Four Takeaways from Kamala Harris' Convention Speech

Sunday Ehigiator with agency report

Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday night, delivering a speech which hit the key notes her campaign wanted - but had only rare moments of soaring rhetoric and broke little new ground.

The ground-breaking was in the nature of the nominee herself - the first woman of colour to become a major party's presidential nominee.

“Never let anyone tell you who you are,” Ms Harris said. “You show them

who you are.”

But for roughly 45 minutes on Thursday, she tried to tell Americans who she is - and what she would do if she wins the White House.

BBC highlighted four takeaways from her convention-closing remarks.

1. Harris promoted her middleclass roots

Many Americans know who Harris is, but not many know what she believes in or details of her background. First and foremost, her convention speech set out to change that. She recounted her mother’s journey as

an immigrant from India. She spoke about how her parents met – and how they ultimately divorced. She talked about her childhood upbringing in a working-class neighbourhood in Oakland, California.

“The middle class is where I come from,” she said. “My mother kept a strict budget. We lived within our means. Yet, we wanted for little. And she expected us to make the most of the opportunities that were available to us.”

Harris also spoke of why she chose to become a lawyer – and a prosecutor. She drew a line from her early days in the courtroom to her public services as

a politician.

“My entire career, I have only had one client,” she said. “The people.”

2. A vision for the future - with few details

Harris’s speech included calls for unity and a pathway beyond the “bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles” of modern American politics.

She said that the US had a “precious, fleeting” opportunity to “chart a new path forward”. But that chart had few details.

Vague calls for unity and a path beyond partisanship are rhetoric many

KEKERE-EKUN MAKES HISTORY, BECOMES CJN, SENIOR LAWYERS SEEK REFORMS

History was made yesterday as Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-ekun was sworn in as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by President Bola Tinubu who administered the oath of office on her.

Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second woman to hold the position. The first woman was Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar.

Also, yesterday, some Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) listed several areas of reforms they believe would help reposition the judiciary.

The President charged her to remain faithful and loyal to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the discharge of her duties.

Speaking during Justice KekereEkun's swearing-in ceremony at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, the President stressed the enormity of the responsibilities that come with the position of a CJN, the head of all judicial institutions in the country.

Tinubu, further encouraged the Acting CJN to defend the judiciary's independence, promote justice, strengthen mechanisms for integrity, discipline, and transparency, and pursue reforms to sustain public confidence in the judiciary.

According to him: "Undoubtedly, the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria comes with enormous responsibilities as the head of all judicial institutions in the country. It is a position of considerable influence that demands temperance and sobriety, the occupant must espouse the highest level of integrity in the discharge of duties.

"This is more so because of the finality of the Supreme Court's judgement. I therefore urge your lordship to be faithful and loyal to the Constitution when discharging your duty as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria

"I also encourage you to defend the judiciary's independence, always promote course of Justice, strengthen mechanism for integrity, discipline and transparency in the judicial sector and

committee of the PDP may suffer a setback as a former Deputy National Chairman and member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, Chief Bode George, said he would not serve in the committee under the chaired by Chief Tom Ikimi.

This comes as the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Amb. Illya Damagum, has been asked to return to his office as the Deputy National Chairman, for which he was elected, for Justice to reign in the party.

Likewise, two former governors of the PDP in Benue State, Gabriel Suswam and Samuel Ortom have said there are issues dividing the party in the state.

Governors elected on the platform of the PDP met yesterday to weigh into the leadership crisis affecting the party.

The communique from the PDP Governors stated: "The Forum notes the political impasse in Rivers State where court judgements are employed to determine the outcome of the party congresses.

pursue other reforms or initiatives to sustain public confidence in the judiciary".

The President also pledged to prioritize the development and welfare of the judiciary and its officers, promising prompt and adequate attention to the sector, even as he emphasized the critical role of the Supreme Court in shaping public policies and evolving Nigeria's constitutional democracy.

He assured the judiciary of his administration's commitment to providing support, improving welfare and capacity, easing justice administration, and promoting the rule of law.

Tinubu particularly highlighted the recent 300% increase in judicial officers' remuneration through the Judicial Office Holder Acts of 2024 and the appointment of 11 Supreme Court Justices in December 2023, bringing the court to its full complement for the first time in decades.

His words: "We expect the apex court to continue to play a critical role in the evolution of our constitutional democracy and shape public policies that impact all segments of Nigerian society.

"I want to assure you that my administration will continue to provide appropriate support to improve the welfare and capacity of the judiciary, ease the administration of Justice and promote the rule of law in Nigeria.

"This consideration informed the expedited passage of the National Assembly and my consent to the Judicial Office Holder Acts of 2024, which approved a 300 percent increase in remuneration of judicial officers.

"This came on the heels of the appointment of 11 Justices of the Supreme Court in December 2023, which enabled the Supreme Court to attain its full complement of 21 justices for the first time in decades.

"Let me also reassure you that the judiciary, under this administration, will continue to receive prompt and adequate attention in recognising its status as a driver of social order, rule of law, peace, security and economic development".

Expatiating on the role the Supreme

Court has played in the nation's evolution, right from when it replaced the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in 1963, President Tinubu noted that the court has sustained the existence of the country.

"The Nigeria's Supreme Court has come a long way since it was empowered by the 1963 Republican Constitution to take over from the then Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the highest court in our judicial hierarchy.

"Since then it has played a critical role in the evolution of our country, resolving complex legal conflicts, even under the military, and shaping public policies that impact all segments of the Nigerian society.

"Late Justice Thurgood Marshall, the American civil rights lawyer and first African-Ameican Justice of the US Supreme Court, once said and I quote, 'the constitution is not a static document, but rather a living instrument that must be adapted to the changing needs of society'.

"Following this entrenched tradition of the apex court, our Supreme Court, under our constitutional democracy, also recently interpreted the 1999 Constitution regarding the financial autonomy of the local council. To quote Marshall again, 'it is emphatically the province and duty of judicial department to say what the law is'", he said.

The President commended the acting CJN for her remarkable rise through the ranks, from Magistrate to Supreme Court Justice, highlighting her exceptional talent, strong work ethics, and dedication to upholding principles and fairness.

Her ascension is seen as a beacon of hope for young women aspiring to break the glass ceiling and make a meaningful impact on society".

Tinubu noted her unique distinction of having practiced in every court as a lawyer, Magistrate, High Court Judge, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court Judge.

The President also expressed gratitude to the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, for his 33 years of distinguished service to the judiciary

and the nation.

Tinubu praised Justice Ariwoola's long and honorable service, wishing him a healthy retirement and expressing hope that his experience and expertise will be utilised in future capacities.

Speaking to reporters after being sworn in, Justice Kekere-Ekun appealed to all Nigerians to collaborate with the Judiciary to achieve the desired change and improve its reputation.

She emphasised that improving the Judiciary is a collective responsibility, requiring cooperation from everyone to build confidence in the institution.

The Acting CJN stressed that a better Judiciary benefits the entire nation and urged individuals to take personal responsibility for seeking justice.

She also highlighted the importance of a rigorous appointment process, discipline on the bench and at the bar, and faith in the system.

Justice Kekere-Ekun expressed optimism that, with God's grace, her tenure will yield a Judiciary that Nigerians can proudly behold.

Meanwhile, some senior lawyers who spoke to THISDAY on her ascension to the number one office in the judiciary, noted that the image as well as reputation of the judiciary was at its lowest.

"It is stating the very obvious that the prevailing public perception of our judiciary is nothing comforting. That being so, it is very imperative to take urgent steps to restore public confidence in the judicial system", Mr. Dayo Akinlaja, a SAN said.

Topmost on the mind of Akinlaja was the, "endemic problem of inordinate delay in justice delivery", which another SAN, Reverend John Baiyeshea observed is the"most critical problem that we have now in our system of administration of justice in Nigeria."

According to the lawyers, apart from political cases which are usually expeditiously heard by the apex court as a result of the limited term or number of years of political offices, other cases in other areas, particularly civil litigation take an average of 15 years ( or more in some cases), for such cases to have the slightest chance of being heard, from the time it is filed.

presidential hopefuls have used in the past. When Ms. Harris did turn to policy details, she spoke in generalities. She said she will be focused on lowering the costs of “everyday needs” – including healthcare, housing and groceries. She specifically called out abortion rights – and framed it as a means of preserving freedom, which has been a recurring theme at this Democratic convention.

“America cannot truly be prosperous unless Americans are fully able to make their own decisions about their own lives, especially about matters of heart and home,” she said.

3. An unchanged Gaza war message As pro-Palestinian protesters marched outside the convention, Harris devoted particular attention in the foreign-policy section of her speech to the Gaza war.

Medical Experts Sound the Alarm over Increasing Sudden Cardiac Deaths, Offer Preventive Tip

Onyebuchi Ezigbo

Sudden deaths, a tragic and often unexpected event, have become a growing concern in the country in recent time. Owing to this, experts are now calling for increased awareness and proactive measures to prevent these untimely occurrences.

Recent events have revealed that several factors, including underlying health conditions, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors, can contribute to sudden death. The rate at which otherwise healthy-looking persons suddenly fall and die is getting frightening. The slumping and giving up the ghost in most unexpected circumstances is alarming.

Due to public concern over the growing number of lives lost through sudden deaths, especially high profile personalities, THISDAY sought the opinion of medical experts to help draw attention to causes and what should be done to address the health challenge.

It is estimated that this health challenge is responsible for the death of 447,800 Nigerians annually equating to 27 percent of total deaths.

The danger posed by this killer disease situation should engender enough concern for stakeholders in the country's health sector.

cardiomyopathy while some might develop cardiac infarction which is called cardiac arrest or heart attack.

"So we are really worried and what we want the public to be aware of is first to able to identify that this disease is here with us and the risk factors are there such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, and the rest of them."

Furthermore, warned against lifestyles such as cigarette smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption. Odili advised that these unhealthy lifestyles are what Nigerians should be encouraged to drop in order to avoid the resultant health calamities. Most cases of sudden deaths resulting from heart failure or cardiac arrest often catch both the victims and those around them unaware, hence the fatality rate. Even the healthcare facilities most times get caught napping and are often ill-prepared to handle such emergencies. In some hospitals, their emergency response procedures are very abysmal and could lead to further aggravation of the victims' condition and reduce their chances of survival.

With the recent introduction of the innovative Emergency Ambulance Service by the Federal government it is expected that things will improve, especially with regards to response time to emergencies.

The PDP Governors slammed the federal government on the abuse of revenue by the President Tinubu-led federal government.

According to the communique, "The Forum notes with concern, the refusal of the federal government to distinguish between the Federal Government of Nigeria revenue and revenue accruing to the Federation which must be allocated in accordance with extant laws.

"We call on the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation to be more transparent in obeying the law, particularly section 162 (1) (2) (3). And equally, call on the Accountant General of the Federation to stop behaving like the Accountant General of the federal government and

"The PDP Governors’ Forum restates its stand with the Governor of Rivers State and will engage the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party to revisit the congress to correct the anomaly and allow His Excellency Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take his rightful leadership position of the party in the state.''

to exercise her role in line with the constitution.

"Therefore, we call for the separation of the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and that of the Accountant General of the FGN.", the PDP governors stressed.

On the #EndBadGovernance protests which held across the country recently, the PDP governors said they, "noted with a sigh of relief the end of the #EndBadGovernance protests which was edging to a major national crisis.

"We salute the dexterity of the Governors especially of the PDP extraction in handling the situation in their respective States with maturity, thereby restraining hoodlums and other unscrupulous elements from hijacking the protests.

"The Forum reiterates that peaceful protests are the inalienable rights of the citizens through which they vent their genuine grievances. The Forum commiserates with the families of those innocent souls that were lost and calls on the Federal Government to ensure fair and speedy trial of those who were

arrested."

Commenting on the economy, "The Forum laments that rather than undertake a review of macro-economic and social policies with a view to giving them a human face, the Federal Government has resorted to blackmail.

"We call on Mr. President to show statesmanship by restraining his officials from blame games, that make the sub-nationals look bad by mentioning piecemeal interventions that cannot solve the problem. We remain unshaken in our firm resolve to stand with the suffering Nigerian masses and to take all legitimate steps to ameliorate their plight."

On the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State, the communique said, "With regard to the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State, we condemn the pronouncements by the President to compromise the election in favour of his party as well as the systematic intimidation of PDP supporters by the Nigeria Police and call on the Inspector General of Police to call his men to order."

Experts linked the immediate causes of these unfortunate incidents to heart failure, cardiac arrest, high blood pressure as well as other underlying health conditions propelled by diabetes, obesity, and kidney or liver malfunctioning.

A professor of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Prof. Austin Odili, who spoke to THISDAY on the health menace described cases of sudden deaths as a phenomenon that could be traced to unhealthy lifestyles. He said that sudden deaths are mostly classified under cardiovascular causes, either uncontrolled hypertension, cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, or obesity.

Odili, who is the current president of the Nigerian Cardiac Society said the Society was concerned about the rising cases of sudden deaths in the country.

According to him, "The causes are many and are mostly classified under cardiovascular causes, either uncontrolled hypertension - some may have some cardiac diseases that were not detected and some may have what we call hypertrophic

Odili, however said what was of utmost importance to the Nigerian Cardiac Society was the response of people around when such health eventualities happen.

"What do we do as a bystander?

The Nigeria Cardiac Society is about rolling out a programme we callTake Back a Life" where we train members of the public on how to carry out emergency resuscitation (CPR) that may assist in reviving persons in an emergency."

Regarding the inadequacies in terms of healthcare manpower and facilities to manage critical health emergencies in the country, the University Don said it would pay Nigerians more to emphasise prevention, adding that the cost of prevention was far less than that of the medical infrastructure needed to address most of these diseases.

