6 WAYS TO PULL OFF A PATCH WORK DENIMS PG 20

Most of us believed because of the significance of 2020, many good tidings will come our way. We were filled with excitement and renewed vigor and prepared to embrace life to the fullest! But alas, it has not been so. This plague that has befallen us has left us bewildered, filled us with anxiety and question our mortality. What is just as painful also, are the lives lost not just to the plague but to one ailment or the other making it a double dose of death calls. I personally, know at least 10 people who have passed that their deaths have nothing to do with Covid 19. And we are only in the second half of 2020! One of those who have been called to glory is the late Ibidunni Ighodalo who would have been 40 years old today. They say life starts at 40 but sadly, Ibidunni did not her chance before the cold hands of death snatched her away suddenly! Who would have thought that her shining star would be cut so short? Ibidunni was loved by many, so much so that her departure was felt by the pulse of the nation. Today, we celebrate her 40th birthday posthumously as we relive her

short span on earth. One thing these unfortunate scenarios has taught us yet again, is to appreciate the lives we live today. We might not be where we want to be, we might not have achieved what we want to achieve, we might not be as happy as we would like to be, in fact sometimes, we might feel like throwing in the towel as life throws different curveballs at us, but each day we wake up to see one more morning, one more day, in good health, we should always be thankful that we got to do so. In Get That Glow Up, the journey to living your best life, we talk about the little pleasures that make life worth living. A happy state of mind is not given to us, we have to work to be in that place. Life is too short to take so seriously. There is no need to shoulder burdens that make you unhappy. Happiness is what you decide to make of it. You might not have all you desire but you have what God has blessed you with...LIFE! Seize the moment and make the most of it regardless of your circumstance. Stay safe. FASHION DIRECTOR/EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Cross bodyBAG TREND

STELLA ADEWUNMI

The crossbody bag trend isn’t going anywhere for now, and it’s probably because they are such a fun and versatile accessory. They can be paired with virtually any outfit and there is an endless array of styles to choose from. Semi-formal Look with heels

This is such a great look for heading out for meetings or lunch with friends! With this ensemble, go bold with a pair of ripped jeans and a blazer. Match your crossbody bag with your heels. We love an outfit that effortlessly blends style with elegance and comfort with class. This look does all that and more!

TIPS TO TAKE NOTE • The size of your crossbody bags mainly depends on your needs and how much stuff you want to carry around. If you’re someone who can survive the day with just a phone and a lip gloss in your purse then a mini crossbody bag is perfect for you. And if you’re someone who wants every possible thing you might need in a day to be in your reach then an oversized crossbody in leather would be best. • If you’re an eco-conscious shopper, then you would want to invest in a good quality crossbody bags that can last for a long time, so go for durable and long-lasting materials that age well. Avoid cheap, fast-fashion alternatives because even though they might look cute, they’ll not last very long.

CHIC AMA

The Easiest Style

Everyone isn’t comfortable with letting a crossbody go across your body, and many women find it tiring to wear it this way. So, here’s the most straightforward and perhaps the most convenient way to wear crossbody bags, just letting them hang by your side. And of course, we love how the bag has been matched with her shoes.

• When it comes to wearing a crossbody, there are no rules so go with the flow and choose what works best for you. Let it hang behind your body or at the front, and you can even convert it into a fanny pack so go crazy and make the most of your bag by wearing it in every possible way.

