. Collaborating with royal custodians like the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, and the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umari Faruk, the administration rebuilt the event piece by piece. Artisans were commissioned to recreate intricate regalia; horsemen from rural communities trained for months; and media campaigns reignited public

interest.

Having said that, the 2024 Hawan Sallah stunned skeptics, drawing no less than 50,000 sons and daughters of Katsina both at home and in the diaspora. But 2025 marked a historic leap: 10 ambassadors, including the EU’s Gautier Mignot and Mexico’s Juan Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, among other tourism experts and investors arrived to witness the spectacle.

“This isn’t just a festival—it’s diplomacy in motion,” said Belgian Ambassador Pieter Leenknegt.

The ambassadors’ presence answered a lingering question: How could a state once plagued by insecurity host such an event? Critics had pointed to media reports questioning Katsina’s safety, but Governor Radda countered, “No nation risks its envoys lightly. Their trust in us speaks louder than headlines.”

In Katsina, our excitement knew no boundary to have hosted such a historic event.

Community-led security initiatives played a key role in this regard. The C-Watch, originally formed to protect villages, now partner with police to safeguard cultural sites. At this year’s festival, security drones buzzed overhead while children waved the Nigeria flags—a stark contrast to past anxieties.

“Fear ruled us before,” admitted farmer Musa Ibrahim from Funtua. “Now, seeing foreigners celebrate with us? It heals.”

Another thrilling experience at the recent Sallah fiestas is the economic ripple effect. Artisans like Usman Baba, who crafts traditional kola drums, report a 300 percent surge in demand. “Before, I sold maybe two drums a month. Now, orders come from the nooks and crannies of Katsina, even Europe,” he said.

Hotels in Katsina City recorded high occupancy, while food vendors near the Emir’s palace and the old government House earned a month’s income in just two days.

At the Katsina Equestrian Training Center, 19-year-old Hassan Sani—once unemployed—now teaches horseback artistry. “My grandfather was a horseman. Now I’m paid to keep his legacy alive,” he grinned.

According to the government’s guided mouths, tourism revenue has injected over N500 million into the state the second quarter of 2023 and now, with projections doubling next year. I was reliably intimated that plans are underway to expand the festival into a week-long cultural expo featuring craft fairs and academic panels.Back to Daura, Hawan Magajiya, where history meets the future. Daura is Nigeria’s oldest emirate, Governor Radda doubled down on cultural preservation at the Hawan Magajiya fiesta. Before ambassadors and 22 district heads, he pledged to “defend the dignity of our emirates” while wooing investors to Katsina’s agribusiness, commerce and education sectors.

The Emir of Katsina , HRH Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman at the Hawan Bariki praised Radda

infrastructural strides. Notably, the Katsina-Dutsinma Road and Kofar Kaura Roundabout. “Leadership isn’t blueprints—it’s the laughter of children biking safely,” the Emir remarked. Moving forward, the festival’s success has drawn international interest. Finland’s Ambassador Sandra Selin called the events “a masterclass in cultural storytelling,” while Bulgaria’s Yanko Yordanov noted, “Katsina’s hospitality rivals its heritage.” UNESCO is now considering designating Hawan Sallah as an Intangible Cultural Heritage—a move that could unlock global funding in the years to come. Gov. Radda, however, remains focused on sustainability. “Climate change threatens open-air events like ours,” he admitted. “But our ancestors adapted to harsh lands; so will we.”

Katsina’s story transcends tradition—it’s a lesson in resilience. By reviving Hawan Sallah, Governor Radda didn’t just resurrect a festival; he rekindled communal pride, spurred economic growth, and rebuilt international trust.

As the EU’s Mignot observed, “Culture isn’t a relic here. It’s the heartbeat of progress.”

For Katsina’s youth, the impact is visceral. At this year’s procession, 10-year-old Fatima Suleiman sat atop her father’s shoulders, eyes wide as horsemen paraded past. “I want to ride like that someday,” she whispered. In a state once overshadowed by strife, her words echo a renewed hope: that heritage, when honoured, can gallop boldly into the future.

The Hawan Bariki and Hawan Magajiya fiestas in Katsina and Daura respectively spurred excitement and thrilling moments with the historic participation of 10 global envoys, over 50,000 attendees and tourism experts from within and outside Katsina and Nigeria. Without iota of doubt, Katsina’s cultural heritage is getting a new shape under Governor Radda, whom lovers and admirers of progress and development regard as the future builder.

Appraising Osidi’s Leadership

Over the past year, Shehu Usman Osidi’s leadership at the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) has been marked by a clear vision, strategic innovation, and significant achievements.

These efforts have improved the Bank’s operations, expanded its reach, and strengthened its impact on the housing sector.