Odili, also spoke of the place of government's policies saying that such policy framework can help to address existing health challenges if implemented in a coordinated manner.

Police Rescue 20 Kidnapped Medical Students, House Officer

Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja

The Benue State Police Command yesterday, confirmed the rescue of all the 20 medical students and the House Officer that were abducted in Otukpo LGA of the State about a week ago.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP. Sewuese Anene in a text message to Arise News wrote, “Kidnap Victims rescued. Details will be released tomorrow morning please.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun had on Wednesday, deployed Tactical Squad for the rescue operation.

Anene had said the tactical squad, deployed to the state by Egbetokun, in collaboration with other officers on the ground, had intensified and doubled their efforts to rescue all the students.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has announced the release of the last victim of the eight prospective corps members who were kidnapped on August 17, 2023 on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to Zamfara along the FuntuaSokoto-Gusua Road

NYSC Director General, Brig. Gen. Yusha'u Ahmed, broke the news to the journalists during a press conference yesterday, in Abuja.

According to him, the rescue was in sequence.

"They were rescued in the following sequence. Even though they were taken at the same time, they were rescued in the following sequence.

"On the 30th of August, 2023, we rescued the first prospective co-member, Esundwe Emmanuel Emmanuel, Victoria Basi Oduka was rescued on the 20th of October, 2023. Abigail Hita Sandi was rescued on the 7th of December, 2023. Sabina Aniyewe Ika was equally rescued on the 7th of December, 2023.

Court, which affirmed his victory in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in the state.

The apex court held that the various judgements that dismissed petitions against the three governors at the tribunals as well as the Court of Appeal, were sound and not requiring the intervention of the apex court.

In the case of Bayelsa, the apex court affirmed the re-election of Diri as Bayelsa Governor, shortly after dismissing the appeal filed by

Timipre Sylva, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the lead judgement delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, the apex court held that Sylva's appeal was grossly incompetent and an abuse of court process.

The panel subsequently upheld the concurrent judgements of the Court of Appeal and Bayelsa Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which earlier dismissed the case for lacking in merit.

The Independent National Electoral

Commission (INEC) had declared Diri of the PDP winner of the November 11, 2024 governorship poll after he scored a total of 175,196 votes to defeat his closest rival, Sylva of the APC who polled 110,108 votes.

Similarly, the apex court in the Kogi matter dismissed the appeal by Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), for lacking in merit.

Ajaka had cited issues of alleged substantial non-compliance amongst others, as grounds for the apex

court to nullify the election of Ododo.

But, the apex court held that both the tribunal and the appellate courts were right in holding that Ajaka's evidence was not strong enough to sway them. Besides, the apex court further held that allegations of age falsification and certificate forgery are pre-election matters, which ought to be heard by the Federal High Court and not the tribunal.

Afreximbank: How We Facilitated $650m Financing for Oando’s Acquisition of NAOC’s 20% Interest in Nigerian JV

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) yesterday, announced that it successfully arranged a senior $500-million and a junior $150-million reserve-based lending facility for Oando Petroleum and Natural Gas Company Limited.

The facility was used to finance Oando’s acquisition of the 20 per cent participating interest held by Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited (NAOC) in the NEPL/NAOC/Oando Joint Venture in Nigeria.

A statement from the multilateral agency explained that the joint venture, with significant oil and gas assets, including oil mining licenses 60, 61, 62 and 63, has produced 4.4 billion barrels of oil and 12 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to date, with 1.2 billion barrels of oil and 10.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas remaining.

Afreximbank, retained as mandated lead arranger for the transaction, also served as bookrunner, coordinator, underwriter, escrow agent, facility

agent and security trustee, and also participated and underwrote US$350 million of the facility.

Also participating in the transaction were Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited, with US$150 million, and Mercuria Energy Group, with US$150 million.

Oando expects the acquisition to significantly enhance its production capacity from the current 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboe/ day) to 60,000 kboe/day, effectively

boosting Nigeria’s oil output and reinforcing the country’s position in the global energy market. It also expects the transaction to drive local economic growth by creating jobs, improving infrastructure and fostering technological advancements in the oil and gas sector.

According to the statement, leading the Oando participation at the closing ceremony held in London, on August 24, 2024 was the company’s Group Chief Executive, Mr. Wale Tinubu.

NUPRC, Indian Firm Partner on Automation of Regulatory Processes

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has made a formal visit to the headquarters of Infosys, a global leader in information system technology in Bengaluru, Indian, as part of its moves towards full digitisation of its operations.

A statement from the upstream regulator yesterday said the move was a significant step towards

fostering digital transformation in Nigeria's upstream petroleum industry.

Infosys is a worldwide leader in information system technology with about 320,000 employees and about $18.6 billion annual turnover. It provides support and services to the major oil companies, national oil companies and service companies in the petroleum sector as well as other sectors such as aviation, finance and so on globally.

The delegation, led by the Chief Executive of the NUPRC, Gbenga Komolafe, the statement said, was focused on exploring how Infosys' cutting-edge technological solutions could support the commission in achieving its regulatory mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

Central to the discussions, it said , were strategies to digitalise and automate key regulatory processes, streamline hydrocarbon accounting,

and ultimately plug revenue leakages to enhance government revenues.

Highlight of the visit was the strategic meeting between the NUPRC chief executive and Mr. Nandan Nilekani, the Chairman of Infosys. During the meeting, the NUPRC said both leaders shared a common vision of leveraging technology to drive transparency, efficiency and accountability in the petroleum sector.

Immigration Dismantles Unauthorised Border Checkpoints

Michael

Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI), Kemi Nandap, has dismantled all unauthorised checkpoints along Nigeria’s border posts.

Nandap, however, ordered routine patrols to completely forestall dangerous and unauthorised

elements from entering into the country.

She equally ordered the immediate submission of audit reports on manpower and logistics.

A statement yesterday by the spokesman of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kenneth Udo, said the CGI gave the order

at a meeting with Comptrollers of Border Commands and Commanders at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, the decision is aimed at ensuring efficient border security and migration management which are core mandates of the Immigration Service.

"The CGI charged them to be

dedicated to duty and underscored the significance of border security stating that Nigeria's current realities require extra layers of security at the borders to prevent infiltration by criminal elements that could fuel crises in the country.

"Nandap instructed that henceforth, Comptrollers are to

employ supervisory strategies, ensure timely report of major movements (entries and exits) and, professionally, handle sensitive intelligence requiring urgent attention with recommendations for enhanced border monitoring."

The statement added that: “These reports are to be submitted weekly through approved administrative channels.”

According to the statement, the CGI directed the “immediate submission of both Manpower and Logistics audit; and tasked Commanders on the need for a robust Inter-Agency collaboration for effective intelligence sharing.

Nigeria needs to fix sports management, facilities and the reward system, argues AYODELE OKUNFOLAMI

Aing teams returned home introspecting their performances. Botswana not only declared a public holiday after Letsile Tebogo returned with the men’s 200m but also gave its won’t be surprised if Saint Lucia builds a statue to honour Julien medals. While Jamaica and Ethiopia will have to reexamine their disastrous outings in the sprints and the long distance races the answers on how a nation of our size, pedigree and history will return with no medals.

Now, measuring sporting success is relative. In some instances, South Sudan that has no single indoor court, united its 40 plus tribes as if they landed on the moon despite crashing out in the preliminary basketball round whereas world number one, Iga Swiatek, returning to Poland with bronze in women’s single tennis was upsetting. Hence, there are many ways to post mortem Nigeria’s Paris Party.

Beginning with the size of our Olympic team, Nigeria is too big a nation to go with only 88 athletes. I am aware that one would have to go through competitive qualifiers by the various sporting bodies to have slots nevertheless, this reflects how Nigeria treats sports and general youth empowerment because I see no reason why we should not be representing Africa especially in team sports. Brazil, Argentina and Egypt that have similar economic trajectory and demographics always feature in volleyball, handball, basketball, football, field hockey and other team sports. What this implies is that these countries have functional domestic leagues or at least collegiate competitions that engage their youths enough to recruit for their national teams.

Progressive civilisations put a premium on sports and that was manifested on the size of their parade boats along the Seine at the first of its kind out-of-stadium opening ceremony and the eventual medals table. Despite not being the hosts that had the privilege of automatic places for all the events available, Team USA had the largest presence with 594 athletes partaking in more than 30 sports. Quantity has its own quality because the more chances we give ourselves the more likely we are to succeed. So depriving Favour Ofili from optimizing her six-year preparation to avoid burnout is pedestrian. It was the same games that Sifan Hassan ran four races totaling over 4okm yet podiuming with a gold and two bronzes.

Getting a larger vessel to usher us into future Olympics will require Nigeria reviving preexisting sports and venturing into unorthodox territory. We have a history in combat sports and they are relatively cheap to setup. All those hoodlums used by politicians to disrupt elections, illegally collect traffic tolls, counter protests and end up attacking Orile-bound BRT bus can be more productive to themselves and the society if taken off the streets, trained and employed as competitors or spars that fans can bet on them, watch weekly and end up representing the nation. Contrary to pattern, an Algerian became the first African to win gold in

The historicity of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry will not be complete without mentioning the name of Boniface Madubunyi and his Mabon Energy formed in 1983. It was he who pioneered and revolutionised seismic surveys of Nigeria’s ultra-deepwaters for oil and gas prospects.

Our paths crossed in 1997 when I was the energy, science and technology editor of Channels Television in Lagos. It was at the annual national conference of the National Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) at the MUSON Centre, where Tom Tier, an American director of Mabon Energy was part of the technical eggheads at the conference.

An indigene of Ihiala in Anambra State, Madubunyi, who died at 90 in London on May 13th, 2024, was born on December 12th, 1933. This amiable gentleman was practically unknown to the Nigerian public because he shunned being labelled a wealthy man or an entrepreneur, in spite of his cosmopolitan nature. Instead, he preferred a reserved style/ mein and being recognized or addressed as a professional consultant. He was an embodiment of hard work and humility. In recognition of his contributions to national development and society, he was awarded the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. His professional career spanned Norway, Sweden, Egypt, England, Congo Brazzaville and Nigeria. He worked with Seismograph Service Limited, later renamed Schlumberger as well as being a consultant to the NNPC and equally served as a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee constituted by Obasanjo to advise

artistic gymnastics. East and Southern Africans that are more long distance known are taking the sprints away from Nigeria and Ghana. My point is, while we consolidate on our track strengths, we can stretch ourselves into longer distances and field events. The climate and topography of the north suits camping out-of-school children to drop their begging bowls in exchange for running spikes to be trained marathoners. All the youths of the Niger Delta need is coaching and Nigeria will add swimming to its Olympic portfolio. Although, there are awkward sports like horse dancing, the Olympics are globalizing to include breakdancing and I bet you, the worst Nigerian dancer will do better than that Australian in Paris. If our girls could well in basketball, it means we can do well in 3x3. It is a matter of maximizing our human and natural resources.

Unfortunately, with schools sports a thing of the past, playgrounds turned into housing estates without jogging or cycling paths, and prisons without sports facilities, I can as well keep this article for republication after Los Angeles 2028.

A societal and cultural revolution needs to take place for Nigeria to be called a sporting nation, we have to do something drastic about sports administration. Because sports success is a function of individual will and a supportive society.

Worse than having political jobbers across board ignorant of the sporting federation they head, is that they not only lack basic administrative acumen but are unable to connect with the needs of the athletes under their care. Ofili’s issue was messier because asides being a repeated case of negligence, she only realized she had been omitted from the 100m a few days to the event.

We saw how other countries flag embraced their athletes as ours were left orphaned. What were the administrators doing in Paris? Sherika Jackson pulled out of the 100m and was replaced by another Jamaican to take her place. How come Ofili wasn’t restored to compete? America is doing all to get the bronze stripped them by Romania in gymnastics while Kenya contested and regained within minutes the silver striped them at the 5000m women. I am yet to understand why our 4x400m men were denied a place in the finals they had qualified for. All I can deduce is that our administrators don’t care about our athletes enough to even kit them properly or provide bicycle to compete. Do they follow up athletes’ individual training regimes or just call them up for competitions? This is how Annette Echikunwoke that dumped Nigeria three years ago to win silver in the women’s hammer throw summarised, “Being with the US, feeling cared for as an athlete, I really performed on top of my game.”

GETTING A LARGER VESSEL TO USHER US INTO FUTURE OLYMPICS WILL REQUIRE NIGERIA REVIVING PREEXISTING SPORTS AND VENTURING INTO UNORTHODOX TERRITORY

his administration on fuel, energy, mines and the mineral sector.

A devout Catholic and son of a catechist and teacher, Madubunyi, when asked when he would retire as he was still actively hard at work despite his advanced age, retorted: “The pope, who has the world as his constituency, still works!” He was a man imbued with taste, class, and sophistication.

His Mabon Energy in 1991, undertook on behalf of the federal government the first nonexclusive seismic oil and gas survey of 24,000 kilometers of deep offshore Nigerian waters. The seismic survey and the resulting data generated by the company exposed the nation’s oil and gas potential to the global community. The main objective of this 2D survey was the production of a regional geophysical and geochemical data acquisition data base, and its biostratigraphic interpretation aimed at increasing Nigeria’s crude oil and gas reserves.

The availability of this data enabled the federal government to carry out the first bidding/licensing round for oil and gas acreages/blocs. Also, acting in conjunction with its American partners, Texas A & M University, Mabon Energy provided the first ever geochemical study program involving coring and oceanographic studies of the country’s waters. In 1993, Mabon Energy again executed another seismic, gravity and magnetic data survey covering an area of 6, 990.40 kilometers and was accompanied with biostratigraphic analysis of key oil and gas wells.

