Breaking the Silence

In all my years of hearing countless stories of women—young and old—diagnosed with breast cancer, I can only recall one instance of a man being diagnosed. Yes, one man. And even though I’ve read many times about the possibility of men getting breast cancer, when heard about that one case, it was still a shock.

And that’s the thing about breast cancer and men. It’s so universally perceived as a “woman’s disease” that men hardly ever consider that they could be at risk. The truth is that breast cancer is rare in men but not impossible. The statistics might show one in a thousand or even a million, but that doesn’t make it any less significant. Men are simply not aware, and that silence can be dangerous.

So today, instead of advocating for women only, let’s take a moment to speak to the men. Yes, guys—this one’s for you. Breast cancer may not be something you think about often, but it’s important to be aware. Yup, the chances might be slim, but a little awareness can go a long way. Breaking the Silence: Why Men Need to Talk About Breast Cancer touches on why it’s important for men to know about this disease and how they can protect themselves. Early detection isn’t just a woman’s game.

Banke Kuku’s Oceans

Sustainability is taking centre stage in Banke Kuku’s latest collection, Oceans, as the internationally recognised fashion designer continues to weave her signature narrative through fashion. Known for her vibrant designs and rich storytelling, Banke Kuku, affectionately referred to as Printess Banke, has set out to use fashion as a force for good, bringing attention to environmental issues—particularly the need to protect our oceans.

Following the success of her nature-inspired Eden collection in 2023, which was an ode to the beauty of Earth’s flora, Oceans delves deeper into nature, this time drawing on the breathtaking yet fragile marine ecosystem. The collection, which features marine-inspired prints of coral reefs, sea shells, and even shrimps, is designed to evoke admiration for the sea’s beauty and a pressing awareness of the need for its preservation.

“With Oceans, I wanted to bring attention to the vast beauty of our marine ecosystems and the urgent need for their protection. Our oceans are vital to life on Earth, and through fashion, I hope to spark a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the natural world,” Banke Kuku said during an exclusive press conference. “Fashion is a powerful storytelling tool, and I want to use my designs to create awareness and inspire positive action.”

This collection marks an evolution in Banke’s journey as a designer. The deep blues and seafoam greens she uses to mirror the serenity and depth of the ocean, paired with fluid silhouettes reminiscent of the ocean’s movement, reflect her ability to merge fashion with advocacy seamlessly. Each piece in Oceans is a celebration of both African heritage and the delicate beauty of marine life.

BREAKING THE SILENCE:

WHY MEN NEED TO TALK ABOUT BREAST CANCER

When we think of breast cancer, most people picture women. It’s understandable since the overwhelming majority of cases occur in women. But here’s something many overlook: men can develop breast cancer, too. It might be rare, but it’s real—and it’s deadly if left undiagnosed and untreated.

The fact that men don’t typically discuss this issue may be one of the biggest obstacles to early detection and successful treatment. It’s time to start breaking the silence and getting real about breast cancer in men because when it comes to cancer, waiting until it’s too late simply isn’t an option.

Why

Do Men Develop Breast Cancer?

Like women, men have breast tissue, even though it’s much smaller in comparison. In some cases, that tissue can develop into breast cancer. While breast cancer in men accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases, it still affects around 1 in 100,000 men annually. For these men, ignorance isn’t bliss—it’s a gamble with their lives. Many men are unaware that they can even get breast cancer, which is part of the reason why the diagnosis often comes late. There’s also the cultural stigma and reluctance to seek help, especially when dealing with something many perceive as a “woman’s disease.” But breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, and early detection remains the key to survival for both men and women.

The Symptoms to Watch Out For

The symptoms of breast cancer in men are often similar to those in women. The problem is that most men don’t expect to experience these symptoms, so they tend to ignore them or chalk them up to something less serious. Here’s what men need to pay attention to:

• A lump in the breast tissue: The most common sign of male breast cancer is a lump or thickening in the breast area, usually painless but not always.

• Changes to the skin on the breast: This can include redness, dimpling, or puckering. In some cases, the skin may appear scaly or irritated.

• Nipple changes: Any inversion (turning inward), discharge (especially if it’s bloody), or other abnormalities around the nipple should be checked out by a healthcare professional immediately.

