Recapitalisation: Analysts foresee mergers of tier-2 banks
Nume Ekeghe in Lagos and Juliet Akoje in Abuja
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, yesterday, said the apex bank's staff who left service in December last
year initiated their voluntary disengagement with payment of full benefits.
Cardoso, who said this during the resumed investigative hearing to probe the disengagement of the 1,000 workers and how the N50 billion
terminal benefits was arrived at for them, noted that the 1,000 members of staff who were disengaged were not forced to quit.
This emerged as analysts yesterday predicted a wave of mergers among the tier-2 banks as more financial
institutions take steps to beat the recapitalisation directive of the CBN.
The investigative hearing to probe the disengagement of the 1,000 staff of the apex bank was held at the instance of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee
to probe the matter, chaired by Hon. Usman Bello Kumo.
The CBN Governor who was represented by the Deputy Director Corporate Service, Mr. Bala Bello, stated that the issue of the early exit programme and the restructuring
as well as reorganisation was to optimise the bank for enhanced efficiency.
He said: "They are ways and means through which the

Wike to Rivers Elders: I Will Not Apologise to Odili
The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike yesterday stressed that he would not tender an apology to former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili over recent negative remarks he made against the elder statesman. The FCT Minister said this at a luncheon he organised for his political associates and stakeholders at his residence in Port Harcourt.
Wike was reacting to a call earlier yesterday, by some elders in Rivers State, under the aegis of Concerned Elders of Rivers State for him to tender an unreserved apology to Odili, following his recent derogatory remarks against the founder of PAMO University of Medical Sciences.
Wike, once more, alleged that Odili switched an appointment meant for his

nephew to his daughter, maintaining that it was the elder statesman that had converted the State to his personal estate, describing Odili as a “Bishop.”
He said: "They said I should apologise for what? There is no law that says their daughter should not take up appointment, I agree. But I said as an elder statesman, you should not have given what belongs to your nephew to your daughter. Did I say that there is a law that said that your daughter should not be something?
performance of an organisation is optimised by putting, ensuring that round pegs are put in right holes. The manpower requirement of the bank is met. The man-loading, which is the key responsibilities, key performance indicators of the bank, vis-a-vis the number of people driving the performance of that bank, is at a level where it's optimum, balancing the human resource requirement, the capital requirement, the skills requirement, as well as the IT requirement of the bank.
"You are very much aware, Chairman, the entire world is going through a process of digitising its operations. And then once that is done, a lot of opportunities are created, just like a lot of redundancies are also equally created. And you have had instances in which, in the past, the request for staff to actually exit the bank voluntarily actually emanated on the part of the staff. And I believe the central bank is not necessarily the first organisation to have done that. I'm very happy to mention, Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, that the early exit programme of the Central Bank is 100 per cent voluntary.
“It's not mandatory. Nobody has been asked to leave, and nobody has been forced to leave. It's a completely voluntary programme that has been put in place. I believe several organisations across the world, and even within this country, both in terms of the private sector and the public sector, are undertaking similar exercises.
“So nobody has been asked to leave. But people who are based on popular demand, I have to be humble, with a lot of humility, to tell you that this same programme that is taking place is not at the instance of the bank itself."
He further said, "Of course, we have our challenges, and we know where we want to take the bank to. That's Cardoso and his team, myself included. But this popular request came from the staff. In the past, you have had instances in which cases of stagnation and lack of career progression appear. I mean, in an organisation, you've got a pyramid where from each level to the next level, you know, the gap keeps narrowing. If not, you are going to have a quasi-organisation, inverted pyramid.
“It doesn't work. It gets to the level where you have, for example, 30 departments in the central bank. You cannot have 60 directors, manning 30 departments. It's not going to work. So, once those vacancies are filled, it gets to a level where some people, even though they are very qualified, are very able, and they are very willing, but the vacancies are not there. And then they got to a level where they stagnated for a period of time.
"There are several instances in which similar exercise took place in the central bank, which has happened several times. This is not the first time. It's not the second time. It's not the third time. It's several times. You've had instances in which people at the top request that, look, it's going to take me X number
of the majority he would need to retain his job in an hour-long roll-call vote, but two Republican opponents switched their votes to support him after more than half an hour of negotiations. He won re-election with 218 votes – the minimum number needed.
Republicans control the chamber by a razor-thin 219-215 majority, according to Reuters.
“But you said somebody is converting Rivers State to his personal estate. It is not correct. The man who is converting Rivers state to personal estate is you (Odili) and to crown it up, you are now the general overseer.
“I didn’t say anything wrong, so you cannot kill me for what I didn’t say. They said Tinubu should be careful with somebody like me. Tinubu is not like you (Odili). If you are a good person, Tinubu called Rivers people, as an elder statesman he wanted you
of years to actually aspire to become a director in an organisation. But right now, there's no vacancy. And the person sitting next to me probably has eight years to go. Meanwhile, I have seven."
He further stated that, "So there's no career growth. And a lot of opportunities are out there. For example, among the people that have left, there are, like, three or four people who are going to set up a bank. The approach that we told them, literally, anything you want to do, if you need the support of the central bank, you are done.
“So the popular demand then was at the top, people that are stagnated, people that don't have any career progression any longer, they have reached their peak, and they are willing to go and take other risks before they get to an age where they become scared to take risks.
"You know, those programmes are put in place to ensure that those people are allowed to actually exit to go and start other things with their lives. But in this particular case, based on popular request, and I came with the Union Leader of the Bank, the staff requested that in this case, similar opportunities should be extended to other categories of staff. In the entire system, in the entire period, in the entire time that similar exercise has taken place, it's only people within a certain cadre, within the director cadre. The deputy director and directors who feel they want to go and start some other things, and assistant directors are given"
"But for the first time in the over 60 years history of the bank, the early exit program is extended to everybody who is actually willing to take it. And this came at the instance of the staff. So it's not mandatory, it's not compulsory, there's no coercion, there's no forceful exit, and there's no intimidation for anybody to take it. In fact, when this same thing has been, you know, approved, was approved by the Bank, and it was open, the number of staff that actually came forward to take it was even very amazing. Like I told you, there are some other people that are even thinking of going to start with the bank. So if the impression comes to this place that we are laying off, nobody is going to do this. It's the line of anybody. Nobody did it. It's an entirely voluntary exercise on the part of the Bank."
He maintained that "Those who want to take it, took it, and those who don't want to take it are still in the bank. And then again, sir, the issue of reorganisation, restructuring, and I added realignment, these are basically, it all depends on how you want to describe an elephant. Whether you want to describe it as a snake that has a long tail, or whether you want to describe it as a rock because you are touching the body, or whether you want to describe it as a knife because you are touching the hunk. They technically mean the same thing. It's all about optimisation and making sure that the organisation, vision, and mission is aligned with the manpower you come in, considering the man-loading.
The vote was an early test of the party’s ability to hang together as it advances Trump’s agenda of tax cuts and border enforcement. It also tested Trump’s clout on Capitol Hill, where a handful of Republicans have already shown a willingness to defy him.

” When my father is doing something wrong, should I not say ‘Papa, this is not what you said yesterday?’ Is that to make him cry? I ran in an election for Local government in 1999, and since then till now I have never lost
“The man-loading is how many people it takes to do a particular job, and how many hours do you need to put in. For example, if you are going to spend 40 hours, and you have like 10 people to do two jobs, well, it doesn't hurt anybody. These are Nigerians. If they are there, they don't hurt anybody. But there are people who are actually voracious. They want to do more.
“These are the people who feel that if we have this opportunity, we can go and start all that. And it was absolutely going to, and you can call me anytime, anywhere, and that's what it is. Nobody has been forced to leave. Nobody has been dictated to leave. Nobody has been stamped into leaving at all. It's strictly voluntary. If nobody had taken it, we would have just closed it. But this came as a result of popular demand. Like I said, I came with a representative from the staff unit to actually say it here."
Recapitalisation: Analysts Foresee Mergers By Tier-2 Banks
Meanwhile, as more financial institutions take steps to beat the recapitalisation directive of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), financial market analysts have predicted a wave of mergers among the tier-2 banks.
This, they argued, would be less about
The Vice President assured that the Nigerian economy was picking up, saying that the country was going to record a bumper harvest this year.
He said Nasarawa State has taken the position to feed the nation, adding that the federal government would continue to support the State in its quest to proffer solutions to the food crisis in Nigeria.
According to him, "The federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will continue to identify with Nasarawa State and render whatever support and assistance necessary to enable the state succeed."
On the distribution of relief items, Shettima said the federal government would continue to support the less privileged who had been affected by disasters to better their living conditions in their various localities.
Also, yesterday, while speaking at the Combined Graduation Ceremony of the Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational and Technology Institute in Lafia, the Vice President underscored the inevitability of skills acquisition among the young demographic in Nigeria, noting that the nation could no longer afford to keep growing a population of idle, unemployed and unemployable youths.

Speaking further, Wike said: “Everything has time, he is praising the court, the same court that they said all kinds of things on national television against. Now when they get judgement, the judiciary is correct. When they don’t get favourable judgement, the judiciary is cash and carry. I believe everything has limits and I want all of us to believe and have confidence. The wheel of justice is very slow but
meeting regulatory capital thresholds and more about positioning to compete effectively with the tier-1 banks, which dominate the industry.
The deadline for the recapitalisation exercise that requires banks to hold minimum capital of N500 billion, N200 billion and N50 billion for commercial banks with international, national, and regional licences respectively would elapse March 31st next year. Presently, only Access Bank has finalised its recapitalisation process.
Already, among the tier-2 banks, Providus Bank and Unity Bank, have entered into a business combination deal.
However, speaking with THISDAY, the analysts emphasised that while some tier-2 banks appear poised to meet the recapitalisation requirements, many would likely undertake significant structural adjustments to enhance their competitiveness.
Head of Financial Institutions Ratings at Agusto & Co., Ayokunle Olubunmi, noted that the recapitalisation process was set to reshape the Nigerian banking landscape, potentially altering the hierarchy of banks.
“Overall, most of the tier-2 banks are on track. For the majority of banks, raising capital isn't the issue; the real question is, for those with weaker financial positions, what are they willing to give up?” Olubunmi said.
Nkwocha, stated that, "The danger of paying lip service to technical and vocational skills acquisition is one none of us is prepared to experience, and the examples of various low- and middle-income countries, especially the Asian Tigers, are there to inspire the direction of our National Development Plans and push our economic drive towards a destination we all desire—a place of boom.
"This is why President Bola Tinubu has championed economic reforms beyond the usual cosmetic fixes to lay the groundwork for greater opportunities ahead. With increased allocations to the states, I believe that we are more than energised to fund our development programmes."
Recalling Nigeria's origin as an agrarian nation, the Vice President noted that there is no greater inspiration than concentrating on "the magnitude of initiatives made possible by the proceeds of the sector and the hard work of those skilled and unskilled workers who were the fulcrum of our pre-oil economy.”
According to him, the graduation ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate the sincerity of the administration's promise to create avenues for upskilling and reskilling the nation's workforce across sectors.

“We cannot be like them to disparage the judiciary. If the judiciary is down, Nigeria is down. It might not end in your favour; it must not be that it favoured me all the time. There is nothing we can do; we cannot carry arms.
“So just be calm, there is something that will happen in this state that everybody will know. The ongoing movement is not a party movement, it is the movement that you will see.

Wike, while recognising the presence of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, at the event, advised him to always carry those who supported his emergence as Governor of the State along.
"Nobody can be anything without people supporting you. Adams Oshiomole, you want to be governor, people must vote you. Oshomole you didn’t want to be a governor, but somebody bought a form for you and said come fill it, bring it, go, you will be. You are saying that God will be well with such people. If it is the will of God, let thy will be done,” he said.
Wike added: "If you follow my political history, it has never been easy; I have been charged for murder, for armed robbery just because of politics. There is nothing I have not passed through in my life. But I know at the end of the day we will overcome.”
Why noting that those who are praising his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara today, were same persons who protested against him being Governor, reiterating that he never regrets supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.
"I have no regret for supporting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win the election, all these making noise, they told Atiku, we will fight him.
the APC-led government fulfils its promise to Nigerians to "prioritise poverty reduction, employment generation, and job creation".
Cautioning against harbouring the population of unemployed youths in the country, he said, "The reality we inherited points to the existence of a link between youth unemployment, violence, and other associated crimes, and as such, we cannot afford to create an idle, unemployed, or unemployable demographic.
Shettima who had earlier flagged off the distribution of relief materials to flood victims, presentation of tractors and paddy rice to farmers in the state said it was a demonstration of his "affinity for Nasarawa State, and as a Kanuri man who has ancestral connections with some segments" of the state that has already become home to him.
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Sule said the skills programme of the state vocational and technology institute was designed to address the skills gap in critical sectors and empower young Nigerians.

