May Things Not Fall Apart

What a whirlwind of a week it has been!

The frustration and tension among Nigerians have been palpable, and many of us saw the August 1 protest coming despite the fervent counter-rallies trying to stifle the movement. What we didn’t anticipate was the level of violence and the tragic loss of lives that followed. No one should die while exercising their right to demand a better life. It is a heartbreaking situation. Rest in peace to all the lives lost. May your sacrifices not be in vain, and may we eventually witness the Nigeria of our dreams.

HOUSE OF GA’A PREMIERS AT TERRA KULTURE

The highly anticipated premiere of the movie “House of Gaa” was recently held at the Terra Kulture Art and cultural center in Victoria island. The premier captured the attention of both film enthusiasts and celebrity watchers alike. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and produced by Bolanle Austen Peter and Joseph Umoibom for Netflix, the release of movie marked a significant milestone in the Nigerian film industry for it thought-provoking and well-crafted piece of cinema. The movie showcased the talent and creativity of Nigerian filmmakers and set new standard for storytelling and representation in Nigerian cinema, paving the way for more diverse and authentic narratives to be shared with audiences worldwide. As the curtains closed on the premiere of “House of Gaa” at Terra Kulture, the echoes of applause and excitement linger in the air, marking a significant moment in Nigerian cinema. From the dazzling red carpet moments to the heartfelt reactions of audiences, the event left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate to be a part of it. As the film continues to spark conversations and captivate audiences, its legacy within the industry is sure to endure, solidifying its place as a standout contribution to the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian filmmaking.

For a considerable time now, Nigerians have been grappling with unprecedented economic hardships. Food inflation stands at a staggering 40 per cent, the highest in nearly three decades, while unemployment rates continue to rise. These statistics reflect the dire reality of daily life for millions of Nigerians. The protests on August 1 were not just a wake-up call, but a loud and urgent cry for help: life is difficult, hear us, save us. It is high time that the government steps up and addresses these pressing issues. The pervasive sentiment among Nigerians is that the government is disconnected from the harsh realities faced by the common man and shows little empathy, as evidenced by the lack of significant changes to tackle the growing challenges. Mr. President, we voted you in because we believed in your promises and vision for a better Nigeria. Please listen to the people’s voices and take decisive action to bring about the much-needed change.

Adding to the sorrow of this week, we lost one of our greatest voices, Onyeka Onwenu. A singer and activist, Onyeka’s life was a testament to following one’s passion and making a difference. Her contributions went beyond her melodious voice; she stood for justice and worked tirelessly to uplift others. Onyeka did good, and the profound mourning that followed her passing is proof of the impact she had on so many lives. Rest in peace, the elegant stallion. Your legacy will continue to inspire us all.

As we go through these challenging times, it is essential to remember that rebuilding Nigeria is a collective effort. We must all do our part in assisting the government and working towards a brighter future. Nigeria belongs to each and every one of us, and together, we have the power to make her great again.

How are you doing? In times like these, it is crucial to check in on one another and offer support where we can. While the road ahead may be long and arduous, our unity and resilience will see us through.

Wishing you a great week ahead filled with hope and determination. Love,

DOES THE 3-MONTH RULE CHANGE ANYTHING?

When it comes to modern dating, everyone has their own set of rules. One of the most debated yet popular is the “3-month rule.” This rule suggests waiting three months before making any serious commitments in a new relationship. But does it really change anything, or is it just another dating myth?

The Origin of the 3-Month Rule

The 3-month rule, much like many dating norms, has murky origins. Some say it stems from the idea that it takes around 90 days to truly get to know someone beyond the initial infatuation. Others believe it’s a timeframe derived from pop culture and romantic comedies, where characters often undergo significant relationship milestones within this period. Regardless of its origin, the rule has been embraced by many as a guideline for navigating new relationships.

What Happens in Those First Three Months?

The first three months of a relationship are often called the “honeymoon phase.” This is when everything feels new and exciting, and both partners are usually on their best behaviour. You’re more likely to overlook minor annoyances, and the focus is on enjoying each other’s company.

During this period, people generally try to impress their partner. You’re both figuring out if there’s a real connection beyond physical attraction. This phase can be exhilarating but also misleading, as everyone tends to put their best foot forward.

Benefits of the 3-Month Rule

Clarity and Understanding: The 3-month rule provides a buffer to assess compatibility without the pressures of a serious commitment. It allows both individuals to observe each other’s true personalities, habits, and quirks that might not be immediately apparent.

False Security: Following the rule might give a false sense of security. Just because a relationship lasts three months doesn’t mean it’s destined for long-term success. True compatibility requires continuous effort and communication.

Say Goodbye to Dryness

YES, YOU NEED A BODY OIL:

HERE’S WHY YOUR SKIN WILL THANK YOU

What if I told you you could lock in that postshower freshness and make your skin feel even more incredible? Enter the hero of hydration— body oil.

Gone are the days when body oils were just something your ultra-luxurious, spa-going aunt used. Today, they’re a must-have for anyone serious about skincare, and here’s why you should reach for a bottle as soon as possible.

Building a Strong Foundation: Relationships built on a solid foundation of friendship and mutual respect tend to last longer. Three months can help establish this foundation before going into a deeper commitment.

