nd though the age gap between Chief Rasaq and Shade is very evident, it is admirable and moving to see the couple still so in love after 25 years of marriage, especially in this time when marriage vows and divorce papers seem increasingly based on the theme of easy come, easy go. Since the couple met, dated, and got married, their commitment to each other has been continually toasted with the respect that immense value attracts.
Imperial Citizenship Launch
IIsn’t it funny how most of the articles on friendship typically go like “Top 5 Friends You Need to Have” or the “3 Types of Friends to Avoid”? Yet, we rarely see the ones prompting us to look inward at the kind of friend we are. It’s like we’re all experts on everyone else’s behaviour, but it’s all radio silence when it comes to ours. This week’s article, “In Our Corners, We Need These 5 Friends,” got me thinking about this —not about the friends might be lacking, but about the friend should aspire to be. You know, typically, when something goes awry in our friendships, we always believe that the fault lies with the other person. It’s a classic human reflex, but let’s face it, sometimes the issue is staring back at us in the mirror. I’m not pointing any fingers here. But sometimes, it really is just what it is, intentional or not. The question now is, can you honestly say you are a good friend? I know life is tough, and we’re all managing our circus the best we can. Another question - when was the last time you genuinely expressed gratitude for the little things your friends do for you? How often do you reach out to that friend who’s always a text away, not to ask for a favour but just to check in? It’s easy to overlook these gestures, but they’re the nuts and bolts that hold the delicate structure of friendship together. If everyone aimed to give rather than to receive, wouldn’t we all be richer in what matters?
Remember that golden rule? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It’s like friendship 101.
Treating our friends with the kindness and respect we hope to receive shouldn’t be revolutionary, yet here we are, discussing it as if it were a forgotten relic. I’m not suggesting that you morph into a saint. No, that’s neither practical nor particularly fun. Just be a good friend. And yes, being a good friend doesn’t always mean the affection will be reciprocated. That’s just life—unpredictable and often unfair. But you know what? That’s okay. We can’t control how others respond to our kindness, but we can control how much we give. Pay attention to where your energy thrives and where it withers away. The universe always drops hints about who deserves a spot in your inner circle. Know when to dial it back and when to keep pushing forward. Most importantly, dont exhaust yourself chasing any friendship. It’s hardly worth it . Friendship should be a two-way street, not a close !
Overall, the rules are surprisingly straightforward. Be mindful, be giving, make sacrifices, and, dare say it, put someone else first once in a while. For the natural-born givers, don’t lose yourself in the pursuit of appreciation. Set some boundaries, and don’t let unmet expectations break your heart. So , maybe, just maybe, if we follow these rules, the world will be a better place….or not. Lol. Either way, think it’s worth the try. Love,

WHY YOU HAVE A WARDROBE FULL OF CLOTHES AND STILL HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR.
The modern consumer lifestyle has led to an accumulation problems related to clothes. We have a wardrobe full of clothes, but let’s face it, most of us have nothing to wear! 10% of the clothes in the average person’s wardrobe have never been worn and probably never will be. But despite this, the person will still have feelings of having nothing to wear. There are numerous putative explanations as to why this is happening.
Without a good visual of what clothing options are available, it can be easy to forget what clothes we really own. A lot of women complain of having nothing to wear when what they really mean is they can’t find anything. Have you ever tried on an outfit and then changed it because you felt it wasn’t quite right? Then afterwards, you couldn’t quite remember what looked wrong with it in the first place. Chances are it was simply that there weren’t the right shoes or the right top, etc. Without a complete memory of all the clothes available, you render many outfits failures.
OVERWHELMING CHOICES.
Overwhelming choices may not sound like a bad thing, but when it causes stress, time wastage, and a feeling of never having anything to wear, it becomes your worst style enemy. It’s no coincidence that most women wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. A wardrobe full of unworn or rarely worn clothes in many different styles and moods can leave you feeling insufficiently equipped for any occasion. A useful method to resolve too many options is to create different sections within your closet or different storage areas. By doing this, it limits the options you have when deciding on an outfit and also gives a visible assertion of what is being worn and what isn’t. Another is making the challenging choice of eliminating every item of clothing that hasn’t been worn in the last year.
EMOTIONAL SHOPPING.
Emotional shopping is buying clothes as a pick-me-up when feeling emotional, whether it is a case of celebratory shopping or when feeling down. Making emotional purchases is another key reason many of us have a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear. Clothes shopping in either state of mind is overwhelming and will often result in impulsive purchases that you will later regret. Shopping when happy and overconfident can lead to purchasing items such as an overly extravagant party dress that you never had an occasion for, or too many fancy and impractical shoes.
On the other hand, shopping when sad can lead to retail therapy purchases, which often result in buying items that are not an accurate reflection of the shopper’s usual style.
INCOMPATIBLE WARDROBE PIECES.
Your wardrobe is full of individual pieces that suit your personality, but do they all work together?
