Oil Theft: Senate Engages Foreign Experts to Track Illegal Vessels on High Seas
PENGASSAN alleges stealing of country’s crude oil, jobs by Indian operator, Sterling Oil
Claims company illegally drilled five oil wells instead of three permitted Knocks regulators for not taking action
Sterling Oil: As responsible corporate citizens, we adhere to federal laws and industry regulations
Sunday Aborisade in Abuja, Peter Uzoho and Oluchi Chibuzor in Lagos
The Senate yesterday announced that it had invited international experts with capacity to track illegal vessels being used by oil bunkering barons to steal Nigeria's crude oil from the Niger Delta region of the country.
The Chairman, Senate adhoc Committee on Crude oil theft, Senator Ned Nwoko, (APC Delta North) disclosed this when he received executives of the Youth Wing of the HOSTCOM and Pipelines Impacted States Council of Nigeria led by their President, Fiawei Emmanuel Pathfinder, in his office.
This emerged as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) yesterday accused Sterling Oil, an energy company operating in the country, of stealing Nigeria’s crude and jobs meant for Nigerians.
President of PENGASSAN, Mr. Festus Osifo, made the allegation against the company when the association picketed Sterling Oil’s office in Lagos.
In its reaction to the allegations by PENGASSAN, Sterling Oil in a statement stressed that it abides by Nigerian laws and reaffirmed its commitment to employee welfare. The company said it has taken the allegations by PENGASSAN with utmost seriousness, arguing that it displayed a commitment to resolve the issue and address any concerns by open, transparent, and constructive dialogue with the Union.
Continuing, Nwoko said his Committee would soon organise a public hearing comprising all stakeholders in the oil and gas sector, including policy makers, major industry players,
security agencies, traditional institutions and youth groups across the region to discuss ways to address the disturbing cases of crude oil theft in Nigeria.
He said, “I can tell you straight away that we have been able to engage some international experts who can trace movement of vessels, both legal ones and illegal ones.
“They (experts) will be able to also trace every payment that is attached to each vessel.
“They will trace them to wherever they are. It could be in New York. It could be in Marbella in Spain. It doesn't matter where. We have gotten those who can help us. First to retrieve the money that arose from stolen crude.
“And also to make sure that we curtail or minimise or stop if possible, the instances of crude oil being stolen.
“In the next week or so, you will see the advert in the papers and other videos. Inviting all the stakeholders.
“Stakeholders from the military, to the police, to the International Oil Companies, all of them, including the regulators, the NNPC, all of them and the shipping companies, the NIMASA and agencies like that. They will all be here.”
Speaking further, he said: “We are not leaving behind the host communities. You will all be there. So I like your second letter, which you didn't read.”
He described his new responsibility as a very important national assignment and that his panel would not witch-hunt anybody but would track all those who are involved in the illegal lifting of the nation's crude oil.
Nwoko also said he got the assurances of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio that there should be no sacred cows who should be
spared in the course of the assignment.
Nwoko said, “For me this is a very important national assignment. I understand the problems that we're trying to solve.
“And I can assure you that with your support, and support of all the other stakeholders, we will achieve a great deal of success.
“I'm aware of the problems that the communities have faced over time. But you know, if all things were to work out well, the compensation or payments that host communities are meant to get, will be more if there's more crude production.
“The more the production that we have, the more you people will be taken care of.”
He also pledged that his committee would look into the areas of organising and reforming the areas of local crude oil refining as being done in other civilised societies of the World.”
Pathfinder, who led the HOSTCON Youth Council of Nigeria to the Senate, pledged to mobilise youths across the region to provide useful information that would enable the Nwoko-led panel, succeed in its assignment.
The group also seized the occasion, to honour the Senator with its highest award called the ‘Credence of Honour’.
PENGASSAN Alleges Stealing of Nigeria’s Crude Oil, Jobs by Indian Operator, Sterling Oil
Meanwhile, PENGASSAN has accused Sterling Oil, an energy company operating in the country of stealing Nigeria’s crude and jobs meant for Nigerians.
President of PENGASSAN, Mr. Festus Osifo, made the allegation against the company yesterday when the association picketed Sterling Oil’s office in Lagos.
Osifo also alleged that Sterling Oil sometime in the past illegally drilled five oil wells instead of three permitted it by the authorities and that the agencies of government were watching helplessly without taking action to sanction the company.
He said the company has taken over all the jobs in the company that should be for Nigerians, leaving teeming graduates in the country suffering joblessness.
“In a country where people are suffering, where graduates are roaming the streets, no work, we are allowing Indians to man everything.
“The crude belongs to us in Nigeria. We even heard at a time that they were giving permits to drill three oil wells, and they ended up drilling five, and nobody did anything.
“This is stealing. They are stealing Nigerian crude. And our agencies will all fold their arms and be watching.
We said, no, enough is enough”, Osifo alleged.
Alleging that the company has committed several anti-labour practices and contravened the country’s Labour Act, he said the company has Indians doing everything, including kitchen staff.
“The cooks are even Indians. And we are closing our eyes and allowing this illegality to happen,” he further alleged.
The PENGASSAN national president also stated that the chief executive officer, chief operating officer and top managers of Sterling Oil had been declared wanted in India, adding that it showed that they had committed a lot of atrocities in their home country, while Nigeria welcomed them. Osifo alleged further, “And it is also worthy to note that the CEO and COO and top managers of this company have been declared wanted in India.
As Tinubu Hosts Senate Leadership to Iftar, Shettima Canvasses Unity, Alliance Among Nation's Political Leaders
Deji Elumoye in Abuja
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday evening called for unity and collaboration among leaders in order to sustain the gains of reforms by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking when President Tinubu hosted leaders of the Senate to Iftar (breaking of Ramadan fast) at the new State House Banquet Hall, Shettima said the country has reached an inflection point where
Akinyemi Harps on Global Diplomacy
Emma Okonji and Agnes Ekebuike
Renowned diplomat and former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi has provided a critical analysis of ongoing global conflicts, including the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the tense US-RussiaUkraine situation.
Speaking yesterday on ‘The Morning Show,’ on Arise News Channels, the broadcast arm of THISDAY Newspapers, Akinyemi offered insights into Africa’s dip-
lomatic struggles and the broader implications of international power dynamics.
Akinyemi expressed concern over the DRC’s recent decision to invite U.S. involvement in exchange for security against the M23 rebel group, which has destabilised the eastern region. He traced this development to historical patterns of external exploitation, likening it to Belgium’s colonial rule.
“The Congo started as the private property of the King of Belgium, and now, 200 years later, we are
"the bold, courageous leadership and well-thought-out policies of Mr President and proper execution of same, conspire to meet at a confluence."
He noted that while it is time for Nigerians to reap the benefits of President Tinubu's courageous decisions in critical sectors, the cooperation of political leaders is required to sustain the momentum.
The Vice President drew attention to the falling food prices, declining price of petrol and stability in the
to
forex market, saying they are evidence of the gains of the President's "bold vision and courageous decisions.
"The economy is projected to grow at 4.3 to 4.6 percent this year and in the fullness of time, posterity will be kind to you, Mr President," he further stated.
Shettima expressed gratitude to the Senate for the cordial relationship since the assumption of the current leadership, even as he urged the legislators to consider themselves as one big family with the executive

back to a similar situation where Congo is offering its resources in exchange for protection,” he stated.
He placed blame on Rwandan President Paul Kagame, whom he identified as the main supporter of M23.
According to Akinyemi, Africa’s regional mechanisms, such as the East African Community’s security efforts, have failed to contain the crisis, forcing the DRC to turn to a global power for intervention.
He warned, however, that reliance on the US would come at a steep
price, saying, “You don’t give people your resources and not expect that you will pay heavily for it.”
Despite this, he suggested that American involvement could bring some stability by curbing private entities that have long exploited Congo’s vast mineral wealth.
On the Russia-Ukraine war, Akinyemi criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s confrontational approach toward the US in recent diplomatic engagements.
He compared Zelensky’s
demeanor in the Oval Office to his own experience dealing with American, British, and African diplomats during his tenure.
“With the US Secretary of State, I wasn’t confrontational, I presented my point of view calmly and respectfully,” Akinyemi explained, noting that Zelensky’s mistake was addressing the American president as an equal.
He suggested that the U.S. played a strategic role in exposing Zelensky’s diplomatic vulnerabilities, setting a trap that he unwittingly fell into.

"We are members of the same family but sleeping in different rooms. We are essentially one people tied to a common destiny. What unites us supercedes whatever it is that divides us," he told the lawmakers.
Assuring of continued collaboration and support between the two arms of government, the Vice President said, "We are one big family irrespective of political affiliations, religious persuasions, tribe or sectional background. We will continue to nurture this relationship and take it to greater heights."
Speaking earlier on behalf of the Senators, Senate President Godswill Akpabio thanked President Tinubu for the support given to the 10th Senate, including the President's approvals to legislations passed by the chamber. He assured of continued and improved cooperation, saying the Senate is proud of the achievements of President Tinubu and would continue to collaborate with the executive.
The Senate President prayed for divine wisdom and good health for the President and the Vice President to sustain the good work in the interest of Nigeria's development.

NNPC: Nigeria Attracted $17bn FDI in 2024 on Tinubu's Regulatory Reforms
National oil company woos global investors
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) yesterday said that Nigeria attracted about $17 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) after the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) as well as the regulatory reforms embarked upon by the federal government.
The national oil company also called on global investors to direct their attention to the Nigerian oil and gas sector as the nation is now an investors’ haven owing to the robust regulatory reforms and the investment-friendly policies of the
The Executive Vice President, Upstream, Mr. Udy Ntia, made the call during a session with investors at the 2025 CERAWeek by S&P Global in Houston, Texas, United States, a statement signed by the company's spokesman, Olufemi Soneye, stated. Speaking on the theme: "Spotlight: Attracting Investment for Oil and Gas", Ntia emphasised that Nigeria was well-positioned as a safe and attractive destination for investment as the nation is currently expanding its oil and gas industry to meet rising global energy demand driven by geopolitical tensions and the energy policies of
the US administration.
"For us in Nigeria, despite global energy security concerns, including those in Europe, we see significant opportunities. We have strategically positioned our assets to leverage the current strong price environment, which has remained favourable over the past two to three years. As a result, we anticipate substantial investment inflows into the sector," he stated.
The EVP listed some of the areas with huge investment opportunities in the country to include the refining and gas sub-sectors, stressing that Nigeria was keen on expanding it refining capacity to reduce dependency on
imports, even as it is also interested in tapping into the nation’s vast gas reserves of about 207 trillion cubic feet (TCF) to drive industrialisation and economic growth.
"Gas will play a critical role in Nigeria’s energy future. We are expanding our gas infrastructure in collaboration with partners such as Shell, ENI, and Total. Our LNG Train 7 project is advancing, and we are investing in domestic pipeline networks to meet local energy demands," he explained.
Ntia also disclosed that the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and the series of Executive Orders signed by President
FRC Boss: Sustainability Reporting Will Mitigate Risks, Spur Opportunities in Insurance Sector, Others
The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive, Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, yesterday said the adoption of sustainability reporting was crucial for demonstrating the commitment of insurance companies and other financial institutions to responsible business practices, sustainable principles, risks and opportunities.
Sustainability reporting is the practice of organisations disclosing their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and impacts caused by their everyday activities.
Speaking at the opening of the industry-specific workshop on the implementation of ISSB’s IFRS S1 & S2 for insurance companies and Other Financial Institutions in Nigeria, Olowo said, its adoption could also enhance the companies' reputation and brand value.
Represented by the FRC Coordinating Director, Accounting Standards and Sustainability Reporting, Dr. Iheanyi Anyahara, he stressed that by integrating ESG considerations into their decision-making processes and reporting, insurance and financial institutions can play a critical role in promoting sustainable development and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Olowo, however, expressed worry as a regulator, that none of the insurance and other non-banking institutions was yet to be part of the adoption roadmap for sustainability reporting in the country.
The voluntary phase of adoption runs between 2024 to 2027 to prepare entities for the mandatory period by 2028.
He said, "The impending negative effect of climate change requires everyone to act, and it is therefore not a business decision or a nice to have.
"It is a compliance issue, which every company is expected to comply by default through cultural behaviour.
"Sustainability is thus at the centrepiece of human existence and as such key issues in sustainability reporting for insurance and other financial institutions include climate change and environmental risk management; social responsibility and community development; governance and ethics; human rights and labour practices; customer privacy and data protection; and financial inclusion and economic development."
Olowo emphasised that sustainability reporting was an essential aspect of responsible insurance and allied companies’ prescriptive best practices.
He urged participants to embrace the new reporting guide, and get early into the implementation through voluntary adoption for their learning curves before the mandatory period.
He said, "Let us take advantage of
ICRC Moves to Fast-track Construction of Dasin Hausa Dam, Offers Hope to Flood-prone Communities
The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has commenced move to accelerate the construction of the Dasin Hausa Dam, aiming to end decades of devastating floods affecting Taraba, Adamawa, Benue, and other river basin communities.
According to a statement, the dam, first planned in the 1980s as a strategic buffer against floods caused by Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam, has remained stalled for over 40 years, resulting in recurring humanitarian crises. Under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the ICRC recently convened a high-level
meeting with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited to advance the project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
The session, led by ICRC Director-General, Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, reviewed implementation timelines, addressed regulatory concerns, and identified immediate actions to expedite construction.
Ewalefoh emphasised Tinubu’s directive for innovative privatesector participation in critical infrastructure, highlighting that the Dasin Hausa Dam would mitigate annual flooding disasters,
generate over 300 megawatts of electricity, and provide irrigation to more than 150,000 hectares of farmland in Adamawa, Taraba, and Benue states.
“The completion of Dasin Hausa Dam is not just about stopping floods—it’s about securing our future,” Ewalefoh stated.
“We have witnessed enough devastation from floodwaters released from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam. This dam will protect communities, preserve livelihoods, boost industrial growth, and create thousands of jobs through enhanced irrigation farming and stable power supply,” he added.
this opportunity to shape the future of sustainability reporting and create long-term value for our organisations, stakeholders, and the environment."
He pointed out that the workshop, which was packaged in partnership with the Nigeria Integrated Reporting Committee (NIRC) was in furtherance of FRC's resolve to ensure that insurance and other financial institutions, "know their onions when it comes to sustainability reporting before the mandatory period."
Olowo pointed out that the FRC was proactive to be involved in the standard-setting process of ISSB’s sustainability reporting from the beginning, by not only declaring its intention to do early adoption but also by following through to have a technical think tank established by the council.
Tinubu in 2023 have significantly liberalised the regulatory framework, offering incentives for cost recovery, royalty payments, and profit-sharing mechanisms.
“Nigeria recorded $16 billion to $17 billion in foreign investment inflows in 2024 following the implementation of these regulatory reforms,” he added.
He encouraged foreign investors, particularly from China and India, to explore the investment opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, citing the country’s large crude oil reserves (over 37 billion barrels) and flexible investment models, including joint ventures and production-sharing contracts.
"Nigeria offers a stable democracy, improved security, and a business friendly regulatory framework. We welcome investors from China, India, and beyond to partner with us in unlocking the vast potential of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector," Ntia concluded.
The session featured global industry leaders such as the Deputy Director General, Planning, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Pinxian Zhang; Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL), Rajarshi Gupta; and Chairman of Libya’s National Oil Corporation, Masoud Mahmoud. CERAWeek is one of the largest energy conferences in the world, drawing thousands of foremost global energy industry experts and a host of other corporate and government leaders from around the world annually to Houston, United States, for a week-long conversation on the future of energy.