Key areas of focus included delivering essential housing projects, enhancing access to mortgage financing, expanding the National Housing Fund (NHF) Scheme, and driving digital transformation to improve service delivery. These initiatives have led to substantial institutional reforms and increased homeownership opportunities, ultimately shaping the future of mortgage banking and affordable housing delivery in Nigeria.

Increased Operational Perfor- mance/Financial Impact

It is instructive to note that the overarching objective of the Bank is the provision of Mortgage loans to Nigerians to buy or build houses. Over the past year, the Bank has lived up to expectations within its capacity, if current records are anything to go by. Within the period, the Bank recorded an operational surplus of N11.58 billion based on the Management Accounts for 2024. This is the first such experience since FMBN came into existence over 30 years ago.

compared to 556 and 113,577 respectively in 2023.

New Products Development

Over the last year of Shehu Osidi as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of FMBN, some new products came to being. This was in line with its mandate of providing innovative housing solutions to Nigerians.

Rent Assistance Loan, a micro-housing loan product meticulously designed to alleviate the financial burden of rental payments for eligible Nigerians.

This product was crafted to ensure accessibility, affordability and flexibility, making it a viable solution for many who have found it challenging to secure housing finance through other traditional financial arrangements. It is also expected to be launched within the first quarter of 2025.

Additionally, the FMBN under Shehu Osidi’s leadership has introduced the NonInterest Loan, also at the verge of being launched within quarter 1 of 2025. This product is specifically designed for Nigerians who are averse to interest payment, particularly Nigerians of low and middle-income status.

Improved Service Delivery

The FMBN has made significant strides in improving its service delivery over the past year. Under the leadership of Osidi, the Bank has prioritised efficiency and customer satisfaction, leading to notable achievements in turnaround time and loan approvals.

One of the most notable achievements has been the reduction in turnaround time for loan approvals and disbursements, which has been cut down to an average of 30 days.

The Bank’s digitisation efforts have played a crucial role in streamlining its processes.

stakeholders in the housing and financial sectors, including state governments, labour unions, real estate stakeholders, and international housing finance institutions.

These partnerships aim to expand the Bank’s network, leverage multilateral resources, and attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) into the Nigerian mortgage market.

One notable partnership is with Shelter Afrique Development Bank, which focuses on developing affordable housing for student populations across Nigeria.

The Bank is also exploring partnerships with organisations like the International Union of Housing Finance, Association of African Development Finance Institutions, and African Alliance for Youth Empowerment.

These collaborations have opened up new avenues for funding and technical support, enabling the Bank to expand its operations and deliver on its mandate more effectively.

The FMBN’s partnership initiatives have yielded significant results, including the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Kano State Government to re-integrate Kano State civil servants into the NHF Scheme.

Although this figure is expected to come down significantly when impairment is applied, the bank has set out to tackle all aspects of its operations that lead to high impairments, especially in tackling the high non-performing loans inherited by the current Management, and pursuing with great efforts the recapitalization of the bank.

A grossly inadequate capital of N2.5 billion hinders the capacity of the Bank to perform optimally.

Under the National Housing Fund (NHF) operations, collections grew by N3 billion in 2024, resulting in a total collection of N103 billion compared to the N100 billion the Bank recorded in 2023. This increase in NHF contributions demonstrates renewed trust and participation in the NHF scheme by Nigerian workers.

To further illustrate the improvements, a total of 658 employer organisations and 178,619 employees were registered in 2024

The newly introduced products include the Diaspora Mortgage Loan, Rent Assistance Loan and the Non-Interest Loan. These initiatives were all designed to cater to the diverse needs of Nigerians and expand access to affordable housing.

The Diaspora Mortgage Loan is a strategic collaborative initiative between FMBN and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). This initiative is expected to open up opportunities for Nigerians living abroad to invest in real estate back home in Nigeria.

Also, there are ongoing engagements between the Bank, NiDCOM and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) aimed at ensuring seamless transaction processes.

International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) are also being engaged to facilitate smooth transactions, with plans for a full rollout of the product expected in Q1 2025.

The NHF Diaspora Mortgage Loan Scheme is expected to further expand the scope of mortgage accessibility, driving down the housing deficit facing the county.

Another product recently introduced is the

The deployment of digital platforms like the Core Banking Application has significantly reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks, allowing loan applications to be processed online and ensuring faster and more transparent service delivery. This shift to digital platforms has also enhanced the Bank’s ability to monitor and evaluate its operations, leading to better decision-making and resource allocation.

In addition to digitisation, the Bank has introduced ‘mystery shopping’ as a strategic tool to improve customer service delivery and enhance customer experience and satisfaction.

This has brought about more effective and efficient responsiveness to inquiries and complaints, ensuring that customers’ needs are met promptly. As a result, customer satisfaction ratings have improved over the past year.

