irds chirping as a glimmer of grass peeks through seemingly endless piles of snow...Could that possibly be signs spring is on the horizon? As our region braces for the annual thaw, many consider this the opportune time to do a bit of spring sprucing. “Home”... “Retreat”... “Vacation Station”—no matter what label, all domiciles bear a bit of wear and tear after the winter months before welcoming another season of fun. Now is the time for remedying the results of snow boots, snow salts and bitter cold pipe bursts wreaking havoc upon carpets and wood floors. On the other hand, spring and summer outdoor entertaining optimism tends to ignite thoughts of coverage from sun glare and the elements.

Anyone?

Michael’s Carpet Custom Kitchen, Bath & Window Treatments’ Lorraine Schmid suggests, “Get it done now so you can enjoy the summer!” Agreeing with many that a great Cabin Fever Reliever is more than merely spring cleaning. She encourages tackling projects before spring makes way to summer announcing one year financing with no interest.

C

amelback Mountain invites one and all to celebrate the majesty of this spectacular snowsport destination sending winter out with a bang at the annual Cardboard Box Derby March 22. Part of a weekend filled with fun starting off with a Parking Lot Party and Pond Skimming, this challenge dares everyone to test their architectural ability or just brace themselves for some hilarious antics observing from the sidelines. Describing Cardboard Box Derby as, “Part of a weekend-long event that celebrates the beginning of spring and wraps up another winter season with a bang,” Camelback’s Kelly Joffe considers the annual ritual a “blast!” The goal is to construct a cardboard vehicle capable of enduring a race down Camelback’s Sunbowl trail. Spectators line the boundaries eager to catch a glimpse of the curious sights in store. From pineapples to birthday cakes, these non-edible transports join clever contraptions of all sorts. While building rules and regulations displayed on their website maintain sanity, with safety key, Joffe reveals, “Most of the time the cardboard vehicles fall apart halfway down the trail or crash before they finish.” She tells how conquering this feat intact is met by triumphant cheers from the crowd. All are welcome to participate in the race with Joffe noting the “usual suspects” consist of employees from local businesses and Camelback departments. Family time proves a factor in building teams with hopes the same bonding adheres to cardboard creations. Prize categories including Best in Show, Best Time, Best Corporate

I Want Candy... S

& MORE

avoring the sweet victory of 29 years in business, Country Kettle Candy & Gift Shop has become quite the Pocono Mountains staple! With sights set on satisfying cravings of all sorts, Country Kettle entertains visitors with over 250 barrels of bulk candy, as well as, a bountiful boutique and aisles of giftables sure to ignite smiles. Handbags displayed in a kaleidoscope of color, exquisite fashions and jewelry make for one truly sweet spot. Latest styles in the Endless jewelry line, combining the stylish look of leather with the ability to add a charmed personal touch proves an increasingly popular draw.

“We’re not just a candy store,” explains owner Pam Schrenko enjoying success alongside husband Lou. She divulges a bit of insight to what delights patrons reasoning, “We listen to what the customers like” as a key ingredient in their recipe for longevity and growth. Happiness in Country Kettle serving as a source in acquiring “Tons of friends from all over” as her inspiration for proclaiming, “I love what I do.” Multi-generational enjoyment adds to the mix as she tells of experiencing parents and grandparents introducing the destination to wide-eyed youngsters for the first time. When asked how she could possibly recall guests over three decades in business she explains, “I remember people by what they like.” Recalling groups often meander in different areas of the

store but all wind up in the candy section at some point. Case in point, Mark La Rose reunited with his party, candy bag in hand, admitting tales of confectionary tons brought this New York photographer from his stay at The Inn at Pocono Manor. Calling Country Kettle “a brilliant store” he listed the culmination of unexpected sensory delights upon entry. From “rustic appeal” to engaging candle scents he says enhanced the experience of a leisurely stroll alongside Michaellie McPherson and Marcia Toche-La Rose. Located on Business Route 209 just south of the Marshalls Creek intersection, Country Kettle is set to satisfy that sweet tooth or yearning for a unique boutique shopping experience any day of the week with hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
