Eckley Hosts Traditional Music Festival Celebrate coal mining music and heritage at Eckley Miners’ Village! The former anthracite mining community will host a Traditional Music Festival on Sunday, September 15. Traditional music was always an important part of village life, especially for immigrants carving out a new life in a new land. Of the many ethnic groups that passed through Eckley, several left their mark on the community in the form of music. The first event of its kind to be held at Eckley in several years, this week’s festival will celebrate the music of many cultures. Three local bands will perform a range of traditional tunes, from lively polka pieces to country compositions. The Donegal Weavers, a traditional Irish band from Wilkes-Barre, will perform original mining melodies; The Pennsylvania Villagers will present popular polka songs, and The Hometown Boyz, an Avoca-based band, will play a variety of country, bluegrass and Americana tunes. Gates open at noon on Sunday, September 15. Music begins at 1 p.m. and plays through early evening. The outdoor concert is free with museum admission. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for children. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. For additional information, call (570) 636-2070 or visit www.eckleyminersvillagemuseum.com. Eckley Miners’ Village is located off of Route 940 in Luzerne County, PA.

Fun at Fernwood Resort Slide, swing and soar into fun at Fernwood! The Bushkill Group Inc., owners of Fernwood Resort and The Villas at Tree Tops and Fairway, recently announced the launch of Pocono Mountain Adventures with the building of two new attractions: Pocono TreeVentures and Blue Lightning All-Season Tubing. Pocono TreeVentures offers family-friendly outdoor aerial forest adventures with five courses of varying levels of difficulty. Each course consists of “bridges” between tree platforms that are constructed of rope, cable and wood configurations, creating over 66 unique challenges for memorable forest fun. Blue Lightning All-Season Tubing sits on the slope that, in winter, becomes the Fernwood Winter Fun Center. The newly constructed attraction features two 427’ all-weather tubing lanes and a Magic Carpet conveyor lift. The lanes are made of a blue synthetic turf-like material. Tubes glide easily over the slick surface, creating exciting downhill tubing experiences in any season. Fernwood Resort is located off of Route 209 in Bushkill. For information about Pocono TreeVentures, Blue Lightning Tubing and other exciting on-site activities, visit www.fernwoodresortpoconos.com or call (888) 337-6966.

Apple Butter-Making Day at Bushkill Falls Saturday, September 28 is Apple Butter-Making Day at Bushkill Falls! Stop by the “Niagara of Pennsylvania” and discover the day-long process of reducing apples down to rich apple butter! Apple butter is a concentrated form of applesauce, made by slowly cooking apples with cider or water until sugar in the apples caramelizes. The result is a buttery preserve that has been an autumn favorite since colonial times. At Bushkill Falls, apple butter is made in a 50-gallon copper pot. Guests are encouraged to take a turn at stirring the fragrant mixture, and enjoy some entertainment while the batch comes together! Representatives from the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will host wildlife presentations in the site’s pavilion at 1 and 2 p.m., and the Lost Ramblers will play bluegrass music from noon to 4 p.m. The apple butter should be ready to taste and take home by mid-afternoon. In case of rain, Apple Butter-Making Day will be moved to Sunday, September 29. The event, parking and use of the picnic areas are free; fees apply to other park activities. For more information, call (570) 588-6682 or go to www.visitbushkillfalls.com. Bushkill Falls is located off of Route 209 in Bushkill, Pennsylvania.
