he role of the first lady in Nigeria has evolved over the years from being a ceremonial title to a position with significant influence and impact. I think my first recollection of an actual first lady was the late Mrs Maryam Babangida, wife of former military president Ibrahim Babangida who is widely considered as the first Nigerian first lady to have made a significant impact in this role. The late Mrs Babangida used her position to advocate for women’s rights and empowerment and promote health and education initiatives. Following her example, subsequent first ladies have continued to make significant contributions to the Nigerian society. From Maryam Babangida to Aisha Buhari, they have all played crucial roles in advancing causes such as women’s rights, health, education, and peace. And their contributions have helped to address the softer issues of governance, which sometimes fail to make it to the priority list. Since Mrs Babangida’s days, it has always felt like she set the standard for what the role of the first lady should be in a country. After her, I would subconsciously hold this as a standard for every other first lady coming after her on the Federal and State levels. While it is true that a few have fallen short, seeing the role as mainly ceremonial, there are those who have lived up to these expectations and also those who have surpassed them. With the country awaiting a new president, it is again important to reflect on the role of the first lady, the soft power she wields behind the scenes and what qualities she should represent to a nation of over 200 million people. Our cover this week looks at the three women who will potentially be Nigeria’s first lady in waiting, by the time the winner is declared. Each of them is unique in their own right and reflect the kind of diversity our country is known for. I hope you enjoy reading this and all the other fun and informative features. Here’s wishing you a lovely Sunday and the best for the week ahead. Love,

Konye

5 TIMES ASAKE GAVE US ‘’MR. MONEY WITH THE VIBE’’ STYLE’’ Ahmed Olode, popularly known as Asake, isn’t just famous for his music but also for his fashion sense, which sets him apart from his colleagues. Since hitting the limelight last year, Asake has proven to us more than enough times that he is a rising star with a unique sense of style to go with it. This Gucci x Adidas Trefoil Jacket looks tailor-made for the rising star. Paired with a Gucci crystal cotton shirt, Gucci bee tie, and mirror effect trousers just as the model has them on, it looks twice as nice on Asake. It takes someone with a great deal of swag and style to embody a look right off the runway or in a campaign, and Asake does so with ease.

If you ever doubted that Asake was on his way to becoming a style icon, this look would clear it up. We love how he styles this jean skirt as a top creative and stylish. Whats not to love about this fashionforward look?

A COLOURFUL CAMPAIGN SEASON By Yomi Owope Blue, green, red, white and a raft of African print, Nigeria’s two largest parties, the APC and the PDP, have blanketed the entire nation with campaign livery of every cut and fit. Ankara fabrics, plastered with the faces of presidential and down-ballot candidates, cover stadiums and town squares. And while some of the drapery will surely find their way to Eagle Square on inauguration day, most will end up in the garbage heap of history. And the candidates attempting to reflect the customs of our geopolitical zones, dress up to please the people, playing politics while fortuitously showing respect to Nigeria’s cultural diversity. Some of them have gone beyond the traditional branding of their parties to add a bit of zing to their personal label – the ubiquitous red cap of the kwankwasiyya in Kano, the lemniscate (or “S”) sign, synonymous with the Jagaban, and Peter Obi’s simple shirt and trousers, ostensibly reflecting humility or the fact that “dem

no dey give shi shi.” Whether all the theatrics will make a difference remains to be seen, but it gives the already invigorated electorate something more to look forward to on the campaign trail. Campaign jingles are also a part of the fun. Chants of “kererenke, Obi!” have filled the air from Owerri to Lagos. In Kano, Kebbi and Katsina, the melodious Hausa “Asiwaju” refrain is pumped through giant speakers in all arenas, while Atiku Abubakar’s campaign has churned out radio jingles in all languages. While not quite holding the dizzying dominance of “MKO is our man o,” they do help in adding to the electioneering experience of young voters, especially those voting for the first time. State campaigns also do a good job of appealing to local populations. Who can forget, “ambo ooo!” of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s 2015 campaign or Bukola Sakari’s “oyato jo!” jingle during his reelection crusade in 2007? This election has the potential to be both contentious and divisive; the fiery fervency of political operatives from all parties is palpable, sometimes to the point of fanaticism. But for the most part, this zeal speaks more to the passion and patriotism of Nigerians than anything else. At the end of the day and regardless of the outcome, February 25th is nearly here, and with all things being equal, a new president will place his hand on the Bible or Koran and shall be sworn in on May 29th, marking exactly 24 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.