Strategic Partnerships and Col- laborations

The bank has also made significant strides in strategic partnerships and collaborations over the past year. Recognising the importance of collaboration in achieving its goals, the FMBN has forged partnerships with key

Road to Animal Farm

In 1945, British writer George Orwell published Animal Farm, an allegorical masterpiece that received widespread acclaim for its thoughtful examination of unchecked power, the erosion of ideals, and the betrayal of principles. This book became a staple of the high school curriculum for my generation in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The story unfolds on a farm where a group of animals, yearning for freedom and equality, rise up against their human owner, Mr. Jones. They chase him away and declare their independence. The pigs, deemed the most intelligent among them, assume leadership and establish a set of guiding principles—the Seven Commandments. But as the pigs tighten their grip on power, the commandments are gradually altered to serve their interests. The most striking revision comes when the original declaration, “All animals are equal,” is transformed into, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” In time, the animals find themselves living under a regime more oppressive than the one they overthrew.

The themes explored in Animal Farm remain startlingly relevant today, especially in light of current events in our nation.

The constitution of Nigeria, our guiding document and the foundation of our democratic existence, promises good governance and guarantees freedom, equality, and justice. Yet, its ability to shield citizens from those determined to subvert its intent appears increasingly fragile. The three branches of government—meant to uphold the principle of checks and balances—now seem aligned in a shared resolve to deny

citizens protection from abuses of power. Even the National Assembly, the emblem of our democracy, appears complicit in the erosion of democratic norms . What other explanation can justify the use of a voice vote to decide a matter that, by constitutional requirement, demands a two-thirds majority?

Recent developments in the Treasure Base of the Nation only deepen these concerns. The Supreme Court’s decision to deprive Rivers State of its statutory allocations—citing improperly appropriated expenditures—raises critical questions about federalism in Nigeria. More troubling is the appointment of a Sole Administrator, who now has access to the state’s funds. This not only seems incongruous , but also lends weight to the general perception in the state of a larger conspiracy to further undermine democratically established governance in the state.

Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution clearly outlines the process for declaring a state of emergency. However, the suspension of the elected state governor and House of Assembly represents an anomaly in a federal constitutional democracy. No such power exists within the United States Constitution—or any democratic federal republic upon which ours is loosely modeled. The appointment of a Sole Administrator to perform the functions of an elected government raises serious concerns about legitimacy and adherence to the rule of law.

Equally disconcerting is the recent appointment of Sole Administrators for Local Government Councils by the very appointee in Rivers State. This action comes after the Supreme Court, in July 2024, ruled that the use of caretaker committees to administer local governments violates the 1999 Constitution. The court explicitly affirmed that only democratically elected

With 35 states now on board the NHF scheme, the Bank has ensured wider access to mortgage financing for Nigerian workers, addressing the housing deficit in various regions. The FMBN is also collaborating with private developers to deliver affordable housing projects across the country, providing shelter for thousands of families.

Affordable Housing and Job Creation

The bank has also made progress in delivering affordable housing units to Nigerians under Osidi’s leadership. In the past year, the Bank has financed the construction of over 1,044 housing units across the country, with 6,853 ongoing projects in 106 locations.

These units are strategically located in both urban and rural areas, ensuring that low- and middle-income Nigerians have access to decent and affordable housing.

The Bank’s commitment to affordable housing is reflected in its provision of N100 Billion as an off-taker guarantee for the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programmes.

This initiative, championed by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, aims to deliver 3,112 housing units in Karsana, FCT. Additionally, the Bank provides loans to contributors to the National Housing Fund (NHF) Scheme, enabling them to access affordable housing.

local councils are legitimate. The move not only undermines that ruling but also adds fuel to the widespread perception that these appointments are part of a long-term plan to impose Local Government Councils in Rivers State in preparation for general elections in 2027.

Once again, Orwell’s chilling words echo through our present reality: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

These contradictions and inconsistencies in governance raise serious questions about the government’s sincerity in building the nation envisioned in our National Anthem—a nation “where no man is oppressed.” They also erode public trust and confidence in our institutions.

Our leaders need to remember that power is transient. Abusing it today not only normalizes unethical conduct but sets dangerous precedents for the future. If this trajectory continues, we may find ourselves hurtling not just toward Animal Farm, but into the dystopian world of 1984—another Orwellian warning.

We are, indeed, living in interesting times. But this moment also offers a chance for reflection. We must consider where we have come from, how we arrived here, where we are going, and the legacy we intend to leave behind. As Ecclesiastes 1:2 reminds us: “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”

Nation-building is an onerous task but we can find unity in the prayer contained in our National Anthem—a prayer that remains as powerful and relevant today as ever:

“O God of all creation; grant this our one request: help us to build a nation where no man is oppressed, so that with peace and plenty, Nigeria may be blessed.”

