Farm Animal Frolic
at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm invites you to the 23rd Annual Farm Get up close and personal Animal Frolic on Saturdays and Sundays, May 21st, 22nd, 28th, and 29th. at Farm Animal Frolic! This is a unique opportunity to see hatching chicks, wiggly baby bunnies, fleecy lambs, and frisky kid goats. Who can resist piglets, with their funny snouts and curly tails? Janie the mule, Sheri and Lori the Belgian work horses, and Bossy the cow will love to see you, too! Attend a free children’s show both days at 1:00pm, play games, try the fish pond and the hay jump, and see sheep shearing demonstrations and a wildlife show. Refreshments are available, and the outdoor brick bake oven will be in operation. Mmmmm! Admission is $8.00/pp; $5.00/ages 3-12; free/ ages 2 and under. Pony and wagon rides will be offered at an extra charge, weather permitting. No smoking or pets are allowed, and the frolic takes place rain or shine. Hours are Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a 19th century educational farmstead located at 1000 Turkey Hill Road, off Business Route 209, just south of Stroudsburg. Shawnee Celtic Festival comes to Shawnee Mountain Ski Area!
The 4th annual Shawnee Celtic Festival brings the sights and sounds of the Emerald Isles, the Scottish highlands, and the Welsh countryside to Shawnee Mountain Ski Area on Saturday and Sunday, May 28th and 29th! This big event features non-stop Celtic music by headliners from Scotland, the Jersey shore, and Philadelphia on the Main Stage; plus, talented local entertainers in the Irish Pub and outside on the Mountain Stage. Highlights from far and near include a bagpipers’ parade, a fiddlers’ jam, pipes and drums, Scottish and Irish dancers, working sheep dogs, Celtic Wizard magic shows, and an Irish juggler. Special kids’ activities include face painting and a Celtic farm petting zoo! Irish, Scottish, and Welsh craft and gift vendors, Celtic food vendors, a wine tent, and malt beverage stations will enhance the festivities. Shawnee Mountain is on Hollow Road in Shawnee-on-Delaware, just off I80 exit 309. The event happens rain or shine, and there is plenty of free on-site parking. MPO Aviation Day benefits Community Hike, bike, drive, or fly to the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport (MPO) on Sunday, May 29th for Aviation Day! Activities include a Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast from 8:00am to 1:00pm, and an all-day open house. Numerous displays will feature antique airplanes and aviation items, antique cars, military equipment, and the Pocono Raceway Pace Car. See a parachute tribute to all veterans at 1:30pm! 1867 Glassworker’s Open House The Dorflinger Glass Museum presents Glassworker’s Open House events from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 28th and 29th! Housed in the former home of renowned glassmaker Christian Dorflinger, amidst the 600-acre Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary, the museum exhibits the largest collection of Dorflinger glass in the country. Christian Dorflinger was trained in glass making, blowing, cutting, and decorating during an 8-year apprenticeship at the Cristalleries de Saint Louis, France. He emigrated to the United States in 1846, establishing several glass factories in the New York area. In 1865, he moved his family to White Mills and built a glass factory and a factory town. An 1867 Glassworker’s House, restored by the Sanctuary, opens for guided tours on select dates. May 22 – Go on an “Adventures to the Ancients” Open Space Hike at Lake Lenape/Caledonia Creek Headwaters in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area from 1:00 to 5:00pm. The Monroe County Environmental Education Center invites you to join them on this open space hike led by Bill Sweeney, an old growth forest enthusiast, botanist and long-time DCNR naturalist and Don Miller, an open space advocate, long-time teacher, botanist and naturalist with Pocono Heritage Land Trust. Just west of the village of Delaware Water Gap lies a picturesque lake called Lake Lenape. Tourism and early resort development saved some of the old-growth forests there and visitors can still bear witness to ancient oak trees that have been growing since the colonial era. Take an easy two-mile hike around Lake Lenape before traveling a few miles to see some of the cleanest waters in Eastern Pennsylvania. Participants will marvel at the headwaters of the Caledonia Creek, a sacred site where water leaves the earth and begins its terrestrial journey surrounded by moss and towering 150-year-old tulip poplar trees. This program will be held from 1:00 to 5:00pm and is free, with suggested donations requested to support the Pocono Heritage Land Trust’s