CAPSULES BY FUNKE BABS-KUFEJI

The sons of Issachar pondered understood the signs of the times, knowledge is one thing, understanding is another......they knew the Master was up to something, and as usual people decided to play deaf and dumb because it did not align with their plans. Today the signs are lining up behind each other forming a pathway to heaven indicative of the times and God’s voice quietly speaking to his own, but still, we ignore. The storms are gathering and the firmament raging but alas, confusion is clouding the judgement of the innocuous as fear pervades the realm, .....”if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do” l honestly wonder as everything senselessly trudges on without a viable plan. “When I see the blood, I will pass over” he said, but what are the conditions precedent to the drawdown of mercy and grace, is it free, if so, why are people being yanked off unprepared, are the doors of our homes truly marked thus unassailable? How do we uproot mountains with our mustard seed faith and win when many have fought with boulders and lost. Is grace and mercy available to all, many continue to question. The same God, the same prayer, different results. I know the world is swimming in sewage undoubtedly but the word said though your sin be as red as scarlet, they will be as white as snow because of the intervention of the Master. The world is asking us today if our God is on siesta, a few “friends of job” attempt to hold brief for God and explain why 2+2=5 but seriously many of their arguments are dead on arrival for obvious reasons. Are we to resign ourselves to these bombardments.....what happened to conquering, what happened to victory. We are children of the Man of war, how can we then shiver before ants. These signs are obviously a precursor to something, what is the Potter saying to the clay. The ground is swallowing many dreams as life is daily snuffed from daring souls and no reason is adduced beyond the fact that we live in a fallen world, can someone please tell me what happened to grace and mercy, exhausted and drained we limp on. The whole world feels like insanity on wheels, how does any pilgrim progress on this bumpy road filled with despair and frustration. We daily faced with the disappointment of dashed hopes, the pain of unanswered prayers and our hearts continue to bleed out. Hmmmm, when I see the blood, I will pass over, why is the angel of death out and about in the first place, is it something we did? Is it because many are romancing inanity and have divorced common sense thus bent on marrying foolishness? We know earth is not home, but is earth supposed to be hell for the righteous too? If so, can someone explain the point to it all. Fear holds many captive like a jealous lover unwilling to let go. What a scary world, who is next we mutter to ourselves in afraid. Then that voice, that still quiet voice of the Master breaks through.....trust me, trust me beautiful soul, I love you and I will never leave you forsaken, trust me even when everything else is telling you not to. Trust is the ability to believe despite conflicting evidence. Does trusting someone we love as we do God make us look foolish especially when everything is falling apart ? God does not operate with the limitations of our thoughts, so it is wiser to trust him. He is the only light that can lead us through this darkness, I will rather trust him than wander around like a drunk. If we decide not to lean on God through this madness, we will lose our minds. He is our only protector and protection through life’s onslaught.

Colours of Life with Koko Kalango

THE EMPEROR IS NAKED! Hans Christian Andersen weaves a fascinating tale in his timeless classic: The Emperor’s New Clothes and leaves the reader with invaluable lessons of life. This is how it goes… There was once a vain Emperor who spent all his time dressing up in fancy clothes and parading around his empire to the admiration of his subjects. One day, two rogues came up with a great idea of how to enrich themselves by taking advantage of the vanity of the Emperor. The rogues pretended to be Weavers. They boasted of their ability to weave the most wonderful cloth in the world. “But” they warned “the cloth could not be seen by anyone who is stupid or unfit for his office”. The impostors ensured that the Emperor got to hear of their incredible cloth. “I must have some clothes made from this cloth,” thought the Emperor. “When I wear them, I shall find out what men in my empire are not fit for their positions. I shall know the clever men from the dunces. Those Weavers must be brought to me at once.” Both men came before the Emperor and he commissioned them to make him the special outfit for a most prestigious parade he had planned. They were given a great amount of money to begin the job. The tricksters set up two great looms and pretended to be working. They called for the finest silks and the brightest gold (which they kept for themselves). Day after day, these men seemingly worked at the looms far into the night. Everyday the emperor would hear the rattling of their instruments and he would believe that the men were being productive. One day the Emperor decided to send people to ensure that the work was in progress. Remembering that no one who was stupid or unfit for his office could see the cloth, the Emperor made up his mind to send his most trusted ministers to check on the Weavers. One after the other they went. When each person arrived at the workshop, they observed the Weavers seemingly at work and yet they did not see any cloth on the loom. But, when they remembered that it was those who were either stupid or unfit for duty that could not see the cloth, each of the emissaries pretended to see the invisible cloth and they all gave glowing reports to the Emperor. Soon the news of the two Weavers and their wonderful work spread around the town. Meanwhile, the rascals continued to demand for silk and gold. At a point the emperor thought he must see the work himself. So, accompanied by a number of his courtiers, he made for the Weaver’s workshop. On arriving at the place where the cloth was being woven, the Emperor did not see any cloth on the loom. But, not wanting to be considered a dunce by his escorts, the Emperor pretended to see a beautiful coat as he stared at the empty looms. The Weavers then prevailed upon the Emperor to wear his new attire and show it off in a great procession that was about to take place. The emperor agreed. As a reward for what he perceived as their ingenuity, the Emperor gave each of the rogues a royal badge to wear and called them the Imperial Court Weavers. So, in the presence of his grandest courtiers and with the help of the Weavers, the Emperor went in to put on his new garment. First he had to take off the clothes he was wearing. The rogues then pretended to help the Emperor put on the new one. They wrapped him about, they buttoned and they tied.