Subsequent surveys were carried out by the same firm covering 10,899.5 kilometers of seismic and 33,390 sq kilometers of gravity

Moving forward, John Enoh, the Sports Minister, had apologized for the abysmal showing and has suggested reforms of our federations. However, he shouldn’t be sounding helpless on tv and radio. As a member of the federal executive council, he should bring up proposals and policies with presidential backing that should change the sporting structure he goes whining about. As a former Senator, he can send his proposals to the national assembly so that they become law.

magnetic survey, the digitization/compilation of existing seismic data of 216 oil wells covering an area of 12,000 kilometers in the Niger Delta, and in January 1999, Mabon Energy executed another seismic survey covering 7,012 kilometers of very deep offshore waters. Oil and gas fields generated from the various seismic and other surveys undertaken by the company include Bonga, Agbami, Akpo, Erha, JDZ and Abo.

The economic and other benefits that accrued to the country as a consequence of the seismic and other survey works are enormous. For starters, Mabon Energy paid over $20 million as royalty and taxes to the federal government, over $2billion direct revenue accrued to the government from the licensing/development of new acreages, increased investments by Exxon, BP Statoil, Total, Conoco and foreign/local oil firms, revealing the nation’s unexplored massive hydrocarbon reserves, acquiring and processing the proprietary geophysical data on OPL 91for NPDC, etc.

In July 2007, Mabon Group as part of its corporate social responsibility submitted to the federal government, a line of action it termed non-subsidy solution to the petroleum products supply crisis in the country. July of same year, the group submitted another proposal on modalities to fast -track economic development and growth in Nigeria. It advised the federal government to focus on six critical sub-sectors of power, petroleum products supply, job creation, water supply, road infrastructure and public mass transit it identified as crucial to catalyze the nation’s ambition to develop economically.

Another landmark project undertaken by the

Mabon Group is the Dadin Kowa 34/39MW hydropower dam in Gombe State.

Apart from his achievements in business, Madubunyi also established a foundation named after him that is dedicated to medicine and education.

Since his passing, tributes have poured in from family, friends, business partners (home and abroad), political associates, traditional and religious leaders, including the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo, former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, the Catholic bishops of Minna and Benin, Martin Uzoukwu and Augustine Akubeze, respectively.

Obasanjo in his tribute said: “Engr. Madubunyi had, over the years shown that his astute business acumen was matched only by sheer doggedness and determination to succeed in whatever ventures he undertook. It is thus not surprising that he had the way of indigenous participation in several areas of the economy especially in the oil and gas as well as energy and power sectors.

“He enshrined his name in our collective consciousness through his prodigious courage, especially patriotism, stoic perseverance and visionary leadership. An employer of labour, a philanthropist, Madubunyi’s selfless service to the country and exemplary leadership will be greatly missed by his community, local government area, state and the nation in general.”

The late octogenarian is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nkiru Madubunyi, three children and grandchildren.

When will it be over?

The Importance of School Farms

Agriculture is one of the earliest occupations of mankind. The Holy Scriptures, in Genesis Chapter 1, Verses 26-30; and in particular, Genesis Chapter 2, Verse 15; tell us that when God created man, He gave him the work of cultivating the garden, and then reaping its fruitage. God also put all the animals under the care of man. Thus, the main work of man came to be ‘Agriculture.’

According to one senior secondary school textbook (Essential Agricultural Science, by O.A. Iwena): “The term, ‘Agriculture’, is derived from two Latin words: “ager”, meaning field, and “cultura”, meaning cultivation. By this statement, agriculture means field cultivation. However, this is not a complete definition of agriculture, since agriculture has to do also with animal production. Agriculture is simply defined as the art and science (or management) that deals with the cultivation of crops and the rearing of animals for man’s use. In other words, agriculture is defined as the deliberate effort made by man to till the soil, cultivate crops and rear animals for food and other purposes. It also involves the sales of produce from agriculture, because production is not complete until the produce gets to the final consumer.”

However, in spite of the important role of agriculture in our economy, many present day pupils and students lack the knowledge of basic agriculture, agriculture business, and indeed the entire agriculture value chain – the process through which food gets from the farms to dining tables. It is indeed a sorry situation when school children in Nigeria, a country widely acclaimed for its rich agricultural heritage (and whose name probably has some relationship with one of the Latin origin words for agriculture (ager) – perhaps (LoL!)), do not have the privilege of experiencing practical agriculture during their schooling. To curb this problem, the practical aspect of agriculture in the school’s curriculum should be given equal attention as the theory.

Several factors have been highlighted as contributing to the non-availability of school farms to support practical agriculture classes in schools. These include: encroachment of land by developers and members of host communities of schools; use of land for other non-agriculture-related projects; lack of adequate infrastructure in schools, hence, no space set aside for cultivation; un-affordability of farm inputs by schools; lack of funds to sustain the cost of farm inputs; bush burning; deforestation as a result of human activity – thereby destroying the fertility of the soil; changes in weather; erosion; insecurity; among others.

School farms are not just spaces for growing food items. They are complete learning zones, which largely succeed in taking learning to new heights. School farms come in handy when it comes to teaching a variety of topics in agriculture, be it crop rotation, mixed cropping, inter-cropping, etc.

For a successful school farm, implements and practical equipment should be purchased and distributed. And, whenever the school records bumper harvest, the pupils/students can be fed from the produce, while proceeds from the ones sold can be used to develop the school.

The knowledge obtained from practical sessions on the school farm helps not only to re-enforce what is taught in the classrooms. It also teaches pupils, and students alike, about eating healthy, about how food arrives our homes from the farms, etc. It also equips the pupils/students with first-hand knowledge of how to run agribusinesses. This is especially important in cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit in the students.

Sympathetic Syndromes?

Sometimes the comments are more interesting than more colorful. A recent comment referred to “Trump derangement syndrome”.

In the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, school farming was a major component of the schools’ curriculum, and there were no exemptions as to who participated in practical agriculture and who did not. All pupils and students trooped to the farms at the designated time. The idea behind this was to make agriculture an integral part of the school culture, so the pupils and students are well positioned to appreciate farming, and make it a lifestyle, even when they do not intend to specialize in it.

It is important that schools be provided with necessary logistics for the successful implementation of the whole agricultural science curriculum, while the school farms serve as fields or laboratories for the training of the pupils and students, with the basic focus being on skills development and self-reliance.

Education Minister Gives Account of Stewardship in One Year

To meet ASUU Monday over 43-year-old debacle Says enrollment increased from 30 to 55 million in basic, non-formal education

The Minister of Education, Prof. Mamman Tahir, has revealed that in living up to the mandate of President Bola Tinubu towards ensuring that strikes are a thing of the past in the nation's tertiary institutions, the ministry has invited the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for a meeting on Monday, August 26.

Addressing journalists yesterday in Abuja on the 13 pillars and focal points of his one year in office, Tahir said some of the issues consistently being raised by the union are historical while some are agreements that started since 1981 and have been inherited from one administration to another. While noting the legality of the union's demands, he stated that so far, payment of 50 per cent allowances being withheld from members of the

union have been released based on court judgement.

He said the ministry, as well as other MDAs are working round the clock to resolve the issues towards ensuring that the mandate of the President when he assumed office is met with the hope that there will be no strike.

"We need to be clear on what ASUU wants so far. What they have done is to declare a trade dispute and it is

after that, that they will go on strike.

"I have been signing series of letters and we are working on solving the issues. Some of them are historical issues while some of them are agreements that started since 1981. So every administration inherited the problems of ASUU, ASUP and COEASU.

"So, we have already invited them to come on Monday in the afternoon and after the meeting, we

Edo Indigenes in Europe, US Endorse Ighodalo for Governor

Adibe Emenyonu in Benin-City

With less than a month to go, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Asue Ighodalo and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, have firmly secured the endorsement of the highly influential segment of the Edo society - the Edo Diaspora both in Europe and the United States of America.

This followed their hugely successful tour of five cities in Europe and three in the United States, where they engaged hundreds in fully packed halls,

sharing their visions and dreams for Edo State that are succinctly captured in 'The Pathway to Prosperity for All' manifesto.

In Edo State, the Diaspora community plays a very significant role in influencing the pattern of voting back home. The engagements which began on Monday, June 24, ran through June 29 for the Europe itinerary and saw them holding crucial meetings with sons and daughters of Edo State in five major cities across Europe.

The first port of call was Reggio Emilia, Italy, on June 24th. He then moved to Manchester, UK, on 26th; London, UK, on 27th; Hamburg,

Germany, on 28th and Nuremberg, Germany, on 29th of June.

In all these engagements in Europe, the outcome was the same - an unequivocal endorsement of Asue/Ogie aspirations and visions for the state.

"The Edo Diaspora communities, having interacted with them, listened to their presentations and answers to their questions, and convinced of the clear and unambiguous difference between the PDP candidate and other candidates, are resolute that Dr. Asue Ighodalo should be the next governor of Edo State."

In a statement in Benin City, and made available by the PDP

Campaign Council led by Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, the duo of Ighodalo and Ogie, including Ighodalo's wife, Ifeyinwa, then stormed the United States of America last week from August 12 to 16, where they met with the people in Houston, Texas; Atlanta and New York, recording huge successes in all the outings.

Somebody reportedly joked openly that: "This is our choice. He knows the difference between a Zoo and a Museum," to a roaring, hearty laughter. Of course, that Ighodalo is the choice of the Edo Diaspora communities is hardly surprising.

Mpox Vaccine in Short Supply Globally, Says WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said the capacity of the current manufacturers of Mpox vaccine cannot meet global demand unless there was some form of intervention to scale up production.

According to the organisation, reports on the Mpox disease spread still showed that the epicenter for the new emergency of international concern was in Central Africa and neighboring countries.

The WHO Country Director in

Nigeria, Dr. Walter Mulombo, stated this Abuja, while giving an update on efforts being made to control the virus.

With regard to the situation in Nigeria, Mulombo said the country was presently not at high risk.

"It's moderate risk, but we need to continue to remain vigilant because we've cases reported as far as Europe or Asia and Nigeria is not safe until this overall event is safe.

"So, we'll continue to work with the government to strengthen public health measures that are needed to control the outbreak. Well, you've

heard that Nigeria will be receiving a number of doses of vaccine through donation from the U.S. government. The needs globally are huge.

"The vaccine is in short supply, the capacity of the current manufacturer cannot meet the global demand unless some kind of intervention is there.

"So, I'm sure the U.S. government will be able to inform on the date of arrival. We've heard from National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) representative, the vaccination strategy, which is in line with the recommendation of WHO

to target the people at highest risk and those who have the disease and their contacts as well as their workers.

The WHO director said laboratories in Nigeria would be optimised to get the patients tested if more spread of the virus is reported.

"The good news, is we are building on a system that's already strong as a result of exposure to COVID-19 pandemic. We have a lot of molecular labs. It's just a matter of scaling a bit the capability and which I think is within Nigeria's reach anyway," he said.

are hoping that it will not reach the extent whereby they'll go on strike.

"They've paid 50 per cent of allowances withheld based on the court judgement. We are working the clock to resolve the issues to ensure that the mandate of the President when he assumed office is met."

In his success story, he said so far, a total of four million out of school children have been enrolled into schools nationwide with the Federal Capital Territory registering not less than 20,000 children in the last two weeks.

He disclosed that in total, enrollment of children in basic education as well as non formal education has increased from 30

million to 55 million and four million children will be taken off the streets annually in the next three years of the present administration. Also, 40,000 facilities for various schools at basic and non formal education, as well as 6,500 boarding facilities which includes auditorium, classrooms and hostels have been established, as well as 44 high schools nationwide.

"We have been able to capture four million out of school children through four agencies. In this, 20,000 young children were registered in Abuja in the last two weeks. With the number achieved in the last one year, four million children will be brought out annually in the next three years.

Sunday Aborisade in Abuja

Leaders and critical stakeholders in the Niger Delta region yesterday paid a solidarity visit to the leader of the Pan Niger Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark.

They urged the nonagenarian to call on President Bola Tinubu to end the ongoing fuel scarcity and reverse the removal of the oil subsidy.

The delegation of the eminent leaders was led by the President, Host Communities Producing Oil and Gas in Nigeria, (HOSCON), Benjamin Style Tamaranebi.

They also alleged that the International Oil Companies ( IOCs) and others, were deliberately frustrating the Dangote Refinery from accessing crude oil from them for local refining and production.

Tamaranebi, who spoke on behalf of the eminent leaders from the region, lamented that as a result of the scarcity, a litre of PMS was now being sold at N2,000.00 in most parts of the Niger Delta.

He described the development as unfortunate because exploration and exportation of crude oil was taking place in their areas.

He alleged that the IOCs were not helping matters as they refused to sell crude to Dangote Refinery which has 650, 000 litres capacity per day . Tamaranebi said, "Our visit to the residence of our leader and father in the Niger Delta Region today, is to voice out our displeasure to the federal government and in particular, publicly owned key players in the oil sector on the endless fuel scarcity in the country.

"It is a sad commentary to state here that a country like Nigeria, an oil producing nation, the second largest oil producer in Africa, that has four refineries is still suffering from endless fuel scarcity and bent on importation of refined petroleum products to her country for over 20 years.

"Only recently, some Nigerians trooped to the street in all parts of the country to protest against hardship in the country. Some of them were calling for the re- introduction of oil subsidy.

“We are aware that the current fuel scarcity in some parts of the country is caused by marketers' refusal to import petrol into the country due to the huge debt issue.

United States Says No Plan to Establish Military Base in Nigeria

The United States has said the idea of establishing a military base in Nigeria was never on the table. Speaking to journalists on what is next line of action for US government after scrapping it military base in Niger, a decision it took aftermath worldwide criticism of military take over of democratically elected government in the West African country, the Department of Defense West Africa Coordination Element Lead, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). Maj. Gen. Kenneth Ekman, said though it was natural for anyone to suspect that Nigeria would have been the natural destination to establish an American military base due to its closeness to Niger

and its strategic position as well as cordial relationship with Nigeria but there was never any such plan at any time.