• Swollen lymph nodes: Lymph nodes under the arm or around the collarbone may become swollen if cancer has spread.

These symptoms can easily be dismissed or mistaken for something else, like a muscle strain or a cyst. But if you or a loved one experiences any of these signs, it’s crucial to get them checked out by a doctor as soon as possible.

The Risk Factors

sarily mean a man will develop the disease. Still, awareness is essential, and here’s what men should know:

1. Age: Most male breast cancer cases are diagnosed in men between the ages of 60 and 70. That said, it’s not impossible for younger men to develop the disease, so vigilance is important at any age.

2. Family history: Men with a family history of breast cancer (in either men or women) are at an elevated risk, especially if a close relative like a mother or sister has been affected.

3. Genetic mutations: The BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations that are linked to breast cancer in women also affect men. Men with these mutations are more likely to develop breast cancer, along with other cancers like prostate and pancreatic cancer.

4. Radiation exposure: Men who have been exposed to radiation therapy, especially in the chest area, may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life.

5. Hormonal imbalances: Conditions that cause higher-thannormal levels of estrogen, like liver disease or hormone therapy for prostate cancer, can increase the risk of breast cancer in men.

The Importance of Early Detection

One of the most troubling aspects of male breast cancer is how late the diagnosis often comes. Many men only seek medical help after the cancer has advanced to later stages, making treatment more difficult and the prognosis poorer.

Early detection of male breast cancer offers the best chance for successful treatment. This is why regular self-exams, awareness of family history, and routine conversations with healthcare providers are so vital. Men should be encouraged to get a professional opinion on any unusual symptoms, just as women are urged to get regular mammograms and breast checks.

Breaking the Silence: How to Start the Conversation

Conditions that cause higherthan-normal levels of estrogen, like liver disease or hormone therapy for prostate cancer, can increase the risk of breast cancer in men

1. Stay on Top of the Trends (but Add Your Own Twist)

Fashion week is the birthplace of trends, and it’s easy to get swept up in the new looks designers put forward.

But here’s the catch: while it’s great to be on trend, it’s even better when you add your personal flair to it.

Do: Experiment with bold colours or silhouettes you wouldn’t normally wear. Challenge yourself to try something out of your comfort zone.

Don’t: Blindly copy a runway look. You don’t need to wear head-to-toe one designer to be stylish—fashion is about interpretation!

2. Build a Capsule Wardrobe for Versatility

The best way to stay stylish without feeling overwhelmed by trends is to build a capsule collection—a small group of essentials that can be mixed and matched. Focus on quality over quantity, and make sure your pieces are versatile.

Do: Invest in staple pieces that will carry you through multiple seasons.

Don’t: Splurge on items that you’ll only wear once. Fashion should be sustainable, and fast trends lead to waste (both in your closet and for the environment).

3. Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time

Nothing says fashion fail like lastminute panic dressing. Whether you’re attending an event, planning content for your social channels, or just wanting to look fab while shopping, plan ahead.

Do: Try different combinations in advance. A pre-planned outfit that fits well and feels comfortable will always outshine a rushed last-minute option.

Don’t: Rely on trends alone. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s going to work for your body type, so focus on cuts and styles that make you feel fabulous.

The stigma surrounding male breast cancer needs to be addressed head-on. There’s no shame in having breast tissue, just as there’s no shame in acknowledging that men, too, can develop breast cancer. By talking openly about these risks, symptoms, and the importance of early detection, we can start to shift the narrative and save lives.

Men’s health issues, particularly when it comes to cancer, need to be part of everyday conversations—among families, friends, and doctors. Education and awareness are the first steps toward removing the stigma and encouraging men to take their health seriously.

Treatment and Recovery

The treatment options for men with breast cancer are similar to those for women, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. However, the effectiveness of treatment depends heavily on how early the cancer is detected.

Support systems are critical during and after treatment. Men with breast cancer may feel isolated because of the lack of conversation around the topic, but connecting with others— through support groups or therapy—can make all the difference in the recovery process.

