ovember 11 — a date recognized throughout our nation for memorializing the sacrifices made by not only our military veterans but also their loved ones offers a ton of opportunities to blow off a little steam and enjoy a day together exploring our national parks. This year make it a time to celebrate in Scranton as Steamtown National Historic Site hosts its Entrance Fee Free Day with no cost parking and admission to park grounds, the Visitor Center along with History, Roadhouse and Technology museums. Eager to ride the rails? Absorb the facts of the day then plan to revisit Steamtown for Scranton and Nay Aug Limited Train Rides. Take in the sights and sounds with half-hour to 45-minute treks on the tracks on select Saturday and Sunday dates into December 19. Steamtown National Historic Site is located on South Washington Avenue in Scranton. Its trains, museums and exhibits allow visitors to explore the history, technology and tales of steam railroading in Northeast Pennsylvania. Steamtown National Historic Site Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.nps.gov/stea or call (570) 340-5200.

“This Week In the Poconos is a great resource for us for things that are happening in the Pocono region. We look forward to getting each edition to see what is featured in the magazine each time. Our return travelers ask for it when they come in because it has a great calendar of events and is a good guide for restaurants and shops—there is also some really good coupons in there!” Calling

TWIP the “Go to piece for us when customers ask about the Poconos;” she goes on to say, “Our Welcome Center is on the way to the Poconos for many of our travelers, even if they are on their way to New York City, they want to know what there is to do on the way and they go right through that region so this is the perfect resource for us to give to them.”

rt on the Mountain returns to Shawnee Mountain Ski Area introducing viewers to exquisite exhibits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. November 14 and 15. The popular show and sale is set to fill two floors of the Hope Lodge with a feast for the eyes in a multi-medium assortment of photography, wood carvings, pottery, paintings and more. Since its start with 25 artists five years ago, Art on the Mountain has grown with this year’s numbers topping over 70! Enjoy light refreshments in the EZ Bumps bar along with musical entertainment for an outstanding afternoon. Organizer and internationally recognized photojournalist, aerial photographer and landscape artist Joyce Bambach, whose work is also in Shawnee Mountain Resort and the Village at Camelback, describes the inspiration for inviting the select group of talent to join the event. “Quality of art and compatibility at the show,” are two standards she looks for during her year long process of “Getting it all together;” key ingredients in her recipe for success. Recognizing the group’s consideration and respect for one another, she recalls the teamwork past and present artists have contributed beyond their unique artwork. Aiding one another in display setup and takedown affords everyone the opportunity to join the show she says illustrates the essence of the Art on the Mountain community. Free admission. Free parking. Snow S

ensational slopes take some serious polar-knowhow. Shawnee Mountain Ski Area, positioned at the pinnacle of perfection, has agreed to illustrate how enhanced leads to advanced for its ski and snowboarding facilities in the coming winter snow sports season.

Making Forecasting “dependable snow conditions” in their formula for fun; this family and beginner-friendly ski resort, recently detailed their ongoing multi-million dollar snowmaking improvements including SMI Super PoleCat tower mounted snow machines on Lower Tomahawk. Electrically powered, the SMI Super PoleCat is a high performance, big throw snow machine that is energy efficient and fully automated. Mounted on towers high along the edge of the trail, the radio controlled and oscillating Super PoleCats are expected to quickly and efficiently cover and keep covered, Tomahawk’s steep headwall with a dependable deep base of machine made snow propelling them into the 2015-16 season. Maintaining Modernization kicks off the mix with a new grooming machine the Pisten Bully 400 Free Groomer. In season, a total of 125 skiable acres are groomed nightly on Shawnee Mountain along the 3000’ Bushkill Terrain Park and the Pocono Plunge Snow Tubing Park. Mastering New equipment including 300 Elan Exar E-rise skis and 300 Flow and Rossignal Snowboards join an already impressive collection of trusted equipment in Shawnee’s Rental Shop. Now one of the largest rental shops in the country with an efficient racking system they’re able to outfit more than 4,000 skiers and riders! Mobilizing With Shawnee Mountain Ski Area’s repaved entrance road and widened parking lot entrance and exit loop, you’ll be mobile in no time. Unloading of passengers and equipment easier and safer by two—a two lane drop off zone that is. Impressed by the Play? Why not stay and get paid with Shawnee Mountain’s Winter Job Fair set for November 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hope Lodge. Take a Hike M

iles of trails wind past waterfalls, through dense forests, around glacial lakes and up steep slopes; the Pocono Mountains takes hiking to magnificent scenic heights perfect for all levels. Some may enjoy a leisurely stroll through Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area close to Shawnee on Delaware or along the floating boardwalks to explore the wetlands of Tannersville Cranberry Bog; while others crave the challenge of Big Pocono State Park, with over 1,300 acres of rugged terrain on the summit and slopes of Camelback Mountain. There’s an ideal trek for all to tackle this fall. Did somebody say fall? Autumn equals awesome at Bushkill Falls—one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful and dramatic natural sights makes a delightful daytrip. Two streams flowing down the mountainside feed eight waterfalls cascading over the primeval rocks and slate walls that form the uplands of the Pocono Mountains. Trails and bridges wind through the area offering incredible views. Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area with nearly 130 acres of protected land also features waterfalls creating deep pools bordered by rock strewn banks. A walk along the creek trail leads you to a lookout for an outstanding view of the falls.

The wonders of nature await... Checkout This Week’s map pages on 16 & 17 highlighting these hiking hotspots Visit ThisWeek.net for links to detailed directions and— Go take a hike!