Self-Reflection: This timeframe also allows for personal reflection. Are you genuinely interested in the person, or are you caught up in the excitement of a new romance? The three months give you time to differentiate between fleeting infatuation and a deeper connection.

The Downside of Waiting

However, not everyone agrees with the 3-month rule. Critics argue that:

Unnecessary Pressure The rule can create undue pressure to reach certain milestones by a specific timeframe. This pressure can lead to anxiety and unnecessary stress in the relationship.

Artificial Timelines: Every relationship is unique, and imposing a rigid timeline might not suit everyone. Some couples naturally progress faster, while others take more time to build a connection.

Missed Opportunities Waiting too long might lead to missed opportunities. If one person is ready to move forward while the other is sticking strictly to the 3-month rule, it can cause frustration and misunderstandings.

Avoiding Hasty Decisions: By taking things slowly, there’s less risk of making impulsive decisions that you might regret later. Rushing into a relationship can lead to overlooking red flags or ignoring potential deal-breakers.

Real-Life Perspectives

To understand the impact of the 3-month rule, we reached out to a few people who have navigated this timeframe in their relationships.

Nkem, 28: “I followed the three-month rule with my boyfriend, and it worked wonders. We took our time getting to know each other, and by the end of three months, we were both sure about our feelings. It helped us build a strong foundation.”

Kevin, 35: “I think the 3-month rule is overrated. My girlfriend and I hit it off right away, and we moved in together after just two months. We’ve been together for three years now. Sometimes, you just know.”

Emmy, 25: “I used to believe in the 3-month rule until I realized it was causing more stress than necessary. Now, I focus on open communication and mutual understanding rather than sticking to arbitrary timelines.”

So, Does It Change Anything?

The answer is both yes and no. The 3-month rule can provide valuable reflection and understanding time, helping avoid rash decisions and build a strong relationship foundation. However, it’s essential to remember that every relationship is unique, and rigid rules might not apply to everyone.

Ultimately, the success of a relationship depends on open communication, mutual respect, and genuine compatibility. Whether you choose to follow the 3-month rule or not, what matters most is that both partners are on the same page and willing to invest in each other.

Body lotions are great; don’t get me wrong. But when it comes to deeply nourishing dry, thirsty skin, oils are in a league of their own. Unlike lotions that can sometimes sit on the skin’s surface, oils have the knack for diving deeper. They mimic the natural lipids in your skin, repairing and hydrating on a level that lotions only dream of. Whether it’s after a long day under the sun or in the midst of the harmattan, a few drops of body oil can keep your skin supple and moisturised.

All the Glow, None of the Grease

If you’re picturing a greasy, oil-slick nightmare, let me stop you right there. Modern body oils are formulated to be lightweight, fast-absorbing, and, yes, non-greasy. They leave behind a subtle sheen that makes your skin look like it’s glowing from within— perfect for showing off those arms and legs. Plus, many are packed with shimmer particles to enhance your natural glow for that perfect Instagram-worthy shot.

Aromatherapy on the Go

There’s nothing like the soothing scent of lavender or the energizing aroma of citrus to lift your mood. Many body oils are infused with essential oils that offer aromatherapeutic benefits. It’s self-care in a bottle! Slathering on some oil can be a calming ritual that eases your mind while you treat your skin. It’s a twofor-one deal: You come out smelling divine and feeling relaxed.

Streamlined Skincare

Using body oils can streamline your skincare routine. A goodquality oil can replace your lotion, perfume, and sometimes even your hair serum. Just imagine trimming down your skincare shelf to just a few multitasking products—less clutter, more zen.

Perfect for All Seasons

While body oils are a godsend during the harmattan, they’re not just for the chilly months. The dry season skin can benefit hugely from oils, too. After sun exposure, a light layer of oil can help soothe and repair the skin. And for those who shave or wax, oils can help calm inflammation and reduce razor bumps and

irritation. Plus, there’s nothing quite like a sheeny oil to make that summer tan pop.

They Just Feel Luxurious

Let’s not skirt around it: using a body oil feels luxurious. There’s something inherently pampering about the way oil glides on your skin. It’s a daily dose of luxury that makes you feel like royalty. And honestly, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we could all use a little more of that regal feeling.

Tailored to Your Needs

The beauty of body oils lies in their versatility. Whether you have ageing skin that needs a boost of antioxidants, sensitive skin that requires gentle care, or dry skin that craves deep hydration, there’s an oil out there that’s perfect for you. Ingredients like coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, and even squalane are buzzwords for good reason—they really do cater to different needs and preferences.

How to Choose the Right Body Oil

With so many options available, choosing the right body oil can feel overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you select the best one for your needs:

1. Skin Type: For dry skin, look for oils like avocado or olive oil. For oily or acne-prone skin, lighter oils like jojoba or grapeseed are ideal.

2. Ingredients: Opt for natural and organic ingredients to avoid potential irritants and chemicals.

3. Fragrance: If you have sensitive skin, choose fragrance-free options or those with natural essential oils.

How to Apply Body Oil

The best time to apply body oil is right after a shower or bath when your skin is still damp. This helps to lock in moisture. Start with a small amount and massage it in using circular motions. Pay extra attention to areas prone to dryness, like elbows and knees. Remember, a little goes a long way, so you don’t need to douse yourself in oil to reap the benefits.

