of maize which sold for N80,000 in January, now sells between N60,000 and N70,000 depending on the grade and bargaining power.

According to the THISDAY survey, the price of groundnut oil has decreased. A 5-litre bottle of King’s oil that was sold for N23,000 in January can now be bought at N19,000. There was also a sharp reduction in the price of beans, which formerly sold for N105,000 in January but now sells for N80,000.

A 25-litre of palm-oil sold between N63,000 and N65,000, is now being

sold for N45,000.

Further findings showed that 120 pieces of yam which was sold at N300,000 in January, now sells for about N180,000 to N200,000, depending on the type and sizes of the Yam, either Abuja Yam, Benue Yam, etc.

Onion prices have also dropped. It is now possible to buy six to 10 pieces of medium to big sizes of onion for N1000 as against three or four pieces at the same price three months ago at Mile 12 market. A small bucket of sweet potatoes currently

sells for N2,000, down from N6,000 it was in January, while Irish potatoes of similar size sell for N3,500 from N9,000 it was in January.

In Kano, a market survey at Rimi Market indicated that the average price of 50kg of parboiled rice now sells at N80,000 as against the N95,000 it went for two months ago.

Findings revealed that the price of a sack of local rice, containing 40 mudus significantly dropped from N180,000 to N120,000.

In an interview with a foodstuff seller at the Dawanau International

Grains Market, Mr. Yahaya Kawu said he now sells one bag of millet at N58, 000 as against the N78, 000 it was sold two months.

He further revealed that the price of beans, which is commonly used to for the preparation of meal to break the Ramadan fast, has also decreased significantly.

According to Kawu, the current market prices of one bag of beans now sells at about N80,000 as against about N150,000 it went for at the end of 2024.

RIVERS ASSEMBLY ADJOURNS INDEFINITELY, FUBARA WRITES FRESH LETTER FOR BUDGET PRESENTATION

Chuks Okocha, Alex Enumah Sunday Aborisade in Abuja, Blessing Ibunge in Port Harcourt and Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City

The political rumpus and battle for the control of the soul and treasury of Rivers State appears to be turning for the worse, fuelling fears of actualisation of the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the 27 Lawmakers allegedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyeson Wike as the Rivers State House of Assembly yesterday adjourned its sitting indefinitely, after passing three bills into law.

The House adjourned in the face of a fresh letter from Fubara proposing to present the 2025 budget to the lawmakers next Wednesday, in obedience to the judgment of the Supreme Court.

With the sine Die adjournment, the Governor is now left in the lurch, totally grounding administration of the State.

The escalation of the crises and alleged rebuffing of peace moves by the former governor made the PanNiger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and the former Deputy National Chairman and Board of Trustee member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George to ask President Bola Tinubu to call to order and prevail on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wike, to embrace reconciliation and peace talks being brokered by the Forum.

PANDEF threatened to disband their peace efforts if Wike refuses to embrace peace.

This was as the Ijaw National Congress (INC) said it would refrain from being provoked by the tirade of Wike against the Ijaw nation but would focus on peaceful resolution of the impasse while former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Dr. Chris Ekiyo warned Wike to guard his tongue and be cautious in his utterances against the Ijaw nation

During its plenary yesterday presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, the Rivers House of Assembly passed three bills aimed at strengthening the state's legislative framework and improving governance.

This came about 24 hours after Fubara re-wrote the House that he was coming to present the 2025 appropriation bill, following the recent Supreme Court judgement on the political crisis in the state.

The three bills passed it was learnt included: Rivers State House of Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Bill, 2025, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Bill, 2025, and the Rivers State Local Government Bill, 2025.

The Rivers State House of Assembly

(Powers and Privileges) Bill, 2025, seeks to grant the House powers, privileges, and immunity to perform its legislative duties effectively.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Bill, 2025, aims to repeal the existing State Electoral Law of 2018 and re-enact a new one to provide for the establishment, composition, and functions of the Commission in line with the Electoral Act of 2022 and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Rivers State Local Government Bill, 2025, seeks to repeal the State's Local Government Laws of 2018, 2023, and 2024, and re-enact a new Local Government Law that will be in sync with contemporary laws in the administration of Local Government Councils.

The passage of these bills was expected to have a significant impact on the state's governance structure and administration.

Amaewhule, stated that the House was domesticating the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act of 2017 that gave certain powers and privileges to the Legislature in the performance of its function.

He averred that the RSIEC Bill was very crucial, given the need to be in tandem with the Electoral Act and the Constitution.

Similarly, the Speaker harped on the importance of making the Local Government Law reflect certain constitutional provisions, adding that the Rivers State House of Assembly would continue to perform its Legislative duties in the best interest of the people.

After the members unanimously voted in the affirmative for each of the three Bills, the Speaker passed them for onward transmission to the Governor for assent for the benefit of the State.

Amaewhule said, "For sacrificing your recess in the interest of the people, history will be kind to you."

He further extolled them for going the extra mile in working for the State and the people. The House thereafter adjourned sine die.

Again, Fubara Writes Rivers Assembly on Presentation of 2025 Appropriation Bill

Meanwhile, Fubara had as part of efforts to obey the Supreme Court judgment, again written to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, notifying the lawmakers of his intention to present the 2025 appropriation bill.

In a letter dated March 13, 2025, and addressed to the Speaker, Amaewhule,

the governor stated that he would present the budget to the Assembly on Wednesday March 19, 2025, at 11am or any other convenient date from them.

According to the letter, the governor said, he was complying with both the order of the Supreme Court and the request of the State House of Assembly when he came to present the 2025 budget on March 12, 2025 but was locked out at the gate and denied entry into the premises.

Fubara had stated that despite prior delivery of a soft copy of notice to the Speaker due to the failure of the Clerk to accept the hard copy from them, the lawmakers denied him access to the assembly complex on May 12.

The governor recalled further that, before the unfortunate incident, the House had issued a 48-hours ultimatum to present the 2025 budget even when he was yet to be served with the certified true copy of the judgment and accompanying enrolled orders.

Fubara emphasised that no matter the depth of their differences (executive and legislature), he believes that the interests of the State and the people should take priority over political conflicts.

He said, "The Supreme Court has directed that all arms of government should exercise their powers and perform their duties within the ambit of the constitution and ordinary laws of our country, and this we must do to end the lingering stalemate and advance the progress of our State and

the well-being of our people."

INC, PANDEF, Bode George Tackle Wike

Meanwhile, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has stated that its members would not be provoked by the recent comments from Wike, discrediting their ethnic nationality.

In a letter signed by National Publicity Secretary, INC, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, the group stated that Wike's assertion that the Ijaws are minority of minorities betrays a lack of intellectual depth.

He said: "The INC has taken note of the recent remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Given his eight-year tenure as Governor of Rivers State, we expected a more informed understanding of the state's history.

“For the record, the Ijaws are the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria, with over 40 million people, and the oldest tribe in Nigeria, as documented in history. They are the largest ethnic group in Rivers State, with eight local government areas, and also not a minority in Delta.

"We suspect that Wike's comments were made under the influence of misinformation and otherwise. The Ijaws have consistently advocated for fairness and equity in the Niger Delta region and the South-South, and we will not be swayed by individual attempts to provoke us."

basis. There's no religious colouration, no identity. It affects all, and we must fight it together," the President emphasised.

On the request to return mission schools that governments have taken over, Tinubu said schools are subnational entities, not owned by the federal government.

"I've been a good example as the governor of Lagos state. I returned all the mission schools," he said. The President commended the Catholic body's commitment to education and healthcare. He added that he set up NELFUND to ensure that no student dropped out of school due to a lack of funds for tuition fees promising to look at ways to help students of private institutions that NELFUND does not cover.

foods such as Irish potatoes, local potatoes, garri, yams, and soya beans have also experienced a substantial decline, providing considerable relief to households.

Some residents welcomed the development, especially during Ramadan when many Muslims stock up on various food items enabling them to enjoy their iftar (breaking of fasting).

The fall in food prices was also attributed to the cessation of hoarding activities by some businessmen, who had previously stockpiled food items to artificially inflate prices.

Another food dealer in Kano, Mallam Adamu Inuwa, pointed out that the abundant harvest resulting from last season's heavy rainfall led to a significant decline in hoarding activities, which have now reached an all-time low, rendering their activities obsolete.

Inuwa, revealed that hoarders were compelled to release their surplus food into the market and sell it at lower prices, fearing that the items would spoil or avoid loses if not sold promptly.

An analyst, Bashir Mohammed has attributed the fall of food prices in the country to the improved agricultural practices, favorable weather conditions, and government initiatives to boost food production which led to a surplus in food supply, causing prices to drop.

He further explained that lifting of the ban on food imports and the suspension of duties on some imported food items has drastically increased supply chain.

Abubakar Sa'idu of Naibawa Quarters in Kano State, said despite the recent decline in food prices nationwide, as a low-income earner, he still struggles to feed his family of six, citing the persistent challenges of food affordability for vulnerable households.

He appealed to the federal government to take decisive action to alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary citizens, who struggle daily to make ends meet.

Also speaking with THISDAY in Lagos, some traders attributed the sharp drop in prices to market forces, while some others attributed

it to low demand.

A yam seller, Wadata Aminu, noted that “The price drop has been a thing of shock. No one can hoard the product again because when you do that, even for a day, it will depreciate. We have a surplus supply of yam coming into the market daily at slightly cheaper prices.

“We began experiencing it in January, and it has remained so even in March. Every day, new yam is supplied at cheaper prices, so how can you even hoard the product and not lose money? So I think this is what is responsible for the consistent drop in the price.”

Also speaking with THISDAY, a Rice Trader, Mrs. Blessing Uwanghogho noted that, “The drop in price of rice is a good development, only that the patronage has dropped.

“This is because as of December 2024, we sold a 50kg Bag of Rice for as high as N110,000, and that I think probably scared a lot of people away from eating rice, and now they buy alternatives like spaghetti instead. So we have excess supplies in the market, and the demand isn’t measuring up like it used to.

“I think this is why the price of rice began to fall because the demand for it began to drop last year as people can no longer afford it, especially in similar quantities they used to buy before the price hike.”

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has commended President Bola Tinubu for his bold and audacious steps in removing subsidies and ensuring that market forces determine the exchange rates and not the government.

Abiodun said the bold move by the President was already paying off with the downward trend in the prices of food, fuel, and inflation, especially during the month of Ramadan.

The governor, who stated this during the Special Iftar (Breaking of Fast) with the League of Imams and Alfas at the Presidential Lodge, Abeokuta, the governor noted that it was the first time in the history of Nigeria that prices of foodstuffs and other Commodities and products are coming down during the month of Ramadan.

FG REFUTES US CONGRESS’ CLAIM, INSISTS CHRISTIANS NOT TARGETS

OF KILLINGS

Muslims, particularly in the North, are disproportionately affected by the ongoing security crisis.

The remarks came in response to United States Congressional hearings and potential sanctions authorised by President Donald Trump, which were prompted by reports of increased killings of Christians in Nigeria.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the statement expressed strong concern over the recent wave of misinformation and misleading reports regarding the supposed targeted killings of Christians in Nigeria. It noted that the unfortunate development was intended to influence foreign governments, especially the United States Government, to designate Nigeria a CPC.

It added: “While the federal government acknowledges the security challenges confronting the nation, it is imperative to clarify that these negative activities are not driven by religious bias, nor targeted against any particular religious group.

“It should be noted that the majority of incidents relating to insurgency and banditry that occur in the predominantly Muslim northern part of Nigeria are not targeted at followers of a particular faith or religion. Any narrative that seeks to give such incidents a coloration of religious persecution is erroneous and misleading.”

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, “Nigeria is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation and the government remains committed to protecting the lives and properties of all citizens, irrespective of faith, ethnicity, or gender.

“The security issues in Nigeria are complex and multifaceted and manifest as criminality, terrorism and communal clashes – including farmer/herder confrontation, that do not have any religious connotation.”

The statement added that: “The government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken significant steps

to address these security concerns, including the deployment of security forces, intelligence gathering and community engagement initiatives.

“Indeed, the military has recorded substantial gains in curtailing the activities of bandits and insurgents. To bring an end to such security challenges, both the Federal and State authorities have embarked on kinetic and non-kinetic methods and expedited the implementation of the national livestock plan.

“To this end, a Ministry of Livestock Development has been established while a Special Adviser and Coordinator of Livestock Reforms, has been appointed to find sustainable solutions to pastoral farming, with a view to end contestations over land, between farmers and pastoral herders.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs therefore urged the international community to exercise caution and verify information before drawing conclusions or making statements that

could exacerbate tensions within Nigeria.

“We call on all stakeholders, including the media, civil society organisations and foreign partners, to refrain from spreading unverified claims that could undermine national unity and stability.

“Nigeria remains a beacon of religious tolerance and coexistence in Africa and is committed to preserving this heritage.

“We welcome constructive dialogue and support from the international community in addressing our security challenges. However, we strongly reject any attempts to wrongly designate the country, distort the narrative, or sow seeds of discord among our people,” it added.

In the same vein, speaking to THISDAY, Dambazau, a retired Lieutenant General and former Chief of Army Staff, argued that the US Congress mischaracterised the nature of the conflict, driven by a misunderstanding of the realities on the ground.

Edo APC, State Govt Trade Words over N9bn Fresh Loan Approval

A’Court Halts Sanusi’s Reinstatement as Emir of Kano

The battle for the Emir of Kano, assumed a new dimension yesterday, when the Court of Appeal in Abuja, issued an order halting the enforcement of its own judgement recognising Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday, urged Governor Godwin Obaseki to stop securing loans, noting that the N9 billion loan recently approved by the House of Assembly was needless and will plunge the state into financial distress.

A three-member panel of the appellate court in the latest ruling held that its judgement of January 10, that upheld the Kano State Government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law, should not be enforced until the apex court

But in a swift reaction, the Edo State Government said it was perplexed to learn of what it termed “laughable and incredibly ridiculous tantrums attributed to the new acting chairman of the Edo State chapter of APC, Jarret Tenebe where he made baseless and spurious allegations on the fiscal management of our dear state by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government.”

The appellate court took the decision on the grounds that Justice Liman acted without jurisdiction. Dissatisfied with the judgement, the appellant approached the Supreme Court to upturn the

It is most disheartening that the Edo State Government now is requesting for a facility of N17.5 billion with no corollary of project attached there to the said facility and also that the facility is not contained as loan to be taken in the 2024 fiscal budget just recently passed. The United States President, Donald Trump, yesterday urged Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to spare Ukrainian troops that Russia was pushing out of its Kursk region, an appeal Putin said he would honour if they surrendered.