He said, “I am aware of no discussions between U.S. and Nigerian authorities on placing a U.S. base in Nigeria as a result of the Niger withdrawal.

“So if strategy is war on a map, and if the problem we're trying

to solve is Sahelian-based violent extremism, and if the U.S. is not functioning in Niger, then where should we be? That's what led us to an outside-in approach relative to the Sahel. Does that make sense? So outside-in. And then anytime you talk about outside-in, the important question is, what is Nigeria's role, given the strength of the nation, given the closeness

Sacked Staff Drag CBN to Court, Demand Payment for Entitlements, General Damages

Seriki Adinoyi in Jos

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been dragged to National Industrial Court (NIC) by over 100 of its staff that were recently sacked under the bank’s re-organisation strategy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, demanding payment for damages and entitlements among others. Over 100 suits have so far been filed by the sacked staff of the apex bank challenging their abrupt and unjust termination of services while still having some years to go.

Lead Counsel to some of the affected staff, Mr. Ola Olanipekun (SAN), on Thursday made the court documents available to select journalists in Jos.

He said his claimants approached

the court to enforce their right to fair hearing as workers who have been unjustly sacked by CBN.

He explained that the unlawful action of the apex bank has caused monumental damages to his clients running into hundreds of millions of Naira, adding that they are praying the court to ensure that the defendant pay all the claimants their monthly salaries, allowances and other emoluments/ entitlements.

Olanipekun noted that one of his clients who still have nine years of service left with the Bank would have earned, if his employment had not been unlawfully terminated, a sum of N1,621,455.70 monthly as evidenced by his salary payment, and such other monies in that regards as his current or subsequent promotion position/

grades would be entitled.

He is praying the an order of the court to ensure that the defendant shall pay forthwith all monthly salaries and allowances that the claimant would have earned in the course of his service/employment, being the sum of N178, 360,127.00 or such other sums in that regard, from the effective date of unlawful termination of his appointment up and until his due date of lawful retirement on 4th August, 2033.

The counsel said that the claimant is also praying the court to ensure that the sum of N100,000,000 million is paid to him as General Damages against the defendant, for wrongful termination of his contract of employment. Meanwhile, the sum of N30,000,000.00 as the cost of litigation/

prosecuting the suit is also demanded from the defendant with 21 per cent post judgment interest, per annum, on all judgment sums awarded, from the date of judgment until the entire judgment sum is wholly defrayed/ liquidated as well as further orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of the case.

Olanipekun explained that the Originating Summons dated 22 August, 2024 is supported by a 27 paragraphs affidavit deposed to by the Claimant himself.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had sacked over about 200 of its staff in May, 2024 through a letter titled, 'Reorganisation' of the CBN, and that has unsettled the affected staff who are now demanding for entitlements and payment for damages.

Enugu Generates N35.9 Billion from Tax in Seven Months

The Enugu State Government has announced that it generated the sum of N35.9 billion as tax revenue between January and July 2024.

Executive Chairman, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Emmanuel Nnamani, made this known yesterday while addressing journaists on the first year activities of the ESIRS.

Nnamani said that the government also generated N33.9 billion from

taxes in 2023, a significant increase upon the N2.3 billion it met on assumption of office, adding that Enugu State currently records an average tax collection of N5 billion monthly.

He noted that the success recorded so far was as a result of the proactive efforts of the state government, which includes the activation of dormant taxes and expansion of the tax net to include businesses that were formally not paying their taxes.

“For instance, when we came in,

we discovered that companies that should be in the formal sector mixed with the informal sector and were not filing their PAYE and withholding taxes. We had to bring them in,” he explained.

Speaking further, he said "We activated the collection of capital gain tax arising from sale of lands at the Ministry of Land and Housing and that meant that for every consent, there must be capital gains tax paid. We also activated the purchase tax that

hitherto was in the law but was not implemented.”

He explained that the government has also expanded the payment gateways to include platforms such as Moniepoint, Interswitch, Quick teller, E-transact and Flutterwave to ease the process of tax payment for businesses in the state.

He said that the enforcement of the taxes didn't not come without pushbacks, noting however, that the backing of the state Governor, Peter Mbah, made the process a lot easier.

Senator Kingibe Offers Support to Victims of Abuja Market Fire

Sunday Aborisade in Abuja

of our partnership? So it's a very natural question.

“And I'm not surprised that some people assumed that there were discussions going on about this.”

He revealed the US has no plan to build any big military base anywhere else in West Africa, adding that “if Niger allowed the US to work with partners to go inside-out, for lack of access to Niger, we are now focused on an outside-in approach. And so countries where we're having conversations, countries where we have started putting some forces, include Cote d'Ivoire, Benin, we have some U.S. forces there now.

I'm going to Accra next.

“I'm keenly interested in what their authorities have to say. It's got

to be right for the partner. And then I was just in N'Djamena a couple of weeks ago as we talked about the next phase for the posture of U.S. forces.

“In all cases, we're starting with just small elements, small special operations teams that provide advice and assistance and training to the host nation forces. And so that's the steps for what next. I think that big bases are just not right for the environment.”

On the withdrawal of the military presence from Niger, Ekman said:

“We're almost done. We've achieved, together with our Nigerien partners, the safe, orderly, and responsible withdrawal of U.S. forces. A couple of key milestones within that.

James Sowole in Abeokuta

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, yesterday, flagged off the reconstruction of the 70-kilometre

Abeokuta-Ifo-Ota-Lagos Expressway with a pledge to complete it in 18 months.

The governor, who performed the flag-off at Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area, noted that the road is significant not only to Ogun State but also to Lagos State and the nation, as it provides a thoroughfare for people going to the neighbouring country.

Attempt to reconstruct the road was first conceived in 2019, but all efforts to convince the federal government to release the road to the Ogun State Government proved abortive. According to the governor, "The plan for the reconstruction of this road did not just start today because we have the interest of our people at heart. We know this is a federal government road, and the state had to follow the due process before getting the required approval to commence the reconstruction. "This road was awarded 2003, but since then, it has suffered insufficient funding, resulting in contractors working and many times abandoning the road at times for a year by when the roads would have suffered degradation. Our people have suffered too much travelling on this road, but today Hope is Renewed.

Destiny, who is the head of Senator Kingibe's Constituency Office, thanked God that no life was lost and advised the affected traders to be optimistic of receiving support.

The NMA Anambra branch disclosed this in a statement signed by Dr. Princeton Okam and Dr. Ifeanyi Obiaeli, respectively, at the end of its Emergency General on Thursday evening.

The NMA said the directive followed the kidnap of their colleague, Dr. Stephen Ezeh, who was kidnapped and still being held in captivity since Aug. 15.

FG, W’Bank to Raise Land Titling Rate to 50%, Nigeria Secures Deal for 5,000 Housing Units

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has said that the federal government was exploring a partnership with the World Bank to increase the rate of land titling nationwide from its current 10 per cent to 50 per cent in 10 years.

The minister who spoke in Abuja during a ministerial press briefing on the achievements of the ministry in the last one year, also announced a deal with Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB) to fund the construction of 5,000 housing units in the country.

“This framework for advisory services and financing towards the construction of 5,000 affordable housing units under the Renewed Hope Agenda is a first in the ministry’s history,” Dangiwa stated.

Through the land titling drive, Dangiwa stated that by recording land transactions and ownership, and implementing advanced digital tools and technologies, the ministry seeks to ensure efficient land data management and accessibility for all stakeholders.

“As part of our land reforms

we are exploring a partnership with the World Bank towards the implementation of a National Land Titling Programme (NLRDP) Through this programme, we aim to partner with state governments towards improving land formalisation from the less than 10 per cent to 50 per cent in the next 10 years.

“Through this initiative, the government through the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development aims to establish a comprehensive, efficient, and accessible land registration system across Nigeria in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda President Bola Tinubu.

“By recording land transactions and ownership, and implementing advanced digital tools and technologies, the NLRDP seeks to ensure efficient land data management and accessibility for all stakeholders,” Dangiwa stated.

Dangiwa stated that the government had made good progress in fixing the issues with the Federal Land Information System (FELIS) as part of efforts to centralise records of federal government land, ensuring their safety and integrity.

Group Hails Reforms in NAHCON

A group in Kwara State, Kwara Must Change (KMC), has lauded a member of the House Representatives representing Baruten-Kaiama federal constituency of Kwara State at the National Assembly, Hon. Bio Umar, for initiating a motion that led to the ongoing reforms in the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The commendation according to THISDAY checks might not be unconnected with the recent sack of the former NAHCON Chairman, Alhaji Jalal Arabi, over alleged misappropriation of funds meant for the just concluded Hajji operations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The development however led to the ongoing investigations by the two security agencies in the country, the Economic and Financial Crimes

Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The federal government has since sacked Arabi to pave for thorough investigations on his alleged involvement in the financial recklessness at the NAHCON.

In a statement issued yesterday in Ilorin by the group which was signed by its Convener, Comrade Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the group said the ongoing reform at NAHCON is a sign that the current administration of President Bola Tinubu does not condone corruption.

Hamzat recalled that, "Hon. Bio initiated a motion at the House of Representatives in July, which led the House to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate NAHCON over the conduct of the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage.

“The range of estimates, varying from 17 million to 28 million, has not

only been a source of embarrassment but also a hindrance to effective policymaking and strategic planning”, prompting the inauguration of a Joint Steering Committee on National

CDS Seeks Collective Efforts to Secure School Environment

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has called for collective measures among security agencies, community members and school managers to secure schools against security challenges.

Musa made the call on Thursday at a safe school workshop with the theme: 'Providing a Secure and Safe Learning Environment for Advancement of National Development' organised by 8 Division of Nigerian Army, Sokoto.

He said the Armed Forces of Nigeria would continue to do all within their strength to ensure the protection of children in collaboration with other security agencies.

He noted that a secured and better environment must be provided for Nigerian children to be able to acquire education without fear of criminals.

In his address, Chief of Defence Training and Operations Nigerian Army Headquarters, Maj. Gen. Emeka Onumajuru, said the workshop was in line with President

Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and federal government’s policy on safe, secure and violentfree schools initiative.

Onumajuru noted that the workshop became imperative in view of the incessant attacks on schools across Nigeria since 2014.

He said the event was prepared as a step down training with participants to educate others in their formations, educational cycles and departments in order to expand the scope of knowledge and experiences learnt.

According to him, the workshop

was aimed at sensitising troops on the rudiments of inter-agency collaboration to protect schools against attacks.

''It was an avenue to provide key enablers required to reach the locations of some of the schools, such as motorcycles and communication gadgets, so as to respond rapidly when the need arises.

''Education is the pillar of the society's development that needs to be prioritised and ensure collective strategies to safeguard learning environment for future generations,'' Onumajuru said.

Clerics Want S'East Govs to Exert More Pressure to Secure Kanu’s Freedom

Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo in Umuahia

As clamour for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, keeps growing as a group of clerics have urged the governors of the South-east zone to be more courageous in demanding for his freedom.

The clerics under the aegis of the Concerned Igbo Ministers Commission, said they were not satisfied with the

efforts of the governors to secure the release of Kanu, saying that pressure on relevant authorities should be sustained.

"It appears evidently that the South-east governors, who recently assured us of their efforts to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, have suddenly gone quiet," the group said.

In a statement signed by the duo of the Int. President/Coordinator, Rev. Tony Uzo Anthony and the General

Secretary, Apostle Tony Osuji, said that the governors should not go to sleep until Kanu is freed.

The clerics reminded the South-east Governors Forum how all Yoruba monarchs, politicians, and bishops rallied round Mr. Sunday Igboho when he was detained in Benin Republic until he was released.

They said that Igbo leaders should emulate their Yoruba counterparts and show sincere solidarity in efforts to get the federal authorities to let the

Biafra activist off the hook.

"We, therefore, appeal to our governors to please stand for their own like the governors of the South-west stood for Sunday Igboho.

"We call upon all traditional rulers, bishops and politicians to rise up at this very special occasion for the release of our brother," the clerics stated.

The ministers alluded that some South-east governors appear to be dragging their feet in the advocacy

for Kanu’s release, possibly due to their personal political interests. However, they warned that "no individual interest of the governors in the South East should exceed the interest of Ndi Igbo at large", adding that thr governors of the South-east zone were "playing chicken".

The clerics said that the governors should not entertain the fear that Kanu would make them become irrelevant when he regains his freedom, adding that such feelings amount to putting

their personal interest over the interest of Igbos in general. ccording to them, the governors should not forget that the protection of the people they govern, including Kanu "is part of the oath of office that they took". The clerics pointed out that Kanu harbours no hatred for the governors "but is focused on the general good of our people (as) a man God has given us for the general good of our people, born and unborn.

Tinubu Reiterates Commitment to Tackle Oil Theft for Economic Stability

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday reiterated his administration's commitment to tackle crude oil theft to achieve the desired economic growth and stability. The President also noted that the military and other security agencies are working tirelessly to counter the menace of crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region.

Tinubu reaffirmed this commitment during the graduation ceremony of course 32 of the National Defence College in Abuja.

Represented by Vice President, Senator

Kashim Shettima, the president said the border-local dependent forces and other security agencies would counter the menace of crude oil theft as soon as possible. Tinubu also noted that staff of the Armed forces and other security agencies are beneficiaries of the N70,000 new minimum wage. He said amid the economic challenges confronting the country, his administration has been sensitive to the citizens’ needs.

Tinubu averred that his administration has made significant strides in addressing some challenges encountered by the citizens. He specifically listed the N70,000 new minimum wage for workers as one of the steps taken to address the

economic challenges faced by the citizens.