4.

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR BODY AND YOUR LIFE IN SIX SHORT WEEKS HERE’S HOW!

It sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? The idea that in just six weeks, you can turn your life and body around. Yet, with the right mindset, plan, and dedication, remarkable transformations are indeed possible. Whether you’re looking to kickstart a weight loss journey, build strength, or simply inject some much-needed vitality into your day-to-day life, here’s a comprehensive guide on how you can achieve significant changes in a relatively short period.

5. Play with Proportions

Understanding how to balance proportions can make a huge difference in your overall look. If you’re wearing something oversized on top, like a big tee, balance it with fitted pants or a pencil skirt. Conversely, pair wide-leg trousers with a fitted top to create a flattering silhouette. Playing with proportions can add an element of sophistication and ensure your outfit looks well put together.

Week 1: Setting Intentions and Preparing for Change

The first week is all about laying the groundwork. Start by defining clear, achievable goals. Are you aiming to lose weight, tone up, or perhaps improve your cardiovascular health? Once your objectives are set, it’s time to plan. This involves everything from scheduling your workouts to planning your meals. Preparation isn’t just about logistics; it’s also about preparing your mind. Commit to your goal and mentally prepare for the next six weeks—resilience will be key.

Week 2: Kickstarting Your Fitness

With your goals and schedule outlined, it’s time to get moving. If you’re new to exercise, start with moderate activities such as brisk walking or light jogging. Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise most days of the week. Incorporate strength training exercises at least twice this week, focusing on major muscle groups. The combination of cardio and strength training will kickstart your metabolism and begin building the foundations of a fitter you.

Week 3: Nutrition Overhaul

7. Experiment with Colour and Prints

While neutrals are versatile and essential, don’t shy away from experimentin§g with bold colours and prints. Try colour-blocking by pairing contrasting colours together, like a bright red blouse with a pink skirt. Mixing prints, such as stripes with florals, can also create a dynamic and interesting look. The key is to have fun and find combinations that resonate with your personality.

Exercise is only part of the equation. This week, focus on overhauling your diet. Clear out highly processed foods and replace them with whole, nutrientdense options. Think vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Hydration is crucial, so increase your water intake. Start experimenting with herbs and spices instead of salt or heavy sauces to keep your meals flavorful yet healthy. Remember, your diet fuels your body for workouts and recovery, making it a pivotal part of your transformation.

Week 4: Intensify and Optimise

By now, your body has started to adapt to your new activity level. It’s time to intensify your workouts. Increase the duration or intensity of your cardiovascular exercises and add an extra day of strength training. Consider incorporating interval training, which can help boost endurance and calorie burn. This week, also focus on optimising your sleep—aim for 7-8 hours per night to ensure your body has enough time to recover and rebuild.

Week 5: Mental Health and Consistency

Physical transformation is often linked with mental changes. This week, engage in activities that boost your mental health. Yoga, meditation, or even simple breathing exercises can improve your stress levels, mood, and overall well-being. Consistency in your workouts and diet is key, so keep at your routine even when you feel like you’re hitting a plateau.

Week 6: Reflect, Adjust, and Plan Ahead

In the final week, reflect on the progress you’ve made. It’s important to recognise the changes in your body and mind. Adjust your goals as needed—if you’ve lost weight, maybe you should focus on toning; if you’ve gained muscle, perhaps aim to enhance your cardiovascular health. Start planning beyond the six weeks to maintain and continue improving your fitness and health.

The Sustainable Approach

Six weeks is just the beginning. The changes you make during this time can set the foundation for longlasting health and wellness habits. It’s about creating a lifestyle that supports continual growth and well-being. Remember, quick fixes don’t lead to lasting changes, but a dedicated, holistic approach can transform your life in ways you never imagined possible.

7 HIGHLIGHTS FROM BIG BROTHER SEASON 9 OPENING NIGHT

The highly anticipated Big Brother Season 9 kicked off with a bang, delivering an opening night filled with excitement, surprises, and unforgettable moments. Here are the top seven highlights that set the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating season:

1.The Jaw-Dropping House Tour

This season’s Big Brother house has always been a visual masterpiece, albeit with mixed reactions, but the general consensus is that the house is stunning this season! The house is also a lot bigger. The biggest they’ve ever had, actually. It would seem major renovations were under way all this time from the general lounge to rooms, dressing room, etc. The tour revealed a chic, modern design with vibrant colours and luxurious decor. The attention to detail and the fusion of comfort and elegance set a new standard for the show.

2. Housemates in Pairs

We’ve known for some time now that the housemates were coming in twos, but we didn’t anticipate how that would work until we saw them actually come in. It seems this twist will actually shake things up, making it all the more exciting. The contestants made their grand entrances in stunning outfits that showcased their unique personalities. From dazzling sequins to sharp suits, the housemates brought their fashion A-game, leaving viewers eager to see more of their style and charisma in the coming weeks.

3. Couple-Bestie Goals

Speaking of pairs, there have been married people on the show before, but not in this way; not an actual couple who are married to one another. Even more, while the audience knows they are married, their housemates will not. They are going in as besties! That’s not all still; although they’d been together for about ten years, they’d only been married for a few months. They are practically spending their honeymoon in Big Brother’s house. Risky much?