Dozie’s remarkable career began in the United Kingdom, where he worked as an economist at the National Economic Development Office and a part-time lecturer at North Western Polytechnic in London. His expertise in econometrics and industrial engineering would later become the foundation of his entrepreneurial ventures.

Between 1970 and 1971, Dozie served as a consulting economist at the African States Consulting Organisation in Uganda. However, due to the country’s unstable political climate, he relocated to Nigeria in 1971 at his mother’s request. This move marked the beginning of his journey as a pioneering entrepreneur in Nigeria’s financial sector.

Founding of African Development Con- sulting Group

Upon his return to Nigeria, Dozie leveraged his experience in econometrics and industrial engineering to establish the African Development Consulting Group (ADCG). The company secured notable clients such as Nestlé and Pfizer, solidifying Dozie’s reputation in Nigeria’s consulting industry.

Diamond Bank and Beyond

Dozie’s involvement in Nigeria’s banking sector began when he was appointed Chairman of Progress Bank in 1985. However, it was the founding of Diamond Bank that same year that would cement his legacy as a visionary banker. In 1990, he satisfied the requirements of the Central Bank of Nigeria to operate a standard bank. Initially capitalised with N10 million and only 21 shareholders, Diamond Bank grew into a nationwide powerhouse under Dozie’s leadership. He served as CEO from 1991 to 2006.

It is important to also state that, despite a five-year licencing delay, Dozie’s establishment of Diamond Bank in 1985 demonstrated his commitment to ethical practices. He refused to ‘short-circuit the system’ even when collaborators

withdrew, prioritising compliance over expediency.

It is noteworthy that he had previously worked at the Central Bank of Nigeria, but he declined to deploy the long leg. His patience fostered trust with regulators and stakeholders, allowing the bank to grow from a modest institution in share capital to a significant financial institution before its merger with Access Bank in 2019.

Dozie was also at one time President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He owned shares in MTN Nigeria and was chairman of the company. He later resigned as the chairman and was succeeded by the former NCC boss, Ernest Ndukwe.

His MTN Traverse

Dozie’s tenure as Chairman of MTN Nigeria was marked by early turbulence when false accusations of conflicts of interest threatened to derail his involvement.

However, instead of reacting impulsively, Dozie maintained his composure and professionalism. His restraint proved to be a strategic decision, as MTN later retracted its allegations after conducting an internal review.

Dozie’s reputation for fairness and professionalism played a crucial role in preserving his involvement with MTN Nigeria. His ability to navigate this challenging situation without resorting to confrontation or negativity ultimately guaranteed ongoing collaboration and paved the way for MTN’s eventual market dominance.

Advocacy for Ethical Business Practices

Dozie was a vocal critic of Nigeria’s culture of shortcuts and advocated for ethical business practices throughout his career. In an interview on his 80th birthday, he likened doing business in Nigeria to an obstacle race, where “smart people short-change the system.”

However, he emphasised that taking the right approach, although challenging, is ultimately more rewarding.

Dozie was a strong proponent of corporate governance and ethical leadership. He co-founded the Lagos Business School (LBS) as an ‘oasis of sanity’ to promote integrity in business education. As a member of the Pioneer Council of LBS, he played a significant role in shaping the school’s values and curriculum.

Dozie’s commitment to ethics and integrity resonated deeply with his peers and students. His humble and old-fashioned approach to business was reflected in his office, which was more akin to that of a senior executive at a manufacturing firm than a bank. This approach attracted

partnerships with global institutions like MIT, enhancing Nigeria’s business education framework.

Dozie’s emphasis on ethics and integrity has left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s business landscape. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Through his work with LBS and other institutions, he helped to promote a culture of integrity and responsible business practices in Nigeria.

Family Business Sustainability

Dozie addressed the challenge of sustaining family businesses in Nigeria by partnering with the Lagos Business School (LBS) and MIT to develop programs for intergenerational business continuity.

Recognising the collapse of notable family enterprises like Fajemirokun and Abiola Group, Dozie’s initiatives emphasised structured governance over nepotism, ensuring that family businesses could outlive their founders.

This approach, similar to that of global giants like Heineken and Mercedes, led to the preservation of wealth and jobs, demonstrating that institutionalised goodwill is a key driver of long-term profitability.

Giving Back

Dozie’s philanthropic efforts were multifaceted and far-reaching. Through the Janet Dozie Foundation, named after his wife, he provided support to over 500 impoverished widows, merging compassion with strategic social investment.

Additionally, his projects at Pan-Atlantic University, where he served as chairman, aimed to transform Nigeria’s value system by promoting accountability and selfless leadership.