According to him, “Our dear country faces many socio-economic challenges. As a government, we are sensitive to our people's needs. We will continue to actively intervene in matters that benefit our citizens.

“Recently, we have made significant strides in addressing some of these challenges. We have implemented a new national minimum wage, which will benefit not only civilian workers but also personnel of the Nigerian armed forces and other security agencies.”

He explained that to address the hardship experienced by Nigerians, his administration is committed to

creating an innovative business in the mining sector.

He said, “We are committed to creating an innovative business model that encourages value addition in our mining sector. We are working with international partners to develop strategies that will harness these sectors' potential for national security and development."

While commending the efforts of the military under his administration, Tinubu assured that he would ensure they were well-funded and ready for battle. He noted that under his watch, members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria have made remarkable sacrifices and

NEITI: Oil, Gas Industry Contributed

$23.0456bn to the Nigerian Economy in 2021

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said the oil and gas sector contributed $23.0456 billion to the country's economy in 2021, representing a significant portion of the national revenue.

The agency also revealed that the solid minerals sector generated N193 billion in the year under review, saying that marked a 30 per cent increase from the previous year's N143 billion.

The Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr. Ogbonnaya Orji, stated this in Lagos during the NEITI-Companies Forum Meeting, tagged, 'Beyond Validation: Strengthening NEITI Companies Engagement for the Sustainability of the EITI Process'.

He added that the 2022-2023 NEITI oil, gas, and solid minerals audit report was currently at an advanced stage and would be released next month.

"In 2021, the oil and gas sector contributed $23.0456 billion to the Nigerian economy, representing a significant portion of the national revenue.

"On the other hand, the solid minerals sector generated N193 billion in 2021, marking a 30 per cent

increase from the previous year's N143 billion, while the number of companies operating in the sector grew from 1,200 in 2020 to 1,214 in 2021, reflecting a positive trend in industry participation and compliance. However, this is still a far cry from the potentials of the sector’s contribution to the Nigerian economy," Orji stated.

He said the NEITI 2021 reports also highlighted increased disclosures across both sectors, with 94 per cent

of oil and gas companies and 87 per cent of solid minerals companies fully compliant with the transparency agency's reporting standards.

He noted that there was a significant improvement in the reconciliation of financial discrepancies, with unresolved differences reduced to less than one per cent of total revenues reported, saying that indicated an improved reconciliation of data and information that was disclosed in the reports.

NSCC Calls for Integration of Care for Older Persons' Qualification, Collaborates with NBTE, Skills Nigeria

The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) has mapped out plans towards ensuring that older persons and old persons care skills are included in the Nigerian skills qualification framework. Already, the centre has opened 40 aging desks in 40 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), thereby noting that no ministry or parastatal can handle issues of aging alone, hence the legal frameworks that

have been put in place.

Director-General of the Centre, Dr. Emem Omokaro who stated this in Abuja, during the inaugural training programme for Quality Assurance Assessors (QAA) certification in the geriatric social care skills sector in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Skills Nigeria Limited, said Nigeria deserves to have a geriatric social centre industry which is also an opportunity for the country to rule her economy.

She said care of older persons is a skill and to have the skill, one needs to be trained, and for this to happen, the training of 28 providers laid emphasis in stating that it is what the Nigerian skills qualification framework says. She said, "Issues of older persons and geriatric care should be integrated into the Nigerian skills qualification framework. Without that, there would be no way in what we are doing. Nigeria skills qualification framework defines all that we are doing."

Okoye: Manufacturing Sector Beset by Inadequate, High Cost of Credit

The Nigeria Employers Consultative Association recently elected the Chief Executive Officer of Juhel Nigeria Limited, Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye, as its president and chairman of council. Okoye shares his thoughts on the economy in this exclusive interview. Dike Onwuamaeze brings the excerpts

Congratulations on your recent election as President and Chairman of the Council of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA). How did you receive the election?

As mentioned in my acceptance speech, I am committed to advancing the course of NECA member-companies and in deed the organised private sector. With the support of our members and colleagues in the management committee, we can achieve more and reposition the private sector as the true engine of development. This reflects my excitement about being elected the President of NECA. Are there economic challenges? Yes, there are! Are the challenges surmountable? Yes, they are also surmountable! But we will work with all stakeholders to ensure that our country will continue in the path of sustained and inclusive growth.

What should members of NECA and Nigerian business community expect from your leadership?

The core mandate of the association is advocacy, specifically aimed at influencing the creation of a business-friendly environment for organised businesses. We would continue to deepen our engagement with all the tiers of government and the business community to ensure that all that are needed to be done are done and on time too. The imperative for sustained growth cannot be over-emphasised, thus, we will continue to leverage all opportunities and partnerships within and outside the country to keep the private sector sustainable and competitive.

You are coming in at the time the federal government, organised businesses and organised labour have concluded the new minimum wage. What is your view on the N70,000 minimum wage?

Even though the N70,000 new minimum wage that has been signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not align with our position of N62,000, we are however committed to implementing the new law. It is instructive to note that the government must also play its part in facilitating an environment that will enable the private sector to pay. Beyond the approved figure of N70,000, the need for rapid economic growth is very important. With the current increasing cost of doing business and cost of living, there’s a lot to be done to strengthen the Naira and the economy generally. Without addressing the fundamentals of the economy, the high cost of living will continue to neutralise the value of whatever figure is approved.

Recently, the federal government removed duties and VAT on importation of raw materials for the pharmaceutical industries and others. Are these enough or do you expect more?

First, we want to commend the federal government again for this measure, which will no doubt moderate the cost of pharmaceutical products in the country. The saying that health is wealth is true and all efforts to reduce the cost of drugs should be commended. Notwithstanding the government’s intervention in the pharmaceutical industry, the business community awaits the prompt implementation of the relieve and expects a robust stakeholder’s engagement (public and private). This will ensure that all relevant government agencies (the Nigeria Customs Service, FIRS, etc) will be on the same page in the implementation while bonafide private

sector beneficiaries are determined.

Some of the multinationals that exited from Nigeria are players in the pharmaceutical industry. What is your concern about this trend?

What is going on is called capital flight in economics, which is tragic for economic growth and employment sustenance. The trend is not a good trajectory for the country. I am not surprised that the pharmaceutical sector is most affected as the sector utilises a significant proportion of foreign raw-materials and other inputs, say 50 per cent notwithstanding the persistent shortage of forex. For years, capacity utilisation in the sector has been one of the lowest among other sectors as it averaged a sub-optimal 56.8 per cent from 2021 to 2023. Unfortunately, the recent implementation of total floating exchange rate regime was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. It is, therefore, important that government review the foreign exchange policy and implement a regime that is proven to support businesses.

What is the NECA’s reaction to President Bola Tinubu’s Economic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), especially the N650 billion short term facilities for manufacturers and others?

The President’s Economic Stabilisation Programme is targeted at food security, improved power supply, enhanced social welfare and healthcare, increased energy production etc. These are the core challenges of businesses in the economy, which I believe the programme can address. The manufacturing sector is beset by inadequate and high-cost credit supply. No doubt therefore, the N650 billion short term facilities will go a long way to support the sector, provided the final interest rate is liberal and is enjoyed by bonafide manufacturing companies. We await the full implementation to see how it goes.

How would you react to the proposed Manufacturing Stabilisation Fund to rejuvenate 250 companies with 9 to 11 interest rate long term facilities for large manufacturers and others?

As earlier pointed out, the manufacturing sector has credit challenges across all categories – MSMEs and large companies. The commercial bank’s short term lending

rate is about 30 per cent, therefore, a long-term facility with interest rate between 9.0 and 11 per cent will no doubt create investment expansion and boost manufacturing activities in the country, particularly when complemented with sound infrastructure development, including electricity, etc. However, to achieve the objective of the facility, it is important that the manufacturing sector is thoroughly consulted to identify bonafide manufacturers accompanied with proper implementation.

What is your reaction to increasing Nigeria’s ongrid electricity from 4.5 gigawatts to 6.0 gigawatts within six months as announced by the federal government?

Electricity production in Nigeria is heavily challenged across all value chains, be it generation, transmission and distribution. This accounts for the mere 4000MW daily supply, which unfortunately suffers collapse often. Ideally, if we assume that the population of Nigeria is 200 million by the rule of thumb, we should have at least 200,000MW daily supply. Meanwhile, focus has been on transmission and distribution which have repeatedly failed to evacuate total generation due to limited facility. Increasing on-grid electricity from 4.5GW (4500MW) to 6.0GW (6000MW) is desirable, which will mean that evacuation challenges would be significantly resolved through significant investment in transmission and distribution.

The federal government has communicated its intention to suspend sugar tax on non-alcoholic beverages for six months. What is your view on this?

Unfortunately, the call for government to impose additional 20 per cent tax on the final price of carbonated soft drinks is spearheaded by internationally funded Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) operating in the country. It is purely an interest-driven proposal by some unscrupulous individuals that have never invested in factory business in Nigeria.

The Non-alcoholic beverage sector is the major employer of labour and contributor to the Government’s revenue in addition to their rooted Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, NECA has commended the government for the six months’ suspension, but recommended that it should be completely jettisoned. We believe that there are other ways of addressing the issue, which would require concerted stakeholders’ consultation.

The federal government is about to have a supplementary budget. What is the implication of federal government appetite for increased spending and borrowing?

There is no doubt that the supplementary budget will lead to increased borrowing by the federal government either from overseas lenders and/or local facility. Whichever way, it will be detrimental to both foreign and domestic investments.

The country’s Debt-to-GDP-Ratio is standing at 52.9 per cent, which is above the 50 per cent World Bank/IMF benchmark for developing countries. Also debt, DebtService-to-Revenue reached 73.5 per cent in 2023 and may even be more now. These indices present serious warnings for the country.

The country is fast reaching debt-overhang and no serious investor will bring capital to a debt-ridden economy. It is, therefore, important that government should moderate the cost of governance so as to reduce borrowing,

Travellers’ Guide to Beating Exchange Rate Volatility

International travellers often face the challenge of currency exchange, especially when time is of the essence. Factors such rates, and hidden and varying exchange rate methods humble even the smartest currency buyer who most times are forced to alter their initial budget, due to losses.

However, these factors beinging economic indicators, political stability, central bank policies, and market speculation can still be harnessed favourably, depending on how parties play their game, experts reckon.

The funds available to a traveller are just as important as his travelpose. Getting a good exchange deal thus comes quite handy.

Managing Director of 171 Bureau De Change Limited, (BDC) Mr. Jamiu Amusa, noted that many travellers miss the opportunity to get good exchange rate due to ignorance.

For this, he stressed a considerable knowledge of the forex market, including Bureau de Change (BDC) platforms and local banks.

Banks’ FX Windfall Tax: Promoting Fair Share in Wealth Redistribution

The introduction of a new windfall tax on Nigerian banks has continued to generate debate. While some have argued that the policy could hurt financial institutions in the country, the truth remains that the novel idea would go a long way in helping to redistribute wealth and support the vulnerable in society.

Precisely, the policy entails a 70 percent tax or levy on the ‘windfall’ profit that accrued to commercial banks following last year’s significant devaluation of the Naira— a devaluation arising from a series of significant economic reform initiatives by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Essentially, a ‘windfall’ is a benefit companies get, not necessarily due to their hard work or investments, but because of external factors that they did not influence. Usually, a large amount of money is won or received unexpectedly. Windfalls are generally sudden and very substantial. The term is loosely derived from things “blown by the wind.

In Nigeria, the legislation was created through the Finance Act Amendment and has been extended to all profits from FX transactions of banks up to 2025. It also proposes that banks must enter into a deferred payment agreement with the Federal Inland Revenue Service and must complete the payments under the plan before 31 December 2024, otherwise, the banks would be liable to a penalty of 10 percent per year of default and interest at the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) per annum.

The windfall tax targets banks’ substantial profits from foreign exchange (FX) transactions from 2023. This policy, which aims to capture excess profits generated by banks during periods of economic growth, has been implemented in various countries around the world with notable success.

Countries like the United Kingdom and the United States have implemented windfall taxes in the past, often during times of economic crisis.

For example, in the United Kingdom (UK), in response to massive profits in the energy sector, the UK implemented an Energy Profits Levy in May 2022, targeting oil and gas companies that saw significant profit increases due to rising energy prices exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict.

Initially set at 25 percent, the tax was raised to 35 percent in January 2023 and extended until March 2029. The government had projected it would raise £5 billion in its first year, but actual revenues were only £2.6 billion.

Also, during the global financial crisis of 2008, the UK imposed a one-off windfall tax on banks to help fund public services and stabilise the economy. This measure was widely seen as a fair and effective way to redistribute wealth.

Another notable example was in Australia, where in 2008, the country also introduced a windfall tax on banks to support economic stimulus measures. The tax generated substantial revenue, which was used to fund infrastructure projects and other government priorities. These examples demonstrate that windfall taxes can be a valuable tool for governments to address economic challenges and promote public welfare.

Furthermore, South Africa also introduced laws in 2013 that allowed for the taxation of fair value adjustments on certain financial assets and liabilities held by brokers and banks. For countries that introduce special rules to tax unrealised gains, the rationale behind such

measures is that if shareholders can receive dividends based on valuation gains, or if these gains can be used as credible collateral, then the government should have a right to tax the perceived value.

This why in Nigeria, the federal government has continued to explain that the policy which is driven by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, aims to utilise the funds to fund masses-led programmes like fertilizers to farmers, and importation of food items directly to wholesalers to crash the prices of food, among other critical masses-led interventions.

