Summer Fun at the
35
Shawnee Playhouse
Action! Laughter! Romance! Theatre lovers both new and seasoned can expect zany antics and tense drama live at the Shawnee Playhouse! This summer’s catalogue is rich with diverse plays and gs musicals that perfectly fit romantic evenings for two, fun get-togethers with friends, or even blast outings for the whole family. Enjoy the works of the talented Joe DiPietro! In All Shook Up, a town set in its ways is spun on its head with the arrival of a rascally rocker. Attendees may expect slick hair and even slicker Elvis Presley tunes. DiPietro’s I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change presents a series of vignettes that document different stages of romantic relationships. You’ll tear up in one moment, and in the next you’ll erupt with a belly-laugh! The King and I tells the sweeping story of a king, his children, and the governess that changes everything. Set in 1860s Siam, this regal tale of family and loyalty will tug at the heartstrings long after the final bow. In that vein, if history happens to be your cup of knowledge, the playhouse offers a multimedia play in Shawnee Story. Don’t forget to bring the kids! Catch a children’s production and whisk away to lands fantastic and hilarious in The Emperor’s New Clothes and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. The Shawnee Playhouse is located on River Road in Shawnee-on-Delaware. Behold Boulder Field ! Boulder Field, located in Hickory Run State Park, is a National Natural Landmark and a true scenic wonder. The vast “field” of stone is a fossil and a relict, its contents left behind after the last ice advance. Hickory Run’s Boulder Field is a potpourri of loosely-packed boulders which range in size from a few inches to 25’ in length. The surprisingly flat field measures 400’ wide, 1,800’ long and about 10’ deep. The boulders are predominantly red sandstone, and trend from angular shapes in the east side of the field to more rounded shapes in the west. About 15,000 years ago, such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast, but gradual weathering and climate change have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fields. Only in special places, such as Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain. Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. Boulder Field is easily accessed via Boulder Field Road, or the scenic 3.5-mile Boulder Field hiking trail. To learn more about this unique natural wonder, call the Hickory Run State Park Office at (570) 443-0400 or check out www.visitpaparks.com. If you’re looking to share the experience with fellow hikers, contact the Pocono Outdoor Club (POC)! The club sponsors numerous hikes at Boulder Field and other recreation destinations throughout the Poconos each year. For more information, log on to www.poconooutdoorclub.org. For trail maps and information on hiking in Pennsylvania, head to www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ recreation/hiking/where/index.htm.