Understand compatibility and work on being more selective when introducing new clothes to your wardrobe. Often, many people buy clothes without consideration of what other clothes might go with them. This can lead to having an abundance of clothes that look good on their own, but don’t match anything else in your wardrobe. The result is a mish-mash of different clothes of different colours that don’t complement each other, leaving you with a wardrobe full of clothes that don’t seem to go together. Typically, the more colours you have in your wardrobe, the harder it is to mix and match your clothes. While it is possible to create nice outfits with different coloured clothes, it’s much more difficult to make these pieces interchangeable. This can be quite frustrating, as it gives the illusion that you have many clothes, when, in reality, you don’t have many options for what to wear. Often, you are forced to wear full outfits as a single piece, because the individual pieces of clothing don’t go well with anything else you have. This leaves a rigid decision for what to wear on a given day, furthering the illusion of not having enough clothes.
CLOTHES DON’T FIT. We are all guilty of buying clothes we absolutely love that aren’t our size, hoping to fit into them one day. Stop letting clothes taunt you or remind you of the weight issues you have. Whether you’ve lost or put on weight, get rid of the clothes that no longer fit. Though alterations for changes in weight are fairly simple and can majorly improve the fit of a garment, some alterations can be quite complex and, at times, costly, which becomes a damn waste of time. If it doesn’t fit, please give it out.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK YOUNG FEMALE NIGERIAN AUTHORS
Nigerian authors are writing some of the best literature out there today. There’s something about their stories that makes them extremely enjoyable and yet wholly edifying. As we take time to read more Nigerian literature, we find that the issues addressed are global ones, the laughter is golden, and the wisdom gained is necessary. Considering that Nigeria is one of the most populous countries in the world today, it is not too surprising that Nigerians are putting out a sizeable amount of literature. There are well-established authors, but there are also many who are just starting out. In the world of modern Nigerian literature, a few names shine bright and have captured the minds and hearts of many readers with their wonderful command of words, but the work of today’s young writers has not gained the sufficient critical attention and appraisal that it sorely deserves. And young Nigerian women literary writers are not an exception. Though there are many, a few stand out, and rightly so. They have put Nigeria on the literary map and continue to lend their voices through their writing to speak up about their country, Nigeria. Here are some new female voices in Nigerian literature who are worth taking a look at.
By Funke Babs-KufejiAyobami Adebayo is another hot-to-trot young Nigerian author on the rise. She first gripped the literary community with her short story, “The House My Father Built,” which was shortlisted for the 2012 Kane Prize for African Writing. Then, in 2017, her first novel was published. Titled Stay with Me, this fearlessly powerful tale tells a story of separate but parallel lives in Nigeria—lives split by the 1980s political turmoil and the anxiety and strains of conflicting moral values and infertility. This novel immediately earned itself huge acclaim, and in addition to being shortlisted for the aforementioned Kane Prize and the RSL Ondaatje Prize, it was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and shortlisted for the 9Mobile Literature Prize. Her second novel, ‘A Spell of Good Things’, which explores the themes of political corruption, social injustice, and domestic violence, earned her a spot on the 2024 Dylan Thomas Prize list, one of the most prestigious awards for young writers, named after the Swansea-born writer, Dylan Thomas. Awarded for the best published literary work in the English language, written by an author aged 39 or under. This author is one to keep an eye out for in the coming years—more than likely, she is going to shake things up quite a bit in the literary community, particularly with her concern for sociopolitical issues and strong value-driven themes in her work.

The story is set in both 19th-century Benin and 21st-century London and mixes historical fiction, romance, and mystery. Okojie’s second book, Speak Gigantular, is a compilation of short stories, which have been applauded for their eccentricity and Okojie’s flair for the strange and symbolic. AYOBAMI ADEBAYORASAQ & SADE OKOYA
25 YEARS AFTER
When you probe beneath the surface and attempt to understand what keeps the engine of marriage of MFR, Aare Rasaq Akanni Okoya, to his beautiful wife Shade purring like a lion and how their love has endured, impacting positively on their finances and becoming the reference point for many, as though there is a Rasaq-Okoya love culture that is not properly spelled out, it becomes evident that the typical building blocks of a respect-worthy relationship have moulded their love to the state, which has visibly overwhelmed a lot and indeed branded them a wonder-couple.
And though the age gap between Chief Rasaq and Shade is very evident, it is admirable and moving to see the couple still so in love after 25 years of marriage, especially in this time when marriage vows and divorce papers seem increasingly based on the theme of easy come, easy go. Since the couple met, dated, and got married, their commitment to each other has been continually toasted with the respect that immense value attracts. They have impressed, they have shut critics up, and they have been successful guideposts for those looking at attaining a similar level of triumph. Together, they have forged ahead not only in love but in business, running a flourishing group of businesses that have made them a formidable team. In this interview with Funke Babs-Kufeji they talk about their journey of 25 years and more.
PHOTOS KELECHI AMADI OBI25 years later, what valuable lesson have you learned from being married to an older, powerful man like your husband?
