nvision descending slowly 300 feet beneath the earth in a mine car through an anthracite coal mine originally opened over 150 years ago. Sunlight faintly waning in the distance as your group of up to 28 passengers continues its journey alongside a miner; while underground gangways and rock tunnels take you past three veins of hard coal. Quiet Valley Welcomes

Pocono State Craft Festival D

istinctive crafts and more await all amidst the scenic splendor that is Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm at the 28th Annual Pocono State Craft Festival Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24. Fine jewelry, woodworking, stained glass and pottery are but a few of the items adding to this shopper’s delight as Dixieland and Bluegrass music echoes through the hillside while friends feast on festival foods. Calling PSCF a “community partnership at its best” Quiet Valley’s Deb Dipasquale compliments co-sponsors the Pocono Arts Council and the Pocono Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen for their efforts in bringing this culmination of noteworthy professionals behind such talented creations together for the two day affair. She notes how the Valley’s farmscape adds to the equation enhancing the event atmosphere of “beautiful fine art and crafts.”

The Pocono Mountains is an area bursting with fascinating facts! From historical and environmental, to wildlife and much more that noteworthy area organizations are eager to share.

T

his Week’s Fun Fact comes from Rick Bodenschatz with the Historical Association of Tobyhanna Township.

Did you know... Poor maps of the new world led to King Charles II granting the same land that became the domain of both Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Fighting blossomed to war in 1769 between settlers from Connecticut and Pennsylvanians who already laid claim to the lands. Interrupted by the Revolutionary War then resumed in 1784, combating finally ceased 10 years later after both sides accepted the decision of the Continental Congress. This was known as the Yankee-Pennamite War.

Boulder d l o h e B F ie ld ! B

oulder Field, located in Hickory Run State Park, is a National Natural Landmark and a true scenic wonder. The vast “field” of stone is a fossil and a relict, its contents left behind after the last ice advance. Hickory Run’s Boulder Field is a potpourri of loosely-packed boulders which range in size from a few inches to 25’ in length. The surprisingly flat field measures 400’ wide, 1,800’ long and about 10’ deep. The boulders are predominantly red sandstone, and

trend from angular shapes in the east side of the field to more rounded shapes in the west. About 15,000 years ago, such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast, but gradual weathering and climate change have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fields. Only in special places, such as Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain.

Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono

Mountains. Boulder Field is easily accessible via Boulder Field Road, or the scenic 3.5-mile Boulder Field hiking trail.

To learn more about this unique natural wonder, call the Hickory Run State Park Office at (570) 4430400 or check out www. visitpaparks.com. For trail maps and information on hiking in Pennsylvania, head to www. dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ recreation/hiking/where/ index.htm.
