he death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a once-in-a-lifetime event for Britain and a profound shock that millions will feel the world over. As expected, people reacted with emotion, and nature acknowledged with a double rainbow in the skies over Buckingham Palace as its flag was lowered to half mast. She was a symbol of consistency and the link between the generations. Of course, the passing of the queen was a certainty, seeing that she had come of age and had become increasingly frail in the recent times we had seen her. Still, it felt unthinkable that someone who had been a permanent fixture for all of our lives would suddenly no longer be with us. And that’s why this feels like a personal loss for many people; accross the world, it feels like a priceless treasure has been lost. And that’s the thing about death generally. We never want to accept the thought of it till it happens. It’s scary to think that one day we’ll have to live without our mother, father, brother, husband, or wife. Or that one day we’ll have to walk this earth without our best friend by our side, or them without us. This right here is one of the million reasons you should appreciate your loved ones while you can. None of us is going to be here forever. Let’s not even go into heartwrenching stories about people who didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones. It shouldn’t take a global crisis to make us realize that we should never wait to say, “I love you” to those who matter most to us. Here we are, learning the hardest way imaginable that “tomorrow” is never promised. So, I am urging you (begging you, really)- don’t wait to tell people you love them! Shout it from the rooftops today.

Q

ueen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral, aged 96. Her death brings to a close a reign that spanned seven decades and made her the most recognized woman in the world. She died peacefully at her Scottish estate, Balmoral. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor on 21 April 1926, Queen Elizabeth was the first child of Albert, Duke of York, second son of George V, and his duchess, the former Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She didn’t become heir presumptive to the throne until 1937, when her father was crowned King George VI after the abdication of his older brother. In preparation for her role as Queen, she was educated privately at home and began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73

years until his death in April 2021. They had four children: Charles III; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. Her long reign, marked by her strong sense of duty and dedication to her throne and her people, also marked Britain’s transformation from a war-weary declining imperial power into a modern multi-cultural state. She longer needed the monarch for leadership but still held her in high esteem. Her success in maintaining the monarchy is even more remarkable given that, at the time of her birth, no one could have foreseen it as part of her destiny. Her death comes seven months after she marked the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne, yet another milestone achievement in the remarkable life of a queen who, though reluctantly thrust into the spotlight at a young age, won almost universal praise for her steadfast dedication to duty.

Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion moments

A lesson in style and feminine strength

H

THINGS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT QUEEN ELIZABETH II

From being fluent in French to learning how to drive while serving in World War II, here are ten interesting facts you probably didn’t know about Queen Elizabeth II, who, until her death, was perhaps the most famous monarch in the world.

She learnt how to drive in 1945 The Queen learned how to drive during her time in the army.

1977 - THE QUEEN DURING HER VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND AS PART OF HER SILVER JUBILEE YEAR TOUR.

She spoke fluent French

er hats, bejewelled mini bags, brooch, love for bold colours and sensible shoes will always remain fresh in our minds. Queen Elizabeth II left behind the style legacy of one who totally resisted trends but always made a style statement. Yes, she might not have had the allure of a Hollywood star, but Her Majesty’s style legacy is a lesson in unwavering integrity of identity. Throughout her reign, her fashion choices always needed to be more diplomatic and significant in message. The right colour and style had to be picked. For every outing, she never failed to make a statement. She once said she “had to be seen to be believed,” hence her penchant for bright colours that stood her out in a crowd. Brooches, dress suits, brimmed hats, patent pumps and top-handle handbags are the pieces that made up Her on-duty wardrobe. A dedicated Monarch who always placed service first, it made sense that she treated her approach to dressing with such regimented formula. At this point, it must be noted how traditionally feminine her outfits were, clearly buttressing that the message she was sent to the commonwealth and the wider world was one of feminine strength.

Queen Elizabeth II learnt to speak French at a young age from French and Belgian governesses. She often speaks in the country’s language when visiting.