Besides, the appellant filed an injunction at the Court of Appeal urging it to stay execution of the judgement pending determination of the appeal at the apex court.

Ruling on the motion yesterday, the three-member panel of justices led by Justice Okon Abang held that the application was meritorious and deserving of the court’s discretion in the interest of justice.

"Information at the behest of the members of the Edo State House of Assembly is to the effect that they were recalled from their holiday or leave by the Speaker on the request of the state governor for the immediate approval of the said facility which according to them is said to be N9 billion but as event unfolded, after the mammoth request by the opposition in the House as to the rationale for a facility as

The appellate court further held that the proper order the court should make "shall be the maintaining of the status quo ante bellum", adding that "the sheriff of this court and trial court as was the position before the trial court in the judgement delivered on 13/6/2024 in the suit no. Additionally, the appeal court acknowledged the applicant’s legal right to protection, considering that he had served as Emir for five years before his removal.

Rather than focus on reawakening his completely comatose party, which is unable to provide constructive criticisms expected of a viable opposition, he has resorted to spreading misinformation in a desperate attempt to curry cheap popularity.

"In reality, our debt stock is not a secret and in fact, we are ‘under borrowed’. Emperor Tenebe would have known this if he understood the economics of governance, fiscal responsibility and debt-to-GDP ratio.

The appeal was brought against the Kano State Government, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security agencies.

bordering on terrorism and murder.

General Musa also stressed that the ideology behind terrorism was strong, and therefore, the military and other security agencies must do everything within their power to discredit and dismantle the murderous ideology.

General Musa, who said this during an interview on ARISE News Channel,

that regard, has approved your suspension as the Onido of Ido in the area of authority of Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State." It directed Oba Babalola to hand over all government properties in his possession to the Chairman of Ido local government. In the meantime, the state government has vowed to hit hard at anyone, no matter how highly placed, who contravenes the law.

Justice Bolaji Olajuwon of a Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday, dismissed the application by two Rivers State indigenes challenging the jurisdiction of the court to try them over alleged complicity in the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to him, "We need areas that are liberated from terrorists to be protected so that life can return to normalcy. Once we clear an area, we move forward and the police and civil defence need to take charge of the areas so that the government can rebuild. But most times, we go forward and still come back to hold forth."

Chime Eguma Ezebalike and Prince Lukman Oladele, were among five persons charged with terrorism and murder. The others are Kenneth Goodluck Kpasa, Osiga Donald and Ochueja Thankgod.

On why the military have to go back and forth to protect liberated areas, the Defence Chief said that the police are challenged with insufficient manpower and equipment.

They were last week arraigned on a seven-count criminal charge

According to him, "The capacity of the police needs to be enhanced, and that is why the ongoing police reform is very critical.

"A nation can survive without the military, but no nation can survive without the police. It is critical that we get our police up and running. I know efforts are being made, but we need to do more."

Although, they pleaded not guilty to all the charges, the judge however, ordered that they be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Center, pending the hearing of their bail application fixed for February 2, as well as the motion of the 1st and 2nd defendants challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit against them.

General Musa also disputed the global terrorism index report, arguing that enemies of the country often use such reports to demoralise the troops whenever the country is making serious progress towards ending terrorism.

He explained that the Sahel region had become the epicentre of terrorism in the world.

Ezebalike and Oladele had argued that by the provisions of the Terrorism Act, it is only the Attorney General of the Federation that can file any charge of terrorism against them.

Their lawyer, Mr. Lukman

"The Sahel seems to be the most impacted, and why it is so is because of the ungoverned spaces. Libya is unstable, Sudan and the Central African Republic are going through crises, and there is also an absence of good governance. So, smuggling of small arms and light weapons, drugs, and human trafficking within these corridors also exacerbate growing security threats and terrorism in the Sahel.

"Apart from that, we have the issues of climate change, hunger, poverty, and illiteracy. There is indeed an upsurge of terrorism in the Sahel, and Nigeria is the attraction. They believe that Nigeria is rich and anybody who comes into Nigeria will have a lot to eat".

Fagbemi, SAN, submitted that the charge having been filed by the Inspector General of Police, was incompetent and asked the court to strike out counts 1,3,4,5,6, and 7 of the charge or strike strike out the entire suit for been incompetent. Responding, Police lawyer, Mr. Simon Lough, SAN, urged the court to dismiss the application for lacking in merit. According to Lough, besides Sections 4 and 66 of the Police Acts that empower them to bring the charge against the defendants, Section 5 and 99 of the Terrorism Act, shows that the police have powers to also initiate terrorism charges against the defendant.

MEDIA BRIEFING BY AMCON...

AMCON Recovers N2.1trn from Debtors amid Challenges

Reveals N227.6bn recovered from Arik Air

Wale

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has announced the recovery of over N2.1 trillion in debts despite ongoing challenges since its inception. However, the agency still faces over 2,000 court cases, as some debtors failed to utilise their borrowed funds for their intended purposes.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Lagos, AMCON’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Jude Nwauzor, addressed the debt burden of Arik Air Limited (in Receivership) and its founder, Sir Johnson Arumemi-Ikhide, reaffirming AMCON’s determination to recover N227.6 billion owed by the airline.

According to Nwauzor, many debtors manipulate the media to misrepresent AMCON’s efforts,

painting the corporation in a negative light.

“These are individuals whose actions have severely impacted the Nigerian economy. The media must not allow them to rewrite the narrative,” he stated.

He emphasised the importance of collaboration between AMCON and the media to ensure factual reporting on debt recovery efforts.

Nwauzor detailed that Arik Air Limited (in Receivership) is one of AMCON’s major debtors, alongside other companies owned by Sir Johnson Arumemi-Ikhide, including Rockson Engineering, Ojemai Farms, and Ojemai Investment Limited.

As of December 31, 2024, these companies owe AMCON a staggering N455.17 billion, with breakdowns as follows: Arik Air Limited – N227.6 billion, Rockson Engineering – N163.5

Abiodun Appoints Best Unilag Graduates Education Ambassadors

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has appointed Messrs Samuel Badekale and Haroun Adebakin, who emerged as the best graduating students of the University of Lagos during the institution's 55th convocation, as the Education Ambassadors of the state.

The governor also presented them with cheques of N10m each to appreciate their efforts.

Speaking while receiving the duo in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the governor said that by scoring a Grade Point Average of 5.0, they not only made the state proud but also set themselves on the path of greatness.

According to the governor, his administration would continue to honour individuals who made the state proud in their chosen careers to serve as motivation for others to discover their full potential.

He said, "I want to commend you for achieving this great honor for yourselves, your families, the state, and Nigeria, because it is not enough that you come from Ogun State and are flying Ogun State's flag.

"We are going to appoint you as our Education Ambassadors. It is our hope that other up-andcoming students, those who are still in school, will see you and find motivation in you, allowing them to emulate your good virtues.

"You have to think about how you can support and motivate them. As our Education Ambassadors, we are going to develop programmes where you can actually go to schools and talk to them because it will be easier for you to communicate with them.

"I can talk to them, but I may not be able to communicate with them effectively. However, when you speak to them, you will be able to connect because they can identify with you as you are of the same wavelength and age bracket, and you can relate to what they are going through, including their pains and issues.

"I congratulate you as our Education Ambassadors, and I don't want you to be too far away from the Commissioner for Education so that whatever career path you choose, we can support you in achieving your potential and all that you aspire to.

"But today, we will be supporting you with small cheques of N10m each—just a token of our appreciation to you and your parents for what you have accomplished in making Ogun State proud."

Abiodun expressed delight that despite the decadence in society, some young men and women remain committed, deliberate, diligent, and intentional about their academics by choosing the right path as a means of emancipation.

billion, and Ojemai Farms – N14.03 billion

Nwauzor dismissed claims by Arumemi-Ikhide that Arik Air never defaulted on its loans.

He challenged the airline founder to disclose whether he indeed took the loans and, if so, to explain his repayment efforts.

“If the loan was performing, why was it sold and restructured? Why did he agree to the restructuring? Did he fulfill the agreed terms?” Nwauzor questioned.

AMCON revealed that Arik’s debt originated from loans acquired from Union Bank of Nigeria, Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank), and others. In 2010, Union Bank classified the loan as non-performing and transferred it to AMCON after warning Arik

about its financial instability.

He said,"By 2016, Arik Air had a negative equity value of N80 billion and total liabilities of N289 billion. By December 2016, the airline’s negative shareholder capital surged to N139 billion, nearly matching its AMCON debt.

"In 2017, AMCON took over Arik Air, citing chronic mismanagement, flight cancellations, unpaid staff salaries, and regulatory violations. The airline was on the verge of collapse, unable to maintain its fleet or fulfill ticketed obligations.

"Between November 2016 and January 2017, Arik suspended several operations, failed to pay for insurance, and owed N30 billion to aviation regulators, including the NCAA, FAAN, and NAMA.

The government, concerned about aviation safety and over 1,500 employees' jobs, urged AMCON to intervene.

"In 2021, Arumemi-Ikhide challenged AMCON’s receivership in the Federal High Court, Lagos, but Justice A. Lewis-Allagoa upheld AMCON’s authority, affirming the legitimacy of the takeover."

He said despite this ruling, Arumemi-Ikhide continued to contest the debt, claiming AMCON mismanaged Arik’s fleet and that his loans were still performing.

AMCON, however, countered these claims, revealing that when it took over, only eight aircraft were operational, contradicting Arumemi-Ikhide’s assertion of 30 functioning planes.

Some of Arik’s aircraft, AMCON added, had been used as collateral for personal debts and were later repossessed by creditors. AMCON, established in 2010 to stabilise Nigeria’s banking sector, has faced significant resistance from debtors, many of whom exploit legal loopholes to avoid repayment.

“If AMCON cannot recover these debts, the burden falls on taxpayers. The general public will end up paying for the recklessness of a few individuals,” Nwauzor warned. He urged the media and the public to hold debtors accountable, emphasising that AMCON remains committed to recovering all outstanding obligations, including those of Arik Air and its affiliates.

Gov Okpebholo Suspends Public Safety Response Team

Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the indefinite suspension of the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) headed by Kelly Okungbowa.

Tragic incident unfolded on Thursday in Benin City, capital of Edo where a two-year-old girl lost her life in a fatal crash allegedly caused by members of the Edo State Public Safety Response

Team (PSR).

A statement by the Secretary to State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor, said the government remains committed to upholding law and order and will not tolerate any deviation from the original purpose for which the team was set up. The team was dragging the steering wheel with a commercial bus driver and in the process, hit a mother and child. While the woman

sustained serious injuries, the child died instantly.

"This decision is occasioned by several complaints received by the State Government on allegations of extortion, harassment and unruly behaviour by members of the team" it noted.

According to the statement, the team was set up to help maintain public order, assist in protecting public infrastructure and curb illegal activities like street

trading and illegal parking in our communities.

"A thorough review of the team’s structure and operations, particularly recruitment processes and training of its personnel will be conducted to ensure that all government-sanctioned activities in the state reflect the highest standard of professionalism, fairness, orderliness and respect for human dignity," the statement added.

David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has described health and education sectors as most critical to national development.

Obi said this when he visited Colleges of Nursing in Ahiara, Imo

State and Ihiala in Anambra State to make donations of N20 million. Obi underscored the significance of his donation, stressing that healthcare and education are critical to national development and the well-being of citizens.

Commending the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara for embarking on the college of nursing project, he

described it as a vital contribution to securing a better future for Nigeria.

Obi said, "Government must prioritise quality education, including the prompt payment of teachers’ salaries. There is the need for free and accessible education at the primary and secondary levels, both in public and private schools.

"We continue to support the

colleges of nursing to ensure they become centres of excellence in training healthcare professionals who will contribute to national development.

“My Lord (Most Rev. Simeon Nwobi), what you are doing is a great service to our country. This donation is not a favour to you, but a recognition of your efforts

Tinubu Determined to Turn Nigeria into Africa's Creative Hub, Says Musawa

Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja

Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa said President Bola Tinubu is determined to build the capacity of Nigerian youths through job creation by turning Nigeria into a creative and cultural hub of Africa.

Musawa asserted this in Abuja at a Ramadan fast breaking Iftar, assuring that the youths will begin to see the results in the next couple of months in the form of different programmes.

She noted that the President was also keen in ensuring the existence of a ministry that will

add a lot of value and worth to Nigerians.

"He is so interested in building something different, special, innovative, dynamic for future generations. It's not about this government or the next government.

"He wants us to build something very strong, fortified, to give the growing population, especially the younger demographic, a hope for the future," Musawa said.

According to the minister, the government has in the last couple of months put up that strong institutional framework that can allow it to tap into the big, bigger

potential in the industry.

The minister assured that the economic expansion will be distilled to the different sectors that will empower the nation.

She described culture as a constituent of the nation's history, its ideals, values and traditions, that should also be tapped into and turned into an asset.

On the fasting season, Musawa highlighted the significance of unity among Nigerians, particularly during the sacred periods of Ramadan and Lent.

The minister, whose message resonated hope and optimism, particularly for the creative

industry, stressed that both Muslims and Christians were observing periods of spirituality, fostering a sense of unity and togetherness. She described her ministry as the "happy place of Nigeria," while also acknowledging its importance for future generations.

"We're celebrating Ramadan, our Christian brothers and sisters are also fasting and celebrating Lent. So, you know, it is a time of unity for me. You know, it just shows the importance of unity.

"We all belong to one realm. We all belong to Almighty. We all worship the same Almighty. It is really about unity".

Akpoti-Uduaghan: Women Group Storms UN, Demands Proof of Sexual Harassment, Fair Hearing

A group of protesters under the aegis of Women For Change Vanguard yesterday stormed the United Nations office in Abuja where they demanded fair hearing and evidence that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was sexually harassed by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio. Also yesterday, a human rights activists, Deji Adeyanju, warned against the planned shutdown of the National Assembly complex, over the current face-off between Kogi State Senator, Akpoti-Uduaghan and the leadership of the Senate under Akpabio.

Adding its voice to the raging controversy, the FixPolitics, a sociopolitical group, has urged the Senate to rethink the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying the action is gender insensitive.

The Leader of Women For Change

Vanguard, Irene Imor recalled that over the past few weeks, Akpabio had faced significant reputational damage due to unsubstantiated allegations of sexual harassment made by his colleague.

She was of the opinion that the issue of accountability in discussions surrounding sexual harassment cannot be overstated.