“How well his Majesty looks in his new suit!” said his courtiers. “What a becoming style! What beautiful colors!” The Emperor turned round and round before the mirror, and looked and looked, and nodded his head. He then stepped out into the procession in full view of the crowd, who had gathered to see his new coat. Behind him was his train of officers, all gorgeously attired. “How handsome the Emperor’s clothes are!” they all cried. “What a perfect fit! What marvelous colors!” The Emperor had never been admired so much. Everyone was afraid to say they could not see anything lest they be considered stupid and unfit for office. This charade went on and on. Just when it seemed like the lie would never end, the voice of a little child broke through the bustling crowd; “BUT HE HAS NOTHING ON!” “Hush! Hush!” said the child’s father. But the voice of innocence would not be silenced so easily. “BUT HE HAS NOTHING ON!” the child insisted. Soon people began to whisper to one another what the child had said; “He has nothing on! A child says he has nothing on!” Before long all the people were saying aloud, “But, he has nothing on!” The Emperor heard what they said, and he shivered, for he knew that their words were true. But it would never do to stop the procession; and so he held himself stiffer than ever. And behind him his officers carried the invisible train. In every one of us exists a bit of each character in this theatre – the vain emperor, his subjects, the rogue weavers, the trusted ministers, the emperor’s courtiers, the crowd, the train of officers, The little child the child’s father. Each is important and valuable when managed with wisdom and integrity. The vain emperor in us needs to come to terms with the fact that though he is important and successful, life does not revolve around him. This fact must come across clearly to the emperor’s subjects who, by the way, need to get a life. We need to put the weavers in us to good use. They would help us ‘think and grow rich’, work smart rather than just work hard. The trusted ministers in us have a position of privilege, and ought to be secure in their ability. We must not join the conspiracy of silence but give our principal feedback for their good and the overall good of society. The courtiers in us should step in to save the day where the trusted ministers fail. They have the unique opportunity to be present with the emperor and the weavers and could resolve rather than compound things by their response. The crowd in us has the strength of numbers, we can take advantage of mass movement to sway things in the right direction. The train of officers in us should not be comfortable in our beautiful attires when we cannot see the Emperor’s coat. We should be honest to ourselves and not pretend to be carrying a coat that is not visible. Thank God for the little child in us all that saves the day and we must prevent the little child’s father in us from shutting the child us. We need to let the little child speak; theirs is the voice of innocence, the cry of conscience, the word of truth shouting out that THE EMPEROR IS NAKED! ‘You will know the truth and the truth will set you free’ John 8:32 Koko Kalango is author Colours of Life devotional and host, Colours of Life show. contact@coloursoflife.org

His dexterity for the profession is also shown through his skill and expertise in every branch of Law as his numerous contributions to the profession far surpasses those of specialized Lawyers. He is a phenomenal Lawyer of international repute and a leading authority in Constitutional and Electoral Law. Amongst his many notable strides and achievements, Azinge has published no less than 70 publications with his in-depth research projects. His publications in their quality and content attest to the quality of his active legal mind. He has also been conferred with over 26 fellowships throughout his tenure not to mention his establishment of the NAILS Hall of Fame for individuals that have made monumental contributions in the field of Law. He is also very passionate about immortalizing great scholars of our time and has named research centers and structures within the institute after prominent Nigerians and great personalities. Azinge is also the founder of several foundations, the most prominent being the Epiphany Azinge Foundation. This Professor’s long list of attributes and success display his complete dedication to his chosen field and above all, his well earned position as one of Nigeria’s most prominent Lawyers. He is no doubt an example of the highest integrity in a profession where such trait is the core of its existence. Who played the most pivotal role in your life whilst growing up. Parents are the first and most influential agents of socialization in any home and my parents were not found wanting in that regard. I imbibed all the values from them while they also inculcated in me basic human ideals and acceptable societal norms. What do you miss most about your childhood days that is missing in today’s generation. Family bonding that culminates in closely knit families. Childhood friendships that endures for all season and interpersonal skills that flows from cultivated camaraderie. Some of these are totally absent as social media seems to have offered an alternative outlet.

How long have you been married to your wife and what traits do you find most endearing about her. My wife is caring, virtuous, industrious, a home builder, exceptionally brilliant and very religious. She is an embodiment of all that is good in a wife. We have been married for 34 years now. Yours is family is a family of Lawyers we hear? This is factually correct. Apart from my wife and I, three out of our four children are also Lawyers. This is as it relates to my nuclear family. In the extended Azinge family however, we have presently about 40 Lawyers. You currently hold an elected position at the Commonwealth Arbitral Tribunal representing Nigeria and Africa as a whole. What impact has this had on our nation? Firstly, is that it is a major diplomatic accomplishment which helps to project Nigeria not only as a power bock in Africa but within the Commonwealth family. Secondly, it earns for Nigeria, the respect of the international community that we have candidates with impressive credentials to hold his own among the equally outstanding personalities from other divides within the Commonwealth. I have just been re-elected for another four years and is presently, the longest serving member of the Tribunal. Dealing with issues pertaining to International public service is not common in our legal literature. For me, it is a fresh challenge that is intellectually stimulating and an