4. Be Bold, But Stay Comfortable Fashion season is a celebration, so it’s the time to get a little daring with your outfits. However, there’s a fine line between standing out and being uncomfortable. No one wants to be that person pulling at a too-tight skirt or regretting the sky-high heels halfway through the day.

Do Take fashion risks that make you feel powerful and confident. A statement jacket or a standout bag can do wonders for your mood.

Don’t: Sacrifice comfort for the sake of a trend. If it doesn’t feel right, it won’t look right, and your discomfort will show.

5. Get the Best of the Shows (Even From Afar)

Can’t make it to the tents? No worries! Virtual showrooms and live streams are everywhere these days. You can still get the best of the season’s fashion right from your sofa. Engage with designers and stylists on social media, follow fashion bloggers for updates, and participate in discus-

sions around the shows.

Do: Take full advantage of virtual fashion weeks. Designers are making their collections more accessible than ever, so tune in and soak up the inspiration.

Don’t: Feel left out if you’re not in the thick of it. Fashion is global now, and your style can still shine from anywhere.

6. Network and Have fun! Fashion season is more than just clothes—it’s a time to connect with other fashion lovers, creators, and professionals. Whether making new friends at a show or exchanging style tips online, your connections can inspire your next big fashion move. Do: Attend events (virtual or inperson) and network! Engage with people whose style and ideas resonate with you.

CHARLES ODII LEADING

SMEDAN

At the heart of Nigeria’s entrepreneurial landscape, a revolution is underway—one that’s poised to redefine the future of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the nation. At the helm of this transformative wave is Charles Odii, the dynamic CEO and Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Since assuming office on October 13, 2023, Odii has been a whirlwind of innovation and advocacy, igniting initiatives that have already created 20,000 jobs and facilitated over 11 billion naira in funding for SMEs.

Central to his mission is the ‘GROW Nigerian’ strategic blueprint—a visionary plan aimed at enhancing local production, meeting domestic demand, and propelling Nigerian products onto the global stage. “GROW stands for Guidance, Resources, Opportunities, and Workforce Support, encapsulating the essential elements SMEs need to flourish’’, he says. Under this strategy, SMEDAN targets eight high-potential sectors, with fashion and textile taking centre stage through the “Wear Nigerian” initiative. He recently hosted the largest MSME Conference in Nigeria at the State Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, bringing together thousands of small businesses for empowerment through exhibitions, masterclasses, and pitch competitions.

In this interview, we’re not just meeting a CEO— we are exploring his passion for entrepreneurship, his vision for the future of SMEs in Nigeria, and what keeps him inspired to push the boundaries of innovation.

You have an impressive background in media communications and entrepreneurship. How did your journey lead you to becoming the CEO of SMEDAN?

It was a predictable yet remarkable progression. As noted, had done an impressive amount of work promoting entrepreneurship and supporting entrepreneurs in Nigeria and across Africa. founded SME100Africa due to my enduring belief in the power of entrepreneurship to transform a nation. We organised events to showcase talented entrepreneurs and support them in bringing their innovations to market. We also met with government stakeholders to advocate for favourable policies and a friendly business environment. These engagements and expansive network, comprising prominent private and public actors, placed me on the radar, and am grateful to have received the confidence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as the sixth Director-General/CEO of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). I’m also grateful to Thisday style as remember eight years ago, precisely on August 21st 2016, we had spotlighted some young entrepreneurs in Nigeria who were doing phenomenal things and contributing to socioeconomic development in Nigeria under the age of 25, and Thisday style helped us to amplify the storytelling.

Rural industrialisation is a key focus for you. What unique challenges have you encountered while driving this initiative, and how are you overcoming them?

Our infrastructure deficit is significant and requires substantial investment. We are actively engaging local and international partners to

invest in production facilities closer to raw material sources across various sectors. However, this requires supporting infrastructure like quality roads, electricity, internet, healthcare and more, which directly impact production costs. As a government agency, SMEDAN manages 23 Industrial Development Centers (IDCs) nationwide, many located in rural areas. Our goal is to create jobs, develop technical expertise and eradicate poverty, but these IDCs need revitalisation to achieve rural industrialisation. We’ve begun seeking partnerships to revitalise these IDCs and make them viable. We recently partnered with UNDP to solarise our IDC in Idu, Abuja, where we have established a garment and textile hub equipped with over 100 industrial sewing machines, embroidery machines, and other modern equipment. We also have furniture workshops, recycling and packaging/branding workshops and warehouses, all with modern and functional equipment.