She woke up to a bagpiper every morning

The Queen didn’t need a driver’s license, a license plate, or a passport Since all British passports are issued in her name, she didn’t need or have one. She also doesn’t require a driver’s license or a license plate on her car.

Her nickname was “Lilibet”. When she was young, she got the nickname “Lilibet” because she couldn’t pronounce her name. King George VI used to talk about his daughters, saying, “Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.”

She studied Constitutional History and Law The Queen was tutored at home by Britain’s best tutors. She studied constitutional history and law as preparation for her future role and took lessons in religion from the Archbishop of Canterbury.

She first met her husband, Prince Philip, when she was eight Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip met officially in 1934 at the wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Prince George, Duke of Kent.

Her husband, Prince Philip, is also her third cousin The Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, are technically third cousins through Queen Victoria. Prince Philip is related to Victoria through his maternal side and Queen Elizabeth through her paternal side. Elizabeth and Philip are third cousins through Queen Victoria of Britain, as she was both of their greatgreat-grandmothers.

1989 - VISITING ST ANNE’S CHURCH IN A RED MONOCHROMATIC LOOK

The Queen doesn’t use an alarm clock. Her bagpiper served as one. She was woken up to him playing outside her window for 15 minutes every morning at 9 am.

She celebrated her birthday twice a year The Queen’s birthday was April 21, but the country doesn’t officially celebrate until June 11. Monarchs with birthdays in colder months typically schedule an additional, official birthday when the weather is likely to be better for a parade. Elizabeth had one every June called Trooping the Colour.

The Queen’s Hats

Her Words

I

f there ever was a fashion accessory that the Queen couldn’t do without, it had to be her Hats. Since her accession to the throne, she was constantly seen at every outing donning a hat full of character so much that it, over time, became a trend. From floral topped to turbans and everything in between, here is a look at some of our favourites.

Over the nearly 70 years that she ruled Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth shared many words of wisdom. Here are some of the most inspiring and witty words “It’s worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change.” “The birth of a baby brings great happiness but then the business of growing up begins.”

“When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future.” “The importance of family has, of course, come home to Prince Philip and me personally this year with the marriages of two of our grandchildren, each in their own way a celebration of the Godgiven love that binds a family together.”

2012

1962

Queen Elizabeth II on life, family, faith and service

“Although we are capable of great acts of kindness, history teaches us that we sometimes

need saving from ourselves–from our recklessness or our greed.” “In times of doubt and anxiety the attitudes people show in their daily lives, in their homes, and in their work, are of supreme importance.” “Over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal, and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration, to work together.” “Even when your life seems most monotonous, what you do is always of real value — and importance to your fellow men.” “Everyone is our neighbor; no matter what race, creed, or color.” “It has been women who have breathed gentleness and care into

the harsh progress of mankind.” “It has always been easy to hate and destroy. To build and to cherish is much more difficult.” “Through the many changes I have seen over the years, faith, family, and friendship have been not only a constant for me, but a source of personal comfort and reassurance.” “I believe that, young or old, we have as much to look forward to with confidence and hope as we have to look back on with pride.” “Reflecting on these events makes me grateful for the blessings of home and family and, in particular, for 70 years of marriage. I don’t know that anyone had invented the term ‘platinum’ for a 70th wedding anniversary. When I was born, you weren’t expected to be around that long.”

WHY TEMS IS IN A CLASS OF HER OWN By Charles Didee Eta

A

…Pop’s New Global It Girl

nyone who has listened to Tems knows that she loves to sing and does an excellent job of it. This unique talent has turned the 27year old singer and songwriter into an absolute star and pop’s latest global IT girl. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Temilade Openiyi is the first child of Mr and Mrs Openiyi, a Nigerian mother and a British-Nigerian father. They happened to live in Nigeria, but shortly after her birth, they moved to the United Kingdom in search of better opportunities. Unfortunately, her parents would eventually go their separate ways when she was five, an event that would bring her and her siblings back to Nigeria to live with her mother. She attended Doween College in the Lekki environment and then proceeded with her tertiary education by attending “Monash” in South Africa, where she studied Economics. While in school, she got noticed by her music teacher, who strongly encouraged her to sing and embrace her unique vocals and singing style. That encouragement enabled her to participate in school choir presentations and recording sessions. “Right from a young age, I’ve always loved music and always indulged in creating. As a matter of fact, music has always been my means of expression. I loved Aaliyah. Loved her whole album. I also enjoyed listening to Destiny’s child and Lauren Hill. It was always music for me.” she says to Thisday Style.

