IndyCars Race Back for Round 2 at

Pocono Raceway

IndyCar drivers from around the world head back to Long Pond eager to scratch that 2nd year itch and take a crack at tackling Pocono Raceway’s tricky triangle July 5 & 6 in the Pocono IndyCar 500. The excitement is building for this heart stopping action merely a few weeks away. With the momentum high, fans prepare to catch a glimpse of these skilled professionals sharing white knuckled grips as they maneuver sharp turns at exceptional speeds. “These Verizon IndyCar Series cars fly around here at 220 miles per hour, all while the drivers have their wheels and heads exposed!” stated Pocono Raceway President/CEO Brandon Igdalsky. Calling the drivers “Real Life Daredevils” the father of two considers July’s event, “A great way to cap off a great holiday weekend for you and the entire family!” Content to watch by the sidelines, he offers a look behind the scenes into a list of drivers headed to the track starting off with Marco Andretti. Grandson to racing legend Mario Andretti, this Nazareth native holds the Pocono Raceway track qualifying record at 221.377 mph. Two Brazilian racers, Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan each share Indy 500 titles with Castroneves capturing three wins and Kanaan recently seizing the 2013 title. Fans are already abuzz that Castroneves’ track side fence climb that nabbed him the name Spiderman will be the sight to see. New Zealand born Scott Dixon’s fascination for Pocono Raceway’s solar farm sheep nearly surpasses his passion to place. Not quite- as the reigning Verizon Indycar Series champion gets set to handle the hairpin turns headed for that winner’s circle. Bringing us back stateside, Ed Carpenter of Indiana carries the title of 2013 and 2014 Indy Pole Winner. Owner and operator of his own race team sponsored by Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka, his sights are clearly set on the finish line. Southern gent Josef Negarden treks up from Tennessee with the fame of naming all of his cars after Disney princesses and a passion for Mexican and Japanese cuisine. James Hinchcliff of Ontario joins the Andretti AutoSport team in car #27. This “Mayor of Hinchtown” fame wraps up the raceway rally of pros preparing to swoop in fueled by guts and a passion for glory. Catch a live shot of all these daring drivers as they rev the engines of their magnificent machines setting massive tires to a high pitch squeal ready to grip the track Independence Day weekend. Visit www.poconoraceway.com and grab your tickets to some high flying action close to home.

Camp Minsi is the Boy Scouts of America property immediately to the east of Lake Naomi that resid along Stillwater Lake. The exact method the property will be protected is not significant. What is significan however, is the fact that all that land will never be developed in competition to Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

The Poconos: H igh E levations E xceed E xpectations The Poconos Mountains- celebrated for its majestic scenery, phenomenal resorts and exhilarating outdoor adventures; there’s no question it ranks high as one of the nation’s pinnacle destinations for where to go, what to do and what to see. Within a two hour car ride from major metropolitan areas including New York and Philadelphia with an increasingly loyal following from New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland this vacation hotspot boasts recognition as a phenomenal place to revisit. Unbound by seasonal constraints, the Pocono Mountains’ top resorts have used that geographic plus to their advantage. Cleverly utilizing spacious facilities for more than expected, their teams ensure vacationers and residents alike enjoy year round entertainment by hosting events including popular extreme sports challenges, along with shows for all ages. Camelback Mountain in Tannersville leaves little to no down time after the spring thaw ceases snow making. Hosting regional events including the Civilian Military Combine and family friendly shows like Cole Bros. Circus, their doors seem to never close. Transitioning from a ski and snowboarder’s paradise, to Camelbeach Waterpark’s refreshing summer oasis; with CBK’s zipline and tree top adventures keeping things moving right along, they pride themselves as keeping an eye on community growth. “Camelback Mountain Resort has always offered outdoor enthusiasts and families a variety of seasonal activities,” says CoOwner Arthur Berry III adding, “We also host a variety of events including mud and adventure runs, the circus and on June 20th the world’s largest swimming lesson allowing us to give back to the community and attract guests.” Pocono Raceway President Brandon Igdalsky recently noted more than $30 million has been reinvested in the track since 2007. He considers it money well spent as the Long Pond venue rakes in thousands of fans to the area for not only nationally televised NASCAR and Indy Car racing but also a slew of grueling outdoor enthusiast challenges including last April’s Tough Mudder and the Warrior Dash slated for August 23rd. He echoes Berry’s sentiments that reinvesting in the community ranks high as the catalyst in igniting enthusiasm for the resort with not only repeat visitors from afar but also local fans bringing the track full circle, or triangle, with well rounded fun.