Earlier, some elders in Rivers State, under the aegis of Concerned Elders of Rivers State have called for an unreserved apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following his recent derogatory remarks against Odili.
The demand was issued in a strongly worded statement signed by prominent leaders of the state, including former Governor Celestine Omehia, Prince Uche Secondus, former Deputy Governor of the state, Tele Ikuru, former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Austin Opara, Senator Ngoji Denton West, former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and Senator Lee Maeba. Other signatories included Dr. Dam Sam Jaja, Alabo David Briggs, High Chief Dr Shedrack Akolokwu, Dr Reginald Okeya, Ambassador Oji Ngofa, Hon Emma Okah, Alabo Senator Adawari Pepple, Chief Ambrose Nwuzi, and Chief Emeh Glory Emeh. The elders expressed deep dismay at Wike’s recent insults directed at Odili, his family, and his medical institution during an event at a church in Ororgwe, adding that such behaviour was not only unbecoming but also stands in contrast to the time-honoured traditions of mutual respect, especially respect for elders and deference to wisdom and experience that Rivers State holds dearly.

On his part, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, His Lordship, Hassan Kukah, thanked Nasarawa State government for the efforts to address poverty through skills acquisition and economic empowerment initiative, just as he emphasised the significance of empowering young people with skills to impact their communities and societies.
Also speaking, Executive Director of the Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational Technology Institute, Dr Daniel Asele said the 1,000 graduands of the 2024 programme of the institute had undergone rigorous training and acquired skills that are relevant to contemporary challenges of their communities and state at large.
In a goodwill message, the Director General of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Mr Adewale Oyerinde, commended the Nasarawa State government for its commitment to empowering young Nigerians, saying the programme would significantly impact ongoing efforts to transform and industrialise the economy by providing the necessary skilled manpower to drive the processes.

IGP Egbetokun: We Will Not Tolerate Killing, Assault of Officers
Hails Enugu Governor Police uncover stolen Toyota Prado Jeep in Abuja
Gideon Arinze in Enugu and Linus Aleke in Abuja
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has warned that the Nigerian Police Force will no longer tolerate any act of assault or killing of officers by criminal-minded individuals.
The IGP gave the warning yesterday in Enugu during his first official working visit to the headquarters of the Enugu State Police Command, ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s one-day state visit to the state during which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
will inaugurate some of the projects executed by Governor Peter Mbah. Egbetokun, who commended the efforts of Mbah’s administration in the security of lives and property as well as the overall development of the state, listed the projects to be inaugurated by the President to include the ultra-modern Command and Control Centre as well as 150 patrol vehicles fitted with AI-embedded cameras for the Distress Response Squad, a special police unit set up by the administration in collaboration with the Nigeria Police. Nigeria’s Court Allows Repossession of Arik Air's CRJ1000 By Canadian Agency
Kasim Sumaina in Abuja
The Federal High Court in Lagos has allowed Export Development Canada to repossess and tear down CRJ1000 5N-JEE (msn 19037) from Arik Air (W3, Lagos).
This was as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, hinted that the judgement is first victory in court in Nigeria courtesy of the Cape Town Convention as the court applied the CTC to the fullest and allowed instant repossession of the aircraft.
Keyamo, who stated this yesterday, through his social media (X) handle @fkeyamo, recently blamed that noncompliance record on legal impediments in Nigeria’s judicial process. It would be recalled in November 27, 2024, judgement by Justice Alexander Oluseyi Owoeye is the first of its kind after Nigeria signed the Cape Town Convention.
"EDC has been exercising its contractual rights as a creditor through the sale of the aircraft by (former owner of the aircraft) JEM Leasing Limited and views the court ruling as a positive step." Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), whom some Arik shareholders enlisted to help prevent the repossession and export of the aircraft, opposed the EDC.
It argued that JEM Leasing's sale of
the aircraft to Alberta Aviation Capital in late 2022 was invalid. However, Justice Owoeye found the transaction was legal, and there were no grounds for preventing the jet's export.
The aircraft was removed from the Nigerian register in 2022, but the EFCC blocked an attempt to repossess it in June 2023. The court heard this was a violation of Cape Town Convention Article 14.
The applicants in the matter were Captain Samuel Caulcrick and Captain Isiaka Oyeshina Akinfenwa. Caulcrick was the local repossession agent appointed by part-out firm Merchant Express Cargo, who had the CRJ teardown contract.
Akinfenwa is the CEO of Merchant Express Cargo. In previous court hearings, both men had criticised the tactics of the EFCC and Arik shareholder and founder Johnson Arumemi-Ikhide.
Among other things, Owoeye's ruling found that EFCC officials had harassed, threatened, questioned, intimidated, detained, and threatened to detain the applicants who were attempting to repossess the aircraft. In addition to granting the EDC the right to repossess and teardown the aircraft, Owoeye also issued an order preventing EFCC officials from interfering with this process. The CRJ remains in storage at Lagos airport.
Territory (FCT) Police operatives from the Durumi Division, uncovered an abandoned Toyota Prado Land Cruiser Jeep along David Ejoor Street, opposite Adisa Estate, Apo-Gudu, while on routine patrol.
In his address, the IGP said it was criminal and an offence against the government for any individual or group of individuals to assault or kill officers of the force, adding however, that officers are charged to respect the rights of the citizens.
“Anywhere a police officer is killed, there will be appropriate response from the police, moving forward," he said. “We are saying no to assault of our officers and killing of our men," adding, "We will not tolerate it again.”
Apart from assuring that the
federal government will provide officers of the command with every necessary resources needed to stamp out criminality in the society, the IGP noted that in addition to providing adequate resources, the force remains committed to pursuing policing reforms and ensuring that officers maintain professionalism and ethical conduct in the discharge of their duties.
“We will ensure that we train and retrain you and also equip you with modern policing tools to discharge their duty to the highest standards,” he said.
The IGP assured officers that the federal government, under the current administration, was passionate about their welfare and is working to improve it in recognition of their
sacrifices of protecting lives and property of citizens.
“I want to start by expressing our profound appreciation to the Governor of Enugu State for the support that you have given to the Nigeria Police Force in our quest to provide and ensure Peace and Security in Enugu State. Your commitment to our shared goal of a safer Nigeria is truly commendable.
“You are doing great things in Enugu State. The report I have been getting in Enugu has been truly good. I am very happy and glad to hear the force of work you are doing in the state to ensure that the people of Enugu State enjoy the dividends of democracy.
“Importantly, I congratulate you
on your giant strides in the area of security and in other areas. I am pleased to note that the collaboration between the Nigeria Police and Enugu State Government has continued to yield excellent results; and we are determined to build on this success.
“In this year 2025, I want to let you know that we are committed to pursuing our policing vision more vigorously. We will prioritise community engagement. We will prioritise professionalism and emphasis ethical conduct of our officers.
“I am very confident that with your support we are going to overcome all the challenges that we are facing presently and ensure that Nigeria becomes safer for all of us,” Egbetokun said.

Sharia: Stakeholders Urge Islamic Scholars to Avoid Misinformation
Raheem Akingbolu
Islamic scholars and other stakeholders have urged clerics who many claim to be Muftis to deepen their knowledge about Sharia before stating their position on any Islamic matters, especially in today's age of technology many misleading preaches and messages have found their way to social media leading to conflict.
The Mufti is an Islamic jurist qualified to issue a nonbinding opinion known as a fatwa on a point of Islamic law which is Sharia.
The scholars made the call recently at the 16th annual Islamic international conference organised by Daaru Naim Academy for Sharia Science of Nigeria held in Lagos with the theme, 'The Jurisprudence of Fatwa and its relationship with Maqasid-based Fiqh'.
They urged Muslim clerics to ensure that their messages are in line with the details of the Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad which also includes peaceful coexistence. They also called for a more coordinated effort by ensuring that not every cleric can
claim to be a mufti like it is done in many climes like Saudi Arabia to avoid misinformation.
Speaking at the event, the Conference Supervisor and Director General, Daaru Naim Academy for Sharia Science of Nigeria, Sheikh Imran Abdulmajeed Eleha, said that the emergence of clerics misleading their followers with their Fatwa is a major challenge and all hands must be on deck to reduce such trends.
"We saw the need to address the issue around Fatwa at this year's conference and to also curb misinformation about Sharia. It is also to ensure that Fatwa is critical that it is aligned with the fundamental objectives of sharia," he stated.
Undersecretary, Minister for Islamic Affairs, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Awwad bin Sabti Al-Anazi, said Prophet Muhammad emphasised the importance of knowledge and urged clerics to seek knowledge to avoid passing wrong information to people, adding that in his country the government is concerned about Fatwa and scholars are regulated to avoid misinformation and incorrect fatwa.

FBI: Texas Man Who Backed Islamic State Acted Alone in New Orleans Attack
A United States Army veteran who killed 14 people by ramming a truck into a crowd of New Year's Day revellers in New Orleans had pledged allegiance to Islamic State and appeared to have made recordings in which he condemned music, drugs and alcohol.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texas native who once served in Afghanistan, acted alone in the attack, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said on Thursday, reversing an earlier assessment that he may have had accomplices.
He was killed in a shootout with police after the rampage, which also injured dozens of people and has been
labelled by the FBI as an act of terrorism.
"It was premeditated and an evil act," Reuters quoted FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia, to have told a press conference on Thursday, reaffirming the bureau's conclusion that Jabbar was inspired by Islamic State, the militant group with fighters in Iraq and Syria. Raia said investigators were looking into Jabbar's "path to radicalisation," still uncertain how he transformed from military veteran, real-estate agent and one-time employee of the major tax and consulting firm Deloitte into someone who was "100 per cent inspired by ISIS," or Islamic state.
An Islamic State flag flew from a
staff attached to the back of the rented truck used in the attack.
Though greatly weakened by a sustained military campaign by a U.S.-led coalition, Islamic State has continued to recruit sympathisers online, experts say.
Jabbar's half-brother was also searching for answers, saying ShamsudDin Jabbar had been struggling to get past a recent divorce but that he showed no signs of anger just weeks prior to the attack.
"He was smart, funny, charismatic, loving, compassionate, humble and literally wouldn't hurt a fly," Abdur Rahim Jabbar told Reuters in an interview at his home in Beaumont,
Texas. "That's why it's so devastating. This degree of maliciousness is not like him. We are trying to understand what changed, too."
He said their father broke down upon hearing the news.
"(Our dad) started crying. He was saying 'nope, nope, not my oldest boy,'" Abdur Jabbar said.
The massacre on New Orleans' famed Bourbon Street in the French Quarter during a holiday celebration and an explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas have made for an unnerving start to the new year in the U.S.

