Kittatinny Canoes’ River Cleanup: 25 Years Keeping the Delaware Ship Shape
Over 70 miles of river with 439.98 tons of trash collection makes for one serious environmental cleanup as Kittatinny Canoes completes a quarter century tackling the task in their annual On and Under the Delaware River Cleanup July 21st through 23rd. The Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River, along with, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area are the targets of this massive preservation effort that has enlisted thousands of volunteers over the years. The three day long exertion kicks off at Kittatinny Campgrounds’ site in Barryville, New York with an 8:30 a.m. breakfast and introductions at 9:15. The cleanup keeps moving right along with Tuesday’s site set meeting next to the Dingman’s Ferry Bridge. Sorting all the trash collected wraps up the final day at the group’s Matamoras Base. An impressive yet still disheartening tally of 8,547 tires and over 8,500 pounds of aluminum cans reminds all of the massive buildup one piece of litter can snowball into. So they ask everyone to bring it don’t fling it to the nearest garbage can and help the Kittatinny stand in cutting back on those colossal numbers and lean towards the less is best mantra. Ruth and Dave Jones tell of plans to continue the yearly campaign thanking volunteers for their help in tidying what the Kittatinny crew fondly refers to as “Ruth’s Delaware River.” Calling the annual event a “big reunion” of friends the Kittatinny “family” hopes to encourage all those who revel in the aquatic splendor to consider joining in with the 100 volunteers per day quota by calling 1(800) 356-2852 to RSVP. More information can be found at www.kittatinny.com.

Local Breast Cancer Rally’s 5K ready for Pinecrest The Lake Naomi/Timber Trails Breast Cancer Rally has illustrated amazing numbers over the years and with the 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk through Pinecrest July 12 adding to the cause; it looks like yet another year of taking it to the streets for some phenomenal community support. “All the money raised here stays here,” tells Event Co-Director Sarah Naughton. She reports 2013’s $7,000 5K bounty added to Lake Naomi/Timber Trails Breast Cancer Rally’s total of over $70,000 made for a stellar year. She explained, “Linda Creed Breast Cancer Organization works with Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center [East Stroudsburg] to distribute funds to women in need.” Naughton commented on last year’s event stating, “We were beyond thrilled with the number of participants, volunteer support and the overall support of the community.” She predicts the same overwhelming public response and more as spectators join participants shouting words of encouragement along the route, as well as, offering hugs and cheers at the finish where the fun continues with raffle prizes galore. Run or lend your support to participants and the breast cancer organization with registration starting at 7:00 a.m. and a 9 a.m. kickoff. Go to www.breastcancerrally.org for details.

Tobyhanna Township Raising the Bar on Annual Community Day Celebration
15
The fireworks festivities may fizzle after the Fourth but fear not Tobyhanna Township is gearing up for a fantastic Community Day Celebration July 12 filled with their own fireworks, live music and tons of family friendly outdoor fun starting at 2 p.m. “The goal is to make this community united and help residents know our Government Center is not only here for residents but as a place to gather as friends,â€? described Township Manager Phyllis Haase on planning the popular event. Remarking about the generosity of all the businesses and volunteer organizations in “giving back to the communityâ€? by helping prepare for the day filled with food and other open-air savoir fare including a horseshoe tournament, hot dog eating contest and car show; she noted is “what exemplifies the meaning of communityâ€? for her. Fire Trucks and a K9 demonstration by Pocono Mountain Regional Police K9 Unit are expected to rally excitement while history buffs catch a glimpse of the Historical Association of Tobyhanna Township’s impressive display of the area’s history. Haase revealed if not for Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Fire Company and business owners Papillon & Moyer along with Haines & Kibblehouse; the idea of this year’s FOOD fireworks at dusk may have been ORKS W E IR F extinguished. She went on to thank at Car Show 2PM to 5PM MUSIC the group, as well as, everyone else Dusk Township History Display involved in planning then suggested Fire Trucks • Bingo • and More! playing at this year’s free admission event.

Shawnee Riverfest

3 Years Rockin’ the River
The Delaware River will be a bed of hot music mayhem as Shawnee Riverfest kicks off its third year running with a two day extravaganza July 12 and 13. Returning to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, the event with a portion of the proceeds benefitting East Stroudsburg Salvation Army has tripled its numbers with attendance skyrocketing from 250 to 750 since its 2012 start. Focused on providing “something for everyone” organizer Gil Coronado of CILA Management harvested a variety of artists for the stage and overall atmosphere. With bounce houses ready to entertain the little ones as Moms and Dads enjoy “A lazy Sunday afternoon listening to great music,” he explains the layout. The Race 2 Riverfest pre-party kicks off the fun Saturday at Delaware Water Gap’s Sycamore Grille where attendees get a taste of the brilliant performers from 5 to 10 p.m.; then it’s off to rest for Riverfest. R2R keeps on rolling featuring canoes with 30 spots open for participants at $25 apiece in a 1 1/2 mile canoe race up then down the Delaware from Noon to 1:00 p.m. Winner takes the fame and claims a prize on stage. Noon also ushers in DJ Ruby spinning the tunes with Pocono 96.7 Radio talent Gary Smith, Elisa Chase and Christina Luna ready to convert Sunday to “Funday” at 1 p.m. as the trio MC’s Riverfest’s electrifying free concert including 10 artists from near and far. With Special Performances by Kendall Phillips of American Idol, Mario Sebastian the brilliant musician who’s worked alongside Marc Anthony and more counting Pocono crews like the cast of Ring of Fire now playing at Shawnee Playhouse and Fusia Dance Company; Coronado is confident numbers will continue growing as Riverfest keeps flowing.