Imor stated: “As we stand at a critical juncture in our fight against sexual misconduct, the allegations made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senator Akpabio raise serious concerns that necessitate thorough scrutiny.

“It is important to remember that in any allegation of misconduct, the burden of proof lies with the accuser.

“If Senator Natasha claims to have been a victim of sexual harassment, we urge her to come forth with credible evidence to support her accusations. The gravity of such claims demands accountability.

“We are particularly troubled by the growing trend of misusing the #BelieveAll Women mantra, which can inadvertently shield unfounded accusations against men."

Imor noted that this was not the first time Natasha has made serious allegations against a prominent figure.

She stressed that such actions risk becoming a weapon she wields against men in power, undermining the core principles of our fight against sexual violence.

Imor added, “As mothers and members of the Women for Change Vanguard, we are acutely aware of the implications of false accusations. Such claims not only harm the accused but also diminish the experiences of genuine survivors.

“We call on Senator Natasha to provide concrete evidence of her claims against Senator Godswill Akpabio. Should credible evidence be presented, we will stand firm in our commitment to ensuring that

justice is served.”

Iramo said their peaceful protest was not merely about demanding justice, it was also about holding both parties accountable.

According to her, Akpabio must have the opportunity to clear his name, while Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan must evidence that she was sexually abused.

Meanwhile, reacting to how the issue is fast degenerating across North and South divide, Adeyanju advised Nigerians not to be involved in the personal affairs of the senators, explaining that the battle is not for the well-being of the average citizens.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the rights activist and legal practitioner, urged Nigerians to rather protest against most of the anti-people policies of the current administration.

Adeyanju described the ongoing crisis at the Senate as diversionary from the serious issue of the Tax Reform Bills which is currently before the federal legislators.

in nation-building. I will always support this project because it is about securing a better future for our country."

At the Holy Rosary College of Nursing, he handed over a cheque of N10 million to the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Most Rev.Simeon

Nwobi, at the construction site of the college. Also at Our Lady of Lourdes, Ihiala, he presented the donation to the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Miss Anigbo Chisom Mary, in the presence of hundreds of excited students.

Police Warn El-Rufai over Malicious Allegations against Security Agencies

John Shiklam in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has warned former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to desist from frivolous and malicious allegations against any security agency.

El-Rufai had on Thursday accused the Kaduna State government of using the police as Governor Uba Sani’s "kidnapping gang" to arrest Ja’afar Sani, a former commissioner in his government.

“Our colleague and versatile former commissioner during the El-Rufai Administration – Mallam Jafaru Sani has been abducted in Kaduna by Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang claiming to be the police, this afternoon!..." El-Rufai had written on his X handle on Thursday. However, in a statement yesterday, spokesperson of the Kaduna State command, Mansir Hassan, said there was no kidnapping gang within the Nigerian Police Force.

The statement read: "The attention

of the Kaduna State Police Command has been drawn to a statement credited to former governor of the State, Malam Nasir El Rufai, on his X handle, wherein he alleged that one of his former Commissioner Malam Jafaru Sani, was abducted by what he referred to Uba Sani’s 'kidnapping gang' which he claimed to be the police.

"The former governor further stated that Jafaru was remanded in prison custody by a magistrate without any police First Information Report or charges by the State Ministry of Justice.

"To put the records straight, there is no kidnapping gang within the Nigerian Police Force.

"The Nigerian Police as an institution is created by the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act. These two statutes mandate the Police to maintain law and order". Hassan said in the discharge of its constitutional duty, have the legal right to arrest and investigate whoever is suspected to have committed an offence.

Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo in Umuahia

Minister of Regional Development, Hon. Abubakar Momoh, has said that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) would no longer witness abandonment of projects as was done in the past.

He stated this Thursday during the inauguration of the reconstructed 23.7 kilometre Ndoro-Ntalakwu Road and the adjoining road networks traversing Ikwuano and Umuahia South Local Governments of Abia State.

Nigerian Breweries Champions Reforestation, Sustainability at Olokemeji Forest Reserve

Nigerian Breweries Plc in collaboration with the Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Forestry, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and local community stakeholders, has taken significant steps toward reforestation and sustainability in the Olokemeji Forest Reserve.

The initiative contributes to Nigerian Breweries’ ambition to replenish watersheds in priority water-stressed areas by enhancing water retention in the local ecosystem, restoring biodiversity and protecting native tree species.

In addition, the project provides alternative economic opportunities for local communities while also contributing to carbon sequestration, strengthening climate resilience and

promoting long-term environmental sustainability.

The project, which began in March 2021 and is now well underway, has already resulted in the restoration of 292 hectares of land, with 283,904 trees planted across more than 70 indigenous species, including the African Breadfruit (Ukwa) and Araba.

The native species were carefully selected to ensure long-term ecological balance rather than relying on exotic commercial trees that fail to support the local ecosystem.

Speaking at the project site, Corporate Affairs Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Sade Morgan, emphasized the importance of sustained engagement in preserving the reserve.

Minority shareholders of PZ Cusson

Nigeria Plc (PZCN) have voted not to approve the conversion of N51.8 billion or $34.26 million of the outstanding intercompany loan amount owed by the company to PZ Cussons (Holdings) Limited into equity. The decision was made at PZCN’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held recently in Abuja.

While there was strong minority shareholder support for the transaction, a significant minority shareholder bloc

voted against the transaction and the approval threshold was not met.

The debt conversion was proposed to resolve challenges stemming from Nigeria's currency devaluation and historical forex liquidity challenges. In June 2022, PZCH advanced an intercompany loan of $40.26 million to help PZCN settle foreign currency payables for raw materials and operational costs due to the ongoing forex scarcity.

Following the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market in June 2023 and subsequent Naira devaluation, the foreign exchange debt position drove

an exchange loss of N157.9 billion, resulting in a N76.0 billion loss after tax and a negative shareholders' equity position of N27.5 billion for the financial year ended 31 May 2024.

Despite strong operational performance — with 34 per cent and 42 per cent year-on-year revenue growth for the periods ended 31 May 2024 and 30 November 2024 respectively, continued Naira depreciation has further eroded operational profits, worsening the negative net equity position to N34.5 billion as of 30 November 2024.

Commenting on the outcome of the EGM, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

of the Company Dimitris Kostianis said, “We would like to thank our shareholders for participating in the EGM and for their active engagement in the process. "As a response to shareholder feedback received during the meeting, the majority shareholder amended the proposed conversion terms to reduce the level of debt to be converted and increase the conversion price, which would have reduced minority shareholder dilution and also ensured that the Company remained compliant with the 20 per cent free float requirement.

Farewell, Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe

BANWO MAYOWA pays tribute to Doyin Okupe, a physician and politician

My mentor, principal, and father figure

Dr Doyin Okupe was, in many respects, the very embodiment of a renaissance man—a physician, a political raconteur, and an indefatigable champion of nation-building. Born on 22 March 1952 into the illustrious Agbonmagbe royal lineage, his early life foretold a destiny not only marked by regal distinction but also by a penchant for trailblazing innovation and wry commentary. His journey, from the hallowed halls of Igbobi College and the University of Ibadan to the bustling corridors of Lagos’ political and medical spheres, reads like a masterclass in resilience and reinvention.

In his medical career, Dr Okupe was more than a practitioner; he was a visionary who co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre and launched “Life Mirror”—Nigeria’s inaugural health-focused newspaper. These endeavours were not mere professional milestones but veritable declarations of his belief that enlighten ment and healing must go hand in hand. His approach, often laced with subtle wit, served as a clarion call to both his peers and the public, affirming that serious work need not be devoid of humour or human touch.

sies with the same aplomb that characterised his public service. Each challenge—be it a courtroom battle or a media skirmish—served only to refine his resolve and sharpen his already prodigious intellect. His victories were not merely personal triumphs; they were contributions to the fabric of a nation striving for excellence in both its political and educational sectors.

On a more personal note, I had the distinct and singular honour of serving as his aide since 2016 until his demise. In that time, he transcended the conventional boundaries of a professional relationship, regarding me not merely as an employee but as a son. His paternal warmth and mentorship imbued my life with a sense of purpose, underscoring his unique ability to blend leadership with familial care.

Transitioning seamlessly into the realm of politics, he became an influential force in shaping modern Nigerian discourse. As the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention and later as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr Okupe demonstrated that, in a country where political rhetoric frequently bordered on theatrical farce, one could wield words as both sword and salve. His acerbic wit and incisive commentary not only cut through bureaucratic red tape but also redefined the very essence of political communication.

Dr Okupe’s career was not without its trials. He weathered legal storms and public controver-

HIS LIFE WAS A BRILLIANT INTERPLAY OF CHALLENGES MET WITH VICTORIES, SETBACKS OVERCOME WITH GRACE, AND A CAREER THAT, QUITE LITERALLY, CHANGED THE COUNTRY

The void left by his untimely departure—a loss felt deeply across the political and educational arenas—is as poignant as it is irreplaceable. His death did not merely signal the end of an era; it left a gap in the national discourse, a silence where his witty repartee and sagacious insights once resonated. Nigeria, a country indelibly shaped by his influence, now mourns the passing of a man who transformed governance into an art form.

As we reflect on the multifaceted legacy of Doyin Okupe, we remember a man who defied convention and whose very presence was a testament to the transformative power of intellect, humour, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His life was a brilliant interplay of challenges met with victories, setbacks overcome with grace, and a career that, quite literally, changed the country.

I will greatly miss you sir. Until we meet to part no more.

Climate Action As Gateway To Growth And Prosperity

Bold climate plans can drive Nigeria’s economic growth and enhance living standards, contends

The Nigerian government has set ambitious, transformational targets—to lift 100 million people out of poverty and achieve a 7% economic growth rate.

Climate action – from installing solar panels, to diversifying crops - is key to reaching these goals, bringing electricity to over 85 million Nigerians without access, and ensuring economic stability and rising living standards.

Last year, the global clean energy boom surpassed $2 trillion, according to the International Energy Agency. Nigeria has a prime opportunity to seize a major portion of this growing market. Doing so will drive investment, create countless new jobs, and build resilience against the climate crisis, protecting Nigeria’s people and economy.

The key to unlocking these benefits for Nigeria’s people is a strong new national climate plan. All countries have to put together new plans this year under the Paris Agreement. Major developing economies such as Brazil have already delivered theirs, because they know that strong plans will deliver huge human and economic benefits.

One thing was very clear to me, during my meetings last week with parliamentarians, senior government

officials, civil society, and businesses in Lagos and Abuja: Nigeria is committed to climate action. And it has every reason to be.

This country has huge advantages in this increasingly competitive global race: abundant solar and wind resources, critical minerals like lithium, vast mangrove forests that protect against floods, and, most importantly, its inspiring and dynamic people.

Now is the time for deployment of solar energy instead of expensive diesel, and investing in green buildings, clean infrastructure, and creating a domestic manufacturing base.

Climate change is already hitting Nigeria hard—from floods in the south to droughts and desertification in the north, climate impacts are slashing up to 5% off GDP. Coming from a small island, Carriacou, I know this firsthand. Last year, my home was battered by Hurricane Beryl, causing devastating destruction. I’ve seen lives and livelihoods ripped away.

But now is no time for despair. There are steps Nigeria can take today to make a difference. It can prioritize climate resilience by strengthening infrastructure to withstand extreme weather, planting drought-resistant crops, and protecting natural defenses like mangroves and forests. A Na-

tional Adaptation Plan can provide the framework to drive these efforts forward, and boost progress right across the Sustainable Development Goals.

None of this is possible without finance. Significant investment is needed—fast. As COP30 President, Brazil is laser-focused on increasing global climate finance for developing nations, despite political headwinds. We will work with Brazil to deliver on finance commitments made in at the COP29 climate conference last year, including on how to increase global climate finance to $1.3 trillion a year.

But this isn’t just about finance from governments. Private sector investment is ready for takeoff in Nigeria and many other developing economies. From big business in Lagos, to the micro, small and medium enterprises throughout the country – which make up 90% of Nigeria’s vibrant, innovative economy.

Nigeria can become a world leader in clean and climate resilient industries, if barriers to action are addressed. Every business and investor I spoke to said they needed lower costs of capital and more accessible and predictable financial flows. We also need to address risk perception – too often costs of capital reflect outdated

ideas of the challenges of investing in Nigeria, and other developing countries.

A strong climate plan will only deliver its full potential if it works for everyone. Nigeria’s incredible diversity—its regions, industries, and communities—must all share in the massive benefits climate action can bring. That means ensuring clean energy reaches every home and business, that farmers from the north to the south gain from climate-smart agriculture, and that investments create opportunities for people across the country.

That’s why I’m encouraged by Nigeria’s inclusive approach—ensuring every voice is heard and every sector understands their role. Because this is about real benefits Nigerians can see and feel in their daily lives: more jobs, less pollution and better health, and stronger businesses. By bringing everyone on board, Nigeria can seize this moment to drive economic growth and improve lives, with thriving communities future powered by clean, affordable energy, accessible to all.

In Praise of President Buhari

Exoneration of Alleged Witches in Colonial Maryland

TWhen President Muhammadu Buhari took over the reins of power on May 29, 2015, Nigeria was sadly a broken state in many respects. As a result of many other factors including bad governance and untold level of corruption, government could not live up to its financial obligations to citizens and service providers at both the federal and state levels.

Indeed one of the first official assignments that President Buhari carried out was the approval of billions of Naira in bailout funds to enable state governors pay something as basic as workers’ salaries. Granting those bailout funds was a huge boost to national security because the pressure of arrears of unpaid monthly salaries building dangerously all over the country was a ticking bomb.

Ask the naysayers and they would readily remind you of how long it took President Buhari to appoint his ministers and how that contributed to collapse of the economy as if, without ministers, governance was frozen. But buying that narrative would amount to what a famous Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie, termed “the danger of a single story”. Yet the whole story was that many of our citizens did not know how decrepit a state President Buhari inherited in 2015.

his testimony urges the general assembly of Maryland to vote yes to HJ0002 and support the exoneration of alleged witches of colonial Maryland. I am a Nigerian citizen with relatives who are American citizens and residents in Maryland. I hold a doctoral degree in religious studies and wrote my doctoral thesis on witchcraft accusations in Northern Ghana. In Ghana, where I did my fieldwork, accused witches are still abused and violated as was the case in colonial Maryland. In my thesis, I explored the dynamics and contestations of witchcraft allegations in post-colonial Africa, where witch-hunting rages and ravages the lives of many people. In 2020, I founded the Advocacy for Alleged Witches to address this problem, to work, respond, and campaign to end witch hunts in the region. As an organization, we are dedicated to ending witch hunts and ritual attacks in Africa. The British Broadcasting Corporation, South African Broadcasting Corporation and other international media channels have featured our work and campaign in their reports.

by the EFCC, President Buhari by his action has successfully brought back to the public consciousness the need to treat public funds with the highest level of transparency and accountability.