As I share my ideas and viewpoints, I intend to stimulate conversations that will keep you informed and engaged.
Today, we are diving headfirst into the topic which is about one element that if fixed, can significantly transform the state of the Nigerian economy.
Indeed, Nigeria has enormous economic potential due to its abundant resources and growing population. The country has the potential to manufacture many products that are currently being imported. Its investment appetite is huge and driven by many opportunities and the level of return on investment in the country. However, economic growth and investment over the years have been hampered by its persistently low ranking on international measures of ease of doing business and it keeps punching below its belt.
It is well documented that Nigeria has a difficult business environment. In 2023, the country ranked 131st out of 190 economies in the World Bank’s annual ease of doing business ratings as it faces challenges in areas such as getting electricity, registering property, paying taxes, and resolving insolvency. Also, Nigeria was ranked ninth in Africa for investment opportunities in 2024, according to the Rand Merchant Bank’s ‘Where to Invest in Africa’ report, and Nigeria ranked 113th out of 133 economies in the 2024 Global Innovation Index (GII). Nigeria ranks 127th for infrastructure, 125th for institutions, and 121st for market sophistication, knowledge, and technology outputs.
Likewise, the manufacturers’ confidence in the country dipped by 1.7 points in the third quarter of 2024, to 50.2, from the 51.9 points recorded in the preceding quarter of 2024, according to data from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria’s (MAN) CEOs Confidence Index. According
to the report, all indices recorded a decline and stood below the 50-point standard due to the harsh businessoperating environment occasioned by high energy prices, exorbitant exchange rates, soaring interest rates, persistent inflation, and unstable fuel supply. A reading above 50 points indicates the expectation for economic expansion, while an index score of less than 50 suggests deterioration in the operating environment. It also showed that the confidence levels of operators within sectoral groups were heavily dampened by inflationary pressure, increase in imported products, low government patronage, and high cost of raw materials.
Additionally, Nigeria’s economic growth is severely hampered by corruption, which both local and foreign investors frequently point to as a major deterrent to conducting business in the country.
The harsh business environment has been largely attributed to lack of government’s commitment to policy execution, among others, as successive governments would always declare their intention to support business operators, but end up, in most times, not living to their promise.
Without resolving the power sector crisis and guaranteeing that Nigerians have access to reasonably priced energy, the country cannot hope for significant national economic development as businesses are forced to produce a sizable amount of their electricity due to challenges in the power sector. This acts as a barrier to widespread economic development, as
many companies run their operations using generators that run on costly diesel, which drives up prices even more.
President Bola Tinubu was clearly aware of this when he was campaigning for office. In his 80-page action plan for a better Nigeria tagged ‘Renewed Hope,’ he had pledged that if elected he would create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
Therefore, improving the country’s business environment to support domestic businesses, and enthrone a friendlier business environment that attracts foreign direct foreign investments is the low-hanging fruit for the Tinubuled administration.
Today, the country’s ability to attract domestic and foreign investment remains low compared to its peers.
The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) set up in 2016 by President Muhammad Buhari to develop policies aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises to make Nigeria a progressively easier place to do business, in collaboration with all arms and levels of government, as well as the private sector, should be tasked to do more.
Interestingly, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, was the pioneer Executive Secretary of PEBEC and it is believed that she has a full grasp of factors making it difficult for businesses to flourish. Oduwole must understand the fierce urgency to increase investment and expand trade in the country. It is the primary responsibility of the government to create an enabling environment where people can do business

In every conglomeration or configuration of shared spatial co-existence, to survive, we must mitigate and protect individuals’ rights within the polity. In this instance, I am specific about the right to freedom of speech. As much as I love the civility of mutual respect, I cannot comprehend the puerile and almost non-rational rational attitude of most of Nigeria’s youth today. No thanks to social media where everyone now is a content creator. Whatever garbage is put out is required to be liked and shared.
I fail to recognise the positivity of the class of those whose future are being stolen yet remain enamored by some perceived successes of governance in our nation. In these young people’s incurable optimism, fanned into live by various factors, they fail to recognize that every
government fails when they are unable to protect the lives and property of their citizens. When the people are hungry, desolate and poverty stricken, yet told to endure some more - and those counseling patience and endurance keep on enriching themselves and their cronies... I fail to see your optimism. I ask for you to be intentional, honest and altruistic in your analysis of the state of our coexistence in a supposed nation-state. What nation? Someone suggested ‘there was a nation’, but I aver that there was never a nation. However, if for argument’s sake, one were to concede and agree that there was a nation, prosaic and quaint as it may sound, that nation was either in gestation, comatose at birth or a stillbirth. As for the state of that nation; shambolic, disgraceful, the bastardization of a heritage of virtue, of ethics; here a good name is not
preferred to silver and gold. And because we left an oil lamp burning on our thatched roof, we incinerated what our forebears bequeathed to us. We no longer honor those who serve, those who build so that the community may grow. Rather, viscerally, we celebrate those who are morally rotten, compost of a dunghill. Every altar in the land has been desecrated and every memory of those gone before dragged through murk, and mud.
This seismic shift is akin to communal schizophrenia – herein lie the most important question – how do we fix a communal collapse of rationality and the capacity or desire for the common good?
We are a fragmented people because we broke that which was the soul of the experiences of our families, relationships, religion, our economy and politics and our culture. Therefore, without an
and investors would find it attractive to invest. If she can execute this successfully, businesses will thrive and the government would benefit in terms of revenue generation. Simplifying regulations, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and fostering a more predictable business environment are not just desirable goals, but essential for Nigeria to reach its full potential.
Creating a more business-friendly climate would signal to international investors that Nigeria is open for business and would encourage the growth of small and mediumsized enterprises, which are the backbone of any economy. Additionally, it reduces opportunities for corruption, promotes a level playing field for businesses, increases public trust in government, and enhances the country’s global competitiveness by making it more attractive for trade and investment in the long term.
Improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria is not just a technical exercise; it’s a strategic imperative for the country’s economic future. The achievement of double-digit growth, which is the target of the government, achieving a drop in inflation and a friendly macroeconomic environment would also require a shift in policy focus. Monetary policy must be supported by a robust fiscal framework and comprehensive structural reforms. Policy reform can impact positively on the environment for ordinary Nigerians and contribute to stimulating FDI. By addressing these concerns, it would be easier for domestic and foreign investors to do business in the country.
With this, Nigeria can unlock its vast potential, attract investment, create jobs, and improve the lives of its citizens. The time for action is now.
established identity to stand on, the nation drifts based only on the hope that the “ship” will not hit the rocks to disintegrate until all that is lootable has been looted from its hold. Here is a Banana Republic run by brigands, opportunists, and mad men. It is worse than an asylum because lunacy has become a shared experience between the committed and the supposed caregivers.
The populace has been so mentally traumatised and denigraded that they can only moan and groan about their servitude. Ranka de de, they offer platitudes to their own oppressors as if begging for crumbs to fall from their tables to the millions of Lazaruses who grovel and groan, dusk to dawn, daily, all over the country in an attempt to salvage the fragmentation and make ends meet as best as possible is the only way to survival.
Unfortunately, those sworn to honor believe that honor carries no currency. To create a society where the two percent are the super wealthy, with an unrecognizable and unaccounted for middle class – and the rest of the population are forced into platitudes, prosaicisms, where citizens become scavengers in the sewages of poverty created by the two percent; that is the reality of a nation that has only existed in theory and in dreams. There was no nation, there is no nation, therefore, there is no state – there is an existence, ephemeral at best, scripted and directed by megalomaniacs and despots. This is a new year, wake up, open your eyes and minds, fight for the establishment of a nation worth calling our own

Atiku’s Attack on Seyi Tinubu: Fact v Fiction
In Praise of President Buhari
2024: A Year of Struggles and Strength
When President Muhammadu Buhari took over the reins of power on May 29, 2015, Nigeria was sadly a broken state in many respects. As a result of many other factors including bad governance and untold level of corruption, government could not live up to its financial obligations to citizens and service providers at both the federal and state levels.
FIndeed one of the first official assignments that President Buhari carried out was the approval of billions of Naira in bailout funds to enable state governors pay something as basic as workers’ salaries. Granting those bailout funds was a huge boost to national security because the pressure of arrears of unpaid monthly salaries building dangerously all over the country was a ticking bomb.
by the EFCC, President Buhari by his action has successfully brought back to the public consciousness the need to treat public funds with the highest level of transparency and accountability.
ormer Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently condemned what he termed “the military honours” accorded to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, at an empowerment event organized by the City Boy Movement in Ogun State.
Some of the former Vice President’s angry comments, regarding the video of this event included: “A desecration of Nigeria’s long-standing military traditions,” “The brazen use of firearms by civilians in this socalled parade,” and “If any laws were broken, it is the duty of security agencies to ensure accountability.”
AStop Ritual Attacks and Killings
munity solidarity.
After keeping treasury looters on their toes and at bay through the EFCC, particularly, President Buhari moved to curb unnecessary spending habits of the nation on what economists call articles of ostentation. Part of the disclosures of the President’s stock taking was how the country frittered away billions in foreign currency by importing goods, which can be produced at home. One of such items was rice, a major staple among Nigerians. By banning rice importation into the country, the President on one hand had saved the nation billions in foreign currency annually.
s we embrace a new year, now is the time to reflect on the journey that was 2024 for Nigeria. 2024 has been a tapestry woven with threads of challenges, growth, resilience, and a renewed sense of hope. From the bustling streets of Lagos to the serene landscapes of the north, every corner of Nigeria has contributed to a narrative of perseverance and transformation.
TYet, despite these hurdles, 2024 was also a year of significant progress and resilience. A notable surge in youth entrepreneurship emerged, with young Nigerians embracing innovation and technology to create solutions for everyday problems.
Having now viewed the video myself, I was rather disappointed to see the biggest crime that seemed to have been committed during the event was the bugler missing a few notes during his recital.
Ask the naysayers and they would readily remind you of how long it took President Buhari to appoint his ministers and how that contributed to collapse of the economy as if, without ministers, governance was frozen. But buying that narrative would amount to what a famous Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie, termed “the danger of a single story”. Yet the whole story was that many of our citizens did not know how decrepit a state President Buhari inherited in 2015.
And, on the other hand, the President has boosted domestic production of rice and in the process had nudged the country into self sufficiency in food production. He also created millions of jobs for young people in the rice value chain.
Why former VP Abubakar decided to end 2024 with this kind of attack is, to say the least, disappointing.
It was therefore necessary for him to take stock against the background of the fact that the departing government did not, reportedly, cooperate full well with the incoming government in terms of leaving workable handover notes. Although President Goodluck Jonathan was gracious in defeat, many of his appointees were still sulking over what they saw as their personal losses and therefore pulled all the stops to make things difficult for the Buhari government.
A quick fact check, as well as a close view of this video, immediately exposes Abubakar’s comments as baseless and unwarranted.
These are the facts: A group called the Community Auxiliary Development and Effective Transformation Network (CADET) were responsible for the parade. This youth empowerment programme often performs this kind of service for dignitaries of various standing.
During the event, Seyi Tinubu awarded approximately N14 million in grants to five young tech innovators in the state.
The ‘weapons’ carried by the ‘cadets’ were wooden copies – not deadly arms.
Even with the obvious and unpatriotic obscurantist behaviour of the PDP appointees and their supporters still in government hell-bent on making things difficult for Buhari, the President moved on with his methodical repair of a broken country. The first thing he did was to identify all possible sources of income to the nation and directed that all inflows be paid into one single account in line with the policy of Single Treasury Account (TSA).
The TSA policy, interestingly, was mooted by the PDP government but its penchant for imprudence and lack of accountability denied it the courage of implementing the policy. What the President literally did was to gather all the nation’s money into one box and locked it up with a big padlock and watched for any thief to come close.
So, to sum up this event in a more direct and honest fashion, the account should, perhaps, have read: “President’s son, Seyi Tinubu, is warmly greeted by a group of young cadets, whose motto is ‘discipline and service’ before he generously hands out grants to young tech innovators from the region.”
I’m not sure why Atiku Abubakar has so little time for this celebration of Nigeria’s youth. With children of his own, one would have hoped he could have been a little bit more understanding, and less judgmental.
Wasiu Kayode, Abeokuta
Who can blame the President for almost developing paranoia over the safeguard of the national treasury with revelations and reports of mind-boggling looting that took place in the 16 years of the PDP? With such disclosures of how billions meant for fighting insurgency in the Northeast ended up in the pockets of a few individuals while our gallant soldiers fought with bare hands and on empty stomach, President Buhari was duty bound to bring sanity and accountability back in national spending.
Thus, under President Buhari, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which had remained comatose for years, was woken up to resume its duties. Apart from the trillions of Naira of looted
What is most admirable about President Buhari and his government is its frugal management of scarce national resources to attain optimum goals. Recall that since President Buhari stepped in the saddle, oil revenue dropped abysmally as if to sabotage him knowing all the big promises he made to citizens during his campaigns. But with the little resources that trickle in, the President is achieving what governments that received oil windfalls could not dream of.
2024 began amidst a backdrop of economic uncertainties and social challenges. Inflation rates remained high, impacting the cost of living and making life increasingly difficult for many families. Essential commodities soared in price, leading to growing discontent among citizens struggling to make ends meet. Security issues surged in various regions, with incidents of violence and unrest underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and com-
Today, the trains are up and running daily from Abuja to Kaduna. And from Lagos to Ibadan a brand new rail track was started and completed; citizens are already commuting daily to and fro these two major cities in the country seamlessly as they reap from the dividends of democracy. And with the way this government is going, before 2023 when the President would leave, the entire country would be linked by rail with all of its economic advantages.