NCS: Suspension of Remita Services from TSA Will Erode ICT Gains
Emma Okonji
The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), the umbrella body for all information technology (IT) professionals in Nigeria, has condemned the suspension of Remita services from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) by the federal government.
The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) recently clarified that Remitta remains the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) approved payment gateway and had said the federal government had not discarded the platform.
The OAGF had explained that Remita would rather be integrated into the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance (TMRAS) alongside other eligible Payment
Solution Service Providers (PSSPs) for government revenue collection and remittances to enhance liberalisation. Remita is a software application that manages federal government finances and financial transactions across the country.
The Remita software, which was developed by SystemSpecs, an indigenous IT company of over 35 years experience and a member of NCS, was said to have saved the federal government billons of Naira that would have been lost in different accounts hitherto operated by the federal government before the introduction of TSA and the emergence of Remita. However, President of NCS, Dr. Muhammad Sirajo Aliyu, who spoke at a press conference
in Lagos yesterday, told journalists that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) had written SystemSpecs, informing the IT company of the plans by government to introduce a new payment platform known as the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System that would take effect from March 4, 2025.
The new payment platform seeks to streamline and manage federal government revenue collections and payments across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government. “Why should the federal government decide to introduce a new payment platform that will manage its funds collection across MDAs, when Remita is active and efficient?

After Meeting Tinubu, Lagos Lawmakers Sing ‘On Your Mandate We Shall Stand’
Speaker Obasa keeps sealed lips, Faleke says parley went well
Deji Elumoye in Abuja
President Bola Tinubu, yesterday evening, met with members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, at State House, Abuja.
The members, including Obasa, who declined comments after the closed-door meeting, came out singing “on your mandate we shall stand”.
Obasa had arrived for the meeting about 2:50pm and was led separately to the president's office, while his colleagues, including Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, arrived earlier in two white Toyota Coaster buses that
were driven through the forecourt route for the scheduled meeting.
Sources hinted that the private meeting was not unconnected with the leadership crisis that recently rocked the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Emerging from Tinubu's office about 4:30pm, some members of the Lagos Assembly were heard singing "on your mandate, we shall stand".
For about five minutes, the lawmakers kept singing the popular political anthem commonly used by supporters of Tinubu to affirm their loyalty to him at public functions.
The song rented the air as they filed out towards the two buses
FG Urged to Remove All Encumbrances on Farm Lands to Enhance Food Production
Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo in Umuahia
As farming season fast approaches, the federal government has been urged to take all necessary measures to remove all encumbrances on farm lands so that food production can resume across the nation.
The Vice-chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, made the call at a media chat to mark his fourth anniversary in office.
He lamented that farm lands across parts of the country, including the traditional food belts of the nation have been rendered inaccessible to farmers due to terrorist activities.
that were parked and waiting for their departure.
Obasa, who came out of the president's office after his colleagues had left, however, refused to field questions from reporters.
He was joined by a member of the House of Representatives
representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in Lagos, Hon. James Faleke, as well as a protocol officer.
Faleke told newsmen that it was a successful meeting.
"The meeting went well," he said, refusing to give more details.
Obasa was on January 13, 2025
impeached as Speaker by some of his colleagues. But he was reinstated on March 3 following the intervention of political stakeholders in the state, and, allegedly, on the orders of the president, who considered his removal a slight.
Despite Obasa's reinstatement,
it was apparent that the bad blood already generated by the impeachment was yet to subside. And this was believed to have informed the meeting between the president and the concerned parties in the Lagos Assembly leadership crisis.
NERC Sets Up Panel to Review Technical Operation of National Grid
Kogi formally takes over regulation of its electricity market
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has inaugurated the Grid Code Review Panel (GCRP) to promote efficient power sector operations and overhaul the technical functioning of the national grid.
Company of Nigeria (TCN), with a primary function of ensuring that electricity generated by power plants is efficiently transmitted and distributed across the country while maintaining stability and reliability.
grid collapse.
Prof. Iwe blamed the encumbrances on farm lands for the prevailing high cost of food and the general hunger in the land, noting that many farmers have been killed, crops destroyed and farm lands out of bound.
He warned that the drive for Nigeria to become self-sufficient in food production would remain a mirage if farmers remain separated from their farms in North East, North West and North Central zones.
The MOUAU VC also called for adoption of smart agriculture as a way of making everybody to get involved in food production, saying that "hunger is prevailing and the need for people to say give us something to eat is still there".
"Agricultural lands must be combed and all encumbrances removed to enable people go back to their farms and grow food," he said.
A statement in Abuja from the electricity sector regulator stated the panel plays a crucial role in the power sector and is responsible for evaluating and administering amendments to the grid code, which sets out the technical requirements for connection to and use of the national grid.
While inaugurating the panel, the NERC Chairman, Sanusi Garba, told the panel that the commission has very high expectations.
He noted that the members should be dedicated to delivering on the national assignment of reviewing the code to make it fit for purpose and resolve the issues for which it was set up.

NSE Confers Fellowship on 178 Engineers, Urges Awardees to Promote Local Content
Emmanuel Addeh
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) yesterday conferred its fellowship on 178 members, urging awardees to forge meaningful relationships and promote Nigerian content.
Speaking at a dinner for the new conferees in Abuja, the National President of the society, Margaret Oguntala, said the unique occasion served as a platform to celebrate excellence, dedication, and the spirit of innovation.
She stated that Nigerian engineers had been at the forefront of driving progress and development across various sectors, whether in infrastructure, energy, healthcare or information technology.
She added that it behoved on the new fellows to carry the banner of the profession high anywhere they go, charging them to carry themselves always with the dignity and comportment that the fellowship.
Oguntala paid tribute to the awardees’ commitment to excellence, their tireless pursuit of knowledge,
and their dedication to the advancement of the profession, explaining that each conferee represented the epitome of engineering excellence.
“The crucial networking session offers the opportunity for all of us-engineers, politicians and other stakeholders to engage with one another and forge meaningful relationships that will culminate in long-term collaborations for the ultimate cause of mutual advancement for our respective professions as well as progress and prosperity for our dear nation.
At the heart of the grid’s operations is the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, Osun State, which oversees the real-time dispatch of electricity. Nigeria's power generation is largely from hydro and thermal plants. But the electricity they produce must be carefully balanced to match national demand.
The NCC continuously monitors system conditions, directing Generating Companies (Gencos) on how much power to produce at any given moment to maintain grid stability, as an imbalance between supply and demand could cause fluctuations in frequency, leading to partial or total
NERC explained that the panel comprises 19 persons, comprising 15 members and four others serving in the panel’s secretariat. The members were drawn from various agencies including generation companies, TCN, Distribution Companies (Discos), eligible customers, among others.
The panel is expected to evaluate the proposed amendments to the existing grid code and present it to the ‘Initial Stakeholders Advisory Panel’ to review it before NERC approves it.
In his remarks, the NERC Commissioner, Engineering Performance and Monitoring, Chidi Ike, noted that the inauguration of the present members of the GCRP came at a time that it is needed the most.
According to him, the previous panel was constituted in 2018, explaining that much had changed
since then in the operation of the national electricity grid.
Also speaking, the Chairperson of the panel, Nafisat Ali, assured of the members’ cooperation towards delivering on the tasks they were given.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has formally taken over oversight of the electricity market in Kogi State from NERC.
In a ceremony to mark the takeover at the NERC headquarters in Abuja, NERC Chairman, Garba, expressed his delight that KSERC officials collaborated with the commission to gain regulatory knowledge from the commission.
He assured that NERC will keep an open door to assist KSERC in the information they need to support their seamless operations.

With Inadequate Local Supply, Dangote Buys More Foreign Oil
Ramps up refining activities, takes delivery of over 3m barrels in March