SMEDAN’s ‘Wear Nigerian’ initiative highlights the fashion and textile industry. What excites you the most about the future of Nigerian fashion?

I’m most excited about its vast potential for growth, job creation, and cultural export. We have local fashion brands that have built an impressive customer base in countries worldwide. The quality of their products is indistinguishable from that of high-end brands. Indeed, many of our fashion brands have integrated into the global value chain. This is why at SMEDAN, as one of our GROW Nigerian imperatives, we’ve chosen the fashion and textile industry as a key area of focus. Our goal is to increase support for fashion entrepreneurs to produce creative pieces at

scale. We also want to encourage more Nigerians, including the elite, to proudly wear Nigerian brands. It gives me great satisfaction to see the faces of foreign partners light up when they compliment my outfits, including suits, and realise a Nigerian fashion brand makes them. We now have a GROW Nigerian gift box featuring fashion items from some of our most innovative fashion SMEs, which we distribute to stakeholders to promote patronage. I personally carry cards from these brands and happily distribute them at events. This sector can deliver jobs, increase our GDP, and enhance our soft power in Africa and globally.

You’ve facilitated over 11 billion naira in funding for SMEs. What advice would you give small business owners seeking to secure funding?

They should formalise their business. One of the challenges I’ve encountered as DG of SMEDAN is that many SMEs lack the structure to absorb formal funding. Many still operate informally, unregistered, with poor bookkeeping, and unable to clearly demonstrate their size and growth potential. Many conduct business transactions with their personal accounts, complicating the process of establishing their credit history. These factors affect their ability to access finance. Our 2024 informal economy report with Moniepoint revealed this. I understand that the fear and discouraging factor with registration is taxation. Thankfully, the government has granted SMEs exemptions. We are working with the Taiwo Oyedele-led Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee to eliminate nuisance taxes that deter SMEs and cause disaffection. We are engaging banks and other financial organisations to provide affordable finance to SMEs, including single-digit interest-rate loans. However, the impact of this can only be felt if SMEs are able to absorb the funds. We are working with partners to address the formalisation problem. We want to streamline the process and onboard SMEs directly in their markets and other operational domains. We are partnering with all relevant stakeholders, including local cooperatives and other clusters. I also advise them to join an association or a cooperative. That way, they can get some help for business growth and expansion.

on SMEs, where SMEDAN serves as the Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Vice President, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima GCON. SMEDAN invests in Common Facility Centers to reduce production costs. For example, tailors and furniture makers at our IDC in Idu, Abuja, benefit from discounted rates on equipment, maintenance, power, and other resources. Additionally, we forge strategic partnerships to streamline regulations and lower operational costs. We are working with agencies such as CAC, NAFDAC, and others to support SMEs. Our recent partnership with NIPOST and GIG Logistics provides SMEs with discounted nationwide shipping.

As someone who champions women’s entrepreneurship, what specific steps are you taking to ensure women are well-represented in the Nigerian business landscape?

As the team lead at SMEDAN, I established the Women and Youth Unit and mandated a minimum of 40% representation of women in all our agency interventions and programs. We have empowered the Unit to engage partners and mobilise resources to expand our programs targeted at women, such as the Women in Self Employment Program (WISEP program), which provides support to self-employed women. We are also working with local stakeholders and traditional institutions to address harmful beliefs and social actions that hinder women’s access to entrepreneurship opportunities. We have also begun our accelerator program for female entrepreneurs, empowering them with all the guidance, resources, opportunities, and workforce support they need to thrive in Nigeria. Also, we have established the women-owned micro business fund (WOMB), empowering female-owned business owners with financial resources for scale and expansion.

General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, who discussed streamlining export procedures for SMEs. We also had representatives from the FIRS discuss taxation. These issues are of serious concern to SMEs, and the event not only shed light on them but also helped identify actionable steps we will follow up on. The impact of SME exhibitions and Masterclasses has been phenomenal. We have small businesses now protecting themselves because they attended the masterclass on intellectual property at the event. We have small businesses now earning more because they attended the Google masterclass.