experience I will be glad to share with colleagues and younger generation of Nigeria’s Lawyers. You came up with a motto “Knowledge that makes the difference “. Can you dwell on this further? The idea for the motto was conceptualized as soon as I became the Director General of Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in 2009. Given the statutory mandate of the Institute, I reasoned that we must be more pragmatic and result-oriented in our research strategy. Gone are the days that researches are conducted without pushing to implement the findings of the research. More importantly, I imagined that the knowledge at our disposal can set the tone for policy formulation and implementation, thereby making the Institute the foremost legal think-tank of Nigeria. I am happy to state that we pursued this religiously under my watch and my successors have continued along the same path. Can you tell us some of the countless innovations you made as the past DG of the Institute? I feel really humbled that on your own accord you referred to the innovations as countless. Honestly we worked tirelessly as a team to push frontiers and make the Institute a World class institution comparable to any other in the world. In some instances, we far exceeded our expectations. Is it in establishing admitting World

renowned Jurists in our Hall of Fame; inviting Jurists that have shaped legal thoughts to speak to and engage with Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, initiating the Diaspora Scholar lectures that enabled outstanding Nigeria legal scholars abroad to come home and share their thoughts, or the Establishment of Journal of Supreme Court Review that enables Scholars and practitioners to review judgements of Supreme Court and draw their attention to areas of misgivings and reservations. The journal was circulated to all Justices of Supreme Court. With the Support of the former President of the Federation, we successfully invited the President of Uganda to deliver our convocation lectures, shortly after, former President Jonathan delivered a keynote address to commemorate the Centinary celebration by our Institute. I can go on and on. You also provided excellent research centers named after prominent Nigerians who have demonstrated interest and commitment in the subject areas. Can you shed some more light on this? Truly they were a host of those centers and tied to the areas of specialization of the named honorees. Some was named posthumously too. We had a center named after late Justce Chike Idigbe in the area of public Law; Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN; Dr Olisa Agbakoba SAN; George Etomi center for Commercial Law; Gani Fawehinmi center for Human Rights, Justice Augustine Nnamani center for Criminal Justice; Mohammed Lawal Uwais center for Law and procedure; Jadesola Akande center for Women Rights; Hon Justice Babalakin center for Judicial reforms and Akinola Aguda center for legislative drafting. What major publications did you publish throughout your administration and what field researches did you pioneer? Again this is countless. We produced leading works on Rule of Law; Justiciability and Constitutionalism; Law and Development; Disabilit Rights, Plea Bargaining, Competition Law; Legal Pluralism in Africa; Case annotation on Electoral Law, Evidence, Company Law, freedom of Protest, Cabotage law, legal regime of free trade zone; Legal empiricism and writing Skills; Deregulation and Economic Analysis; Freedom of Information law and regulation; Fundamentals

