s 5K enthusiasts continue conquering clever takes on the endurance run, Country Junction joins forces with Waldorf Entertainment and Carbon Adventure Racing for a spooky spin on the sport with September 19’s Zombie Run or Rot challenge. Hearts race as participants dodge the drooling departed tackling treacherous obstacles across The Waldorf Estate at Country Junction. Leaping from constructed ledges and makeshift calamities, this fitness feat has created quite a stir returning for its second year at the Lehighton destination. Coordinator, Angela Moyer considers ZRR, “Great entertainment while getting fit.” Noting the option to “Run or Rot,” she tells how some have chosen to change roles transforming in this year’s event from training to tackle the trek to terrorizing trekkers as costumed zombies.
opportunity to get involved lobbing lumps of “Jell-O Brains” to help out runners. Day of Runner Rates Range from Elite Runner $70, Runner $60 to Student $55 with a Rotter Rate of $30 arriving 1 1/2 hour early for makeup and a mission to “Grab as many [of the three vital organ] flags as possible one at a time.”
“Fun for an entire family to enjoy”
The Zombie Run or Rot challenge starts 9 a.m. and is open to all ages. Plasma to pumpkins—Country Junction’s annual Great Pumpkin Festival rolls in the weekend after and runs September 26 to October 25. Take time to absorb the amazing sights, sounds and activities that continue to make this a Pocono Mountains’ top pick for an assortment of merriment. “Here we celebrate families,” Moyer says maintaining the Country Junction Event Center’s goal, “To create fun for an entire family to enjoy.”

eep in the heart of Pocono Mountain territory sits a fisherman’s prerequisite for luring the region’s top catches. Follow most cast lines and you’ll likely find an alluring Woehrle’s Bait Shop critter on the hook ready to bait everything from NEPA rivers’ Large Bass and Pike, to lakes’ Catfish. Known as “THE Pocono Bait Shop,” this Mount Pocono site’s line on anglers’ needs, along with when and where to use it, has owner Jeff Woehrle looking back admiring the timeline of his bait shop. Over 40 years ago, a 15 year old Woehrle, began trapping minnows as a hobby. Since then his passion for supplying the sport has evolved adding mail-order worms that developed an impressive nationwide dealer following.
boosts the tackle titan to top ranks among followers. A March start and October waterway wane, Woehrle appreciates the warm weather rush with 11 year staffer Rita Morris by his side though admitting, “I do like that it slows a little in the winter time so I can recharge.” Recognizing these loyal patrons also netting a second generation to his local destination, he extends his gratitude with applause for introducing today’s youth to the love of the increasingly popular outdoor sport.
“It never stopped growing,” he says.
“It never stopped growing”
Flourishing from creepy crawlers fish find irresistible, coupled with an understanding of the logistics in acquiring just the right bait like the daunting Hellgrammite, Woehrle’s expertise surfaces as he describes this Dobsonfly larva commonly used in river fishing. While elusive in Pennsylvania, as it cannot be caught and sold in the Commonwealth, a line on where to properly acquire the critter out of state

Cave Lantern Tours
y f i t s My A
“
n abundance of ghost stories have occurred at Crystal Cave over the past 144 years,” shares Kathy Campbell intriguing visitors to experience the Kutztown destination’s ominous past through Halloween Ghost Lantern Tours. With select dates throughout October, she considers the “Mysterious feeling of being inside a dark cave” the catalyst compelling visitors to cast aside apprehension and succumb to curiosity delving deep into the cavernous realm.
Discovered in the early 1870’s, she tells of news records indicating mysterious deaths speckled through time. From the misfortune of one employee found at the base of a stairway, to another’s uncertain demise in a bed of straw. All seem to forge a macabre reasoning for unexplained occurrences that include flickering of lights on and off, echoes of heavy footsteps, even keys being pulled as a means of perhaps faltering attempts to lock a door.
Admitting times of hesitation facing the dark cavity, with a chilling experience of her hair being gently stroked aside still haunting memories, she extends an invitation for those intrigued by the unexplainable to explore Crystal Cave. Tours take place 5:30 p.m. October 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 & 30. Admission is $20 for adults & $12 for children ages 8 to 11. It is not recommended for kids under 8.
