This Week in the Poconos
Quiet Valley SUMMER D
edicating days to share various ways farm life was nearly two centuries ago, Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm’s Summer Highlights series continues to educate and entertain. Introducing July’s dates and why starts by announcing the hills (and valley) will be alive with the sound of music 10am to 5pm on Saturday, July 17th as the 15th Annual Music in the Valley returns with a variety of musicians performing throughout the historical farm. Many of the tunes will be reminiscent of the music settlers played in the 19th century. As a grand finale, the day will end with a jam session at 3:30pm. Puppeteer Bonnie Scott will hold shows throughout the day and both young & old may have fun with the puppets’ antics. There will be an opportunity for children to play old-fashioned games and make some crafts. The One Room School will be open and the outdoor Bake Oven will be in operation. Blending more days throughout the summer weeks with ideas teaching how items like flax, reeds and pottery played an important role in everyday life on the farm; Quiet Valley continues offering unique opportunities. Highlights run approximately 10am to 3:30pm and are included in the price of admission with adults $12 and $6 for kids ages 3-12. For a list of all things to come, visit quietvalley.org/calendar-events/summer-highlights and keep the dates below for just a few of the highlights:

he Wayne County Creative Arts Council is pleased to announce their summer schedule of concerts in Honesdale’s Central Park. This 53rd annual event offers up a new and June featuring 22 different lineup of performers over seven weeks of biweekly outdoor concerts, something for nearly every musical taste. Check out the tunes of a band from the Nashville area, the WCCAC debut of a contemporary blues legend, unique high-energy jazz, and of course, your favorites from past summers. Tubby’s Food Truck will be on hand, with many treats to enjoy while listening to the concert. Concerts take place select Mondays and Thursdays June beginning at 7:30PM, through July 29th. Come as you are – bring a blanket or 29 chair – and prepare to relax and enjoy some great entertainment this summer! “Having a year off has made us much more appreciative of live music,” said local musician, teacher, and music store owner Dave Figura, who books the acts and runs the sound board during performances. “We’re very excited about the new groups, and can’t wait to see everyone at the park again!” Local homegrown (and still growing!) family band, The Pharm, will be onstage on Thursday, July 8th, sharing gorgeous harmonies and classic folk, rock and country songs. July 12th will bring a very special concert featuring a nationally-known act coming all the way from Nashville, TN. The Farm Hands, a multi-awardwinning gospel bluegrass band, are led by world-class dobro player Tim Graves. On Thursday, July 15th, perennial favorites The Irish Balladeers will return to share their special mix of Irish songs and stories of Irish and IrishAmerican history. Monday, July 19th will feature extraordinary vocalist Ekat Pereyra and Friends, and Thursday, July 22 will bring back the stupendous high-energy
Bill Ar Ban
musicianship of the Gypsy Jazz Quintet. In another major WCCAC debut, contemporary blues legend Clarence Spady will bring his unique style to the Fasshauer Stage on Monday, July 26th. The season ends on a high note on Thursday, July 29th, with a performance by The Old Time Fiddlers, led by Steve Jacobi. This can’t-miss concert is always a highlight of the season! Mitzi Kielar, Project Manager for the WCCAC, is excited about the coming season. “I’m so

Things to Do in the Poconos P
lanning a trip on a budget? There are lots of free things to do and see in the Pocono Mountains. From exploring our beautiful downtowns to experiencing the great outdoors, add these free activities to your summer must-do list.
1
Take a Downtown Stroll Whether you’re just passing through for an afternoon or staying nearby, our region’s charming small towns are well worth the visit. Admire the historic architecture and discover photo-ops and quainteateries and shops in Jim Thorpe, Stroudsburg, Milford, Honesdale and Hawley. Don’t forget to check out seasonal festivals and events that offer free fun and entertainment.
2
Visit a National Landmark Located along the Upper Delaware River, the Roebling Aqueduct Bridge is the oldest existing wire suspension bridge and is designated as both a National Historic Landmark and a National Civil Engineering Landmark. Dive into the ancient past with a visit to Boulder Field at Hickory Run State Park. This National Natural Land-

3
BYOB (Bring Your Own Bike) Bring your own set of wheels and fly through lush, historic biking paths in the Pocono Mountains. The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, Switchback Railroad Trail and McDade Recreational Trial are some of the most notable trails, tracing the routes of old railroads. Cycle along the river or past idyllic forests and fields, the perfect way to soak in the scenery.
4
Watch for Wildlife Meet the “locals” during your time in the Poconos: catch a glimpse of our indigenous wildlife. The Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary has miles of nature trails winding through diverse habitats, an ideal home for birds and animals. Don’t forget your binoculars!
5
MEET LOCAL FARMERS As you drive through the Poconos, you’ll pass many pastoral fields belonging to local farms. Why not make a stop to see their produce and learn more about their work? The Cooperage Project
VISIT A NATIONAL LANDMARK

is hosting “At the Farm” events this summer, allowing visitors to tour local agricultural facilities and greenhouses to discover firsthand where the fresh food comes from! For an even wider array of locally-grown products, head to the Monroe Farmer’s Market to browse the colorful stalls that fill Stroudsburg’s Courthouse Square every Saturday, May through October.
6
Plan a Picnic and Hike Open sunrise to sunset, our national, state and local parks are accessible year-round. Pack some snacks or a picnic lunch and head to Lehigh Gorge State Park, Prompton State Park, Promised Land State Park or Tobyhanna State Park. Enjoy your meal al fresco against the rolling hills and pristine lakes. Remember to take any trash with you and leave no trace. Don’t forget to refuel while visiting. Local restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating as well as takeout and delivery. From campsites to hotels, check out places to stay for every price point and plan an overnight visit so you can experience as much as possible.