Razaq: I have learned so many valuable lessons from my husband. The most valuable lesson I have learned from him is how to successfully run the business on a daily basis. My husband is an extraordinary leader; he is extremely motivating, charismatic, and has a very hands-on approach to everything. I always try to emulate and reach the standards he has set. These life lessons have been valuable to me because money cannot buy them, and they cannot be taught within the walls of any institution. am constantly humbled by his wealth of knowledge, experience, and wisdom.
It is commendable to have stayed married this long in a time where separations and divorce are prevalent, as well as being in a polygamous household. What will you say has been the staying power of your marriage?
Razaq: A marriage is a union that is meant to last a lifetime. One should understand that before they go into it. You must do your best to make it work.
Shade: give all the glory to Allah the Almighty for the grace to be married to my husband, and I’ve committed my marriage from the very beginning to His will. With God as the foundation, it has been good. The importance of compromise and, above all, patience cannot be understated; every single
day, patience must be put into practice. My husband has a broad range of experience, and in respect to this, have learned not to be in a hurry to respond during any disagreements we have; rather, I listen carefully to be sure properly understand his point. This way, find myself learning from him while recognising my own mistakes. A strong determination to succeed in my marriage has always been a priority for me, and patience and humility have seen me through to date. I see my husband not just as my lover but as a friend and role model. believe his love for me and his protection of me have also really helped our marriage.
You married your husband in his 50s; now he is a lot older. Can you tell us what about him still endears you to him?
A strong determination to succeed in my marriage has always been a priority for me, and patience and humility have seen me through to date. I see my husband not just as my lover but as a friend and role model. I believe his love for me and his protection of me have also really helped our marriage.
Shade: I have always loved the fact that he is a very intentional, tenacious, mature, and generous man. Up until now, everyone who knows my husband has said these qualities are true about him, and they are still very much there. This is one of the major things I have loved and still love about him. He has also always been very caring and hardworking, always finding things to do to keep himself occupied.
For 25 years, you have watched your wife immerse herself to fit into your lifestyle and grow into the woman she is today. Tell us what you are most proud of about her having gone through all she did?
Razaq Shade has made me incredibly proud. She is very intelligent
and is always eager to learn; she constantly sets new goals for herself and keeps doing all she can to meet those goals. In this respect, she is very much like me. She reminds me of myself in my younger years, when I couldn’t stop moving. However, when you work together, plan together, and strive together, the work keeps you moving and keeps your love going.
If you could relive any moment from your relationship in the last 25 years, what would it be?
Razaq: I am exceedingly happy that there have never been any dull moments with us. We travel and go on cruises together, educating ourselves on the beauties of life, and we are still doing the same things up until now.
Shade: am grateful to God for blessing me with such a wonderful husband and friend. Every moment spent with him is priceless.
With marriage, there has never been a one-size-fits-all approach to a successful marriage, but having been married this long, it is safe to say you have both done something right. What do you think is the foundation of a strong marriage?
Razaq: Our marriage for one day has been difficult because we understand each other and love our children. This should be the foundation of any marriage. Respect, compromise, and mutual understanding are all also very important. My wife, Shade, is incredibly loyal, humble, and honest, so this allows for full transparency between us.
Shade I don’t believe there is a particular formula for a successful marriage. It takes two hands to clap, so two people love each other enough to come together as husband and wife. know love, trust, and respect are incredibly important as the foundation for any strong marriage. But in my case, I believe, apart from that, I have been able to add not just value to my husband but to the marriage by giving my very best. Being married to a man like him, need God’s wisdom every day to hold the house and business together firmly.
What is your advice for couples who are thinking of getting married?
Razaq; My advice will be to fully understand that marriage is a commitment that you make to the other, for better or worse. People should think about it deeply and be ready to adjust to the home that they find themselves in. They must also be prepared to go the extra mile to be good and make compromises for the sake of their whole family structure. In life, there are trials and tribulations that one will go through with his or her partner, and one should be prepared for these challenging moments because they will come. Also remember, during those challenging times, the reasons you love your spouse and be actively committed to preserving the marriage.
Shade; Put God first in everything you do. Learn to pray together, because a couple that prays together stays together. They must be good friends and be able to sustain their marriage by enjoying being in each other’s company and loving each other sincerely. Considering that married a much older man, I have had to remember to be respectful and loyal at all times without obviously losing my identity. I have to make sure he is assured that am fully committed to him the way he is committed to me.
Now that your husband is a lot older, he seems to be taking the back burner in the affairs of Eleganza Industry, crediting the success of the newly reformed factory to you. Tell us about your journey into the manufacturing space and how you, as a woman, are able to cope with leading this predominantly male factory?
Shade: Having an industrialist as a husband has greatly inspired me to become not just a diligent wife but an astute businesswoman focused on making an impact in society. My journey into the manufacturing space has been carefully and diligently taught to me by my husband, and being married to him has commanded a lot of respect for me. It’s almost like they see him when they see me, so the respect is there. As an industrialist, when see people using our products, it gladdens my heart to see how much impact we as manufacturers are making on households across our nation.
