Tantalizing BBQ B

arbeque Season is upon us and with it comes a growing trend consisting of unique meats and grill ready eats. Whether it’s tailgating time or entertaining at home; many desire to tie on the apron and join in the outdoor splendor setting mouths salivating with interesting fare. The Butcher Shoppe’s Marc Zahra welcomes this opportunity to dish out some intriguing ideas on a few distinctive cravings for the grill including: kangaroo, elk and buffalo. His Pocono Lake store has been preparing exotic meats, as well as prime beef cuts such as rib-eye, strip and porterhouse steak for over 40 years.

4

The Shoppe’s strong following of residents and second home owners are so captivated by these rarities; they even place orders in advance to be frozen for their return to the city! Alongside wife Debbie, Marc describes the major difference in grilling delicacies like ostrich tenderloin, wild boar burgers and venison strip loin with less than 3% fat. He cautions, “Don’t overcook them as they will dry out,” recommending, “Simple is better.” When asked about preparing the cuts beforehand, he strongly opposes marinating as it “Masks the flavor.” Opting for a touch of extra virgin olive oil and a light coating

of kosher salt, fresh cracked pepper and granulated garlic with just the sear he says works best. The Pocono Mountains’ uncompromised outdoor attraction thrives with the thrill to grill driving swarms to the area’s top shops. Enhance the overall experience and whip up a feast sure to create memories!

Sowing the Seeds

owing the seeds of plant life insight that’s reaped rewards for over 83 years, Ross & Ross considers family the stimulant for growth. Admiration that stems from generations of hands on help has made this Paradise

Valley nursery a trusted source for tips on everything from exotic plants and landscape design, to unique Hypertufa Pots and Fairy Gardens. Third generation Ross rep, Linda Ross-Besecker considers her dad, Jefferson Ross, one of their key ingredients for longevity. “He lives for plants,” she says, also admiring her brother Wayne’s knack for knowing the family business. Sharing that knowledge with creative classes, she considers

an opportunity for customers to not only learn about various pottery and plant practices but to reap the benefit of generations of gardening know how. Visit rossandrossnursery.com for a lineup to signup for their next session!

Ross & Ross Summer Gardening Tip:

“Dead Head,” by removing finished blooms from your hanging baskets & keep fertilizing at the top of your to-do list for lush foliage

Trolley to Baseball L

ackawanna County’s Electric City Trolley joined forces with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders hitting it out of the ballpark—literally as shuttling fans from the Scranton site to PNC Field for games has proved to be a homerun for both organizations. Started over four years ago, ballpark excursion rides have become an increasingly popular attraction.

Double the Play

“I just thought it would be a great partnership,” said LCECT Manager Wayne Hiller describing the unique experience and ticket sale opportunities with the connection. Alleviating traffic hassles can be a thing of the past as many hop on the bandwagon, or in this case trolley, to relax and soak in the sights along the ride to the stadium at Montage. “They [passengers] just don’t want to deal with the traffic,” he reports as season ticket holders often park and participate, along with, those eager to optimize the memory of their first game.

accessible. He also reports an influx of participation by several area businesses and organizations rewarding their employees booking group trips. With trolley rides to and from the event at $11 or Excursion Pricing including game admission and a $2 voucher for the Concession Stand or Team Store at $20; Hiller considers the package a family friendly deal.

August 2 & 23. So—All Aboard! The trolley leaves Steamtown Platform in Downtown Scranton at 12:15 p.m. to catch game times with the exception of June 14’s 2 o’clock game heading out at 1:15 p.m. Reservations are required and book fast so plan at least three days ahead by calling the Electric City Trolley Station at (570) 9636590.

There are still plenty of excursion games left including: June 14 & 28, July 5 & 26, along with

Whether it’s a first or thirty-first day at the park, fans are flocking to the idea. The excursion also opens doors to several who may have missed the chance of taking in a live game. Seating up to 62 people this 1926 JD Brill double center door trolley is handicap
