Pocono Rodeo’s 2014 Summer Series Set to Thrill at Memorytown USA The success of last year’s Pocono Rodeo set the wheels in motion for more thrills and hopefully not too many spills at Memorytown USA. Professional riders from near and far meander back to this neck of the woods May 24 through to August 31for another amazing summer series jam packed with heart pounding action sponsored in part by Ram Trucks and Empire Real Estate Development. All are invited to experience cowboys at their finest as they compete in these Southern Extreme Bull and Barrel Association events. Each week contestants show off their skills in exciting feats that include bull, bareback and saddle bronc riding, along with barrel racing and team roping. But the action doesn’t just start as the arena gates open. Pre-rodeo festivities kick off at 2 p.m. with pony & paddleboat rides, a petting zoo, as well as, fishing activities to crank up the excitement. While the mesquite aroma billows across the Memorytown grounds sending everyone’s taste buds a-reelin’ for some good down-home barbeque.

Camp Minsi is the Boy Scouts of America property immediately to the east of Lake Naomi that resid along Stillwater Lake. The exact method the property will be protected is not significant. What is significan however, is the fact that all that land will never be developed in competition to Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

The Pocono Mountains offers excitement in many forms. From exhilarating athletic adventures to invigorating nature hikes. But there’s one excursion gaining momentum that appeals to thrill seekers of the laid back sort. The type that’s happy to set aside weeks of physical training; not to mention the need to closely monitor weather reports in hopes of clear skies. Those with an interest to peruse back in time and an eye for an enduring treasure. These adrenaline junkies consider tours to the local antique shops the tops for their day’s agenda. Taking time to lay out clever travel strategies; antique aficionados set out with maps (or Smartphones) in hand ready to navigate the stores nestled neatly in the heart of the region. One such locale known for an assortment that evokes gasps coupled with wide-eyed squeals of joy is BackRoads Antiques & Collectables in Henryville. A little over a year since owners Joseph and Carmen Macarski renovated the former Red Rooster restaurant at the corner of Routes 715 & 314 and this rustic hotspot is hoppin’. Crawling through attics and basements all over Pennsylvania and New Jersey; the pair prides themselves on possessing a keen sense of what their customers seek. “Some things are collectors’ items and some things are just cool,” says Joe telling of the shop’s clientele consisting of collectors, decorators and those seeking just the right item to add pizzazz to a room in their home or office. Carmen’s favorite fixture, “Buddy the Ape” towers over the register attracting the attention of both young and old. Named by their grandchildren Jazmyn, Jewel and Jayden; this colossal gorilla statue stirs up quite a fuss. “Sometimes it’s hard to part with our favorite items,” admits Joe. He spoke of the recent sale of a 1950’s Coca Cola machine that topped his list of downers but says he bounced back as new items come through the door igniting and excitement often. This family-owned business wishes to share their finds with others so be sure to add this must see to your next antique outing.

Newfangled Barbeque Meats with Grill Ready Eats Barbeque Season is upon us and with it comes a growing trend consisting of unique meats and grill ready eats. Whether entertaining a crowd or small family gathering; many desire to set the spatula aside, tossing the apron to the trash so they can join in the outdoor fun and still set mouths salivating with some interesting fare. Paul Otway of Dutch’s Market reveals how 15 years observing patrons shift from the pre-party preparation buys to grill ready convenience led to the Greentown store’s angle on summertime food items. “Nine out of ten people have an idea what they want and we [Dutch’s Market] put it together,” he says; noting the service compares to that of a caterer simply without dishing it out and serving it. He explains how more and more customers have been asking for the not so typical sautéed chicken reporting pre-cooked hot dogs are usually not on their minds when placing orders. The Butcher Shoppe’s Mark Zahra dishes out ideas on a few unique carnivorous cravings for the grill including: kangaroo, crocodile and buffalo. His Pocono Lake store has been preparing exotic meats for over 39 years with a strong following of residents and second home owners many of whom place orders in advance to be frozen for their return to the city. Alongside wife, Debbie, he describes the major difference in grilling delicacies like smoked alligator sausage, lamb burgers and an elk steak is that they are “Very lean with only 5% fat.” He cautions, “Don’t cook them long or they will dry out.” He recommends, “Simple is better” when asked about preparing the cuts beforehand, he strongly opposes marinating as it “masks the flavor.” Light salt, granulated garlic and a delicate rub of extra virgin olive oil for just the right sear works best. He prefers a rich dark chocolate for that perfect finishing touch to the palate complimenting his new commercial neighbor Daley’s Chocolates. Heidi Daley suggests chocolate covered strawberries as a smart finale adding though many respond to invite etiquette with a box of assorted chocolates. Whatever your culinary creativity, or lack thereof, fear not! The Pocono Mountains’ outdoor attraction stems beyond magnificent excursions to an assortment of area eateries, making the decision for eating out one that can be shared at home or abroad.