Additionally, part of it would also be used to finance infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and other public welfare initiatives. It will also help drive economic revenue expansion push; potentially reduce socio-economic inequality and access to national wealth; provide governments with additional revenue for public services and social development; significantly redistribute excess profits in one area of the economy to raise funds for the greater social good of all; deliver timely sensitisation and strategic advocacy that promotes government’s policy for the greater good of all beyond rhetoric

Most significantly, the initiative shows the government’s strategic determination to deliver key peoplecentric programmes.

Indeed, it is a crucial step towards ensuring that the country’s financial institutions contribute their fair share to national development. This is because as banks have enjoyed significant profits due to favorable market conditions, this tax would generate substantial revenue that can be allocated to critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

While the windfall tax aims to address the perceived unfairness of banks’ windfall profits, it could

also generate significant revenue for the government, which would be used to fund public services and infrastructure.

The Founder/CEO at Inspire Group and a public policy analyst, Magnus Onyibe, justified the windfall tax, stating that tougher laws and policies may be required to meet the issues created by the banks’ enormous earnings.

For his part, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, AD&D Capital Management Limited, Mr. Idakolo Gabriel Gbolade, described the FX windfall tax as a policy aimed at boosting the revenue of the federal government due to the FX policy implemented to deregulate the FX market. He insisted that the policy greatly increased banks’ profit position and that the banking sector was a major beneficiary of the policy.

He pointed out that by international best practices, increased revenue/profit due to favourable government policies can be subject to taxation.

“The windfall tax will assist the federal government in shoring up its revenue profile and redirecting needed attention to infrastructural development, education, healthcare, and other related activities to boost the economy. The banking sector has profited from the unexpected windfall and is reluctant to tax their tremendous profits,” he said.

While admitting that the policy came at a period when the banks are preparing for recapitalisation and that increased profits would have helped them to easily navigate the recapitalisation hurdle, he nevertheless said that the windfall tax remains a legitimate demand by the government and that the banking sector as a responsible corporate citizen needs to contribute its quota to assist the country to overcome the various economic challenges affecting the nation.

Therefore, it is expected that the implementation of a windfall tax in Nigeria could yield several benefits, including generating significant revenue for the government, which can be used to fund essential public services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development as well as redistribute wealth to the poor and vulnerable sectors such as farmers.

Indeed, by capturing excess profits from banks, the windfall tax can help to reduce income inequality and promote a more equitable distribution of wealth. The tax can contribute to economic stability by discouraging excessive risk-taking by banks and mitigating the potential for future financial crises. The imposition of a windfall tax can help to restore public trust in the financial sector, particularly in the wake of economic challenges.

This is one policy where the government requires massive support from Nigerians, especially the masses as it would help in ensuring income redistribution, lower poverty and reduce inequality, if done properly. It would also go a long way to reduce social tensions arising from inequality and hardship experienced by the vulnerable due to income gaps and ensure that more resources are committed to the poor in society.

From the foregoing, while there may be concerns about the potential impact of the windfall tax on bank profitability and lending activity, it is important to note that the gove rnment can carefully calibrate the tax rate and structure to minimise negative consequences. By striking a balance between revenue generation and economic stability, Nigeria can leverage the windfall tax to achieve its development goals and tackle the hunger and hardship in the land.

Pharmacists Plan Legal Action to Enforce National Social Health Insurance Act 2022

Worried by the prevalence of inappropriate dispensing of drugs in the Social Health Insurance Scheme in the country, pharmacists under the aegis of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) are considering legal action to enforce the implementation of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act as amended and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) Act 2022.

The decision was one of the high points of the communiqué of the 43rd Annual National Conference of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) held in Ibadan, Oyo State recently. The NHIA Act 2022 ensures that every Nigerian can access affordable and quality healthcare services including regulating, promoting, managing and integrating all health insurance schemes and practices in Nigeria.

ACPN, which expressed concern at the violation of the NHIA Act as amended and the PCN Act 2022 as it relates to the appropriate dispensing of drugs in social health insurance endeavours in Nigeria, claimed that over N1 trillion worth of drugs had been dispensed in the country since 2006 by persons who have not aligned with the necessary provisions of law. Consequently, it advised the National Executive Committee of the association to explore

necessary legal action to compel the implementation of the provisions of the law establishing the NHIA.

‘’Conference reviewed recent developments at NHIA and called on the Chairman and NEC to immediately explore necessary legal action to compel the implementation of the NHIA Act as amended and the PCN Act 2022 as it relates to the appropriate dispensing of drugs in social health insurance endeavours in Nigeria bearing in mind that over N1 trillion worth of drugs have been dispensed since 2006 by persons who have not aligned with the necessary provisions of law.’’

It commended the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) for resuscitating the National Prescription Policy (NPP) which was brought to the front burners in 2013 by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) leadership.

The ACPN also “appreciated the trajectory of the NPP committee but stressed the need to appoint a Pharmaceutical Consultant who must be a Registered Pharmacist within the purview of the PCN Act and a Medical Consultant who must be a Registered Medical Doctor within the ambit of the MDCN Act.’’

It noted that there was a need for policy shifts in the pharmaceutical sector to boost innovations and collaborations in Community Pharmacy (CP) practice in the country for effective service delivery.

The body also sought more commitment by the federal government in efforts to overcome the many challenges inhibiting the harnessing of the potentials in the

pharma-sector value chains, including lack of coordination of the sector and incidents of quacks and prevalent fake and counterfeit drugs.

“Conference declared that government must show more commitment to unlocking the Pharma-sector value chain by overcoming a plethora of challenges including fragmented coordination of the sector, checkmating the high incidence of unqualified and untrained hands which dabble into the professional terrain, prevalence of fake and counterfeit medicines because of a glaring inadequacy in the implementation mode of the National Drug Distribution Guidelines (NDDG), dearth of inculcation of technology, poor access to capital and infrastructures which are below par.

“ACPN also called for effective regulatory controls in the quest for Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) and appealed for legislative action in key areas like the establishment of the Federal and State Task Forces on fake and counterfeit drugs, which it identified as the ‘’inherent weaknesses in the Pharmacy and Drug statutes that encourages criminal elements and merchants of death to get away with impunity in the pharma sector.’’

The body of Community Pharmacists advocated for “proper funding of National Agency for Drug Administration and Control(NAFDAC) and Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) to enable these agencies meet the expectations of consumers of health, while also encouraging these agencies to abrogate some of the tariffs which have become burdensome on pharmaceutical manufacturers as well as importers;

Tech4Dev, UK-Nigeria Tech Hub Chart Blueprint to Grow Creative Economy

The Technology for Social Change and Development Initiative (Tech4Dev), in partnership with the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), and the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture have concluded a two-day value chain mapping exercise to address challenges in the state’s creative sector.

Lagos, hailed as Africa’s creative capital, boasts a rich tapestry of creative expression, from the pulsating beats of its music scene to the dynamic storytelling of Nollywood.

However, beneath the surface of this vibrant ecosystem lies a critical need for strategic government backing to bolster the sector’s investment attractiveness.

According to a statement, this was the central theme of a recent gathering where key stakeholders advocated for comprehensive policies to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s creative economy.

The event brought together over 70 stakeholders, including private sector players, value chain actors and government officials, with a particular focus on the need for government’s increased efforts in promoting the ease of doing business through better infrastructure, talent develop-

ment, and clear policy direction.

“Nigeria’s creative ecosystem is a convergence of diverse industries and value chains, including the thriving Nollywood film industry, music, publishing, fashion, hospitality, tourism, and other digitally enabled sub-sectors.

“Despite the estimated 4.2 million jobs created across media, entertainment, beauty and lifestyle, visual arts, tourism, and hospitality, the Nigerian creative industry has yet to realise its full potential. Experts suggest that the sector could contribute up to $100 billion annually and generate an additional 2.7 million jobs by 2030— statistics that are expected to grow at five per cent annually.

“The active involvement of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture in the value chain mapping exercise serves as an indication of the government’s commitment to cultivating a thriving creative sector,” the statement added.

Country Director of the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, Oyinkan Akintola-Bello, stressed the need for synergy between the government and private sector to grow the creative economy in Nigeria.

“It was refreshing to hear about some of the government’s

intervention in the creative ecosystem. I envision a collaborative approach where the government and private sector work together to cultivate Nigeria’s creative economy. A crucial next step is gathering comprehensive data, particularly for the creative economy map, to empower informed decision-making on investments, skill development, and even identifying historical filming locations.”

Country Manager at Tech4Dev, Micheal John added, “The Lagos State Creative Sector mapping was a game-changer for us. We finally understand the creative sector in detail and have a clear picture of the government’s vision and direction. Now, it’s time to mainstream findings into policy frameworks, create an illustrative map of the creative economy, and focus on soft infrastructure to support creativity.”

Also, Senior Research and Policy Manager, Immanuel Umukoro said, “The absence of a clear policy framework is a significant barrier to attracting investment into the creative sector. We need synergy across MDAs and a policy that speaks to the creative sector in general. By creating an illustrative map and focusing on soft infrastructure, we can encourage investors to come into the creative space.”

With guests seated and treated to delicious cuisines and assorted drinks, the MC, Okey Bakasi announced the entrance of the bridal train. Shortly, Chidimma and Obinna were ushered into the reception hall which was lavishly decorated. The cozy ambiance was lit up intermittently with soulful music serenading the whole place.

Chairman of the occasion, Onyema in his welcome address, implored the newly wedded couple to be each other’s best friend, noting that it’s only friendship that can keep their marriage.

“I want you to be your wife’s best friend. It’s not going to be easy for the rest of your life, you need friendship to keep your marriage. Be each other’s best friend,” Onyema said.

The MC called out the parents of the bride and groom to the dance floor.

As Senator Umeh danced with his daughter, Chidimma to the admiration of guests, the comedian chipped in: “Senator Umeh you are dancing too long with your daughter, the husband is becoming jealous, please release her to hubby. She is now his property.”

This light joke sparked off laughter all over the hall and brought the dance to a stop.

The hall became electrified when Obinna and Chidimma hit the dance floor. They entertained guests with their unique dance steps from the live performance of one of Nigeria’s music icons, Kcee.

Some guests were invited to the beautifully decorated podium to take photographs with Chidimma and Obinna.

For Chidimma and Obinna, it was a day to be cherished and remembered for the rest of their lives.

Ademola Lookman

Torn Between English Giants and PSG

When it looked almost certain that Super Eagles star,Ademola Lookman would be plying his trade in Ligue 1,with Paris Saint-Germain as his probable destination,Premier League giants-Arsenal and Liverpool have now joined the fray for the signature of theAtalanta forward and the former Leicester City player is at crossroads concerning his future destination

According to top transfer expert, Nicolo Schira, Atalanta BC striker, Ademola Lookman, has agreed on personal terms like salary and contract duration with PSG.

The 26-year-old Super Eagles player was reported to have agreed to a five-year contract worth five million Euros per season, about thrice what he earns at Atalanta.

The Nigeria international striker scored 32 goals and 18 assists in 79 competitive games for the Serie A club.

Lookman became a cult hero with fans of the Serie A side, after his exploits in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen last season, where he scored a hat-trick as Atalanta won 3-0.

The club-to-club negotiations may not be seamless as Atalanta wishes to keep hold of the Nigerian player.

Meanwhile, Lookman is set for a big and bitter fight with his Italian club Atalanta over a transfer possibly to PSG after he pulled out of his team’s opening Serie A match at Lecce because he wished to make a transfer.

Atalanta coach Gian Piero admitted the player’s decision to quit was “unexpected”.

Atalanta Sports Director, Luca Parcassi has now gone further to say that Lookman has been “wrongly advised” and it will be the club and not the player who will decide on any transfer.

He stressed that the interest of Atalanta will be the priority.

“We are very calm because our idea, which is shared by the coach, the club and the owners, was for the first time in our history not to let important players leave,” he told SkySports

“All players belong to Atalanta and the club will decide what will be done based on what is best for the team.

“Unfortunately, these guys are too often given bad advice. The fact that the transfer window is open when the season starts makes it feel endless.”

Lookman, 26, joined the Italian club in August 2022.

His contract runs out in June 2026 with the club also having the option to extend by an additional year and his Transfermarkt valuation is 40 million Euros.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly ready to pounce on PSG’s hesitation and land Lookman in a huge £42.5m swap deal.

Lookman is in demand following his scintillating performance in the final of the Europa League, where he scored a stunning hat-trick to inflict German champions Bayer Leverkusen’s only competitive defeat of the season. The 26-year-old winger has been linked with PSG this summer while a switch to the Saudi Pro League has also been mooted.

Lookman played in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid last week but with speculation over his future mounting, he

was missing from Atalanta’s squad for their season opener against Lecce on Monday. That was said to be because his agent had received an approach from PSG.

It has also been claimed that Lookman has been absent from training, suggesting his days in Italy are coming to an end.

However, with a move to the French capital still to be inked and in danger of falling through, the Gunners are ready to sweep in and bring the former Charlton and Fulham ace back to London, according to reports in Italy.

Arsenal are said to be ready to offer €50m (around £42.5million), with defender Jakub Kiwior potentially heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal, reports Sportitalia. Alternatively, Lookman could head to the Emirates on loan with an option to buy.

Kiwior’s part in any deal could lower the fee. Whether it is to Atalanta or not, the Pole, who was not part of Mikel Arteta’s squad for the season-opening victory over Wolves, is expected to leave north London in the near future.

Lookman’s performance against Leverkusen in Dublin was the standout moment of a nomadic career which has also taken in spells at Everton, RB Leipzig and Leicester City. The Nigerian is happy to finally be delivering on his undoubted potential after bagging 17 goals and registering 10 assists last term.

“The past few years I’ve been able to take my game to a new level on a more consistent basis. Maybe it would have come

earlier,” he said after the Europa League final.

Lookman again stayed away from Atalanta training as interest for the forward from Arsenal intensified.