Nigeria's Dangote refinery is increasing its processing rates, taking delivery of over 3 million barrels of American crude and other international shipments in March, in addition to domestic deliveries, as local crude sales become increasingly inadequate.
The refinery, which has yet to reach full capacity, is expected to continue importing crude from various sources, including the Atlantic basin, based on price competitiveness, Bloomberg reported yesterday.
At full capacity, the refinery could process 650,000 barrels a day, making it the largest oil refinery in Africa, and has already reduced Nigeria's
fuel imports and glut of Nigerian crude, the report said.
Nigeria’s Dangote refinery is drawing feedstock from across the world to add to its domestic deliveries as the mega-plant gradually ramps up, altering the region’s import and export outlook.
It has taken delivery of more than 3 million barrels of American crude since the start of the month. The refinery has also made purchases closer home, importing a shipment of Angola’s Pazflor grade and a cargo of Algeria’s Saharan Blend from Glencore Plc in recent weeks.
The giant facility near Lagos has been boosting processing rates since it started up early last year but has yet to reach full capacity. Still, run
rates appear to be increasing so far this month, according to an analyst at Energy Aspects Ltd.
“Crude deliveries in the last two weeks have averaged 450,000 barrels a day, and our satellite monitoring shows a recent draw in crude stocks at the refinery, indicating runs are likely on the rise,” said Randy Hurburun, senior refinery analyst at the consultancy. The researcher estimates that runs averaged 380,000 barrels per day over January and February.
At full tilt, Dangote could run at 650,000 barrels a day, making it the largest oil refinery in Africa by far and dwarfing any of Europe’s plants. The refinery has already trimmed a glut of Nigerian crude
and transformed the nation’s fuel imports.
Dangote refinery is importing crude oil from the US, Angola and Algeria, tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg said. A spokesman for Dangote didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, Bloomberg said.
Even as overseas purchases are increasing, the refinery runs mostly on local feedstock, taking in more than 10 million barrels of Nigerian crude last month, according to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.
The Nigerian government is in talks with Dangote to extend a contract to sell it crude in the local currency. The Nigerian
WIKE: HEAVENS WON'T FALL IF FUBARA IS IMPEACHED, GOV LOCKED OUT OF ASSEMBLY
The governor said he was prevented from entering the compound, despite the fact that he had notified the Assembly of his intention to visit in view of their request that he re-presented the 2025 appropriation bill.
The relationship between the governor and the legislature, peopled mainly by Wike’s loyalists, soured early in his tenure following political disagreements with his predecessor, now FCT minister.
Things seemed to get quite bad for the governor recently after the Supreme Court reinstated the Amaewhule-led legislators.
But foremost group of elders from the oil producing region, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), asked President Bola Tinubu not to consider any party to the crisis superior.
PANDEF urged Tinubu to take decisive steps to resolve the escalating crisis, contending that a win-win outcome must be sought outside the courts.
The group urged the president to prevail on Wike and Fubara to prioritise peace and seek a lasting solution.
At the same time, Ijaw National Congress (INC) reiterated its position that if Fubara was impeached for any reason, the consequences would be too heavy for the Nigerian state to bear economically.
Urging the president to prevail on Wike and Fubara to seek an amicable resolution for the sake of peace and stability, INC said it was concerned by the prolonged political impasse in the state.
However, addressing some of the latest concerns on the Rivers crisis, Wike described PANDEF, whose members met Tinubu to try to proffer solution to the festering political crisis in the state, as an unreliable organisation made up of political merchants, only motivated by money.
Wike, who spoke on a live television interview, said if Fubara had, indeed, breached the tenets of the constitution and the House of Assembly deemed the infraction an impeachable offence, then the governor should be impeached. He stated, "If you have committed an offence to be Impeached, what's wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It's provided in the constitution. And let me tell you, and I have heard people say, 'oh, if they impeach him, there'll be breakdown' and all that.
“Rubbish. Nonsense. Who is he? Nonsense! Tell me who are the militants? Who is not a militant? Who is born as a militant? No, tell me the person that's born. The day you were given birth to, they say you're a militant.
“Who is not a militant? Who cannot blow up the pipeline? Why do you arrogate this power to a certain group of people? The Ijaw people are the only people who can blow a pipeline? What nonsense is that? Who told you Ogoni people cannot break pipeline?
“Who told you Ikwerre people cannot blow up pipeline? Who told you Ekpeye people cannot blow up pipelines? Who is the one doing the contract of the pipeline? Is he not an Ijaw son? Is he not Tompolo. Is it not a Tantita? They gave you that to do
surveillance.
“And the same Ijaw people are going to blow a pipeline and somebody will hear that? That's crap. The moment I hear that, to hell. How dare you threaten a country? How dare you? The threat does not exist. These are political things planted by some people in government.
"Look, all of us know ourselves. You make an appointment of MD of NDDC, they threaten, they will blow pipeline. You make an appointment here, they threaten, they blow pipeline. What kind of country are we in?
“As a sitting president, you're threatening me that if you follow what the court said, I will blow up everywhere. Let the whole country be blown up. People must learn. Enough is enough! You don't tell anybody that.”
The minister warned the Ijaw ethnic group against threatening the peace in Rivers State with the threat to blow up pipelines in the event the governor, who is of Ijaw stock, was impeached, saying the Ijaw do not constitute the majority in the Niger Delta.
Wike SAID, "People must speak the truth. Heaven will not fall. You only die once, not two times. Let me say something and people should have that right: the Ijaw does not constitute the majority of the Niger Delta. Every day you wake up, Ijaw will do this.
“In Akwa Ibom, Ijaw cannot be governor. In Delta, Ijaw is minority of the minority. With all due respect to our late elder statesman, Henry Clark, he's from Delta. He had never produced an Ijaw man to be governor
of Delta. The only place Ijaw can solely be governor is Bayelsa State.
“Not in Edo, not in Rivers. It's minority of the minorities. Out of our own benevolence, live and let’s live. If it is by strength, it cannot be the Ogonis. It cannot be the Ekpeyes. It cannot be the Ikwerres. It cannot. Every time you hear this, Ijaw said this, Ijaw just didn't say this.
“What kind of system are we talking about? In fact, when I brought this governor, they said, he is not the real Ijaw, that if they are taking about real Ijaws, it should come to the Kalabaris, that how can you say if they want to give power to Ijaws, it should it should be the Opobo.
“You see the problem that we're in. And you close your eyes, you did it. All those who fought me, who said, no, we cannot accept this, are the ones parading themselves, hanging around him, taking his money.”
Wike claimed PANDEF could sell people for money.
He stated, “These leaders, look at the comments they have made. Mr. President intervened in this matter. Vice President was there. National Security Adviser was there. National Security Adviser signed for implementation of peace. This same PANDEF came out and said Mr. President has no right. They took Mr. President to court.
“People like Chief Sara-Igbe, one of the worst persons you can ever think of. One of the political merchants. I know them. King Diete-Spiff, whom I respected, went to Government House. Look at the statement he made. ‘I'm
AKPABIO VS NATASHA: SENATE PRESENTS DEFENCE BEFORE IPU, SEEKS FAIR HEARING
for her alleged sexual harassment case, but for gross misconduct against the upper chambers.
The House Committee Chairperson on Women Affairs and Social Development, Kafilat Ogbara, in a statement she read before the IPU, noted that it was the lawmakers' reaction to the previous day's allegations by Akpoti-Uduaghan at the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, that she was treated badly for the sexual harassment case.
In Akpoti-Uduaghan’s earlier presentation before IPU, she had alleged among others, that she was suspended for challenging her alleged sexual harassment by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
But in response, Ogbara reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the principles of justice and due process and to the protection of fundamental human rights, explaining that as a nation, the country recognises the gravity of sexual harassment and acknowledges the necessity of addressing such allegations with all sense of responsibility.
“Such allegations demand a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation. At the same time, we must ensure that fairness is upheld for all individuals involved, and that justice is neither predetermined nor one-sided.
“ Nigeria remains firmly committed to upholding women's rights and combating gender-based violence through strong legal frameworks and institutions. Our Parliament
and Judiciary continue to undergo reforms to strengthen these efforts.
“The ongoing legislative initiatives seek to address historical imbalances in women's representation in our Parliament, including the Reserve Seats Bill and other crucial proposed constitutional amendments aimed at safeguarding the rights and privileges of women. These efforts underscore our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable political space,” she stated.
Stressing that the allegations raised against the Nigerian Senate and the Senate President, Akpabio, had garnered significant attention both within Nigeria and internationally, Ogbara said that it was equally important to acknowledge that the Senate President, in his official capacity, had strongly denied these allegations.
“ it is important to recognise that both the allegations made and the responses provided are serious matters that require careful and unbiased scrutiny. This issue, which remains subjudice, involves multiple elements, including allegations of sexual harassment and potential violations of Senate rules. While it is necessary to engage in introspection and understand any potential connections, these matters must also be considered separately.
“It is imperative that we uphold the principles of fairness and ensure that no individual is prematurely judged without a transparent and impartial process. Therefore, I call for the following actions: A thorough and
unbiased investigation, ensuring that all claims and defences are examined fairly and transparently.
“Protection of all parties involved, safeguarding the rights of all individuals, and preventing any form of intimidation or retaliation, accountability and transparency and upholding institutional integrity by ensuring that due process is rigorously followed,” the senate said.
Reading from a text signed by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, the senate reiterated that AkpotiUduaghan was suspended for gross misconduct and unruly behavior and not as a result of allegation of sexual harassment or assault.
“The authority of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria firmly refutes the deliberate misinformation and false narratives being circulated by certain media organisations regarding the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
“Let it be unequivocally stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended solely for persistent acts of misconduct, blatant disregard for the provisions of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 as amended, and gross indiscipline, nothing more, nothing less,” she added.
According to the senate, if AkpotiUduaghan had strictly followed its guiding principles, the Senate would have treated her petition based on merit in line with its practice, noting that she never obeyed the established practices of the institution where she was serving.
“Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s
suspension was a decision of the Committee of the Whole Senate, following the submission of a report by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges. The report found her guilty of violating Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Rules and recommended her immediate suspension.
“The disciplinary action was a response to her repeated violations of legislative decorum, including: Refusing to sit in her assigned seat during plenary on 25 February 2025, despite multiple pleas from the leadership and other ranking senators, and acts of open defiance and disorderly conduct.
“She was speaking without being recognised by the presiding officer in clear violation of parliamentary practices and procedures on 25 February 2025. (She) engaged in unruly and disruptive behaviour obstructing the orderly conduct of Senate proceedings and made abusive and disrespectful remarks against the leadership of the Senate,” part of the speech read.
"She was also accused of defying and refusing to comply with the summons of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges mandated to investigate cases of misconduct," she added.
According to the senate, these actions represented a direct challenge to the authority of the Senate and a violation of the Senate Standing Orders 2023, as amended, that govern
National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) said it has supplied 48 million barrels since the agreement started in October.
“Ultimately, price competitiveness will continue to be the dominant factor in deciding Dangote’s crude imports,” said Ronan Hodgson, a London-based analyst at FGE. “WTI will continue to be an attractive grade for the refinery because of its light-sweet nature and price competitiveness with local West Africa grades,” he said.
Other Atlantic basin grades like Libya’s Sharara and Es Sider and the North Sea’s Oseberg, Ekofisk and Troll could all be contenders at the right price, according to Energy Aspects’ Hurburun.
an Ijaw man. You're an Ijaw man. Call us, we'll be with you’.
“An elder statesman would go and make such a statement? Now you are the same person coming again now to go and meet Mr. President to intervene. Intervene what? Mr. President that has no right? Mr. President that he took to court, that he has no power to intervene?
“They took Mr. President to court from the State High Court in Rivers State to the Court of Appeal, they lost. Now down to Supreme Court. Now people do things, they don't want to go back to let people know the correct thing.
“Now, Supreme Court has given judgement, and you are going to tell the president to do what? That president should do what? That Supreme Court's judgement should not be obeyed?”
On the drama that played out at the legislature, Fubara had alongside some of his cabinet members visited the lawmakers at the Assembly quarters along Aba Road, the temporary location for their sittings, but met a locked gate.
That followed a recent Supreme Court judgement ordering the governor to re-present the 2025 appropriation bill to the Assembly led by Amaewhule.
Tinubu had also, while addressing political leaders from the state, told Fubara to adhere to the rule of law, insisting that he must respect the court judgement for lasting peace and prosperity of the state.
Fubara had severally stated that he would implement the judgement of the Supreme Court in the interest of the state. He had also sent a letter to the Assembly leadership seeking a reconciliation meeting.
But on getting to the temporary venue for the Assembly sittings yesterday, the gate was under lock and key, with no sign of anyone in the premises to receive the governor.
Disappointed with the development, Fubara said, "I am here this morning with a few members of the Executive Council to comply with the Supreme Court judgement.
“Before my arrival I had already made several attempts with my phone calls to reach the Speaker and other House members. I also gave them a letter personally, which was transmitted to the Speaker for this particular visit.
“But it’s unfortunate that at the gate you can see that the place is completely sealed and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.
"The reason why we are doing this, I have always said it, is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. Well, I don't think there is anything to worry about, maybe they are working on the letter. I expect to hear from them very soon."
Responding to Fubara, the lawmakers denied that they received any official communication from

development, aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s ‘Budget of Sustainability.’
Themed: “‘Lagos Economic Outlook: Charting a Resilient Path Towards a Sustainable Future,’ this year’s LEDU, he said, underscores the state's commitment to evidence-based policymaking, fiscal sustainability, and inclusive development.
Besides, it showed that the Lagos economy recorded significant growth in the first half of 2024, expanding to N27.38 trillion, a substantial increase from N19.65 trillion in 2023.
This growth highlighted the resilience of Nigeria’s commercial capital amid economic reforms and ongoing infrastructure investments, although the tax-to-GDP ratio remained low at 2.3 per cent, reflecting the need for enhanced revenue mobilisation efforts.
On key assumptions, Lagos said its GDP growth is projected to grow from N54.77 trillion in 2024 to N66.47 trillion in 2025, while real GDP growth is expected to range between 5.02 per cent and 6.49 per cent.
The service sector, it said, will continue its expansion, complemented by improvements in agriculture and industrial production. Economic stability, according to the document, is expected to be aided by a decline in petrol prices and a stable naira/ dollar exchange rate.
Also, the Lagos State Government anticipated generating N2.79 trillion in revenue for 2025, emphasising the need for increased fiscal discipline and diversification of revenue sources, remaining a key destination for inves-
tors looking to tap into Nigeria’s vibrant economic landscape.
Delivering the keynote address titled: ‘Bridging the Revenue Gap in Lagos: Innovative Pathways to Enhanced Revenue Mobilisation’, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, emphasised the need for Lagos to increase its revenue generation to match its economic ambitions.
“Lagos is big, but its revenue is small, collecting less than 2 per cent of GDP. While some progress has been made, we still have a big room for improvement, and the time to change this narrative is now,” Oyedele opined.
He highlighted three key strategies for Lagos to improve revenue collection, including property taxation, expansion of personal income tax base, particularly by leveraging technology to capture high-income earners and tax harmonisation.
“A better approach to taxation is not to tax the seed, but the fruit. Let businesses grow, and tax them fairly on their successes,” he stated. He also called for formalising the informal sector, particularly among digital entrepreneurs, content creators, and event planners, to capture untapped revenue. Oyedele called for bold action, comparing Lagos’ potential to global success stories like Dubai and Singapore.
“With the right reforms, Lagos can generate up to N5 trillion annually in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)” Oyedele added.
“The Atlantic basin has many viable alternatives for them to turn to, including from the Mediterranean and North Sea but it all depends on the economics and terms on which they get it,” Hurburun said.

Much Ado About El-Rufai’s Defection to SDP
John shiklam writes on former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s political Trajectory vis a vis his recent defection from the a ll Progressives Congress to the Social Democratic Party.
Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) did not come as a surprise to keen observers of the former Kaduna state governor.
His body language, after he was denied ministerial appointment by President BolaTinubu in 2023, spoke volumes about his intentions.
Indications that he may dump the APC started showing when, in March 2024, he visited the National Chairman of the SDP in Abuja. El-Rufai’s visit to the SDP chairman fuelled insinuations that he may leave the APC for the SDP.
El-Rufai was a founding member of the APC and a two-term governor of Kaduna state, elected on the platform of the APC.
On Monday, March 10, 2025, thirteen months after his visit to the SDP national secretariat in Abuja, the former governor announced his resignation from the party and his decision to join the SDP.
In his resignation letter, published on his Facebook page, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with the APC’s leadership, accusing it of abandoning the party’s founding principles and treating members with contempt.
“Today, 10th March 2025, I have submitted a letter resigning my membership of the APC to my ward in Kaduna, effective immediately”, the resignation letter reads.
He said, “Prior to this step, I had concluded consultations with my mentors, colleagues, and loyalists across the country about the future.
“I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities.
“Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God.
“I therefore call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race”.
Before his defection, El-Rufai had criticised the party and its leadership, including his exclusion from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet despite his support during the election.
Speaking in Abuja in January 2025, at a national conference on strengthening democracy, El-Rufai described the current state of governance and opposition in Nigeria as a “national emergency.”
Highlighting alleged lack of internal democracy within the APC, he declared that, “No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show; it’s a zero-man show. You cannot afford to have illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people as your leaders. This is why we end up with the poor leadership we have today”.
He maintained that “the problems that led to the formation of the APC remained unresolved, but I no longer believe the APC is interested in addressing them”.
Apparently hinting about his plans to defect, he said the distance between him and the party was widening.
El-Rufai called on opposition parties to form a broad coalition to challenge the ruling APC.
His exit from the APC is probably the best option for his political survival, especially, considering the fact that those he fought and chased out of the party in Kaduna state, have all returned to the party.
In 2018, El-Rufai had a running battle
with Senators Suleiman Hunkuyi, Shehu Sani and Danjuma La’ah who represented Kaduna north, central and southern senatorial zones respectively for rejecting the $350m loan from the World Bank.
The three Senators had blocked the former governor from collecting the loan on the grounds that Kaduna was the second most indebted state after Lagos, and taking the loan was going to enslave the people.
For blocking the loan, El-Rufai ensure that Sani and Hukunyi both members of APC at the time did not return to the Senate in 2019 and frustrated them out of the party.
At a political rally in Kaduna in 2018, El-Rufai rained curses on them for rejecting the World Bank loan and asked residents of Kaduna to shave their heads and beard when the Senators come to Kaduna from Abuja.
Sani eventually left the opposition PDP, while Hunkuyi left for the New
Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) where he was the party’s governorship candidate in 2019.
Now that Sani and Hunkuyi have returned to the APC, including La’ah who recently defected from the PDP to the APC, the party would have been too hot for el-Rufai to stay.
Analysts opined that with this scenario in Kaduna, El-Rufai stand little or no chance of making any serious impact in the APC.
Furthermore, the allegations following investigations by the Kaduna State House of Assembly that N423 billion was embezzled by government officials during El-Rufai’s eight-year reign in Kaduna, is a minus to his political relevance in the APC, even though the former governor had denied the allegations.
Observers of Kaduna politics, are of the opinion that with political heavyweights like Senator Shehu Sani, Senator Suleiman Hukunyi and former governor Ramalan Yero, among several others in APC, El-Rufai no longer has relevance and influence in the party.
In its reaction to the defection, the Kaduna State chapter of the APC said that it will

not lose sleep over the defection of El-Rufai to the SDP.
In an interview with newsmen on Monday in Kaduna, Yahaya Baba-Pate, State Secretary of the APC, said the APC remained unperturbed by the defection of the former governor.
According to Baba-Pate, the party is focused on delivering Kaduna to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in 2027.
He expressed confidence in the party’s growing strength in Kaduna, noting that high-profile politicians in the state are joining the party daily.
“We are unperturbed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to another party.
Our main focus in Kaduna is on how to deliver the state to both President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in 2027.
“The APC in Kaduna State is growing day by day, judging from the calibre of politicians streaming into the party on a daily basis.
“So, we are not disturbed by anybody defecting to another party based on our governor’s inclusive governance in the state.
“We are not disturbed, and we are not going to lose our sleep over El-rufai’s moves. The party in the state is growing more than before,” Baba-Pate said.
El-Rufai’s sojourn into politics started in 1999 with his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Though he has always insisted that he had never been a card carrying member of the party, he served in various capacities under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, first as the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in 1999.
In 2003, Obasanjo appointed him Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). These appointments made him visible in the Nigerian political scene.
In 2013, he was among the politicians who founded the APC, a coalition of four opposition parties that merged to uproot the PDP from power.
He contested for the governor of Kaduna state on the platform of the APC in Kaduna state and won.
According to him, former President Muhammadu Buhari asked him to run for the governorship.
Before running for the election, El-Rufai was said to be little known in Kaduna state and had no political structure.
It was learnt that he rode on the popularity of people like the incumbent governor, Senator Uba Sani, Suleiman Hukunyi, Shehu Sani among several others to defeat Ramalan Yero who was the incumbent governor and candidate of the ruling PDP at the time.
In 2019, he won the governorship for a second term after a keenly contested election with Isah Ashiru of the PDP.
His critics described his administration as one of the worst and most divisive in Kaduna state. He is also accused of discriminating and marginalising the Southern Kaduna people.
Many people also allegedly lost their homes and means of livelihood as a result of his demolition. Several court cases are said to be in various courts challenging some of El-Rufai’s demolitions.
His eight-year administration, according to his critics, was traumatising to many residents.
“He left Kaduna worst than he made it. He widened the gulf among Muslims and Christians and discriminated against Southern Kaduna people in terms of projects.
According to Mohammed Aliyu, a member of the APC in Kaduna state, “El-Rufai has no support base in Kaduna.
According to him: “The few people that are supporting him, are either his appointees when he was governor or those who benefit from contracts by his government. So his defection to the SDP, as far as I am concerned, is of no effect to the APC.”
What impact will El-Rufai make in SDP? This will be determined in 2027.