4. Big Brother for Family

This nearly takes us back to the days of Maltina Dance All, when different families competed against one another. Now, we have an aunt and her niece coming in as a pair. This definitely took everyone by surprise, but we’re here for all the surprises and exciting twists this season seems to have packed!

5. Two Twins

What’s a season with pairs if we don’t have twins? Big Brother gave us not one but two sets of identical twins! We particularly love the balance of seeing both male and female identical twins. We can’t wait to see what confusing twist Big Brother will play with this.

6. The Fashion

Starting with the host himself, Ebuka, who stunned as usual in 3 different exquisite outfits, all designed by Mai Atafo.

We’re also used to the housemates going all out for their outfits for the launch show, but we’ll have to say that the guys stole the show this year! We especially loved the agbadas adorned by Topher and Action Ben.

7. Host Tricks

Ebuka had us wide-eyed and off our seats for a moment when he announced, just after welcoming everyone into the house, that one pair would be leaving that same night. We’re glad it was a joke, though, because otherwise, it would certainly have garnered mixed reactions from housemates and the audience.

As the curtain rises on Big Brother Season 9, these highlights set the stage for a season filled with drama, entertainment, and unexpected moments. With a diverse cast of housemates, a luxurious house, and twists that keep everyone on their toes, viewers are in for an unforgettable journey. Over the remaining 64 days, we’ll watch as the drama unfolds in what promises to be one of the most exciting seasons yet!

NNEKA ONYEALI-IKPE LEADING WITH FIDELITY!

From the outset, Nneka’s journey into the banking world was a challenge to the traditional gender roles of her culture. Her academic foundation was laid at the esteemed University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and further solidified with a Master of Law from King’s College, London. Her thirst for knowledge and growth led her to executive training at renowned institutions like Harvard Business School and The Wharton School. This journey culminated in a Diploma in Organizational Leadership from Said Business School, Oxford University, a testament to her commitment to continuous learning and growth.

When Nneka joined Fidelity Bank in 2015 as an Executive Director, her vision was clear and transformative. Her appointment as the bank’s first female MD/CEO in 2021 was a historic moment, breaking glass ceilings and setting a new precedent for leadership within the industry. Under her leadership, Fidelity Bank has experienced unprecedented growth, with profits reaching new heights. This is a clear testament to her strategic prowess and innovative banking practices, which have reshaped the bank’s trajectory. Nneka’s leadership style is deeply rooted in authentic engagement with her teams and clients. She strongly believes in the power of relationships to drive growth. This philosophy has seen her reposition Fidelity Bank as a formidable force in the banking sector, particularly in retail, corporate, and commercial banking. Her ability to spearhead complex transactions in diverse sectors such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and real estate underscores her multifaceted expertise and dynamic approach to banking.

Passion for innovation is another cornerstone of Nneka’s tenure. She has been instrumental in launching cutting-edge products like PayGate Plus, a platform that revolutionises how businesses handle transactions, setting Fidelity Bank apart in a competitive market. Her foresight in embracing technology and innovation has enhanced Fidelity’s operational efficiency and improved customer experience across the board.

The success of FITCC, particularly its international editions, showcases Nneka’s commitment to extending Fidelity’s influence beyond Nigerian borders, reinforcing her vision of a bank that serves as a global connector of opportunities.

In this interview with Funke Babs Kufeji, she talks about her journey, inspirations, and aspirations, offering a unique glimpse into the mind of one of Nigeria’s most influential business leaders as she looks ahead to the next chapter of a storied career.

Your tenure as CEO of Fidelity Bank was extended to 2026 this year. Why is this?

Looking back, how is the Bank different from when you first became CEO in 2021?

I’m humbled by the board of directors’ decision to extend my tenure. For me, the decision attests to the hard work my team and have put into positioning the Bank as a leading player in the industry. Today, we have carved a niche for ourselves as a renowned banking institution dedicated to helping individuals grow, empowering businesses to thrive, and supporting local economies to prosper.

In the last four years, a series of Women have emerged as Bank CEOs. As the first female CEO of a bank in Nigeria, tell us more about yourself and your journey to becoming the CEO of Fidelity Bank. Women bring a lot of value to the table in leading organisations. This recognition is reflected in the growing number of female CEOs in the banks’ boardrooms. My journey to becoming the CEO of Fidelity Bank began around 34 years ago when started my banking career. Starting as a young female banker in a vastly maledominated industry, I decided that would reach the peak of my profession, so I put in the work and dedication. I acquired the necessary skills and remained focused on my goal of reaching the top. Over the course of my career, was fortunate to work in multiple roles across several important banks, which eventually led to my appointment as the MD/CEO of Fidelity Bank. Today, advocacy for gender equity is more than it used to be compared to when started. This has resulted in more success in women being appointed to leadership positions across key sectors of the economy.

I’m humbled by the board of directors’ decision to extend my tenure. For me, the decision attests to the hard work my team and I have put into positioning the Bank as a leading player in the industry.

Why do you think it took this long for women to be recognised and attain the office of the CEO in the banking sector?