Tell us more about the newly reformed Eleganza Industry under your leadership. What changes or improvements have been made since you took over?
Shade: As Managing Director of Eleganza, have done a lot in terms of restructuring and organising to ensure sustainable growth by saving costs in all that we do at the new Eleganza Industrial City. My longterm plan is to position Eleganza as the number one plastic manufac-
turing organisation in all of Africa. Since I assumed my position as the Managing Director (MD), Eleganza has grown into a much bigger and better structured factory with a new vision, mission, and culture for the work.
Eleganza Industrial City is a massive project on 40 hectares of land. It is called an industrial city not only because of the production of various household items being produced there but also because it is a step towards achieving my husband’s desire to establish cottage industries within Nigeria. The chairman, my husband, is very passionate about this project, and Allah has been so kind and good to him in terms of giving him the financial ability, strength, and health to realise his dreams and goals for the new Eleganza Extension site. He has solely financed this project, and we pray Allah will continue to bless him so that we can continue benefiting from his grace of wealth. resume early at the factory every day from Monday to Friday, and sometimes on Saturdays if I have no social commitments. I work tenaciously to make sure everything runs smoothly, like my husband taught me. I’m grateful for the wealth of experience have gained from him in the manufacturing and construction business, and don’t take it for granted because it has helped to run not only the business but has also opened my eyes to new possibilities, which have led to the introduction of new products to the Eleganza Industry.
Before now, Eleganza was best known for their durable coolers and biros, but more products are being manufactured now. Tell us what the factory now produces and where these items can be
recycled materials and are modified to ensure we have the highest quality of products. As a company, we do not produce single-use plastics, and we strive to maintain a zero-waste policy.
The manufacturing industry in Nigeria is one of the most difficult to sustain due to a lack of power, unstable FX rates, a shortage of skilled labour, and the likes. How have you been able to navigate these challenges to make sure Eleganza Factory stays afloat and runs at its optimum?
My daily prayer is for our government to introduce cottage industries in all the states of the federation and incorporate them into the school syllabus with apprenticeship preprograms. Educating our youth on the resources we have been blessed with as a country and how they can use them to solve problems or be useful for Nigeria’s daily needs should also be prioritized.
Shade Power is very crucial in manufacturing; a stable exchange rate is also essential, amongst other things. The authorities know all the burdens and challenges of manufacturers; we have shared this with them on many occasions. They need to bring lasting solutions to the power and FX issues in the country. We predominantly run on diesel generators and thus have had to come up with creative ways to reduce our profit margins in order to stay in business. Logistics is another major factor that has to be looked into critically, as it plays a major role in the price of goods. Because we don’t have good transport and distribution channels, this makes things a lot more expensive than they should be.
Razaq I have been trained in this industry right from my youth, and as a result, I’m extremely aware of how necessary it is to engage our youths while they are young and train them in cottage industries. This will make them extremely familiar with the terrain and difficulties involved in the industry. It will also make them highly capable and skilled in this area. If we use this approach to train our youths, manufacturing will become a part of their daily lives, and they will not only be happy but satisfied doing it because they will be able to apply the creativity of their youth to develop competitive advantages for themselves. This way, they will also be interested in manufacturing and will find themselves constantly thinking about what and how to produce.
Manufacturing is a major driving force for any country’s economy, but in Nigeria, the manufacturing industry is almost nonexistent due to the factors mentioned above. We have more industries shutting down and investors leaving. What, in your expert opinion, should the government do to revive this sector?
Razaq; My daily prayer is for our government to introduce cottage industries in all the states of the federation and incorporate them into the school syllabus with apprenticeship preprograms. Educating our youths on the resources we have been blessed with as a country and how they can use them to solve problems or be useful for Nigeria’s daily needs should also be prioritized. Take, for example, the food shortage in Nigeria. A lot of people are currently interested in fish farming, but most of the feed for the fish is imported, which makes fish farming extremely expensive. Our universities should be able to conduct research on what is available locally that can be used or turned into fish feed. Fish can’t eat eba or other local processed foods, but with serious research, Nigerians can tailor their strengths to bring lasting solutions. The utilisation of our various local agricultural products and raw materials should be primarily and practically taught. It should be instilled in our youth and prioritised as a subject on the school syllabus. All these natural resources and opportunities specific to Nigeria should not be left untaught. It will help our youths to be industrious, leading them to a better life with jobs.
purchased for wholesale or retail?
Shade: We currently have over 20 products, with many more still in their development stages. Our present range of products includes plastic chairs, tables, school tables for all ages, iron beds (including baby cots), etc. We have cooling boxes, food warmers, and travel luggage of various sizes and designs. Baby diapers and female sanitary pads. We also manufacture soaps ranging from beauty to laundry to multipurpose use. We have pet caps, preform bottles, ladies shoes, men’s slippers, reusable plates and cups, casseroles of different sizes, plastic drums, crates, and plastic baskets. Our products in the development stage include the new, improved, modernised version of the Eleganza biro and a few others, which will be announced when the time comes.