Experts to Tackle Declining Consumer Purchasing Power at Summit
Following the statement by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in early January 2025 that manufacturing sector in Nigeria recorded unsold goods worth N1.4 trillion, which was attributed to inflationary pressures and declining consumer purchasing power, the organisers of The
Industry Summit, has designed the sixth edition of the summit to address the consumer preferences in a troubled fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).
Announcing the 2025 theme: “Understanding Changing Consumer Preferences in Troubled FMCG’s Space, the convener of The
Industry Summit & Awards (TIES),” the organizer, Goddie Ofose, said the dwindling purchasing power of consumers had remained one of the major reasons why manufacturing sector declared heavy inventory loss in 2024. He therefore advised that organisations must design innovative approach to tackling
the menace in 2025. According to him, “Inflationary impact is real and it has continued to dig some holes in the pockets of consumers, which in turn results in consumers’ preferences. Manufacturers must adapt to the shifting consumer preferences if they must survive.”

Reviving Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Sector as Pathway to Growth and Sustainability
Nigeria’s renewable energy sector is receiving a much-needed boost through a collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, FMIST, and Hecate Global Renewables, HGR. Under the leadership of the minister, Chief Uche G. Nnaji, this partnership aims to revive stalled solar projects, unlock economic opportunities, and drive the country’s transition to clean energy. With billions of naira already invested in incomplete initiatives, this renewed effort holds the potential to reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape, Precious Ugwuzor writes
The collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology (FMIST) and Hecate Global Renewables (HGR) brings renewed hope to Nigeria's renewable energy sector. This partnership represents not just the diligent efforts of Minister Chief Uche G. Nnaji but also has the potential to revive previously stalled projects in this field.
HGR's expertise in developing, building, owning, and operating renewable energy projects will be crucial. Under the leadership of Minister Nnaji, discussions held during a recent roundtable meeting made it clear that part of this collaboration will involve identifying and reviving abandoned solar power projects scattered across Nigeria. While the financial implications of these efforts are significant, let's take a closer look at some key projects.
Nigeria's renewable energy sector has faced numerous challenges due to stalled solar projects, which have trapped billions of naira and hindered the country's transition to a clean energy future.
Take the Abuja Solar Power Project, for instance. Launched in 2016, this ambitious initiative aimed to generate 1,200 MW of electricity. With around $1 billion (approximately N450 billion) already invested, its continua-
tion has been jeopardized by various challenges over the past six years. The new agreement with HGR aims to address these issues and revitalise the project for the benefit of citizens.
Another project poised for revitalization is the Kaduna Solar Power Project.
Launched in 2017 with a target of generating 200 MW, it has encountered significant technical difficulties, having already consumed $500 million (approximately N225 billion) in various development stages. FMIST's recent initiatives aim to reverse this unfavourable trend.
Similarly, the Kano Solar Power Project, initiated in 2018, plans to generate 100 MW of electricity. Despite an investment of approximately N90 billion, progress has been hampered by regulatory and other challenges. With HGR's experience in navigating similar issues globally, this partnership is expected to implement effective solutions to accelerate progress.
Additionally, both the Enugu and Sokoto Solar Power Projects, started in 2020 and 2019, respectively, intended to generate 20 MW and 50 MW of electric-

Training in Lagos and Ogun
security agencies in strategic planning is essential for achieving lasting security stability.
As Nigeria confronts an ever-evolving security landscape, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has taken decisive steps to enhance its operational readiness and interagency collaboration through an intensive training programme.
The annual Operations Planning Cadre, held at the Army Officers’ Mess in Marina, Lagos, focused on strengthening security coordination across Lagos and Ogun states.
With the theme “Enhancing Operational Readiness Through Effective Planning, Collaboration and Capacity Development,” the training brought together personnel from the military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and other security agencies.
This joint initiative aimed to refine strategic planning, improve operational synergy, and foster better cooperation among security forces.
Building Capacity for Operational Success
Also speaking at the event, Major General Baba Umaru Yahya, Commander of the Nigerian Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, highlighted the indispensable role of training, discipline, and commitment in achieving operational success.
“The discussion around military operations remains central to national security, especially as Nigeria faces an array of evolving threats,” he said. “The involvement of various security agencies has become even more critical in countering non-state actors who pose risks to public safety.”
ity. However, after investments of N22.5 billion and N45 billion, respectively, these projects remain incomplete. In response to these challenges, the Minister emphasized the FMIST's commitment to align with President Tinubu's renewed hope agenda through effective actions.
The partnership between FMIST and HGR undoubtedly provides a renewed sense of hope for Nigeria's renewable energy sector, this time with a practical approach.
The public can be assured that this collaboration has the potential to revive abandoned projects, leveraging HGR's international expertise in renewable energy development.
As Nigeria moves toward clean and green energy, it is crucial to learn from past mistakes and ensure that future projects are executed with care, efficiency, and effectiveness. The country cannot afford to waste any more resources on incomplete initiatives.
Through cross-functional partnerships and multisectoral engagements, FMIST, under the leadership of Chief Uche G. Nnaji, is opening new opportunities. These efforts in the renewable energy sector are expected to create numerous jobs and significantly enhance sustainable economic growth.
Strengthening Security Coordination
At the event, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, underscored the importance of the training as a critical platform for refining operational strategies and reinforcing collaboration among security agencies. He noted that the Operations Planning Cadre serves as a forum for officers to exchange ideas, develop innovative approaches to security challenges, and enhance inter-agency cooperation.
“The inclusion of multiple security agencies in this training ensures a more realistic approach to modern security challenges, reflecting the complexities of inter-agency cooperation in real-world operations,” Major General Mijinyawa stated. He further emphasised that the training was designed to equip officers with essential planning and leadership skills, enabling them to execute security mandates more effectively.
The collaborative effort aligns with the Nigerian Army’s broader objective of fostering a seamless security framework across its Area of Responsibility (AOR). Given the diverse security threats facing Nigeria—including insurgency, banditry, and transnational crimes—the integration of
Major General Yahya stressed that the increasing security demands on the Nigerian Armed Forces require continuous professional development and enhanced support for civil authorities. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to proactive security measures, improved inter-agency cooperation, and mission-specific training.
“The constantly shifting nature of security threats underscores the need for continuous capacity development. This operations planning cadre is expected to provide officers with the necessary expertise to tackle these challenges effectively,” he concluded.
A Holistic Approach to National Security
The Nigerian Army’s emphasis on inter-agency collaboration reflects a strategic shift towards a more integrated security framework. By bringing together key stakeholders in the defence and security sectors, the training aims to enhance operational effectiveness and ensure a coordinated response to security threats.
As Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, initiatives such as the Operations Planning Cadre serve as vital mechanisms for strengthening national security. The Nigerian Army’s commitment to training and capacity development remains a crucial component in ensuring stability, safeguarding communities, and addressing emerging threats in an increasingly dynamic security environment.

To Deepen Nigeria’s Investment Market, Parthian Capital Floats Two Funds
Nume Ekeghe
Parthian Capital has introduced two investment funds, reinforcing its position in Nigeria’s financial markets and aligning with the federal government’s vision of a $1 trillion economy.
The newly launched Parthian Money Market Fund and Parthian Dollar Fund offer diversified, high-yielding opportunities for investors navigating a volatile interest rate environment.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of Parthian Partners, underscored the strategic importance of the funds in fostering capital formation.
“Parthian Capital launching two funds today is a testament to the company’s growth and its contribution toward achieving President Bola Tinubu’s vision of a $1 trillion economy. We firmly believe that capital formation is essential for building a strong economy, and having an asset management company allows us to
facilitate that. The money market fund, in particular, offers a safe investment vehicle with high yields. Given the current interest rate environment, where we have seen rates spike as high as 20–23 per cent, we expect yields to remain elevated for some time,” he said.
Beyond domestic economic conditions, Olusoga also highlighted global macroeconomic trends shaping investment strategies.
He said, “The tariffs imposed by the U.S. and the countermeasures from Canada and China will have inflationary consequences worldwide. With this in mind, I don’t see interest rates dropping significantly in the near future. At best, they may remain at their current levels, as reducing them could prove unsustainable.”
Representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Nigerian Exchange (NGX) confirmed that both funds have undergone rigorous regulatory scrutiny and met
all compliance requirements.
Lagos Head at the SEC, John Briggs said: “I want to reconfirm that two funds have been lodged with the Commission and that the necessary regulatory position has been established regarding these filings. The approval granted was based on a thorough regulatory review, which was followed diligently before the final approval was issued.”
Chief Executive Officer of NGX Regulation Limited, Femi Shobanjo, highlighted that Parthian Capital’s funds are set to be listed on NGX, further integrating them into the country’s capital markets.
He said, “As a firm with a trading license on our exchange, Parthian Group is no stranger to regulation. The two funds being launched today are in the process of being listed, further strengthening their connection to our ecosystem. We at NGX fully support their initiatives and will continue to stand by them as they drive market innovation through new products and technology.”
ABC Transport’s Diversification Excites Investors
ABC Transport Plc has experienced a significant uptick in its stock performance, with shares rising 22% year-to-date, climbing from N1.23 at the start of January to N1.50 as of March 11, 2025.
This surge has elevated the company’s market capitalization from N2.942 billion to N3.588 billion over the same period.
Analysts attribute this positive momentum to ABC Transport’s strategic diversification initiatives, notably its substantial investment in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks and the establishment of ABC Cargo Limited, a fully independent logistics division.
Over the past six months, ABC Transport has invested over N8 billion naira in acquiring CNG-powered and other specialized trucks, underscoring its commitment to sustainable and cost-effective transportation solutions.
This move not only reduces the company’s carbon footprint but also lowers operational costs by decreasing reliance
on diesel fuel. The adoption of CNG technology represents a crucial step in ABC Transport’s sustainability journey, aligning with global environmental standards.
In a bid to diversify its service offerings, ABC Transport launched ABC Cargo Limited, an autonomous logistics division. This new entity is poised to enhance the company’s market presence in the logistics sector, providing specialized services that cater to the evolving needs of clients across Nigeria and the West African region.
The company’s recent financial results have further bolstered investor confidence.
For the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, ABC Transport reported a pre-tax profit of N634.7 million, a remarkable turnaround from the pre-tax loss of N260.1 million recorded in 2023.
Total revenue surged to N12.6 billion from N7.1 billion in the previous year, with significant
contributions from loads and waybills (N4 billion), sales of vehicle spares and speed governors (N2.8 billion), and haulage operations (N2.8 billion).
Speaking on these developments, the Managing Director, Mr Jude Nneji commended that the company’s leadership has also taken other strategic steps towards sustaining growth in these new segments.
For instance, it has invested heavily in a new maintenance facility in Calabar and also improved its driver training facilities.
These strategic initiatives and robust financial performance have positioned ABC Transport favorably in the market, reflecting a strong buy trend that commenced in 2024 and has persisted into 2025.
As the company continues to innovate and expand its operations, it remains a focal point for investors seeking sustainable and profitable opportunities in the transportation and logistics sector.

TETFund Moves to Improve Power Supply in Tertiary Institutions
Kuni Tyessi in Abuja
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has revealed it is introducing a special intervention to address the issue of incessant power failure in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Chairman, Board of Trustees of TETFund, Hon. Aminu Masari, disclosed this on Wednesday while inaugurating the steering committee on Alternative Energy Solution Initiative in tertiary institutions.
Masari, a former governor of Katsina State, said the initiative was part of the Fund’s commitment to support government’s efforts to have a steady power supply to tertiary
institutions across the country.
He stressed the importance of power supply, saying that it was critical to learning and research, which was lacking in most of tertiary institutions.
“We all know the combination of many factors to include the increase in tariff which has become unbearable to these institutions coupled with other issues,” he stated. According to him, power demand, among other things, was critical to learning and research, preparing the way for the development of the students.
The committee, which has Hon. Sunday Adepoju, a member of
TETFund BoT as chairman, was given an initial two months to summit the preliminary report. It will, however, be part of the implementation team.
It would be recalled that the federal government had plans to provide power supply to tertiary institutions through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The REA aims to provide captive solar hybrid power plants to 15 federal tertiary institutions and two teaching hospitals. This initiative was part of the government’s efforts to increase electricity access to underserved Nigerians.
The lack of power supply has been a significant challenge for tertiary
No More Neglect of Abia's Oil Bearing Communities, Says Otti
Flags-off reconstruction of 11.1km Owaza-Obehie road
Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo in
Umuahia
Governor Alex Otti has rekindled the hope of Abia's oil producing communities, saying the era of neglect has come to its end as the area is now readied for accelerated development.
He gave the assurance yesterday when he flagged-off reconstruction of the 11.1 kilometre Obehie-UmudobiaOwaza road in Ukwa West Local Government, saying the road would be ready in 12 months.
The oil bearing communities of Abia are located in Ukwa West, an area which has over the years been receiving the short end of the stick in terms of development.
But speaking at St. Ann Secondary School, Obehie Asa, venue of the flag-off event, Otti said that Ukwa would witness significant changes in due course.
"This project is therefore not just about creating access to the towns and villages along these corridor, it is more about reviving dormant economic

