S

cenic splendor that is Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm invites the exquisite works of talented artisans to share the spotlight at this year’s Pocono State Craft Festival Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23. Cosponsors Pocono Arts Council and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen describe the gathering as a way to, “Celebrate the heritage, beauty and quality of Pennsylvania Crafts” with fine jewelry, baskets, stained glass, pottery and so much more. Adding to this shopper’s delight, guests can witness the creative process as raw material transitions to finished product.

“Culturally enriching weekend” 4

Hosting the festivities since 2008, Quiet Valley’s Deb DiPasquale considers PSCF, “A culturally enriching weekend,” adding, “I feel the farm makes a beautiful setting for the event.” With heritage craft demonstrations that include black smithing along with outdoor artisanal bread bakes and wagon rides the site brings the word fun out in this fundraiser benefitting all three non-profit groups. A feat Deb triumphantly calls, “A win-win!” From the festive sounds of Saturday’s Bluegrass and Gospel music courtesy of the Lost Ramblers to the Dixieland

sounds of the Dixie Gents Sunday along with an interactive children’s area and festival foods, there’s fun in the forecast for the entire family! Pocono State Craft Festival runs rain or shine from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday returning 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6 with children 12 and under FREE. uck-a-Shuck oysters at Smuggler’s Cove reeled in our attention for This Week’s Weekend Where-To. Was it the name? Perhaps... but what’s in a name? Well we learned a lot, as our friendly hostess Jessica shared details on the Tannersville hotspot’s raw deal. A lounge area with seven varieties of oysters from $1 to $1.50 a piece, along with a bushel of clam varieties each at 50 cents, it only makes sense to make way to Smuggler’s Castaways Bay!

et apart from the commercial district off Route 715 affords the unique charm that is House of Candles. A virtual melting pot of family friendly activities this Tannersville destination recognized as, “The oldest candle shop of the Poconos” tells the tale of the Coover family. A third generation candle making lineage started back in 1963 transitioning from major wholesale manufacturing to modern day retail blends sights, scents and sounds with a “Please Touch” concept to the shop. Acquiring the business from his father, Ed Coover joined by wife Debbie, have continued the legacy with son Joel adding candle carving expertise to the mix.

“We use our location to our advantage,” he says describing the picturesque barn yard backdrop accommodating farm animals including two expectant miniature pony mares! While wood carving demonstrations augment the outdoor appeal, industry knowledge and candle craftsmanship enhance the indoors.

Calling the experience, “Something the public really likes,” Coover tells how ideas evolve to lasting memorabilia. From favorite sports teams or recognizable fairytale princesses, to wedding invitations and anniversary photos, the latest in LED tea lighting has carved a lasting niche in the trade.

A rustic barn siding entry extends an invitation to all to explore floors filled with exquisite creations. While the crisp scents pull guests in, it’s the opportunity to experience candle carving, hand dipping using HOC’s FDA approved wax, even designing your own customized candle that keeps them coming back.

Creatively waving wax limits, fire starter logs using elaborate wicks have made igniting campfire kindling a breeze. That focus on evolving, translates to merchandise while the advantage of onsite candle making remains a perk in House of Candles’ pricing and product guarantee.