These initiatives not only positively impacted the lives of Nigerians but also bolstered public trust, ultimately enhancing their businesses’ social license to operate Dozie’s life exemplified the significance of reputation as a valuable asset in both business and personal life.

For a long time, financial experts struggled to assign a monetary value to intangible aspects, known as goodwill. However, this perspective has shifted, and many companies now recognise that their values and reputation extend far beyond physical assets and financial metrics.

As an intangible asset, reputation has a profound and tangible impact on businesses and individuals alike.

WHAT ARE WORLD EVENTS SAYING TODAY?

cosmic environment, when we also consider that significant interplanetary alignments had coincided in the past with some major global or cultural shifts, scientific breakthroughs and artistic renaissances, then we must also consider the thought that we may be standing amidst heralds of change we do not know enough about.

The disorder, confusion and despondency in our world today is accentuated by the fact that we now have more wars, with others threatening to break out. Natural disasters are tumbling in on all sides. One hundred and ninety-one areas of tornado damage were recorded between March 14 and 16 in the US.

That was less than a month ago. Within the same period 115 twisters were confirmed in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. Other forms of natural and manmade disaster are being distributed all round the world. Economic pressures, environmental and climatic changes, distress of nations, strange and incurable diseases are all on rampage today.

The 2025 US wildfires had more than passing impact on Los Angeles, where it led to significant loss of life and property. The fires came, swept its initial areas of impact and then keep spreading rapidly and unpredictably. California, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura all had sad stories to tell from the fires. So did Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.

So, attempt to put some thoughts on the table regarding where it all this may be leading up to. The first is the fact that our world of Volatile possibilities, Uncertain realities, Confusing demands and expectations and Ambiguous values (VUCA) has come with new developments that portend dangers for all. It is a world that is rapidly altering expectations, rules and the way

so many things are done; and in which many will find themselves at a disadvantage in one way or the other

Another possible fact is that national economies will suffer and so will larger sections of the global population. We have all been living with many unquestioned assumptions about our lives and about international affairs for far too long. As the US is becoming more protectionist and almost trying to shut off the world, the counter measures other nations are being forced to take will become major triggers for new economic events that would affect us all.

The third fact is that the world, and all of us, are being forced to do a re-valuation of values, a reassessment of hitherto accepted paradigms and a recalibration of expectations. Moving in leaps and bounds from the rule-governed global village of only a few months ago to a world where all hitherto accepted norms are being revised without the usual consultations is something no one bargained for.

The other fact is that ours is now a New World order that is forcing a fundamentally pretentious world with well-dressed predatory nations to remove its gloves and boldly bare hitherto concealed teeth. Arbitrariness will very likely be on the upswing. Free trade will suffer, if the trend being orchestrated by Trump continues – and it is likely to. So, welcome to a more deadly period of blind protectionist tendencies and say goodbye to free markets, open skies for aviation watchers, and dangerous national insularity...

Another fact to consider is the possibility that questions must be raised about the world’s multilateral trading system, which had been hitherto projected as resting on clear rules, mandatory concessions and criteria that all countries welcomed because it had something

for everyone. The stabilizing and custodian roles we all once attributed to the World Trade Organization (WTO), complete with its unquestioned template and platform, can no longer be vouched for.

That system certainly did not favour developing countries in more ways than one. It only helped maintain an illusion that Trump is now resolutely unmasking, dismantling and inviting us to dismiss.

Had there been any really honest attempt to reform the system over time, we probably won’t be where we are today. But with Donal Trump as the official demolition man, we are living with the irony today of having the US doing its best to destroy a system it did its everything to bring about and sustain. It would seem that rather than reform the system it is now being destroyed, and for good. Which is hardly surprising.

Let us calmly admit that everything false is collapsing on all fronts. We cannot say that the US approach to international relations, international trade and global politics under Trump will lead to a more peaceful, more prosperous and more stable world. The ongoing retaliatory tariff impositions and counter impositions from various countries, in reaction to Trump’s rampaging moves, will only fuel the comprehensive jettisoning of the presumably hallowed WTO template, paradigms and framework.

Thus, matters are not only likely to get worse, but also get out of hand. And the reason is simple: The limited actions of the most dominant actors in the global economic space will ignite reactions that would lead to the total abandonment of all the false trappings we have all lived with for so long in international relations. As more countries adopt and deploy the same approach as the US, trading and transacting on their

GLOBAL TRADE WAR AND THE AFRICAPITALISM GOSPEL

(UBA) and Heirs Holdings, Mr. Tony Elumelu, advocates for a form of capitalism that prioritises long-term economic and social value in Africa. It’s a call for the private sector to play a leading role in the continent’s development, not just for profit, but for shared prosperity. In the face of global trade uncertainties, this philosophy offers a beacon of hope.

