visit to Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a journey to yesteryear when family farms fed the nation. As a National Historical Site, Quiet Valley preserves an important piece of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. Reenacting the lives of the German family who lived and worked the farm from the 1760s to 1913, today’s Quiet Valley residents dress in period clothing and conduct farm tours and special events that are both educational and fun. For two weekends in May, when the farm reawakens with new life, Quiet Valley presents one of its most popular programs— Farm Animal Frolic—giving children the opportunity to see and touch baby animals.

of baby bunnies. Cuddle new lambs, thick with soft, woolly fleece or watch baby piglets at play. Enjoy a wagon ride with Gunther and Wilhelm, Quiet Valley’s Clydesdale draft horses. There’s also puppet shows and storytelling along with a hay jump and so much more! Check out the “Sheep Shed” to learn some sheep lore, watch spinning or felting, even try your hand at weaving. Games and crafts geared around wool await! Farm Animal Frolic takes place rain or shine May 16 & 17 along with 23 & 24, from 10 a.m.

Watch chicks hatching from their eggs and feel the velvety fur

to 4 p.m. each Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Both weekends are filled with frolic fun! Don’t miss Kathy Uhler from the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center with shows on local wildlife the 16th at 11:30 and 1:30. Sheep Shearing will take place the 23rd throughout most of the day.

ager to get their feet wet and show the way to wondrous water escapades, Camelback Lodge & Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark unveiled phase one of the $163 million Tannersville project April 23. The media preview also included an invitation to families and friends ready to be the first to try out the high profile resort. Escaping frigid outdoor chills, towels in hand, guests soaked in the sights. Five year old Seamus Burk could hardly contain himself pausing for a pic with mascot “Cami,” as older siblings Mallory and Kiernan held back their enthusiasm alongside grandmom Maureen. Mom, Patti Persia laughed, “It’s 40˚ outside and 85˚ in here!” The Delaware travel agent also noted the added benefit

of a short drive that enhances the destination’s appeal. Coaster aficionado Paul Ruben admitted looking forward to enjoying Aquatopia’s Venus Flytrap. With over 846 different roller coaster rides under his belt, he revealed the excitement of a new ride never ceases. Radio personality Gary Smith ignited anticipation ushering the crowd through a maze of tunnels constructed for the day’s press conference with tempting video tidbits around every turn, all leading to the unveiling of the massive slides surrounding an equally impressive wave pool. Co-Owners Arthur Berry III and Ken Ellis stood seemingly stranded at the center of the water barefoot with shades

joined by Tim Lucke, Time Gantz, Pat Helland and Pete Helland Jr., Partners in Stand Rock Hospitality and Camelback Lodge Co-Owners. Spouting a few words before releasing the waterworks, they dove off into the wet-set with a huge crowd of kids following. Those seeking drier ground enjoyed tours offering a peek into two units within the 453-room lodge. Exquisite architecture, Senator Mario Scavello said, “Gives a warm feeling” included huge windows welcoming breathtaking views of the mountainside. Impressed by the day’s play guests said they’re ready for more. As phase two gets set to open this summer, many are eagerly booking their stay with water-play on their minds come rain or shine.

This Week’s fun fact comes from the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Bill Williams

D

id you know… Pennsylvania whitetail deer start giving birth to fawns around mid-May with the peak of fawning season occurring around Memorial Day weekend! At birth, an average fawn is about 7.5 pounds, the weight of a small housecat. The young deer are born with an excellent camouflage of reddish-brown coats dappled with white spots. When a fawn is lying on the ground or in dry leaves, this coat looks like the sunlight hitting the ground after it passes through the treetops. The nearly scentless fawns use a “hider” strategy, laying motionless on the ground and rarely making a sound to avoid predators. The doe needs to forage often, leaving her fawn(s) unattended. It is almost always when the doe is away that people bump into a fawn. Many mistakenly think that it may have been abandoned. With this in mind...Leave a fawn where it is found and allow the doe to return and nurse her little one.