At Eleganza, we are committed to making sure the Eleganza name remains the guarantee of every customer. Today, I am proud to say that Eleganza is bigger, stronger, and better, prioritising high-quality products as always. Razaq: We are currently establishing and enhancing more of our showrooms. The showrooms are very elegant; you can find most of our products there. We also look forward to bringing on board as many distributors as possible in each of the 36 states of the federation.
As a leading player in the production of plastic products, which we all know contribute to environmental pollution and consume energy, which leads to high carbon emissions, which also contribute to climate change. What sustainable measures as a manufacturing company are you taking or have in place?
Shade: A lot of our products are produced using a high percentage of
Shade: There is hope for Nigeria. We are still a developing nation, and our prayer is that whatever policies the government puts in place will have a positive effect on the wider economy and manufacturers like us. The exchange rate is coming down gradually, and we hope and pray it comes down even more.
Now that your wife is the MD of Eleganza, as chairman, what are your plans for the factory to exceed you?
Razaq: Shade is incredibly capable. She is a good manager in every sense of the word and is capable of appropriately allocating the factory resources to ensure sustainability for Eleganza in the long term. Our children are also keen to help her ensure that the Eleganza of today and tomorrow will be capable of fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.
Lastly, what is your advice for women who want to go into manufacturing, especially in Nigeria?
Shade Don’t let gender be an issue. The truth is, if you can get on with work and excel at dealing with the challenges that come with it, there will be no room or reason for anyone to bring up your gender. Always focus on maximising your available resources to deliver first-class quality products at the most affordable rate to meet the demands of customers. Everyone wants to work with the best person for the job; the best person for the job is the best, regardless of their gender. Women who want to go into manufacturing must also be extremely hardworking, they must have a passion for it and be determined to succeed.

They are our safe space to vent, our safe space for open conversations and guidance. A loyal confidant is one who we can always count on when we are emotionally down and need to be lifted back up.

THE
SURVIV RS
By Dr. Kemi DaSilva-IbruDear Reader, Welcome to the WARIF Survivor Stories Series, a monthly feature, where stories of survivors of rape and sexual violence are shared to motivate and encourage survivors to speak their truth without the fear of judgment or stigmatization and to educate the public on the sheer magnitude of this problem in our society. The Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) is a non-profit organization set up in response to the extremely high incidence of rape, sexual violence, and human trafficking of young girls and women in our society. WARIF is tackling this issue through a holistic approach that covers health, education, and community service initiatives. WARIF aids survivors of rape and sexual violence through the WARIF Centre - a haven where trained professionals are present full time, 6 days a week including public holidays to offer immediate medical care, forensic medical examinations, psycho-social counseling, and welfare services which include shelter, legal aid, and vocational skills training. These services are provided FREE of charge to any survivor who walks into the Centre.
My name is Miriam and When was barely a year old, my mother made the courageous decision to leave my father due to a history of domestic violence. It was a harrowing situation where both our lives were at risk. Despite pleas from my father and his family, my mother refused to return to that toxic marriage. She had tried to reconcile before, only for my father to resume his pattern of physical, verbal, and psychological abuse. Thankfully, my mother found a wonderful man two years later, and she had more children with my stepfather. He embraced me as his daughter, and never suspected he wasn’t my biological father until my eighteenth birthday. During a speech at my birthday celebration, one of my uncles praised my supposed biological father for always treating me as his own. This revelation stunned me, and after the ceremony, I confronted my mother, adamant about meeting my biological father. As my mother recounted the ordeal of humiliation she endured at the hands of my biological father while pregnant with me, she offered a heartfelt apology. She described a terrifying incident when he forcibly separated me from her back, but by sheer luck, she managed to grab hold of me before any harm came to either of us. Despite her explanation, I remained steadfast in my desire to meet my biological father. Reluctantly, she reached out to him, arranging a meeting on a mutually agreed date. When he arrived at my mother’s office, where we awaited him, he expressed remorse for his past behavior toward both my mother and me. He pledged to embrace his responsibilities as my father moving forward.
the house we visited and running a prosperous business. Meanwhile, my stepmother held a position as a civil servant. On the third day of my arrival, my father began touching me inappropriately, but I thought it was just his way of enacting and reuniting with his long-lost daughter. Alas! I was wrong because the next day after my stepmother had gone to work, my father came into the room with a knife, and threatened to kill me if I did not cooperate. Afterwards, he tied my hands, while he forcefully removed my skirt and raped me there. He repeated the same thing on three other occasions, and he threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone. He seized my phone and told my mother that it was bad and that he needed to fix whenever my mother called, he will stay beside me while reminding me of the threat so I would not report the rape incidents.