As we reflect on the lessons of 2024, it is vital to carry forward the momentum of progress and resilience into the future. The challenges faced have reinforced the need for comprehensive policies addressing economic instability, security, and social equity. There is a collective responsibility to hold leaders accountable and ensure that the voices of all Nigerians continue to resonate in the corridors of power.
Happy new year Nigeria

Stay in the Dark
The latest influencer trend, at least in countries like Australia that are in the Summer season, shows them getting selectively sunburnt to show strap lines. The discussion of health issues is important but maybe the young influencers might consider the cost and damages. Medical authorities are condemning this stupidity. I have had about half a dozen pieces of skin cut out which is expensive and leaves scars. A few scars on an influencers face will decrease their earnings. There are limits to how much photoshop can do.
Dennis Fitzgerald, Melbourne, Australia
he Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) urges the Nigerian public to stop ritual attacks and killings because the notion of ritual money and wealth is completely baseless. AfAW is making this call following the reported arrest of suspected ritualists in Oyo State in southern Nigeria. The local media reported that members of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, arrested suspected ritualists with the body parts of a 73-year-old man. The suspects, who were apprehended in the Boluwaji area in Ibadan, said that a Muslim cleric asked them to procure some human body parts for rituals. Ritual attacks are widespread in Nigeria. Irrational conceptions of how to make money or become wealthy and successful undergird these atrocities. Many Nigerians strongly believe in blood money, known in some local languages as Ogun Owo (Yoruba) or Ogwu ego (Igbo). They think that they could become rich, or successful through ritual sacrifice. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Ritual wealth has no basis in reason, science, or reality. Home movies known as Africa magic or Nollywood films have not helped matters. These movies continue to reinforce these mistaken notions and other superstitions. Families, churches, mosques, and other public institutions do not encourage the interrogation of these traditional occult beliefs. There are no robust efforts to criticize or dispel these irrational and paranormal claims in schools, colleges, and universities. So millions of Nigerians grow up blindly believing that they could make money through ritual sacrifice of human body parts. The belief has led many Nigerians to commit crimes and perpetrate atrocities. Many Nigerians have been jailed or are undergoing court trials due to ritualrelated attacks and murder. Not too long ago, the police arrested some young Nigerians for stealing female pants, which they intended to use for ritual sacrifice. AfAW is asking all Nigerians to desist from ritual-related abuses because ritual money beliefs are baseless superstitions. Nigerian media, schools, and colleges should help educate and reorient the public. They should assist in reasoning Nigerians out of this killer-superstitious absurdity and nonsense.

Running Government as Business: The Governor Umo Eno Example
Michael Effiong James
Governor Umo Eno’s administration in Akwa Ibom State is a shining example of running government as a business and this is one virtue that is indeed worthy of emulation.
The governor who is a dye-in-the wool businessman indicated from the get go that he would instill principles associated with running a business into government like productivity, integrity and efficiency.
In the last 19 months, he has been running the state as a corporate entity with the realization that the shareholders, which he insists, are the people, must have value for all monies spent and return on their investment
In his view the ROI for the people is meaningful development across the state and economic growth of the people.
With his track record in entrepreneurship and management, Gov. Eno has brought a unique approach to governance, focusing on stimulating youths to be engaged in economic money-yielding activities, reengineering moribund assets to profitability and instituting social welfare schemes.
With a well-defined economic blueprint which focuses on Agricultural Revolution, Rural Development, Infrastructure Maintenance and Advancement, Security Management and Educational Advancement known as the ARISE Agenda, he is consolidating past economic efforts while fostering a more vibrant, diversified, inclusive, technology-driven economy for Akwa Ibom.
He has so far shown a clear understanding of how to save cost, take tough decisions and be good steward of assets.
Nothing exemplified this approach to governance like the recently held Ministerial Briefing/End of Year Review of his administration.
With stakeholders from the organized private sector, Civil Society Organsations, representatives of the 31 LGAs, political and civil service top shots as the audience, the Governor, his cabinet and key agencies presented their scorecards and future plans.
Years back this was the preserve of Commissioners, but Governor Eno is a leader who is cast from an extraordinary mould.
Describing the exercise as the state’s AGM, Gov. Eno was there throughout the three days, taking notes copiously as comments were being made while giving clarifications and expatiating on s key points when needed, an evidence that he was on top of his game and knows his onions.
It must be said that long before that Exco briefing, Gov. Eno has steadily been deploying business principles in governance.
A few months after assuming office, he initiated the first Made-in-Akwa Ibom Fair and set up the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development Centre ( Ibom LED). This centre was created to serve as an incubator that will provide training and support for the workforce needed to drive the ARISE Agenda.
Through its Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme, it has so far trained 2000 participants, with beneficiaries receiving N500,000 each as business support grant while 400 of them who are female youths would get N750,000 each.
In addition, 200 beneficiaries are being sponsored at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre (DASAC). All these initiatives are aimed at boosting entrepreneurship, reducing unemployment, and promoting economic development. His leadership style is characterized by a strong emphasis on accountability and no way this can be achieved without the deployment of technology. It was therefore no mistake that he established a Directorate of ICT and Digital Services.
It was why he personally witnessed the landing of 2ndAfrica’s 45,000 Kilometers subsea cable system in Akwa Ibom which when fully laid would liberalize internet access in Akwa Ibom and directly impact its GDP.
Businesses thrive on data to review their operations, make informed decisions and design the future. Indeed, data is king. In Akwa Ibom today, government programmes, projects and decisions are data driven.
Programmes such as the bursary scheme, upgrading of the social register, enumeration of groups, cash grants for home farmers and the ARISE Youth Employment portal are all digital-based. Specifically on the ARISE Employment Portal, youths would be the greatest beneficiary as employment would no longer be based on “man no man”.
For Gov. Eno, competence should be the overriding criteria for employment. In his words “ Why can’t we have our best and brightest in the civil service. Going forward, employment into the service would be through the ARISE Employment portal”.
Also, database from the portal will be used to disburse all government’s youth-focused welfare programmes. Already, 15,000 youths being the first batch, have received N50,000 stopgap grant which would eventually reach 60,000 beneficiaries. Unemployed youths have been encouraged to register and benefit from the goodies thereof.
It is his business savvy nature that has enabled him provide loads of support for SMES. He has committed N2billion
matching funds to the Bank of Industry (BOI) to provide single digit loans to traders.
Another N2billion which was to be a loan has been converted to grant also for traders. While N200 million each have been set aside for traders from Arewa, Yoruba, Igbo and Niger Delta Communities doing business in the state.
As part of his planned Townhall meeting with Akwa Ibomites across the 10 Federal Constituencies, two entrepreneurs per LGA will get N5,000,000 each as business support.
Interested entrepreneurs are to make a 2-minute video of their business: current state, staff strength, future plans, make a pitch and upload on a website that would soon be made public. The beneficiaries would be chosen through an open process. Furthermore, he is planning a Power Summit that is aimed at presenting practical steps to solving the state’s power supply problem as well as Tourism and Corporate Business Summits. While the former is to develop a masterplan to enhance the tourism potential of the state, the former is to harness and celebrate Akwa Ibom Talents across the globe.
Everyone knows how important land is to economic growth and thus, the Governor has been vigorously pursuing the takeoff of the Akwa Ibom Geographical Information Service (AkwaGIS). This project which would revolutionize land administration in the state is set for launch by first quarter of 2025.
Being a businessman who has faced tough times, he has been intentional about turning waste to wealth. This was reason for conversion of the dilapidated former Governor’s Lodge on highbrow Bishop Aboyade-Cole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos to the 18- Storey Ibom Towers. In Abuja, a portion of state Liaison Office located in the busy Central Business Area would soon house a 3-star hotel. Similarly, the Uyo Convention Centre, which was conceptualized by the Godswill Akpabio Administration is also going to be completed in a move to make Akwa Ibom the numero uno destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE).
Another evidence of this penchant for converting waste to wealth is the marvel called ARISE Park. This project is a testament to one man’s expression of empathy, audacity, creativity and power of vision.
From a den of miscreants and a gully erosion-ravaged ravine, he has turned the place into what may soon be adjudged the best family-themed Park in the nation, complete with children playground, a 9-hole golf course, artificial lakes, restaurants, accommodation, banquet facilities and other amenities that can compare to any such park the world over. All serious businesses aim to be socially responsible. Little wonder that Gov. Eno has rolled out many charitable programmes such as the ARISE Compassionate Homes, where 112 have been built and handed over to the beneficiaries while work is ongoing on additional 62 units. His target is to deliver 400 homes at the end of his first term.

