oulder Field, located in Hickory Run State Park, is a National Natural Landmark and true scenic wonder. This vast field of astounding stone is actually remains of the last ice advance. While over 15,000 years ago such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast; gradual weathering and climate changes have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fields. Only in special places, such as Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain.

-n-

Boulder Field’s surprisingly flat mass measures 400 feet wide, 1,800 feet long and approximately 10 feet deep hosting an amazing assortment of shapes and sizes. A potpourri of loosely packed red sandstone remnants range in size from a few inches to 25 feet long! A trend of angular in the east side, transitions to more rounded shapes in the west end of the field.

An invigorating exploration, Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. Boulder Field is easily accessible by Boulder Field Road or the scenic 3.5 mile Boulder Field hiking trail. To learn more about this unique natural wonder, call the Hickory Run State Park Office at (570) 443-0400 or check out www.visitpaparks.com

Marvelous Sights V

iewing wildlife in their natural habitat can be a wonderful, exhilarating way to connect with nature. However, attempts to scare away curious creatures foraging through bird feeders, or approaching doe-eye critters should be avoided. Certain precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of the animals should always be taken: • Don’t feed wild animals. Feeding wild animals puts them at great risk for becoming addicted to foods that are not natural for them. It also reduces their ability to forage for themselves. Wild animals that are fed by humans are more likely to become aggressive towards people.

White-Tail Deer

• Limit time spent observing animals. Encounters with people can be stressful to animals and can alter their normal behaviors. Half an hour is reasonable.

Robin

• Stay clear of mothers with young. Nests, dens, and rookeries are especially vulnerable to human disturbance. Never herd, chase, or separate a mother from her young or try to handle pups. • Resist the temptation to “rescue” wild animals, especially babies. Mom is usually watching from a safe distance. If an animal appears sick, get professional help by calling park rangers or animal control officers.

Photo: Dorothea Schaefer

Black Bear

• Keep pets on a leash or leave them at home. Both pets and wild animals can be hurt if bitten. There is also danger of disease transmission. • Don’t litter. Be responsible for leaving a place better than you found it. Carry a trash bag and pick up litter when you see it.

The

Geography S

igns of spring reveal marvels for the eyes to behold. As images of an ideal getaway yield the caveat it not be far away, many head to higher altitude for the certainty of witnessing nature’s uninterrupted beauty in the Pocono Mountains. From exploring miles of hiking and bike trails, to getting your feet wet (or not) with wonderful ways to fish reeling in excitement over catching fruitful finds; there’s a seemingly endless assortment of things to see and do.

Christened “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls obliges the urge to witness these natural wonders. Eight superlative waterfalls cascading over primeval rocks and slate walls that form part of the region’s uplands, Bushkill is considered one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful and dramatic natural sights. The majestic main waterfall drops over the edge of a 100-foot cliff into a pool banked by ferns, mosses and

wildflowers. From there, the falls plummet another 70 feet through a long gorge strewn with colossal boulders. Two streams flowing down the mountainside feed the falls, as trails and bridges winding through the area open doors to incredible views. Bushkill — a journey into the power and magnificence of nature. Explore for Yourself Right Here: www.visitbushkillfalls.com