After about two weeks of consistent rape, was angry and depressed, I began contemplating suicide. I tried to talk to my stepmother about the incident, but she was just insulting me without hearing me out. My father who usually worked from home decided to go out to see his clients. As soon as my stepmother left for the office the same day, ran to the nearest call center where called my mother and reported the incident to her. My mother was furious and asked for the address. I told her and she told me she was on her way.
My father returned home pretending to forget an item, but I knew he wanted to rape me as usual, pleaded and pleaded but he did not stop until he raped me again, but I knew that would be his last. Shortly afterward, my mother arrived with some policemen and my father was arrested and taken to the police station. My non-biological father insisted that the case be charged to court and my father punished for crimes committed against me.
At the police station, we were directed to the WARIF Centre, where received comprehensive medical examinations, treatment, and psycho-social counseling, all at no cost. The counseling sessions were exceptional, aiding in my emotional healing and bolstering my self-esteem. The counselor emphasized that the fault lies with the perpetrator, not me, which was a crucial realization.
Participating in Group Therapy Sessions provided a sense of camaraderie with fellow survivors, affirming that I am not alone in my journey toward healing.
It’s been two years since the incident, and I can confidently say that my hope has been restored, and I’ve achieved emotional, mental, and psychological healing. None of this would have been possible without the professional support provided by the WARIF Centre. My deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff and management of WARIF Centre. You are all truly remarkable!
*Real name of the survivor changed for confidentiality
My father informed us that he had remarried, though their union hadn’t brought forth any additional children, leaving me as his sole offspring. He implored my mother to permit him to introduce me to his wife, my stepmother, a request she initially declined. However, I managed to persuade her, and she eventually agreed. During his week-long stay in town, we journeyed together to my father’s residence. Upon arrival, I observed that he had achieved considerable success, owning

The Nightlife Industry And Yhemolee’s
Diverse Influence
In the ever changing landscape of Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment scene, Yhemolee stands as a multifaceted force, weaving his talents seamlessly through various realms of creativity. With a career spanning years, — starting all the way from Obafemi Awolowo university (OAU) — Idowu Adeyemi has adorned numerous hats. From driving the nightlife entertainment scene forward, to captivating audiences as an event host, to tickling funny bones as a comedian and content creator, to gracing our screens as an actor. Yet, his journey extends far beyond the spotlight, delving into the realm of entrepreneurship with the recent launch of his culinary venture, YL Chops.
The influence “Olowo Eko” (as he’s fondly called by friends and fans alike) transcends the boundaries of traditional entertainment spheres. Behind the scenes, he’s been a guiding force, a silent architect that has played a significant role in shaping the trajectories of rising stars. Among his notable feats, Yhemolee played a pivotal role in the ascent of Asake, the afrobeat sensation who has taken the global music scene by storm. Remember that viral video that was recorded in a car? Exactly! However, amidst his multifaceted career, Yhemolee hasn’t been immune to controversy, occasionally finding himself in the news for the wrong reasons.
Yhemolee; the first time I ever heard that name was from a hilarious video a long time ago. The growth from that “skinny guy” with the short dreads to this point, is very evident. Can you give us 5 important things you’ve learnt on your journey?
In my journey, have learnt that it’s not enough to be hardworking, backing it with prayers and the right circle will also help you. I have also learnt to believe in myself more than anything because know now that there’s nothing I put my mind to that I can’t pull off.
You can always rebrand. You don’t always have to remain in a certain stage because you’re unsure, it’s okay to rebrand, it’s okay to start again. Carry your friends along. There’s nothing as beautiful as winning with your friends so always put them on. While pursuing money, always have a doctor on standby because it’s important to remain hale and hearty.
Right now, if anyone asked me who Yhemolee is, would call you a Nightlife entrepreneur? Would I be correct?
Nightlife entrepreneurship is just one out of the many hats I wear. I am a comedian, a lifestyle influencer, an actor, a fashion model and yes, an entrepreneur, both in the nightlife and the food industry. I recently launched my business - YLchops, it’s set to cater to people who love to eat.
How did you transition and venture into the nightlife industry?
When got into nightlife, went in as a consumer. The Government had just given us go ahead to be outside after the lockdown had been eased and like everybody, I ran outside. I used to visit the club before the lockdown but it was nothing like visiting after because it felt like I had just tasted freedom. After partying with my friends for a while, got the big idea to start hosting parties because I realized that there was a market to tap into and took it. I had my first big party in 2021, it was called “Ultra Luxury Party” and I was confident that I was going to pull it off. At the end of that first edition, my expectations were surpassed and I knew I had found the one.
What sort of opportunities would you say lie in the nightlife industry?
I’m asking because they’re maybe people out there looking to find a way to get into this industry.
The opportunities are not limited to just being a club PR and selling tables for certain percentages. The industry, like every other industry, has created job opportunities for people. You and your degree can thrive in the industry. Behind the glitz and glamor, we have administrative bodies that ensure that everything is in check from the finances to the inventories to the management. You can also be a content creator in the Nightlife industry, we have a number of
creators that are doing well and if you feel like your skill is not well represented, penetrate the industry and show us that we’re incomplete without you.
