...NOT IN THISDAY STYLE? THEN YOU’RE NOT IN STYLE WHEN HARRY & MEGAN CAME CALLING!
Can I Tag You Instead?
As someone who eagerly awaits the AMVCA (Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards) each year, must admit that, like almost everyone else, my main interest lies in the red carpet. The awards are undoubtedly significant, but it’s the fashion parade that truly captivates my attention. And this year, the AMVCA red carpet did not disappoint! You know, there’s something truly magical about how the fashion industry evolves with each passing year. The creativity keeps reaching new heights, bringing with it more innovation, bold designs, and unexpected surprises. It’s a delight to witness the evolution of fashion at such events, where established designers and emerging talents showcase their best work. Seeing the pool get wider, including new brands and younger stylists, is so amazing. So so beautiful.
For a long time, there has been an undeniable symbiotic relationship between the fashion and entertainment industries, and events like the AMVCA serve as a vivid reminder of this connection. Celebrities and influencers have been the driving force behind fashion trends, and this influence has skyrocketed in recent times. These days, they don’t just shape trends; they mould consumer behaviour and even steer the course of entire fashion brands. Their power is staggering, and their imprint on the fashion industry is indelible.
feel the need to mention this because of the viral AMVCA drama involving a Ghanaian actress who, by the way, is a regular on the AMVCA best-dressed list and an upcoming Nigerian designer. For those of you who are not on socials, it’s storytime. The designer felt slighted and went on a media rant because she didn’t receive any social media credit for contributing to the actress’s outfit, even though she was paid her full fees. She had hoped for an Instagram tag even though she was given the prior option to choose between exposure and payment, and she picked the latter. What’s your take? It’s a sticky situation, isn’t it? Some argue it’s an opportunity for exposure, while others decry it as exploitation.
In my opinion, it should be a give-and-take situation. As Davido would often say, “We rise by lifting others.” Celebrities should recognise the value of giving credit where it’s due. People have bills to pay, and the economy is really tough at the moment. Expecting free services in exchange for a tag can sometimes be unrealistic. A fair payment can go a long way in helping young designers build their brands. At the same time, young designers should also never underestimate the power of collaboration. Sometimes, these sacrifices are necessary to climb to the top. It is what it is. For all of us, it’s crucial to keep in mind the larger goal: the growth and triumph of the Nigerian fashion industry. This industry is making strides, and it’s our collective duty to bolster it by supporting local designers and brands. Back to the red carpet, we have shared a few of our favourite looks. You can find even more stunning images on our online platforms. How’s your day going? Take this as your cue to shop from a Nigerian brand this week. You won’t regret it.
BEAUTY REDEFINED
When it comes to women, society has, for far too long, been dictating the terms of what beauty is and isn’t. Throughout history, women have grappled with the societal expectations imposed upon them. Likewise, the advertising and entertainment industries have commanded significant influence in shaping these beauty standards. However, it is essential to recognise that the power dynamic is not completely one-sided. As consumers, we possess agency and play a crucial role in determining the success or failure of advertisements. Through our choices, we wield the ability to endorse or challenge the messages that resonate with us most positively.
environment conducive to self-expression and individuality.
Nevertheless, the prevailing notion that social media has single-handedly sparked the discourse on redefining beauty standards is misleading. Women have been engaging in conversations about these standards for generations. It is an integral part of our intricate lives, constantly evolving and redefining itself. Our collective narrative has consistently questioned and reshaped these standards throughout history.
Within our diverse communities, women have tirelessly strived for progress, challenging the status quo with their unwavering determination. Our collective efforts have contributed significantly to redefining these beauty standards. We have shattered narrow conceptions and expanded our understanding of beauty, embracing a broader spectrum of identities, shapes, and appearances.
From the suffragettes who fought for women’s rights to the activists pushing for body positivity and inclusivity, today we have triumphed over adversity. Across generations, women have defied the confines of societal expectations, fostering an
In our relentless pursuit of self-acceptance, we have seized control of our own narratives and challenged the belittling stereotypes imposed upon us. Women have embraced their strengths, celebrating their diverse talents, intellect, and inherent worth. Redefined beauty is now, more than ever, about finding who you are, discovering your freedom, and expressing who you are unapologetically. It’s no longer about having a standard anyone must live up to.
It’s the idea that each person is, in a sense, a standard or a different facet of beauty.