While it has not been commonplace, we have had female CEOs lead institutions as far back as the 1990s. think these women did a good job demonstrating the efficacy and multiplication women bring to leading banks, and their performance blazed the trail for the rest of us. Now, we are able to demonstrate that women can do well in the driver’s seat in any banking institution, and many organisations are actively supporting this.

Now that women seem to be having their moments, what systems have you put in place at Fidelity to make sure more women CEO evolve?

I don’t think the goal is to ensure a male or female CEO emerges. Rather, to ensure equal opportunity is given to candidates regardless of their gender. think the goal should be equal opportunity for both men and women in the workplace. Thus, my aim as CEO is to foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity that ensures our staff enjoy equal opportunities for career advancement and leadership roles regardless of gender. As of today, our employee gender composition is 50.2% female and 49.8% male.

Let’s talk about finance. Many women in Nigeria and even worldwide still don’t have access to financial services. Why is this a problem, and how, as a woman at the helm of financial affairs, are you correcting this?

Financial Inclusion is a challenge we are tackling head-on at Fidelity Bank. We subscribe to the school of thought that for us to have a prosperous economy, women—who account for over 41% of Nigerian small businesses—need to be adequately catered to. We have therefore introduced several initiatives to close the gap in serving the womenfolk. Today, we have a unique proposition (HerFidelity) that caters to the needs of women across different cadres.

Can you tell us more about HerFidelity’s proposition for women?

In 2022, we created a special proposition called HerFidelity to support women across different cadres in meeting their aspirations. HerFidelity is a community-driven initiative that provides support for women through four strategic pillars, namely: Access to Capital -where we support female customers with access to grants and loans at concessionary rates; Capacity Building -where we have upskilled female entrepreneurs in digital marketing, financial reporting, budgeting & planning, tailoring, auto-mechanics and several other skill sets through our dedicated apprenticeship programmes. We also have the Health & Wellness pillar -through which we host regular advocacy programmes for healthy living amongst womenfolk through initiatives like free cervical cancer screening and other medical outreaches, as well as the Entrepreneurship Support pillar.

When you took office in 2021, what were some of the key priorities you tackled as a woman CEO, and how did you gain respect from your male counterparts in a male-dominated industry?

Starting out in 2021 as MD/CEO, my vision for the Bank was clear, and I quickly identified eight focus areas that would guide me in executing it. These areas included Brand Refresh, Workforce Transformation, Digital Transformation, Innovation, Service Excellence, Accelerated Growth, and Performance Discipline. For me, the immediate priority was to put the Bank on a consistent growth trajectory and ensure our customers are delighted with our service delivery. Luckily, I have been blessed with a very supportive board of directors and one of the most competent teams in the banking industry. With this in place, the only direction we could go was forward, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Looking back, I can say we have made commendable strides across each of these pillars. Today, the Fidelity brand is well recognised locally and internationally, thanks to our brand refresh exercise. We have also upskilled our staff and promoted an average of 15% of them annually in the last three years. For our Digital Transformation pillar, we have revamped our systems and processes to provide a more seamless and enriching experience; for innovation, we have introduced several platforms to deepen our customer

experience even as we continually review our processes. Similarly, we revamped our products and services for Service Excellence, which resulted in our improved rating in the 2023 KPMG Customer Experience Survey. For Accelerated Growth and Performance Discipline pillars, our quarterly financial performance demonstrates our success as we have achieved a Cumulative Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 64% and share performance by around 290% over the last three years. Perhaps nothing highlights our strong performance over the last three years, such as the multiple awards and recognition we have received from local and international bodies like the Financial Times, Euromoney, Global Finance, The Banker Magazine, Businessday, Development Bank of Nigeria, and so on.

What systems and plans have you put in place at Fidelity Bank so far to continue to innovate and make it a leading bank in Nigeria?

When took office, initiated a platform revamp project to, among other things, drive efficiency and innovation of new products. With our investment in IT infrastructure, we have seen an uptick in transaction volumes and customer onboarding. One of the strategic decisions we have made is establishing an IT steering committee at the board level, which has been instrumental in our IT revamp agenda.

Your tenure saw the expansion of Fidelity Bank to the United Kingdom; how has this move impacted the Bank in the finance sector?

Our expansion to the United Kingdom is borne out of our strategy to deepen our trade financing play and grow our service offerings to High Networth Individuals (HNIs) and diaspora customers. I am glad that since our foray into the UK market, we have started to see the benefits of our synergy in customer transactions and bottom-line growth. Since the commencement of our UK office in 2023, profit before tax has grown by 131.5%

What is the Bank also doing to grow its regional presence?

We are doing quite a bit in that space as we are considering several countries that make business sense for us to open shop in. For us, it goes beyond expanding across Africa to identifying countries where we can make meaningful economic impact. Some of the capital we get from our Public Offer and Rights Issue will be deployed towards expanding our footprints across Africa in strategic markets.

Can you share any of the most significant upgrades the Bank has made to its IT (information technology) infrastructure in recent years?

And have any of those upgrades been carried out to improve the Bank’s retail-banking credentials?

