Celebrate Summer with a Walk in the Poconos! To experience the wild side of the Pocono Mountains, go for a summer walk through the lush woods and meadows anywhere in the region! A diverse range of wildlife abounds in the Poconos’ largely untouched tracts of pristine acreage, giving people the opportunity to enjoy natural surroundings that they otherwise would not have access to. A leisurely stroll through the woodlands will reward hikers with scenes of natural beauty that are as they have been for thousands of years. Delicate wildflowers and other flora flourish in the summer sun for hikers and walkers to enjoy. Among the plant life of the region is a very rare species called rhodora that, within the United States, is only found here in the Pocono Mountains and in the wilds of New Hampshire. This smallest member of the wild azalea family grows locally in damp areas such as along ponds, in wetlands, and in pine barrens. The plants grow to a height of about three feet and can be distinguished by their pale green leaves. People come from hundreds of miles to search for these rare shrubs, which bloom a beautiful purplish-pink flower in mid-May. This plant is restricted to glaciated areas such as the top of the Pocono Plateau. Another interesting resident of the Poconos is the pitcher plant. This carnivorous plant can be found in wet areas including bogs and the sluggish edges around ponds. Identify these plants by the large tubular pitcher and its sizeable flower about two feet off the ground. This plant attracts the insects that are its prey by secreting an odor that bugs find irresistible. The unlucky insects move in closer to investigate and slip down the tube into the plant’s digestive tract. Patches of this sly carnivorous plant can be found in Tobyhanna State Park, in Long Pond and in the Tannersville Bog. Numerous species of animals are active this time of year and just like people, they are out enjoying the sunshine in the Pocono Mountains! It’s lots of fun to find and identify animal tracks, and if you have the time, to follow them and observe a day in the life of a deer or rabbit. Although it’s easier to follow animal tracks in the snow, it is possible to find signs in the warmer months. Look in the soft mud around the many streams and lakes in the area for the tracks of an otter or raccoon.

In stands of hardwood, spot patches of tussled leaves where a grouse may have scratched while foraging for berries, or a fox had disturbed while in pursuit of a wily cottontail. Deer paths and other animal trails are prime areas to investigate while in search of animal prints. Those who take the time to slow down and look can piece together many little woodland dramas by reading the abundant sign anywhere in this mountain land. Bring a pair of binoculars on your walk to get a closer look at the many birds singing their songs and fluttering about. A great variety of bird species many be observed, from noisy downy woodpeckers to brilliant red cardinals and the shy

Waterfalls Await in the Pocono Mountains There is a certain fascination with waterfalls we all experience. How wonderful it is to stand watching the endless rhythm of the rainbow-touched stream as it falls from the height to a sparkling pool below? The Pocono Mountain waterfalls in the following listing are all scenic wonders, perfect for lively picnics with friends and family or for calm meditation and spiritual renewal. Many of the following waterfalls are open to the public, a few are popular attractions charging admission, and some are private, open only to members and guests of clubs and resorts. Some are off the beaten path, so you may have to inquire locally for more detailed directions — sometimes getting there is half the fun! Whichever of these wonderful sites you choose to visit, be sure to obtain permission to enter private property if that is the case. Buttermilk Falls - The waters of Marshalls Creek spill over a broad rock precipice. Route 209 north exit off I-80, about 3 miles. Bushkill Falls - “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Route 209 in Bushkill. Eight cascading waterfalls and miles of nature trails. Also paddleboats and miniature golf. Open daily 9:00am until dusk, April through November; call 588-6682. Glen Onoko Falls - Lehigh Gorge State Park in historic Jim Thorpe, Route 903. Series of waterfalls flows down a steep grade into the Lehigh River. George W. Childs Recreation Site - in the Delaware Water Gap Photo: Anne Martino National Recreation Area, Route 209 North to Dingmans Ferry, F F ll Fulmer F l F ll then three miles west on blacktop road. Waters of Dingmans Creek form three waterfalls - Factory Falls, Falls, and Deer Leap Falls. Indian Ladder Falls - at Skytop Lodge in Skytop, where falls flow over sandstone, siltstone and claystone rocks. Phone 595-7401. Paradise Falls - on the grounds of Paradise Lutheran Association, off Route 940 in Paradise Valley (private property). Pinchot Falls - also known locally as Saw Kill Falls, located off Route 6, on the Pinchot Estate, Grey Towers in Milford. A 100-foot narrow gorge cut through Devonian rock. Raymondskill Falls - in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area between Milford and Dingmans Ferry, off Route 209. Falls drop about 175 feet. Site is historic with Indian Wars background. Resica Falls - near Bushkill on Route 402. Creek descends over sandstones and shales on the grounds of the Boy Scout Reservation. Shohola Falls - on State Gamelands near Route 6, Shohola. Falls run over shale and siltstone rocks. Swiftwater Falls - on the estate of Pocono Manor Inn on Swiftwater Creek, surrounded by a fine stand of rhododendron. Members and guests only. Tobyhanna Falls - just south of Blakeslee on Route 115 as Tobyhanna Creek drains several lakes at the top of the Poconos. About ½ mile west of the highway. Winona Falls - off Route 209, Shoemakersville near Bushkill. On the Saw Creek. While enjoying these waterfalls, remember that although these places are beautiful, visitors must always exercise caution. Water-splashed rocks and paths around streams and rivers can become very slippery, and swimming in these areas is never recommended. Landowners are not always pleasant to meet if you happen to be exploring their property without permission, so be considerate and please do not trespass. If you plan on enjoying some of the mountains’ hidden treasures, use good sense and you’ll have a great time here in the beautiful Pocono Mountains!

Fall into Summer at Bushkill By: Mitzi Miller, Contributing Writer “Everyone should have themselves regularly overwhelmed by nature,” wrote George Harrison, and Bushkill Falls does just that. The Peters family first opened the park to the public in 1904 with a singular path and swinging bridge located over the main falls. Today the park has trails leading to eight different waterfalls. The main waterfall, cascading 100 feet, leads into a gorge flanked by boulders and eventually makes its way to the Delaware River. There are four different trails to traverse which vary in length and difficulty (bring comfortable shoes). The shortest trail is a mere 15 minutes and the most difficult trail is approximately two miles and includes views of all eight falls. Each trail is uniquely lined with indigenous foliage and visited by local wildlife, which are detailed at the wildlife exhibit at the park’s entrance. Camelbeach: Faster Than Ever with Speed Pass! By: Mitzi Miller, Contributing Writer No lines for the waterslides at Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark? Yes, you heard it correctly! Camelbeach is now offering a Speed Pass so you don’t have to stand in line. The Speed Pass reservation system, new to Camelbeach this year, is available online before your visit. Upon your arrival, you will receive a wristband which you scan at one of the park’s kiosks along with your slide of choice. Then you are free to wander the park as you choose. You can cool off in the Kahuna Lagoon Wave Pool, grab a cold drink, post photos on Twitter, or just enjoy the view. Your wristband will indicate when your time is up, and all you have to do is arrive at the front of the line! Don’t procrastinate, though! Speed Pass sales are limited each day. Passes are sold with two levels of convenience: Regular and Premium. Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark is the largest waterpark in Pennsylvania, with over 37 slides, rides and other attractions. Where else are you able to catch a wave, sit on a beach, freefall Hollywoodstyle 25 feet onto a giant airbag and ride through the mountains on a coaster? Hurry! Your adventure is waiting! Sales of the Speed Pass begin on Friday, June 14. Visit www. camelbeach.com or call (570) 629-1661 for more information. Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark is located on Camelback Road in Tannersville, Pennsylvania.