Africapitalism acknowledges that the public sector is insufficient to drive Africa’s development and provides an alternative to government-only methods of market regulation and the delivery of necessary social services.

It calls for the creation of a new Africa via the initiatives of a resurgent private sector that will deal with societal challenges by starting companies and creating wealth for the local community.

Indeed, Africa offers countless untapped economic opportunities as the last frontier of capitalism. That is why the continent needs an endogenous growth model in which it manufactures goods for its markets as a first foundation, spreading out regionally from that base and emerging as an economic power in

its own right through competitive advantage.

One way to do so is to invest heavily and simultaneously in job-creation strategies and in education systems that will create skilled workers to take opportunities that will be created by expanding economies.

Africa’s growth profile is, among other things, driven by its rapidly expanding consumer markets as well as its private sector. From Lagos to Nairobi, Accra to Lusaka and other major cities in the continent, with innovations in the mobile payment space, e-commerce, technology, agriculture and other critical sectors of the continent, promoters of Africapitalism strongly believe that African youths, if given the required support can compete with their peers in the global market, thereby expanding trade in the region. This would help lift the continent out of its present economic predicament.

Additionally, proponents of Africapitalism maintain that the private sector can also contribute to the continent’s development by making long-term investments in critical sectors that will foster social welfare and economic prosperity.

Elumelu preaches to anyone who will listen that with Africapitalism, Africa’s policymakers should “run government like a business,” with legislatures holding administrations responsible in the same way that they hold chief executives accountable. For him, the private sector should aggressively invest even in difficult socioeconomic situations because the continent cannot flourish through government alone.

The founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation strongly believes that entrepreneurship is a vital tool for eradicating poverty in Africa. More importantly, for him, entrepreneurship would get youths in the continent busy and keep them out of social vices as well as create employment opportunities in the continent.

According to the Chairman and Founder of Heirs Holdings, Africa’s development requires massive private global capital to fire and power investments in the area of infrastructure, to create employment and eradicate poverty.

For Africa, the global trade wars highlight the dangers of over-reliance on single markets. Africapitalism encourages the development of robust, diversified African economies, less

own terms, it would be absolute bedlam across board. But can they all see it coming?

Can Africa impose retaliatory tariffs on anyone? I think not. Can Africa escape the effects of the looming trade war? Again, I think not. As faith in international investments wavers, totters and probably falls dramatically, there will be greater uncertainly in international economics and economic relations. Unpredictability will blossom. The result would be a new world order wherein global economic growth will be slow and international trade will boil down to tariff wars and piracy.

Probably no other continent would be worse hit than Africa, largely because of the continents import dependence. To speculate on a possible magical transformation of African economies, in response to the ongoing global drama, is to prance off on a reprehensible exercise in self delusion. As we enter an era where all global institutions that once guaranteed the Rules of Engagement are on all fours, no one can say how the current situation will unfold in the coming months or years. But we must be clear-eyed about the dangers that are building up in the world.

In sum, all international Standard Operating Procedures are on retreat. There is a greater leaning towards selfish considerations by nations. What can we hold unto, or strengthen? Can Africa present a common, or fighting front, of any sort? Just asking. Prepare for the worst, I’d say! But what is the worst, really? Hunger, poverty, balance of trade issues? None of the above, I dare say. It can only get worse if you take time to think about is.

It is about a world on a tail spin, for a new era to be born. The problems are more spiritual than material, as we wonder what world events are saying today.

susceptible to external shocks. By fostering intra-African trade through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the continent can build resilience and create its own economic sphere.

Furthermore, Trump’s protectionist policies can be a catalyst for Africa to strengthen its own manufacturing and industrial sectors. In a world where capital flows are looking for stable returns, Africa, by embracing Africapitalism, can present itself as a region where investments do well. This, however, requires strong governance, transparent regulations, and a commitment to ethical business practices.

Therefore, while the storm rages and uncertainty beclouds global trade, Africa must seize this moment to forge its own path, guided by the principles of Africapitalism. By prioritising sustainable growth, inclusive prosperity, and responsible investment, the continent can not only weather the storm but emerge stronger than ever. The time for Africa to define its economic destiny is now, with Africapitalism gospel as the guiding light, illuminating the path towards a prosperous and equitable future.

After stints with three Premier League sides- Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, Alex Iwobi has never had it as good as in the current season. Just last Sunday, the African Cup of Nations silver medalist delivered a performance for the ages as Fulham stunned Premier League leaders, Liverpool 3-2 at Craven Cottage – and drew high praise from his teammateAndreas Pereira, who compared him with Barcelona great, Ronaldinho.