According to him, the completion of the Obehie-Owaza road which links the communities in Ukwa West would boost marketability and viability of the Abia Industrial and Innovative Park(AIIP).
In addition, the governor said the establishment of a modular refinery, which according to him, the federal government has approved, would further bring development to the oil-producing area.
He said the planned modular refinery to be cited inside the AIIP at Owaza, Ukwa West LG "will be built by H.I.S. Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited".
"I'll like to inform you that just a few days ago, we got the good news that the federal government has approved a modular refinery which would be cited inside the AIIP," he told the cheering crowd. Otti gave assurance his government would provide "every support we can give" we work together to create
a robust industrial cluster that will accelerate the rapid socio-economic development of the area and fast track the restoration of the years that has been lost to poor leadership".
"Today, we officially declare that the era of neglect of Ukwa and all the communities within the land is over.
"Ukwa shall no longer be a forgotten place. Your land will yield forth its best fruits and your barns shall never be empty again. You will enjoy the riches of the environment and the oil in your land shall bring you boundless prosperity," he said .
Otti further assured the oil communities that they "will not only get what is due (them) at the resource allocation table" but would enjoy the benefits of the interventionist agencies.
To this end, Otti said that various levers of his administration "shall collaborate extensively" with the Abia State Oil Producing Area Development Commission(ASOPADEC), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), among others "to restore the years that have been lost to the politics of exclusion and deceit".
institutions in Nigeria, affecting the learning environment and academic activities.
The provision of a reliable power supply is expected to improve the quality of education and research in these institutions.
According to Downer, "I have since discovered that Nigeria might be my ancestral home after all. This personal revelation set the tone for a productive discussion on strengthening the ties between the two nations, particularly in the areas of air services, trade, and investment."
The Ambassador highlighted the importance of improving and enhancing bilateral relations, including reviewing the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).
He said: "I have been tasked by my country to review and improve on the diplomatic engagements between Jamaica and Nigeria, especially concerning air services."
The Jamaican Ambassador also shared the growing interest in Nigerian culture, particularly Afrobeat music and Nollywood films, which are trending in Jamaica.
He noted this cultural exchange further reinforces the need for
enhanced diplomatic and air connectivity, adding: "There is no reason why we should not have a direct flight between our countries. Nigerians love Jamaica, and there is a rising demand for Jamaican spices in Nigeria."
A key area of focus during the meeting was the matter of air travel and connectivity. Ambassador Downer disclosed that Jamaica currently lacks a national carrier, relying on neighboring Trinidad and Tobago for air transport.
He proposed the idea of combining the BASA between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to address the air services gap, underscoring the increasing demand for travel from Nigeria to Jamaica.
This meeting marks a significant step towards reinforcing the bilateral ties between Jamaica and Nigeria and sets the stage for future collaboration in the aviation, trade, and cultural sector.
AKPABIO VS NATASHA: SENATE PRESENTS DEFENCE BEFORE IPU, SEEKS FAIR HEARING the business of the Senate and the conduct of its members.
“The disciplinary measure was, therefore, necessary and justified to restore order and uphold the integrity of the Senate of the country's foremost democratic institution,” the Senate added.
It therefore urged all foreign correspondents and responsible media houses to correct the socalled misrepresentations and avoid propagating falsehoods that undermine the integrity of Nigeria's legislative process.
“No senator, regardless of status, gender, or political affiliation, is above the rules of the Senate. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension was a direct consequence of her actions and nothing else. We urge the public and the media to disregard any false reports suggesting otherwise and to always seek the truth before spreading politically motivated narratives,” Ogbara added.
Meanwhile, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has told the President of the Senate, Akpabio, to ignore sponsored news about his office and concentrate on the job of nation building before him.
This was as a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSO), women groups and concerned citizens of Edo State embarked on a solidarity protest to condemn the alleged sexual harassment of Akpoti-Uduaghan by Akpabio.
They also decried the six-month suspension slammed on her by the 10th National Assembly.
Chairman of PANDEF, Godknows Igali, spoke at a dinner organised by Akpabio in honour of elders and leaders from the South South, after their visit to President Bola Tinubu,
on Tuesday.
A statement by Akpabio’s media aide, Jackson Udom, explained that Igali expressed satisfaction with the cordial relationship existing between Tinubu and the Senate President.
Igali said, “Forget about the sponsored news making the rounds about you and your office, but rest assured that we are strongly behind you.
“We are here today because there is the need for us to discuss with the president of this country on issues that affect us as a region. He was very pleased and he took time to listen to all our requests and he promised to act on them.
“It was also an opportunity for us to reiterate to Mr President that you, our son, as the President of the Senate, we are very pleased with you and we are very happy with the way both of you are working together in the overall interest of Nigerians.
"Let me assure you, on behalf of the men, women, boys, girls and the entire people of the Niger Delta region, that we are solidly behind you.”
In his response, Akpabio thanked the leaders and the elders for honouring his invitation to dine with him, promising to continue to make the zone proud by supporting the programmes of the President Tinubu-led administration towards making life bearable for Nigerians.
Meanwhile, a coalition of CSOs, women groups and concerned citizens of Edo State, yesterday protested to condemn the alleged sexual harassment of Akpoti-Uduaghan by Akpabio.
Also, condemning the six months suspension slammed on her by the
10th National Assembly, the protesters took their peaceful protest to the Edo State House of Assembly, Government House and the secretariat of the state council of the Nigeria Union of journalists, NUJ.
Grace Ese Obakina, who read from a petition addressed to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the state governor and the NUJ, on behalf of the group said, the group viewed the suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan on account of violating the house rules without even considering the claim of being sexually harassed an affront to workplace safety, justice, fairness, and equity.
"We, the above named group, as advocate and champions of the voices of the masses stand firmly on the side of the law and equity and as such condemns the perceived misogynistic behavior of the 10th National Assembly and the alleged case of sexual harassment against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and her subsequent suspension from the Nigerian Senate.
"Reports indicate that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a petition accusing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment and misogyny. Instead of addressing these serious allegations fairly and transparently, the Senate unexpectedly suspended her for six months for alleged breach of Senate rules and ethics.
"This action appears to be a blatant attempt to silence and dismiss the allegations of sexual harassment without due process. We implore you to consider our petition demanding justice for Senator Akpoti Uduaghan. It is imperative that an independent investigation be conducted into her allegations,” the groups said.

Umahi: No Part Will Be Left Behind in FG’s Bid to Connect Nigeria by Road
Says idea of Lagos-Calabar coastal highway conceived 25 years ago
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has pledged that no part of Nigeria will be left behind in President Bola Tinubu's bid to bequeath a befitting road infrastructure network to the country.
Umahi, according to a statement by the Director of Information in the ministry, Mohammed Ahmed, also commended the president for approving funding as well as providing leadership for the construction of the Sokoto-Badagry super highway.
The minister spoke during an inspection of a segment of the 258-kilometre, three-lane carriageway in section 2, Phase 2a in Gulumbe, Kebbi State, which he said, represents a significant portion of the 1,068-kilometre highway.
“This is a true reflection of Mr. President’s stance that every region of this country matters, and no region should be left behind or shortchanged,” he stated.
He noted that the idea of the coastal highway project, which runs from Lagos to Calabar, originated with the president during his tenure as governor of Lagos State, nearly 25 years ago, describing it as a dream
come true for him.
Addressing the narrative circulating on social media, which he referred to as “darkening counsel without knowledge,” the minister reaffirmed that the four ‘legacy’ road projects initiated by the president encompass all the six geopolitical zones of the country.
He further clarified that when aggregated, the northern zones account for 52 per cent of the roads.
In his address, the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, expressed his gratitude to the president for his support and the numerous projects being executed in the state.
He emphasised that the inspection underscores the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and transportation as vital enablers of growth, as outlined in the eight-point ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.
The Minister of State, Bello Goronyo, stated that the project was a promise kept by the president and that the road must be completed. “Mr. President is passionate about the welfare of every Nigerian, regardless of their origin,” he added.
The Minister of Budget and National Planning, and former Governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar
Bagudu, remarked that it was important to explore innovative financial models to fund important road infrastructure projects.
"As we all know, the world is no longer building infrastructure solely through government funding
but exploring innovative financing models. Mr. President, having invested in relationships, both in Nigeria and abroad, finds it easier to engage individuals and partners willing to contribute to funding these massive endeavours," he stated.
Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works, Olufunsho Adebiyi, welcomed dignitaries to the project site and promised that :“By the time you are here again, you will see it at a different level.”

Bamidele Leads Campaign Against Poverty, Trains 1,900
Gbenga Sodeinde in Ado Ekiti
In a concerted move to rid Ekiti State of unemployment and endemic poverty, the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has trained 1,900 youth and women in vocational and entrepreneurial trainings to uplift their economic potentials.

"This might not be enough to go round, but gradually we are providing the platform to lend the required help that can help the system.
“Unemployment is directly connected with the upsurge in crimes in our society and for us to overcome this, we must do what we ought to do as leaders to make our youth productive.
"We have various sections or interests; they shall be trained based on whichever they picked. And at the end of it all, we will encourage the beneficiaries, so that they can start off their own businesses".
Speaking at the event, one of the trainers and Consultant with Akgen Solutions Limited, Mr. Akanni Sanni, said the programme is expected to have a positive multiplier effect on the economy of the state within the next 12 months.

Lula Invites President Tinubu to Visit Brazil
A high-level delegation from Brazil, led by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Viera, arrived in Abuja on a visit aimed at boosting cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil in a move towards strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
The visit was also used to deliver an invitation of Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known mononymously as Lula, to President Bola Tinubu to visit Brazil in the nearest future.
The bilateral relations between the two nations dates back to Nigeria's independence in 1960.
During the visit, the Brazilian delegation is expected to engage in high-level talks with Nigerian officials, exploring opportunities for collaboration in areas such as agriculture, energy, and infrastructure development.
The two countries are also expected to sign several agreements aimed at strengthening their bilateral
ties.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, while hosting his Brazilian counterpart in his office on Wednesday, noted that Brazil was the only Latin American country to attend Nigeria's independence celebration, underscoring the strong historical ties between the two nations.
He said: “We share a lot in common, from our size and economies to our population and culture. This visit is a natural progression of our partnership.”
Tuggar, while citing their robust engagement between the two countries since independence, referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's visit to Brazil last year, where he attended the G20 summit and engaged in activities to strengthen bilateral ties. Tuggar emphasized the significance of the visit, saying, "We welcome you and your delegation warmly, and we're happy to see you here in Abuja. This visit is a continuation of
our efforts to strengthen the bond between our two countries."
In response, the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Viera, recalled his first meeting with Nigerian officials in Dubai in 2023 and the subsequent meeting between President Lula and President Tinubu in Addis Ababa in 2024.
Viera praised President Tinubu's participation in the G20 summit in Brazil last November, valuing Nigeria's contributions to the forum. He also extended an invitation from President Lula for President Tinubu to visit Brazil in the near future.
This visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, building on previous engagements since President Lula took office in January 2023. The Brazilian minister emphasized the importance of strategic dialogue and exploring deeper relations in various areas, including culture, economics, cooperation, education, and more.

Death Row Inmates in Nigeria Now
3,688, Ag NCoS CG Tells Senate
Says governors not willing to sign execution warrants
Sunday Aborisade in Abuja
The Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, yesterday said 3,688 prisoners are currently on death row in various correctional centres across the country.
He said the number rose from 3,590 in September 2024 to 3,688 in March 2025.
He said the figure represented a 2.73 per cent increase because additional 98 prisoners joined the existing ones on death row within six months.
The NCoS therefore sought strategic collaboration with the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS); Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent
Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to speed up the wheel of justice in the country.
Nwakuche revealed the figure yesterday while the Senate Committee on Interior chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole was screening him for the position of substantive controller-general.
Nwakuche was accompanied
by his Principal Staff Officer, Mr. Godwin Okosun; Deputy Controller of Corrections of NCoS, Mr. Babatunde Ogundare; and Assistant Controller General of NCoS, Mr. Ahmed Adagiri, among others, to the screening exercise.
He said the major challenges facing the correctional service in the country, was the issue of prisoners awaiting execution.
AbdulRazaq: FG's NELFUND Policy Empowers Children of Low-income Earners to Access Quality Higher Education
Hammed Shittu in Ilorin
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State yesterday said that, the student loan policy of the federal government will boost the hope of children of low-income earners to access quality higher education in the country.
AbdulRazaq stated this in Ilorin on Wednesday during a sensitization programme for students of tertiary institutions in the state.
The programme was organized by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) in partnership with the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Policy Formulation & Human Capital Development, Dr Adetola Ariyike Salau.
It was themed 'Empowering Students through Financial Inclusion and Entrepreneurship'.
AbdulRazaq commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the initiative
adding it will address the major challenge of youth acquiring tertiary education.
The governor said his administration is partnering NELFUND on the sensitization to ensure that students across the educational institutions in the state benefit from the scheme.
"There is a lot to be grateful to the federal government for creating an avenue like this. Like I said earlier, the major challenge facing the youth to gain access to quality education is lack of funding.
"So, providing this kind of opportunity is huge, and this is not just about money but empowerment,” the Governor said through Dr. Salau who represented him.
He added: "We are going to be rolling out more programmes, talking about how we are going to mentor and give them skills at different centers across the state.
"This is important because after finishing the school, what next? Do
they have the right skills so that they can be employable? So, we are going to partner with NELFUND to carry out this programme. That is very key because they all need to be carried along.”
Managing Director NELFUND, Akintunde Sanya, who spoke through Executive Director Operations, Mustapha lyal, said they had so far received over 400,000 applications across Nigerian institutions since the launch of their operation, out of which 70% had been cleared.
He said that thousands of students from Kwara State have benefited from the loan scheme with about N900m disbursed to the combined public institutions in the state.
NELFUND boss explained that after successful application, the agency pays the school fees of the beneficiaries into their institutions’ accounts, while their annual upkeep of N240,000 is paid into their individual accounts.