Can you share a memorable experience or moment that solidified your passion for nightlife entrepreneurship?
It has to be hosting my first international party and people actually pulling up. Hosting in my home country is totally different because I know my audience here. However, outside the country, it’s a lot of new people with different behaviors that you haven’t totally studied. When had my first party outside the country, was amazed by the number of people I was able to pull and it boosted the confidence already had in myself.
I genuinely believe the Nightlife community and experience in Lagos has also played a huge role in the “promotion” of Lagos as a go to city if you’re looking for fun. Would you share the same sentiment?
Partying in Lagos should be something everyone should aspire to do at least once in their lifetime. It’s an experience and like to see it as an attraction whether you’re a tourist or not. There are people who come to Lagos with “party with Yhemolee” on their bucket list and I try as much as possible to fulfill that because my job is to make
people feel good. The saying “Ain’t no party like a Yhemolee party” is as serious as day.
What role do you think the Nightlife industry has played in the promotion of Afrobeats or Nigerian music in general? believe there has to be a correlation.
The nightlife industry in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole has definitely played a significant role in the promotion of Afrobeats and Nigerian music in general. Nightclubs, bars, and music venues serve as crucial platforms for emerging artists to showcase their talents and for established acts to connect with their fans in an intimate setting. Let’s even take it a step further; Imagine you’re a foreigner and a song comes on that gets everybody so pumped, subconsciously you’d register the song and subsequently start listening to it. The nightlife industry also serves as a hub for networking and collaboration among musicians, producers, promoters, and other music industry professionals. It provides opportunities for artists to build relationships, exchange ideas, and collaborate on projects, which all contribute to the growth and evolution of Nigerian music on both the local and international stages.
Not too long ago, we got to really see Yhemolee the actor in Prime Video’s original “Gangs of Lagos.”
Should we expect any more acting from you in the near future?
Definitely! Not a lot of my new followers know that was an actor first. It’s a dream for me and love being on screen. I plan to be in more productions so be sure to be on the look out for YL!
gives plenty of room and avenues to get distracted. How do you balance that fun side with your work side?
What you call fun is what I call work. I never get carried away where money is involved, not even as a joke. There’s time for everything and work for me is fun.
Can you discuss any challenges or setbacks you’ve encountered while building your personal brand, and how you’ve overcome them?
It has to be waking up one day and seeing unfounded rumors about me on the internet. I have had my words misconstrued by blogs quite a number of times but to be lied against? I didn’t think it was possible to lose everything I’ve worked for until almost lost it. I’ve learned that for every layer of tough skin you build, something else will happen that will make you add an extra layer.
We all know the importance of looking good in the entertainment business, and for the most part you definitely have that on lock!

With 1.5 million followers (on Instagram alone), no one can deny the influence that you possess online. How do you balance authenticity and promotion when collaborating with brands or promoting events through social media?
With me, what you see is what you get. The brands I work with reach out to me because of my genuineness and how relatable am — that’s just it. A good example is Bet9ja. As someone who loves sports and places bets a lot, it’s only right that I work as an ambassador for the brand because of my transparent history with sports.
Speaking of events you always put together a lit one. From Club X, to TLBF. What’s the secret of throwing a great party?
There’s no big secret. Everybody wants a luxury party and my job is to give them that. Whenever I want to throw a party, my team and I come together to brainstorm, we have meetings upon meetings with our sponsors because like every other business, we have to do some convincing and put in the work.
It’s not too far-fetched to say that your job
How do you approach fashion as a form of self-expression, and how does it intersect with your identity as a nightlife entrepreneur and influencer?
I dress to feel good about myself, don’t think I have had an era when I wasn’t well dressed — not even when I was broke. My style improves everyday, I always make sure to wear what I’m most comfortable in while keeping it stylish.
What are some essential fashion staples or signature pieces that you believe every individual should have in their wardrobe for a night out? Let’s paint a picture, I’m about to step into Bayrock and I want all eyes on me when I walk through the door. Can you share any fashion tips or advice for individuals looking to elevate their nightlife attire and make a statement?
Great shoes! You need to be able to dance at a Lagos party so invest in your shoes. Perfumes too, don’t step out of your house looking all fresh and fly without using deodorants and perfumes. It’s not a good look.
Excluding Ashluxe (Ha ha ) what are some of your favorite African brands?
IcebyCW, Bay Ice, Thirsty labs, High Fashion and ISB originals.
Can you share any upcoming projects or collaborations that we can look forward to?
By all means. have a newly launched a food Business - ChopwithYL, and you have to patronize me. Also have a few films on the way that I can’t give much details about but you will know about it when it’s time.
I’d definitely be looking forward to that call YL!
OCCASSIONS THAT CALL FOR YOU TO SUIT UP
There are many occasions that call for a man to wear a suit. Knowing what these occasions are and how to handle them is imperative to maintaining the proper wardrobe.