Iwobi was at the heart of Fulham’s comeback, scoring a stunning goal and providing a classy assist, as Marco Silva’s side produced arguably their best display of the season.

The win ended Liverpool’s 26-match unbeaten run and breathed new life into Fulham’s European ambitions.

Liverpool had taken the lead through Alexis Mac Allister, but Fulham responded with a remarkable 14-minute blitz midway through the first half.

Ryan Sessegnon equalised with a well-taken half-volley before Iwobi turned the game on its head with a superb left-footed strike, capitalising on a mistake by Andy Robertson.

Minutes later, the Super Eagles midfielder, turned provider, delivering a pinpoint cross for Rodrigo Muniz to add a third.

Luis Díaz pulled one back for the Reds in the second half, but Fulham held firm to seal a memorable win and move within four points of the Champions League places.

After the game, Iwobi posted a series of celebratory photos on Instagram, including his goal and jubilant moments with teammates Calvin Bassey and Pereira.

Bassey cheekily captioned the post with “hop out the motor”, referencing their celebration, while Pereira went even further, writing: “Ronaldinho from Nigeria.”

It was another sterling performance from Iwobi, who has been one of Fulham’s standout players this season.

With 37 appearances, 32 starts, eight goals and five assists, he’s been a mainstay under Silva and continues to prove his value in big moments.

Iwobi also reached a personal milestone, becoming the first Nigerian in the Premier League history to register at least 30 goals and 30 assists – a testament to his growing influence in England’s top flight. As Fulham quietly edge into contention for a European spot, the form of Iwobi may yet prove crucial in their late-season push.

It therefore came as no surprise that the Super Eagles attacking midfielder was named in the WhoScored Team of the Week for matchday 31.

Iwobi’s performance, which included a goal and an assist, earned him an impressive rating of 8.17, showcasing his importance to the Fulham squad.

In a match filled with drama, Iwobi’s contributions were crucial as Fulham came from behind to secure all three points.

The Nigerian’s goal came in the 32nd minute, when he unleashed a shot from the edge of the box that deflected past Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

His assist followed shortly after, with Iwobi’s

vision and pace playing a key role in creating opportunities for his teammates.

Iwobi’s dynamic presence on the pitch was not limited to attacking contributions.

His tireless work ethic and defensive efforts also played a significant role in helping Fulham maintain their advantage, ensuring Liverpool’s attempts to equalise were thwarted.

Iwobi has therefore emerged as the first Nigerian to score 30 or more goals and make more than 30 assists in the Premier League when Fulham beat league leaders Liverpool 3-2 on Sunday.

Since his Premier League debut in 2015 for Arsenal in a 3-0 win over Swansea, Iwobi has 284 appearances and also played for Everton before making the move to Craven Cottage in September 2023.

Iwobi was born in Lagos before moving to England at the age of four, following a brief stay in Turkey, and grew up in Newham, London. His maternal uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha was former professional footballer, and his father, Chuka Iwobi, was also a footballer.

He began his professional career at Arsenal, with whom he won the FA Cup in 2017 and finished as runner-up for the EFL Cup in 2018

and UEFA Europa League in 2019. In 2019, Iwobi transferred to Everton, and in 2023 he joined Fulham.

Iwobi represented England up to under-18 level. He made his senior international debut

for Nigeria in October 2015, and was part of their squads at the FIFAWorld Cup in 2018 and the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, 2021 and 2023, finishing third at the 2019 tournament, and runner-up at the 2023 tournament.

Manchester City open the weekend at home to Crystal Palace at 12:30 pm today. Despite dropping points against United, City is still within touching distance of the top four. PMAN on Eedris’ anti-Tinubu song

““The first major mistake is banning the song because it’s going to make the song even go viral right now. Those who haven’t even listened to it will go now to look for the song and will start promoting it. The song has practically pinched the government somewhere, that’s why they ordered for the ban. So, there is already a mistake that has been made by the NBC or even the government by paying attention to that particular song.” – Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) President, Pretty Okafor, voiced strong objections to the NBC’s ban on rapper Eedris Abdulkareem’s trending song, “Tell Your Papa.”

What are World Events Saying Today?

Disorder, confusion and despondency! These three words capture the basic prevailing air across the land. Not just here in Nigeria, but all over the world. Nations, big and small organizations, advocacy groups, communities and individuals are all busy trying to solve one problem or the other. Many are looking forward to solutions of various types. But they do not really know what the problems are, or might be; for which they are seeking solutions. They may just finish celebrating one solution before they realize that the solution they just celebrated has not addressed the original problem, or that it has created new ones.

Sad, is it not?