Central African Republic, alleged witches flee to stay in prisons to avoid being killed. In Ghana, they take refuge at make-shift shelters popularly known as witch camps. Not too long ago, a young Ghanaian woman along with a female diviner beat the grandmother, Akua Denteh to death. In Nigeria, another young woman accused her mother and subsequently set her ablaze.

After keeping treasury looters on their toes and at bay through the EFCC, particularly, President Buhari moved to curb unnecessary spending habits of the nation on what economists call articles of ostentation. Part of the disclosures of the President’s stock taking was how the country frittered away billions in foreign currency by importing goods, which can be produced at home. One of such items was rice, a major staple among Nigerians. By banning rice importation into the country, the President on one hand had saved the nation billions in foreign currency annually.

Witch trials take place and jungle justice is meted out on the accused with impunity. Some weeks ago an elderly woman who had dementia was accused of witchcraft and beaten to death in Nigeria. Alleged witches, mainly women, children, and people with disabilities are attacked, banished, lynched, stoned to death, buried alive, or tortured to confess to the ‘crime of witchcraft’ as was the case in colonial Maryland.

And, on the other hand, the President has boosted domestic production of rice and in the process had nudged the country into self sufficiency in food production. He also created millions of jobs for young people in the rice value chain.

In Praise of Zacch Adedeji

Stop Ritual Attacks and Killings

WTI am testifying on behalf of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches in support of exoneration for the accused witches of colonial Maryland because in many parts of Africa, Asia, and Oceania witch hunting is not a thing of the past. This miscarriage of justice continues and persists in this 21st century. Witchcraft accusation is a form of death sentence for the accused. It is an incitement of hatred and violence. Accused persons are most often treated with indignity, without mercy and compassion. Alleged witches are humiliated and disgraced. They are denied fundamental rights and freedoms including rights to life and freedom from torture and inhuman and degrading treatment.

It was therefore necessary for him to take stock against the background of the fact that the departing government did not, reportedly, cooperate full well with the incoming government in terms of leaving workable handover notes. Although President Goodluck Jonathan was gracious in defeat, many of his appointees were still sulking over what they saw as their personal losses and therefore pulled all the stops to make things difficult for the Buhari government.

Even with the obvious and unpatriotic obscurantist behaviour of the PDP appointees and their supporters still in government hell-bent on making things difficult for Buhari, the President moved on with his methodical repair of a broken country. The first thing he did was to identify all possible sources of income to the nation and directed that all inflows be paid into one single account in line with the policy of Single Treasury Account (TSA).

The TSA policy, interestingly, was mooted by the PDP government but its penchant for imprudence and lack of accountability denied it the courage of implementing the policy. What the President literally did was to gather all the nation’s money into one box and locked it up with a big padlock and watched for any thief to come close.

Alleged witches are beaten and flogged. They are tortured, stripped naked, or set ablaze. Accused persons are buried alive. They are banished and dispossessed. In Malawi, accused persons are stoned to death or lynched. In Zambia and Zimbabwe, witch hunters seize their cattle and belongings; they confiscate their houses and farm produce or set them ablaze. Accused people suffer extortion and are made to pay heavy penalties for committing no crime.

The exoneration of accused witches of colonial Maryland will be a powerful symbolic signal. It will send a clear message of hope and light to contemporary victims of witchcraft accusations and witch persecution in Africa, and the rest of the world. It is never too late to acknowledge and correct past injustices. An act of injustice has no expiration date, especially where similar injustices are perpetrated elsewhere.

What is most admirable about President Buhari and his government is its frugal management of scarce national resources to attain optimum goals. Recall that since President Buhari stepped in the saddle, oil revenue dropped abysmally as if to sabotage him knowing all the big promises he made to citizens during his campaigns. But with the little resources that trickle in, the President is achieving what governments that received oil windfalls could not dream of.

Today, the trains are up and running daily from Abuja to Kaduna. And from Lagos to Ibadan a brand new rail track was started and completed; citizens are already commuting daily to and fro these two major cities in the country seamlessly as they reap from the dividends of democracy. And with the way this government is going, before 2023 when the President would leave, the entire country would be linked by rail with all of its economic advantages.

In Nigeria, alleged witches are abducted from their homes, and disappeared. They are subjected to jungle justice and trial by ordeal. hen we look at Nigeria as a country, we all know there is more to it than just its challenges. Nigeria is a land of opportunities, rich in resources and talent. When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected, we can say that was the beginning of the reform we needed. He came in with the Renewed Hope agenda, a vision put in place to transform the economy and governance. But a vision alone is not enough. Execution matters, which is why he surrounds himself with people who can turn ideas into reality. In this administration, if you cannot deliver, you cannot stay.

Therefore, the President carefully selected a number of people, “the reliable,” who can confidently translate his ideas and policy reforms of making Nigeria greater to reality and something to behold. Amongst these eggheads is the indefatigable, dependable, and ever reliable Zacch Adedeji.

he Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) urges the Nigerian public to stop ritual attacks and killings because the notion of ritual money and wealth is completely baseless. AfAW is making this call following the reported arrest of suspected ritualists in Oyo State in southern Nigeria. The local media reported that members of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, arrested suspected ritualists with the body parts of a 73-year-old man. The suspects, who were apprehended in the Boluwaji area in Ibadan, said that a Muslim cleric asked them to procure some human body parts for rituals. Ritual attacks are widespread in Nigeria. Irrational conceptions of how to make money or become wealthy and successful undergird these atrocities. Many Nigerians strongly believe in blood money, known in some local languages as Ogun Owo (Yoruba) or Ogwu ego (Igbo). They think that they could become rich, or successful through ritual sacrifice. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Ritual wealth has no basis in reason, science, or reality. Home movies known as Africa magic or Nollywood films have not helped matters. These movies continue to reinforce these mistaken notions and other superstitions. Families, churches, mosques, and other public institutions do not encourage the interrogation of these traditional occult beliefs. There are no robust efforts to criticize or dispel these irrational and paranormal claims in schools, colleges, and universities. So millions of Nigerians grow up blindly believing that they could make money through ritual sacrifice of human body parts. The belief has led many Nigerians to commit crimes and perpetrate atrocities. Many Nigerians have been jailed or are undergoing court trials due to ritualrelated attacks and murder.

Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is one of those delivering. He has proven this time without number. He is a results-driven technocrat who has taken on some of the toughest responsibilities in this administration. He has introduced automation, shut down leakages, and made it easier for people and businesses to comply with tax laws in Nigeria. Government revenue is growing, and money is being channelled into critical projects that benefit everyday Nigerians. Despite his demanding role at FIRS, Dr. Zacch has taken on national assignments, including ensuring the seamless implementation of the Naira-based crude oil supply framework. He has worked closely with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to ensure that local refineries like Dangote, Port Harcourt, and Warri are not sidelined in crude allocation. By supporting structured agreements that promote transparency and efficiency, he is preventing unnecessary forex exposure and protecting the naira from further depreciation.

Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, technical assistant to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service

Not too long ago, the police arrested some young Nigerians for stealing female pants, which they intended to use for ritual sacrifice. AfAW is asking all Nigerians to desist from ritual-related abuses because ritual money beliefs are baseless superstitions. Nigerian media, schools, and colleges should help educate and reorient the public. They should assist in reasoning Nigerians out of this killer-superstitious absurdity and nonsense.

Adewole Adebayo Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition under SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Adewole Adebayo, has announced his intention to run again in 2027.

He said clearly that everyone within the SDP is aware of his presidential ambition in 2027.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show yesterday, Adebayo said SDP is not engaged in any discussions regarding a coalition with other political entities.

He said SDP is committed to maintaining its independence and pursuing its own agenda ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

His remarks came amid political

Security: Borno Gives 110 Vehicles, 280 Houses to Police, Others

Michael Olugbode in Maiduguri

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has distributed 110 brand new operational vehicles, 500 motorcycles and 280 houses to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to assist in the ongoing war against crime in the state.

The distribution was flagged off by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who commended the initiative and described the governor as a "performing governor" in the fight against insecurity in the North-east.

The ceremony, held at the Government House in Maiduguri, was attended by top security officials, including the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Waidi Shuaibu; Deputy and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and others.

According to the distribution formula, 60 vehicles will be allocated to the Nigerian Police and 50 vehicles and 500 motorcycles to the Nigerian military.

Similarly, the police will be allocated 220 houses at Mai Mala Buni Estate, 20 at Kashim Shettima Estate and

another 40 at Wulari, all in Maiduguri.

In his address, Governor Zulum emphasised the importance of supporting security forces with the necessary tools which, he said, would enhance their efficiency and dedication to duty.

He said, “Today, marks a significant step in our unwavering commitment to strengthening the security architecture of Borno State; we are gathered here to present 100 operational vehicles, 500 motorcycles and housing quarters to members of the Nigerian Police Force and military, as the case may be, who tirelessly serve and sacrifice to safeguard our communities.

“This modest gesture continues our government's commitment to the security agencies, which are the cornerstones for achieving peace, progress, and development in our state.

“These vehicles will enhance their mobility, improve their response times, and bolster their operational capabilities in the fight against insecurity and social vices.”

The governor commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership in supporting the security agencies.

realignments following the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP.

El-Rufai had suggested the possibility of a broader opposition coalition to challenge the APC in future elections.

However, Adebayo downplayed the idea, adding that such discussions were taking place outside the SDP’s leadership.

“As a coalition, it is not within our party; maybe people are having

discussions outside, and after having their discussions, they feel like they can come to the SDP and try to work within the SDP.

“We have no crisis in our party. When they were offering positions, we didn’t join them, we remained where we were. Many more will join us if you’re consistent and build your house and do not get distracted. What we are trying to do here is to ensure that whatever is chasing people from wherever they are coming from does not affect our party,” Adebayo said.

The former presidential candidate also made it clear that his 2027 bid was well known within the party.

“Everybody who is coming in knows I’m going to run in 2027. Even everybody at my party knows I am going to run. There is what is called seniority.

“When you join my party, you’re coming to learn from us the SDP way. You may have known politics elsewhere, but you’re joining as an ordinary member," he added.

Despite rejecting the idea of a coalition, Adebayo welcomed

el-Rufai’s defection to the SDP, describing him as a “skilled administrator”.

“I recognise el-Rufai as someone who is a technocrat and an achiever when you give him an executive job to do. He has his own weaknesses, and it is his job to deal with them. I’m not his therapist, and I am not his mentor.

“The reason I welcomed him to my party is that I see him as a patriotic Nigerian, hardworking and effective in an era where we don’t have effective people in government,” he said.

Troops Foil Terrorist Attacks, Kill 13, Arrest Suspects in South East

COAS directs commanders

Linus Aleke in Abuja

Troops of Operation UDO KA have recorded significant successes in the South-east, foiling terrorist attacks and arresting suspects.

This was as troops of Operation DELTA SAFE also dealt a significant blow to oil thieves in the South-south region, recovering 675,266 litres of stolen crude oil, 312,593 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 4,500 litres of DPK. Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, also neutralised 13 terrorists.

The developments came the same day the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, directed Battalion Commanders of the Nigerian Army (NA) to effectively tackle all emerging threats to national security by showing exemplary leadership in the command of their troops.

Pharmacists Call for PSN, NAFDAC’s Collaboration on Reopening Sealed Drug Markets

Pharmacists under the umbrella of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) Lagos State branch, have called for a stronger collaboration with National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) toward plans to re-open some of the recently sealed markets across the country.

Speaking during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Lagos chapter, Chairman of PSN, Lagos, Babayemi Oyekunle who expressed worries over the influx of fake drugs, foods and drinks into Nigeria despite efforts towards regulatory control, said there was the need for PCN and NAFDAC

to work strategically together on plan to re-open some of the sealed markets. He urged for the invocation of relevant Pharmacy and Drug Laws in facilitating a lawful re-opening of all the sealed premises with particular emphasis on those who are ready to comply with the law.

According to him, "the dilemma of a well-regulated drug distribution channel has always been with us in Nigeria. As far back as 1988, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), carried out studies on the prevailing drug distribution system in Nigeria. The

WHO studies revealed that 33 per cent of drugs in circulation in Nigeria were fake, and seven percent of this quantum was fatal on consumption."

This, he said, led to the promulgation of Nigeria’s first decree on fake, counterfeit, and unwholesome food substances vis Decree 21 of 1988 which was subsequently amended by Decree 17 of 1989.

Throwing more light on the menace of fake and counterfeit drugs distribution in the country, Oyekunle noted the unimaginable volume of fake drugs in Nigeria and sources, and its effects and sources as revealed in 1998.

to tackle emerging threats to national security

A statement by Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said on March 9, 2025, troops made contact with IPOB/ESN extremists at Mbatoli and Okigwe Local Gvernment Area of Imo State, neutralising one and recovering two pump action guns and 11 live cartridges.

In another operation, General Kangye stated that troops repelled an attack by IPOB/ESN extremists in Orsu LGA of Imo State on 10 March 2025, neutralising one and recovering his weapon.

He added that the troops also arrested five suspects and rescued

one victim in Osisioma LGA of Abia State and Oguta LGA of Imo State, stressing that the successful operations have significantly reduced the activities of IPOB/ESN terrorists in the region.

He revealed that the Air Component of Operation UDO KA also conducted air missions to Obinze in Imo State, extending to Ebonyi State, covering Ivo, Ohaozara, Ikwo, Ezza South, and their adjoining settlements.

Noting that the air missions further degraded the capabilities of the extremists, ensuring a safer and more secure environment for the citizens, General Kangye stated that

The Coordinator of the Operation Whirlwind of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hussein Jibunu, said the operation has yielded significant results in combating the smuggling of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), revealing that NCS intercepted and seized 916 jerrycans of PMS, containing 25 liters each, with a total volume of 22,900 liters in Adamawa State.

He said that seized items, valued at N22,900,000, were being transported through unauthorised routes, intended for illicit trade that undermines the economy and security of Nigeria.