The reality of banking today is that you can not afford to play catch up with innovation, especially if you want to be regarded as a leader in the

retail banking space. Hence, we are constantly upgrading our platforms to keep up with our expanding customer base and evolving customer needs. As a matter of fact, one of the objectives for our current recapitalisation drive is to raise funds to bolster our IT systems. Our performance in the retail banking space has not gone unnoticed, as we have won several awards for the value we bring to customers’ businesses. Some of these awards include the Best SME Bank Nigeria by the Global Banking & Finance Awards and the Platinum and Service Ambassadors Awards by the Development Bank of Nigeria, amongst others.

What are some successful social-responsibility initiatives the Bank has undertaken since you took the position?

At Fidelity Bank, we believe we are only as successful as the communities we serve and are always executing impactful projects across our 251 business locations. Since 2021, we have done a lot of work across our four CSR pillars of Education, Environment, Health & Social Welfare, and Youth Empowerment.

In the education space, we have renovated several schools across the country and just concluded the first season of our reading advocacy programme, Read2Lead. In the Environment, we regularly advocate for tree planting as a means of addressing desertification and have also adopted several gardens across the country for maintenance.

Through our Food Bank initiative, which drives our Health and Social Welfare pillar, we have distributed more than 100,000 food bags in over 80 communities nationwide since we launched the project in April 2023. Furthermore, recognising Tech’s growing impact on young people, we recently sponsored the African Tech Expo to drive our objectives under our Youth Empowerment pillar.

Going a bit personal now, you recently turned 60. Congratulations. Do you see this age coming with major life changes?

wish I could say that my schedule is slowing down now but that isn’t the situation. The reality is that we live in a very interesting time, and there’s just so much to keep up with. For me, I’m learning to enjoy the benefits of hindsight and having a reticent approach to issues when I can.

What are some things you would like to take more time to do now you are 60?

Quality time with family is key. would also certainly love to explore my hobbies some more. am also passionate about community development/ mentorship, and I will be initiating some projects along this line soon.

When you don’t have your CEO hat on, what do you like to do? love spending time with my family, cooking, and traveling to explore the world.

I don’t think the goal is to ensure a male or female CEO emerges. Rather, to ensure equal opportunity is given to candidates regardless of their gender.

1. Style That Speaks

First things first: your style is your signature. It’s more than just wearing the latest trends; it’s about setting them. Successful influencers have a unique style that makes them stand out in a sea of fashionistas. Whether it’s a love for vintage finds, a flair for boho chic, or a minimalist approach, having a distinct style isn’t just about attracting followers—it’s about keeping them engaged.

2. Consistency is Key

If fashion is the heart of an influencer’s career, consistency is the backbone. This doesn’t mean wearing the same outfit every Tuesday—although if that’s your thing, why not? It means maintaining a consistent posting schedule, tone of voice, and quality. Followers need to know they can rely on you for their daily dose of inspiration, whether it’s through posts, Stories, Reels, or all of the above. Remember, in the world of

social media, out of sight often means out of mind.

3. Engage Like You Mean It Engagement is not just a metric; it’s a relationship. Influencers often spend hours responding to comments, messages, and emails. This connection is what transforms followers into a loyal community. Sharing behind-the-scenes content, personal stories, or everyday mishaps makes you relatable, which is gold in the influencer economy.

4. Brand Relationships: Choose Wisely As your follower count grows, so will the attention from brands. But not every brand partnership is a good fit. The most successful influencers are selective with their collaborations, choosing brands that align with their style and values. This discernment ensures that promotional content is authentic rather than forced,

which is crucial for maintaining trust with your audience.

5. Collaborate, Don’t Isolate Influencing might seem like a solo journey, but it’s really a bustling network. Collaborate with other influencers, join forces with brands, and create content that showcases these partnerships. This doesn’t just broaden your audience— it also adds credibility to your personal brand. Remember, in fashion, who you know can be just as important as what you know.

6. Stay Ahead of the Trends (or Set Them)

While classic styles are timeless, knowing (or setting) the latest trends can set you apart. This means keeping your pulse on fashion weeks, understanding seasonal must-haves, and predicting what’s next before it hits the shelves. If you’re always one step ahead, your content will be too.

7. The Tech Setup

Underneath every stunning post, there’s a tale of tech wizardry. A good influencer’s toolkit includes:

• A reliable camera (or a high-quality smartphone).

• Lighting equipment.

• Editing software.

• Perhaps a drone for those swooping panoramic shots.

Knowing how to use these tools to create eyecatching content is just as important as knowing the difference between a midi and a maxi skirt.

8. Learning from Failures

Not every post will be a hit, and not every outfit will win applause. The key is resilience. Influencers often share stories of outfits that flopped or posts that bombed, using these experiences as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. It’s about learning, adapting, and always moving forward.

9. Staying True to Yourself

With the allure of brand deals and sponsorships, it’s easy to slip into a pattern of posts that feel more like ads than content. The influencers who stand the test of time are those who manage to balance monetization with authenticity. They stay true to their aesthetic and voice, ensuring that any sponsored content they do share still feels genuine to their brand.

10. The Business Acumen

Behind every successful influencer is a savvy businessperson. Managing contracts, negotiating deals, understanding analytics, and planning content are just as important as choosing the right outfit. Many influencers hire managers to help with these aspects, but having your own understanding of the business can make a significant difference.

11. Lastly, Continuous Learning

The digital landscape is ever-evolving, and staying relevant means keeping up with the latest platforms, trends, and algorithm changes. Continuous learning and adapting are part of the job description, whether that’s mastering a new social media tool or understanding global fashion trends.

