GLENFIDDICH’S GRAND SLEEVES LAUNCH IN LAGOS: A BOLD CELEBRATION OF ITS MAVERICKS
Alongside being the top Single-malt whisky in town, one thing we have come to love about Glenfiddich is the brand’s ability to deliver precisely what it promises! The most recent case in point is the official launch of the Grand Sleeves, which took place recently at The Library Lagos, situated in Victoria Island.
torytime, guys. So earlier this year, somewhere in New York, think, I was casually walking down the grocery store aisle when a lady came up to me with a broad smile and said, “Kaykay! Hi! I know you.”Confused, stared back at her, desperately trying to place her face but coming up blank. So, did what any normal person would do—I admitted my confusion. “I’m so sorry,” said, “but I can’t seem to remember where we’ve met.” In that split second, my mind assumed she might know me from work, a casual industry acquaintance perhaps. But she quickly corrected me. “Oh no, we’ve never actually met. I know you from Instagram! You’re friends with so and so, and I always see your pictures in their posts.”
Of course, as any modern social creature would, immediately asked for her Instagram handle. Let’s be honest—these days, recognising people often means recalling their online persona. We are in an era where everyone is more likely to remember you as @SexyTee rather than your actual name, Tony. It’s the new normal. She shared her handle, and naturally, recognised it instantly. But when I looked at the actual person standing in front of me, couldn’t reconcile the two.
We exchanged polite hellos and goodbyes, but couldn’t resist taking a look at her Instagram page as soon as she walked away. And what did I find? A version of her so filtered and edited that it was barely recognisable compared to the person I’d just met. Sure, if I squinted and examined closely, I could spot hints of her features, but at a glance, it was like comparing two entirely different people.
And here’s the thing: This isn’t an isolated incident. Filters have become the new digital currency. Rarely do you see someone post an unedited photo. Self-expression used to be about your hair and makeup choices. Now, it extends to how you manipulate your image in the digital world. And why do we even do it?
The article How Instagram Filters Changed Beauty Culture— and Not for the Better is a thought-provoking read that talks about the psychological effects of our filter obsession, from selfesteem issues to mental health consequences. Are we ready to break free from this addiction? And more importantly, should we?
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not immune to this trend. I use filters, too—though perhaps not as heavily as some. And while I can’t say for sure if I’ll ever stop using them entirely, the conversation about their impact has certainly got me thinking. Maybe, like many things in life, it’s all about finding balance.
The runways this season have showcased such vibrant, breathtaking collections that if you weren’t already convinced to support indigenous fashion brands, you should be now. If you need a further nudge, look no further than Why You Should Shop Local: The Benefits of Supporting Emerging Nigerian Designers. Trust me, it’s a compelling case for celebrating the incredible talent we have right here at home. November is here, and can hardly contain my excitement. The end-of-year festivities are right around the corner, and while it’s been a challenging year, there’s still so much to be grateful for. God has indeed been faithful, and we’ve made it through. So, here’s to a month full of blessings,

Design Week Lagos 2024
Design Week Lagos (DWL), Africa’s premier showcase of design brilliance, wrapped up five days of exhilarating exhibitions, conversations, and creativity that captured the hearts of Lagos and the attention of global design enthusiasts. Bringing together designers, innovators, and visionaries worldwide, this year’s festival celebrated cutting-edge design and underscored its vital role in driving Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Held at the LiveSpot Entertarium, DWL kicked off on October 22 with an exclusive VIP opening featuring inspiring speeches, networking sessions, and dynamic showcases.
With renowned speakers like British artist Benedict Radcliffe and Nigeria’s Honourable Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa, attendees engaged in enlightening discussions on themes like “D” signing Economic Growth” and “F” steering Collaboration within the Built Environment.” These conversations celebrated the unique intersections of design, innovation, and community impact, further enriching Lagos’ Creative sphere.
The grand finale on October 27 was the National Design and Innovation Competition, an event that honoured the creativity, dedication, and vision of Nigeria’s brightest emerging designers. Finalists presented their innovative solutions to a panel of esteemed judges, vying for prestigious awards and opportunities to take their projects to new heights. Reflecting on this year’s resounding success, Titi Ogufere remarked, “D” sign Week Lagos 2024 has proven, once again, the transformative potential of design. We are honoured by the support of our patrons and partners and optimistic about the growth and impact of Nigeria’s sign and innovation ecosystem.”
Glenfiddich’s Grand Sleeves Launch in Lagos: A Bold
Celebration of its Mavericks
Alongside being the top Single-malt whisky in town, one thing we have come to love about Glenfiddich is the brand’s ability to deliver precisely what it promises! The most recent case in point is the official launch of the Grand Sleeves, which took place on October 20th at The Library Lagos, situated in Victoria Island.
The ever-charismatic Tomike Adeoye hosted the launch and brought life to the evening with a dash of bubbly energy that teased smiles out of all present, including Glenfiddich’s remarkable collaborators: Mr Eazi, Nancy Isime, Ifeanyi Nwune & William Chechet. Together with Glenfiddich, they created limited-edition sleeves that paid tribute to the bold presence of Nigeria’s rich heritage in music, art, fashion and modern pop culture across the global scene.
