Hiking the Poconos “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” —John Muirr With hundreds of miles of trails that wind past waterfalls, through dense forests, around glacial lakes and up steep slopes, the Pocono Mountains take hiking to scenic heights. You can choose a leisurely hike along the McDade Trail in the Delaware Water Gap p National Recreation Area near Shawnee-on-Delaware, or along the floating boardwalks thatt allow you to walk through the wetlands of the Tannersville Bog. fers 1,306 acres of Experienced hikers will enjoy the challenging trails of Big Pocono State Park, which offers ern border of the Pocono rugged terrain on the summit and slopes of Camelback Mountain. Blazing across the southern Mountains, the Appalachian Trail is among the country’s most iconic hikes. Boulder Field, in Hi Hickory k R Run S State P Park, k tells the story of the Wisconsin Glacial Period. 15,000 years ago, the Laurentide Continental Glacier began moving south out of the Arctic, reaching its lowest point in what became Hickory Run State Park, and leaving behind a tundra landscape when most of the soil washed away. Remaining are rocks and the shattered top layer of bedrock. The result is Boulder Field.

Here are four additional trails for blazing your path through the Pocono Mountains: Known as “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls features eight waterfalls cascading over the primeval rocks and slate walls that form the uplands of the Pocono Mountains. As one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful and dramatic natural sights, Bushkill Falls makes an ideal daytrip for hikers. Two streams flowing down the mountainside feed the eight waterfalls. Trails and bridges wind through the area—affording incredible views of the falls—into a lush, emerald green forest. When you go: Take I-80 to exit 309, Route 209 North. Turn left onto Bushkill Falls Road at the traffic light in Bushkill. For more information: (570) 588-6682, www.visitbushkillfalls.com.

The Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area is approximately 130 acres of protected land featuring waterfalls that create deep pools of water bordered by rock-strewn banks. Walk along the Creek Trail to the lookout for an awesome view of the falls. When you go: Head to State Ave. near the intersection of Routes 940 and 423 in Pocono Pines. For more information: www.tobyhannatownship.org.

The rugged terrain of Gouldsboro State Park makes for a challenging, invigorating hike. Several very rocky sections on the 5.8-mile Prospect Rock Trail will keep you on your toes. When you go: Take I-380 to exit 13 to PA-507. The park is one half mile south of the village of Gouldsboro. Tobyhanna State Park is nearby. For more information: (570) 894-8336, www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/ gouldsboro/.

Located within the Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area, Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) offers six scenic hiking trails. Try the Ridgeline Trail! Allow three hours to hike this 4.5-mile path. It is blazed in yellow and begins at the forest edge off of the front parking lot behind Cabin #1. The trail wanders through expansive oak-hickory forests and shady hemlock ravines, and around numerous vernal wetlands. The terrain is hilly, and in one section where the trail courses over a rock ledge, additional care should be taken. This trail begins and ends along with the red-blazed Scenic Gorge Trail behind Cabin #20. Follow PEEC’s Campus Road back to the main building. When you go: Take I-80 to Route 209 in Marshalls Creek. Continue on Route 209 North to the intersection of Emery Road and Briscoe Mountain Road in Dingmans Ferry. For more information: www.peec.org.