Within the conference, we also hosted the Business Development Service Providers (BDSP) summit. These are certified professionals who we have tasked with the responsibility of upskilling one million small businesses with us in the next 12 months. This impact will revolutionise the small business Ecosystem in Nigeria.

What role do partnerships with international organisations like Mastercard and UNDP play in strengthening the SME ecosystem in Nigeria?

These partnerships are crucial to our efforts to build SME capacity, increase resource access, and provide tailored solutions. We recently received support from UNDP to solarise our IDC in Idu, ensuring an uninterrupted 24/7 energy supply for SMEs operating there. We are partnering with Mastercard to provide payment solutions and innovation support to small businesses, especially those in the digital economy. Both partners also supported the 2024 National MSME Conference, which became the largest and most significant gathering of actors and stakeholders in Nigeria’s SME ecosystem.

At SMEDAN, we are preparing SMEs for this change and future disruptions.

We’re working with partners like Google to equip them with digital skills, tools, and resources necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital economy. Our goal is to empower Nigerian SMEs to leverage technology for efficiency, innovation, and global competitiveness.

What motivates you daily, and how do you balance your personal life and high-powered career?

What motivates me daily is the knowledge that my work at SMEDAN directly impacts the lives of millions of Nigerian entrepreneurs and creates opportunities for economic growth and empowerment. To maintain balance, I prioritise self-care. I make time for loved ones, engage in hobbies, and seek mentorship from peers who understand the demands of leadership.

How do you measure success as SMEDAN’s CEO, and what legacy would you like to leave behind?

Success for me would be leaving behind a data-driven agency that has democratised access to finance, markets, and technology for SMEs. One that has institutionalised a culture of innovation, datadriven decision-making, and continuous learning. And an agency that successfully inspired a new generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs to drive economic growth and development.

Looking ahead, what are your long-term visions for SMEDAN, and how do you plan to continue shaping the future of Nigerian entrepreneurship?

Your passion for small business advocacy is evident. What are the most pressing issues facing Nigerian SMEs today, and how is SMEDAN addressing them?

Access to finance is a major hurdle for SMEs, partly due to a lack of formalisation. This is compounded by high production costs, infrastructure deficits, and complex regulations. To address these challenges, SMEDAN is working on multiple fronts. We provide grants and resources through programs like the Conditional Grant Scheme (CGS), One Local Government One Product (OLOP), and National Business Skills Development Initiative (NBSDI). We’re also collaborating with banks and state governments to offer dedicated SME funding with single-digit interest rates. This effort has already yielded over 11 billion naira in counterpart funding.

We also task state governments and relevant bodies to create business-friendly environments for SMEs, particularly through infrastructure investments. To encourage progress, we’ve implemented an assessment framework and publicly recognised best-performing states. This fosters healthy competition and the adoption of beneficial ideas and programs. We do this through the National Council

You recently organised Nigeria’s largest MSME conference. What were the standout moments for you, and what impact do you hope this event has?

The pitch competition, which got nearly 4000 entries nationwide, and ultimately produced finalists at the conference who won over 10 million naira in grants. It was a reaffirmation of our stance that the country possesses so many innovative businesses and welldriven entrepreneurs who must be supported to grow. We also had a keynote panel that featured the Honorable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite; Chairman of Metis Capital Partners, Hakeem Belo-Osagie; President of the Global Entrepreneurship Network, Jonathan Ortmans; and the Cluster Coordinator of GIZ in Nigeria, Markus Wauschkuhn. I moderated the panel, and the contributions, which touched on various issues affecting SME development in Nigeria, were insightful and informative for the attending SMEs. We also signed a partnership agreement with the Entrepreneurship Development Center, Pan Atlantic University, to train and mentor 10,000 women for free.

The event brought together government and private sector stakeholders to identify bottlenecks and foster collaboration for SME growth and development. Our export panel featured the Comptroller-

How has your background in media communications influenced your leadership style at SMEDAN?