And what better way to start an event of this calibre than with exquisite cocktails infused with the very sleeves being launched? Guests were greeted with Glenfiddich-infused cocktails that were as vibrant as Nancy Isime’s purple-themed 15-year-old sleeve, as luscious as Ifeanyi Nwune’s artistic 12-year-old bottle and as exotic as Mr. Eazi’s afrobeat-inspired 18-yearold sleeve.
As the night unfolded, each collaborator was invited to the stage to share the story behind their limitededition sleeves.
Aside from the moving commentaries delivered by the collaborators, Glenfiddich treated guests to show-stopping entertainment from the very beginning. Guests were entertained with an Afrofuturistic dance choreography by The Library performers and a mesmerising Hula Hoops act featuring dazzling, light-studded hoops twirled and sparkled in the spotlight with each act. That was not all. The DJs—DJ Baggio, DJ Fisayo, and the duo HandiXWanni—delivered thrilling performances that seamlessly blended Amapiano, Afrobeats, and international pop hits in a headymphony.
Now, let’s talk about the food. The menu was a feast for the senses, featuring mouth-watering Prawn tempura, succulent Beef sirloin, tender pan-seared lamb racks, and the ultimate indulgence of warm mulva pudding topped with vanilla ice cream—an actual dining experience fit for royalty.
Cheers to a Decade: Lagos Cocktail Week 2024 Celebrates 10 Years of Mixology, Culture & Innovation
Lagos Cocktail Week (LCW), Africa’s premier cocktail festival, wrapped up its milestone 10th anniversary with resounding success from October 11 to 18, 2024. Themed “Innovation, Culture & Passion,” the event celebrated a decade of remarkable growth in African cocktail culture and continued to advance the craft of mixology across the continent. Attendees were treated to an extraordinary lineup of events, hands-on seminars, and exclusive training sessions that highlighted the best of the cocktail industry.
Founded by Lara Rawa, CEO of Eventi Cocktails, Lagos Cocktail Week has evolved into a vital platform to showcase Nigeria’s vibrant cocktail scene. Rawa’s vision was to establish the cocktail industry as an essential part of Nigeria’s beverage landscape. Anchored on three core pillars—Education, Information, and Entertainment—LCW brings together cocktail enthusiasts, industry professionals, and brands for a unique experience each year.
The 7-day event began on November 11th, featuring a popular bar hop where top restaurants curated signature menus for cocktail lovers to enjoy.
1. Rotate, Don’t Repeat
It’s tempting to wear your favourite items repeatedly, especially if they make you feel confident and comfortable. However, wearing the same pieces regularly can lead to quicker wear and tear. The key here is rotation. Make it a habit to rotate your wardrobe so that every piece gets a break. It’s like shopping your closet—without spending a dime!
2. Handle with Care (Labels Matter!)
When it comes to laundry, taking the time to read labels can be the difference between a piece lasting a year or lasting five. Labels contain specific washing instructions for a reason. High temperatures, bleach, or incorrect cleaning cycles can damage fabrics, causing them to fade or lose shape. Separate your delicates, hand wash certain items if needed, and make friends with cold water. Trust me, your clothes will thank you for treating them like the treasures they are.
3. The Air Drying Secret
HOW TO EXTEND THE LIVES OF YOUR CLOTHES AND ACCESSORIES
If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we want our favourite clothes and accessories to stay fabulous for as long as possible. Whether it’s that pair of jeans that fits just right or the handbag that gets compliments every time, our wardrobe staples deserve some TLC. Extending the lives of these pieces isn’t just good for our wallets—it’s a sustainable choice that benefits the planet, too. Let’s talk about how to get the most out of your wardrobe without sacrificing style or comfort.
HOW TO NAIL THE TREND OF MIXING PRINTS
The dryer might be convenient, but it’s not your clothes’ best friend. High heat can break down fibres, causing shrinkage, fading, and general wear. Whenever possible, skip the dryer and opt for air drying instead. Use a clothesline or a drying rack to let garments breathe and dry naturally. It may take longer, but it’s worth it. Plus, you’ll avoid that dreaded moment when your favourite shirt suddenly becomes a size too small.
4. Spot Clean for Longevity
Instead of tossing an item in the laundry basket after a single wear, consider spot cleaning. A tiny dab of gentle detergent and some water can easily remove minor stains or spills. This method minimises the frequency of full washes, which can be hard on clothes. Spot cleaning is especially handy for pieces like blazers, dresses, or delicate blouses— anything that doesn’t need to be washed every time you wear it.
5. Invest in Quality Storage
Properly storing your clothes can extend their lifespan. Invest in goodquality hangers for jackets, dresses, and blouses—padded hangers for delicate items and sturdy wooden ones for jackets. Consider fabric storage bags for seasonal clothes to keep dust and pests away. And keep an eye out for those pesky moths—lavender sachets or cedar blocks can keep your closet smelling fresh while protecting your favourite wool items.
6.