TOKE MAKINWA RETURNS TO HOST ‘THE BUZZ’ FOR BBNAIJA SEASON 9: AN EXCLUSIVE

Toke Makinwa is back as the host of ‘The Buzz,’ the companion talk show to Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) only on Showmax, which dives deep into the reality show’s drama, controversies, and highlights. As a devoted fan of BBNaija and an experienced host, she brings her unique perspective and vibrant personality to the table. In this exclusive interview with Style, she shares her excitement about returning to ‘The Buzz’ and what viewers can expect this season.

Hey Toke, how does it feel to return as the host of The Buzz for BBNaija season 9?

It feels really incredible! I have missed the show. I am such a huge fan of the BBNaija franchise, and Big Brother is such an incredible social experiment. The Buzz is literally the analysis of the show; it is where we get around to talking about every single thing that has to do with Big Brother Naija. We discuss and have guests stop by to air their views about the housemates, Biggie’s rules, and everything that has to do with the show. So I’m super excited that, you know, The Buzz is back, and of course, am the host.

How do you handle the pressure of hosting a show with such a massive following?

Honestly, you can never ever fully grasp how, you know, huge the platform is until the show starts. mean, constant Twitter wars with the fans, constant conversations with them, thinking their faves deserve to be treated differently. I just absolutely love just how it’s all love after all.

How do you think The Buzz contributes to the overall BBNaija experience for fans?

I think the fans feel like they’re heard and seen and matter and belong.

The Buzz is literally the analysis of the show; it is where we get around to talking about every single thing that has to do with Big Brother Naija. We discuss and have guests stop by to air their views about the housemates, Biggie’s rules, and everything that has to do with the show

Bolanle Austen-Peters, the 55-year-old lawyer turned film and theatre producer, delivers yet another compelling narrative with her latest movie, “House of Ga’a.” This film marks a significant departure from her previous projects, diving deep into themes of cultural heritage, family dynamics, and societal expectations. With a keen eye for detail, Austen-Peters crafts a story that is both timeless and timely.

Talking about BBNaija, what are your thoughts on the impact BBNaija has on popular culture in Nigeria?

I think it depicts who we are as a people. BBNaija is a classic mirror that mirrors the lives and times of people you know, live with, work with, and

Let’s go personal. What does a typical day in Toke Makinwa’s life look

Busy, currently usually running in between sets; once I’m done with my media work, there’s my entrepreneurial side, where I have to overlook certain things as well. So, my days usually get really hectic. But I love all that do and the hats I wear, so I’m generally up to juggling and running from one thing to another. It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s also the kind of pressure needed to keep you on your toes. So, I’m up for it.

And about work, how do you stay motivated and maintain your drive in such a competitive industry?

I think I just focus on my lane. You need to focus on what you’re called to do. You cannot get your grass tended if you keep looking at how low and how high the next person’s grass bed is. You literally have to stay in your lane and row your boat and be aware, very aware, of your journey and how lucky and blessed you are to be living out your gift. Because so many people are stuck in indecisiveness and not even knowing where to begin. But here you are, literally just experimenting through life. So, it’s a blessing that I don’t take for granted. And I stay focused on myself, and that’s my biggest competition.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?

The most rewarding aspect of my career? Having an idea, fiddling with it, going through my nerves, putting it to life, and actually seeing it come to life is really, really rewarding.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind in the media and entertainment industry?

I want every young girl out there to think, believe, accept, and walk in their purpose, knowing that the sky is big enough and that if there are people who have done it fearlessly, they too can.

What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned throughout your ca-

I’ll share three. Nobody really cares that much; worrying about how people feel about you is pointless because everybody has their own situations that they’re trying to walk through. It’s important to stay teachable; you don’t know it all. The day you think you do is the day you’re out. And also, never, ever, ever, ever underestimate the power of prayer; it changes everything.

Looking back at your journey, is there anything you would have done

I think regret is exhausting. try not to leave my life in regret. Everything that happened in my life, good and bad, has worked both hand in hand to get me to this place called beautiful. And life is meant to be lived forward and understood backwards. I’m still going to make many more mistakes, so why would I regret it as long as I know that I’m true to myself and my heart’s intention is good? I’m not worried about things that don’t go as planned because oftentimes, better things come together when they fall apart.

HOUSE OF GA’A

Spoiler Free Summary “House of Ga’a” revolves around the family of a prominent Oyo warrior who is soon named Bashorun by the Alaafin.

We see Ga’a become power drunk, especially after the title of Bashorun is conferred to him. The Oyomesi (kingmakers) fear him, so they let him do whatever he wants. Ga’a amassed much support rooted in fear, installing and displacing kings at will, keeping taxes and tributes for himself and much more. His ever-growing greed and pride cause him to make reckless decisions till everything he worked hard to build comes crashing down all around him.

Review

The star-studded film meticulously explores themes such as the burden of legacy, the quest for identity, family, love, betrayal, and more.

If there’s anything we were very impressed with in this movie, it was the VFX and SFX. Clearly, no expense was spared!

We’ve seen major improvements in Nollywood’s SFX and VFX, but we have to say that Austen-Peters really knocked this one out of the park. It wasn’t perfect, but it was one of the best we’ve seen recently.