NDDC Donates Medical Items, Mattresses to Inmates of Benin Correctional Facility
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Wednesday, donated mattresses, drugs and mats to inmates of Benin Correctional facility.
The agency also renovated the water borehole and installed solar lights in the facility. The initiative which is aimed at improving the welfare of the inmates and decongestion of the facility, was done in collaboration with Peace and Development Projects, Velma Foundation, Benioni Akpa Development Foundation, and Lov Network Foundation.
Presenting the material to Officers
at the Benin Correctional Centre, along Sapele Road, Benin City, a representative of the NGOs, Mr. Mathias Ovie, said the initiative is also designed to address overcrowding in prisons by securing release of indigent inmates convicted of minor offences through payment of fines.
He disclosed that by this kind of intervention, the NDDC aimed to ease the burden on correctional facilities in the Niger Delta Region, while providing an opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society for deserving inmates. Ovie said part of the programme is the distribution of essential welfare materials to correctional centers across
the region. "The materials donated include sleeping mattresses, mats, and essential medical drugs to improve the living conditions and well-being of inmates. Additionally, operational vehicles of the correctional facilities will receive a boost through the provision of new tyres, ensuring the effective functioning of these facilities", he stated.
Ovie further noted that the NDDC’s intervention reflects its ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for the people of the Niger Delta, not only through infrastructure development but also through human-centered initiatives.
Prof. Wahab Egbewole, in his remarks, said the initiative is bringing relief to parents who have the responsibility to pay their students’ school fees, and urged students to enroll en masse and take advantage of the opportunity provided.
Egbewole, who was represented by Deputy VC Management Services Prof Adegboyega Fawale, hailed the federal government for the programme.
Vice Chancellor, Muhammad Kamal-deen University, urged the federal government to find means of incorporating private institutions into NELFUND, saying their students also want to benefit as bonafide Nigerians.
Other speakers at the programme, including deans of students’ affairs of the various institutions in the state, advised the students to explore the opportunity to advance their knowledge.
The acting comptroller-general said: “Inmates on death row are now 3688 from 3,590 in September 2024. State governors are part of our challenges.
“They refuse to execute inmates on the death row; neither do they commute their death sentence to life imprisonment.
“If they commute death sentences to life imprisonment, it is easier for us to distribute them to rural correctional facilities which are not as congested as those in urban correctional facilities.
“This is because the issue of congestion is a major urban phenomenon. Our correctional facilities in urban centres are more congested than those in rural areas.
“If we commute them to life sentencing, we will be able to distribute them equitably," the acting comptroller-general.
The acting comptroller-general pledged to collaborate with other security agencies more strategically to ensure that the issues of awaiting trials are permanently resolved so that the prison can be decongested.
He further emphasised collaboration and synergy specifically with the Nigeria Police, EFCC, DSS and ICPC, among others, to decisively address the challenge of awaiting trials in all the correctional facilities nationwide.
His words: “This is very important for any establishment to forge ahead.
An establishment like correctional centres cannot do anything without collaboration. We are the one at the recipient of the products of all the prosecuting agencies.”
According to him, the Nigeria Police, EFCC, DSS, Nigeria Custom Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and ICPC will bring all these products to our doorpost.
He said they expect to turn around and push them into society and be law-abiding citizens, adding “If we must meet this expectation, we need to collaborate more meaningfully.”
He lamented that the dispensation of justice system “is very slow. When I met with the Inspector-General of Police, I said some of your inmates are in our facilities. They have stayed up to five or six years. Some of them are not needed to be in our facilities any longer.
“If they have been sentenced, some of them will not spend up to two to three years in prisons. But they have stayed in our facilities for six years. For me, such persons should be discharged and acquitted. That is one area we must collaborate to decongest our facilities.
“I also met the Director-General of DSS on the need for collaboration. I met the Attorney-General of the Federation for the same reason. Some of the inmates are waiting for the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution.
“If we do not reach out to these agencies, our people will continue to be in prisons unnecessarily.”
Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Adams Oshiomhole said the committee would submit its report based on the performance of the Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Nigeria, European Union Strengthen Ties to Combat Transnational Organised Crimes
Troops facing increasing threats from IEDs, says NSA’s office Senate tasks security agencies as Benue youths burn senator's house Police kill notorious bandit kingpin, Saleh, in FCT
Sunday Aborisade and Linus Aleke in Abuja
The federal government and the European Union (EU) have expressed a commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties to combat transnational organised crimes. This emerged yesterday, when Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, hosted the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, and a delegation of EU officials, who were on a courtesy visit to the ministry.
The Nigerian authorities also sought the support and cooperation of EU on their ongoing police reform effort.
Relatedly, the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA) said the deployment of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by terrorists and other criminal gangs posed significant threat to counter-terrorism operations across all operational theatres.
That was as the Senate, yesterday, directed security agencies to urgently restore peace in Gyaruwa community in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State, following a violent youth protest ignited by incessant attacks by bandits in the area.
In Abuja, operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command killed a notorious bandit kingpin, Salisu Mohammed, alias "Dogo Saleh", in a well-coordinated, intelligence-led counter-kidnapping operation.
Gaidam, while hosting the EU ambassador, highlighted the police affairs ministry's efforts to enhance the effectiveness, accountability, and community engagement of the Nigeria Police.
He stated that EU’s expertise, resources, and experience in police reform and governance would be
instrumental to implementing the reforms in Nigeria.
The minister also acknowledged EU’s support for regional security initiatives, such as the West Africa Police Information System (WAPIS), which had improved coordination and helped to combate transnational organised crime.
He stressed the importance of securing continuous EU funding for the full implementation and sustainability of the WAPIS system.
Gaidam also expressed his commitment to exploring other EU-funded security initiatives and deepening collaboration in areas, such as intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism operations, and cybersecurity measures.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Anuma Nila, emphasised the need for strengthened collaboration between Nigeria and EU to address contemporary security challenges.
Nila acknowledged EU's support in Nigeria's security sector reforms, capacity building for law enforcement agencies, and efforts to combat transnational crimes, terrorism, and human trafficking.
Earlier, Mignot, said EU cooperation with the ministry was based on shared values and interests, respect for the rule of law, human rights, and democracy. He stated that the police were key in the expression of these values.
The ambassador pledged to work with Nigeria and ECOWAS to dismantle powerful criminal networks and protect lives.
ONSA: Troops Face Threats from IEDs
National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA) said the use of IEDs
by terrorists and other criminal elements posed significant threat to counter-terrorism operations.
The centre said the growing phenomenon was one of the gravest threats to frontline personnel.
National Coordinator of NCTCONSA, Major General Adamu Laka, made the revelations at the Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Symposium held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Laka said, "As we may all be aware, the use of Improvised Explosive Devices remains one of the gravest threats to our security personnel across various theatres of operations.
“Their impact extends beyond the frontline to civilian populations, critical infrastructure, such as power transmission lines, and national stability.
"What makes the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) threat even more concerning is the ease with which they can be fabricated using commercially available materials, making them a persistent and evolving challenge.
"This symposium is both timely and critical, as it provides a platform for experts and stakeholders to deliberate on innovative strategies to counter this threat. Our collective goal is to enhance national capabilities in preventing, detecting, and responding to IED incidents."
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of police anti-bomb squad, CP Patrick Atayero, said IEDs had become a weapon of choice for terrorists, insurgents, bank robbers and other malicious actors, causing devastating harm to innocent civilians, security personnel, and both public and private critical infrastructure.
Atayero said the symposium served as a critical platform and a wakeup call for state actors to share professional knowledge, expertise and best practices
Zulum Inaugurates Construction of 100 Houses in Hawul
Michael Olugbode in Maiduguri
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has launched the construction of 100 houses in Azare, the headquarters of Hawul Local Government Area of the state.
The project, which is part of the 600-housing scheme for teachers in 5 local government areas flagged-off on Tuesday, is aimed at reducing the housing deficit faced by teachers across the state.
During his visit to Hawul, Governor Zulum also inspected two other ongoing projects, including the permanent
site for the newly established National Orthopedic Hospital, Azare, which was donated to the federal government by Borno State government, and the construction site for the new General Hospital in Shafa.
Zulum expressed satisfaction with the support from the Azare community for the project, stating it indicates that sustainability will be ensured.
He said: “This is a very good brief we received from the engineer. He summarises everything. The most important take-away from him is that the community is supporting

The governor assured that the reconstruction work would be completed soon, and the hospital would be officially handed over to the federal government for its take-off.
He said: “On my part as the governor of Borno State, I will continue to do my best to ensure this project has come to fruition. Now that the CMD has been appointed, I will meet with the CMD tomorrow and discuss the way forward, most importantly.

Senate Tasks Security Agencies on Benue
The Senate directed security agencies to urgently restore peace in Gyaruwa community, Gwer-West Local Govern- ment Area of Benue State.
That was after a violent protest by youths ignited by incessant attacks by bandits in the area.
The red chamber also urged the Benue State government to enforce open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law to control the activities of herders operating within the state.
The resolution followed a motion by Titus Zam (Benue North-West senator) whose house was torched by the youths during the protest.
Zam, who is Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Businesses, expressed concerns over the persistent attacks by bandits disguised as herders in the state.
Minority Leader, Abba Moro, who seconded the motion, complained that residents of the state were attacking elected representatives.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio mandated the Senate Committees on National Intelligence, Army, Navy and Defence to visit the community.
Akpabio sympathised with victims of the attacks and urged the state government to enforce open grazing prohibition and ranching.
He said the senate would soon engage heads of security agencies in the country to discuss the insecurity.
Police Kill Notorious Bandit Kingpin, Saleh, in FCT
Operatives of the FCT Police Command killed a notorious bandit kingpin, Salisu Mohammed, alias "Dogo Saleh", in a well-coordinated operation.
The command said the killing of the bandit followed an intense counter-kidnapping operation aimed at dismantling a syndicate responsible for violent crimes along the KadunaLokoja-Enugu highway and within the FCT.
A statement by the command's spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, a Superintendent of Police, revealed that one officer, an Inspector from the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, sustained minor injuries during the encounter and had since been treated and discharged.
Stating that the police recorded no other casualties during the operation, Adeh said, "On March 4, 2025, at approximately 11:14pm, leveraging intelligence provided by the arrested suspect, operatives launched a high-risk follow-up operation to dismantle his gang.
"The suspect led the AntiKidnapping Unit to Kwasau Forest, Kagarko LGA, Kaduna State, where his gang, led by one Abdu Musa, alias "Kanabaro", had established a major
hideout.
“Upon arrival, the police team was ambushed by armed bandits attempting to free the suspect. The operatives swiftly engaged the criminals in a fierce gun battle, displaying superior tactical expertise and resilience. The bandits were ultimately overpowered and forced to flee into the forest with severe gunshot wounds."
Adeh explained that the suspect sustained fatal gunshot wounds inflicted by his own gang during the crossfire, and was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The police spokesperson recalled, "On March 3, 2025, acting on credible intelligence regarding the movement of bandits into the FCT, the Officer-inCharge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit led operatives to block their access routes.
“After meticulous tracking, the operatives successfully intercepted and arrested Salisu Mohammed at Gidan Abe Forest while he was en route to Bwari Area Council, FCT.
"Salisu Mohammed, a 21-year-old Fulani man from Baban Saural village, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was identified as a notorious hitman for bandit leaders operating in Rijana Forest, Kaduna State."
She said Saleh had terrorised communities along major highways, kidnapping unsuspecting victims and extorting huge ransoms.
NSIB Calls for Stronger Stakeholder Collaboration to Improve Transport Safety
Kasim Sumaina in Abuja
The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders to enhance transportation safety across all sectors.
Director General, NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jnr., underscored the urgent need for deeper collaboration among industry players to drive meaningful safety improvements.
Badeh made the call on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents Association (ATACA) executive members, to NSIB headquarters in Abuja.
He commended ATACA’s leadership for fostering engagement and emphasised the critical
role of the media in amplifying safety awareness. The NSIB DG noted that transportation safety should not be the responsibility of regulators alone but a collective effort among policymakers, operators, journalists, and the public.
He called for a unified approach across all modes of transport - aviation, road, rail, and maritime - to create a robust safety culture and prevent accidents.
According to him, "the bureau’s mandate now extends beyond aviation to include all transportation accidents, there is an even greater need for synergy."
He, therefore appealed for continuous dialogue and collaboration, particularly in knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives, to ensure all stakeholders are aligned with global best practices in safety
management. Speaking earlier, Chairman, Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents Association (ATACA), Ejike Ejike, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to working closely with NSIB and other stakeholders to enhance public understanding of transportation safety.
He called for regular engagement and strategic collaboration to bridge communication gaps and foster proactive safety measures. He opined that the visit signals a pivotal step toward stronger industry-wide cooperation. He words, "To achieve a safer and more efficient transportation system, all stakeholders must commit to continuous collaboration, information sharing, and joint problem-solving. The time to act is now."