Let’s
extend the life of your shoes, clean them regularly, and if they’re leather, condition them every few months to keep the material supple. Store them with shoe trees if possible, which helps maintain their shape. For handbags, stuffing them with tissue paper (acid-free, if you’re being fancy) will prevent them from sagging and losing shape over time.
7. Repair, Don’t Replace
Learning basic repair skills can transform your wardrobe. A popped button? Sew it back on! A small rip in a seam? Grab a needle and thread, or take it to a tailor. Shoes wearing down? A cobbler can breathe new life into them for a fraction of the price of a new pair. Knowing when and how to repair your clothes saves you money and adds a sense of pride in taking care of what you own.
8. Mind the Environment
Where you wear your clothes matters; certain environments can cause more wear, such as mud, rain, sand, and sun. If you’re heading to the beach, leave your favourite suede sandals at home. If it’s going to rain, that leather bag might not be the best choice. Protecting your clothes from harsh environments helps reduce damage, stains, and fading, keeping your pieces in top condition longer.
9. Find a Tailor You Love
A well-fitting garment looks good and is less likely to suffer damage from constant pulling or adjusting. Tailoring can extend the life of your clothes by making them fit you perfectly. Whether it’s taking in a waist, shortening a hem, or adjusting a sleeve, a tailor can make an off-the-rack item feel custom-made. And if something’s not quite right anymore? Don’t toss it—tailors can often work magic and help you fall in love with it all over again.
Mixing prints has been one of fashion’s most daring challenges. When done right, it’s pure magic—a head-turning testament to your style prowess. But if you’ve ever tried it, you know just how easily things can go wrong. There’s a fine line between looking like a bold fashionista and, well, a walking Picasso painting gone awry. So, how do you master the art of mixing prints without feeling like you’re one more step away from a fashion disaster? Here’s your guide to rocking this trend with confidence and flair.
Trust Your Instincts but Follow the Mirror Test
Sometimes, fashion is about breaking the rules and trusting your gut. But before stepping out, always give yourself a good once-over in the mirror. If the outfit doesn’t make you feel like a million bucks, adjust until it does. Confidence is key when you’re experimenting with bold trends. If you feel fabulous, you’ll look fabulous.
Play with Patterns in the Same Color Family For a beginner-proof approach, stick to prints in the same colour palette. For example, a navy polka dot blouse paired with a navy and white striped skirt makes a subtle yet striking statement. Keeping a consistent colour scheme is a no-fail way to maintain visual harmony while experimenting with prints. It’s like creating a piece of art—your colours should complement, not compete.
Use Stripes as Your Starting Point Stripes are the ultimate “gateway print” and mix beautifully with almost anything. They’re simple, elegant, and less visually aggressive compared to some other patterns. Try combining a striped shirt with a floral or plaid piece. The result? Effortlessly balanced and Instagram-ready. Remember, stripes are your best friend in the world of print mixing.
Start with Neutrals
When you’re just dipping your toes into the wild world of print-mixing, keep one element neutral. Think black and white stripes paired with a neutral leopard print. Neutrals ground the outfit and create a safe foundation for you to build upon. You’ll look chic and confident without feeling overwhelmed by your choices.
Accessories Take
Center Stage
Accessories are no longer an afterthought in men’s fashion— they’re a focal point.
From chunky jewelry to stylish hats and bags, accessories are being used to make bold statements. Layered necklaces, statement rings, and even earrings are becoming commonplace. Brands are offering a variety of options that cater to different styles, whether you prefer minimalist designs or more extravagant pieces.
Bags are also a significant trend, with crossbody bags, totes, and even clutches appearing in men’s collections. It’s a practical and stylish way to carry essentials, and with designers offering a range of designs, there’s something for everyone.
Oversized Outerwear
If one thing’s certain, it’s that oversized outerwear isn’t going anywhere. The oversized trend has been dominant in recent seasons and continued to rule the runway. This year, however, there’s been a twist: it’s not just about being oversized—it’s about structure. Designers are using oversized silhouettes to create structured, architectural looks that add a sense of sophistication to even the most casual outfits. We’re talking about oversized blazers with broad shoulders, exaggerated sleeves, and jackets that nod to 80s nostalgia. This trend is all about making a statement, but it’s done in an approachable way.
Statement Footwear
While clothes are certainly a big part of the season’s trends, shoes have taken on a life of their own.
Statement footwear is everywhere, from chunky combat boots and bold sneakers to sleek loafers with intricate detailing. Shoes this season aren’t just about complementing an outfit; they’re often the focal point.
Androgynous Fashion
The concept of androgyny in fashion isn’t new, but it’s taken a front seat this season, especially in menswear. Designers have found fresh ways to incorporate traditionally feminine elements into men’s clothing, showing that style knows no gender. This season, we’re seeing more men embracing skirts, tailored blouses, and softer silhouettes that might once have been considered ‘feminine.’
From floral prints to softer cuts and flowing fabrics, the trend has added a refreshing and timely layer of freedom in self-expression.
WHAT’S NEW IN MEN’S FASHION?