As we continue to redefine these beauty standards, we reclaim the power to define our own perceptions of beauty, free from external pressures and constraints.
So, let us not forget the tireless efforts, discussions, and strides that have brought us to this point. While social media provides a platform for the amplification of our voices, it is undeniable that our journey towards redefining beauty has been ongoing. Together, we will forge ahead, united in our pursuit of a future where women are empowered, accepted, and celebrated for who they truly are.

BLACK: WHY YOUR WARDROBE NEEDS MORE DARK MAGIC
By Funke Babs Kufeji
Ever had one of those days where you stand in front of your wardrobe, paralysed by indecision, as if the right outfit could solve all your problems? We’ve all been there. But what if told you there’s a secret weapon hanging right there, waiting to save the day? No, it’s not that sequined jacket you bought on a whim. It’s your trusty black outfit. And here’s why having a collection of black clothing is not just a good idea—it’s practically a style philosophy.
Versatility at Its Best
Black effortlessly transitions from day to night and from casual to formal. You can wear a sleek black dress to the office with a blazer and transform it for an evening out by swapping the blazer for a statement necklace and heels. That same black dress can be worn to a wedding or a cocktail party with the right accessories.
Slimming and Flattering
Let’s face it: we all have those days when we don’t feel our best. Black outfits are famous for their slimming effect, creating a sleek silhouette that can boost your confidence instantly. Whether it’s a pair of black jeans that hug you in all the right places or a black blouse that flows just right, black can be incredibly flattering. It draws the eye away from areas you might feel self-conscious about and highlights your best features. I
Easy to Mix and Match
Another reason to love black is how easy it is to mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe. Black pairs beautifully with virtually any colour, pattern, or texture. Whether you want to tone down a bright piece or add a touch of sophistication to a casual outfit, black is your go-to.
Never Out of Style
Fashion trends come and go, but black remains a constant.
It’s a timeless classic that always looks relevant. Think of icons like Audrey Hepburn in her little black dress. These looks are as chic today as they were decades ago.
Effortlessly Chic
There’s something inherently sophisticated about black. It exudes confidence and class, making you look polished and put together with minimal effort. This is especially useful on those days when you’re running late or just can’t decide what to wear.
Practical and Low-Maintenance
Let’s not forget the practical side of things. Black is incredibly low-maintenance. It hides stains and wrinkles better than lighter colours, meaning you can go longer between washes and ironing sessions. This is particularly handy for travel or busy schedules. Plus, black tends to hold its colour longer than other shades, so your pieces will look newer for longer.
A Canvas for Accessories
Black outfits provide the perfect canvas for showcasing accessories. Whether it’s a chunky necklace, a bright scarf, or a pair of statement shoes, black allows your accessories to shine.
It’s a great way to express your style and keep your outfits fresh and unique.
Suitable for Any Occasion
Finally, black is suitable for any occasion. From job interviews to weddings, black is always appropriate. It strikes the perfect balance between formal and relaxed, making it a safe choice when you’re unsure of the dress code.
THE POWER OF A MINDFUL MORNING ON YOU
It is said that a morning makes or breaks the day, perhaps a bit simplistic, but is there any truth to this? Yes, and it is of the utmost importance because the morning sets the tone for most of your day. If you start the morning in a hurried condition, in a cloud of agitation and stress, as a rule, it’s hard to maintain composure and a sense of serenity of mind throughout the day. It becomes clear that the morning is a valuable period that should be used consciously.
It is true to say that habits determine our routine, which, in the long run, determines absolutely everything. A properly coordinated morning routine will, without fail, bring very concrete benefits, create presence of mind, and go on to build up forcefulness of character, energy, and direction. Follow these suggestions step by step to create the right energy for the day.
By Funke Babs-Kufeji
START ON A POSITIVE NOTE
Starting your day on a positive note is perhaps one of the most important forms of self-care one can imbibe, and creating a positive start to the day is something you need to arrange the night before. If you plan to get up at six, make sure you are in bed and close to sleep at the time you’ve arranged. If you want to listen to ten minutes of soft music before you hit the gym to start your day, prepare the music and organise your music player so that all you have to do is press “play” when it’s time to begin. The objective here is to greet the day with peace and positivity, and this is only possible if we take care of the details the night before, before the pressure of the new day has a chance to get between us and our plans.