"This interception is a testament to the effectiveness of Operation Whirlwind and the collaborative efforts of the NCS, Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and Nigerian Midstream and

Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

"Operation Whirlwind was launched to combat the smuggling of PMS, which remains a significant challenge driven by economic disparities and the lure of quick profits. The NCS, under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, is committed to dismantling smuggling networks and bringing economic saboteurs to justice."

According to Jibunu , the success of Operation Whirlwind is attributed to the bravery, vigilance, and professionalism of its officers and men.

He however urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest Customs' office, emphasising the importance of collaboration in creating a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

How Gov Eno is Unlocking Akwa Ibom’s Economic Potential

From the inception of Governor Umo Eno’s administration, entrepreneurial development has received varying degrees of attention in line with his economic blueprint, The ARISE agenda. This agenda serves as a visionary plan aimed at propelling the State’s socio-economic growth and transforming the lives of its citizens.

Driven by the conviction that true prosperity lies in economic diversification and sustainable development, the Governor has placed entrepreneurial development at the centre stage of his policy drive.

A keen observer of his administration can attest to the premise that this is not merely governance as usual; it is a calculated stride towards a future unshackled from the volatility of oil dependence–a bold shift towards a future beyond oil.

In the brief yet impactful span of 20 months, Governor Eno has distinguished himself as a leader with an eye cast firmly on the horizon. Under his stewardship, the State is undergoing a profound transformation, with its economic gears shifting towards a more sustainable trajectory.

The foundation of this transformation is the investment in agriculture, the first component of the ARISE agenda, and the development of an entrepreneurial economy built upon the pillars of entrepreneurship, innovation, and the cultivation of a strong middle class.

Evidence of this shift lies emphatically in the various entrepreneurial development initiatives championed by Governor Umo Eno’s administration across the state.

A powerful demonstration of this economic renaissance materialised on March 11, 2025, with the launch of the ARISE Entrepreneurial Equipment Support Scheme which directly empowered over 2,000 Akwa Ibom entrepreneurs, providing them with 10,000 essential equipment alongside cash prizes for educational excellence.

It was not mere philanthropy, but a calculated investment in human potential thoughtfully designed to provide targeted resources to entrepreneurs across a spectrum of vital crafts.

Tailors received advanced sewing machines, barbers were equipped with modern grooming tools, shoemakers got improved machinery, and countless others were given the tools to elevate their trades.

In addition, 77 mini buses and 31 saloon cars were presented to beneficiaries to further enhance their mobility and business operations.

In supporting educational excellence, Governor Eno also recognised outstanding educational achievements through the Academic Excellence Award and Exceptional Grit Award. Edidiong Essien, who scored eight As in the 2023 West African School Certificate Examination, received N10 million while Dr. Joseph Akpan, a medical doctor who scored 10 distinctions, was awarded full tuition and living expenses to study for a master’s degree in any University of his choice abroad.

The Governor also donated N15 million to five students who triumphed in the Singapore-Bilateral

International School Debate, with an additional N5 million granted to their dedicated teachers.

Through empowering SMEs and supporting educational excellence, the Governor is already creating a thriving middle class that will drive economic growth and development and at same time sending a strong signal that hard work pays and that meritocracy rather than mediocrity will be the order of the day.

In a revealing statement, the Governor articulated his vision, stating that his best legacy would be the number of lives he would have positively impacted through entrepreneurial support schemes.

Just three days before March 8, 2025, he hosted a Town Hall Meeting in Abak where he splashed cash on MSMEs for more productivity and profitability.

On that day, over 620 farmers, traders, MSMEs from Abak, Etim Ekpo, and Ika federal constituencies got a portion of the billions earmarked for this activity across the state. Among the beneficiaries, six individuals were awarded a generous N5 million grant each, while 178 farmers received N500,000 each under the ARISE Farmers Grant. Additionally, 442 people across various sectors were granted amounts ranging from N150,000 to N700,000, depending on their specific business needs.

Today, Akwa Ibom State is leading in the various aspects of the ARISE Agenda in view of building a post-oil Akwa Ibom; one economically diversified beyond oil dependence.

Governor Umo Eno has come to reawaken the spirit of enterprise deeply embedded within the Akwa Ibom people. Through strategic policies focused on agriculture, comprehensive skill acquisition programmes, and job creation initiatives.

His performance within the last 20 months in office has exceeded expectations, shocked, as well as silenced early critics.

His fiscal philosophy is distinctly pragmatic; he is not an advocate for indiscriminate spending. Instead, he commits to empowering citizens with the means to create sustainable wealth for themselves.

His approach is rooted in equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge necessary to achieve economic independence, self-reliance, and emancipation from economic stagnation and pervasive poverty.

The Ibom-LED initiative serves as a prime example of this philosophy in action. Under Ibom-LED, the Governor has so far trained over 1,500 budding entrepreneurs in various skills, resulting in a quantum leap with far-reaching impact.

Expanding on this, 400 female youths who recently graduated from Ibom-LED were given N500, 000 each for business capital plus N250,000 for store rental. These will have a multiplier effect in the next few months thereby reducing unemployment and promoting wealth creation.

The Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre (DASAC) further exemplifies the commitment to grassroots empowerment. Two hundred youths selected across the 31 Local Government Areas recently graduated from free training with a monthly transport allowance of N20,000 per person

throughout the training duration in various courses.

To further demonstrate his administration’s proactive stance on youth empowerment, Governor Eno recently disbursed a total of N750 million to 15,000 unemployed youths selected across the State as part of the Governor’s initiatives to support unemployed youths while awaiting employment opportunities. In line with his economic advancement plan, the Governor has partnered with the Bank of Industry (BoI) by providing N2 billion counterpart funding to boost SMEs at a single digit interest rate.

This will enable SMEs access low-interest and long-term loans to support and expand their businesses, create more job opportunities, and contribute to the overall development of the State.

Many may see his gestures and initiatives as mere philanthropy, but from a place of introspection, his vision is clear; he is laying out a strategic and intentional roadmap towards a future of economic renaissance.

Unarguably, his commitment to human capital development, strategic investments in entrepreneurship and innovation, and his passion for youth empowerment deserves commendation and unalloyed support. Amidst criticisms and acclaim, he remains a leader with a profound conviction in the power of skills development in repositioning the state’s economy, while simultaneously ensuring the prosperity and self-sufficiency of his people.

Linda Osifo: Early Stage of My Acting Career Was Tough, Challenging

Nollywood actress and TV host, Linda Osifo grew up in two countries - Nigeria and Canada. Influenced by both worlds, and having trained as a Psychologist, Osifo was torn between practicing in Toronto, and pursuing her passion of becoming a screen performer back home. She settled for the latter after weighing the options. The simple, very downto-earth Lady takes Ferdinand Ekechukwu through her journey into acting, modeling, Life outside set, and more about herself. Excerpt:

Who is Linda Osifo?

Linda Osifo is a girl who is just simple, very funny, and very down-to-earth. She loves taking adventures. She’s a character on her own. She’s super athletic and loves sports. She loves everything about art. She loves to work a lot. She has a soft heart. She’s a humanitarian, she dislikes taking advantage of others. She loves fashion and uses fashion to express herself. Her favourite animal is a lion; she hates any animal that slides on the ground. Her favorite shade of color is black and royal blue is her color. My horoscope sign is Leo. She goes crazy over Banga soup and starch, especially with snails and dried fish! She loves listening to music and dancing but not a great dancer at all. The rest of me, I’m still discovering one day at a time.

Howwasgrowinguplike,familybackground,andhow hasitcontributedtowhoyouaretoday?

My life while growing up would have to be broken down into two phases. The first phase is growing up in Benin City, Edo State, where I was born. I spent most of it around my grandmother. I believed that may have contributed to my level of maturity at a young age. Growing up in Benin was the average, typical day-to-day struggle with insecurity and instability. I mainly remembered most of my childhood experiences to be traumatic due to the major insecurity my family experienced at that time. The second phase of growing up for me was in Canada, where life was very different and structured. That phase took place from age 8 till 22. I spent those years closely growing up with my parents and siblings. My parents are faith-based and very supportive of me. This created a strong bond between my parents and myself. Both experiences have tremendously contributed to the way I view life and to what I am today.

Haveyoualwayswantedtobeanactor?

Yes, I have. I auditioned and performed for my first ever acting

role at the age of 14 in a Christmas school play in St. Marcellus Catholic School in Canada. I grew up in a small community church where I had managed the youth group and coordinated its entertainment departments such as dancing, drama, children and youth day, and many more. Also, I specialised in courses that had to do with drama both in high school and university and was always hands-on with anything that involved fine arts at every stage of my life. All I needed to do was choose the one that I loved the most and that was acting.

Whatwereyoudoingpriortoacting?

I was still in school studying psychology at York University Canada and a part-time health worker before professionally acting.

What has the experience been like since venturing into acting?

Since I ventured into acting professionally, it’s been another experience that words truly can’t explain. It’s a life journey. I say that because each stage comes with different life experiences. The early stages of my acting career were very tough and challenging because I was an unknown face. I was dealing with cultural, environmental, and social changes all together within that time. I did not know anyone in the industry or understood exactly what I was doing. I was simply looking for job opportunities everywhere and every day, I would go out for auditions that I felt could be a breakthrough. The experience started changing when I got my first break into the spotlight from Desperate Housewives Africa in 2015. I started to understand what I wanted and what I am doing. I was able to take more control of my choices. Overall it’s been a great and beautiful experience that I couldn’t be grateful for.

You also model alongside acting, tell us about it. Which didyoustartwithfirst?

Both modeling and acting had been playing alongside me since I started. I started as a beauty queen in 2012, which had created an avenue for me in modeling.

Whatmovielaunchedyouintothelimelight?

The African adaptation of the ABC Studio series, titled Desperate Housewives Africa, by EbonyLife in 2015. Tell us a bit of your journey into acting; what attracted you…Whatwasthefirstmovieyoufeaturedin?

My journey into acting started after I contested in a beauty pageant when I was 21. A producer saw my pageant performance and immediately offered me a position as a TV Host for a Talk show. I got to interview local guests and celebrities. I saw how effortless I flowed with the camera and how much I loved seeing myself on the screen. From that platform, I was offered my first acting role in 2012 for an international job in New Jersey which was “Family Secrets” by Onyeka.

Whatdoyoukeepupwithwhenyouarenotonset?

When I’m not on set I keep up with my friends and family and some one-on-one time with myself.

As Omoni Oboli’s ‘Love in Every Word’ Breaks Record, Rises over Setbacks

One of the most talked about movies this week is Omoni Oboli’s ‘Love in Every Word” which was released on her YouTube page about a week ago. Within three days of its official release, the video had garnered more than 5,800,000 plus views and created a social media frenzy.

Many poured out their appreciation for the quality of the production and how it gave a theatrical feel to its viewers but a few others still had some comments to make out of it.

Leading cast, Uzor Arukwe and Bambam Olawunmi-Adenibuyan gave this production a touch of pure romance, comedy and drama.

Bambam playing the role of Chioma; an extremely committed woman to her career, but always seems to fall in the hands of not so good men who simply play on her emotions and money.

Chioma has proven time after time how her performance at work has brought in so many wins for the company, but at the center of her career is a female boss who is just overbearing and annoyingly exhausting.

While on a trip to the East for a wedding, she met Chief Obiora, played by Uzor Arukwe. He came at a time she was just rolling out of a bitter break up but the next steps he took to patiently win her heart knew no bounds. Many may picture it as not a typical Igbo man’s play out but this drama gave a different light to who

an Odogwu truly is.

Chief Obiora’s character was just everything expected and Uzor played it out so well giving it the theatrical balance it needed to convey and portray the image of the character.

But when Chioma couldn’t balance out to love him as he wanted, she started drifting away making excuses but eventually that only leads to her loving him more in such a helpless manner. Frankly, this was simply attributed to how she had loved all her life as she was always the

woman showing the care, affections, financial support and much more but now seeing a man come through with all of that with every breath of truth, genuine intentions and perseverance was unsettling. But at the end of the almost two hours production, their love found a resting spot and blossomed onwards.

Now, despite the movie’s success, gaining widespread recognition and praise—especially for Bambam’s character and Uzor’s, who was famously referred to as “Odogwu Panranran” it also faced significant backlash.

The backlash escalated when some individuals attempted to report the film on YouTube, leading to its temporary removal. However, it was swiftly reinstated, reaffirming its impact and popularity.

This got a lot of people excited as many took turns posting videos expressing themselves. Omoni Oboli on the other hand in a post on her Instagram spoke about this incident stating, “Hey besties, thank you for the love and concern. We deeply appreciate you all for your calls, messages, posts, tweets, comments everything! I’m sorry I couldn’t respond at the time. There was a little misunderstanding with our movie Love in Every Word.

“It’s been sorted out now and we are back stronger than ever! So let’s make up for the time lost besties. Time to make sure the whole world watches LOVE IN EVERY WORD on Omoni Oboli Tv on YouTube. God will forever be glorified.”

As of the fifth day, the film had garnered about 8.9 million views and was growing stronger to 10 million. In the middle of all these, fans have

come together to throw their weight of support for Omoni Oboli, BamBam and Uzor whose combined artistic and production skills have resulted into a masterpiece the whole nation is talking about. Bam Bam really gave her role an applauding performance because if you talk about interpretation of character, expression of emotions, use of words and overall general acting it can all be certified solid.

Moving ahead this entire production is a solid 10 and comes to show that quality precedes quantity because with just about two major characters throughout the movie the film hit the consciousness of thousands swiftly and with precision. Omoni Oboli deserves all her accolades and more but prior to the emergence of the backlash she had expressed her joy about the pace at which the movie got acceptance. She notes, “I’m overwhelmed with the love and God’s grace. Lord I am so unworthy yet you chose to bless me so. ‘Love in Every Word’ has surpassed my expectations and I’m so grateful to you all. Love is all I have to give and what I always preach. Thank you for loving me. I love you all so much and I pray for you today that God will bless you beyond your wildest expectations. Amen.”

Produced by Omoni Oboli, the movie was written by Mfon-Abasi Micheal Inyang. Like many forward-thinking Nollywood producers, Omoni had embraced Youtube platform for film distribution, reaching viewers beyond traditional cinema halls.

The movie has received positive reviews, with many praising the chemistry between the lead actors.

How CP Disu Dismantled Manhole Criminal Cartel in FCT

Before the incumbent Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Olatunji Disu, assumed office, criminal gangs specialising in vandalising public infrastructures, particularly manhole covers in the Federal Capital Territory, operated unhindered.

This highly organised crime, which defaces the territory and causes health hazards, involves three identified groups of criminals and their collaborators.