Top Trends To Watch
Fashion season is upon us, and the runways have been buzzing with energy, setting the stage for what’s trending in men’s fashion. With every season, designers push the boundaries of style, showing us not only what’s in vogue but also subtly hinting at the future of fashion. This year, the focus was on versatility, daring fabrics, and the continuous blurring of gender lines, proving that fashion doesn’t need a label.
Color Pop: Bright and Bold
Gone are the days when men’s fashion was limited to neutral colours and subdued tones. This season, we’re seeing a vibrant splash of color on the runway. Designers are embracing bold shades— from electric blues and neon greens to fiery reds and sunshine yellows. These colours are used unapologetically in full suits or even monochrome outfits that demand attention. If you’re hesitant about embracing bright colours head-to-toe, consider starting small with accessories. A vibrant scarf, a bold pair of shoes, or even a colorful hat can elevate a neutral outfit, letting you ease into the trend without stepping too far outside your comfort zone.
Mesh Tops
Mesh is having a major moment right now. From sheer tops to oversized netted sweaters, this fabric is breaking down traditional boundaries in menswear.
Designers have fully embraced it, making mesh the go-to fabric for men looking to add an edge to their wardrobe.
Mesh, however, isn’t just about baring skin—it’s about creating visual intrigue. The fabric plays with light and shadow, adding dimension to a look while allowing men to experiment with showing just a hint of skin. It’s a bold move but one that’s surprisingly versatile, offering an understated allure without trying too hard.
Tailoring Traditional tailoring has been reinvented this season, with designers opting for a more relaxed approach.
Gone are the stiff, restrictive suits of old. Instead, we’re seeing relaxed silhouettes that combine comfort with style. Trousers are looser, suit jackets are slightly oversized, and fabrics are softer, allowing for more movement.
Sustainable Fashion
Last but certainly not least, sustainability remains a driving force in men’s fashion.
Brands are increasingly incorporating eco-friendly materials, upcycling fabrics, and promoting slow fashion as they push towards a more sustainable future. This season, we’re seeing designers use recycled materials to create looks that are both stylish and environmentally friendly. The message is clear: fashion should be about quality, not quantity. And the best part? These sustainable pieces are crafted to last, making them a wise investment for any fashion-forward individual.
FOLAKE AKINDELE
25 YEARS OF TIFFANY AMBER
Even though you might not know the name Folake Akindele, you most certainly know the name Tiffany Amber, a brand synonymous with luxury and sophistication and one of Nigeria’s finest female-led fashion houses. For the past 25 years, Tiffany Amber has set trends and inspired countless young designers, turning the local fashion scene into a global conversation. And as the brand marks its silver jubilee, it does so the same year its founder, Folake Akindele, turns 50—a poetic milestone that speaks to her unwavering passion, resilience, and creative genius.
Folake Coker’s story is an extraordinary one. Born in Lagos and raised across Switzerland, England, and Scotland, she was introduced to a world of diversity and culture at a young age. Despite her journey through academia— qualifying as a lawyer with a master’s degree in Petroleum Law—her true calling was always fashion. In 1996, she took her first daring steps into the fashion world, designing a collection for herself upon her return to Nigeria to attend Law School. Two years later, in November 1998, Tiffany Amber was born, setting off a revolution in Nigerian fashion that would shape an industry and inspire a continent.
Over the years, Folake’s vision has expanded beyond traditional design to a full-fledged lifestyle brand. The Tiffany Amber Atelier, often described as the best designer space in Nigeria, is a testament to this evolution. The Atelier serves as the heartbeat of the Tiffany Amber brand, a space where dreams are designed and timeless pieces are brought to life.
Her accolades are as striking as her creations. In 2008, Folake broke new ground as the first African-based designer to showcase at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York, and she did so twice in a row. Her collections received rave reviews and put Nigeria’s fashion industry on the international map. By 2009, she had added two more lines under Tiffany Amber: TAN by Tiffany Amber, a diffusion line, and Folake Folarin, a couture line, embodying her iconic style while catering to a wider audience.
Her influence has also been recognised by global powerhouses. In 2012, when the late Franca Sozzani, the legendary Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia, visited Lagos, she was so impressed with Tiffany Amber that she invited Folake to participate in the Fashion for Development project. By 2013, Folake made history once again as the first African fashion designer to feature on the Forbes Women Power List, and she also received the prestigious Enterprise Award from the Women Inspiration and Enterprise (WIE) organisation.
Her influence extends beyond fashion and into mentorship and female empowerment. In 2014, to celebrate Tiffany Amber’s 15th anniversary, she launched the Women of Vision campaign in partnership with Diamond Woman. This platform has since become a guidepost for aspiring entrepreneurs, offering them support and inspiration from one of the industry’s most accomplished women.
Now, as Tiffany Amber celebrates 25 years of redefining African fashion and Folake herself celebrates her 50th birthday, the journey is far from over. She remains at the helm, as visionary and innovative as ever. In this exclusive sitdown she reflects on her achievements, the evolution of her brand, and the future of Nigerian fashion.