NIGERIA DECIDES, AGAIN. By Yomi Owope

Sixty years after Nigeria became a republic and nearly 24 years since our return to democracy, citizens are heading to the polls once again to determine their next president in one of the most hotly contested elections in our history. Every election is consequential, and every successful round of voting reminds us that even though our union is not perfect, and our democracy flawed, the Fourth Republic remains uninterrupted since 1999. The 2023 Nigerian presidential and gubernatorial elections are poised to be a defining moment in the country’s history. With three major political parties, each with its own candidate for the presidency, this election is expected to be both fiercely contested and decisive. At the forefront of the political landscape are the two established parties, the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), along with the more recently emerging Labor Party (LP), whose candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, is now seen as a real force to contend with. The APC, the current ruling party, has put forward Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its presidential candidate. Tinubu is a former governor of Lagos State and is widely recognized as a visionary leader who has helped to modernize the state and position it as one of the economic powerhouses of Africa. He is also a strong advocate for democracy and good governance and has had a reputation for being a charismatic and effective leader. Tinubu arrived at the top of the ticket with 99 problems, and many blaming his party for Nigeria’s economic troubles and other crises. Recent reports of infighting within the APC and a long list of people who do not wish to see him become president have also added

to his woes. A tenacious fighter and political gladiator, he calls himself the frontrunner and arguably the man to beat on February 25. The PDP has nominated Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria and a successful businessman, as its candidate. Abubakar has been a vocal critic of the current government and has campaigned on a platform of economic reform and job creation. Despite his long political career, Abubakar remains a controversial figure, and many Nigerians question his commitment to democracy and good governance. In 2019 Atiku was well liked by the business community as someone who would promote a free market economy, and with former governor Peter Obi as his deputy, the votes of the SouthEastern states were all but guaranteed. This time, with Mr. Obi vying for the same job, the Turakin Adamawa is facing a very tough contest. Nevertheless, the party is confident of returning to power after eight years in uncertain opposition. The Labor Party, which has recently emerged as a serious contender in the election, has thrown a wild card into the mix. The party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, was once considered a long shot, but he has since gained traction and is now seen as a real threat even to his most vocal detractors. Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, is known for his strong economic management skills and has a reputation for being a pragmatic and innovative leader. He has also been a vocal advocate for greater accountability and transparency in government. What sets Obi apart from the other candidates is the strong support he has received from the younger generation of Nigerians who are hungry for change, seeing Obi as a candidate who understands the challenges facing their generation and is committed to addressing them. While Obi’s support among the youth is strong, with online polls consistently handing him the presidency, political analysts still see his weak polling in the Northeast and Northwest as a worrying sign that `he might not have the actual numbers to take him across the finish line. A well-attended rally in Lagos is one thing, but when the numbers start coming in from Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno and Bauchi, we might be hearing a different story. Everyone agrees however, that an Obi win will alter Nigeria’s political landscape for good.

HOW TO LAYER LIKE A PRO BOLA TINUBU

Layering is one of the biggest fashion trends of the moment, with fashion-conscious people worldwide adopting the style in various ways. This fashion trend allows you to combine multiple garments and create a unique look that’s stylish, comfortable, and versatile. If you’re new to the layering trend, here are a few tips and tricks to help you get started.