PRACTICE MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION
AFFIRMATION AND POSITIVE SELF TALK
To get your day started positively, make affirmations a part of your morning rituals. Start off by saying a few basic ones, and as time goes by, your list of affirmations will grow, and this will increase your personal development. Writing your affirmations on sticky notes and placing them in different spots around your living space also serves as visual cues that can make your affirmations stay present in your mind, making it easier to stay on track and focused. The more you use them, the more easily you can bring your thoughts into line with the words you tell yourself. Self-confidence and belief in yourself help pave the way for a great day. Affirmations allow you to manifest the change you want to bring about in your life, which in turn facilitates change.
HYDRATION AND HEALTHY BREAKFAST
In the morning, prioritise having breakfast no longer than two hours after you wake up. It is important to replace the energy you’ve lost fasting overnight, as well as to stabilise your blood pressure and kick-start your metabolism for the day. You don’t need to eat a heavy meal for breakfast; a bowl of oatmeal or pap, scrambled eggs, some fruits, or a sandwich should do, and if you’re really busy or you can’t decide what to have for breakfast, a glass of water and a banana with nuts will go a long way. Drinking a glass of water when you wake up also helps you get started for the day.
In this era of constant connectivity and interruption, mindfulness can go a long way. Mindfulness is being present or making a conscious effort to be in the moment. It also involves focused thinking and the practice of awareness. The fact is, there is so much to be aware of when the day starts. In the mornings, we should be aware of the need to be grateful, aware of the possibilities that the day holds, and aware of the good that one can do. Meditation is also a wonderful morning ritual to practice. It quiets us, bathes us in an overarching calm, and generates unity and contentment within. It resets an often-noisy world of sensations back to quiet. Affirmations and a prayer of gratitude also make a whole difference in our day.
EXERCISE AND STRETCHING
Epinephrine and dopamine (commonly known as the ‘feel-good’ chemical) levels in your body are at an all-time high in the morning, which is why we often feel great once we wake up. Taking advantage of these “feel-good” neurotransmitters on a daily basis by starting your day on a high with exercise can positively affect our productivity throughout the day and even our long-term health. It is also a known fact that stretching in the morning can reduce tiredness and increase your muscle strength. It’s important to remember that the body and mind are interconnected. Focusing on your body is as good as focusing on the well-being of your mind. Such activities help set a mindful tone for the rest of your day, reminding you to be more mindful or present as you start your day.
READ OR LEARN SOMETHING NEW
Choosing something you love and learning it every day in the morning is a quick way to learn fast and also start your day right. For example, if you’re interested in English literature, then grab some literature and read it. If you’re interested in programming, then code something every day. If you’re interested in the arts, then draw something every day. Reading or learning something new will take no more than 30 minutes of your morning, It’s very doable. Start small.

TEN THINGS - THE AMVCA 10TH EDITION
Lights, camera, accolades! The lights dimmed, the stars shone, and the red carpet rolled out in all its glory for another spectacular edition of the AMVCA›s. With the dust settled, the confetti swept away, and the red carpet (and blue carpet) rolled back up, it›s time to reflect on the highs, the lows, and everything in between from this year›s Award show. Here are ten highlights from the AMVCA.
By Ayo Lawal
1. GIVE VEEKEE JAMES HER FLOWERS - ALL HER FLOWERS!
Firstly, we have to talk about fashion finesse! When it comes to slaying the red carpet game, one designer reigned supreme at the AMVCA’s - Veekee James. Let me take your mind back to MET Gala 2023, A-list celebrities draped in Thom Browne’s masterpieces, each look a symphony of elegance and edge that left fashionistas everywhere weak at the knees. This can be likened to what Veekee James achieved at the AMVCA’s. She didn’t just make waves; she orchestrated a tsunami of style with her impeccable creations. Veekee James’ collection of eclectic yet sophisticated designs stole the spotlight and became the most talked-about look of the night. Celebrities like Toke Makinwa, Uche Montana, Tommie Adeoye, Funke Akindele, and Osas Ighodaro shone in her designs.
2. DON›T REALLY KNOW HOW TO SAY THIS... BUT THIS YEAR FELT MORE LIKE AN «AWARD SHOW»
If you attended the live show, you definitely know what I’m talking about. For someone who has constantly attended the AMVCA’s since 2018, this year felt like I was coming home to a calmer, saner environment—with just the right amount of sparkle. The guest list seemed tighter as if the organisers handpicked the attendees for their love of the craft, their work in the creative/ entertainment industry, and the number of their Instagram followers. And let me tell you, it was a breath of fresh air. Sure, the glitterati were there, and the buzz was still alive, but it felt... quieter, in a fantastic way.