FG Urges MOFI to Optimise Assets, EnsureTransparency Demands
Ndubuisi Francis in Abuja
The federal government has tasked the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to entrench transparency and accountability in its operations while optimising the management of government assets within and outside the country.
This was aimed at not only unlocking value that benefits all Nigerians but also to facilitate growth across key sectors of the economy.
Minister of State Finance, Dr.
roadmap on remuneration, valuation of assets worldwide
Doris Uzoka-Anite, made the call in Abuja, yesterday, when she received a high-level delegation from MOFI, led by its Managing Director, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang.
She also urged the organisation to develop and submit a roadmap for the remuneration and valuation of all Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) assets within and outside Nigeria with milestones and timelines.
She observed that globally, government assets are fundamental
resources that when effectively managed could significantly contribute to the economic development of countries, generate revenues, and enhance public service delivery.
Uzoka-Anite stated that effective public assets management was crucial to unlocking substantial economic potential worldwide.
According to her, countries like Australia, United Kingdom and Singapore have implemented robust assets management policies that integrate financial management,
assets life cycle management, and strategic planning.
As part of strategic alignment and value delivery, the minister urged MOFI to ensure transparency and accountability in its operation in order to deliver value to Nigerians in alignment with its core mandate.
This, she added, would enable it to act as a trusted custodian and active manager of the federal government asset.
She further called on MOFI to come out with strategies that will
WIKE: HEAVENS WON'T FALL IF FUBARA IS IMPEACHED, GOV LOCKED OUT OF ASSEMBLY
the governor indicating his interest to bring his appropriation bill to the floor of the House.
Spokesperson of the House and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Dr Enemi Alabo-George, described the claims of the governor as a mere comedy skit.
George recalled that on March 3, the House of Assembly wrote to the governor requesting him to bring the 2025 appropriation bill to the lawmakers following of the judgement of the Supreme Court.
"We were the ones, who immediately after that judgement appealed to the governor to bring his appropriation bill. We acted immediately because we have the interest of the state at heart and didn't want Rivers people to suffer any harm.
"Despite withholding our entitlements for over a year and demolishing our chambers, we still wanted him to hasten up the presentation in the interest of the progress of Rivers.
"We indicated our intentions in that letter and even gave him a timeframe because of the urgency of the matter. To regularise his appointments, we also urged him during our subsequent sitting to submit the names of his nominees for the positions of commissioners and some boards' membership for screening and confirmation.
"But the governor rebuffed our pleas. We sent employees of the Assembly to deliver these resolutions to him but as usual they turned them down at the gate and even brutalised them. We resorted to engaging the services of a courier company.
“He still did not heed our call forgetting that there are essential services like hospitals, schools and others to be funded. Our intention was to finish everything about the budget on March 15th so that we could send necessary information and documents to relevant agencies of the government to allow the release of Rivers allocations at the end of March. But with what he is doing, we don't know what he wants to achieve.
“How can he turn around to claim that we blocked him from re-presenting his budget? This is the height of sincerity. We even need the budget to be passed because the governor has been owing us our entitlements for more than a year and without the budget we can't get our entitlements.
"The governor and his team simply and deliberately acted Wednesday's drama with a singular motive to tarnish the image of the Assembly. The governor is simply playing to the gallery to whip up unnecessary sentiments. But it has backfired because the truth has come out."
PANDEF, while reacting to the development, described the action of the Amaewhule-led Assembly as provocative.
A chieftain of PANDEF, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, said denying the governor access to the Assembly complex was not an insult to Siminalayi Fubara as a person, but to the people of Rivers State in general.
“The Governor was elected by millions of Rivers people. As the chief executive officer of the state, he has unhindered access to all the facilities within the state. Blocking him from entering the complex is a direct insult and embarrassment to the people of Rivers State.
“It is now very clear that the governor is ready for peace. But these people are not ready for peace. You can see that by their action. How can you bar a sitting governor from gaining access to a facility that belongs to the state as a chief executive officer of that the governor continues to tow the path of peace despite the insult and provocation.
“I appeal that he implements all the decisions stipulated by the Supreme Court judgment, even though, I did not agree with some of those decisions. Let him implement them. Rivers people are watching, the world is watching,” he said.
Sara-Igbe noted that Fubara has always wanted peace, adding, "That was why on the advice of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he withdrew the case he had against these lawmakers last year even when they refused to withdraw theirs."
PANDEF Seeks Win-Win
Outcome,
Urges
President to Take Definite Steps on Crisis
Speaking after their meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, PANDEF's co-Chairman and the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, said, it was concerning that the crisis had persisted.
“Despite Mr. President’s fatherly
intervention, the crisis persists due to conflicting and contradictory court rulings. The instability in Rivers State, a key economic hub, poses serious risks to the nation’s revenue base," he said.
He commended Fubara for his public commitment to abide by the Supreme Court ruling but warned that tensions remained high.
He said, “We have established a High-Level Peace and Reconciliation Committee chaired by Obong Victor Attah to mediate, yet full cooperation has been elusive.”
He urged Tinubu to impress it upon all stakeholders the importance of peace, emphasising that “no party should be considered superior to the other, and a win-win outcome must be sought outside the courts.”
Beyond the Rivers crisis, PANDEF pressed for the immediate signing into law of the South-South Development Commission bill.
The group clarified that the proposed commission was distinct from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which focuses on oil-related issues beyond the South-South region.
“The NDDC serves oil-producing states across Nigeria, just like the HYPPADEC was created for hydroelectric power-producing areas. The SouthSouth Development Commission is necessary to drive holistic regional development,” PANDEF stated.
The leaders also called on the federal government to revisit the 2002 International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling that ceded the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.
They lamented that the decision displaced thousands of Nigerians and led to economic hardship for Cross River State.
“We do not wish to dwell on past mistakes, but we urge the government to mitigate the devastating impact of this decision on affected communities,” King Diete-Spiff said.
PANDEF also raised the alarm over worsening insecurity in the South-South, citing increased kidnappings, attacks, and sea piracy, and warned that criminal elements might be migrating southward due to intensified security operations in other parts of the country.
“If left unchecked, communities may resort to self-help, which could escalate tensions. We call for enhanced security measures and the urgent establishment of a Coast Guard to secure our coastal areas,” the group stated.
It decried the poor state of critical infrastructure in the region, particularly major highways and seaports and urged the federal government to prioritise the completion of key roads.
The roads, it claimed, included the East-West Road and Calabar-Itu-Ikot Ekpene Road, and support the development of deep-sea ports in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Edo States.
PANDEF advocated increased local participation in the oil and gas sector, calling for more Niger Delta indigenes to be appointed to top management positions in NNPC and other industry parastatals.
“We assure the President of our continued cooperation in sustaining and enhancing oil production. However, illegal refining and oil theft must be addressed through the establishment of modular refineries and the release of the Gas Flare Penalty Fund,” the group added.
PANDEF made a renewed call for fiscal federalism, urging Tinubu to champion constitutional reforms that would grant states greater control over their resources.
“Your Excellency has long been an advocate of true federalism. This is the key reform that will propel Nigeria toward rapid and holistic development,” PANDEF emphasised.
Expressing their support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working with the President for national progress.
“Your success will be our collective success,” King Diete-Spiff further said.
Again,
INC Warn against Fubara's Impeachment
The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has reiterated its position that if the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was impeached for any reason, the consequences of such action would be too heavy for the Nigerian state to bear economically.
This came as Ogoni group and oil communities warned against any inciting comments that could put the state on fire.
The position of the INC followed the inability of the governor to gain access to the State Assembly Complex, where he went to present the 2025 appropriation bill to the 27 lawmakers as ordered by the recent Supreme Court
economically impact the lives of Nigerians, especially in the area of job creation, and also ensure effective diversification of its investments across different industries, sectors and assets classes to enhance resilience.
The minister underscored the need for MOFI to partner and collaborate with other ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of the federal government as well as world bodies in order to function more effectively.
Speaking earlier, the Managing

INC also warned that Wike, would not push the Ikwerre and Ijaw ethnic nationalities into tribal crisis by his provocative utterances and actions in recent times.
President of INC, Prof Benjamin Okaba said he was not surprised that the 27 lawmakers acted in that “shameful way”, saying, “they are neither interested in peace or the overall interest of the Rivers people. They are there to serve the interest of their master, Wike”.
The INC President alleged that the lawmakers were behaving the way they do because it was “Wike that bought the forms that took them to the Assembly. They were handpicked by him. Wike said so publicly. That is why I am not surprised the way they act.”
Also reacting, a rights group, Ogoni Development Drive (ODD), has expressed worries over what it described as 'political sacrilege' that happened in the state while people were going about their duties as though everything was normal.
Convener of the group, Solomon Lenu, said “nothing is normal that a sitting governor who has control over every property both land and air in the state will come to the Assembly Complex and be shut out, is abnormal.”
He called on Rivers people to condemn the act, saying, “If this had happened in Wike’s time, there would be dead bodies everywhere. This is unfortunate. Ijaw people are keeping quiet. Wike just threw tantrums at the Ijaw people. When an Ogoni man becomes a governor, I want to see what Wike will do then.
“Then he will know that he does not have a monopoly of violence and this crass attitude. Before Wike became the governor of Rivers state, there were other governors and none of them laid claims to the state the way Wike is doing. Those people in the Assembly must urgently apologise to the governor for this shame and embarrassment they exhibited today.”
Meanwhile, oil and gas producing communities of Niger Delta has told the 27 lawmakers in the state to restrain from actions that might spark fire capable of affecting crude oil production in the region.
The host communities were responding to the unwillingness of
Director of MOFI, Takang emphasised the organisation's commitment to transparency and accountability. He revealed that MOFI had developed strategic plans to optimise assets management, including collaborations with other MDAs to drive economic growth and job creation. Takang also highlighted MOFI's focus on diversifying investments across various industries and assets classes to enhance resilience and ensure sustainable economic development.
the authorities of the Assembly to allow Fubara to gain access to the complex for the presentation of the 2025 budget.
Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), of the communities committee of oil and gas producing area of the Niger Delta (CDC), Joseph Ambakaderimo said, “baring Governor Siminalayi Fubara from gaining access to the Rivers State House of Assembly to perform official function is the height of political rascality on full display.
“This must be called to question because this action in itself is an affront on the Supreme Court judgement. These men call themselves lawmakers. They should always live by example.” House Opposition Lawmakers Accuse Rivers Assembly of Plot to Destabilise State
Coalition of opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by Pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly to destabilise local government elections. Its spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, made the allegation while addressing a press conference yesterday in Abuja.
He alleged that there was a plot by the pro-Wike lawmakers to amend the local government law to frustrate the conduct of election, allow former local government chairmen whose tenure had expired to come back. The coalition, however, assured Rivers people that the election would be held as scheduled by the electoral body, noting that no illegal amendment would stop the conduct of the elections.
“It’s time for people to continue to stand firm. We are almost close to the end and that’s why you see more frustrations, more ranting, because the people are arising.
“Election has been fixed for August 9th, while the indigenes are preparing for elections that the Supreme Court ordered to be re-conducted, the Wike group is running around looking for injunction to stop the conduct of the election.
“Like they did before running around to amend the local government law to frustrate the election. He’s now running around again to say that those former chairmen whose tenure has expired that they should come back. He wants to control the structure of governance.”

Traders Count Losses as Fire Razes Popular Oyo Market
Property worth millions of naira were last Tuesday night destroyed by fire that razed some parts of the popular Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The fire incident, which broke out at the midnight, left trails of losses, wailing and anguish as many traders lost multiple shops to the inferno.
This was as the state government assured shop owners who lost their wares and property to the fire incident of necessary intervention and support to cushion the effect of their losses and bring back
normalcy into the market.
Some of the traders, while speaking with journalists yesterday, expressed sadness, and called for assistance from the state government and philanthropists in society.
One of the victims, Rukayat AbdulLateef, said the fire consumed two shops with over N50 million worth of goods.
According to her, “I just bought about N5.4 million worth of goods in my two shops last Thursday, and I have some goods left there before restocking because we don’t normally finish selling the previous goods before restocking.

‘Oil & Gas Investments Won’t Make Africa Net Contributor to Global Emissions’
The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for hydrocarbon investments to address energy poverty, emphasising that Africa is not a net contributor to global emissions.
Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Energy, Olu Verheijen, stated this during a session at CERAWeek by S&P
Global with the theme: Policy and People: Pathways to a Just Transition.
The session, which was chaired by Head of Market Report & Trading Solutions at S&P Global, Vera Blei, featured key speakers including CEO of Tinker Energy Association, Scott Tinker and Director-General, Centre for Science and Environment, Sunita Narain.
On Africa’s role in global
emissions, Veheijen, who said Nigeria and other African and middle-income countries, continue to canvass a just energy transition amid the global push for net-zero emissions, maintained that under its “Decade of Gas.” initiative, the Nigerian government has adopted natural gas as a transition fuel to support economic growth, while reducing carbon emissions.
Verheijen noted that Africa and other low-income countries contribute only about 3-4 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, compared to China and the United States, which account for approximately 30 percent and 13 percent of global CO2 emissions. Together, both countries are responsible for nearly 40 percent of global emissions.
Women Can Design, Lead Sustainable Cities of the Future, Says Minister
Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has continued her advocacy for women empowerment at the ongoing Commission for the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York, urging global leaders to correct the oversight and position women and girls, to design and lead sustainable cities of the future.
She disclosed this during the high level dialogue on women and girls leadership with the theme: How can Women and Girls Leadership Help Save our Cities and Planet?
According to a statement by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Jonathan Eze, the minister stated that the world is experiencing unprecedented urbanisation, environmental degradation, and climate change impacts - all of which disproportionately affect women and girls, noting that their roles in shaping sustainable cities, resilient communities, and climate-conscious governance cannot be overemphsised.
The minister said: “Too often, women are seen as beneficiaries of urban planning and environmental policies rather than as decisionmakers, innovators, and architects of change.
“Yet, the evidence is clear: when women lead, cities become more livable, economic growth becomes more inclusive, and environmental policies become more effective.

After series of meetings between the contractors
and the management of the commission represented by the Chief Security Officer, the top hierarchy of the DSS directed that the leadership of the DESOPADEC meet with the angry contractors and resolve amicably the raised issues within the shortest possible time.

How Pinnick Lost to the Conspiracy of Serving FA Presidents in Africa
Duro Ikhazuagbe
Former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Melvin Pinnick, yesterday narrowly missed joining the late Etubom Oyo Orok Oyo as the only Nigerians to have served two terms on the exalted FIFA Council.
Pinnick who secured 28 votes, lost by a single vote at the poll that took place as part of the 14th CAF Extraordinary Congress in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday morning.
Dr Amos Adamu is the other Nigerian who also served a single term of four years on the FIFA Council. His bid to returned to the hallowed chambers of the world football governing body was truncated by the ban slammed on him for ethical infractions.
In the election, Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa swept the polls with highest 49 votes followed by Egypt’s Hany Abou Rida and Niger Republic’s Djibrilla “Pele” Hamidou netting 35 votes each.
Lekja, Rida, Hamidou, Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania, Souleman Hassan Waberi of Djibouti will join CAF President Patrice Motsepe (South Africa) who was voted unopposed for a second term, as Africa’s representatives at the FIFA Council, alongside Kanizat Ibrahim from the Comoros Island who collected the women’s seat by scoring 30 votes, as against 13 for former FIFA Council and IOC Member Lydia Nsekera and seven for incumbent Isha Johansen.
Andrew Kamanga (Zambia), Yacine Idriss Diallo (Cote d’Ivoire) and Augustin Senghor (Senegal) polled 19, 18 and 13 votes respectively, while Benin Republic’s Mathurin De Chacus withdrew just before the vote.
According to inside information at the Congress, Pinnick who was favoured to retain his seat with about 40 votes, lost out to the conspiracy of the group in CAF who wants only serving FA presidents on the FIFA Council.
“It was a grand conspiracy just few hours to the election when a group within CAF started pushing for only serving FA Presidents to be on the FIFA Council. Amaju Pinnick who was sure of at least 40 votes to retain his seat, suddenly realized that he was now up in arm against this powerful interest group. It was surprising that he could even muster 28 votes, losing by just a single vote,”
FIFA COUNCIL SEAT
revealed one of the FA presidents that was in Cairo for the election yesterday to THISDAY.
He strongly believes that the single vote voided would have gone to Pinnick to cause a tie of 29 votes each for Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania, Souleman Hassan Waberi of Djibouti and Pinnick.
This would have caused a rerun where anything could have happened for the last two candidates to emerge for the FIFA Council seats.
However, yesterday’s election threw up issue of imbalance in the composition of Africa’s representation at the FIFA Council as the Anglophone
group was completely left out. All the six members belong to the Arab and French speaking bloc in the continent.
Motsepe is in as CAF President and one of the eight vice presidents, each representing the six confederations.

that stopping Pinnick from returning to the FIFA Council was all part of the grand plan to whittle his influence in the continent ahead of 2029 when billionaire businessman Motsepe would have completed his second term as CAF President and ready to hand over to another candidate.
“If you look at how the candidates for the FIFA Council were elected, you will realise that it is a deliberate plot to handover the CAF Presidency to
the North Africans come 2029. They just didn’t want Pinnick around the world governing body so as to whittle his influence in African football politics,” observed this powerful voice on African football.
It was widely speculated that Motsepe who Pinnick worked so hard to get elected as CAF President in his first term would most likely co-opt the Warri-born football administrator into the CAF Executive Committee as compensation. In the other elections for the CAF executive committee