The Importance of Proportion When it comes to layering, it’s crucial to keep proportion in mind. The key is to find pieces that complement each other so the overall look isn’t too bulky or awkward. A simple base layer, such as a tank top, t-shirt, or lightweight blouse, is an excellent place to start. From there, you can add a variety of clothing, including kimonos, blazers, and jackets. It is also essential to choose pieces that fit well together. You can choose loose or tight garments, but they should work well in combination with one another. Playing with Textures Another key aspect of achieving the layering trend is playing with different textures. When layering, you can combine various fabrics and textures, such as cotton, leather, and denim. This helps create a dynamic look that’s visually interesting and fun to wear. When doing this, it’s important to consider how the fabrics will work together. The possibilities are endless, and experimenting with different combinations can help you find a unique and personal look.

Colour Coordination In addition to proportion and texture, colour coordination is also important when it comes to layering. Choose colours that work together and pieces that complement each other well. One approach is to stick with a monochromatic colour scheme, which involves layering pieces of the same colour in different shades and textures. This creates a cohesive, streamlined look that’s easy to wear. Another option is to use complementary colours, which sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. This creates a bold, eye-catching look that’s perfect for making a statement. Accessorising You can e the layering trend with accessories. When layering, you can add a range of accessories that can help tie the look together. This might include hats, scarves, belts, jewellery, and bags. Accessories can elevate your look and make it feel more polished and put-together. The trick is to ensure they work with your outfit’s other elements. For instance, you might pair a bold statement necklace with a simple t-shirt and blazer or a colourful scarf to add visual interest to a monochromatic outfit.

My name is Salewa,* I am 20 years old and have been working as a housemaid for Mr. and Mrs. Imoleayo since I was 12 years old. Mr. Seun, Mr. Imoleayo’s younger brother, stayed in the same building with us, but in a separate apartment close to the stewards’ quarters. He is a businessman who makes several business trips during the year but comes back every yuletide period. From the year I started working for the Imoleayos’, at age 12, Mr. Seun has been abusing me sexually. It started on a particular evening, while I was tidying up my washing chores, Mr. Seun walked up to me and told me to finish what I was doing, and follow him to his house. Sensing my reluctance, he waited for me to finish my task, and forced me to follow him to his apartment. On getting there, he asked me to take off my clothes and he forcefully had sexual intercourse with me. Mr. Seun threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone about the incident; afraid for my life, I endured it without telling any member of the family. I endured because being an orphan, I had no hope for an education and the reason I applied to work as a maid was because of the desire that I had to complete my secondary school education. I did not want to jeopardize my chances of getting educated. However, Mr. Seun’s presence around the house caused me emotional trauma, and I developed a strong hatred for him. Mr. Seun continued to sexually abuse me regularly and at one point, when I was in Senior Secondary School, I missed my period. I was still afraid because Mr. Seun did not fail to remind me each time of what he would do to me if I spoke about what was happening to anyone. So, I still did say anything nor tell anyone until my boss and her husband

Dear Reader, Welcome to the WARIF Survivor Stories Series, a monthly feature, where stories of survivors of rape and sexual violence are shared to motivate and encourage survivors to speak their truth without the fear of judgment or stigmatization and to educate the public on the sheer magnitude of this problem in our society. The Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) is a non-profit organization set up in response to the extremely high incidence of rape, sexual violence, and human trafficking of young girls and women in our society. WARIF is tackling this issue through a holistic approach that covers health, education, and community service initiatives. WARIF aids survivors of rape and sexual violence through the WARIF Centre - a haven where trained professionals are present full time, 6 days a week including public holidays to offer immediate medical care, forensic medical examinations, psycho-social counseling, and welfare services which include shelter, legal aid, and vocational skills training. These services are provided FREE of charge to any survivor who walks into the Centre.