Another Premier League club, Liverpool, have also asked about the transfer situation of the player and it has been reported that Atalanta want between 65-70 Million Euros for Lookman.

Meanwhile, former Italy and Napoli striker, Michele Padovano, has referred to Lookman, as disrespectful for how he’s handled the interest PSG showed in him.

Following PSG’s interest, Lookman, like his teammate, Koopmeiners, asked to be excluded from Atalanta’s matches till their future is sorted.

The decision did not go down well with Padovano, who felt the players’ decision was an act of disrespect to the club. The 57-yearold took to his Instagram page to publicly call Lookman out for how he handled the transfer saga.

“Lookman should have respect for Atalanta because, in previous years, he has not really exploded. Atalanta gave him the opportunity to become an important player, and this attitude does not give him credit,” the ex-Crystal Palace man wrote on his page.

Paris Saint-Germain have offered Lookman a massive salary increase. Le Parisien proposed terms to the 27-year-old will see his salary go from €1.8 million to €4.5 million a year.

Dr. Osarieme Bazuaye coming into sports was not by accident, as a primary school pupil at St. Michael Anglican Primary School, Kaduna, he watched his father, Pa Benjamin Omorogbe Bazuaye, play cricket against the Europeans. Little wonder the graduate of veterinary medicine at the Ahmadu Bello, University, Zaria, at one stage in his life was an ardent cricketer and also sponsored cricket competitions.

“My late dad was a cricketer, when I was in primary school, I use to watch him with the Europeans playing cricket, so in my second year at Edo College I had made the school’s junior cricket team and a year later I was already in the proper school team.”

Bazuaye was also a a notable member of the school football team.

In pursuit of higher education, he moved to CMS Grammar school Bariga, Lagos for his Higher School Certificate, HSC.

During his stay in CMS Grammar School, he was decorated with school football honors for distinguished services to the school.

“I was appointed as prefect for school and Livingstone House respectively. In addition to these responsibilities, I captained

the school football team in 1966 and was awarded the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in the same year.

Some years later after leaving school, both of us were inducted into the HALL of FAME in recognition for our outstanding achievements in Lagos school football “Principal’s Cup”.

Bazuaye played for Lagos Academicals in 1965 and 66 and won the Manua Cup in 66, after being a member of the pioneer football team of mid-west in 1964 for the same competition.

After graduating from CMS Grammar School, he joined Electric City of Nigeria, (ECN) and played with the likes of late Paul Hamilton, Sebastain Broderick, Inuwa Lawal aka Rigogo and Amusa Shittu amongst many others.

In spite of his exploits in football as a secondary school boy, Bazuaye never took it to the zenith and there was only one reason for this- his dad’s constant beating.

“My father was beating hell out of me; he would say ‘your mates are reading and you are busy playing football.’ Moreover, football was not seen as a career then, footballers were seen then as the never-do-wells. Then, we were looking forward to becoming doctors, lawyers, engineers and the likes. Football was not what it is today. If football was what it is today, I would probably not have gone to the university.

“Imagine a boy of 22 years earning over two hundred pounds per week playing football. He can conveniently afford to employ a teacher to develop himself,” he said.

In 1968, Bazuaye got admission to read Veterinary Medicine at the Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria.

“While I was at Amadu Bello University I was a senior member of the football XI, for the four years I played for the school football team no Nigerian university defeated us. We won the NUGA Games twice under the tutelage of the legendary Teslim Balogun. It was at that point I got nicknamed Shege Bazu! For my defensive prowess.

“We also played twice in the final of the West Africa University Games (WAUG) but lost to University of Ghana on both occasions,” he narrated.

For Bazuaye, making the best 11 of football event of the WAUG Games was the peak of his footballing career.

Though before now, the Vetenary Doctor has been giving back to sports, but as he turns 80-years today, he plans to set up a proper sports foundation at Edo College Benin.

“Because of my 80th birthday, I decided to start a foundation. I realise government funds is becoming leaner and leaner. Sports and education these days can go together. Sport is a lucrative business if well managed. You can see how young men are earning millions of dollars in football now.

“When I was at Edo college, we are just 25 in a class and there were good people managing the affairs and resources the government was providing. The school provides all the sporting facilities including the note books. But now the reverse is the case, in the last inter house sport the school held, I had to send down the water for my own school house, which is one of the reasons I am really getting towards a sustained sports development and donating sports equipment in Edo College. If you don’t have equipment in school there is no way you can discover and develop potential athletes, and that’s the essence of my foundation. This legacy I’m going to leave in Edo College if it’s well managed would outlive me and that is the whole essence of my foundation,” he expressed.

Asked what he has put in place for the foundation to live beyond him, he said:

“There is a committee of old boys’ association and the money would be managed by the committee for credibility purpose and they will be in charge of maintaining the sports facilities, providing football boots, cricket bats etc.

“If there are no sporting facilities, how can you bring out the budding talents? Unlike in my time in which you have to compulsorily participate in every sport and if you excel in a particular one you will now specialise in it. During my secondary school days, a form four student represented Nigeria in the sprint. Every student must have a knowledge of all the sports.”

Nigeria’s disastrous performance at the recently concluded Olympic Games and the moribund state of the country’s sports would not indeed miss Bazuaye’s candid opinion.

For the octogenarian, going back to

regional government is the only way Nigeria can revive her sports that is going moribund.

“In our time you know the fastest child in primary and secondary schools within the district, vis a vis in football and other sports. But all these things have collapsed. If there is no basics anything you invest will not stand. Those days we use to have the academicals every year, which was a good way of developing sports, then there were lots of crisscrossing in sporting activities amongst schools which also brings about unity in the country.

“Sports is a very lucrative business if well managed. After oil and telecommunication, sport comes next because it has a ripple effect,” he noted.

He would however prefer government involvement in sports to be limited to proving infrastructure and enabling environment.

On what sports has given him in life, the CMS Grammar School HSC graduate says emphatically: “Sports has given me friendship both in Nigeria and outside of the country, it’s a good form of network and it helped health wise.”

Though he came into golf late in his life but stated that he always knew while he was younger that he would end up playing golf. Saying that golf not only helps a person mentally but also helps in overcome obstacle of life.

“Golf is life he said.”

As part of Bazuaye’s 80thbirthday ceremony, the Ikeja Golf Club will today be playing a tournament in his name of which some of the proceeds from the tourney will go into his foundation.

CAF Champions League: Rangers

Survive Zilimadjou Scare in Uyo

Reigning champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League, Enugu Rangers narrowly advanced to the second round of the CAF Champions League after a tense 1-1 draw against US Zilimadjou of Comoros at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The Flying Antelopes secured a 2-1 aggregate victory, but the journey was far from straightforward.

Coming into the match with a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg, Rangers were expected to

dominate on home soil.

However, Zilimadjou proved to be a much tougher opponent than anticipated, frustrating the Nigerian side throughout the game. Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Rangers struggled to break down the resilient Comorian defence.

The breakthrough for the home side finally came in the 79th minute when Kenechukwu Agu coolly converted a penalty,

giving Rangers a crucial lead.

This goal appeared to seal the tie, as Rangers were set to coast into the next round. But Zilimadjou had other plans.

In a dramatic twist, the visitors equalised just five minutes from time, setting up a tense finale that left the home fans on edge.

With the aggregate scoreline at 2-1 in favor of Rangers, Zilimadjou pushed hard for a second goal that would have forced extra time.

Revenge in Mind as Arsenal Storm Villa Park

Barring Arsenal two losses to AstonVilla last season, the Gunners would have been referred to as Premier League’s defending champions and not Manchester City. Therefore, revenge will be on Mikel Arteta’s and his men’s minds when they travel to AstonVilla this evening. Unai Emery did the double over his old team last season, firstly edging a narrow win atVilla Park before two late goals at the Emirates in the final weeks of the campaign took away the title initiative from Arsenal as they lost out to the Citizens by a margin of two points

Arsenal managers past and present collide in the West Midlands this evening, when the Gunners make the trip to tackle Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Both sides have three points on the board after one outing, as the Lions edged out West Ham United 2-1 on the opening weekend, while Mikel Arteta’s team put two unanswered goals past Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Had Jhon Duran got his way earlier in the transfer window, the Colombian striker would be donning a different shade of claret than the one he currently sports, having teased a move to West Ham on social media before a deal ultimately fell through.

sword without the need for the South American’s late intervention, but the Lions are now on the cusp of opening a Premier League season with back-to-back wins for just the fourth time.

Formerly prevailing in an astonishing 15 Premier League games in a row at their home ground in 2023, Emery’s side have since lost their consistency on their own patch in terms of victories, but not goals, having scored at least twice in their last eight matches at Villa Park.

Speaking of teams scoring multiple times in front of their own fans, Arsenal’s inaugural game of 2024-25 saw them host a Wolves side whom they had scored against in 33 successive matches, a streak that became 34 when Kai Havertz nodded in Bukayo Saka’s delivery.

Mohammed against Emmanuel Christian in the middleweight division, and Xavier Adams Boa battling Dennis Johnson. Expressing his excitement for the event, UFC legend and AKO co-owner Kamaru

“The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman, said, “This event is another significant milestone for African MMA, and I am confident that the fighters will deliver an unforgettable show for the fans. AKO5 is going to be a night to remember. The energy, the fans, and the fights will be electric.”

IBB Captain’s Inaugural Golf Tees Off

The newly elected executives of IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja has rolled out plans for their tenure with the Captain’s Inaugural Golf Tournament, scheduled from yesterday through tomorrow.

A statement by the Social and Welfare Officer, Dr Lanre Phillips, said over 200 members of the club will usher in the new executive committee led by Captain Ibrahim Babayo, in line with the club’s tradition.

Philips noted that the newly elected Exco members had already started their various programmes, with focus being the maintenance of the course and zero tolerance for waste.

“We are hosting the captains’ inaugural tournament, which is to usher in the new Exco that was elected in April this year. It is a tradition that we do every year. After the inauguration of EXCO, a tournament is held to showcase the golfing prowess of our members,’’ he said. Also, the Lady Captain,

Dame Julie Donli, assured that this year’s inaugural would be unique.

“Captain’s inaugural is usually organised by the Captain of the club.

“This inaugural is used to usher in the one-year tenure of the captain and to unfold the yearly plans, we are able to tell everyone what we have in stock for them.

“We are able to meet all the membersandgolfwiththem.Basically , that is what the captain’s inaugural is all about,” she said.

Odele Age Group Tennis Tourney Ends Today

The second edition of Gbolahan Odele age group tennis tournament which started on Monday August 19 ends today in Lagos.

The organisers were stunned as there were late entries which exceeded their expectations as more registered late to make the event a far bigger than the first edition held in GRA, Ikeja Badejo Sports headed by Coach Dele Badejo are in

charge of the organization of the tourney taking place at the Adejumo Tennis Spot Complex in Egbeda Lagos.

Coach Badejo said coping with the late rush of entries was a huge task for the organizing team of the catch them young event.

“We had to delay the draw to accommodate more kids for the various cadres of the event. We are just happy that the response and the standard exhibited have

been wonderful.

“So far the tournament has been very exciting and I can proudly say that there are future national champions in this edition based of the talents we have seen here,” Badejo said.

The tournament is being staged for Boys and Girls between the ages of 12 and 16. That is the U-12, U-14 and U-16 young tennis players in in the male and female cadres.

Duran watched on for an hour at the London Stadium last weekend as a Lucas Paqueta penalty cancelled out Amadou Onana’s opening goal, and after Emery’s men wasted a few opportunities to restore their advantage, Duran appropriately hammered the nail into the Hammers’ coffin 11 minutes from time.

The fledgling forward celebrated his winner by pointing at the London Stadium turf in front of the Villa fans - a gesture that likely signalled his intent to stay with Emery’s side rather than remain at West Ham’s ground - as he snapped the Lions’ four-match winless sequence in the Premier League.

Based on the volume of chances they created, Villa should have put Julen Lopetegui’s men to the

La

Liga:

Mbappe Set for Bernabeu

Debut Live on StarTimes

Football fans in Nigeria and beyond can catch Kylian Mbappe’s highly anticipated first official game at the Santiago Bernabeu for Real Madrid on StarTimes this weekend.

The French star, who recently made a sensational move from PSG, will look to mark his home debut with a goal and a victory against Real Valladolid tomorrow.

Although Mbappe has already played in two official games for Real Madrid, including the UEFA Super Cup and a La Liga away match against Real Mallorca, he is yet to experience the electric Bernabeu atmosphere as a home player. Last weekend, Mbappe failed to score as Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Mallorca, but he will be eager to make a lasting impression on his home debut.

Real Madrid will aim to return to winning ways in La Liga when they host Real Valladolid at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow.

The hosts have a dominant record against Valladolid, having won their last five encounters without conceding a goal.

Despite their recent struggles, Real Madrid’s

historical dominance and home advantage give them a strong chance of securing a victory. Meanwhile, Barcelona will look to extend their impressive home record against Athletic Club when the two sides meet at the Camp Nou today.

The Blaugrana have not lost a home match against Athletic since November 2001 and have scored in each of their last 39 encounters at the Camp Nou against the Basque side. However, Athletic Club has enjoyed a recent resurgence and will be looking to upset the hosts. The visitors have won just one of their last 21 meetings with Barcelona in La Liga, but their recent form and the presence of former Barcelona player Inaki Williams could pose a threat to the Blaugrana’s defence.

Other exciting encounters include Atletico Madrid hosting Girona and Real Betis facing Alaves, while Leganes meets Las Palmas. All matches will be broadcast live on StarTimes Sports Premium channel, with the platform offering every La Liga match for just N600 weekly on the StarTimes-ON app.