Folake, congratulations are in order! You’re hitting two remarkable milestones this year—turning 50 and Tiffany Amber turning 25. How does it feel to celebrate both at once?
Thank you! It feels surreal to celebrate two milestones that mean so much to me. Turning 50 alongside Tiffany Amber’s 25th anniversary feels like reaching the summit of a beautiful journey filled with challenges, growth, and incredible experiences. It’s a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to dream even bigger for the future.
You’ve spent half of your life building Tiffany Amber into what it is today. Personally and professionally, what has this incredible journey been like for you?
The journey has been extraordinary. It’s filled with as many lessons as it is with achievements. Personally, I’ve grown in resilience, patience, and vision. Professionally, Tiffany Amber has allowed me to push boundaries and help shape the narrative of African fashion on a global stage. This journey has been my life’s greatest work, and it’s shaped me in ways I could never have imagined.
When you first launched Tiffany Amber, what vision did you have in mind? How does that initial dream compare to what the brand has grown into today?
In the beginning, my vision for Tiffany Amber was to create a brand that celebrated the strength, elegance, and beauty of African women through fashion. Looking back, I’m proud to say that the brand has grown beyond my dreams, becoming a symbol of African luxury and authenticity. Tiffany Amber has evolved from just a label to a movement that speaks to women across the continent and beyond.
Tell us about your anniversary collection—what inspired it, and what do you hope it represents for Tiffany Amber at this 25-year mark?

Over the years, have you noticed any significant shifts in what Nigerian women want from fashion?
Absolutely. Nigerian women today are more discerning and aware of global trends, but they also want pieces that reflect their unique identity and heritage. There’s a stronger emphasis on quality, versatility, and authenticity. Fashion, for them, is about self-expression and empowerment.

What’s a typical day like for you, Folake? How do you keep your creative spark alive?
A typical day starts early, usually with a moment of reflection or meditation. My days are filled with meetings, design sessions, and connecting with my team. I keep my creativity alive by surrounding myself with beauty and constantly seeking inspiration, whether through travel, art or simply observing the world around me.
Tiffany Amber has always been about more than just clothes— it’s a statement. What message do you want your brand to send to the next generation of Nigerian women?
Tiffany Amber is a reminder to be unapologetically yourself. I want young Nigerian women to know that they are worthy of luxury, capable of greatness and that they can define their own success. Fashion can be a means to express their strength, elegance, and pride in who they are.
If you could go back and speak to your 25-year-old self, what do you think she’d say about the woman you’ve become today?
She’d probably be amazed at the journey, proud of the woman I’ve become, and maybe a little in awe of how far we’ve come. I think she’d be inspired to keep dreaming big and to trust that every step, every challenge, was worth it.
The Benefits of Supporting Emerging Nigerian Designers WHY YOU SHOULD SHOP LOCAL:
There’s something undeniably magical about wearing a piece of clothing crafted by the hands of someone in your community. And in a time when fast fashion has made its mark on nearly every continent, shopping local and supporting emerging Nigerian designers has become more than just a trend—it’s a movement.
If you’re yet to add locally-designed pieces to your wardrobe, you’re missing out on more than just incredible fashion; you’re skipping the chance to support a dynamic and diverse industry poised for greatness. Still not convinced? Let me sway you with some valid reasons.
1. Unique, One-of-a-Kind Fashion
One of the biggest appeals of shopping locally, especially when it comes to emerging Nigerian designers, is the uniqueness. With new and upcoming designers, you’re almost guaranteed to find pieces that stand out. These designers are often at the cutting edge of style, experimenting with colours, patterns, and silhouettes you won’t find in mainstream stores. Nigerian designers have a knack for blending traditional influences with modern aesthetics, whether it’s an Ankara dress with a contemporary twist or a minimalist outfit with cultural inflections.
2. Strengthening the Local Economy
When you buy from indigenous designers, your money doesn’t disappear into the pockets of some faceless multi-
national corporation. Instead, it directly supports the local economy. Nigeria’s fashion industry is a major contributor to the country’s economy, with immense potential for growth. By supporting these designers, you’re contributing to job creation and economic stability in communities across the country. From the fabric suppliers to the artisans who hand-embroider the details, each purchase supports an ecosystem of creativity and craftsmanship that uplifts entire communities.
3. Sustainability and Ethical Production
The Nigerian fashion industry, with its close-knit networks, has the unique advantage of being able to focus on more ethical and sustainable production methods. When you buy from a Nigerian designer, you’re often supporting brands that prioritise responsible sourcing, sustainable practices, and fair treatment of workers. Many of these designers work with artisans and local textile makers, preserving centuries-old techniques while paying fair wages. This isn’t always the case with larger inter
national brands, where the origins of materials and production processes are often obscure, making it harder to gauge their environmental impact.
4. Celebrating African Identity and Heritage
For many Nigerian designers, fashion isn’t just about clothes—it’s a means of storytelling. Shopping local means supporting designers who are proud of their African heritage and who reflect that pride in every piece they create. Through fashion, they capture the soul of Nigeria’s diverse cultures and translate it into garments that carry a sense of place and identity. Each piece tells a story, blending the old with the new, and allows wearers to celebrate their heritage in a contemporary way. Whether you’re Nigerian or a lover of African culture, wearing locally crafted designs can feel like a celebration of African identity and heritage.