of legislative Drafting; The Supreme Court of Nigeria:1990-2012; Law of Domestic Violence; Drafting of Legislation; Constitutional reforms; Rules of Engagement for Military Operations etc . In similar fashion, we conducted and completed many field researches. Top on the list is the Restatement of Customary Law in Nigeria; Public financing of election expenditures; Legislations in Force in Nigeria: Relevance and usage etc. What service award did you collaborate with NTA and what is the purpose of such award? That was the Mohhammed Lawal Uwais Public Service Award. Both public institutions constituted a committee charged with the responsibility of receiving nominations from the public on public officers adjudged to have gone the extra mile in their service to the country. At the end of the annual exercise, the best candidate goes home with a plaque and an incentive of N1M. We named the award after Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, who in his own right, was an outstanding public servant and therefore, a role model for all public servants. Can you tell us about the NIALS Festival of Legal Scholarship? The theme Festival of Legal scholarship is as inviting as it is confusing. But truly it was a festival in its own right as the Institute assembled an array of 5-Star legal Scholars from all over the world to treat congregation of legal Scholars to series of intellectual feasts. For seven days, it was set after set, analyzing issues of contemporary importance. We had lectures, seminars, round table discussions, colloquiums, group discussions, etc. It was an unprecedented one week of serous intellectual engagement and many found the idea novel and the exercise must enriching. Let’s talk about your pro bono clinic, the Medicare Foundation you founded and of course your Epiphany Azinge Foundation. With the array of personnel available at the Institute, we felt that free legal services is something we can engage with. Given the quality of our Lawyers, there is no aspect of law we cannot conveniently interrogate. It never stopped with offering legal advice or opinions. In some instances, it extended to actual representation in court. The Medicare foundation was an idea I conceptualized basically to assist accident victims on the highway. This culminated in purchase of two state of the art Ambulances for this purpose. This was long before the Road safety commission introduced their Ambulances. Epiphany Azinge Foundation is also another initiative of mine with wider objectives. To mark my 40th anniversary of my Call to bar, the foundation will institutionalize some initiatives especially setting up a Fellowship for the foundation as well as kickstarting the Foundation’s Essay competition for all public secondary schools in Delta State. How did it feel when you were admitted into the Hall of Fame of the Human Rights Association? I was elated but humbled when l was admitted into the Hall of Fame of the Human Rights Assosiation. Grateful that my little contributions have been appreciated and that my efforts have not gone unnoticed. One is always motivated to do more. pleasure? Interestingly I am comfortable with all good music. Yes I founded a choral group and a cultural dance troupe to encourage the staff to relax and hone other skills apart from their normal engagement. Personally, I sing and try my hands on few musical instruments. I have full musical instruments at home and every Sunday, I engage in Praise and Worship with family and few friends. This is usually in the evening after church service. Your most interesting project to date is your lawsuit against China on how they initially and intentionally downplayed the effect/ presence of the Corona virus in their midst and its potential danger to the detriment of the world at large. What legal steps are involved in this suit and what has been China’s response to it? Also, how feasible is this suit and if it does happen, how long do you foresee a trial like this going on.. We have now filed our action after intensive and intellectually stimulating engagement by our team of lawyers made of Senior Advocates of Nigeria and leading International Law Scholars both locally and abroad. From your question, you have brilliantly wrapped your head around the thrust of our action. Interestingly, this is the first time in Nigeria that another Sovereign Nation will be sued in our domestic court. Concerning the role they played with the Corona virus issue, we have filed a class action at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory seeking damages to the tune of $200B from China. China though visibly aware of our case, has been evasive. Our demand notice couriered to China was refused delivery. So also, the documents sent to the Chinese Embassy in Abuja. We are not deterred by the antics of the Chinese government and Institutions. We are very optimistic about the outcome of our action considering the degree of our research and information at our disposal. I cannot predict how long this matter will stretch, but we are give it our best shot. If Nigeria does win its case against China, at the end of the day, what will be done with the proceeds from the damages? We will simply turn it over to Government after deducting cost of litigation and fees for Counsel. Nigeria and Nigerians have suffered so much because of this pandemic. This action is on behalf of all Nigerians. Is Nigeria the only country that has taken this step and if so, what other countries have followed suit and if not, do you feel this lawsuit will other countries to do the same? Many states in the USA earlier hinted that they

COVER

will bring action against China but nothing has been heard so far about them. In Africa, some Lawyers in Egypt gave notice of going to court against China but nothing has been heard of them again too. No doubt, our determination and perseverance to get to the stage we are now, will motivate other countries to push on with their case. The legal Profession was once regarded as the most respected profession but over the years, this perception has somewhat changed because of one scandal or the other, a case in hand being the suspension of Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Hon Justice Walter Onnoghen - just three weeks before the general election where he was charged for allegedly failing to declare his personal assets before taking office in 2017. Some also believed it was a move in the chess game of politics. Why has politics infiltrated into the legal system and what can be done to endure this does not become a recurring decimal? For me, the legal profession still remains one of the most respected in Nigeria The Judiciary has battled with challenges in the last couple of years but not enough to change the narrative of its integrity and dignity. I am afraid I cannot comment professionally on the issue of politics in our legal system because there seem to be a lot of speculations and presumptions that leaves you squarely in the realms of conjecture. I still

Nigerians have also called for stiffer punishment as reported rape cases have increased with some of them leading to death of the victims especially with the less privileged in society? Why is rape not taken as seriously here as it is abroad with the punishment matching the severity of the crime? I consider the punishment prescribed for rape sufficiently stiff enough. Like it or not, LGBTQ movement has gained ground in international communities where they have fought hard for their rights and sexual preferences. But Homosexuality is frowned upon in Africa and the Far East. In Nigeria, it attracts a 14 year jail sentence. Can such laws be changed or adjusted as a sign of the times? Laws are very dynamic. They can with time. Society however, is more dynamic and Law plays catch up with the changing norms and values. The mood of Nigeria now is to criminalize what society considers deviant behavioral patterns. However, in another decade or two, things would have changed dramatically where what is presently frowned upon now will become acceptable. A lot depends on the degree of liberalism in a given society.