No one can recognize the solution to a problem when he does not know, or understand, the nature of the problem itself. That is part of the issue on the table all over the world today. The climate, the cosmic environment, the political space, the regulatory environment for businesses, the moral landscape, our spirituality, the religiosity of a morally bankrupt world, the gender crisis, the decay of values are all in the line of fire. Why? Yes, why? Just why is it that everyone, and everything, seems to be going bonkers on the double?

Trump

Bedlam on steroids, and going strong!

Consider the apparently mundane matter of some of the most important decisions of President Donald Trump of the US. His most far-reaching decisions seem to have been taken without recourse to the very institutions set up to uphold what the American Dream is

presumed to represent. Trump signed some 220 Executive Orders during his first term, between January 2017 and January 2021. In 2025 alone, in this his Second Coming, he is recorded to have signed 112 Executive Orders, from EO 14147 through EO 14528.

And he did all that without consulting with, or obtaining clearance and approval from, those elected by the people to speak for them in the matter of what they want the president to do, or not do.

And, lest we forget, Trump is the head of a democratic nation. His country is also the much-vaunted global defender of democracy, inclusivity, human rights and world peace through an attitude of mutual accommodation. He is clearly serious with the Providential business of dismantling the pretensions that have held up a world that can best be described as a living fraud. It has served true humanity in the breach.

Recall that an unusual interplanetary alignment occurred shortly before and around the time Trump was sworn in. It was at about that time that a Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Mercury “lined up” in the Elliptic, in a way that they had not done for a long time now. First there was the alignment of Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus, and Saturn one of January 21, before the Main Event of

Basic Economics textbooks teach that the basis for international trade lies in the principle of comparative advantage and the potential gains from specialisation and trade. This means countries benefit by focusing on producing goods and services they can produce relatively more efficiently and then trading these goods for other products they are less efficient at producing.

Trading internationally is a common way for businesses to transform themselves into more profitable, successful, and stronger entities. It helps to expose their brands to new countries and open innovative markets for promoting their goods and services. It is an essential element in providing employment, raising living standards, and enabling the global population to enjoy a greater variety of products and services, giving it the power to control the world economy with a larger share of GDP devoted to imports and exports.

Unfortunately, since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump is gradually dismantling the basis for international trade and has wielded tariffs with unprecedented breadth and aggression.

On April 2, 2025, a date Trump proclaimed as ‘Liberation Day,’ his administration announced the most sweeping tariff hike since the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, the 1930 law best remembered for triggering a global trade war and deepening the Great Depression.

The levies were against roughly 60 of America’s trading partners. As tariffs are essentially taxes on imports, costs of intermediate and final goods are expected to increase for consumers worldwide, even for countries that haven’t imposed any new tariffs.

According to the US President, part of the rationale behind the ‘Liberation Day’ was to correct decades of open US markets being met with asymmetrical foreign tariffs and other barriers that boxed out the country’s goods. He believes that only aggressive retaliation can reverse the damage and pull manufacturing back onshore. But with major market turmoil that followed the announcement, with sell-offs sparking trillions in losses across the world and many Americans expressing concerns of prices rising as recession looms, the US President announced a 90-day pause on the policy.

However, as the thunderous drums of a global trade war echo, shaking the foundations of

January 25. Then came the one of February 28, before the morning alignment of Neptune, Mercury, Saturn and Venus this month. And the August 11 morning alignment of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, Neptune and Saturn is yet to come.

If both scientific and quasi scientific circles are saying that “The alignment of several planets is believed to amplify the energies of these planets, prompting changes, introspection, opportunity, and transformation across the globe and across all zodiac signs”, it may well follow that this year has quite a few things up its sleeves. A look at history shows that interplanetary alignments have been associated with major energy shifts that impact political, social and environmental changes upheavals that impact nature and create global changes.

Because our world is part of a universe and comic environment that has long since been scientifically confirmed to be a network of interconnected radiations, no one can say for sure what the effects of the alignments of heavenly bodies and their magnetic fields might be. When we consider that astrologers have always considered interplanetary alignments to be moments of amplified energy in our

established economic orders, Africa finds itself at a critical juncture. While some top US trading partners have since responded to the United States’ reciprocal tariffs, African countries that are certainly going to be hit by this global trade distortion are yet to outline proper measures to navigate this challenge.

Presently, Africa’s total exports to the United States have increased by 43 percent over the past two decades, from $28 billion in 2000 to $40 billion in 2024, even though exports to the United States from the continent have remained primarily raw and extractive.

The overall effect of the new US trade policy in the coming months would likely be slowly rising costs of goods in African countries as seen in the wake of the Covid-19, especially with the risks it poses to the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA).

But the raging global trade war presents both challenges and opportunities. This is where the Africapitalism gospel becomes more relevant than ever. Africapitalism, which is championed by the Chairman of the United Bank for Africa