The first group is a criminal syndicate often disguised as scavengers, popularly known in the territory as “babanbola.”

These criminal elements and unpatriotic individuals derive pleasure from defacing the city and causing health hazards to motorists and pedestrians in the territory by removing highly priced iron manhole covers under the cover of darkness.

They then move these critical components of the road infrastructure to Pantaker markets within the territory, where their collaborators and dishonest businessmen buy these vandalised infrastructure from them at a giveaway price, with the intention of making humongous profits from the vandalised and stolen public infrastructure.

These unpatriotic and dishonest businessmen, who operate as the second layer of collaborators, also sell these to companies dealing in steel, some of which are foreign companies that use these manhole covers to manufacture other steel products after buying them from these fraudulent businessmen.

These illicit enterprises of removing manhole covers for pecuniary benefits, notwithstanding their health implications and dangers to road users, continued unabated until the arrival of Olatunji Disu as the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command.

On assuming office, Disu vowed to put these criminal cartels out of business in the territory by denying them freedom of action, to stop criminality and restore peace and tranquility, and preventing accidents and other health hazards associated with the removal of manhole covers.

A resident of the territory, Daniel Akpan, narrated his harrowing experience with an uncovered manhole, recalling how he sustained severe injuries after falling into a manhole around the National Mosque while boarding a taxi to Area 3. According to him, “I was waiting for a taxi around the National Mosque with two other friends, and we were discussing political issues because it was during the electioneering year. When a taxi stopped for us to enter, my friends entered first, and as I wanted to enter the vehicle, one of my legs entered an uncovered manhole, and I lost my composure and fell into the manhole. I sustained serious injuries.”

On her part, Victoria Doshima said that she had fractured her left foot after stepping into a manhole while alighting

from a vehicle at Eagle Square. She explained how she had relocated to her village for six months to treat the fracture using local remedies.

“The pain I endured before I recovered from that injury was second to none,” she further recalled.

A civil servant, Solomon Eje, recalled how a tyre on his vehicle burst when he mistakenly drove into a manhole while trying to park to wait for a friend around the Gudu area.

These are in addition to other road hazards associated with the removal of manhole covers in the territory. It was on the premise of the foregoing that the Commissioner of Police, FCT, Olatunji Disu, deployed everything within his power, including technology, to track down these vandals and deny them freedom of action permanently in the FCT.

Addressing a press conference on the successes of the anti-vandalism operation, Disu explained, “We are pleased to highlight the outstanding accomplishments in our relentless efforts against the scourge of vandalism plaguing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

Disu averred that this insidious criminal activity not only undermines the very fabric of our society but

also poses significant threats to public safety, disrupts the provision of essential amenities, and jeopardises the integrity of the nation’s critical infrastructure.

He said: “Through the collective efforts of all security agencies, we have made substantial strides in combating this menace, and today’s achievements serve as a testament to our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of our citizens and protecting the vital assets that underpin our nation’s prosperity.”

On how the journey to ending the menace of vandalism started, he said: “In a bold move to tackle the menace of vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, on 13 January 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, convened a crucial FCT Core-Security Committee Meeting with heads of security agencies.

“This strategic gathering culminated in a joint task force with a directive ordering the immediate two-week closure of all scrap yards, commonly referred to as Pantaker markets, within the FCT”.

The temporary closure of these markets, he stated, was to dismantle the illicit trade in stolen infrastructure and scrap metals, protecting vital public assets and enhancing citizen safety.

Disu explained that, in alignment with this directive, the FCT Police Command and other sister security agencies initiated “Operation Sweep”, a decisive enforcement action targeting the vandalisation, destruction and illegal sale of critical infrastructure to Pantaker operators and other illicit buyers.

“A multi-agency task force, comprising sister security agencies within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), launched a series of targeted operations aimed at dismantling the illicit trade in stolen infrastructure and scrap metals,” he said.

These coordinated operations, the Commissioner added, focused on scrap yards, commonly known as Panteker markets, where scavengers, referred to as Baban Bola, engage in criminal activities.

He stressed that the task force aimed to displace, evacuate and demolish makeshift shanties and illegal structures, thereby disrupting the illicit trade and ensuring public safety.

He noted that the ongoing intensive enforcement operation, conducted both day and night, commenced on Thursday, 16 January 2025, and has yielded significant results so far.

He revealed that several major Pantaker markets were raided, including Dei-Dei, Kabusa, Dei-Dei Outward Lane, Zuba, Mpape, Jabi, Nyanya, Apo, Dutse Panteker Markets and Gwarinpa Scavengers’ Shanties.

How Nigeria, Others Can Leverage Cryptonomics to Overcome Debt, Achieve Sustainable Growth

In an age where financial systems are rapidly evolving, developing countries like Nigeria find themselves at a critical crossroads. Burdened by crippling national debts, stagnating economic growth, and inflationary pressures, these nations are increasingly looking for innovative solutions to break the cycle of dependency and rebuild their economies. One such promising avenue is CRYPTONOMICS, which is the intersection of cryptocurrency and economic policy. By harnessing the transformative power of decentralized finance (DeFi), blockchain technology, and digital currencies, developing nations can shift from traditional, debt-laden growth models to one that is sustainable, transparent, and inclusive. While the potential is immense, realizing it requires a strategic, multifaceted approach. This article explores how Nigeria, along with other developing nations, can capitalize on cryptonomics to reduce debt burdens, foster economic development, and pave the way toward a more resilient future.

The Current Debt Crisis: A Global Concern Developing nations, particularly those in

sub-Saharan Africa, are facing a debt crisis of alarming proportions. Nigeria’s national debt, for example, has skyrocketed over the past decade, now surpassing $100 billion. While debt financing may initially seem like a viable option for funding infrastructure and development projects, it has placed these countries in a precarious position, with large portions of national revenues devoted to servicing interest payments.

Coupled with inflation, political instability, and inadequate fiscal management, these debts constrain economic growth and exacerbate income inequality. Traditional financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank often offer loans with stringent conditions, such as austerity measures, which can stifle long-term growth.

The Promise of Cryptonomics

Cryptonomics, a term that blends cryptocurrency with economics, holds the potential to offer developing countries an alternative financial ecosystem that bypasses traditional, centralized financial systems. Here’s how it can help:

Debt Reduction through Digital Asset Monetisation

One of the most powerful tools at the

disposal of developing nations is the creation and monetization of digital assets. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or even national digital currencies (Central Bank Digital Currencies, or CBDCs) offer the possibility to generate new forms of wealth, independent of the traditional fiat system. By adopting blockchain technology, governments can tokenize national assets, such as natural resources, real estate, and even intellectual property. These tokenized assets can be sold or traded in global markets, generating new revenue streams to pay down national debt.

Nigeria, for example, could explore the tokenization of its vast oil reserves, creating a digital commodity that attracts foreign investors. These digital assets could potentially reduce reliance on external borrowing, offering an alternative revenue stream for debt servicing and development projects.

Decentralised Finance (DeFi) for Inclusive Financial Services

Traditional banking systems in developing countries often leave large portions of the population underserved, particularly in rural and remote areas. Cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms can address this by offering inclusive financial services, such as lending, borrowing, and

saving, without the need for intermediaries.

In countries like Nigeria, where financial inclusion remains a major challenge, DeFi provides a potential solution. With DeFi protocols, citizens can access credit markets, even if they lack a formal credit history or a traditional bank account. By embracing these technologies, governments can foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem that empowers small businesses and individuals to access capital, thus stimulating local economies and reducing dependency on foreign loans.

Currency Stabilisation and Inflation Control

One of the major drawbacks of many developing countries is the volatility of their local currencies. Inflation erodes purchasing power, while the value of the national currency can fluctuate wildly due to poor monetary policies. In contrast, stablecoins (cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets like the U.S. dollar) offer an opportunity for economic stabilization.

NNPC and Development of Local Content Capabilities

The Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act of 2010 mandates oil and gas companies operating in Nigeria to prioritise the use of locally sourced goods, services and manpower to increase Nigerian participation in the industry through the development of local capacity and create jobs in the country.

In a nutshell, the Act seeks to promote Nigerian workforce, local procurement and technology transfer. The sole goal of the Act is to maximize economic benefits for the country by ensuring that a larger share of the oil and gas industry revenue stays within the country through local investment and employment opportunities. Government established the Nigeria Local Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to monitor compliance and where necessary enforce penalties for non-adherence.

For clarity, the Act does not seek to exclude foreigners from participating in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, it, however, makes it mandatory for foreign companies seeking to carry out operations in the upstream sector to involve Nigerian(s) in the formation of the company. NNPC under the current leadership is fully committed to the realisation of the objectives for which the law was enacted.

Mele Kyari identifies local content as critical for development in the oil and gas sector and the country’s economic growth. His strong advocacy is in sync with the Presidential Directive on Local Content Compliance Requirements 2024 issued as an Executive Order by the current administration.

The order seeks to enhance local participation in the oil and gas industry by ensuring strict adherence to Nigerian compliance requirements in contracts and projects.

Based on Mele Kyari’s firm belief in the inherent possibilities and gains of the Act if fully implemented, he aligned NNPC with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) convinced that this adoption will grow indigenous participation in the sector’s value chain, enhance job creation, value creation and development of in-country capacities.

Kyari’s obsession with growing the local content in the oil and gas sector is well known and stem from his conviction that local content should not be seen as lip service given the huge volume involved in contracting Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) in Exploration Production for which a significant value is lost to the country. As a result of his commitment to arrest this drift, NNPC under his leadership continues to introduce strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of local firms and creating a sustainable energy future.

Under his guidance, NNPC threw its weight behind the Nigerian Content Intervention Fund (NCIF) to support local content development; the company also supported the development of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Parks Scheme (NOGaPS) to stimulate local manufacturing. He has guided

the restructuring of the NNPC Exploration and Production Ltd (NEPL) and the positioning of the NNPC Engineering and Technical Company LTD (NETCO) as a full-fledged engineering company. As a result of the concerted efforts and unwavering commitment of the current leadership of NNPCL, the local content in the country’s oil and gas sector has witnessed exponential surge, soaring from 26 per cent in 2017 to 54 per cent in 2022. In his current position, Kyari has continued to canvass for the prioritisation of local content as key element of national development strategy for the growth of the energy sector.

His considered position is that all the operators in the energy sector should, as a matter of policy, be directed to make local content a key policy in their operations. The Kyari doctrine is anchored on his belief that we have a shared responsibility to empower local firms and drive innovation to ensure a robust oil and gas sector that meets both local and global demands.

The race to unlock Nigeria’s abundant energy resources has intensified with fresh injection of strategic policy and regulatory frameworks. The Tinubu administration has established a dedicated Energy Office within the Presidency.

The office is saddled with the responsibility of designing and implementing reforms to position Nigeria as a leading global investment destination. Under Kyari’s leadership, NNPC continues to play a critical role in Nigeria’s local content drive in enforcing NOGICD Act by monitoring compliance. The company as current leadership demands, actively supports the development of local capabilities by facilitating training programmes for Nigerian personnel within its workforce. This has enabled

them to acquire requisite skills needed for technical roles within the industry.

The establishment of Nigerian Content Division within its structure underscores its unwavering commitment to the promotion and entrenchment of local content in the oil and gas sector.

Pursuant to this commitment, NNPC has continued to issue directives to industry stakeholders to comply with the letter and spirit of the Act. Kyari has forged a close working relationship with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to enforce compliance. On policy enforcement, NNPC is actively enforcing the NOGICD Act to ensure that players within the industry meet local content targets regarding procurement, manpower development and technology transfer.

The current management of NNPC led by Mele Kyari has been unwavering in forging strong partnerships with indigenous companies. Over the years, Kyari’s strong advocacy has seen the support of NNPC for local content suppliers in pipeline coating, fabrication and maintenance projects. The transformation of the company into a commercially driven entity has opened up new opportunities to further deepen and expand existing partnerships in the area of gas infrastructure pivotal for the country’s ongoing quest for energy transition.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), one of the subsidiaries of NNPC has continued to play a significant role in streamlining regulatory compliance processes. The organisation is providing a clear framework for standards and best practices. The measures in place have ensured that local players operate with greater confidence. The emphasis on creating a level playing field for indigenous players has enhanced the ability of indigenous companies to play in upstream projects especially pipeline protection, coating and fabrication.

The Nigerian Local Content Act in the oil and gas sector has been beneficial to local companies and has allowed them to secure contracts; it has also fostered a mutually beneficial relationship between international and local companies. The local content in the oil and gas sector stood at 54 per cent as of 2022; going by projections by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), this figure will rise to 70 percent by 2027.

The achievement of this lofty objective will require enduring partnership among critical stakeholders in the oil and gas sector. NNPC is fully committed to the promotion of local content in the energy sector and has been exemplary in leading the charge. With the pace of the existing collaboration and the determination of the current administration, there are strong indications that the objective(s) for which the Act was given birth to will be achieved in not too distant time.

TARABA STATE: A REBIRTH IN THE MAKING

right team spirit.

That retreat emphasized the primacy of public policy as a tool for the developmental blue-print of Taraba State through a wholeof-government approach. It spelt out the import, impact and value of accountability, transparency, good governance and efficient budget process as drivers of sustainable economic growth.

This way of onboarding government officials and stakeholders, on the importance and necessity to pursue excellence and good governance in Taraba State, was the grand takeoff plan of the newly elected governor.

He told them, at the retreat, that he was poised to transform the poor economic and social indices of the State so as to promote all round growth and development and wealth creation. He also emphasized the fact that he would prioritize security, because peace and prosperity for the people could only be achieved in an environment with meaningful security for life and property.

A former Vice President of the World Bank was among the resource persons. When, back thenbar the retreat in 2003, I spoke to them on “Building a New Generation of Public Sector Leaders in Taraba Through Leadership Mentoring, Emotional Intelligence and Strategic Management of Human Relations”, my emphasis was on the importance of humanizing governance, while keeping to best global practices.

The governor identified the key drivers of the Taraba State he had in view included improvements in education, health, industry, agriculture, mining, tourism and much more. The newly elected governor also placed significant emphasis on attracting FDIs and promoting MSMEs for broadspectrum prosperity. He used the occasion to present his vision for the State, the pillars of his government and the philosophy of his administration, as he charged everyone to translate the vision into better life for the people.

Less than two years into his tenure, the question you sometimes here is: “So, what was Taraba State before this your new governor? It is very much like the case of Jigawa State during and after the tenure of Sule Lamido as Governor.

