Time doesn’t stand still—nor should you! We’ve dug up TWIP evidence of names you’re sure to recognize illuminating their same brilliance in days gone by. From Camelback’s debut to its modern day expansion. Memorytown USA staked their claim as the “The Place Where Things Today Are As They Used To Be” in 1963, setting sights on modern day memories. Enjoy this tidbit with plans for pieces on the past in the future!

T

his Week in the Poconos magazine has been in continuous publication since 1932. Under the direction of the Miller family, the magazine has shown Pocono locals and visitors alike, Where to Go, What to Do and What to See for over 83 years.

Let’s take a trip with TWIP through Time as we revisit the images and destinations that have made the Pocono Mountains the top destination it is today starting with our November 1963 issue.

This Week in the Poconos

It was 50 years ago the name Camelback made its debut on page 12 of TWIP’s See and Ski segment boasting a “680-foot drop to the Alpine style base lodge.” Managing Director of the time, Walter Foeger, designed the trails “using an aerial topographical map and walking every inch of the slope with a 100foot tape measure.” Gaze further between the pages and there’s a glimpse of Pocono Manor Inn offering “A Winter-Ful of Fun at The Manor” with an indoor Terrace pool and game rooms. Memorytown, U.S.A. graces the inside front and inside back covers suggesting readers “Make Yours a Holiday Unique” with “The Place where things today ARE as they Used to Be..” as their motto. The ads invite guests in for a “Special holiday spot for NOW or for the FUTURE” as This Week in the Poconos echoes the destinations sentiment inviting readers to tour Pocono staples that have stood the test of time.

Watch for future issues where we’ll capture a bit of the nostalgia from days gone by... This Week in the Poconos

Fueling Travelers “This Week In the Poconos is a great resource for us for things that are happening in the Pocono region. We look forward to getting each edition to see what is featured in the magazine each time. Our return travelers ask for it when they come in because it has a great calendar of events and is a good guide for restaurants and

shops—there is also some really good coupons in there!” Calling TWIP the “Go to piece for us when customers ask about the Poconos;” she goes on to say, “Our Welcome Center is on the way to the Poconos for many

of our travelers, even if they are on their way to New York City, they want to know what there is to do on the way and they go right through that region so this is the perfect resource for us to give to them.”

- Lura Colinet | Welcome Center Supervisor

This Week’s tip comes from one of this year’s Holiday Arts Festival’s talented exhibitors, Kathy Jeffers of Kathy Jeffers Studio in Woodbourne, New York.

Did you know... High-fired stoneware pottery starts as a pale gray or pink in the initial phase of glaze; turning a brilliantly bright or deep dark blue when finished in temperatures reaching over 2300 degrees!

Art on the Mountain Returns! A

long process of “getting it all together;” an ingredient in her recipe for success. Recognizing the group’s consideration and respect for one another, she recalls the teamwork past and present artists have contributed beyond

their unique artwork. Aiding one another in display setup and takedown affording everyone the ability to join the show she noted illustrates the essence of the Art on the Mountain community.

Since its start with 25 artists four years ago, the popular event has grown into this year’s numbers topping over 65. Entertainment from the School for Visual and Performing Arts, Gigi Dance and Wild West City Can Can Girls are lined up and ready to kick up the excitement. Organizer and internationally recognized photojournalist, aerial photographer and landscape artist Joyce Bambach, whose work is also in Shawnee Mountain Resort and the Village at Camelback, describes the inspiration for inviting the select group of talent to join AM. “Quality of art and compatibility at the show,” are two standards she seeks during her year

PEAK A

recent glimpse into the 533,000 square foot, $163 million Camelback Lodge & Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark peaked the curiosity of guests eager for a peek into Camelback’s future. With sights set on a March 2015 opening, current owners Arthur Berry III and Ken Ellis captivated their audience with a presentation on the evolution of the Tannersville site. Skiers tackling 1963’s snow covered slopes kicked off the slideshow; with images of the first Alpine Slide in 1977, then satisfying minds as to the legacy of remnants remaining slopeside after each year’s spring thaw. Berry even

“One of the top four season destinations in the country”

announced plans to revisit Alpine Slide fun in the coming years. Camelbeach’s debut in 1998 and expansion was met with applause; as was the image of 2009’s CBK Adventures. Then, the unspoken question of after 50 years delivering some of the area’s top outdoor entertainment what could possibly come next was answered... You bring the excitement indoors!

Calling Camelback already, “One of the top four season destinations in the country,” the group proceeded to tell of the destination’s latest concept with visuals. Building on each area of the resort as a catalyst igniting the imaginations of all a mascot known as Sir Kartrite’s journey to distant lands will lend the ideal backdrop. CL’s 170,000 square foot adventure center including Aquatopia, what the group considers their “star attraction,” took center stage. Seven pools and 13 waterslides proved just the tip of the iceberg, with attractions including Storm Chaser and Venus Slyde Trap sending harmless dares across tables of Hard Hat Tour guests. A walk through Camelback Lodge & Aquatopia’s unique design and expansive amenities followed unveiling accommodations with beautiful scenery inside and out overlooking the slopes. Many admittedly left the site in awe as they wondered “What could they possibly think of next!”