Citing Absence of Defence, Consortium Asks Court to Enter Judgement against GreenArps
A Technical Consortium to Messrs
GreenArps Project Limited on the concession of the National Stadium in Lagos, has asked a High Court to enter judgement against GreenArps, following the failure of the firm to file a defence in the fee default suit before the court.
Counsel to the claimant, Mr Austin Otah made the request on Wednesday, shortly after the court entertained the Preliminary Objection filed by the defendant challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit.
The claimant, Raji Rasaq Adeshina had sued GreenArps Project Ltd on behalf of himself and other technical partners that helped the defendant to bid and win the concession of the National Stadium, Lagos, in 2023.
In the suit marked: CV/57/2025, and filed on January 10, 2025, the claimant is seeking an order of court directing the defendant to pay its remaining balance of N50 million as well as the interest that has accrued since 2023.
GreenArps Project Limited is a company owned and managed
by Business Mogul, Kessington Adebukuola Adebutu, popularly known as ‘Baba Ijebu. The company is alleged to have defaulted in the full payment of negotiated fees and further services rendered by a Technical Consortium which directly led to the company’s successful concession bid for the National Stadium in Lagos in November 2023.
When the matter was called on Wednesday, claimant's lawyer informed the court that the business of the day was the Preliminary Objection filed by the defendant.
Adopting the motion marked: M/2742/2025, defendant's lawyer, Oluwatoyin Ihunmakalu, stated that the PO was based on the grounds that the Writ of Summons was incompetent, since it was neither signed by the claimant or his lawyer. Ihunmakalu accordingly asked the court to strike out the suit on the grounds that the court cannot entertain an incompetent suit. Responding, Otah who argued that
contrary to the claim of the defendant, the writ was signed by him with his original stamp and seal affixed on the documents with the court, accused the defendant of delaying trial with the preliminary objection motion.
"This case is a debt recovery case" Otah said, "They have not offered any defense, they are only delaying the trial".
Reacting, trial judge, Justice Abdulraman Usman asked the defence if it has not filed a counter affidavit to the claim of the claimant, Ihunmakalu stated that the defendant was yet to file because the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit.
But Justice Usman clarified that the court cannot rule only on the PO, adding that ruling would be delivered alongside judgement in the main suit.
Taking the hint from the court, the defense lawyer indicated willingness to file response to the suit, but Otah objected stressing that the defendant had 30 days but refused to do anything, "they slept on their rights".
Besides, Otah drew the court's attention to an affidavit before the court, seeking the transfer of the case to the "Undefended List" since the defendant did not file any defense within the time allowed by law.t "We should be allowed to adopt our processes and be given judgement", he said.
But Ihunmakalu objected, pointing out that a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court documents obtained from the registrar showed that there was no such affidavit to warrant that the case be placed on the undefended list.
Reacting, Otah argued that since the case was already on the "Fast track Procedure", the court should still go ahead to hear the matter and deliver its judgement since the defendant did not file any defense.q
However, Justice Usman stated that the court cannot grant the request of the claimant without sighting the affidavit for transfer of the case to the undefended list.
He directed the claimant to forward a copy and asked the defendant to also file its defence and adjourned the matter till March 19.
Amaju Melvin Pinnick (OFR), rose from his seat inside the Marriott Mena House in downtown Cairo on Wednesday afternoon without any negative emotion. He had just lost his seat on the FIFA Council (that hallowed panel of only 37 persons who rule world football), even if so narrowly.
But his character and charisma remained in place and he was unbowed. Instead, he was full of gratitude to God and to a throng of persons.
“When I started out 26 years ago, as a volunteer at the FIFA U20 World Cup that Nigeria hosted, I never dreamed of reaching these heights. Never thought I could become the number one administrator of football in Nigeria (and for eight years for that matter), play key roles in African football and easily mingle with the world’s top football governors. I have only gratitude to give to the Almighty God, to those who have helped me one way or the other and to all those I have met on my way.
“Football politics is fierce, but I am proud to have fought a good fight. I campaigned hard; travelled to more than 30 countries.
"Hours before the election, I was sure of close to 40 votes. But politics happened. I am not bitter about anything, just full of gratitude to everyone who supported my push, " observed Pinnick in his thank you message to the Nigerian President.
The former NFF President, who also served as First Vice President of CAF between 2018 and 2019, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a person and the Government of Nigeria as a whole, as well as FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino, NSC boss Shehu Dikko, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and those he called friends in government and the corporate world.
“I am drawn to tears by the sup-
port of President Tinubu, right from the time he publicly endorsed my candidature. I am most grateful and do not take anything for granted. I cherish my relationship with Gianni (Infantino) and appreciate his sincerity. I thank the National Sports Commission led by Shehu Dikko. The NFF, particularly Ibrahim Musa Gusau, were amazing in their push. Kudos also to my friends in government and the corporate world.
“I was to be no more than the head of NFF electoral committee back in 2014, but fate catapulted me to the presidency and I became the youngest-ever Nigerian in world football’s supreme council. I am more than fulfilled, " concludes Pinnick.
At least 45 athletes from across the federation are expected to participate in the Governor’s Para-Swimming Classic, scheduled to take place at the National Stadium swimming pool in Surulere from March 17 to 22.
According to the organisers, this edition will stand out from previous ones, featuring five days of intensive scientific training and analysis, followed by a one-day competition.
The primary objective of the event is to secure the inclusion of at least one para-swimming event in the upcoming National Sports Festival later this year in Ogun State. This goal hinges on the athletes' performance—whether they achieve personal bests or set new records during the competition.
Integrating para-swimming into the National Sports Festival will be a significant step toward developing and preparing elite athletes for the
upcoming Para Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. For data collection and research purposes, the organizers have confirmed that only three classifications of para-swimmers will compete in this edition: Short Stature: Athletes with reduced bone length in the upper limbs, lower limbs, or trunk. Leg Length Difference: Athletes with a measurable difference in leg length.
Intellectual Impairment: Athletes who experience challenges with pattern recognition, sequencing, memory, or reaction time, which can impact overall sports performance.
The scientific training sessions will provide valuable insights into the athletes' abilities, enabling organizers to collect crucial data while helping swimmers refine their speed, endurance, and overall performance.

Katsina Elders to Federal Government
“It is truly disheartening that a gallant officer, a son of Katsina, who dedicated his life to the service of this nation, is now spending over a month in captivity at the hands of bandits...His family is in anguish, uncertain about his condition”—The Katsina Elders Forum (KEF) expressing concern about the whereabouts of a former NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), who was kidnapped last month.

Natasha, as ‘The Headliner’
Last Thursday, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months by the Senate for violating its rules. But with the disciplinary action coming after she had formally submitted a petition alleging sexual harassment against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, it is the chambers that is now on the defensive. The highest legislative body in the country is being inadvertently perceived as aiding and abetting predatory behaviour against women, even among its own members. It is a self-inflicted problem. A more circumspect Senate would have put the disciplinary matter against Akpoti-Uduaghan in temporary abeyance by first dealing with the sexual harassment allegation against its presiding officer; after all, as a Yoruba adage says, if tree falls on tree, conventional wisdom teaches that you start the clearing process from the top.
At the Women in Parliament session held at the Inter-Parliamentary Union Meeting (IPU) in New York, United States, on Tuesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan internationalised not only her ordeal but also used the platform to speak for Nigerian women. “I was suspended illegally because I submitted a petition for sexual harassment against the President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said. “I thought that by submitting the petition, he would recuse himself and both of us would submit ourselves to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for a fair, transparent investigation. But unfortunately, I was silenced, and I was suspended,” she told the gathering. “That means I’m here illegally...It depicts the crisis of women’s political representation. My suspension is not just about me. It’s about the systemic exclusion of women from political leadership in Nigeria.”
Considering what many of the male Senators have been saying on this crisis, it is almost difficult to fault Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claim that her ordeal has to do with her gender—regardless of whether her allegation against Akpabio is true or false. In asking that the suspension be reduced from six to three months, Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro—leader of her own party, the main Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that ought to be in her corner—compared Akpoti-Uduaghan to a ‘recalcitrant child’ that you sometimes ‘beat’ when they misbehave. The Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Onyekachi Peter Nwebonyi made matters worse by going on air to retort that Akpoti-Uduaghan has “six kids from six different men”, a false claim; and that her “lifestyle is blocking the chances of other women who want to enter politics.”
I wonder why the Senate cannot understand that the entire saga has gone beyond the person of Akpoti-Uduaghan or the veracity of her allegation. It is not for nothing that the United Nations has devoted several days in a year to remind the world of impediments against the female gender. The last four months provide a ready example. Between 25th November and 10th December 2024, we had the annual global 16 days of activism which basically just called for an end to violence against women and girls. Then on 6th February this
year, we had the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. Five days later, on 11th February, was the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Of course, we were all aware that last Saturday, 8th March, was 2025 International Women’s Day. But I doubt if many were aware that Monday, 10th March was also the International Day of Women Judges.
To mark the event, the United Nations Office for Drug and Crimes (UNODC) published a feature story on a female judicial officer in Kenya, Christine Njagi with the headline, “‘Be the headliner, not the footnote’: Women in Justice/for Justice.” While sharing her experiences on the challenges women and girls face in Kenya, Njagi said in whatever situation women find themselves, they should strive to be the headliner and not the footnote. “Don’t be afraid at times to swim against the current—you might be the one who will change the flow of the river,” Njagi admonished. That appears to be the manual from which Akpoti-Uduaghan draws her inspiration. Whatever may be her motivation, the moment she was shut down by Akpabio while protesting the seat-change, she had elected to be the headliner rather than the footnote in the battle she knew was coming. By suspending her, after she had formally submitted her petition on sexual harassment, the Senate has only played into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s hands.
It is possible, as Senator Nwebonyi said, that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegation against Akpabio “is a case of personal, unsubstantiated, and conveniently timed accusations—claims of sexual harassment that supposedly took place over a year ago but surfaced only after the accuser was summoned for disciplinary action.” But not many people really care anymore, perhaps
because of the way the Senate handled the issue. When the holder of a superior power position is accused of sexual exploitation, intimidation, or implicit threat, there is an obligation on that institution to treat such allegation, especially coming from a member, with seriousness. That perhaps explains why for many, the real issue is no longer whether Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio is true but rather that the Senate, in suspending her—even if for another ‘offense’—has denied her the opportunity of a fair hearing.
My position on the former ‘uncommon transformer’ of Akwa Ibom State is welldocumented on this page, and one of my recent columns on him, ‘Akpabio: A Man for Every New Season’ has been trending on WhatsApp since this crisis started. I have also received suggestive messages from readers about what I should ‘write on Akpabio’. But that is not my way. I have nothing personal against the senate president. No matter what some of us may think of Akpabio, it would be unfair to jump to any hasty conclusions based on a claim that has not been proved to be true. Besides, removing Akpabio as Senate President will not resolve a problem that is institutional. What we must ensure is that women and girls who find the courage to raise an alarm relating to sexual harassment are respectfully listened to and not intimidated into silence. We must find a way of supporting a fair and discreet interrogation of such issues, without humiliating either party. This is because we live in a patriarchal society where women who refuse to accede to sexual demands from their superiors could easily have their careers delayed or truncated with irreparable damage done to their self-worth, sometimes for life.
To mark the 2025 International Women’s Day last Saturday, platitudes eulogising women in Nigeria were offered by our men in positions of power. But the reality is that we operate a system patently skewed against women. At the Women in Parliament session attended by Akpoti-Uduaghan on Tuesday, a new IPU report, ‘Women in Parliament, 1995-2025’ was released to commemorate 30 years since the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The report reveals that the percentage of seats held by women in national parliaments has risen from 11.3% in 1995 to 27.2% in 2025. Meanwhile, in 15 States Houses of Assemblies across Nigeria today, there is not a single female lawmaker! Let’s not even talk about how a female lawmaker who was elected Speaker by 90 percent of the membership in a State House of Assembly was arm-twisted to surrender the gavel to the unpopular man she displaced. Even if the decision was not taken because she is a woman, the signaling was bad considering the overwhelming support she enjoyed from her colleagues.
The situation is only slightly better at the centre. In the current Senate, there are only four members among 108 Senators. Among the 360 lawmakers in the House of Representatives, there are only 16 female members. But the real problem is that even those few members are most often treated with disrespect. Exactly nine years ago, I wrote about this in a column titled, ‘In
Defence of Nigerian Women.’ Interestingly, it is the current First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu who provoked my column at the time.
Presenting a motion to mark the 2016 International Women’s Day with the theme, ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality’, Senator Tinubu (as she then was) had argued, “We represent courage and resilience; without us (Nigerian women) I don’t think this country will move forward.” The contributions that followed from some of the male senators were, to put it mildly, reckless. Eight months ago, I rehashed most of my arguments in another column, ‘For Akpabio, A Teachable Moment’, after he tendered a public apology to AkpotiUduaghan on the floor of the senate for demeaning her with a biting remark that the Senate is not a “nightclub”. What that episode and the earlier one that elicited my column nine years ago reveal is that when those who make laws for society act in ways that suggest a lack of respect for women, there is a problem.
That precisely is why many women, including those who may habour doubts about Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claim against Akpabio, are angry about the way the Senate has handled the matter. But it is not too late to make amends. The suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan should be lifted. She should also be availed the opportunity to prove her sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio before the Senate Committee on Ethics. If she cannot provide evidence, Akpabio reserves the right to sue for damages. For any family man, the psychological wound of being falsely accused of sexual offense is deep and it is not something that should be taken lightly. For that reason, I am delighted by the way the IPU President, Ms Tulia Ackson, who is also the Speaker of the Tanzania National Assembly, handled Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegation. She said they have only heard one side (from Akpoti-Uduaghan) hence would also need to hear the other side (from Akpabio and Nigerian Senate) before they could draw any conclusion. Keeping an open mind is exactly what is required on such an allegation until all sides are heard and the person who asserts can prove.
Meanwhile, my counsel for AkpotiUdughan is to return home for the new battle ahead. All the white, black and red lions she defeated to get to the Senate have launched a subterranean but well-funded campaign for her recall. However, since the larger issue that has been thrown up is about gender inclusion in Nigeria, let me also conclude with the last paragraph of my 2016 column which still resonates, especially for our lawmakers. It will serve the Senate and also the larger Nigerian society: The recent obsession of some senators with the denigration of a vital segment of our populace indicates something more sinister about the state of our legislature. In a country beset with so many pressing existential issues requiring legislative intervention, it is a negative testimonial that some of our lawmakers can only find relevance in denigrating women. I therefore do not hesitate to say to the unrepentant chauvinists in our midst: Next time you think about Nigerian women, think of your mother and please mind your language!