Every meaningful state

infrastructure, far reaching development plans, new ideas about human capital development, internally generated revenue gains and much more in Taraba today have acquired new flagella under the incumbent governor.

Today, Taraba State has a human capital development resource centre, patterned to some extent after NARC in its aspiration, to drill down sustainable knowledge growth in an all-round manner. To that extent, the state is turning into a reference template for far-seeing steps in social development, economic growth, responsible environmental stewardship and new vistas of responsible leadership.

The indices are reassuring on all fronts, but the state government is fighting great retrogressive forces as it prioritizes the welfare of its citizens. It projects are broadly impactful, with policies on social stability and internal security on the upswing. The provision of operation vehicles for the military and security forces, especially also the provision of surveillance drone facility to support the army and other national security forces working in the area, are landmark gains.

While it is true that the state has made massive investments in road construction projects, this is not at the expense of healthcare facilities and healthcare personnel. Educational institutions are getting the desired attention, with a new focus on connecting communities with enhanced access to essential services.

Taraba that is often referred to as the “Nature’s Gift to the Nation” now seema to be everaging its fertile land to boost agricultural productivity and be true to this appellation. It has a new Green Taraba Project, which has empowered farmers, reduced food insecurity, and created thousands of jobs.

Add that to the state government’s upgrading of hospitals, the provision of free medical services for vulnerable groups, and the implementation of robust healthcare policies. And the state is not resting on a bed of borrowed funds, having made significant strides in boosting its internally generated revenue. This has dramatically reduced reliance on federal allocations.

Much of this was achieved through

tax reforms that streamlined tax collection processes and leveraged technology to minimize leakages; even as the state is harnessing its agricultural potentials to attract investors and generate revenue.

Taraba State is collaborating with private sector players and consultants to unlock new revenue streams, and these efforts have increased the state’s IGR and also created a more resilient and self-sufficient economy. The revenue collection records show a 54% increase between 2023 and 2024; and the Taraba State Internal Revenue Service (TIRS) team was only inaugurated in June 2024. The IGR jumped from about 10 billion Naira to over 17 billion within months, after inauguration.

On environmental sustainability, the state is adopting a global model for environmental conservation. A place that is known for its lush greenery, wildlife, and natural resources is now implementing groundbreaking initiatives to protect itself in very important ways. This includes reforestation programmes, involving large-scale tree planting campaigns, to combat deforestation and climate change.

The state’s Eco-Tourism Development programme is sustainable tourism, as it seeks preserves the natural beauty of the environment while creating economic opportunities. And this has seamlessly keyed into a waste management systems that is using modern waste disposal techniques to keep cities clean and green.

As for the Resource Centre and deliverables, its purpose is to empower Citizens Through Knowledge. The knowledge impartation resource centers have revolutionized access to capacity building opportunities, information availability and continuous education.

For the record, these centers serve as hubs for skill acquisition, to offer training programs in ICT, entrepreneurship, and vocational skills. There is also the matter of research and development, to provide resources for students, researchers, and innovators to drive local solutions to global challenges.

As part of community engagement for social cohesion, the hosting workshops and seminars has become a regular means of educating citizens on governance, health, and economic

HOW NOT TO KILL BUSINESSES OPERATING OUTSIDE FREE TRADE ZONES

thereby lowering their operational cost. Presently, most of the companies operating in FTZs in Nigeria have a significant foreign interests.

Regrettably, findings have shown that some companies operating within these zones flout the rules guiding their operations. Some of those who operate in the free trade zone that ought to focus on exporting their finished goods, end up selling them in the local market, thereby denying the government the necessary revenue. Besides, this creates unfair competition and unfair trade in the market place.

For instance, manufacturers who operate outside the FTZs that import raw materials for their production are charged Customs duties which range (from)REMOVE between 10 percent and 25 percent, depending on the item they are bringing into the country. After this, they bear the cost of production associated with the country’s harsh business environment before processing

these raw materials into finished goods and they are sold to the market. For those who are into export business, they are made to pay the relevant duties and levies. However, those that have their plants located within the FTZs, when they bring in their raw materials, they don’t pay duties on the assumption that whatever they produce would be exported 100 per cent.

Therefore, after production, if they then decide to move their goods to the Customs areas, they ought to pay duties on the finished items. But unfortunately, due to alleged lapses and corruption on the part pf some regulators, these manufacturers now bring in their raw materials, process them, and instead of exporting these finished items as expected, they end up selling their products in the country.

What this does is beyond the loss of revenue to the government and the denial of the country the expected forex inflows, it also creates unfair trade

opportunities.

Because Taraba State is endowed with vast mineral resources, including limestone, kaolin, and gemstones, the government is taking strategic steps to harness this potential, through some Mining Sector Reforms. These reforms are creating the enabling environment for investors, while ensuring sustainable mining practices. Jobs are also being created in the process, as more hands are engaged in the overall value chain.

All things considered, the state in now deep into the serious business of economic diversification, by leveraging its mineral wealth to boost the economy and fund developmental projects. And security in important for all of this to happen.

There is Community Policing, which is engaging local communities in security efforts to foster trust and collaboration. The stare government is providing modern equipment and training for security agencies, in addition to Conflict Resolution Mechanisms; implementing programs to address communal clashes and promote unity.

Therw is also the Taxpayer Education Initiative, for willing compliance, through a proactive approach to taxpayer education. This is helping yhe citizenry to understand the importance of taxation in nationbuilding. The state is embarking on awareness campaigns, using radio, television, and social media, to educate taxpayers on their rights and civic responsibilities.

Simplified Tax Processes have also become a tool for making it easier for individuals and businesses to comply with tax regulations. Added to the foregoing are transparency and accountability parameters, which are seen in the governemnt’s open demonstration of how tax revenues are utilized. This further fosterer trust and willingness to pay.

In sum, Taraba State is doing well today, but it must avoid any premature celebrations. Good governance is always a work in progress. The state must remain forward looking, as it expands the frontiers of impact in every positive sphere. The retrogressive forces that have held the state down for so long are not resting. Therefore, the progressive forces of today should endeavour to stay awake 25 (not 24) hours every day. enought said.

to those manufacturers that are not fortunate enough to site their plants within the FTZs. This act is enough to throw them out of business.

Indeed, this is unfair (for)TO businesses trying to create jobs, most who pledge substantial part of their property and resources as collateral just to get bank loans at cut-throat interest rates and THEN some disingenuous people work round the clock to make these loans go bad because they are allowed to sell their products at cheaper price due to their low production cost. This clearly stifles innovation and undermines business growth as these struggling businesses are systematically being discouraged.

The federal government needs to take action to guarantee the continuous survival of businesses outside the FTZs by ensuring that operators abide by the rules of the game to save jobs.

Beyond the lamentation by the Customs CG, Adeniyi, there is also

a need for increased supervision and monitoring by the NCS and other government agencies saddled with the responsibility of ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and compliance by those operating within the FTZs. Besides, some of these challenges can be dealt with through the use of technology tracking devices. The Federal Ministry of Trade and its counterpart, the Federal Ministry of Finance should deploy technological devices to track the importation of raw materials and follow through till they are processed into finished goods and exported, to address inefficiency and laziness on the part of some of the regulatory agencies and eliminate corruption. The choice is clear: It is either the government protects these businesses outside the FTZs or watch them vanish. We cannot afford to let these economic saboteurs thrive. Therefore, its time to defend our entrepreneurs in order to build a truly resilient Nigerian economy.

CBN’s Push for Thriving Creative Industry

The Central Bank of Nigeria in collaboration with the bankers’ committee is transforming the National Arts Theatre to position the creative industry as a major economic driver and to promote tourism. Nume Ekeghe writes on how this initiative aims to unlock the sector’s $25 billion potential and boost Nigeria’s economic growth

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has described the revitalisation of the National Arts Theatre as a transformative initiative poised to unlock Nigeria’s creative sector’s estimated $25 billion potential.

The project, executed in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee and private stakeholders, aims to reposition the creative industry as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic expansion.

During a recent inspection of the renovation efforts in Lagos, Cardoso highlighted the initiative’s significance, stating that beyond restoring a historic monument, it would catalyse job creation, attract investment, and substantially enhance Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“It is estimated that the creative sector can potentially generate about $25 billion, and this, to my mind, will be a great catalyst for that to happen. As this unfolds, it will drive prosperity not just for creatives but for all Nigerians. It will also serve as a powerful signal for collaboration. Once a project of this scale succeeds, others will take a cue,” Cardoso asserted.

National Theatre’s Role in Cultural Growth

Cardoso lauded the Bankers’ Committee for its commitment to seeing the project through, emphasising that the facility represents more than just an architectural landmark, but embodies Nigeria’s cultural identity.

“This is not just an edifice; it represents our history and culture. The transformation of this landmark into a world-class facility is a testament to the Nigerian spirit. If you took people from here and placed them in top-tier arts venues globally, they would feel at home,” he said.

He recalled the theatre’s golden years, particularly its prominence in hosting FESTAC 77, an international festival that celebrated African arts. However, decades of neglect led to its deterioration.

“As a Lagosian, I grew up here. I saw this in

1977 when we had FESTAC, and over the years, it was a hub for cultural and artistic expression. Unfortunately, due to lack of maintenance, this iconic structure fell into a state of disrepair,” he added.

He noted that the ongoing transformation reflects Nigeria’s resilience and commitment to preserving its artistic heritage. Beyond the physical infrastructure, the project is being developed to meet global standards, positioning it as a competitive venue for international creative engagement.

CBN’s Strategic Vision for the Creative Industry

Nigeria’s creative economy has long been acknowledged as a high-potential sector, yet it has been constrained by structural challenges, including inadequate investment, weak infrastructure, and limited financing access. The CBN’s intervention seeks to address these hurdles, fostering an environment where creativity can thrive as a

sustainable economic driver.

Under this initiative, the National Theatre will serve as a hub for multiple creative disciplines, including film, music, fashion, digital arts, animation, and gaming.

The project is part of a broader plan to integrate Lagos into the global creative economy while establishing Nigeria as a premier destination for cultural tourism and investment.

He said: “As the creative industry thrives, so will the prosperity of not just those directly involved but all Nigerians. This development sends a powerful signal about the possibilities that exist when vision, investment, and commitment align.”

Economic Impact: From Creativity to Revenue Growth

Globally, the creative industry is a significant economic engine. In developed economies such as the United States and the United Kingdom, the sector contributes billions to GDP, creates millions of

jobs, and serves as a major foreign exchange earner. Nigeria’s burgeoning film, music, and arts industries possess similar potential, but infrastructure and funding constraints have hindered their scalability.

The CBN, in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee, envisions the National Theatre as a launchpad for developing ancillary industries that will support creative professionals. From financing structures, the project aims to cultivate a robust ecosystem enabling artists and entrepreneurs to monetise their talents effectively.

Creating Jobs, Opportunities for Youth

One of Nigeria’s most pressing economic challenges is youth unemployment. The revitalisation of the National Theatre is projected to create thousands of jobs both directly and indirectly spanning production, marketing, content creation, event management, and tourism.

By fostering a structured creative ecosystem, the initiative will help develop local talent, attract global investors, and establish career pathways for young Nigerians aspiring to make their mark in the creative space.

Expanding Financial Access for Creative Entrepreneurs

Access to financing remains a significant challenge for creative entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Unlike traditional industries, creative ventures often lack tangible assets that banks require as collateral for loans. Recognising this gap, the CBN is collaborating with financial institutions to develop funding mechanisms specifically tailored for the sector.

Several Nigerian banks have already launched initiatives to support the creative sector.

For instance, GTBank’s Creative Industry Financing Initiative provides loans of up to N500 million for entrepreneurs in fashion, music, film production, and IT. Access Bank offers the Creative Sector Loan, focusing on capacity building and employment creation in film, fashion, music, and software engineering.

As Sanwo-Olu Unveils Africa’s First AI Feature Film, Makemation

Last Sunday, all gates leading to the State House, Marina, the official residence of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, were thrown open to invited guests for the unveiling of first shot Artificial Intelligence-based movie, Makemation.

It was not by any accident that the organisers of the event chose State House, Marina, as venue of the unveiling of Makemation. The venue, apart from being a cherished national monument, is also rich in history as it served as the official residence of Lord Lugard, where important pre and post colonial decisions were taken which culminated to Nigeria’s political independence in 1960.

Security was tight, as all guests were first cleared from the security post within the car park before they ushered into the governor’s official residence. The second security check took place at the entrance leading to the Multi-Purpose Hall inaugurated in 2013 by former Governor Raji Fashola, venue of the unveiling.

Before the event kicked off on Sunday evening, Sanwo-Olu, who is a big promoter of arts, culture, tourism and creative industry, arrived in a Coaster bus with his family members after other official engagements, dashed into his official residence, refreshed and changed his clothes to a simple white lace attire with his trademark native cap of many colours fitting well on his head.

The entire hall was filled to capacity. Apart from cameramen who were allowed to set their gadgets, other invited journalists who arrived early but couldn’t gain entrance were later allowed to cover event standing.

The atmosphere in the hall was that of suspense as guests were eager to see Africa’s first feature film that spotlights the fast-rising impact of its youths mainly girls, showcasing how they leverage artificial intelligence and technological

Goernor Sanwo-Olu (middle) at the unveiling of Makemation at State House, Marina, Lagos innovations to tackle some of Africa’s most pressing challenges. The AI-based movie is an emotional, thought-provoking, and humorous dive into the life of a young girl from a low-income community in Lagos, showing how her journey was fraught with twists and turns, despite the hardships, she is brilliant, determined, and unstoppable.

The film merges entertainment with a universal

theme of hope, highlighting how innovation can catalyse change—transforming poverty from an enduring issue into a challenge of the past.

Some parts of Makemation were later showed to guests, just tip of an iceberg of what people should be looking out for.

The governor who was accompanied by his dutiful wife, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, charged young people to come up with their projects, pledging to support them the way he supported Toyosi AkereleOgunlusi, Creator and Producer of Makemation.

An elated Sanwo-Olu said, “In this very hall, you get to meet some of your favourite actors. Some of you have contributed your time and money to this industry. Young and old collaborating together to build the creative sector.

“Lagos Colony has been in existence before creation of Nigeria. Today, you are on ground that has a lot history. I’m happy and truly excited that you can put this together- power of a vision. We need

“The future is now. Our role is to be an enabler, create the channel and you fly with it. It’s a Lagos success, not individual success.

“We have consistently prioritised the growth of our creative industry and believe that fostering creativity and innovation is crucial for our state’s development.