I practice a “leave no one behind” strategy, which prioritises inclusion through adequate information dissemination. Internally, we have revived and reformed our communication channels, adopting technological solutions where possible to ensure that every staff member is well-informed about the steps we are taking to reposition and grow the SME ecosystem.

We recently held a strategy retreat, which brought together all staff members for the first time in over 20 years since the agency’s establishment. Previously, the retreat was reserved for leadership, but I changed this trend as a communications professional who understands how perception and inclusion shape action. We are now witnessing new levels of motivation within the team. Everyone feels valued, and rightly so.

You’re known for embracing technology to improve transparency and access at SMEDAN. How do you foresee technology shaping the future of SMEs in Nigeria?

It has already caused a radical shift in how we trade and interact.

We are very focused on our GROW Nigerian agenda. GROW is an acronym: G stands for Guidance, R stands for Resources, O stands for Opportunity, and W stands for workforce support. This is our theory of change for the SME ecosystem in Nigeria. We believe that with the right amount of guidance, resources, opportunities, and workforce support, all our SMEs in Nigeria can thrive. GROW Nigerian would now drill down to our priority sectors. Eat Nigerian: focusing on our agriculture value chain.

Wear Nigerian: supporting our Fashion, garment and Textile Industries

Visit Nigerian: Tourism and Hospitality

Produce Nigerian: We focus on manufacturing and production for our small-scale entrepreneurs.

Teach and Learn Nigerian: focusing on our Education Ecosystem

Watch and Listen: Nigerian Digital Media Economy

Patronise Nigerian: connecting Buyers to Sellers, especially those in the service industry.

Digitize and Innovate: focusing on Nigerian Innovation and the new tech economy.

We want to rebuild our production capacity and support our SMEs in meeting local demands and competing in foreign markets. strongly believe that achieving this will solve many of our current challenges.

12 NON-SEXUAL THINGS THAT ARE ACTUAL TURN-ONS FOR WOMEN

For many women, the real turn-ons are found in the thoughtful, charming, and subtle gestures that leave a lasting impression. Here are 12 non-sexual things that women genuinely find attractive.

1. Active Listening

Active listening, where a person makes an effort to engage in what you’re saying, respond thoughtfully, and ask follow-up questions, can be incredibly alluring. It shows respect, interest, and a deeper connection.

2. A Sense of Humour

Nothing quite captures attention like the ability to make someone laugh. Humour lightens the mood and creates an instant bond. A man who can effortlessly make a woman laugh without trying too hard is instantly magnetic. Bonus points if you both share the same sense of humour!

3. Good Hygiene

This might seem basic, but trust me, it’s often overlooked. Fresh breath, clean nails, and a subtle cologne—these things go a long way. Taking care of yourself shows that you respect your own body, and that’s a huge turn-on. There’s just something about a man who smells amazing.

4. Thoughtfulness

Thoughtful gestures—like remembering her favourite colour or sending a random “thinking of you” text—are small acts that can make a huge difference. These little moments of consideration make women feel valued.

5. Confidence (Not Arrogance)

Confidence is undeniably sexy, but knowing the difference between confidence and arrogance is important. Confidence means being comfortable in your own skin, whereas arrogance is about trying to prove something. The quiet confidence that comes from being secure in who you are is incredibly appealing.

8 REASONS WHY LUXURY HANDBAGS ARE WORTH EVERY PENNY

6. Intelligence

Intellectual conversations can be a major turn-on. Being knowledgeable, well-read, and able to hold a stimulating conversation shows depth and character. It doesn’t mean you need a PhD, but having the ability to discuss a range of topics with insight and curiosity is great.

7. Respect for Boundaries

Knowing when to give someone space and respecting boundaries shows maturity and is incredibly attractive. Whether it’s giving her time to unwind after a long day or respecting her independence, showing that you understand, and value boundaries can strengthen any relationship.

8. Emotional Intelligence

Being emotionally intelligent is about more than just understanding your own feelings; it’s about being

aware of others’ emotions and responding appropriately. It’s about empathy, kindness, and compassion, all of which create an environment where a woman feels safe and understood.

9 A Sense of Style

You don’t have to be a fashionista, but having a personal sense of style is undeniably attractive. It shows that you care about your appearance and take pride in how you present yourself. A well-dressed man—whether in casual or formal wear— can easily turn heads without even trying.