Since we currently inhabit an increasingly individualised world where certain people tend to prioritise personal gain, some may pay scant attention to the value of giving. But giving, especially the institutionalised giving called philanthropy, has towering benefits, not just for the larger human community but for the giver himself/herself.
As the organisation, Christian Business Sisterhood, notes, research is fairly unanimous on the fact that, “generosity can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and even extend your lifespan.”
This is because “better health means you have more time and energy to put into your business. Giving makes you happier. It’s a well-known fact that giving makes you feel good.”
Tifany Boyles, proprietor of the philanthropic consulting company, Red Philanthropy, observes pointedly: “With generations being nicknamed the “selfie generation” and social media perpetuating narcissistic behaviors, philanthropy compels just the opposite.
Taking an interest in social causes inspires us to educate ourselves beyond our personal
network and to consider lives beyond our own…We must preserve the purpose of philanthropy – to create public good rather than personal gain. When personal gain is the donor’s motivation, that is when philanthropy loses its purpose and can cause harm. While the purpose of philanthropy is not to benefit one’s self, there is no question that giving has indirect and incredible benefits to the generous.”
In continually seeking to make a change in his environment through his philanthropic activities, the frontline politician, entrepreneur, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ABM Global Ltd, Dr. Alex Mbata, a member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry (MFM), is simply intent on spreading joy. No more, no less. And that is why authorities of the Mountain Top University (MTU), a top-notch Christian institution located in Makogi Oba, Ogun State, founded in 2015 and reputed, “for its strictness and enforcement of spiritual activities as well as one of the best music departments in the country,” garlanded him with an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degree during its sixth convocation ceremonies held at Prayer City
last month, an occasion where 378 graduates were awarded first degrees and post-graduate degrees in different disciplines.
The faith-based university would not let his “philanthropic disposition and commitment to the improved welfare of mankind” go unrewarded. It decided to give honour to whom it was due, as the awardee had been emotionally and financially invested in the success of the university over time.
Fittingly, the keynote speaker at the ceremony, Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, instructively averred that the task before the country “is to be innovative and serve others so that the world will be a better place for all,” while the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire Bible Church and Chancellor of the University, Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, also charged the graduands to be the light and salt of the world in line with biblical injunction. Olukoya spoke glowingly about, Dr Alex Mbata, saying he had inspired and contributed significantly to the sustenance of Mountain of Fire Bible Church, owners of the university, and the university itself. Olukoya did not fail to note that since its inception, MTU had been producing morally sound, academically excellent, hardworking
graduates equipped with the vocational skills to be self-independent and be employers of labour. In his response, Mbata thanked the management and staff of the university for the award which he said would spur him to do more. And, there and then, he promised to build and donate a 100-bed female hostel to the university, taking his contributions to the university to another level entirely.
Family, Friends and people from all walks of life converged at the Festival hotel, Diamond Estate, Amuwo Odofin to celebrate God’s goodness, mercy and faithfulness with Mama Agnes Okoronkwo for her 90th Birthday celebration. “This vast war chest of knowledge capital of an outstanding first degree from the University of Lagos and two master degrees from Europe gave Tony Chiejina the Midas-touch which
he has transmitted into some of the biggest brands in Nigeria from soft drinks company, Seven-up, to financial institutions including Oceanic Bank which later morphed into Ecobank and Zenith Bank.
“When he picked up the Dangote brand in the late 2000s it was in a very raw state. Over the past two decades, he and his team have built Dangote into the most vibrant brand in the world.
“One of the most outstanding skills which he brings to his practice is that ability to subjugate his personality to the brand he is building. His ability to ensure that his enormous profile does not get in the way of the brand he is building is his most unique attribute. He is a titan of the profession and must be celebrated,” said Crusoe Osagie, Journalist, PR Strategist and Media Adviser to former Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.
Also speaking, Anambra State’s Commissioner for Industry, Christian Udechukwu, described Chiejina as “probably the most influential strategic communications, foresight brand developer, and the foremost public relations innovator in Africa, especially Nigeria.
“Tony has been at the forefront of building the world’s most sustainable and leading brands like Dangote, which has been repeatedly rated as the most valuable and best-known brand in Africa.”
Similarly, Editor-in-Chief of Leadership Newspaper, Azu Ishiekwene said, “Chiejina is like the Iron Dome, solid in the defence of the Dangote brand and nurturing it selflessly and quietly for decades with his team, yet shy to take any credit. This is the hallmark of a PR man.”
Founder and Chairman of Proshare Limited, Femi Awoyemi, had spoken glowingly about Chiejina, saying: “Anthony Chiejina is well known as the spokesman of the Dangote Group. What is often lost in this description is the value of Tony as a first-rate scholar, speechwriter, and communications strategist, who has earned his reputation having built up a first-class track record of achievements managing the Zenith Bank and erstwhile Oceanic Bank global footprints.
“Tony is deliberate and intentional about his actions and has a work ethic that is grounded in professional excellence. In our dealings over decades, he has nudged, encouraged, and challenged us to observe first principles, clarity of thought, and credibility in communications – breaking down the value chain and ecosystem in all engagements.
“He prioritises the country’s interest in his engagements, be it within his group, his faith, and his devotion to learning as a basis for interventions. Such clarity of thought and purpose makes him a leader of leaders in the industry.”
Also, a former Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Dr. Uche Nworah, had in eulogising the brand management expert said: “Tony Chiejina has a beautiful mind”. Nworah went on to reel out some hidden attributes that stand Chiejina out.
“He is quiet, but very intelligent, efficient and effective. I see him as a thought leader. I worked under him at Oceanic Bank Int. Plc, in the Corporate Affairs Department, before I was made Head of Training.
“I used to write speeches for the MD/CEO, Dr. Mrs. Cecilia Ibru. Tony will brief me and I will spend days and nights working on the speech. In the end, I will feel very proud of myself that I have done a perfect job. That’s when Tony will
bring in new textbooks and materials and tell me to read the materials as my perspectives will change after reading them, and they did. Tony is a voracious reader and has a very sharp mind. He is a leader of men and shows empathy on the job. I consider him a friend and a senior colleague and we still share ideas on several subjects.”
CEO, Top50 Brands Nigeria, Taiwo Oluboyede also said: “Chiejina exemplifies a rare blend of intelligence, wit, and approachability, combining a sharp mind with genuine kindness—an uncommon trait in his position. His willingness to contribute and support others makes him a standout figure in his field. Having had the privilege of interacting with him a number of times, I’ve found each encounter to be truly inspiring.
His recognition as one of the world’s top 100 corporate communicators is a well-deserved one, considering his exceptional career and significant contributions to the communications and marketing profession,”
Chiejina’s success can be attributed to his unique approach to corporate communications, which emphasises the importance of storytelling, stakeholder engagement, and social responsibility. He has also been a strong advocate for the development of local talent and has mentored numerous young professionals in the field of corporate communications.
Chiejina’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He has inspired a generation of corporate communications professionals, and his commitment to mentoring and developing local talent has had a lasting impact on the industry.
As the Dangote Group continues to expand its operations across Africa, Chiejina’s role will become increasingly important. His expertise and leadership will be crucial in shaping the brand’s narrative and maintaining its position as one of the leading brands in Africa.
2024: Platform for Building Lasting Security and Stability
As Africa navigates its path toward sustainable development and security, the just concluded African Military Games Abuja (AMGA Abuja 2024) stands out as a landmark sporting event that has reshaped the narrative of military engagement beyond the battlefield.
By bringing together military personnel from across the continent, the games have fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose that transcends national interests and reminds us that security and stability are not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of strong, cooperative relationships built on mutual respect and trust.
As the stadium lights dimmed and delegates began their journeys home, the legacy of the African Military Games Abuja 2024 was clear. The closing ceremony of the games was an unforgettable spectacle that brought the event to a climactic end.
Significantly, the second edition of the games was much more than a showcase of athletic talent. It was a resounding celebration of unity, shared purpose, and the triumph of collective victory.
The convergence of sports, culture, and entertainment camaraderie painted a vivid
picture of Africa’s resilience and strength.
Delegates from about 21 African nations marched into the stadium, proudly bearing their national flags and adorned in colorful uniforms that reflected their unique cultural identities. The opening ceremony set the tone with an awe-inspiring fusion of traditional and modern performances, symbolizing the harmony of Africa’s past and future.
Speaking on the success of the games, Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, a former athlete himself General Christopher Musa, who also was the chief host said hosting the game highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening African partnerships through sports diplomacy, reinforcing trust and collaboration on issues of regional security and stability.
According to him, “The Games are a step toward revitalizing African unity and selfsufficiency while projecting a continent ready to address its challenges and stand stronger on the global stage.”
Given the preparedness and execution of the games by the organisers, it was therefore no wonder that the just concluded African Military Games Abuja, 2024, left a lasting feeling for those who participated in the games or thronged the MKO Abiola international stadium Abuja to witness it and also, those who watched from the comfort of their homes as Nigeria for the
first time in over 10 years hosted a global event without any trace of hiccups.
Most of the countries that made it to the games also gave their scorecard as to Nigeria’s ability to host the world as all were excited with the warmness and hospitality Nigeria and Nigerians extended to them.
Indeed, the just concluded games was an event to be much remembered. Worthy of mention also was the vibrancy of the Mami Market—a lively hub of commerce that sprang to life during the games. Vendors, artisans, and entrepreneurs from across the continent converge at the mami markets to sell goods ranging from traditional crafts and clothing to food and beverages etc.
The influx of participants, spectators, and support staff transformed the market into an economic powerhouse, fostering trade and boosting local economies.
Additionally, the market provided a unique opportunity for established organizations and small-scale entrepreneurs to reach new audiences, contributing to grassroots economic empowerment. Banks, FMCGs, manufacturing concerns among others were common sites with branding displays that added colorful bent to the event.
The African Military Game also presented a unique opportunity for the Nigerian Armed
Forces to showcase their skills to the world as about 1,600 officers and personnel of the Armed Forces drawn from various military formations across the country participated during the event.
Nigeria, Algeria and Kenya topped the list of medalists’ tables at the games. Nigeria got 114 Gold, 65 Silver and 55 Bronze bringing it to 234 medals that shot the country to 1st position during the games.
Algeria, Nigeria’s closest rival got 53 Gold, 22 Silver and 21 Broze while, Kenya coasted home with 21 Gold, 17 Silver and 12 Bronze placing them in 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
The event not only showcased athletic talent but also underscored the armed forces commitment to using sports as a platform for diplomacy, cultural exchange, and the promotion of African unity.
To this end, one major milestone achieved with AMGA 2024 was how previously aggrieved countries who in their own volition pulled out from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was rallied to feature during the games.

James Ume: A Study in Philanthropy
Munachimso Ahamefula writes about the philanthropic activities of the founder, Channels Koos Media Consults Ltd/ Founder, Unubiko Foundation, Mr. Chijioke James Ume
Philosophy imbues humanity with perspectives to life, perhaps that could best explain different attitudes, value systems, and dispositions to life; that will also cast a shaft of light in the direction of the immeasurable pleasure which people who live for others derive from following their hearts by caring for others.
Born in Atan Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, in present-day Abia State, one could without fear of contradiction aver that a good dance is deciphered from the sound of the drum as from infancy, Chief Chijioke James Ume would rather take the least of anything to leave others satisfied.
Fast-forward to the present, that inert quality of fending for others has only grown in leaps and bounds so that during the inauguration of one of the numerous projects he has singlehandedly executed, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti who was guest of honour opined that while he was not opposing the opening prayer of the occasion where it was said that God should raise more persons for Atan Abam like him, but that God should raise such caliber of persons for other communities as having two of such in one place would not ensure equitable distribution given what he was already doing for the community.
Incidentally, his village is not the only beneficiary of his large heart. He renovated Ovukwu Abam secondary school with over N500 million and the place is looking like a mini tertiary institution. He did same at Onyerubi secondary school, Ndi Oji Abam in addition to offering scholarships for students in the school. Every year, before Governor Otti announced free education, Chief James, the Ike Abam always wrote off the exam fees and school fees for both primary and secondary schools in the area.
Under his Unubiko Foundation, he has offered scholarships to countless students in addition to another joint scholarship for girl child education where he co-sponsors bright female students with full scholarships.
Abam has 27 villages and he has provided boreholes for all the villages and those with high population density, he sunk more than one borehole thereby making water available to the people.
When Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) disconnected power from some communities in Abam, he also stepped in and defrayed humongous bills foisted on them and restored power to their places.
When Ndi Ebe Abam bridge reconstruction stalled, he used his personal resources to rebuild the bridge and linked the community back with civilisation.
His support for women groups defies understanding and is apparently compulsive leading to hefty donations to women groups in support of stated goals. He demonstrated that when he took over the Women hall in Atan Abam, expanded and completed the project for them and later followed it up with donation of N50 million to Idima Abam women on one of his stopovers in the community.
When he visited the ancestral Amelu Abam and noticed that the customary court there was dilapidated, he wasted no time in building a new and befitting one for the community. He spreads light and development wherever he goes.
His house along Ndi Oji road has turned into a Mecca of sorts as people visit to have their personal problems attended to. Yearly, he distributes cars to people, build houses for indigents and recently acquired some hectares of land where he built 56 two-bedroom flats for indigents to be distributed to people who ordinarily lack the financial muscle to build own houses.
In 2024 December, while tragedies were dogging distribution of food items across the country, he seamlessly distributed his without any incident and to show he is not clout chasing, no publicity attended his where people got food items and money.
When COVID-19 reared its ugly head and chased people into their closets, one of the most pressing problems people faced was hunger and starvation; using his foundation, he distributed food items like rice, pastas and tubers across all Abam villages and later extended to communities across the country where his attention was drawn to the plight of the people.
Having a media bias, Ike Abam never left any issue that related to journalists unattended. During COVID-19, he shared food items to journalists first in Abuja and later across chapels. He constantly writes off medical bills of people mostly held in hospitals due to their inability
Ume
to defray bills; he constantly sponsors. Journalists for medical treatments and pays their rents as well as other bills for their families. Most children who had dropped out of school due to financial stress are constantly brought under the Unubiko Foundation.
Recently, he donated N500 million to Abia State Polytechnic, Aba during their convocation.
Commenting on the pledge to the Polytechnic, Ume said it was to enable the institution expedite its infrastructure projects to create a conducive and sustainable environment for learning. He pointed out that the disbursement of the N500 million would be overseen by Governor Otti.
“The Governor would be in charge of the disbursement of the funds. The governor would also choose the particular project he wants for the school,” Ume noted.
He added, “We are doing 56 units of two-bedroom homes for the less privileged in the state, all solarpowered. It would be handed over by Christmas.”
A northern group, the Arewa Youths Assembly (AYA) and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), an umbrella body of over 21 million polytechnic students across Nigeria said the N500 million endowment by the founder, Unubiko Foundation, will transform the lives of millions of Nigerians.
Speaker of Arewa Youth, Mohammed Danlami said the N500 million and the building for the less privileged in the state would reduce housing deficit.
He said, “The donation to the Polytechnic by Chief Ume was done in other to support the infrastructural demands of the Polytechnic to create a conducive, sustainable environment for learning and support the Abia State Government’s mission to enhance literacy in the state, whereas the homes are meant to provide shelter for the less privileged and ease life for them in this difficult economic times.
“These are both commendable humanitarian acts exhibited by Chief Ume. It shows how large and pure his heart is, and we urge other Nigerians to emulate this philanthropic nature of serving the community.”
Danlami added, “Arewa Youth Assembly is very proud of the foundation and its founder, Ume, for all the positive contributions he has made to the advancement and development of several communities, institutions and individuals across Nigeria.
AYA said the entire Abia students, Nigerian Students, and Nigerian people are lucky and grateful to have Chief James Ume.
“While we call on the Founder of Unubiko Foundation, Chief James Ume, to not derail from this charitable and God’s path but continue impacting positively, we pray God almighty will continue to protect and guide him at
all times,” it added.
On his part, the National President, NAPS, Rowan Opeyemi Munir, described the donation and housing project as a remarkable gesture and a significant boost to the infrastructural development of the institution
He also said the gesture was an inspiring demonstration of commitment to education and national development.
NAPS said, “This initiative will not only address the pressing infrastructural demands of the institution but will also enhance the learning environment for students, promote academic excellence, and serve as a model for other philanthropic bodies to emulate.
“The transformation of educational institutions is pivotal to the progress of our nation, and the Unubiko Foundation has set a commendable precedent in this regard.
“NAPS acknowledges and celebrates this unparalleled act of generosity and vision by the Foundation, led by its esteemed Founder, whose unwavering dedication to the cause of education resonates deeply with our goals. This milestone is a testament to the power of collaborative efforts between private organizations and educational institutions to foster meaningful change.
“We encourage other well-meaning individuals and organisations to take a cue from the Unubiko Foundation by investing in education, as it remains the most enduring legacy for societal growth and sustainable development.” Also, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) expressed excitement over the N500 million infrastructure endowment to the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (formerly Abia State Polytechnic).
NANS said the founder of Unubiko Foundation has proven to be a pillar of education in the country and Africa at large.
NANS President, Lucky Emonefe said the association “Wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the Unubiko Foundation, founded by Chief James Ume, for its remarkable philanthropic efforts in supporting education in Abia State and beyond.
“We are particularly delighted to acknowledge the foundation’s recent donation of N500 million to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (formerly Abia State Polytechnic) to support the institution’s infrastructural development. This generous gesture demonstrates the foundation’s commitment to promoting quality education and empowering young Nigerians.
“Furthermore, we commend the Unubiko Foundation for its dedication to providing support to the less privileged in Abia State. The foundation’s efforts to build 56 units of two-bedroom homes for the less privileged, all solar-powered, are truly commendable.”
NANS assured Ume and the Unubiko Foundation that “Nigerian students’ community is solidly behind their philanthropic endeavours.”
“We will ensure that the donated funds are utilized judiciously for the growth and development of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, as well as for the advancement of education in Abia State and Nigeria.”
Similarly, the leadership of the Continental Student Movement – the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) said it is thrilled by the “extraordinary philanthropic gesture” of Unubiko Foundation.
President, All-Africa Students Union (AASU), Osisiogu Osikenyi praised the founder of Unubiko Foundation for his “Selfless act.”
AASU described Chief James as a “shining example of leadership, generosity, and commitment to education.”
AASU said, “This donation will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the institution, enabling it to enhance its infrastructure, resources, and academic programs.
“Your contribution will inspire countless students, faculty, and staff, and have a lasting legacy in the pursuit of excellence in education. We salute your vision, kindness, and dedication to empowering future generations.”
Attempting to chronicle all his interventions would be like attempting the impossible since he follows the biblical dictum of not letting his right hand know what his left hand is doing. He simply lives philanthropy and is committed to community and human capital development.