These garments and accessories of timeless elegance will be on display in a large tent in front of Eckley’s historic Sharpe House for a genteel afternoon of remembering how it used to be. The clothing and accessories of each model will be discussed either by the model or by a commentator. Models from Wilkes-Barre, Jim Thorpe and Eckley will not only parade their finery but be available for questions after the show. Visitors are encouraged to tour the Sharpe House after the show. The bog is special as it is a northern boreal bog, which is very unique for this part of the country. Protected by The Nature Conservancy, the Tannersville bog is a National Natural Landmark. Signs of spring will be everywhere as the group ventures into this unique wetland habitat, which includes many orchids and insecteating plants! Access to the interior of the bog is substantial along a

The bog is special as it is a northern boreal bog, which is very unique for this part of the country. Protected by The Nature Conservancy, the Tannersville bog is a National Natural Landmark. Signs of spring will be everywhere as the group ventures into this
unique wetland habitat, which includes many orchids and insecteating plants! Access to the interior of the bog is substantial along a 1650’ “floating” boardwalk, making for spectacular photo opportunities. Highlights include viewing blooming plants such as marsh marigold, bog rosemary, bog laurel and many others. Meet for the walk at the Environmental Education Center near Bartonsville. Pocono Raceway wins Environmental Excellence Award Picture 4,000 American-made solar panels across 25 acres, comprising Pennsylvania’s largest solar farm as well as the world’s largest-such project at a sports venue. The 3-megawatt (3,000 kilowatt) solar farm was created, without state incentives, as a hedge against increased electricity costs in the post-rate-cap era of energy deregulation. Governor Tom Corbett announces Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, among 13 total project venues across the state, as a winner of the 2011 Environmental Excellence Award. June 4 – The Lacawac Sanctuary, a 520-acre nature preserve on Lake Wallenpaupack, will host a program titled “A Bird in the Hand” from 8:00am until noon. Join Dr. Jeffrey Stratford in exploring the birds of Lacawac and those migrants who pass through the area each spring and fall. Millions of birds journey from their nests in North America to winter in South and Central America, and then return each spring. Dr. Stratford will help identify many species that pass through the area and will demonstrate how scientists use a “mist net.” We some luck, the group may even catch some birds for closer examination and release. The 520-acre Lacawac Sanctuary is a non-profit nature preserve, research field station and historic site located on Lake Wallenpaupack. It is one of the few sites nationwide that is federally recognized as both a National Natural Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. June 4 – Connect with Kestrels with “The Birdman” Paul Karner from 1:00 to 2:30pm at PPL Corporation’s Martins Creek Environmental Preserve, nestled along the shores of the Delaware River in Bangor. In 1978, Paul Karner began a program to provide nesting sites for the American kestrel by placing nesting boxes throughout prime kestrel habitat. These boxes allowed this small falcon to return yearly to raise its young. The program has grown to over 80 kestrel boxes and has allowed Karner, a federally licensed bird bander, to band these birds to study them. Enjoy a slide show of his successes and challenges as he follows several pairs of kestrels throughout the years. The presentation will also showcase live falcons along with some other surprises. A short field trip to see some of the nest boxes he maintains on PPL property will follow his presentation. Bring your camera! The program will be held at the Lower Mount Bethel Welcome Center, 7701 Martins Creek-Belvidere Highway in Bangor (adjacent to Riverton Bridge). June 4 – There will be an Open House at the Old Stone Jail in Honesdale from 10:00am until 1:00pm today. No longer in use,
the historic jail was built in 1859 and is located between the Wayne County Courthouse and 10th Street in Honesdale. The squat stone structure housed Wayne County’s miscreants until 1935. Constructed almost entirely of rough stone, its damp, gloomy interior has most often been compared to a dungeon. “Jailer” Dick Kreitner will be on hand to usher visitors into the 9’x12’ cells as he relates the history of the jail, including numerous jailbreaks and some of its more notorious occupants. The Old Stone Jail Open House is free to the public. Adults and children alike will have fun learning about local frog species while hopping around trying to carefully catch them. Wear boots and plan on getting dirty! The cost to attend is $5. PEEC, a nonprofit center, is located off Route 209 in Dingmans Ferry within the beautiful Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