By Funke Babs-KufejiFORMAL EVENTS
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a suit is formal events. Think: weddings, christenings, funerals, formal dinner parties, and with heads of state or other important individuals. These are all occasions that frequently call for a suit. Suits are an obvious choice for these events, as they are automatic social signifiers denoting dignity, prestige, and authority—the very meaning of formality. Moreover, suits are appropriate at these events because of their capacity to convey a message about the wearer. It’s the old story: you want to show the world you’re sensible and reliable, and right off the bat, people judge others on appearance.
SKINCARE COULD BE THE NEXT TOBACCO
In the past, consumers have placed significant trust in leading cosmetic companies to provide skin care products that will enhance and protect their skin. Unfortunately, our trust has been abused and betrayed on numerous occasions by many companies that include hazardous and toxic ingredients in their skin care products. This has resulted in various negative effects on the skin, such as skin irritations, dermatitis, and allergic reactions. Some of these effects are only mild and temporary. However, research has shown that some toxic ingredients, over time, can be just as bad as inhaling tobacco, they can result in much more serious effects, such as damaging the immune system, causing chronic effects on the skin, and even cancer. When choosing skin care products, it’s essential to be mindful of the ingredients they contain and always check the ingredient lists before buying. If you want your skin and the rest of your body to stay healthy, you should only choose products with safe and effective ingredients and avoid putting chemicals that disrupt our endocrine system—obesogens, neurotoxins, developmental toxins, immunotoxins, reproductive toxins, and teratogens—on our skin.
found parabens in breast cancer tissues, suggesting a link between these chemicals and cancer. Parabens are believed to affect hormone function by mimicking oestrogen, potentially leading to increased growth of breast cancer cells.

BUSSINESS MEETINGS
A suit and tie are almost mandatory if you are attending a business meeting with co-workers or clients. Depending on the field of work, different types of suits may be appropriate for various business meetings. If this is your first job and you are uncertain, you should always ask the boss to clarify what attire is appropriate. If it is a first meeting with a client, first impressions are crucial. In this situation, it is better to be safe than sorry, and it would be wise to dress in smarter attire. You want to come across as credible and professional. Wearing a suit can be a psychological prop that affects how we feel and, consequently, how we are perceived. Research has shown that using suits as a type of uniform can lead to better negotiation results.
SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS
Other events, such as gala dinners, award receptions, and various fundraising activities, are befitting of a suit. Here, the standard of dress will usually be optional, but in the quest to stand out, dressing well should always be a priority. Stick to a suit with a bit of individuality, and if the occasion calls for a higher standard of formality, you may even want to go all out with a tuxedo. Always ensure that you are aware of what other people will be wearing, as turning up to an event in a tux when everyone else will be wearing lounge suits will not make a good impression.
PHTHALATES
DBP, DEHP, and DEP are phthalates, a type of artificial chemical commonly utilised to add flexibility to plastic and PVC. They are also found in cosmetics to maintain fragrance in perfumes and aid in softening and moisturising the skin. Unfortunately, these chemicals have been discovered in both our bodies and the environment and are associated with disrupting hormone activity. Consequently, concerns have been mounting regarding their potential contribution to an increased likelihood of breast cancer, as well as their effects on reproduction and development, especially in male infants. While many European countries have banned this family of ingredients in cosmetics, the FDA in the USA still allows its use.
PARABENS
Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives in cosmetic products. They can be found in lotions, shampoos, facial cleansers, make-up, and lipsticks. Multiple types of parabens are typically used in combination with other preservatives. Some well-known parabens include methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Products labelled “paraben-free” usually refer to the absence of propylparaben and butylparaben, which are considered more toxic. While parabens have been considered relatively low in toxicity, there is concern about potential health issues from repeated, long-term exposure. Parabens can penetrate the skin and remain in body tissue. Studies have
Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is a popular cleansing agent and foam booster, but it’s also a strong irritant. It’s most commonly present in body wash, bubble baths, and shampoo and has been shown to be toxic to organ systems, causing toxicity, skin irritation, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and biochemical or cellular changes. Symptoms of SLS poisoning include laboured breathing, diarrhoea, vomiting, and skin irritation.
LEAD
Lead is a naturally occurring chemical element that has gained a lot of notoriety in recent years. Despite this, lead is occasionally added to a variety of cosmetic items, including body lotions, lipsticks, eye shadows, pressed powders, and shampoos. Lead exposure at high levels has been linked to kidney damage, blood and neurological system effects, and there is evidence that lead is a carcinogen. It is one of the key components in skincare products to stay away from.
HYDROQUINONE
Although it’s an active component in many medications, hydroquinone may also be found in certain anti-ageing treatments and scents. It is used by some skincare companies to lighten skin and decrease the formation of melanin. It might surprise you to learn, that it’s also a component of superglue and paint. Skin irritation, cancer, and organ damage have all been linked to this substance. The use of hydroquinone leads to rough skin, dermatitis, and sun sensitivity.