3. TEN YEARS WITH IK OSAKIODUWA
For a whole decade now, IK has entertained and delighted viewers with his signature blend of wit, enthusiasm and charm. His ability to connect with the audience and bring out the best in the attending stars has made the AMVCA a highly anticipated annual event. Looking back, we’ve seen him handle everything from technical glitches to emotional acceptance to badly taken jokes that often lead to online prosecution to working and adapting with different co-hosts with consummate ease and professionalism.
“As we raise a glass to a decade of the AMVCAs, we also celebrate IK Osakioduwa, whose hard work and brilliance as the host of the award ceremony have been instrumental in the event’s success for the past ten years,” plastered boldly on the Africa Magic Website.
4. THE AWARD RECIPIENT›S FELT MORE DESERVING
Let’s get one thing straight: nobody deserves not to win. But there are those moments when you hear a name announced, and you’re left scratching your head, thinking, ‘How did that happen?’, ‘Did they really earn it?’ ‘Was it just politics at play?’. We have seen this play in previous editions. But this time, as the envelopes were torn open and the names were revealed, there was a collective nod of approval, a unanimous acknowledgement that these were the rightful recipients of recognition—Well, for the most part. Could this be attributed to the AMVCA shifting from a public voting system to a jury-based selection process for its most prestigious awards? Sure, there may have been a few raised eyebrows here and there, a couple of moments where we all paused to ponder the choices. But overall, there was a sense of contentment, a feeling that justice had been served and that each winner truly deserved their moment in the spotlight.
5. «BREATH OF LIFE» !!!
Every year leading up to the AMVCA’s, there’s undeniably a crowd favourite to bag the awards. This year, that film was “Breath of Life.” This powerful film received an impressive 11 nominations across various categories, including Best Movie, Best Director, and Best Lead Actor. Ultimately, Breathe of Life walked away with six wins. Lead actor Wale Ojo finally got his recognition, nabbing the Best Actor award. Adedoyin surprised many with his win for Best Supporting Actor. Breath of Life showcased the immense talent behind the scenes. BB Sasore was named Best Director, masterfully bringing this poignant story to the screen. The film also won Best Sound, affirming the skills of sound designer Grey Jones Ossai. Now to my favourite award recipients of the night: Chimezie Imo and Genoveva Umeh. As a lead actor in Breathe of Life—the biggest winner of the night—Chimezie Imo fully deserved to take home the Trailblazer award. This prestigious honour is given to an actor with exceptional talent and potential, affirming Imo as an up-and-coming force in Nollywood. He joins a long line of Trailblazer winners who have gone on to become major stars, and there is no doubt this is only the beginning of an illustrious career.
6. NEO WAS THE BEST DRESSED MALE
Every year, you expect African men to bring it every time to the AMVCA red carpet, and this year was no different. However, amid the sea of impeccably tailored suits and avant-garde ensembles, it was Neo Akpofure who truly stole the spotlight. Adorned in a recreation of British designer Vivienne Westwood’s iconic “Slave to Love” corset jacket from the MAN Fall 1996 collection, NEO exuded an air of effortless sophistication and daring creativity.
9. IYA RAINBOW AND RMD RECEIVING THE INDUSTRY MERIT AWARD
7. GENUINELY, IT’S HARD TO PICK THE BEST DRESSED FEMALE
One thing was abundantly clear: the women came to make a statement. From the moment the pictures started crossing our timelines— before they even graced the red carpet—it was evident that each leading lady had brought her A-game in the style department. From metallic gowns to voluminous tulle creations, the ladies of Nollywood dazzled and delighted with their experimental yet elegant
ensembles. Statement sleeves, sequined bodices and thigh-high slits added just the right amount of edge and drama. But with so many stunning looks on display, it was difficult to choose just one woman who best epitomised the glamour and grandeur of the night. Is it Nana Akua Addo in a custom Yolo Koonson dress or Osas Ighodaro radiating elegance in Veekee James, the task of singling out a single best-dressed female feels near impossible. Every outfit was a masterpiece in its own right.