WHO IS THE MALE FASHIONISTA? The term “fashionista” is often associated with women, but in recent years, the term has been applied to men as well. A male fashionista is a man who is highly interested in and knowledgeable about fashion and style. They are known for their impeccable sense of style, attention to detail, and ability to mix and match different pieces to create a unique and polished look. One of the key characteristics of a male fashionista is their willingness to take risks and experiment with different styles. They are fearless in trying new trends or pushing the boundaries of traditional men’s fashion. They also tend to invest in high-quality, well-made clothing and accessories that stand the test of time. A male fashionista’s wardrobe typically includes a mix of classic and trendy pieces. They may also have a few statement items, such as a bold-coloured suit or a unique pair of shoes, that help them stand out from the crowd. They also pay attention to the details, such as the fit and quality of their clothing, and they know how to accessorise to complete their look. Another important aspect of a male fashionista’s style is grooming. They take care of their appearance, paying attention to things like hair, skin, and nails. They also have a good understanding of grooming products and know how to use them to achieve the look they want. In recent years, the trend of men taking an interest in fashion has been on the rise. This is partly due to the increased representation of men in the fashion industry, such as fashion bloggers and street style stars, who have helped to break down the traditional gender roles associated with fashion. It is also a reflection of the growing acceptance of men who are unafraid to express their personal style, and the fashionista perfectly represents this.

got to know about the pregnancy and who was responsible. What they did next surprised me. They made arrangements for me to get an abortion and said nothing further about the matter. They did not reprimand the perpetrator but allowed him to continue living with us. I was disappointed and traumatized but the thought of continuing my education encouraged me, so I tried to move on. On another occasion, after Mr. Seun returned from one of his trips, he forcefully had sex with me again and threatened me. Some weeks after that, I took ill and missed my period. It was when Mrs. Imoleayo’s sister came to visit that she noticed how I looked and suspected that I was pregnant. She asked me if anyone had slept with me, and I told her. When they questioned Mr. Seun, he denied it, telling them that such an act was a thing of the past and that if I was pregnant, he had nothing to do with it. The next morning, I was taken to the hospital. The doctor listened to my boss’ complaints and told her that I had an infection which was the reason my period was delayed. He did not carry out any tests or examinations on me. The doctor then prescribed some injections and medications which a nurse came to administer at the

house daily for 6 days. When this was completed, my boss started giving me some drugs which looked similar to the ones she gave me the last time when they aborted the pregnancy that I had. At the resumption of the third term, I was not allowed to go back to school. The school management committee called to inquire about the reason for my absence, considering that I was a very brilliant student, and they told them that they were withdrawing me from school because I was stealing from them. The school management pleaded with them to

On getting there, he asked me to take off my clothes and he forcefully had sexual intercourse with me. Mr. Seun threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone about the incident; afraid for my life, I endured it without telling any member of the family.

allow me to complete the last term. They initially refused but decided later to allow me to return to the school. Upon resumption, the school authorities observed that I was looking pregnant, so they engaged me in a conversation. This time, I opened up to the head of the school and other teachers on the committee and they reported the case to the police. From the police station, I was referred to the WARIF Rape Crises Centre for medical support. At the WARIF Rape Crises Centre, I went through proper medical assessment, treatment, and counseling free of charge. I lost the pregnancy due to the medication that I was constantly given by my former employers. Although I felt sad initially, after the counseling sessions I felt better and grateful for life, because things could have gotten worse if had not left the abusive household. I could have lost my life through several abortions or continued abuse. The perpetrators were charged to court and sentenced to jail for crimes committed against me. The continued counseling sessions I have had at the WARIF Centre continue to help me maintain mental and psychological balance. I was placed in a shelter home where I wrote my WAEC and JAMB examinations and passed with flying colours and I have gained admission to study medicine at one of Nigeria’s prestigious universities. On a positive note, I believe that I can achieve my dream of becoming a medical doctor, owning an NGO, and becoming an advocate for sexual and gender-based violence. I hope, especially to help victims of rape and all forms of sexual abuse. I have a more positive outlook on life, many thanks to the WARIF! *Real name of the survivor changed for confidentiality