5. Connecting With the People Behind the Brand
There’s a deeply personal element to buying from an emerging Nigerian designer. Unlike international fashion brands, where the designer is often a distant figure, buying locally offers a chance to connect with the creators themselves. Many of these designers are open to feedback, and some even offer customisation options, allowing you to create something truly personal. It’s an
experience that’s far more meaningful than simply clicking “add to cart” on a generic fashion site.
6. Supporting the Future of Nigerian Fashion
When you support emerging Nigerian designers, you’re investing in the future of Nigerian fashion. The industry is young but brimming with potential, and every purchase helps budding designers continue their craft, invest in better materials, and expand their brands. With increased support, these designers have the potential to grow into established brands, inspiring the next generation of creatives and contributing to the country’s international fashion reputation. Nigerian designers have already made waves on the global stage, and with local support, there’s no telling how far they can go.
7. Breaking the Cycle of Fast Fashion
It’s no secret that the fast fashion industry has created a disposable culture where clothes are made cheaply, sold quickly, and tossed aside just as fast. You’re breaking free from this cycle by buying locally and investing in well-made pieces from Nigerian designers. You’re investing in quality over quantity and building a wardrobe filled with pieces that are meant to last. Many Nigerian designers emphasise quality and timelessness, crafting garments that you’ll want to wear year after year.
HOW INSTAGRAM FILTERS CHANGED
BEAUTY CULTURE—AND NOT FOR THE BETTER
Gone are the days when beauty standards were defined solely by glossy magazine covers and red-carpet appearances. Now, they exist within the palm of your hand, accessible through a simple swipe and tap. With the rise of social media filters, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat have redefined the way young people view themselves. However, what was once a playful way to enhance selfies and experiment with virtual makeup has spiralled into a deeper, more complex impact on self-esteem and self-perception.
have long warned that constantly engaging with digitally manipulated images can skew perceptions of beauty and lead to body image dissatisfaction. With everyone’s online presence curated and edited to highlight only the best angles and features, a relentless comparison cycle has emerged. Young people are not just comparing themselves to celebrities or influencers but also to idealised, filtered versions of their own friends and peers.
It’s no secret that the era of flawless skin and perfectly sculpted features has made many feel less confident about their natural appearance. The “filter dysmorphia” phenomenon, a term coined by experts, describes the growing trend of individuals feeling distressed when they look in the mirror and don’t see the filtered version of themselves staring back. It’s not uncommon for plastic surgeons to report an increase in requests from young people wanting cosmetic procedures to resemble how they look in a specific filter.
The Pursuit of Perfection or an Endless Trap?
As filters become more accessible and increasingly realistic, it becomes difficult to separate reality from fiction. Young people are often left questioning whether their unfiltered selves are “enough,” leading to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression.
The Rise of Digital Alter Egos
Social media filters initially emerged as a fun and creative way for users to customise their content. From rainbow effects to animal ears and digital makeup, filters added an element of whimsy to online interactions. But as technology evolved, so did the sophistication of these filters. Suddenly, filters weren’t just for adding humour or colour; they became tools to alter the contours of one’s face, smooth out skin imperfections, shrink the nose, or even enlarge the eyes. These augmented features began to resemble what society already deemed beautiful, and soon enough, these virtual touch-ups were normalised.
With access to these near-perfect versions of themselves, young people have embraced digital alter egos that seem unattainably flawless. According to a recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association, nearly 55% of teenagers and young adults admitted to using filters regularly and feeling pressured to replicate their filtered appearance in real life. The idealised self becomes addictive, and the lines between authenticity and artificiality start to blur.
Beauty Pressure in the Age of Filters
The impact of these filters goes beyond the aesthetic; it seeps into the very core of how young people feel about themselves. Psychologists
Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have attempted to address the negative impact by introducing features that disclose when a filter has been used, but these measures have done little to curb the overwhelming obsession with digital perfection. Critics argue that the problem isn’t just the filters themselves but the broader culture of curated perfection that social media perpetuates.
Social media activist Jameela Jamil, known for her body positivity campaigns, has emphasised that filters are a “gateway drug” into more dangerous body image issues. “It starts with smoothing out a few lines here and there, but soon enough, you feel like you can’t be seen in public or even online without altering how you look,” she wrote in a viral post. The reality is harsh: these seemingly innocent tools can make young people feel trapped in a digital feedback loop of seeking validation through likes and comments, always wondering if their natural self will ever be celebrated the way their edited self is.
Can We Break Free from the Filter Addiction?
Vulnerability is the New Black
EVERYTHING 2024 TAUGHT US ABOUT DATING
2024 has been a whirlwind year for love. As we gradually close out this year, which had us second-guessing almost every romantic decision, let’s reflect on the dating highs, lows, and surprising revelations. Spoiler alert: Dating in this modern age is like signing up for a social experiment where the rules keep changing. From tech-influenced connections to a newfound appreciation for simplicity, here’s everything 2024 taught us about dating.