8. THE ICONIC PERFORMANCES
As the night unfolded, it became clear that the evening was destined to be more than just a celebration of cinematic achievement. It was also about celebrating the heartbeat of Africa through music, each note carrying the weight of history and the promise of the future. Awilo Logomba’s electrifying performance ignited the atmosphere, his rhythms echoing from the heart of Congo - A vibrant tribute to the unity and diversity that define the AMVCA’s and the African spirit. Seyi Sodimu and Shaffy Bello hit us with a blast from the past, performing their 1999 hit ‘Love Me, Jeje,’ making us all feel like we’re back in the good old days. Amidst all of these beautiful sounds, Chike’s poignant tribute to the late Mohbad served as a solemn reminder of life’s fragility and the immortal legacy of artistic brilliance. Other notable night performers included Mr Rodo himself, Adekunle Gold and KCee.
Amidst the glitz and glamour, two illustrious figures stood tall, their names inscribed in the annals of Nigerian cinema history: Richard MofeDamijo, affectionately known as RMD, and the beloved matriarch of the silver screen, Idowu Philips, fondly popularly known as Iya Rainbow. At 62, RMD proves that age is but a number, effortlessly commanding the screen with the charisma and gravitas only a seasoned maestro can provide. His presence is magnetic, his talent transcendent, and his charm eternal. From his breakout roles in classics like “Violated” to his recent tour de force performances in hits like “Black Book” and “Postcards”, RMD continues to redefine what it means to be a leading man. And then, there’s Iya Rainbow, a national treasure whose illustrious career has spanned decades, enchanting audiences with her incomparable talent and indomitable spirit. For many of us, she’s more than just an actress; she’s a fixture of our childhood, a constant presence on our screens.
10. LAYI WASABI IS A COMEDIC GENIUS
Nominated not once but twice in the fiercely competitive category of ‘Best Digital Content Creator,’ Layi Wasabi had already cemented his status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of online content. His unique blend of humour, wit, and infectious energy had endeared him to millions of fans across the globe, earning him a reputation as one of the brightest stars in the digital universe.

WHEN
HARRY & MEGAN CAME CALLING!
Over the last weekend, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, embarked on a humanitarian visit to the country to advance the mission of their foundation, the Archewell Foundation. It is their first international tour since they relinquished their royal roles in 2020.
The crux of their visit centred around the Invictus Games, one of several events hosted by the foundation to promote mental health education worldwide through various initiatives and programmes aimed at destigmatizing mental health issues and providing access to resources and support for those in need.
Created by Prince Harry, the games focus on wounded, injured, or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans. They take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing, with the aim of inspiring recovery, supporting
rehabilitation, and generating a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country.
Nigeria first participated in the Invictus Games at the latest cycle of the competition in September 2023, and the couple were invited to the country by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
On Friday, May 10, the royals made their first entry into the country aboard a British Airways flight via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 5 a.m.
Prince Harry, 39, and Markle, 42, then proceeded with the first leg of their tour to Light Way Academy, Abuja. There, both Prince Harry and Markle actively engaged the pupils through dance and singing songs while passing on the message of mental health.
“If you take anything from today, just know that mental health affects every single person in the entire world. And the more you talk about it, the more you kick the stigma away,” said Prince Harry.
After that session at the school, Prince Harry took a short trip to Kaduna State, where he was warmly received by the state governor, Uba Sani, accompanied by a dance troupe. The trip culminated in a visit to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in northern Kaduna.
The prince met with dozens of injured, recuperating servicemen. Individually, he walked up to each of

them to inquire about their well-being, shaking hands and giving a smile of encouragement. He was also taken on a tour around the facility by Colonel NS Onuchukwu, who explained in detail the advancements and milestones recorded at the facility.
As a parting gift, he was presented with two portraits: one where he is with his mother, Princess Diana, and another with his wife, Markle.
The second day of the tour kicked off with so much adrenaline and pump in a sitting volleyball game organized by the charity organization, Nigeria Unconquered, which is responsible for putting together teams for the Invictus Game. The prince sat with injured army veterans on a court flanked by spectators, Markle included and joined the game, fiercely defending his team (named after him) to score points. Clips of these moments flooded social media platforms like TikTok, with many applauding his humility. While the Prince took centre stage at the games, Markle had some women’s empowerment to attend to.