Driving Tourism Development through Calabar Carnival
Charles Ajunwa writes that the 2024 Calabar Carnival lived up to expectations
Fun-seekers from all walks of life stormed the 2024 Calabar Carnival, the 20th in series since its inception in 2004. From the UJ Esuene Stadium to Millennium Park through Mary Slessor Avenue and virtually all streets within Calabar, the Cross River State capital, fun-seekers who came out in their numbers explored not only the beautiful landscape adorned with attractive green spaces, welcoming green canopy trees, historical monuments such as the mind-blowing Mary Slessor Roundabout not forgetting the hospitable people and their nutritious delicacies. Overlooking the Millennium Park through Moore Road, is a large body of water separating Nigeria from Cameroon.
With lit up roads, and all-round 24-hour security surveillance in place, fun-seekers as early as 5a.m. on December 28 started to arrive the Millennium Park, venue for the flag-off of the biggest street party in Africa themed ‘Our Shared Prosperity’. Different carnival bands both competitive and non-competitive took over all the spaces around Millennium Park putting finishing touches to their work.
As build-up to the 2024 Calabar Carnival, three editions of dry run were put together by the organisers, which according to carnival’s international consultant, Ikechi Ukoh, was to enable people pick any one they want to participate in, and to guarantee the success of the carnival at the end of the day.
Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, who arrived the Millennium Park in company of his wife, Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu, all elegantly dressed in carnival costumes, before cutting the tape to officially kick-start the carnival, said the 2024 theme remained internationally engaging given the global audience in attendance at the Calabar Carnival.
According to him, “That shared prosperity is actually internationally engaging because we have the global audience right here; we have people from all continents of the world right here. There is a need to build economic, social, and cultural prosperity into what we are doing for our people to share,” Otu said.
He praised former Governor Donald Duke for initiating the carnival, and also thanked Senator Liyel Imoke and Prof. Ben Ayade, for sustaining the Calabar Carnival and introducing more competitive and non-competitive bands into the carnival.
Otu, who said that his administration would continue to build on and add value to the carnival, revealed that this year, a Diaspora band would be introduced into the carnival.
“Today is a great day in the calendar history of Calabar. We are indeed very, very humbled that we are celebrating about two decades of this particular event. And I know that we’ve been building and adding value daily.
“The buyers have increased. And we know even next year, because the diaspora is pressing very, very hard, we might be able to add the diaspora band that will come on full strength.
“But as Cross Riverians, we want to thank all those who have come, and we say come and live and share with us. I declare this open in the name of the Father, in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit.”
Kwara State Governor and Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, who attended the carnival together with Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, said the carnival apart from putting Nigeria on world map would also improve Cross River State’s internally generated revenue.
“This programme puts Nigeria on the map because it is a global event. What we don’t realise is the improved internally generated revenue of the state. If I look at it from the economic angle, not just the cultural angle, you see people talking about spending December in Lagos, but this is here to stay.
“Hopefully, next year, people will need to spend some days in Calabar before going back to Lagos; that is the joy of it all,” AbdulRasaq
said.
On his part, Governor Ododo praised Otu for showing leadership, noting his tenacity in state craft was evident in the energy and commitment displayed by participants and residents of the state, whom he said have completely bought into the carnival.
Chairman, Cross River State Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah, who acknowledged the contributions of the sponsors of 2024 edition, namely, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Afrexim Bank, MTN, Zenith Bank, Arise, International Energy Insurance Company, DSTV, and First Bank, implored them to take ownership of the tourism and hospitality sectors for sustainability.
“We are experiencing a rebirth. We are here to speak to the ignition of community spirit, to speak to the community of Africa, and what we are ready to offer the world.
“The dance party on the streets tells the story. The Carnival is allegorical, it is didactic, it is educational, it is theatre for development. “No wonder Afriximbank, Arias IIP, the IAI International Insurance, MTN, First Bank, UBA are here as sponsors. We thank you for this, but we believe that we can take over this sector and run with it for sustainability, competition, and appreciation by the communities,” Onah said.
Wife of Nigeria’s former President, Aisha Buhari who attended the carnival with her children, during the carnival parade which held at the Governor’s Adjudication Point close to Mary Slessor Roundabout, joined the carnival train at the end of the parade and became subject of discussions across the state as her presence they said added colour to the carnival.
Senator Florence Ita-Giwa who dressed in red flowing gown, wowed the crowd with her Buga dance steps which electrified the whole arena. The procession by the physically challenged received thunderous applauds from the crowd as they smiled, danced on wheels with placards with the inscription: ‘Say No to Violence against Women and Girls.’
Also in attendance were former Governor Duke; Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh; representative of Cross River South Senatorial District, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong and some international diplomats from the United Nations, the European Union and a host of others.
Others that graced the event include European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Gautier Mignot and his wife, Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yanko Yordanov and his wife, representative of United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Mr. Arjun Jain, Minister of State Industry, Trade and Investment, John Owan Enoh and his wife, former Minister of Culture, Edem Duke, Deputy Governor of Cross River, Peter Odey, Speaker of Cross River State House, Elvert Ayambem, APC Deputy National Women Leader, Hajia Zainab Ibrahim, APC State Chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar, State Consultant Calabar Carnival, Chief Richard Essien, 2024 winner of the Queen of Humanity, Her Majesty Glory Teta Ephraim, and many others.

The company, which has been one of the country’s front runners in long distance passenger transportation and logistics for over 45 years, recently inaugurated about four new branches in order to bring its services closer to its teeming customers.
Some of the new branches which have helped to boost service delivery this Yuletide season are in Awka, Enugu, and on Okota Road (near Cele bus stop on Oshodi-Apapa expressway), Lagos.
Chisco Transport has also deployed to various routes nationwide the newly procured brand new luxury and mini buses with the latest innovative features in the industry.
This is in addition to embarking on a comprehensive maintenance of the existing fleet of buses in order to ensure they are in roadworthy shape for trips across Nigeria and the Lagos-Cotonou-Lome-Accra international route.
Apart from advanced safety features like real-time GPS tracking and efficient safety systems, the new-look Chisco Transport fleet, featuring state-of-the-art buses, has all it takes to guarantee that passengers travel in style with their comfort and safety prioritised this season.
It was also learnt that the updated fleet has

All these, the leading transport solutions and logistics provider said in a press statement, are part of deliberate efforts to ensure seamless and comfortable bus and logistic services to the customers during the 2024 Yuletide season and thereafter.
Signed by the.Head of Business Operations, Mr Buchi Ochuba, the press statement explained that the same commitment to ensuring safe and comfortable trips out of major cities and towns before Christmas, would also be deployed to return journeys in the new year.
The Head of Business Operations hinted that the management is aware that the huge
investments the company has been making towards upscaling its services, recently earned it the Transport Company of the Year at the recent Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) Awards in Lagos.
Ochuba reiterated Chisco Transport’s resolve to sustain the high standards that have earned the company an enviable reputation, as well as continue investments in safety and comfort of travellers that have earned it the confidence of the travelling public and the auto journalists’ award.
“We appreciate the fact that in adjudging Chisco Transport the Transport Company of the Year, NAJA must have taken into consideration the high standards of our services, the over 50 new air-conditioned buses we procured recently, the new branches we inaugurated, our customer reward scheme and other investments we made to enhance passenger transportation and logistics,” Ochuba stated.
According to him, everything is in place to make certain that the teeming Chisco Transport customers all over Nigeria and on the international route enjoy top quality services, adding “We wish them a wonderful Christmas and a highly prosperous 2025.”
Chisco Transport also applauded President Bola Tinubu for the gesture of subsidising inter-state luxury bus transport fares by 50 percent this Christmas season.
Drawing attention to the importance of infrastructure to the road transportation business, the statement further commended the President for the appreciable allocations for the sector in the 2025 budget.

