celebration of early American crafts and skills, Quiet Valley’s 10th Annual Heritage Craft Day August 6, invites visitors to witness the creativity that characterized early Pennsylvania settlers. This hands-on opportunity introduces skills from weaving, spinning and bobbin lace; to horn work, pottery and blacksmithing all in one place. Continuing the “hands-on” thread, guests can enjoy a presentation of traditional toys and games where they can tryout a variety of samples “for some old fashion fun.” A children’s area offers the younger crowd a chance to craft a simple toy or rag doll for themselves; along with QV’s master puppeteer, Bonnie Scott, teaching puppet making.

Calling the event, “A great day of fun, entertainment and education,” Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm’s Deb DiPasquale adds, “People really seem to enjoy the opportunity to see close up how these crafts are made but most especially they like to try them out for themselves!”

Applauding the day as a chance to “Train up heritage crafters for the future,” she comments, “It would be a shame for these skills to be lost.”

“A great day of fun, entertainment and education!” - Deb DiPasquale, Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm

focus on “Goods from the Woods” awaits all at this year’s Festival of Wood lumbering into Grey Towers National Historic Site, August 6 and 7. Aged 12 years to perfection, guests of this family-friendly free event will find various crafts and activities focusing on the wonders of wood in everyday living as a great way to chip away the day.

Considered “a celebration of our natural and cultural heritage of wood” it’s only fitting that Grey Towers, the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of our nation’s Forest Service, serves as host. Melody, beauty and aroma splinter off the seemingly endless applications of wood. From musical instruments, chain saw carved art and unique crafts; to children’s game workings—the splendor of wood is quite a sight to be seen. New this year, wood craftsmen offering one-of-a-kind wood items for sale will be “planted” onsite, along with a special

artifacts exhibit that illustrates Gifford Pinchot’s “affinity for fishing.” Free parking, shuttle and admission lay the groundwork for building monumental family memories so don’t miss the Festival of Wood 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10-4 Sunday. For