Despite the alarming consequences, there is hope. Conversations around self-love, authenticity, and the harmful effects of filters are becoming louder and more widespread. Influencers and celebrities are starting to embrace the #NoFilter movement, proudly sharing unedited, raw images of themselves. Campaigns like the “Selfie Esteem” project aim to educate young people about the psychological impact of filters, urging them to embrace their unique features and beauty. But the responsibility doesn’t lie solely with individuals. Social media companies have a crucial role to play in curbing the addictive nature of filters. Advocates suggest that platforms should implement more rigorous regulations around the use of face-altering technology and consider banning filters that promote unrealistic beauty standards. Moreover, education around media literacy should be incorporated into school curriculums to equip young people with the skills to navigate social media’s filtered world. In the end, the goal isn’t to villainise filters but to understand their impact on our psyche and take steps to minimise harm. Social media will always be a space for creativity and self-expression, but it’s crucial to remember that the best version of ourselves is not the one enhanced by a digital tool. As society continues to grapple with the filter effect, embracing authenticity and promoting mental well-being must become the new standard for our social interactions.
We entered 2024, still in the thick of our curated dating profiles and pre-planned witty texts. But somewhere along the way, a shift happened. This year made vulnerability desirable again. Singles found themselves craving authenticity over aesthetics and wanting deeper conversations about dreams, fears, and, yes, even baggage. No more pretending to have it all figured out—2024 taught us that imperfection is the true intimacy currency.
Ghosting Isn’t Going Anywhere—But We’re Better at Handling It
Ghosting reared its ugly head once more, but this time, we learned to handle it like pros. Thanks to countless shared experiences and hilarious memes on social media, the sting of getting ghosted felt less personal and more universal. 2024 reminded us that silence from someone who wasn’t ready for a real connection is better than false hopes, and maybe, just maybe, it’s their loss.
The Great First-Date Reset
Here’s one for the books: 2024 ushered in a resurgence of the low-key first date. The pandemic left us with a love
for simplicity, and we leaned into that this year. We ditched extravagant dinners for experiences that felt more genuine and less pressured.
Long-Distance Love Made a Comeback
Oddly enough, long-distance relationships had a renaissance. Blame it on the increase in global travel and remote work, but we became more open to finding love beyond our own backyards. With better digital communication tools, 2024 reminded us that love doesn’t have to be confined to the same city limits.
Love Bombing vs. Genuine Attention
Oh, love bombing. The term, which refers to someone showering you with excessive affection and attention too soon, became a hot topic this year. It seemed like half of us were dating aspiring Netflix rom-com leads, only to discover their true intentions when things didn’t go our way. We got better at recognising love bombing for what it is: a rush that doesn’t last. By contrast, we learned to appreciate the steady, gentle pace of a real love story.
Green Flags > Red Flags
If the last few years were all about spotting red flags, 2024 was the year we focused on green ones. We started celebrating traits like good communication, emotional availability, and a genuine interest in our hobbies and lives. Singles became more intentional about who they let into their hearts, opting for partners who showed consistency over grand gestures.
We Can All Do Better
Lastly, if 2024 taught us one big lesson, it was that we could all do better—whether it’s communicating more clearly, being more open to possibilities, or understanding our own needs in a relationship. We learned that no one is perfect and that being honest about our flaws and areas of growth is a gift we give to ourselves and our future partners.
WHAT’S REALLY HARMING YOUR SKIN?
We invest in serums, creams, and the latest skincare gadgets in the pursuit of that elusive glow. Yet stubborn breakouts, premature wrinkles, and dullness still make unwelcome appearances. So, what’s really harming your skin? Sure, we all know the classic culprits: too much sun without protection, not enough sleep, and perhaps that extra glass of wine. But there’s more lurking beneath the surface—literally and figuratively—that could be sabotaging your skin’s health.
The Rise of Digital Alter Egos
1. Your Pillowcase: A Secret Breeding Ground
You might not realise it, but your pillowcase could be a silent contributor to breakouts, dullness, and premature ageing. We spend hours each night with our faces pressed against it, making it a haven for oils, bacteria, and dead skin cells. That’s right— your nightly slumber can turn into a skincare nightmare if you’re not swapping your pillowcase at least once a week. If you’re prone to breakouts or irritation, consider switching to a silk pillowcase, which can be gentler on the skin and prevent friction that leads to fine lines.
2. Tech Troubles: Blue Light Blues
We’re constantly tethered to our screens, from morning email checks to late-night social media scrolls. But all that screen time might be leaving a mark, quite literally, on your face. Blue light emitted from smartphones, laptops, and tablets penetrates deeper into the skin than UV rays, contributing to hyperpigmentation, inflammation, and even collagen breakdown. If your screen time is non-negotiable, consider adding a blue-light-blocking skincare product or a screen protector that filters out harmful light.