Onyeka: Fire in Her Belly

Two Saturdays ago, we had two journalists-guests on our weekend radio talkshow to reminisce about the shocking and remarkable passage of Nigerian singer, composer, and of many other parts, Onyeka Onwenu. Both journalists (Charles Okogene and Azuh Arinze) have spent decades covering the Nigerian entertainment space, and have had close professional contact with the “Elegant Stallion” (as the Nigerian media fondly calls her). One question prompted this article: “Onyeka - from experience - was not an easy person to deal with; how did you manage your relationship with her, and were there any regrets?”

Each person answered as best as he could spare, while unconsciously skirting the African philosophy of “don’t speak ill of the dead”, supposedly. That scenario prompted this article. An aspect of Onyeka Onwenu that only some of her compatriots and associates knew and dread (or loved) depending on the circumstance.

This particular circumstance was provided by a visit to our defunct television show, FAJ-Alive (a live issue-oriented weekly talkshow on Lagos Television). On the last day of April 2017, the songstress and politician graced our show, and delivered an hour long denunciations of the activities and actions of a rival musical copyright collecting society, and its main operative (her longtime colleague and countryman) amidst other topics of interest. She spoke like one with fire in her belly.

Apparently miffed by some of Onyeka’s statements, few days after the televised diatribe, a warning letter was fired in her direction by lawyers to the then and current Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Chief Tony Okoroji - the anvil head which Onyeka used in knocking some of her arguments into shape. Here is the letter, unedited:

“Dear Ms Onwenu, Re: Your Recent Defamatory Statements

Against Chief Tony Okoroji

We are solicitors to Chief Tony Okoroji (hereinafter referred to as ‘our client’) and on whose instructions we write to you.

It has come to the attention of our Client that despite two judgements against you for defamatory statements against our Client, which you are yet to comply with, and for which you may be liable to be committed to prison, you have resumed to attack the person of our Client with false statements and innuendos.

We have the instructions of our Client to inform you in very strong terms that our Client will never be tired of bringing suit after suit against you for as long as (you) stay on your maliciously chosen path.

In the event that you publish or make one more defamatory statement against our Client, we shall perfect our Client’s instructions by once more instituting legal action against you. We hope that good reason will prevail.

A word is indeed enough for the wise.

Yours faithfully,

Pp: CREATIVE LEGAL, Seun Omotoba & Co.

Justin Ige Managing Partner”.

Of course, and just as swiftly, Onyeka - in her personal capacity - returned “fire for fire” with a fairly long riposte. Here again, unedited:

“Subject: Re: Your Recent Defamatory Statements Against Chief Tony OkorojiWithout Prejudice.

Your letter on the above matter refers. Permit me to state the obvious.

Your Client’s harassment of Onyeka Onwenu has now become an obsession. Let it be known that I cannot be cowered and will not submit to threats.

If the objective is to shut me up and prevent me from expressing myself, you will continue to fail.

Self expression is a basic human right. It is also my responsibility to comment on matters that concern the Entertainment Industry which I helped build up and which I am fully engaged in. I am not afraid of your

“But what is not known is what happen (happens) to such impostors at the end of the day.”

“Asides (sic) from the dearth of medical doctors in the health sector has put immense pressure on those on ground.” Existential humanism: just begin the sentence from (or overhaul the entire wrong-headed entry):The dearth or aside, the dearth

“Amidst this (Amid these) most Nigerians have opted to patronize private clinics despite its (their) obvious shortcomings.”

“…considering the capacity crowd the adoration ground attracts on weekly (a weekly) basis….”

law suits. You should know that by now. This is the second threatening letter you have addressed to me, on the instruction of your Client, Mr Tony Okoroji.

May I add that you and both of you are beginning to look ridiculous with these threats of law suits, every time I speak on issues concerning COSON. It would appear to a discerning mind that you probably have nothing better to do.

Mr Ige, why is your Client so afraid of Onyeka Onwenu that he is prepared to go to any length to shut her up. Does it have anything to do with the fact that she speaks the truth?

You are a COSON lawyer, paid with money I earn as a Musician. Do you not see something morally wrong with your being involved in these harassment and Legal rascality of taking me to Court anytime I exercise my right to express myself, even in the process of answering a reporter’s question? However, it is acceptable for your Client to put out Press releases and make public statements about his cases against me.

Who does Tony Okoroji think he is and what gives him the right to stop me from commenting on an issue that concerns me.

Tony Okoroji’s obsession with Onyeka Onwenu took a dan gerous turn when he accused me of planning to send hired assassins after him, at a COSON Board meeting in 2012, in the presence of other Board Members. I responded by pointing out that he may be trying to deflect suspicions by making the accusation first, of something he was planning to do himself.

Not long afterwards, there were four attempts made to harm me by unknown persons who followed me home. This matter was fully investigated by the Police who questioned Tony Okoroji about his “hired assassins” accusation at the board meeting. Your Client shamelessly denied ever making such an accusation.

On that day, any respect I still had for Tony Okoroji, quickly evaporated.

Please tell your Client that enough is enough at this stage. He should leave me alone and face his business of being a life long Chairman of the COSON Board. If he thinks that the public, indeed the Nigerian people, are not aware of his unrelenting jealousy of Onyeka Onwenu, he should think again.

At a recent Public Event, your Client mentioned my name three times in a two minute speech where he donated One Hundred Thousand naira, informing the audience that Onyeka Onwenu would probably write a Petition against him for making the donation. I have never written a Petition against Tony Okoroji. Perhaps I should sue him for those statements. Please tell your Client to leave me alone.

You may sue me for even breathing but what I know and Mr Okoroji should know too, is that I am a child of God. I have my plate full with positive things to do. Okoroji is not important enough to divert my attention and focus from the really important things in life. I have no room in my heart or mind for hateful scheming.

I wish both you and your Client well but I will not hesitate to defend myself or speak my mind on issues of mutual concern, particularly when asked to comment or feel the need to. You simply cannot shut me up. All that Tony Okoroji needs to do is conduct himself well and above board on COSON matters, as long as he is Chairman of Board and I am a member of that CMO.

Thank you for your kind attention. God bless.

Onyeka Onwenu (MFR)”

That was seven years ago - surely, time has somewhat settled the matter.

The North and Its Enemies

The real enemy of that section of the Nigerian polity that is generally referred to as “The North” is not Tinubu. It is not banditry, or insurgency. It is also not political marginalization or the Governor of the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN), who directed that some departments of the CBN be relocated, as alleged by Katsina elders some time ago. It is, instead, the failure of the Northern political, feudal, business and religious elites to address issues that are central to the region’s future in a 21st century world. It is as if there is a resolve by those who should know better to maintain deliberate insensitivity to the blinding gale of misfortunes sweeping through the region and burying everything that holds the prospect of a rebirth for the region.

Rather than focus on what really matters, the concern is about more political opportunities for those who are holding the region in an anti-development stranglehold at the moment. We hear some of them speak of how much of a menace “the North” will be in 2027 if President Tinubu does this, or fails to do that, in the interests of the region. And all of this chatter, presumably in in pursuit of the overall higher interests of the north, is going on in the comfortable abodes of a disconnected political elite. While they are at it, that is arguing for the “genuine” interests of the north, the place is being routinely decimated on a daily basis. It is steadily spewing out an ever-growing population of destitutes and budding criminals who are driven to social deviance by plain, naked hunger and nothing more.

We are speaking here of hunger and the search for food to eat, as distinct from the desire to use crime and criminality as a means of wealth creation. The cartel of criminals involved in the serious business of kidnapping for ransom, which is actually an elite investment platform that uses daredevil foot soldiers for its operations, make up less than one percent of the criminal population.

And it is apparent from the pronouncements and reflexes of the elite that no new lessons are being learnt. That is why today, all the issues raised and dramatized on this page on September 14, 2020, in a piece titled “Northern Nigeria: The Pretence Persists”, are still so alive and so painfully fresh. They are so relevant and roundly timely that the article can bear substantial reproduction here today. Here goes:

“A recent lengthy submission from the elder statesman, Ahmed Joda, rested on a telling conclusion: Northern Nigeria is not developing its human capital. It also does not have the time to do so anymore. Therefore, it is now ill-equipped to fit into either the knowledge-driven world of today or the new world of tomorrow. It needs at least 20 years to become significant in any way. But rather than wake up to this benumbing fact, there is the pursuit of the illusion of dominance.

The major point in Joda’s intervention is that the triumphalism of cattle rearers whose illusion of invulnerability is fuelled and sustained by

a national security framework that is skewed to promote insecurity in specific regions of the country will go burst sooner than later. Since most of the northern states have many abandoned, ungoverned and even ungovernable spaces, its currently consumption-driven elite is really in no position to do anything, beyond maintaining a hollow swagger that is backed by nothing but the fact that they are living mostly in Abuja and floating on free state funds.

The above was penned four years ago. In the above-referenced article, I also took us back to and earlier intervention, also on this page, of April 17, 2019, “As the North Goes Under.” In this piece I spoke of a visit to Zamfara State in 2014. I pointed out that “The then Secretary to the State Government explained how he abandoned his farm and ranch because of cattle rustling and fear for his personal safety. I spoke of how he confessed that it was impossible to deploy law enforcement agents, even for himself, in any meaningful way because they were mostly outnumbered, ill equipped and answerable to Abuja”.

Even back then in 2019, five years after our visit to Zamfara state, I asked in the aforementioned article: “Have matters improved in Zamfara State today, or gotten worse? Just as the then Zamfara State governor complained that “the misfortunes” of his people centred around “derivation, as a lot of gold was mined in the state and carted away while his people were ravaged by poverty,” many other states are not faring any better. And Northern states with over 30% of their geographical space occupied by marauders have been drafting and implementing budgets and development projects covering these areas, where no one lives.

Elite myopia, leadership illiteracy and abysmal ignorance of both 21st Century leadership and cultural anthropology of the Nigerian state are working together here. Most of Nigeria’s poor are northerners, even when most high profile political and economically rewarding positions are held by Northerners. Yet, this

very same north is being systematically wiped out. Unlike what happened during the mass massacre of Igbos in the 60s, no religion, ethnic, or political affiliation exonerates anyone today. For once, the North is actually giving the greatest evidence ever in its history of both political illiteracy and failure to follow the rules of self-preservation.

Are leaders of the North, and our leaders of various regions today generally, doing any form of costs/benefits analysis in their expenditures and use of public funds? I think not. No matter how generous you would like to be in evaluating the situation of the North today, you must come away with the painful conclusion that all might not be well with the people for a long time to come.

There is hardly any recent event (and I am talking about the last 15 years) in the home, or village, of most Northern politicians where the guests are not usually overwhelmed by at least 100 shabby looking youths, who are either prowling the vicinity, directly affronting guests, or raiding laid out tables. They are looking for nothing other than scraps of edibles and, not even a full meal. And the big men themselves are usually not embarrassed by the spectacle.

Has school enrolment or academic performance improved in the North, in the last ten years, even as all the governors are announcing massive “investments” in education? Has the region shown any real increase in the number of people registering for SSCE, NECO and similar competitive examinations? If no, then an inevitable implosion will yet come. As “their people” come from Chad and Niger, their own youths are begging in the streets; or are in the forests. Everywhere is turning into a no-man’s-land, where even revered traditional rulers and religious leaders are no longer safe. A backlash will come when the Sudanese, Chadians and North Africans will suddenly not be so welcome; especially after the Northerners discover that they are displaced in their very homes.

When foreigners are the ones with Nigerian ID cards in the North, when foreigners are

voters in the North, when the total number of registered candidates for all competitive examinations from the 19 states of the north continues stands much lower than that of one particular state in the South, when even the cattle business is now in the hands of roaming bands who have no conception of a brotherhood, or the modern state, you will realize what the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, meant by his two books, “Fear and Trembling” and “The Sickness Unto Death.” Relentless daily killings are going on in all the northern states. The northern political elite have allowed a new breed of wild youths, not sufficiently socialised even in line with the ‘Ranka dede’ culture to become dominant. Drugs, poverty, motiveless criminality and rapacious daredevilry have chased all the northern big men to Abuja. But for how long will they be in exile? Is Abuja itself still safe? Are some high-profile estates and exclusive neighbourhoods in Abuja not being quietly attacked these days?”

As property rates crash in the North, as investors flee, as local economies collapse, as re-desertification takes over many places, as farmlands and animal husbandry are abandoned, as the proceeds of crime become the new means for the unlettered, the threat to the children of the elite will multiply. The peace of mind of those who had the chance to make a difference but failed to do so will evaporate. The free-band society of cattle herders will collapse before their very eyes, as much of the North is taken over by degenerate marauders. I need not repeat the old observation that the late Abubakar Rimi would probably still be alive today if he had not encountered his ‘brothers’ on a lonely road in the dead of night. He spoke to them in Fulfulde and tried to remonstrate with them, but they did not listen to him. They robbed him, instead, and managed to spare his life after warning him to keep his preachment to himself. it was the trauma to Rimi’s existing heart condition, as well as the statement of his “brothers” that they were simply trying to “make a living” and feed their families, that saw Rimi out of this world a few days later.

The article, “Northern Nigeria: The Pretence Persists ended on this note: “A region that has the highest allocation from oil revenue, the highest earnings from tax mostly paid by other regions, the highest earning from bunkering and the highest earnings from the illegal mining of gold and other natural resources, is ravaged by poverty, underdevelopment and a burgeoning population of unemployable youths. Is this right? Is this normal? Is anyone paying attention – as the North goes under?

Today, matters have only gone beyond comprehension, in terms of finding a way out of the quagmire. The former leather works sites of many Northern states are not about to comeback. The textile factories and groundnut pyramids of Kano and Kaduna are tales from bygone times. Most leaders of the North, and also leaders of various regions today, do not seem to be doing any form of costs/benefits analysis in their expenditures and use of public funds.