Toyota Nigeria Limited Ended 2024 Business Year on High, Emerged Auto
Toyota Nigeria Limited received the honour at the Nigeria Auto Journalists Awards held in Lagos on Wednesday December 11, 2024, bagging one of the biggest awards at last year’s event.
It was the first time any automobile firm in Nigeria would be receiving such major honour at the annual Awards, which entered its 13th edition this year.
This is the second landmark honour bestowed on the TNL at the close of the 2024 business year.
Just a few days earlier, the company was named as one of the top 50 brands in Nigeria, an annual assessment of top brands in the country.
TNL commenced operations in 1996 as a wholly indigenous and privately owned company, after it was appointed by Toyota Motor Corporation as its sole distributor in Nigeria.
The company, in partnership with its seven accredited dealers, has remained a forerunner in the marketing of Toyota products in the Nigerian automobile industry, providing exceptional services in auto sales,

Chairman of the NAJA Awards Organising Committee, Mr Theodore Opara, said despite being new in the Nigerian market, the brand was quickly able to secure a prominent place for itself in the highly competitive industry and received considerable attention from new car enthusiasts.
The committee, he added, had no difficulty in picking the brand as the fastest growing in the Nigerian auto market.
The name “Jetour” is a combination of the word “jet” and “tour”, which according to the automaker signifies a “convenient journey”. And its models try to depict this connotation in designs and performance.
Jetour Mobility Services said it considered the award a great honour, adding that it was a validation of its commitment to innovation and creating remarkable driving experiences.
The firm celebrates the award on its Facebook page with the following comments:

2024: A Year of Jollof Rice, Spilled Pepper Soup, and Empty Pots
As the curtains drew close on 2024, Nigerians, in our usual flair for blending comedy with tragedy, found ourselves with yet another stack of stories to tell - most laced with either incredulous laughter or head-shaking bewilderment. For a nation perpetually balancing on the tightrope of audacious resilience and self-inflicted absurdity, the outgone year felt like a pot of jollof rice cooked with burnt sides, a little too spicy, yet still satisfying for the hungry optimist.
When placed side by side, 2023 and 2024 appear like siblings who share the same chaotic DNA but wear slightly different disguises. If 2023 was the year Nigeria tripped and fell flat into the deep well of subsidy removal and naira depreciation, 2024 was the year we realized the well had no bottom. The transition from one year to the next felt less like progress and more like swapping an old pair of slippers for one with a broken strap. Nigerians had barely recovered from the shock of skyrocketing transport fares in 2023 when 2024 upped the ante with more inflation and the continued freefall of the naira. It was as though life had joined a comedy skit to test just how far the people’s resilience could stretch.
Yet, some would argue that 2023 carried more naivety. The buzz of a newly elected administration gave many the faint hope of a turnaround, like a gambler who thinks the next spin will finally deliver the jackpot. By 2024, however, that hope had hardened into weary pragmatism. The promises of “renewed hope” were rebranded as “adjusted expectations,” and Nigerians began to see governance for what it often is - a game of political poker, where the people are the chips, and the leaders are bluffing with straight faces. If 2023 was a rude awakening, 2024 was the year we finally rubbed our eyes, sighed deeply, and decided to get on with life, because, as every Nigerian knows, survival is not just a skill; it’s a full-time occupation.
January was the typical “New Year, New Me” charade for politicians, who promised everything from free power to free air. Amid the rising cost of living, some state governments deemed it fit
to “empower” the youth with wheelbarrows and clippers instead of addressing unemployment. Social media was not forgiving. Satirical memes compared these efforts to teaching a drowning man how to sew clothes instead of offering a lifeboat. Meanwhile, the average Nigerian, accustomed to braving storms without umbrellas, trudged through the month with resilience akin to that of a cockroach in a fumigated room. By March, our economic woes had deepened. The naira, struggling for breath, slumped further against the dollar, hitting an all-time low of ₦1,330 to $1. One might have thought the currency was auditioning for the Guinness World Records as the fastest depreciating legal tender. Traders at Balogun Market took to calculators, each keystroke sounding like a prayer for stability. The government, with its characteristic optimism, announced lofty reforms, including plans to “diversify the economy.” However, many Nigerians joked that “diversification” had become a mantra so overused that even akara sellers were

starting to package their wares as “multinational bean-based enterprises.”
The first quarter also brought its fair share of drama from Abuja. A controversial Supreme Court ruling sparked debates over the legitimacy of certain political appointments. Observers noted that in Nigeria’s judicial space, legal gymnastics often rival those seen in Olympic arenas. Ordinary Nigerians, however, remained less concerned with jurisprudence and more fixated on surviving the unrelenting fuel hikes. By April, when petrol prices breached ₦900 per litre, car owners became pedestrians, and roadside mechanics turned philosophers, offering unsolicited lectures on the virtues of trekking for cardiovascular health.
In the midst of these challenges, the entertainment industry offered some comic relief. Nollywood continued its love affair with dubious plotlines and extravagant premieres. An action film, reportedly budgeted at billions, garnered attention for its “special effects,” which social media critics derided as Photoshop’s weaker cousin. Musicians, on the other hand, outdid themselves, with Afrobeats stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tiwa Savage flying the green-and-white flag on global stages. Nigerians found solace in dancing to hit tracks that often masked the country’s deepening struggles.
Yet, not everything in 2024 was a joke. The reality of insecurity cast its long shadow over the land. From kidnappings in Zamfara to cult clashes in Rivers, headlines reminded us of a painful truth: our nation’s house was still riddled with leaking roofs. Government promises to strengthen security often felt like attempting to patch a dam with chewing gum. Nonetheless, a few bold reforms, including community policing initiatives, showed glimmers of hope, albeit ones overshadowed by recurring bureaucratic inefficiency. Sports, the eternal unifier, offered brief moments of jubilation. The Super Falcons gave Nigerians something to cheer about at the Women’s African Cup of Nations, narrowly losing in a dramatic final that had fans screaming at TV screens. “At least they didn’t lose 4-0,” someone remarked, a nod to our national obsession with silver linings. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Premier League continued its struggle
to gain credibility, with some stadiums still looking like relics from colonial times.
By September, discussions around national debt had taken centre stage. With the country’s total public debt exceeding ₦121 trillion, analysts debated whether our grandchildren would be born with IOUs taped to their foreheads. While the government attributed much of the increase to naira depreciation, critics argued that reckless borrowing had left the nation resembling a prodigal son with an overdrawn credit card. Satirists quipped that Nigeria was fast becoming a case study for IMF interns on “how not to manage a country’s finances.”
October brought fleeting relief as a record maize harvest was announced. However, this was quickly followed by reports of post-harvest losses due to poor storage infrastructure. Farmers watched helplessly as their sweat-fed produce rotted, prompting one farmer to lament, “Na we dey feed Africa, but na hunger wan kill us.” Food prices remained exorbitant, with tomatoes practically earning a spot on Forbes’ list of most expensive commodities.
Despite the trials, Nigerians found ways to celebrate. The yuletide season, as always, saw families splurging on rice, chicken, and fireworks, even if it meant borrowing money to do so. For a people whose humour remains an unshakable defence mechanism, 2024 reaffirmed a collective philosophy: if life insists on being bitter, at least we’ll garnish it with enough pepper to make it interesting.
As the year drew to a close, one could not help but marvel at the peculiar paradox of being Nigerian. We are a people whose laughter pierces through tears, whose hope defies logic, and whose spirit, no matter how battered, remains unbroken. Perhaps 2024 was not our finest year, but it was unmistakably ours - a testament to our dogged ability to dance even when the music fades.

Ola Aina Torn Between Citizens and Forest Contract
With captain and old reliable,KyleWalker, far from his best so far this season and, possibly be shipped out of the Etihad Stadium this winter transfer window,Manchester City are turning to Super Eagles wing back,OlaAina,as a replacement for the old war horse.Meanwhile,Nottingham Forest are putting pressure on the Nigerian to agree to a new deal with the club. The 2023AFCON silver medallist is therefore at crossroads between pitching tent with Pep Guardiola and signing a new contract with theTrickyTrees
Manchester City have reportedly identified Ola Aina as a Kyle Walker replacement, but Nottingham Forest are looking to tie the right-back down to a new deal. Forest have been one of the shocks of the season in the Premier League. After half of the campaign, they find themselves third on the table, behind Liverpool.
A number of the City Ground players have stood up this term, including rightback, Aina, whose form has been such that huge club, City, are tracking him.
The Premier League champions see Aina as a long-term replacement for current right-back Walker and with the Nigerian’s contract up in the summer, there could be danger of the Citizens snapping him up.
Aina’s form has been such that respected Skysports pundits, Jamie Carragher named him in his team of the season so far at the halfway mark in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old has equalled his highest Premier League goals tally, and has helped his side concede no more than a goal a game this term.
However, Manchester City may have suffered a blow in their efforts to sign the Nottingham Forest defender, as the Tricky Trees are optimistic of agreeing a new deal with.
The ex-Fulham man has been an unexpected success story for Nuno Espirito Santo’s surprise package, who entered 2025 in third place in the Premier League table.
Formerly a left-back, Aina has switched to the opposite flank to excellent effect this season, scoring two goals in 19 Premier League appearances for the Tricky Trees.
The 28-year-old has found the back of the net in victories over West Ham United and Brentford, largely playing as an out-and-out full-back but also doing a job as a wing-back.
However, Aina is now in the last six months of his existing contract at the City Ground, meaning that he is free to begin discussing pre-contract terms with foreign clubs.
Forest signed Aina on a free transfer from Torino in 2023, but if he does not extend his terms, they will have no choice but to entertain offers this month if they
wish to recoup a small fee for his services.
Manchester City are alleged to be keeping a close eye on the situation, but according to Football Insider, Forest are keeping their fingers crossed that they will soon find an agreement over a new deal.
Forest have supposedly been in dialogue with the defender’s agents for some time, and there is optimism from both sides that a renewal will go through without any major roadblocks.
Santo’s side qualifying for the Champions League or any other European competition would significantly boost their chances of keeping Aina, who had his terms extended by 12 months last summer.
Man City’s reported interest in Aina comes at a time when Walker is being strongly linked with an exit from the Etihad, where the Englishman is now in the last 18 months of his agreement.
A reliable performer in Guardiola’s backline for several years, the former Tottenham Hotspur man has come in for scathing criticism this season and is seemingly coming towards the end of his
Premier League career.
A return to boyhood club Sheffield United has been mooted for the 34-yearold Walker, who is understood to be weighing up his options for a possible exit either in January or the summer window.
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend, John Mikel Obi has heaped praise on Aina, acknowledging his impressive performances in the ongoing Premier League season.
Aina, a graduate of Chelsea’s academy, has been a standout player for Nottingham Forest under Nuno Espírito Santo, featuring in all 19 league games so far.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel, who once shared the pitch with Aina during their time at Chelsea, applauded the defender’s development and all-around improvement.
“He has had a good season so far,” Mikel said. “One thing he has added to his game this season is that he’s defending well. He is putting in a lot of crosses now and, of course, chipping in a couple of goals as well, which is absolutely fantastic to see.”
The 28-year-old’s stellar form earned him recognition as Nottingham Forest’s Player of the Month for November. He also won the Goal of the Month award, further cementing his importance to the team.
Mikel continued “Listen, we all knew he was a fantastic player at the club. He has gone to Forest and has been playing well since returning to the Premier League from Italy.”
Aina’s consistent displays have made him one of Nottingham Forest’s key players this season, as the Tricky Trees continue to push for success in the Premier League. It, however, remains to be seen if Aina would stay at the City Ground and continue his stellar performance or seek a new challenge at the Etihad Stadium
Man Utd Set to Swap Rashford for Osimhen
Manchester United could look to use Marcus Rashford as part of a swap deal to sign Victor Osimhen in the January transfer window, according to reports.
Rashford faces uncertainty over his future at the club after being dropped by Ruben Amorim and insisting he was ready for a “new challenge”.
The 27-year-old is said to be determined to earn a recall to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2026 World Cup. It’s expected that that is why a move to Saudi Arabia has been rejected.
MEN Sport understands that the forward has turned down three clubs in the Saudi Pro League in deals worth up to £35million. A career-driven move is the priority with the World Cup in just 18 months’ time.
Now, in the latest change of events, United are reportedly considering the opportunity to include Rashford in a swap deal to bring Osimhen to the club. According to The Sun, Napoli boss Antonio Conte could offer Rashford the platform to stay in one of Europe’s top five divisions.
In his place, Osimhen would move to United to bolster Amorim’s forward line. The striker was linked with the club in the summer before eventually joining Galatasaray on loan. But despite being on a season-long loan contract in Turkey, the 26-year-old could permanently leave Napoli in January. The poor form of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund has left United desperate for more firepower in the final third. Osimhen has scored 12 goals in 15 appearances this season to help Galatasaray go top of the Turkish Super Lig.
NFF Boss, Samuel, Promise to Attract More People to Fencing
Following the successful staging of the first fencing World Cup in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Nigeria Fencing Federation, led by Adeyinka Samuel, hopes to capitalise on the gains of hosting the tournament to grow fencing in the country
How challenging was it to host the first World Cup?
Hosting the first World Cup was quite challenging for several reasons. As it was our first time, planning was difficult due to uncertainties about the number of countries and participants. We also had to comply with several international regulations, and limited funds and support added to the challenges.
What inspired you to bid for the tournament?
Hosting international events is one of our four cardinal points. Our goal is to eventually host the World Championships, but to achieve that, we need to host a series of major international tournaments like the World Cup to gain experience.
What lessons were learned from hosting the tournament?
We learned many lessons from hosting the World Cup. We have requested the International Fencing body to schedule the tournament earlier in the year to avoid the December rush, as flights and accommodation are busier and more expensive in December.
Level of support did you receive from the private and public sectors?
For the scale of the tournament, we received limited support. We did get some assistance from private organisations like FCMB, Anais Kale, Marcelle Ruth, Viju, and Procari Sweat, as well as from the Nigerian Olympic Committee. Our biggest sponsor was Charterhouse Lagos
How would you describe the experience of hosting the first World Cup in Sub-Saharan
Africa?
It was a different experience from hosting other competitions due to more stringent rules and several considerations to meet international standards. Having observers from the International Fencing Federation and the Commonwealth Fencing Federation kept us on our toes.
What are the lessons for Nigerian fencers?
This tournament has been a major learning curve for our fencers. More training is required, but importantly, our fencers need to experience more international tournaments at a world-class level to gain the experience and confidence needed to excel.
How excited are you about hosting it at Charterhouse Lagos?
We are very excited to partner with Charterhouse Lagos. Their venue and facilities are state-of-the-art, and the senior management is very pleasant to work with. We received great feedback from international athletes, with some saying, “This is one of the top 3 venues in all the Junior World Cup tournaments in the world.”
What impact did the presence of British and Commonwealth Fencing Federations have on the tournament?
British Fencing is one of the leading fencing nations and was influential in putting together the International Fencing Federation’s constitution. Having the British Fencing President and the Commonwealth Fencing Federation present shows the international respect and
recognition we are gaining.
How do you intend to use the gains of the tournament to attract more people to the sport?
We plan to attract more people to fencing by regularly hosting top-tier tournaments in the country, where the world’s best athletes can inspire more people to join the sport. These tournaments are also gaining more international and national recognition, making them attractive to partners and sponsors.
What are the challenges and the way forward for subsequent events?
One of our biggest challenges was finding a suitable venue for major international tournaments, which we have now overcome. The next challenge is securing the right partners and sponsors to ensure we have enough resources to host these tournaments successfully. Despite limited support for this tournament, it was a success, and we are grateful.
Where do you see fencing in Nigeria in the next few years?
I see Nigeria becoming the leading African fencing nation, producing the most successful athletes, with fencing widely recognized and accepted across Nigeria. Considering Egypt’s strong fencing presence with Olympic medals, it would be significant for Nigeria to lead in Africa.
How do you intend to sustain the growth of the sport?
We plan to keep expanding our vision for the sport. Hosting a World Cup was a major goal, and now we are focused on hosting larger tournaments like the Commonwealth Championships.