chances of getting sick increase with age. So, as far as I am concerned, it is a race against time to lose the remaining fat that is clinging to my body as soon as possible. BATTLE OF THE BULGE - PART 16 (WEEK 18) Recap and vital statistics: I am 5 feet and 10 inches tall and 60 years old. I was super-slim till about 10 years ago, then gradually got fat. I started this weight loss programme on March 16th when I weighed a whopping 120kg and measured 4947-51 (chest-waist-hips) inches. By last Sunday, my weight had dropped to 107.5kg. It is now 106kg. And I still look fat, but my vital statistics are gradually dwindling while my wardrobe choices have expanded. Most women who have gained a lot of weight own clothes in several different sizes. In my case, the dimensions range from the British size 12 I was a decade ago to the British size 22 I was 4 months ago. Voluminous boubous are the most flexible outfits, in the sense that you can wear the same boubou until your weight has significantly increased. In other words, a woman who started off as a size 12 can usually fit into the same old boubou until she is a size 16. Trousers meanwhile are the least flexible, in the sense that you only need to put on a few ounces to render a pair of trousers completely unwearable. Anyway, I’m dusting down a whole bunch of clothes of all descriptions that haven’t seen the light of day for 5 years. And it’s so nice to now be able to squeeze into size 18 trousers…and to look less hideously tent-like in kaftans and boubous. Medics are always banging on about the numerous health benefits of weight loss, but many dieters like this

that incidents of rape can only be reduced by death penalty. What is crucial is strategic investigation mechanism that can ground an action for rape. Also needed is systematic sensitization that helps victims to preserve relevant evidence for prosecution. I need to note however, that when rape results in death of a victim, the punishment is bound to be different. It is not correct to state that the offense of rape is not taken as seriously as it is abroad. The challenge in Nigeria is undue stigmatization that makes many victims not to report to parents or Law enforcement agencies. More reassuring is that the level of awareness has changed and victims are now less conservative on issues of rape.

columnist are more driven by vanity and a desire to be as fashionably slim and chic as possible. Anyway, this encouraging downward trend on the weight front is not the only good news in my life at the moment. Last month, I occasionally experienced uncomfortable twinges in my left breast, so I made my way to Abuja’s National Hospital, with my heart thudding fearfully, to consult some excellent doctors I know. They told me that sporadic breast pain is not necessarily a worrying symptom, but said that they’d like to run some tests. So I had a mammogram, which revealed the existence of a small lump. Then I had an ultrasound scan, followed by an aspiration procedure (whereby a needle is stuck into the lump so a sample can be withdrawn for analysis by the histopathology department). Fortunately, the lump turned out to be benign; and I cannot thank the 3 doctors involved enough. I wish I could name them here because they deserve applause. But they are government doctors and they don’t seek publicity or need to be associated with a mouthy journalist who often makes anti-government comments! Anyway, Nigerian hospitals are frequently criticised, but I have been very impressed by the quality of care I received at the National. I experienced enormous relief when I got the all-clear and feel that I had a very lucky escape because one is more likely to get breast cancer - and many other potentially fatal ailments - if one is overweight. And the

Hello Donu. Your articles on Battle of the Bulge are so encouraging. It isn’t easy putting it out there. I am a 59 year old woman and have been struggling to lose weight with no luck for many years. I was really slim until I started having kids. To be very honest my weight didn’t bother me until a few years ago when l started panting each time l took the stairs. I currently weigh 95kg and know exactly what to do to lose weight, but the stress of living has taken a toll on my mindset. Some of us need to have our brains reset to lose weight. The other day l made up my mind that l wasn’t going to dwell on my weight any more. I recently and reluctantly too, started taking walks in my estate. I have never liked exercising. It’s even worse with age. Maybe as l keep reading your progress it will spur me on. It isn’t easy but l will keep trying. All the best and God bless you. Emails like this really cheer me up. I appreciate it when people contact me to share their despair or victories around weight loss. I can deeply identify with their struggles with discipline and their elation when they triumph over their weakness for food and drink or get off their backsides and confront exercise challenges. I answer every email personally and hope that I can spur Evelyn and other on to achieve results that will make them smile. My knees are less painful now than they were when I was heavier; and I’m told that they will continue to become stronger and stronger as more and more fat melts off my overburdened frame. I cannot wait for this to happen because, trust me dear Readers, chair cardio is SO boring compared to going for a brisk walk in an attractive area or doing vigorous aerobic class moves or dancing like a delighted dervish to great golden oldies from my 1970s heydey. Why Hermès