10. Being Good with Kids

There’s something irresistibly charming about a man who is comfortable around children. Whether it’s playing with nieces and nephews or being patient with kids in everyday situations, this warmth and care show a nurturing side that many women find endearing.

11. Supportive Attitude

A man who supports his partner’s dreams and ambitions is worth his weight in gold. Whether encouraging her to pursue her career goals or just being a reliable cheerleader in her life, this supportive energy shows that you’re not intimidated by her success—in fact, you celebrate it.

12. Vulnerability

There’s strength in showing vulnerability. Being open about your feelings, fears, and challenges can create a deeper connection. It shows that you trust her enough to share, and trust is a huge turn-on. Vulnerability is the gateway to intimacy—not just physically, but emotionally.

MURI AND KO: A THRILLING MIX OF CRIME, HUMOUR, AND UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIPS

Since her successes with movies like Breaded Life, Sista, Momiwa, etc, Biodun Stephen has become a household name in the Nigerian film industry.

In Muri and Ko, she takes audiences on a thrilling yet humorous ride through the unpredictable life of a petty thief who accidentally stumbles into a much larger criminal operation. The film, led by Kunle Remi in an uncharacteristically gritty role, shines a spotlight on the complexities of survival in the slums, loyalty, and the odd friendships that arise in the most unexpected circumstances.

PLOT SUMMARY

Kunle Remi plays Muri, a small-time hustler who survives by lifting purses and bags from the unsuspecting. His foray into petty crime takes a sharp turn when he’s introduced to the underground world of stealing and reselling car parts. What starts as a risky side hustle escalates when, on a routine job, Muri attempts to steal a car’s side mirror but ends up stealing an entire car instead. Things spiral further when he discovers a young boy named Cole (Ko) inside the stolen car.

The boy, a popular face of children’s beverages and cereals, is also the son of a reality TV star. After he was reported kidnapped, his parents offered a ten million naira reward to anyone with information as to his whereabouts. As various players become involved with everyone out to get the boy for personal gain, Muri becomes an unlikely protector. His relationship with Cole evolves into a partnership of necessity as they navigate a chaotic series of events that eventually lead them to the police.

WHAT WE LOVED

Performances

Kunle Remi delivers a standout performance. Known for his charming roles, he steps out of his comfort zone, embodying the rugged, streetwise Muri with unexpected finesse. His portrayal is gritty, raw, and, at times, deeply touching, particularly in scenes that explore Muri’s growing attachment to the boy and his sense of responsibility towards him.

Fiyinfoluwa Asenuga, in the role of Cole (Ko), also shines as the sharp-mouthed and witty “aje butter” who gives Muri more trouble than he signed up for. Their bromance held the movie together and was what kept the movie going as long as it did.

Other actors in the play include Bisola Aiyeola, Bukunmi Adeaga-ilori (Kiekie), Femi Jacobs, Bucci Franklin, Gloria Young, and many others.

Cinematography and Setting

The film makes excellent use of its locations, highlighting the contrasts between the slums and more upscale areas. The authenticity of the slum setting adds to the film’s grounded feel, painting a vivid picture of the world Muri inhabits. The cinematography is more than decent, enhancing the storytelling and tension throughout the film.

A Few Reservations

We recognise a similar plot of an unlikely kidnapper/ victim bonding in Ramsey Nouah’s Tokunbo, which was released on Netflix only a few weeks ago. However, they both follow the same path of poor resolutions, with both kidnappers seemingly going scot-free. Also, there was little to look forward to as the movie became a bore at some point, and we couldn’t wait for it to be over.

There was also hardly any chemistry between Bisola Aiyeola and Bucci Franklin, who played Cole’s mum and dad, respectively. Although their relationship wasn’t the film’s central focus, it was underdeveloped. The trauma of their son’s kidnapping was clearly meant to bring them closer, but the storyline felt rushed and lacked depth. However, we will maintain that although Muri and Ko might not be Biodun Stephen’s finest work, it offered an engaging mix of crime, humour, and unlikely friendships. The plot may have leaned on some familiar tropes, but the execution keeps things fresh and exciting.