Accompanied by the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and media entrepreneur Mo Abudu, Markle cohosted the Women in Leadership Nigeria event.
The gathering served as a platform to address critical issues impacting women. Markle emphasised the importance of female role models and mentors in advancing female empowerment, highlighting the need for girls and women to have supportive figures to guide their journey towards success.
On a more jovial note, she delved into her lineage, revealing its connection to Nigeria discovered through a genealogy website.
“What has been echoed so much in the past day by men and women alike is, ‘We weren’t surprised when we found out you were Nigerian.’ And I say that mostly as a compliment to all of you because what they define as Nigerian women is: brave, resilient, courageous, powerful, beautiful,” said Markle.
To mark their final day in Abuja, a soiree was held in their honour at the Nigerian Army Officer’s Mess, where both of them radiated in their immaculate suit and evening gown.
The final day of the visit was spent in Lagos as the couple proceeded to Ilupeju Grammar School, Lagos, where a partnership between Archewell Foundation and Giants of Africa was unveiled. The couple was joined by Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors and Founder of Giants of Africa.
According to their official website, the partnership ensures that Giants of Africa will be able to expand programming to include an additional adaptive court and accessible sport for the community of Abuja.
Centred around the basketball court established by Giants of Africa, the organisation hosted a clinic for approximately 50 boys and girls, including wheelchair basketball athletes. Led by skilled coaches, the session incorporated skill development and team-building activities. The couple engaged with the attendees, sharing a touching exchange with Paralympian Dennis Ogbe, who highlighted the importance of inclusivity and the youth’s role in shaping Africa’s future. The Duke also participated in the lively ball-bouncing drills, infusing the day with sports, laughter, and profound conversations.
The couple later attended a reception by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who warmly welcomed the royals at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, accompanied by decorated officers and a cultural troupe to add colour to the entourage.
“We are, indeed, happy for what they are doing, especially for our military men, on the conversation around mental health issues and how they can
galvanise their various NGOs to ensure that people who require their support, both in the military and private, can seek that support. Mental health issues are all around us,” Sanwo-Olu noted.
Following this, the couple had meetings with three distinguished traditional rulers: the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe; the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi; and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.
The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex culminated in a crescendo with a cultural reception in Lagos and a polo match fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.
The couple received a warm welcome with a stunning pre-game parade. It showcased enthusiastic youngsters adorned in polo gear, joyfully waving Nigeria’s green and white flags. The procession continued with older children on horseback, setting the stage for a day brimming with sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The spirited competition between the teams, playfully dubbed Duke vs Duchess, injected an extra dose of excitement into the event, culminating in the Duchess’s team securing victory with a score of 5-3. The couple then awarded medals as a token of appreciation for the players’ remarkable talent and unwavering dedication. To conclude the day, a Charity grand ball was held at the Polo Club grounds where all proceeds where donated to the Nigeria Unconquered Organisation to help continue to support injured soldiers.
Truly, the visit left a lasting impression, becoming a cherished memory that countless
eagerly anticipate reliving in their lifetime.

THINGS YOU
THINK ARE HELPING YOU LOSE WEIGHT BUT ARE NOT
Everyone has a theory about the best way to lose weight—personal diet maxims, reliable tips, and tricks. But in the whole barrage of theories about weight loss, we can really get lost. Some of the beliefs about weight loss are so often repeated that they are held as true, but they don’t help to lose weight.

SKIPPING BREAKFAST
So many people skip breakfast, thinking it will help them lose weight. The logic goes like this: “If I don’t eat breakfast, I have fewer calories to burn off.” Although that may be true, it often ends with a snack or overeating later in the day. It doesn’t help with maintaining a healthy metabolism, and you need energy to maintain or gain muscle. Truthfully, most people need to eat when they wake up to boost their metabolism and prime their bodies for an energy-packed day. When we eat an hour after waking, it stimulates the body, turns our internal clock on, and supplies the energy we need to get through the day.
RELYING ON DIET PILLS
Not so long ago, weight-loss pills were the talk of the town. Everyone was talking about what kind of diet pills work and which ones are easy to get. The sale of diet pills exceeded millions of dollars in a few short years. This amount was the cost of our misery. Weight-loss pills do not work. They are effective only if they are prescribed by a doctor. Plain and simple. Weight loss pills contain something that is recommended by health experts to take with a pinch of salt: caffeine. Enteroendocrine cells specialise in sensing a lot of what you eat and, according to the British Journal of Nutrition, play an important role in how you absorb whatever passes through your mouth.