bags Birkin

are so expensive

Herms Birkin bags are the most expensive bags in the world , ranging from $40,000 to $500,000 for a single bag. Named after actress and singer Jane Birkin, the iconic bag is handcrafted and strictly exclusive, which drives the value of the Birkin year after year. A 2017 study revealed that the value of Hermes Birkin bags has increased 500% in the last 35 years, an increase of 14% per year. Most recently, professional sports betting consultant, David “ Vegas Dave “ Oancea bought a Himalaya Birkin 35 for $500,000. Hermes Birkin 30cm Himalayan Crocodile with Diamond Encrusted Hardware going at $1,000,000 is a most rare offering of the highly collective Himalayan collection produced by Hermes, Absolutely breathtaking and spectacular Following is a transcript of the video posted by Business Insider, Victoria Beckham reportedly has a collection of over 100 Birkins, estimated to be worth over $2 million, and Singaporean socialite and entrepreneur Jamie Chua is considered to have the world’s largest Birkin collection with over 200 bags. But you can’t just walk into Herms and get one. While there used to be a wait list, nowadays all you can do is hope to be important enough or spend enough to be offered a Birkin bag. And if you’re offered one, don’t expect to be able to choose the colour or size. Hermes also places limits on how many Birkin bags a client can purchase per year. This dedication to preserving the exclusivity of the bag has certainly paid off, and the disparity in demand and access has created a thriving resale market. A 2017 study revealed that the value of Herms Birkin bags has increased 500% in the last 35 years, an increase of 14% per year. One of the most coveted models comes from Hermes the Himalaya collection, which comes in three sizes. Often referred to as the holy grail of handbags, the white Himalaya Birkin bag features 18-karat white gold hardware and more than 200 diamonds. The 35-centimeter model in particular is very rare and has sold at record prices year after year. Most recently in 2019, it sold for over half a million dollars. Professional sports betting consultant David Oancea, also known as Vegas Dave, made the record-breaking purchase and he says “The reason I bought the Birkin bag is I love breaking records. I broke all the sports betting records, I wanted to break the most-expensive-bag record. I’m all about raising the bar. Also, it’s about supply and demand. The only other one in the world is by Steve Harvey’s wife, so there’s only two in the world. Not even Kim Kardashian has this, so I actually bought it

with a plain T-shirt or a patterned crisp shirt with a pair of wide-leg trousers to the office – this way you get the full impact of wearing something bold without looking like you’ve tried too hard. Subtle pairings are also key here. While the allover print look is undoubtedly a showstopper, it should be approached with caution, if at all. Instead, wear your prints with neutral colours to make them feel less intimidating. Or, if you feel like making more of a statement, pick out a colour from your print and carry it through elsewhere in your ensemble. Alternatively, accessories are a subtle way to include pattern in your wardrobe. From shoes to bags, belts and neckerchiefs, a small dose of print will instantly make your look more interesting.

The record-breaking sale actually took place over social media and Oancea says “Sale was pretty easy. I posted on social media, I have about a million followers, that I’m looking for a bag. This lady hit me up, Priv Porter. She messaged me; said she’d get me the bag. I realized it was the most expensive bag. She said it would break the record. I actually do use the bag. Most people think I’m crazy. They put it away like in a safe, and they never touch it again. I’ve taken it out twice, once to a night club in Vegas as a great piece of content. It’s definitely worth the cost because you could offer me a million dollars cash, and I wouldn’t sell it. My asking price is $2 million. If not, I’ll just keep the bag”. The said bag is also made with white or albino crocodile skin, which is extremely rare. The costly skin is painstakingly dyed to emulate the snowy appearance of HERMES BIRKIN 35CM VERT D’EAU the Himalayan mountains. MATTE ALLIGATOR WITH SILVER Mason Howell says; The high retail value and resale HARDWARE value is because these are pieces of artwork. These $343.50k artisans train years and years to make one of these bags, and they may even train 10 years before even they’re allowed to make a Birkin. Despite its popularity, the bag features no prominent logos and is only recognizable to people who already know what it is. In Birkin, Hermes has created something that feels inaccessible unless highly exclusive. As for whether the Birkin will always be so expensive, only time will tell.

STYLE & DESIGN

Every now and then a trend comes along that gives you a pause, leaving you slightly confused as to how it should be worn. The latest is the Patchwork denim. Patch work is something which can totally enhance your style statement more than any other embellishment. Giving a little colour to your jeans, it adds more style and charm to your apparel and also one of the coolest and most fun denim trends. They tend to have a boho, casual vibe to them, but they’re actually more versatile than they seem. Here are six different ways to pull off this look.

