Homegrown Spotlight

Shining the spotlight on Mother’s Day and other magnificent meanings for cherishing time together, we’re focusing on what often comes naturally. From applauding area efforts of offering neighborly savings, to a look at how popular destinations introduce guests to magnificent local talent with free live performances; warmer weather seems to reap its rewards across the region. Much appreciated input from clever shop-keeps opens doors to ideas on what to buy mom and Shawnee’s eagerly awaited outdoor festival lineup leaves a lot of anticipation for weekend fun to come. Closing with a final round of applause to a local young lady who embraced Cover photo: an opportunity to “get her feet wet” designing this edition’s SuperSaver Kevin J. Furst Spotlight, we say good job Becky Sebring and wish all the best for a bright Nature & Landscape Photography creative future.

et’s share some “spotlight” salutations with an up-and-coming designer who created this issue’s Super Saver Spotlight graphic, Becky Sebring. This junior at Pocono Mountain East High School tells what inspires her toward this creative path and plans for her future. TWIP: How long have you been studying Graphic Design Sebring: During my sophomore year I signed up for the class only having a small idea of what graphic design was all about but something about it seemed interesting to me TWIP: Have you broadened your perception of the field & how Sebring: Through the school

district [PMSD] I enrolled in an in-school graphic design internship, where I was able to continue studying and receive assignments, which allowed me to gain real-world experience TWIP: What do you feel that you’ve gained from the experience Sebring: I was able to truly challenge myself, being able to

design and re-design to meet the client’s needs and expectations, in order to create what clearly communicates the message they are looking for TWIP: What does the future hold for Becky Sebring Sebring: I plan to attend Susquehanna University to study graphic design and strategic communications

Best wishes for a bright future from This Week in the Poconos magazine!

id you know… Bushkill Falls was visited prior to being officially opened in 1904. In the late 1800’s, the Peters family rented the property to a farmer where there was an agreement that tourists who traveled by horse and buggy would be charged 10 cents for a walk through his corn fields to view the waterfalls. This clever farmer also sold sarsaparilla ice tea and oats for the horses to visitors. Today, outstanding trails, exquisite scenery and waterfalls continue to draw visitors for a fun filled day. while family friendly festivities engage everyone in outdoor fun including a petting zoo, magic and juggling shows. July 3 bursts on the scene with the Shawnee Annual Fireworks Display celebration benefitting Shawnee Volunteer Fire Company. An outdoor DJ, Uncle Sam Stilt Walker, even scrumptious Hickory Licks barbeque are all in the plans for this Sunday evening with gates opening 7 p.m. and fireworks starting around 9 p.m. Rain Date is July 8. Summer continues to sizzle with Shawnee July 16 and 17 bringing on the brews, brats and more at Poconos’ Wurst Festival.