20

From then on, falling in love in love with music was the next natural step for her. She would practice alongside her brother singing as he played the guitar. At some point, she perfected her piano play and interest in beats production and has been steadily rising to the occasion since then. Her first entrance into our worlds was the sensational “Mr Rebel” in 2018, which happened to be her very first single, where she proved her place as an alternative soul singer and a music producer. But that was just the beginning because she solidified her sound when she dropped her second single in 2019, titled “Try me”. This got a much bigger reaction than her previous release, buttressing on her distinct blend of alternative, afrobeats and RnB/Soul as a genre that seemed to be missing in the mainstream scene. During an interview in 2018, she was asked the artist she really wanted to work with, and she stated that she would love to work with Drake. Well, her dream certainly came to pass. For some reason, Tems always makes really impactful collaborations. First, it was her featuring in the remix of “Know Your Worth” by singer Khalid and fellow Nigerian artist Davido, then the globally explosive “Essence”, where she worked with Afrobeat giant Wizkid. Let’s not forget her memorable feature in Drake’s album on the “Fountains” track which made her the first Nigerian

female artist to make it to number 10 on the Billboard Top 100 charts and twice for that matter. This milestone only propelled her to produce an entire body of work named “For Broken Ears” that gained commercial success in most parts of Africa, North America, and Europe—stapling her name on a global scale amongst the greats in the music industry. To say she’s winning is an understatement. She is the first African female artist in history to have a No. 1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 charts due to her recent feature on Future’s new single “WAIT FOR U,” where her vocals were sampled from her 2020 song “Higher”. She’s an ambassador for Coca-Cola. Delivered Black Panther- Wakanda Forever soundtrack and is on Beyonce’s renaissance album on the 10th track titled “Move”. Not stopping there, Tems recently got nominated for three categories at the 22nd BET Awards, winning two of the three awards in best collaboration alongside Wizkid and best international act. Her career has skyrocketed to unimaginable heights in such a short time, yet it still feels like just the beginning. While we all see a global superstar, for Tems, it’s all about the music. Living and breathing her work. Every other thing is a bonus. “I just make sure I’m vibing every day,” she says. Every day? “Every single day.”

Examine your style and lifestyle

Knowing your style is the most important step in creating a wardrobe you love. Ask yourself what you enjoy doing, what your closet essentials are, and how frequently you wear them. These fundamental questions will get you started, allowing you to shop wisely.

BOTTEGA VENETTA

Keep track of your outfits

To fully understand your innate style, keep track of what you wear for about a month. There are several methods to do this, including manually noting what you wore each day in a journal or using an app that does it for you.

CARTIER

The closet purge!

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of outfits you want to wear daily. There is no magic number; it is all about choosing outfits that you will get good wear out of. Sort your outfits into categories and create a wearable wardrobe.

DERIN ODUGBESAN THOMAS

POLO

Create a colour palette

A colour palette is optional but quite essential when creating a capsule wardrobe. After wearing 30 outfits for 30 days, you will discover which colours you prefer to wear more frequently. These can be added to your colour palette reference guide for future purchases.

Shop your closet

When you feel the desire to shop, glance through your closet and try to persuade yourself to wear something you haven’t worn in a long time. If you don’t feel confident or beautiful, getting rid of it is okay. JOSEPH AMINA MUADDI

AWAKE MODE

Shop with purpose

Life is too short to stress over what we have or don’t have in our wardrobes. Instead invest more in other things. Encourage yourself to repeat outfits more often and become intentional beings. If you don’t already have clothes that make you feel good, plan to get them.