EXCESS CARDIO WORKOUT
Belief: “I ran on the treadmill for 2 hours tonight! Burning them calories!”
Reality: If you are trying to keep muscle and lose fat, long cardio sessions are going to work against you because the body will start tapping into your muscle for energy. This is usually the reason people end up looking skinny, but with no muscle definition—a term called “skinny fat.” The type of cardio that’s much more beneficial for maintaining muscle, building muscle, and burning fat is high intensity interval training, or HIIT for short (note: bodybuilders typically don’t do HIIT because it can affect your muscle strength by 10% and endurance; this isn’t necessarily a bad thing for short-term purposes if your main goal is to shed fat).
DIETS
Eating habits involved in losing weight are very important. Otherwise, you may eat the wrong foods, which can cause weight gain instead of weight loss. A diet that swings between strict and anything is a common mistake that people often make when trying to lose weight. Many people may be starving one day, then overeat the very next day. The yo-yo diet does not lead to permanent weight loss. In fact, it is unhealthy and can lead to nutritional deficiency.
CONSUMING TOO MUCH OF “LOW-FAT”
AND “DIET” FOODS
People often wrongly presume that foods with low or no such fats are calorie-free. But, the calories that are present in such items will, in due course, be converted into fat. In fact, a zero-fat or low-fat diet will not necessarily help reduce the body’s fat content. When manufacturers take out fat from foods, they invariably throw in added chemicals, artificial flavouring, and artificial colouring agents to make the product taste “almost” as nice as the original. These will cause the end product to carry somewhat the same calorie count. In fact, fruits like avocados and olives are high in fats, but these fats are monounsaturated fats that promote the reduction of belly fat. In addition, old studies have shown that low-fat diets may increase the risk of digestion-induced cancers.
OVEREATING HEALTHY FOODS
But here’s the problem, especially if you’re looking to shed a few pounds, just because something is healthy doesn’t mean that calories aren’t relevant when eating it. For instance, one of those new Chocolate Almond Coconut Clif Bars has 260 calories! By comparison, three regular Oreo cookies have 160 calories. Well, three Oreos are a whole lotta yum and go to the very heart of massive nutrition failings for very few calories (America!). So, if you’re looking to lose weight, don’t fool yourself into believing that a small, protein-packed, nutrient-dense brownie—a square barely the size of two dice—is the only option when you’re really trying to stay under your calorie threshold.

THINGS I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU COULD DO IN LAGOS
Lagos is a cosmopolitan city that has many cool experiences to offer. From sampling street foods to attending local festivals, immersing yourself in the vibrant lifestyle, indulging in the energetic nightlife scene, and enjoying diverse native entertainments, there is no shortage of experiences to be had in Lagos. For those who live here or come here often, I bet you think you have been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt. Well, you are wrong. Lagos is a true treasure, filled with so many uncharted experiences that will make you think you are in unfamiliar territory. So, if you are looking for new experiences in the bustling city of Lagos that offer a refreshing and exciting way to have fun and discover the city in a way you never thought possible, then this is for you.
KAYAKING ALONG THE LAGOS LAGOON
You know you can go kayaking in Lagos. Never thought of it? Kayaking is a great way to unwind, and if you have never done it before, you must give it a try. It’s difficult at first but becomes easier as you go along, and there are good instructors on the ground to help you navigate the waters and stay safe. And when you are done, we are sure you will tell anyone who cares to listen that you went kayaking on the Lagos Lagoon, giving a detailed account of the great adventure you have had paddling through the waters. There are many spots to go to get the experience; Google is your friend.
SCUBA DIVE
Did you know you can go scuba diving here in Lagos? I bet you didn’t know. But yes, you can go diving under the Atlantic to see the heart of the city from a totally different perspective. When you descend into the quiet world of dolphins, fish, abandoned jetties, quiet landing getaways, and small boats that appear bigger-looking than when in full throttle, you will appreciate the complexity and contradiction of the city of Lagos. As you journey beneath the water, the sights and sounds of the bustling city fade away, replaced by a sense of calmness and tranquilly that can only be found below the surface. The water around you teems with life, from schools of colourful fish darting to and fro to majestic dolphins gracefully gliding through the water. There is a sense of timelessness, as if the hustle and bustle of city life above is nothing but a distant memory. Exploring further, you will come across hidden gems tucked away in secluded coves and forgotten corners of
the waterway. Old fish factories stand as silent reminders of a bygone era, while abandoned jetties beckon you to imagine the stories they could tell. When you emerge from your underwater journey and return to the surface, you will surely carry with you a newfound appreciation for the city and its many layers. To dive into the Atlantic is to peel back the facade of Lagos and glimpse the beating heart that lies beneath. Don’t you really not want to experience this? To get closer to going on this adventure of a lifetime, you must take lessons. Start that journey today, and don’t forget, Google is your friend.
