Grey Towers Hosts Fee-Free Day, Ice Cream Social

On Sunday, August 11, the Grey Towers Heritage Association and the U.S. Forest Service at Grey Towers will present a Fee-Free Day and Ice Cream Social at the Grey Towers National Historic Site in Milford. All are welcome to enjoy free ice cream and mansion tours in honor of Gifford Pinchot’s 148th birthday! Pinchot, a former Pennsylvania Governor and founder of the U.S. Forest Service, lived and hosted famous ice cream socials at Grey Towers.

This spirited birthday celebration will begin at 10 a.m., with all three floors of the mansion open to visitors until 4 p.m. Free ice cream will be served in the site’s outdoor amphitheatre from 2 to 4 p.m. Local band The Lost Ramblers will provide live music for the event, and educational films, including footage of President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 dedication of Grey Towers, will be shown throughout the day. In lieu of an admission fee, the Grey Towers Heritage Association requests the donation of a non-perishable food item. Collected items will be passed on to a local food pantry. The Grey Towers National Historic Site is located off of Old Owego Turnpike on Grey Towers Drive in Milford. For additional information, visit www.greytowers.org or call (570) 296-9630.

Mountain View Vineyard: Rooted and Growing in the Poconos In Stroudsburg, picturesquely set along a stretch of emerald hillside, is Mountain View Vineyard & Winery, a family-owned and operated boutique winery with deep local roots and a green, growing domain. What started as a pastime for owners Randy and Linda Rice has evolved into a progressive, sustainably managed business attracting wine lovers from the Pocono Mountains region and beyond. More than a decade ago, after a trip to the Finger Lakes, an inspired Randy Rice planted six varieties of grapes along his driveway’s split rail fence. When the plantings flourished, he and Linda decided to clear their nearly six-acre property, and began cultivating their mountainside vineyard. Over ten years, and 2,000 vines later, the estate has grown to include a breathtaking vineyard, a winemaking facility, two tasting bars, a gift shop and a brand new distillery. Mountain View Vineyard is operated as sustainably as possible. Grapes are hand-tended, grown pesticide-free and fermented in a winemaking facility that is heated and cooled using geothermal and solar energy. The vineyard’s 11 wines and two sparkling wines contain remarkably low counts of sulfites compared to industry standards, and are paired, during tastings, with all-natural snacks. Nine of the unique, indigenously flavored wines are made entirely from grapes grown on the premises; the others blended with grapes sourced from within 30 miles of the site. During the summer months, Mountain View Vineyard is open to the public for shopping and tastings every Thursday through Sunday. Vineyard and winemaking facility tours are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 and 3 p.m. Special events, including Sangria Saturdays and Strummin’ Slushy Sundays are featured on weekends throughout the season. The new Mountain View Distillery will be unveiled in a Grand Opening event on Sunday, September 1 from noon to 6 p.m. The addition of this unique facility makes Mountain View Vineyard one of only two winery/distilleries in the state of Pennsylvania. Visit Mountain View Vineyard & Winery on Neola Road in Stroudsburg and discover how one couple’s passion-fueled venture is yielding sweet surprises in Distillery Opens the Poconos! For more information, call (570) 619-0053 or visit September 1 www.mountainviewvineyard.com.
