N

early 40 years ago, Pocono Irish American Club was founded to, “Preserve and promote” Irish culture. Since its inception, the organization has enlisted ongoing efforts to further exemplify this illustrious heritage with none more recognizable than the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Less than two miles embodies a Main Street route through the Borough of Stroudsburg starting at Stroudsburg High School. Eastward on ending in East Stroudsburg, festivities are set to start 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20. Lined with seemingly endless shades of emerald green, spectators and participants alike revel in the day’s festivities. Calling it a, “Great family community event which celebrates the coming out of winter for the Poconos,” Parade Chairperson, Rosie Gralinski considering communitywide generosity a large part in making the parade possible. She notes this year’s event’s significance, dedicating celebrations to the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising, “[In] memory of those

brave individuals that gave their lives in the name of Ireland.” Sharing a few segments from “The Easter Rising,” Jack Haren illustrates history’s poignant past.

The Easter Rising Jack Haren

Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Morris County

The Rising was the opening act in the Irish War of Independence. A singular and desperate act launched by a band of men who refused to acknowledge the futility of their fight against English rule on Irish soil. The Irish leadership hoped to take advantage of the deployment of British troops to the battlefields of World War I, leaving fewer to control Ireland. At 11:00 am on Easter Monday, April 24th, Patrick Pearse and the Irish Volunteers, along with James Connolly and the Irish Citizens Army hurried across Dublin City to occupy strategic buildings and control important fields of fire. Less than 1,000 Irishmen were up against the military might of the British Empire. But the dye was cast.

The orders had been given…. What the Irish rebels lacked in materials they made up for in passion and courage. The yearnings of their fore bearers and the spirit of generations gone before them boiled to the surface. Read more of Jack’s compelling piece at ThisWeek.net

EckleyUnveiled H

arnessing facts and faces behind significant accomplishments that shape how we live today, serves as a means of both honoring and engraving memories of people from our past. As organizations across the Commonwealth commemorate the founding of Pennsylvania, Eckley Miners’ Village recognizes anthracite mining heritage with an open invitation to join a Charter Day celebration March 13. Considering the Weatherly site’s event an ideal opportunity to, “Showcase [how important] culture is to the region,” Eckley Historic Site Administrator Dr. Bode Morin applauds local performers and professionals influential in telling Eckley’s tale, confident igniting curiosity will serve as a catalyst to everlasting homage.

Eternally embracing the regional impact of the “Rise of the labor movement,” as it echoed nationwide, filmmaker Greg Matkosky, WVIA Creative Director for Documentary Films, will present his Emmy nominated piece, “Stories from the Mines.” Describing noteworthy components embedded within the 90 minute production, the NEPA native comments, “I felt like I had to do this,” explaining the ability to unveil “Huge contributions” families made as a gratifying experience.

30 This Week in the Poconos

He notes the creative collaboration conceived over 20 years ago with Thom Currá, now WVIA CEO, involved deep historical research marked by an intricate mix of academic scholars and “People who lived the history” each bringing compelling structure. From researchers articulating context that entwined the significance of anthracite coal’s role in the Industrial Revolution, “Connecting local and regional history to American history”; to sons and daughters inviting a compelling journey through the lives they knew with photos and touching memories. Footage shot at Eckley featuring the Eckley Players, lends a clever tone creating a sense of realism to the former mining village.

While Sunday’s Charter Day runs noon to 5 p.m., a steadfast commitment to sharing the influence people and industry have cast upon the region remains with additional Eckley events on the horizon. Watch as details on June’s Patch Town’s Slavic Days arise, with the ever popular 1940’s Weekend planned for August.