HOT AIR BALOON RIDE
Another unique adventure to be experienced in Lagos is taking a ride in a hot air balloon around the city. Floating high above the city, the balloon takes you on a whole new journey to view the city from a perspective you have never seen before. The colourful hot air balloon will gently glide through the sky, with the cool breeze gently caressing your face and allowing you to feel a sense of freedom as you soar above the busy streets below. The experience will leave you feeling elated and grateful for the opportunity to see Lagos from a different perspective. From the bustling markets to the glittering skyscrapers, every aspect of Lagos will come alive from this bird’seye view. Floating through the clouds, you will see the city in a new light, appreciating its beauty and vibrancy from a different perspective. This ride doesn’t come cheap, though; it can set you back as much as 200k to 400k, but is it worth the money? Most definitely.
SURFING IN TARKWA BAY
Tarkwa Bay is a good place for surfing. Yes, you heard right, surfing! If you have always wanted to learn to surf, Tarkwa Bay is the place to go. Not only is it a cool place to learn how to surf, but the waves are calm and safe for beginners, unlike other locations. Here you will find a community of surfing enthusiasts who are willing to give you surfing lessons that aren’t as pricey as other venues, though you would still need to cough out some cash to catch a boat to get to the bay, which could cost a little extra but not break the bank.
UNDERWHELMING NIGERIAN MOVIES OF 2024
While Nollywood has made giant strides in storytelling and production, especially over the past few years, not every film has managed to hit the mark. In 2024, despite high hopes and anticipation, there were a few movies that failed to live up to expectations, leaving audiences disappointed and critics underwhelmed. It’s worth noting that these movies were released during a particularly competitive period, with several other high-profile films vying for attention. Nearly halfway through the year, here’s a look at five Nigerian movies that have fallen short so far:
1. ‘Japa’:
We really tried to enjoy this movie, understanding the effort that went into its creation, but unfortunately, it just didn’t resonate with us. Its attempt at creating a unique time loop narrative was quite laudable, but it wasn’t enough to save it from itself. What started as a unique sci-fi-ish plot quickly spiralled downwards into confusing predictability. Despite its promising premises, the movie’s second half was clogged with a disjointed plot and lacklustre resolution, failing to deliver on its potential. However, we must acknowledge the commendable performances that, despite being overshadowed by the film’s latter shortcomings, were a testament to the talent involved in its making.
2. ‘Postcards’:
Hamisha Daryani’s second attempt at a Nollywood-Bollywood crossover didn’t exactly go how we thought it would. Filled with multiple and mostly unnecessary subplots, cringeworthy dialogues, unnecessary characters and a weak attempt to connect all the characters, ‘Postcards’ is considerably less palatable than its predecessor, ‘Namaste Wahala’. Despite filling up with big names, it failed to leave a lasting impression and was quickly forgotten amidst the sea of more compelling movies.
3. ‘Water and Garri’ It might not be a far reach to ask Ms Tiwa to hold a press conference or an IG live at least to explain the plot of her latest venture, ‘Water and Garri.’
A captivating title meets a boring plot and even more boring acting.
Water and Garri offers nothing but good cinematography and locations.
Not only was the film’s pacing sluggish, but its
attempts at building suspense felt forced and contrived. It is a movie you want to forget as soon you finish watching, and that is if you can get through it.
We love Tiwa Savage any day, but maybe we need a little more background producing and much, much less acting and writing.
4. It Blooms in June: Despite its promising plot and eye-catching title, the movie failed to impress audiences due to its shallow characterisations and lack of emotional depth. The pacing was slow, especially at the beginning, which made it difficult to stay engaged. This, combined with the lack of emotional depth, left many viewers feeling disconnected from the story and its characters.
