An invite goes out for one and all to “sit back and relax” in the comfort of an authentically styled trolley as live guides narrate masterfully arranged visuals delving into the region’s rich history. Footage is filled with interviews sharing a wealth of knowledge on Delaware Water Gap and Shawnee on the Delaware sites that WGT’s Deborah Ketterer calls “very entertaining.” Deb notes “A tremendous amount of history,” captured in one hour with popular points of interest that include Resort Point Overlook, Cold Air Cave, Castle Inn and more. Discussing thoughts behind

orchestrating the innovative adventure, she says, “There was so much more we were able to put into it,” adding, “Instead of just pointing we’re able to give an in depth look at these places.” With group and family friendly pricing, she

he US National Park system has been dubbed “America’s Best Idea.” In view of the fact that one good idea deserves another, National Parks Week was established to serve as a means of reinforcing our national parks as places to have fun reconnecting with nature and history offering free admission days to our country’s amazing national parks and federal lands. While National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis considers, “Every day a great day in a national park” he calls entrance free days “An extra incentive to visit one of these amazing places.”

This year, National Parks Week runs April 18 through 26 and one popular NEPA destination is pulling full steam ahead with Entrance Fee-Free Days the 18th and 19th. Offering living history and special exhibits, Steamtown National Historic Site invites one and all to enjoy the Park grounds and museum complex on them. Conveniently located in downtown Scranton, it’s just a short drive off all major routes (81, 380, 84, 6 & 11). For more information checkout: www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm

Marvelous Sights...

V

iewing wildlife in their natural habitat can be a wonderful, exhilarating way to connect with nature. However, attempts to scare away curious creatures foraging through bird feeders or approaching doe-eye critters should be avoided. Certain precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of the animals should always be taken: • Don’t feed wild animals. Feeding wild animals puts them at great risk for becoming addicted to foods that are not natural for them. It also reduces their ability to forage for themselves. Wild animals that are fed by humans are more likely to become aggressive towards people. • Limit time spent observing animals. Encounters with people can be stressful to animals and can alter their normal behaviors. Half an hour is reasonable.

Racoon

Robin

• Stay clear of mothers with young. Nests, dens, and rookeries are especially vulnerable to human disturbance. Never herd, chase, or separate a mother from her young or try to handle pups. • Resist the temptation to “rescue” wild animals, especially babies. Mom is usually watching from a safe distance. If an animal appears sick, get professional help by calling park rangers or animal control officers.

Photo: Dorothea Schaefer

Black Bear

• Keep pets on a leash or leave them at home. Both pets and wild animals can be hurt if bitten. There is also danger of disease transmission. • Don’t litter. Be responsible for leaving a place better than you found it. Carry a trash bag and pick up litter when you see it.

Boulder d l o h e B F ie ld ! B

oulder Field, located in Hickory Run State Park, is a National Natural Landmark and a true scenic wonder. The vast “field” of stone is a fossil and a relict, its contents left behind after the last ice advance. Hickory Run’s Boulder Field is a potpourri of loosely-packed boulders which range in size from a few inches to 25’ in length. The surprisingly flat field measures 400’ wide, 1,800’ long and about 10’ deep. The boulders are predominantly red sandstone, and

trend from angular shapes in the east side of the field to more rounded shapes in the west. About 15,000 years ago, such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast, but gradual weathering and climate change have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fields. Only in special places, such as Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain.

Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono

Mountains. Boulder Field is easily accessible via Boulder Field Road, or the scenic 3.5-mile Boulder Field hiking trail.

To learn more about this unique natural wonder, call the Hickory Run State Park Office at (570) 4430400 or check out www. visitpaparks.com. For trail maps and information on hiking in Pennsylvania, head to www. dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ recreation/hiking/where/ index.htm.

hristened “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls features eight waterfalls cascading over the primeval rocks and slate walls that form the uplands of the Pocono Mountains. As one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful and dramatic natural sights, Bushkill Falls makes an ideal daytrip for hikers and great singles and family weekend getaway. A visit to Bushkill is a journey into the beauty, power and grace of nature. Two streams flowing down the mountainside feed the eight waterfalls. Trails and bridges wind through the area—affording incredible views of the falls—into a lush, emerald green forest. The majestic main waterfall drops over the edge of a 100-foot cliff into a pool banked by ferns, mosses and wildflowers. From there, the falls drop another 70 feet through a long gorge strewn with gigantic boulders. Bushkill Falls’ 2015 season is underway so strap on some hiking boots and hit the trails!

House & Garden Show C

elebrate spring renewal at the Waverly Community House! Committed to educational, recreational and cultural opportunities for the community, this valuable non-profit organization will host their Annual House & Garden Show fundraiser the weekend of April 25 and 26. Seeds of the show planted in 1992 have since blossomed into today’s destination to discover the latest trends in home and garden décor, artisan creations, giftware and more. Vendors onsite will offer unique designs and expert advice for both indoors and out. Home improvement experts are ready to discuss how to make your next project a reality. With gardening season in full bloom, landscapers and greenhouse pros will be on hand to “lend a hand” with earning that green thumb! Junior gardeners will even learn a bit of planting plans themselves as Beichler’s Greenhouse returns with their fun and educational workshop for kids. WCH Special Events Coordinator, Alexander MacNamara, reports on what’s new this year with inviting insight to last year’s experience. Calling the House and Garden Committee’s idea for a cookout style luncheon, “A refreshing change,” he also points out prior year’s perks. Describing 2014’s event finds with a friend,” A sort of treasure trove for all things home,” Alexander suggests a Pre-Mother’s Day visit for gifts and gardening inspiration admitting, “We left far from empty handed!”

A-Go for Waverly!

Don’t Forget... Mother’s Day, May 10 is right around the corner... Handmade treasures make great gifts!
