Gather your friends, family and fishing poles and head for the Pocono waterways! The 2014 Pennsylvania Trout Fishing Season officially begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 12! The Pocono Mountains Region of Pennsylvania is widely is known as a top destination for coldwater fishing. Healthy populations of rainbow, brook and brown trout flourish in local waters, and abundant public fishing holes are easily accessible by car or scenic hike. Through Labor Day weekend, licensed anglers can catch and keep up to five fish per creel from Pennsylvania’s inland waters; trout must measure at least seven inches in length to be kept. In the Commonwealth, anglers age 16 and older are required to possess a valid fishing license and trout stamp. One, three, and seven-day fishing licenses are available for Pennsylvania visitors. Fishing licenses, bait and equipment can be found at many locally owned shops across the Poconos. Woehrle’s Bait Shop in Mount Pocono offers an outstanding selection of live bait for all seasons. MCHA holds 22nd Annual Victorian Tea and Luncheon The Monroe County Historical Association (MCHA) will present its 22nd Annual Victorian Tea and Luncheon on Sunday, April 27 at the Chateau Resort and Conference Center in Tannersville. This year’s program, by Marta McDowell, is titled “Curves, Carpets and Color: A Lecture on Romantic and Victorian Gardening in America.” The presentation explores the development of an American landscaping style, from formal to romantic. McDowell is a teacher of landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden. Her writing has appeared in Woman’s Day, Fine Gardening and The New York Times. The 22nd Annual Victorian Tea will begin with a social hour at 1 p.m. Seating will take place at 1:30, and the luncheon program will commence at 2 p.m. This year’s menu features creamy potato and leek soup, Turkey Waldorf salad, scones and baked goods, strawberry shortcake, and assorted teas and coffee. The price for the luncheon is $30 for MCHA members and $35 for non-member guests. The Victorian Tea is an open seating event. Tables can be reserved for groups of 10. Reservations, with payment, should be made at the Monroe County Historical Association, 900 Main Street, Stroudsburg, before Saturday, April 19. Behold Boulder Field!

Boulder Field, located in Hickory Run State Park, is a National Natural Landmark and a true scenic wonder. The vast “field” of stone is a fossil and a relict, its contents left behind after the last ice advance. Hickory Run’s Boulder Field is a potpourri of loosely-packed boulders, which range in size from a few inches to 25’ in length. The surprisingly flat field measures 400’ wide, 1,800’ long and about 10’ deep. The boulders are predominantly red sandstone, and trend from angular shapes in the east side of the field to more rounded shapes in the west. About 15,000 years ago, such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast, but gradual weathering and climate change have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fields. Only in special places, such as Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain. Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. Boulder Field is easily accessed via Boulder Field Road, or the scenic 3.5-mile Boulder Field hiking trail. A Marvelous Migration: S pring B irding in the Poconos
Spring weather is making its way back to the Pocono Mountains, and migratory birds are not far behind!
According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, spring migration peaks during the months of March, April and May. Birds that reside in the northern hemisphere return home in the spring to take advantage of emerging insect populations, budding plants and abundant nesting locations. Welcome warmer weather and returning birds during environmental education events in April! The American Woodcocks are back and singing at Nescopeck State Park! Don’t miss your chance to see these incredible game birds take to the sky in what author Aldo Leopold referred to as the “Sky Dance!” Join the Tumblin’ Timberdoodles program on Saturday, April 5! Meet at the park office at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Call (570) 403-2006 to register. Start tuning up your eyes and ears for spring birding with the help of experts from the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society! Participate in the upcoming Bird Tune-Up at the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center! Attract more musical birds to your backyard with these easy-to-accomplish methods from the Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds! Plant native shrubs, vines and trees. Because they have endured and adapted to the temperature extremes of the past, native plants are the best choice for creating bird-friendly habitats for the future. Provide a water source during the summer months, when birds are especially eager to bathe and drink. Bird baths should be 1-2” deep, with a shallow slope. Mount the bath on a pedestal, and clean it regularly with a stiff brush. Create a border along your property by planting native trees, vines, and shrubs that will meet the needs of birds throughout the year. Plant the tallest at the edge of the property, and shorter species tiered toward your home. Include thorny trees, such as hawthorn or raspberry for nesting; plant evergreens such as spruce, holly, or juniper for cover; and incorporate berryproducing shrubs such as dogwood, serviceberry, and viburnum that will provide fruit throughout the seasons. Make a brush pile in a corner of your property. Use fallen branches, sticks, and tree trunks. Layer the larger logs as a foundation, and build a pile in successive layers. In yards or fields adjoining forest, make a living brush pile by cutting bordering saplings halfway through the trunks, then pulling them into a collective heap. Songbirds will shelter there throughout the year. Rake leaves under shrubs to create mulch and natural areas for ground-feeding birds such as sparrows, towhees, and thrashers. Earthworms, pill bugs, insects, and spiders will thrive in the decomposing leaf mulch, and will be readily eaten by songbirds. Reduce your lawn, favoring meadow plants and taller grasses, which provide seeds and nesting places for birds. Mow the area just once a year, allowing the remainder of the lawn to grow 3-4” before cutting. Avoid lawn pesticides and wasteful sprinklers. Clean out old bird boxes in early spring. When placing a bird box, consider habitat as well as the size of the entrance hole and its distance from the ground. Face boxes to the east to gain extra warmth from sunlight. In forests, mimic woodpeckers by drilling 1¼” holes in dead wood 4-5’ above the ground to serve as nest cavity starts for chickadees and titmice. Clean tube feeders with a bottle brush and a 10% solution of non-chlorine bleach; rinse thoroughly and dry in the sun before refilling. Rake and remove soggy seed near feeders. Move feeders close to the house— within 3’ of a window— to prevent window strikes. Close by, birds are unlikely to gather enough speed to injure themselves if they strike a window. The birds will be safer, and you’ll get a better view! Keep your cat indoors for the safety of all. Cats kill birds, especially in the spring when young fledglings are on or near the ground. And cats themselves are safer from collisions, predators, diseases, and parasites when kept indoors. The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds was written by Steven W.