The dress and sneakers has now become somewhat of a classic and trendy all in one. More and more, fashionistas are embracing this edgy look. Exchanging heels for the comfort of the good old sneakers has become a major staple in every woman’s wardrobe. Kika with the ‘ good hair’, has this look on point and if you ever want to try out this combo, be inspired by her but also add your own little spin on the trend!

It’s the kind of advice your mother might offer, but if you’ve invested money and thought in your clothing, look after it. Also establish a simple, but no less solid, grooming regime, brush your hair and cut your nails. EFE TOMMY ADABAMU

PARRA X AIR MAX 1 SNEAKER

Quality shoes are the kind of investment that should last 15 years or more. Opt for classic styles such as brogues, loafers and any other style that won’t go out of fashion. EBUKA

WEAR A SUIT WELL DRESS FOR THE SETTING

Style is not merely about self-expression; Think of clothes as being codes: you need the right combination to work with the setting you’re in – and that’s whether it’s a formal dinner or a Sunday in the pub. IGEE OKAFOR

The key to a suit looking good is fit. Also, classic is best and most useful – dark, two-button, single-breasted, moderate in details. “It’s not boring. A suit is a uniform. The idea is to think of this suit as a canvas to build different ideas of individuality around. It’s the way you wear it, not the label inside, that impresses. JOSIAH

Whatever you’re wearing, you have to own it. Genuine style icons are those who go their own way with a selfconfidence that comes from their clothes being like second skin, not a costume. TEMISAN EMMANUEL

moment? This will help you to become more aware of yourself, your actions, and your feelings. It will also help you to make small changes to be and feel like a newer version of yourself.

5. Switch Up Your Routine Your life has become so systematized you don’t even need to think about it anymore. That’s when life has become boring and monotonous; you feel unmotivated. Take a look at your life and see what can be eliminated, changed, or added to help you reinvent yourself.

6. Make Yourself Uncomfortable People get stuck when they become too comfortable with their lives. We are meant to challenge ourselves! So, try to do something each day that takes you slightly outside your comfort zone. Whatever it is, challenge yourself in some small way. You’ll find that you’ll start to feel more confident and that new opportunities will start to appear.

7. Reinvent Yourself – Get Up and Move

Get that

glowup The journey to living your best life.

Being and feeling stuck in life is an awful place to be. When you are stuck, it feels as though you are literally just spinning your wheels in the mud and are running around in circles. It also feels as though no matter what you do or say, nothing will ever change for the better and you’ll be stuck in a rut forever. If you’re not careful, being stuck in life can magnify the fear, guilt, shame and/or apathy you’re already feeling. You can become even more stuck than you already are. So rather than doing nothing and allowing yourself to get sucked into a really terrible rabbit hole, let’s explore 10 ways to reinvent yourself so you begin the journey to living your best life ever.

1. Focus on the Good Focusing on what is going well will help you take your mind off what isn’t going so well and will also allow you to get yourself out of your rut quickly. What you focus on magnifies. So, you might as well focus on the good stuff.

2. Change Your Diet Even if you aren’t overweight, incorporating healthier choices into your diet will only have positive results. Not only might you lose a few pounds but eating more healthy options will make you healthier and over time happier, making it easier for you to naturally reinvent yourself to become a healthier, happier, and better version of you from the inside out.

3. Clear Out Physical Clutter Get rid of anything that you no longer like, use or need. Clutter is just stuff that isn’t the best of you so why keep it around? To complicate your life any longer than you have to?

22

Move something – whether it’s your body, mind and/ or spirit, get something moving because you cannot resolve your issues with the same energy you created them with. Be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. To get your mind moving, try reading a book or taking a new course. Get your body moving and the blood pumping exercising. Whether you choose to move a little or a lot, moving anything will start to help you get unstuck and on your way to reinventing the way you show up in your own life.

8. Express Yourself Paint. Do yoga. Sing. Play an instrument. Write a short story. It doesn’t matter just get creative and express yourself in some way. This is a great method to try when reinventing yourself because creativity is just the truth of who you are coming out. It’s safe and healthy and can be a wonderful new avenue for you to explore. Whether you do it for money or just the plain joy of being creative, we are all creative beings and we all thrive better when we express ourselves in some way.

9. Take It Slow

When we get stuck, we really want to become unstuck as quickly as possible. What we don’t realize is that sometimes, we get stuck for a reason. When we take the time to look at our lives and how we feel about what’s currently going on, it gives us the ability to make small changes that can often have huge, lasting results.