FYI Father’s Day on the Fly The consensus is in - most Dads are content with a lounge chair, tall glass of lemonade (or other libation) and a thick juicy steak on the grill to fulfill their Father’s Day wishes. For the most part families are eager to oblige; yet the temptation of encouraging Pop to avoid the plop can be too much to endure. As June 15 rapidly approaches and a wealth of excitement surrounds the area with inviting options for the entire family to enjoy; there are three simple rules to follow in hopes of aiding his day along the path to top notch status: Rule #1: Avoid gifts that include the words “flora” and “dazzling.” Wrap up # some creepy crawlers from Woehrle’s Bait Shop in Mount Pocono then head off to one of the Pocono Mountain’s popular lakes. Paradise Fishing Preserve in Paradise Valley and Big Brown Fish & Pay Lakes in Effort let him cast off with “no license required.” Priding themselves as the spot “Where the fish are always biting”; Dad can still relax while he reels in a keeper. Rule #2: Give him a surprise when he walks in the door. Send him off for a round of golf while you setup a shady spot in the hammock where he can smell the # aroma of coals searing some carnivorous eats. The popular manicured grounds at Pocono Manor ranks high as one of this area’s favorites. Rule #3: Let this be the day when you agree he is right. While this one may be a toughie for some, present company included, remember this is his time to shine. If he’s all geared up for the ambiance of a historic tour through Lackawanna Coal Mine over a stroll along the shore praise him on his wise decision. After all, you can always say it was his idea to spend the holiday in the Pocono Mountains with its # limitless possibilities for Father’s Day fun! As this collection of suggestions serve merely as guides, remember the words of one area Dad in response to the question asking,”What is your ideal day?” “I just want them not to forget!” he said with sly snicker and clever wink. Happy Father’s Day from This Week and beyond...

Trolley to Baseball: A Unique Experience for all!

Lackawanna County’s Electric City Trolley has joined forces with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders baseball organization for a double play success shuttling fans to games throughout the summer. Started over three years ago, ballpark excursion rides have become an increasingly popular attraction. “I just thought it would be a great partnership,” says LCECT Manager Wayne Hiller describing the unique experience and ticket sale opportunities the connection would bring. Alleviating traffic hassles can be a thing of the past as many hop on the bandwagon, or in this case trolley, to relax and soak in the sights along the ride to the stadium at Montage. “They [passengers] just don’t want to deal with the traffic,” he reports as season ticket holders often park and participate, along with, those eager to enhance the memory of someone’s first game. Whether it’s a first or thirty-first day at the park, fans are flocking to the idea. The excursion also opens doors to several who may have missed the chance of taking in a live game. Seating up to 62 people this 1926 JD Brill double center door trolley is handicap accessible. He also reports an influx of participation by several area businesses and organizations rewarding their employees booking group trips. Complimenting the collaborative efforts of both organizations he states, “Bob [McLane/SWRR] has been really good to us.” As liaison; McLane, works closely with Hiller getting game day tickets together in advance for the group. “[The arrangement] has been fantastic,” he says also describing the fan’s take as; “A nice well rounded experience while attending the game.” Lackawanna County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Board President Ron Prislupski compliments the collaboration with, “It’s convenient, affordable, fun and adds a new twist to both attractions,” adding “We’re thrilled the rides have been so popular.” With trolley rides to and from the event at $11 or Excursion Pricing including game admission and a $2 voucher for the Concession Stand or Team Store at $20; Hiller considers the package a family friendly deal. There are still plenty of excursion games left: June 22, July 27, August 3, August 10 and August 31. So- All Aboard! The trolley leaves Steamtown Platform in Downtown Scranton at 12:15 p.m. to catch these 1:05 game times. Reservations are required and book fast so plan at least three days ahead by calling the Electric City Trolley Station at (570) 963-6590.