In contrast, Manchester United are enduring a torrid run. A 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle on Monday marked their fourth straight loss across all competitions. Languishing in 14th place, they face immense pressure to stop their slide and
deliver a response against their fiercest rivals.
Elsewhere, Arsenal will travel to Brighton in search of a fourth straight league victory.
The Gunners recently brushed aside Brentford 3-1 to reclaim second place, as Mikel Arteta’s men look to keep pace with Liverpool in the title race.
Manchester City, fresh off a morale-boosting 2-0 win against Leicester City, will host West Ham United today.
Pep Guardiola’s side aims to build consistency after an uncharacteristically patchy first half of the season.
Chelsea, reeling from a 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town, must rediscover their form as they visit
Crystal Palace. The Blues are winless in their last three games, with Enzo Maresca under growing pressure to turn things around.
In today’s early kick-off, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Newcastle United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Alake and Matters Arising in the Mining Sector
Let us start the new year on this column by looking at the mining sector and some matters arising therein. This is particularly important because of the much-talked-about need for alternative streams of largescale income for the nation.
About two weeks ago the ban on solid minerals exploration and exploitation in Zamfara state was lifted by the federal Government. This was coming after more than five years of a “no fly and no go” zone imposed on the state’s miners, mining sites and environs, in 2019 by the Buhari government, due to serious security and humanitarian concerns.
Zamfara State and its home of large-scale gold mining, known as Bukuyum, is a place I have visited in the past. The grinding poverty and visible misery in that mineral-rich community presents a frightening contrast to the billions the land yields up on a regular basis to both legal and illegal miners. The long table of food times laid out at the local government headquarters during the visit was raided by half-clad, desperately hungry and partly bewildered looking children and youths. Some of those who helped to lay the table and place the food and plates joined in the free for plunder of the meal table. It was a pitiful sight to behold.
The expectation at the time the Federal Government imposed a ban on mining activities in Zamfara State, under President Buhari, was that the activities of bandits, and other security concerns, would abate in the wake of the ban. Many observers justifiably considered it a short-term emergency measure, especially given the perceived linkages between banditry and illegal mining activities in the area. But the expected gains did not materialize. Meanwhile, the ban was not lifted.
The decision to lift the ban last year was based on the current government’s perception, as announced by the Minister for Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, of “significant improvements in the security situation” across Zamfara state. It would appear that this development arose from new, intelligence-driven, and better-coordinated, security operations that led to the progressive and visible elimination of major leaders of criminal gangs and leaders of bandit groups.
The observable reduction in incidents of insecurity, as well the elimination or capture of some of the most wanted bandit commanders, like Halilu Sububu, in open and covert operation gave fillip to the recent decision to resume mining activities in Zamfara. But the essential point for me in all of this is the fact that the nation stands to gain much by the revitalization of mining activities in the Zamfara axis. Of course, with the necessary security, regulatory and other logistical entablements in place to guarantee sustainability.
While the ban lasted, the miners who were officially and formally granted lease by the mining cadastral office to carry out mining activities had to hands off, and stay off, the area. While these duly recognized miners were held in abeyance by the ban and the law, the space they left unmanned was taken over by non-state actors like bandits and illegal miners. The proceeds of these questionable mining activities were going into the pockets of individuals, especially bandits. Sundry marauders and other socially disruptive stakeholders were also the beneficiaries.
The massive quantities of gold, lithium, copper and other associated minerals in the state were thus being mined during the period of the ban, but not in the interest of the nation or its treasury. The positive security mileage that would have come from the ban, as well as the good intentions behind it, were
nowhere to be see. Instead, the ban unintentionally opened the space for unlawful activities that worsened the security problems in the area.
If the as much as 200 kilogrammes of gold could be found in the camp of the now-neutralized bandit leader, Sububu, can you imagine what has been going on with many bandit leaders like him in the last five years?
Yes, the ban has been lifted, as announced by the minister, but the illegal miners are still there. Yes, there was the Presidential Artisanal Gold Miners Initiative (PAGMI), under president Buhari, which was designed to bring the unlicensed fringe actors in the sector within a regulated umbrella. It was designed to ensure that the government and the nation block a revenue and resource leakage, in the interest of the national treasury.
But let us not forget that the whole point of renaming illegal miners and creating a presidential initiative
for their “domestication” is for them to be quickly brought within the Standard regulatory Environment (SRE) established for the sector. That is why PAGMI should perhaps be reviewed in such a way that a timeline for integration and better streamlined mining sector determined. Its relevance to the Solid Minerals Development Fund is understandable, but the ministry must decide now whether PAGMI should be retained in perpetuity.
As mining activities are now set resume in Zamfara, the minister must also consider the predicament of many companies whose facilities and machinery were vandalized and even taken over and badly damaged by illegal miners in the five years that the ban lasted. Yes, banditry is now “degraded” in Zamfara, but it is still there. The ruined communities still have many existential problems to deal with.
It is good that part of what the minster has put in place is a security tax force, known as the Mine Police, also now called Mining Marshal Police by some, to combat illegal mining and smuggling. But we must also worry about their capacities and military firepower, vis-a-vis, the bandits they have to contend with; especially bearing in mind the military grade training of some bandits. The Mining Act guarantees protection for all licensed miners, but it does not guarantee the quality, or dependability, of that protection.
Yet the good news remains. This is what the Minister had to say about the lifting of the ban: “The existential threat to lives and properties that led to the 2019 ban has abated. The security operatives’ giant strides have led to a notable reduction in the level of insecurity, and with the ban on exploration lifted, Zamfara’s mining sector can gradually begin contributing to the nation’s revenue pool”.
One thing is clear, namely, that the lifting of the ban will improve government regulation of mining activities in the state, especially after the “five years eaten by locusts”. It will also improve government revenue and give the mining sector an improved regulatory framework for effective intelligence gathering to combat illegal mining and ensure the nation benefits maximally from the state’s rich mineral resources.
As for the recent controversy surrounding the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Nigeria signed with France, there is no question of Nigeria
This ministry must be supported in its efforts to live up to its mandate of helping the nation to maximize the expected benefits of the solid minerals subsector. This sector is one sure route to economic diversification and the expansion of revenue streams for the nation. It is only with well thought out policies, regulatory guidelines, fiscal incentives and effective partnerships that the minister can administer all aspects of mining and mineral exploitation, such as issuance of permits, licenses, leases, collection of rents, fees and royalties, prospecting, quarrying, mining, handling, sale and consumption of solid minerals. And all of this on templates that are guided by global best practices.
relinquishing control of its mineral resources to, or entering into any military pact with, France. Not at this point in our national history. So far, available information suggests that the core of the MOU is on training and capacity building for mining professionals. Yes, we need further technical and financial capacity development and support in the sector and some of that can be provided by the French, but not at the expense of our national sovereignty.
Ours is a nation endowed with substantial solid, liquid and gaseous mineral deposits, for which extant internal capacities are not enough. We have such rare endowments as columbite, tantalite, beryl, aquamarine, lithium and tourmaline, besides gold, coal, tin, lead, zinc, limestone, granite, laterite, barite, gypsum, kaolin, marble, iron ore and wolframite. We need to bridge the gap between our natural endowments and our capacity for their exploitation. It is only through cleareyed technical partnerships, technological support, security of the operating environment and reforms and guaranteed regulatory compliance that the sector can be taken to greater heights.
This ministry must be supported in its efforts to live up to its mandate of helping the nation to maximize the expected benefits of the solid minerals sub-sector. In addition to the aforementioned minerals, our lithium, graphite and nickel, which are vital for the global energy transition of today places Nigeria in the spotlight, because of growing interest by global investors and rising global demand for these minerals. The unique opportunity to stan d forth as a key supplier in this emerging market is here with us. What needs to happen, in addition to the good works being done so far are: (1) Availability and accessibility of high-quality geological data. (2) Popularization of the National Integrated Mineral Exploration Project (NIMEP). (3) Improvements in critical infrastructure, like roads, rail, and power supply. (4) The leveraging of public-private partnerships (PPPs) to fund and develop such infrastructural support services. (5) The review of the existing incentives framework for mining, to determine whether it is sufficiently attractive to investors in the sector. (6) Disaggregating and evaluating fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to ascertain to what extent they are competitive and aligned with investor expectations and global industry practices.
Finally, the ministry and the minister need to keep
The Nigeria Mining Week in the front row of their enlightenment and public visibility programmes. It serves as a good forum for networking in the mining sector. The connections made, the opportunities, the conferences and technical sessions from each edition offer great opportunities. Stakeholders are enriched with knowledge, stronger industry connections, and a renewed sense of optimism for the sector’s growth. The minster’s surmising, that Nigeria Mining Week has evolved into more than a gathering of industry experts and is now “a powerful forum where we refine our shared vision, aligning our goals to create a robust, self-reliant mining sector in which Nigeria’s mineral wealth serves as the backbone of economic diversification, job creation, and community development, advancing our national interest for the benefit of every Nigerian” is easy to understand.