“By supporting initiatives like this, we aim to promote our talented filmmakers and artists while showcasing technology’s immense potential in storytelling.

“Together, we are building a vibrant creative ecosystem that entertains, drives economic growth, and positions Lagos as a leading hub for the arts in Africa.”

Sanwo-Olu, who described the creative industry as a game-changer said, “we want to catch up with the rest of the world. We don’t have any excuse; the world is a single village. There’s a plan to ensure that we do big things.”

On the issue of Lagos not having campuses that can accommodate 30,000 as they have in India and other places, Sanwo-Olu said, “There’re plans to create campuses with big and massive hubs. We need to move outside Lagos to accommodate a lot of Creatives. We are serious about it.”

He emphasised that the idea is to take AI “to our schools to grow them organically,” adding that the creative industry “is the most creative and employs a lot of people.”

The governor announced that Makemation will be in cinemas across Nigeria starting from April 18, 2025. “We are supporting this idea and innovation. It’s not limited to one person,” he noted.

China, Nigeria Partner to Boost Tourism, Cultural Sectors

Nigeria and China are set to collaborate on a groundbreaking partnership to boost the tourism and creative sectors.

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, HE Yu Dunhai, met with the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja on Tuesday,

to discuss the opportunities for collaboration.

The Chinese ambassador highlighted numerous areas of untapped opportunities which will be of economic benefit to both countries including partnerships on training and capacity building, as well as offline and online training programs to enhance tourism promotion.

“China would like to explore opportunities for cultural exchange, allowing Nigerian artistes to tap into the Chinese market, where there is a growing demand for Nigerian music.

“We are committed to strengthening ties between our two nations in various areas of interest. I believe that this partnership will unlock new opportunities for growth, innovation, and cultural exchange, and I look forward to working together to make it a success.”

Victor Boniface e nglish Giants’ Beautiful Bride

After his failed move to SaudiArabian side,Al Nassr,in the winter,Super Eagles striker,Victor Boniface’s romance with German side,Bayer Leverkusen may be ending in the coming summer transfer window. The German Bundesliga champions have brought down the Nigerian’s price tag from €70 million to €50 and top Premier League clubs-Arsenal,Chelsea and Newcastle are already queuing to cash in

According to reports from German publication, Sport Bild, Bayer Leverkusen has lowered their asking price for Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface as they are looking to sell him in the summer.

In the January transfer window, Boniface was close to moving to Al-Nassr for €70m before the Saudi Arabian side performed a u-turn and opted to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran instead.

At the start of the season, Boniface was a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s attack, but an injury sustained while on international duty with the Super Eagles paved the way for Patrik Schick to take his place in the starting lineup.

With Schick thriving, Boniface has been limited to just one start in 2025.

The 24-year-old is visibly frustrated, even getting into an on-field dispute with club mate, Emiliano Buendía in the 4-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt. His behaviour has raised concerns within the club, as Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly unhappy with his open display of frustration.

Since then, Boniface has been relegated to the bench and with just two goals after his failed move, he has struggled to perform when called upon.

Heading into next season, Leverkusen do not want to have Boniface on the books and all the signs point towards them selling the Nigerian.

Die Werkself will ask for a fee of around €50m for Boniface, and the idea of having to sell one big player this summer will then be met with the striker’s departure.

Meanwhile, several Premier League clubs have been linked to Boniface’s signature.

Added firepower is a crucial aim for Chelsea in the summer transfer window and the Blues are reportedly honing their options.

Despite possible competition from Premier League rivals, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United, the Blues are determined to upgrade Coach Enzo Maresca’s attack.

Chelsea have turned their attentions to Bayer Leverkusen’s striker, Boniface and “are doing whatever it takes to win the race” according to reporting by CaughtOffside.

The 24-year-old Nigerian international, Boniface arrived in Europe with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in 2019 before spending a single season in Belgium with Union Saint-Gilloise.

Boniface signed for Leverkusen in 2023 and scored 14 goals in 18 starts, as Xabi Alonso steered them to an incredible Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last season.

He’s added seven more league goals this term, as well as another in the Champions League against AC Milan.

Despite sitting fourth in the Premier League, the Blues’ need for a scorer is clear.

Nicolas Jackson has scored nine times in the Premier League this season but

reliably

With Nkunku not firing and Cole Palmer struggling for form in front of

goal, Chelsea’s need to strengthen has been exposed.

“Chelsea are increasingly moving towards Boniface as a top priority target ahead of next season, so they’ll hope they can remain at the front of the queue for his signature,” reports CaughtOffside.

That queue apparently comprises Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle.

While Chelsea intend to fend off attention from elsewhere, interest in Boniface from their Premier League rivals makes just as much sense.

Manchester Utd are getting precious little return from their meagre centre forward options and will look to back Coach Ruben Amorim in the summer. Arsenal’s woes up front have been picked over repeatedly since Kai Havertz joined Gabriel Jesus in the treatment room.

Newcastle’s situation is different. Alexander Isak is by many measures the most effective striker in the Premier League.

If the Magpies finish in a Champions League spot, they should be able to hold on to their key man. If not, the interest from elsewhere will be constant and widespread. Arsenal in particular have been frequently linked with a move for Isak in the past.

Boniface’s contract runs to the summer of 2028 but he would come at a lower cost than Isak, for whom Newcastle will fight tooth and nail.

If the Gunners decide to cut out a step and go straight for the Nigerian, it’s likely they’ll find Chelsea standing in their path.

Despite Boniface’s limited playing opportunities in recent months, he has been named in Nigeria’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Chelsea are understandably attracted by that level of production.
isn’t
prolific. He’s also injured, leaving Maresca with Christopher Nkunku as his only recognised centre forward.

Osimhen Shares Conversation with Chelle Ahead of WCQs, Says Malian is Very Demanding

Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen has shared his conversation with Nigeria’s new national team manager, Eric Chelle, ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in a recent interview on the Obi One podcast.

When asked about his relationship with Chelle, Osimhen confirmed that the two had spoken, noting, “We spoke, I think last week.”

The forward revealed that the conversation took place

alongside Chelle’s assistant, where the new coach outlined his vision for the team. Reflecting on Chelle’s coaching style, Osimhen mentioned, “I know him from the previous AFCON and what he’s done with Mali. He’s a coach that loves to play.”

Osimhen also revealed Chelle’s expectations for the Super Eagles, particularly his demanding nature.

“He’s going to be very, very demanding,” Osimhen said, explaining that Chelle stressed the importance of hard work

and discipline.

“Everybody should lace their boots up, get ready,” Osimhen continued. ”He said, ‘Victor, listen, you and other guys that I have called, I need you guys to come hand in hand with me to work to achieve amazing things for Nigeria.”

The forward highlighted Chelle’s commitment to excellence, saying that the coach had made it clear that only those who fight for every ball and show full commitment would make the squad.

Anthony Joshua Gets Chance to Redeem Self Against Dubois

Anthony Joshua could redeem himself from last year’s defeat to Daniel Dubois. The British boxer was knocked out by ‘DDD’ at Wembley in their IBF heavyweight title fight in September. However, recent events suggest that a rematch may be on the cards.

Dubois had been eyeing a bout with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title following his latest victory, but first had to defeat Joseph Parker last month. Unfortunately, Dubois had

to withdraw from his first title defence at the Kingdom Arena during fight week. This left Parker to obliterate last-minute replacement Martin Bakole, ending the match in the second round. Although Dubois kept his title due to his withdrawal, he has seemingly lost his chance to fight Usyk – with Parker now set to face the undefeated Ukrainian.

As Parker is currently the WBO’s interim heavyweight champion, the organisation has demanded that Usyk agree to a

mandatory defence of his own title within 30 days before they initiate purse bid proceedings, reports the Mirror US. Meanwhile, Usyk, who claimed a split-decision victory over Tyson Fury at Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Arena last May to become undisputed heavyweight champion, may opt to delay his quest to secure that title a second time. Arsenal vs Chelsea, Fulham vs Spurs Live on Showmax

Title-chasing Arsenal will, tomorrow, host London rivals, Chelsea, in a Premier League clash of huge importance to both teams. The match, which kicks off at 2.30 pm, is available for live streaming on Showmax. Second-placed Arsenal, who trail league leaders, Liverpool, by a whopping 15 points, are convinced that they still can win the Premier League title despite the recent indifferent form.

A victory over Chelsea would narrow the gap between them and Liverpool, who do not play in the Premier League until April, to 12 points. Anything short of

that is a further erosion of their already slender chances of the title.

Another London derby is available tomorrow when Fulham host Tottenham Hotspur at 2.30 pm. Today, Premier League defending champions, Manchester City, host the fearless Brighton, who have caused headaches for bigger teams this season under coach Fabian Hürzeler. The match is available for live streaming at 4pm.

Also available for live streaming at the same time are games between relegation candidates, Ipswich and

implausibly third-placed Nottingham Forest; Southampton at home to Wolves as well as rejuvenated Everton at home to West Ham. The day’s diet of live games comes to an end with the impressive Andoni Iraola-managed Bournemouth hosting Thomas Frank’s often resilient Brentford side. NBA Nigeria Hosts Second Jr Elite Camp in Lagos

NBA Nigeria hosted its second Jr. NBA Elite Camp for 40 boys and girls ages 16 and under in Lagos, last Saturday at the University of Lagos, coinciding with the International Women’s Day.

As part of the league’s commitment to helping grow the broader basketball ecosystem in Nigeria and making the game more accessible across the country, the camp highlighted NBA Nigeria’s initiatives in building the player pipeline of youth from grassroots to elite development.

Teenage fencing sensation, Peluola Akinbamiro has described her debut at the recently concluded 2025 African Junior Fencing Championships as a valuable learning experience in her quest to compete at the Olympic Games.

The US-based 13-year-old fencer participated in the continental tournament to gain experience and prepare for the 2025 World Junior Fencing Championship in China from April 7 to 15, as well as the Senior African Championship

The one-day camp saw the participation of 20 boys and 20 girls, and featured a life skills session with NBA Africa Vice President and NBA Country Head, Gbemisola Abudu and a series of skills development sessions and in-game simulations.

The second edition of the camp builds on the success of the first edition held last July, which occurred concurrently with the U.S. President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement’s first visit to Nigeria. The then two-day

An excited Akinbamiro said, “I did not feel any pressure in my debut for Nigeria at the African Junior Championships. My goal was to do my best for my country and myself. The tournament was challenging, and looking ahead to the event in China, I am determined to avoid repeating the mistakes I made here. Malami to Obasanjo

“It is only reasonable to provide adequate particulars where allegations of corruption are made. He gives what? How much was given? Who are the facilitators of bribe-taking? Through what medium was the bribe given? What date and time, among other details, are always necessary to ground reasonable suspicion” – The immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, denies allegation of corruption leveled against him by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Taraba State: A Rebirth in the Making

In these days of questionable public discourse on governance, any attempt to speak of tolerably good performance by a state governor will attract suspicion. It will either be that the governor has procured platforms to nurse a presidential ambition, or that he is working to hoodwink the public despite his obvious poor performance.

The other sad feature of some media commentary on public office holders is that it sometimes presents government interventions as favours by the governor; for which the people must thank him profusely. Service delivery, for which the governor was elected in the first place, then gets presented and projected to the public as acts of benevolence. At the end of the day, state resources are seen, and treated, as the personal resources of the governor to be dispensed at his discretion. Absurd!

But here we are, about to talk about a serving governor whose first series

GovKefas

of actions culminated in a Masterclass for would-be state officials before he began to govern. Yes. The first thing the current governor

of Taraba State did after he emerged victorious in the elections was to patiently scrutinize the human capital of his state, and then and make some key appointments. After the appointments, rather than say, “Alright, now report at your respective offices and start work”, he planned a capacity development immersion. The programme was held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), with every key official of the future Taraba State in the governor’s mind assembled in one location. His reason for doing this was quite simple: Dr. Agbu Kefas told his people that there is always a right and wrong way of doing everything. That being the case, he maintained that the only way to work as a government official in a 21st Century world was to give every worker the ideas and template for his specific schedule before he starts work. So, he gathered his people but not for motivational talk, boring lectures

Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) contribute to improved living standards, bring about substantial local capital formation and achieve a high level of productivity. They have also been identified as a vehicle for employment generation, as they provide opportunities for entrepreneurial training and manpower development.

Also of importance in any nation are indigenous enterprises because they offer huge opportunity for both cultural preservation and economic progress. Resilience, creativity, and the incorporation of cultural values into corporate operations are frequently linked to their success. All over the world, governments take deliberate steps to make sure that SMEs are nurtured.

This is why a recent revelation by the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, that companies operating in

the nation’s Free Trade Zones (FTZs) violate the law regulating their operations is deeply troubling.

According to Adeniyi, who disclosed this at a recent House of Representatives public hearing on the tax reform bills in Abuja, some of the companies operating in the FTZs go into Customs areas where extant tax laws are operational to conduct their businesses.

He said, “The sticky issue over the years has been the compliance of free trade zone operators with the provisions of the law. The law allows them to import every manufacturing input they need, 100 per cent sometimes, including things that are prohibited into the customs territory.

“In fact, a lot of those incentives were given to them to manufacture. However, the initial incentives were for them to export everything that they (imported OR MANUFACTURED?) inside this free zone. But from time to time, I think they

started to develop loan proofs for the local markets. There have been reported violations of these provisions.”

In Nigeria, FTZs, also known as

and an excuse for collecting Duty Tour allowance (DTA), no! it was for them to get Actionable Ideas for hands-on performance, in order to serve the best interests of the people of Taraba State who elected him into office.

He called it an induction course and retreat. It was organized for commissioners, special advisers, permanent secretaries, senior directors, legislators and judicial officers. The aim was to help everyone to fully understand respective roles and responsibilities in the State governance process. It was to also equip newly appointed cabinet members with the basic skills and knowledge they need to engender true service delivery for Taraba people. It was all designed to help create synergy and ensure that the executive, civil service, legislature, judiciary and other key stakeholders work together with the

Export Processing Zones (EPZs) are geographically designated areas that offer special privileges to businesses, including tax benefits and reduced customs regulations for activities like importing, manufacturing and exporting goods. FTZs in the country include the Calabar Free Trade Zone, Kano Free Trade Zone, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Ladol Logistic Free Zone, Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone, and Snake Island Integrated Free Zone. These zones were created to support the development of industries focused on exports and also to encourage businesses to operate with as low government interference as possible.

The primary purpose is to assist companies in the manufacturing, processing, and export of goods from Nigeria as they are exempted from payment of import and export duties