In all, Biodun Stephen does a commendable job of balancing the film’s darker moments with humour and warmth. Again, it’s not a movie to take too seriously or expect much from, but you’ll definitely have moments you’ll enjoy.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT YOUR

HYPERPIGMENTATION?

Hyperpigmentation—a word many of us have heard but may not have paid much attention to until we noticed the uneven skin tone or dark patches stubbornly sticking around. Whether it’s post-inflammatory marks from acne, sunspots, or melasma, hyperpigmentation is one of those skin concerns that doesn’t care about age or skin type. So, the question is, what are you doing about it?

Let’s break it down.

Why Do We Get Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanin (the pigment responsible for our skin colour) is overproduced in certain areas of the skin. This can be triggered by a number of factors: sun exposure, hormonal changes, acne, or even certain medications. For some people, it’s genetic. For others, it’s a combination of lifestyle choices and environmental exposure. One thing is clear, though: treating hyperpigmentation requires patience, a solid skincare routine, and a little bit of knowledge about what works best for your skin.

Step 1: Sun Protection, Always Before we even talk about treatments, the golden rule of managing hyperpigmentation is preventing it from getting worse. And that, my friends, boils down to sunscreen. There’s no point in investing in expensive products if you aren’t diligent about protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays. SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum, and reapplication throughout the day are your best defenses.

Step 2: Time to Exfoliate (But Gently)

The urge to scrub away dark spots might be real, but aggressive exfoliation can worsen hyperpigmentation. The key is to gently remove dead skin cells while encouraging cell turnover. This is where alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic or lactic acid come into play. They work wonders for sloughing off the top layer of skin and revealing fresher, more even-toned skin underneath.

It’s important to note that not all exfoliants are created equal. While physical scrubs may feel satisfying, they can actually cause microtears in the skin, leading to inflammation and—you guessed it—more hyperpigmentation. Opt for chemical exfoliants instead, as they provide more controlled and even exfoliation.

Step 3: Brightening Ingredients to the Rescue

Now, let’s talk about ingredients that can specifically target those pesky dark spots. One of the most popular (and effective) is vitamin C. Known for its brightening properties, vitamin C fades existing pigmentation and prevents future dark spots from forming. It’s an antioxidant powerhouse that’s a must-have in any hyperpigmentation regimen.

Then there’s niacinamide, a form of vitamin

B3. This multi-tasking ingredient is beloved in the skincare world because it helps to lighten dark spots, reduce inflammation, and improve the skin’s barrier function. Think of it as your skin’s calm and steady friend, quietly working in the background to give you a more even complexion. And we can’t forget about retinoids, which are considered the gold standard for many skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation. Retinoids boost cell turnover, helping to fade dark spots over time while keeping your skin youthful. If you’re new to retinoids, start slow (once or twice a week) to avoid irritation.

Step 4: Targeted Treatments

Sometimes, a standard skincare routine isn’t enough, and that’s when you turn to targeted treatments. Over-the-counter serums and creams can be effective, but a visit to a dermatologist might be in order for more stubborn hyperpigmentation. Prescription-strength treatments like hydroquinone, kojic acid, or azelaic acid can provide more dramatic results when OTC products aren’t cutting it. Treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy can significantly reduce hyperpigmentation for those ready to invest. However, these options aren’t without risks—especially for people with darker skin tones—so it’s essential to seek out professionals experienced in treating your skin type.

Step 5: Patience and Consistency

Here’s the thing about hyperpigmentation: it didn’t show up overnight and won’t disappear overnight, either. One of the biggest challenges people face is sticking with a routine long enough to see results. Whether you’re using a brightening serum or undergoing laser treatments, consistency is key.

It’s easy to get frustrated when results aren’t immediate, but remember that skin care is a marathon, not a sprint. You’re playing the long game here, and the payoff will be worth it.

A Few Things to Avoid

As tempting as it may be to try every new product or DIY treatment you come across, be cautious. Ingredients like lemon juice or baking soda might be touted as miracle fixes, but they can damage your skin and worsen hyperpigmentation. Stick to tried-and-true ingredients and avoid anything too harsh or abrasive.