3. Over-Exfoliating
Exfoliation can be a game-changer for removing dead skin cells and encouraging a brighter complexion. But there’s a fine line between gentle polishing and full-on scrubbing your skin into distress. When you over-exfoliate, you’re not just removing dead cells; you’re stripping away natural oils, damaging your skin’s barrier, and making it more susceptible to irritation, dryness, and even breakouts. Stick to exfoliating once or twice a week, and alternate between a chemical exfoliant (like AHAs or BHAs) and a gentle scrub.
4. Stress
We all know that stress can disrupt our sleep, mood, and overall well-being, but it also directly impacts your skin. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, a hormone that can lead to excess oil production, breakouts, and even premature wrinkles. Stress can also weaken your skin’s barrier, making it more vulnerable to irritants. Finding ways to manage stress—whether it’s yoga, a relaxing bath, or a favourite hobby— can be one of your best skincare moves.
5. Sugar’s Hidden Damage
Sugar is more than just a waistline worry. High sugar intake triggers glycation, where sugar molecules attach to proteins like collagen and elastin, making them stiff and less elastic. This leads to sagging skin, wrinkles, and a loss of firmness. While a little treat now and then won’t hurt, maintaining a bal-
anced diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein can do wonders for your complexion. Try swapping sugary snacks with antioxidant-rich options, like berries and nuts, which fight free radicals and support skin health.
6. Environmental Pollutants
If you’re living in a city or near an industrial area, pollution is likely impacting your skin more than you think. Pollutants cling to your skin, creating a barrier that clogs pores, dehydrates, and triggers inflammation. Over time, this accelerates ageing and can cause issues like dullness, fine lines, and
Every makeup enthusiast knows the disappointment of their perfectly applied foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick fading or smudging after just a few hours. But there’s a secret weapon that can keep your makeup looking fresh from morning coffee to last call: setting spray. This miracle product is often overlooked but could be the game-changer your beauty routine needs. Here’s why incorporating a setting spray into your makeup regimen is a must.a
The Ultimate Makeup Protector
Setting spray is like the topcoat to your makeup routine; it seals in your artistry, providing the durability it needs to withstand your day. Just as a painter sets their masterpiece with a fixative, a setting spray ensures your makeup stays put, protecting against smudges, creases, and the dreaded melt-away that can happen in warmer climates or during a busy day.
Combat the Elements
pigmentation. Combatting pollution’s effects requires an extra layer of defense: antioxidants. Look for products with vitamin C, E, or ferulic acid to help neutralise free radicals and repair damage from pollutants.
7. Skipping Moisturiser
It’s a common misconception that oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need a moisturiser. But skipping this step can cause your skin to overcompensate by producing even more oil. The key is finding a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser that hydrates without clogging pores. When your skin is properly hydrated, it maintains a healthy barrier, which means fewer breakouts, reduced redness, and a better defence against external irritants.
8. Hot Showers
There’s nothing like a hot shower to melt away stress, but it’s not doing your skin any favours. Hot water strips away the natural oils your skin needs to stay moisturised and supple. This can lead to dryness, itching, and even damage to your skin barrier, making it more prone to irritation. Instead, opt for lukewarm showers and limit them to 10-15 minutes. And remember to apply a moisturiser immediately afterwards to lock in hydration.
9. Using Too Many Products
More isn’t always better, especially when it comes to skincare. Layering too many products can overwhelm your skin, leading to congestion, irritation, and even allergic reactions. A simple routine with a cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, and a targeted treatment (like a serum) can often do more than a cabinet full of products. It’s about finding what works for your skin type and sticking to it consistently.
Setting sprays are formulated with polymers that act like a shield against environmental factors, ensuring that your foundation doesn’t slip and your eyeshadow doesn’t crease, no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Some sprays even offer added SPF, helping to protect your skin from sun damage while keeping your makeup intact.
Hydration and Refreshment
Beyond setting your makeup, many sprays are infused with hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, green tea, or hyaluronic acid that help moisturise and refresh your skin. For those whose skin feels dry after applying makeup, a hydrating setting spray can bring a much-needed dewy finish, giving your skin a healthy, vibrant glow without compromising the durability of your makeup.
Versatility in a Bottle
Setting sprays come in various finishes, from matte to dewy, allowing you to achieve the exact look you desire. A matte finish spray is perfect for those with oily skin or for days when you want a sleek, shine-free look. Conversely, a dewy finish spray can enhance your skin’s natural glow, perfect for a night out or when you want a more youthful, fresh-faced appearance.
Ease of Use
One of the best parts about setting spray is its simplicity. A quick spritz is all it takes to set your makeup. It’s the last step in your makeup routine but possibly the most crucial. Unlike powders, which can sometimes alter the colour or texture of your makeup, setting spray is lightweight and invisible, ensuring that your makeup’s true colours shine through without any alteration.
Longevity is Key
We all strive for that pristine, just-applied makeup look to last as long as we need it to, and setting sprays address this head-on. They ensure that your makeup lasts longer and stays true to its form—no running, fading, or blotching. Whether you’re attending a full-day event or simply tackling a regular day’s schedule, setting spray makes frequent touch-ups a thing of the past.