BEFORE VALENTINE’S IS NOT THE LOVE STORY WE EXPECTED, BUT STILL, IT’S WORTH THE WATCH

BOLAJI OGUNMOLA

Directed by Michelle Bello, ‘Before Valentine’s’ was first released to Nigerian cinemas in 2022 and then brought to Netflix on the 3rd of February 2023. The movie follows the drama-filled lives of four hairdressers in a salon and the unprecedented twists and turns their love lives take on the day before Valentine’s day The movie starred the likes of Yvonne Jegede, Shawn Faqua, Meg Otanwa, Uche Nwaefuna, Ben Touitou, Teddy A, Bolaji Ogunmola, Venita Akpofure, Baaj Adebule, Elozonam Ogbolu, amongst others. One of our favourite things about the movie is that about 99% of the plot was set in one day. This feat is uncommon for Nollywood movies, and writing it definitely would have required a bit of creativity, so kudos to the writers. However, it left lots of room for loopholes and far-stretched storylines. Regardless of this, Before Valentine made an effort to be as realistic as possible and although the entire plot isn’t airtight, Michelle Bello did a good job directing it. With plots like this, continuity is usually a huge part because while the audience might be watching a one-day event, it probably took weeks or, at the very least, days to film. The movie achieved a level of continuity that is found to be lacking in many other Nollywood movies, and that is worthy of high accolades to the continuity team. They did a good job covering it up if there were continuity errors. Set design-especially the saloon was top-notch. We would definitely be okay with sitting in that space for hours to get our hair or nails done, not to mention the non-stop juicy drama unfolding by

the minute. Any woman who watches this movie can attest that the saloon is a sure plug for hearing the wildest stories and gossip. Some gave off the Nigerian version of the ‘Barbershop’ vibe. Some interesting conversations and discussions took place in this movie, especially regarding Valentine’s day. Both popular and unpopular opinions were dissected, making us feel as if we could jump in and share our own opinions too. Whilst the dialogue, for the most part, was as realistic as possible; unfortunately, not much could be said for the acting. While some actors did their best to breathe life into not-so-creatively written characters, others were as bland as their poorly written characters and scenes. ‘Before Valentine’s’ might have been written to be a romantic comedy, but we got more drama than comedy, and while it’s also supposed to be a Valentine’s movie, it’s not completely as cheesy as you’d expect. Also, don’t get us started on some of the annoyingly very obvious brand advertisements in the movie. It’s a movie you’d rather watch with friends and then discuss some of the thoughts shared in the movie. Costumes and make-up score high points in this movie; everyone, for the most part, was dressed appropriately and according to character. ‘Before Valentine’s’ is not a movie that would blow your mind, but it is cute and pretty enjoyable- perfect for a girls’ hangout/sleepover. It has many cute aesthetics without much depth, so relax, watch, enjoy and don’t overthink it.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIANTS

T

here are two main types of exfoliants: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants, such as scrubs and brushes, work by physically sloughing off dead skin cells. On the other hand, chemical exfoliants use enzymes or acids to dissolve the bonds that hold dead skin cells together.

Some common physical exfoliants include: Sugar scrubs:

These scrubs typically contain sugar mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil.

Salt scrubs;

Similar to sugar scrubs, salt scrubs use salt as the exfoliating agent.

Facial brushes:

These brushes are designed specifically for use on the face and come in various materials, including bristles, silicone, and rubber.

Minimalist Glycolic Acid

The Ordinary Lactic Acid

Some common Chemical exfoliants include: Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs):

These acids, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, work by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be easily washed away.

Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs):

These acids are oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into the pores to remove impurities and dead skin cells. A good example is the salicylic acid.

When exfoliating, it’s important to start with a gentle product and to use it sparingly. Over-exfoliation can lead to irritation, redness, and sensitivity. It’s also important to use sunscreen after exfoliating, as the process can leave the skin more susceptible to sun damage. You must also pay attention to your skin type and customize your exfoliating routine accordingly. For example, if you have dry or sensitive skin, you may want to use a gentler exfoliant or exfoliate less frequently. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you can use a stronger exfoliant or exfoliate more regularly.