We’d also like to thank her for bringing Yemi Blaq out of hiding—we had missed him on our screens!

This brings us to other honourable mentions of some of the actors that blew us away: Femi Branch, Jide Oyegbile, Bimbo Manuel, William Benson, Mike Afolarin, Ibrahim Chatta, Dele Odule, Funke Akindele, Temilolu Fosudo, Bridget Nkem, Femi Adebayo, and many more!

We need to circle back to Femi Branch again because he acted like his life depended on it. We’ve always known him to be a fantastic actor, but we saw him in a light we’ve never seen before in this movie. We look forward to seeing him sweep awards for this performance during the award season.

We also doff our hats, especially to Jide Oyegbile, who delivered on his role perfectly and played off so well with Femi Branch.

We love that the story unfolds organically, allowing characters to develop and for the audience to engage deeply with their journeys.

The cinematography equally captures vision beauti-

fully, with each frame thoughtfully composed, adding layers of meaning to the narrative.

The set design, costumes, makeup, etc, all instantly transported us to the time of the reign of the Oyo empire as intended. You nearly forget you’re in the 21st century. The entire production team did an amazing job of making the movie seem as real as possible.

The use of language and infusion of certain traditions were also beautiful to watch.

However, a few things left a sour taste in our mouths, especially towards the end.

First of all, the movie was perfectly built up, and we were expecting some sort of mind-blowing revenge in the end from Ga’a’s son, Oyemekun. Not only did he narrate all the way to the end, but he also mentioned how he drastically changed after the love of his life was murdered. We barely got to see that change, and all of the build-up seemed to amount to nothing for him.

Secondly, the initial portrayal of the “Nupe Witch”, Zainab hinted at her possibly having something to do with Ga’a’s inevitable downfall. However, it would seem there was no use to her character as she didn’t particularly have any effect on the overall plot.

We also have a couple of cases of disappearing characters, only for them to return later without a proper explanation.

Granted, these were quite frustrating for us, but everything else was just too good; it made the movie’s shortcomings seem very trivial. If you haven’t seen it yet, it is now showing on Netflix, and we highly encourage you to do so and prepare yourself for a wild roller coaster ride!

ONYEKA ONWENU

THE ELEGANT STALLION

Early Life and Education

Born on May 17, 1952, in Arondizuogu, Imo State, Onyeka was the daughter of D.K. Onwenu, a politician, and Hope Onwenu, a singer. Tragedy struck early when she lost her father in an auto crash at just four years old. Despite this early loss, Onyeka’s mother nurtured her talents and aspirations, laying a foundation that would see her rise to prominence. Onyeka’s educational journey took her to the United States, where she attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, earning a BA in International Relations and Communication. She furthered her studies with a master’s in media studies from The New School for Social Research in New York. This academic background equipped her with a unique perspective that she would bring to her diverse career.

Upon her return to Nigeria in 1980, Onyeka joined the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) for her mandatory one-year national service. It was during this time that she began her music career, releasing her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. The album marked the beginning of a new era in Nigerian music, blending contemporary sounds with traditional African rhythms.

Onyeka’s music career is studded with hits that have become classics in Nigerian music. Songs like “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” “You and I,” and “Ekwe” resonated with audiences, earning her a place among the greats of Nigerian music. Me,” and “Choices” showcased her versatility and ability to address social issues through music.

Her contributions to the music industry were not just limited to her recordings. In 2013, she served as one of the judges on the Nigerian version of The X Factor, helping to mentor and inspire a new generation of Nigerian musicians.

Acting Career

Onyeka’s talents were not confined to music alone. She made significant strides in Nollywood, Nigeria’s burgeoning film industry. Journalism and Advocacy

Onyeka was not just a performer but also a voice for change. Her work as a journalist included writing and narrating the 1984 documentary “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches,” a collaboration between the BBC and NTA that highlighted corruption in Nigeria. This work underscored her commitment

to using media as a tool for social change. Her advocacy extended to women’s rights and development. Appointed as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013, Onyeka worked tirelessly to advance the cause of women in Nigeria.

Political Career

Onyeka’s foray into politics saw her joining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and becoming a significant figure in Nigerian public service. Her leadership of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later the National Centre for Women Development reflected her dedication to cultural and social development.

Personal Life and Legacy

Onyeka Onwenu was a woman of many talents but was also a devoted mother to her two sons, Tijani Charles and Abraham. She raised her children with a fierce independence, often sharing how she chose to leave a difficult marriage to ensure she could provide a nurturing environment for them. Her commitment to her family was unwavering, and she often spoke about balancing her career and personal life.

Her memoir, “My Father’s Daughter,” published in 2021, offered an intimate look at her life, including her experiences in the male-dominated music and film industries and her encounters with other Nigerian icons like Fela Kuti.

Final Performance and Passing

Onyeka’s final performance took place at a private party in Lagos. She had just finished captivating her audience with her timeless voice when she suddenly fell ill. Hours later, she passed away at a nearby hospital. Her passing sent shockwaves through Nigeria and the global community, with tributes pouring in from all corners of the world. It also marks the end of an era, but her legacy lives on through her music, films, and the countless lives she touched through her activism and public service.
