Leprechauns leap for music Event includes seven days of bands of all stripes by Tad Johnson Sun Thisweek

There will be more music than ever during this year’s Rosemount Leprechaun Days, which runs from July 20-29. The annual summer festival in Rosemount has added: • two professional bands to its slate of musical entertainment during the MidSummer Faire, which runs from Thursday to Saturday of the event’s second weekend at Central Park, 2893 145th St. W., • the Rosemount Community Band will play another night and • there will be more musicians than ever during the Bluegrass Americana Festival from July 20-22. In all there will be seven days and nights of free music at the Central Park Amphitheater. This year’s Mid-Summer Faire will feature four bands: • Thursday, July 26 – Big Bob and The High Rollers 6-10 p.m. • Friday, July 27 – Critical Mass 6:30-7:30 p.m. and GB Leighton 7:50-11 p.m. • Saturday, July 28 – Pop Rocks 7-11 p.m. with fireworks starting at 10 p.m. In past years, the lineup has included only two acts, but Rosemount resident Steve Ball is using some of the connections he has

developed in the past 10 years of organizing Leprechaun Days entertainment to add some new twists. Big Bob and the High Rollers, which includes former Eagan High School football coach Dave Fritze as its band leader, floats through musical genres as easily as a butterfly as it churns out covers from the likes of Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, the B-52s and ZZ Top. It packs a bee sting with its mix of horns, guitar and both male and female vocal turns. In past years, the Thursday-night music has been provided by amateurs but not this year. Big Bob has been cranking out gigs for many years, and the group also understands the crowd that is typically drawn to Thursday’s Family Fun Night, mostly young people and their parents. This is the first year that Ball has contracted to have the same sound and lighting set for all three days of music. With Twin Cities-based Hairball Productions bringing its rigging and equipment to Central Park, it has allowed for two bands to perform with little time lag on Friday night. Critical Mass, which includes Rosemount resident Steve Daly on guitar, will rock to the beat of such artists as AC/DC, the Black

Crowes, and Los Lonely Boys. The group will be the opening act for G.B. Leighton, a tireless Twin Cities club performer, who has a loyal following with such original hits as “County Road,” “Pickle Park” and “Acapulco Night” along with covers of artists like Van Morrison and the Bo Deans. Leighton has played during Leprechaun Days in previous years with longtime Rosemount resident Jason Perri on violin. Pop Rocks, which played during Leprechaun Days last year, will move to the Saturday night slot with its high energy, costume optional show. The cover band ranges all over the musical map with its set list. Songs genres include rap, rock, funk, pop and heavy metal. The tip of their tuneful iceberg includes songs from Poison, Nirvana, the Village People and much more. There will be wardrobe changes to match the genre-hopping. “I had a lot of people who came up to me who said they had never heard of Pop Rocks before last year’s show, but when they were done they said they were really good,” Ball said. Celts Bar & Grill of Rosemount will again be providing the beer garden, which will be open each of the three nights. Ball said the committee and Celts has worked in past years to bring more of the music sound to the beer garden. One aspect of Leprechaun Days is that all the music is free as there’s no need for an ID or cover charge to see the bands. “It is enjoyable to see all the thousands of people who come out,” Ball said. “It is lots of fun. Unlike other towns that do a cover charge to see the bands, this is totally free. That’s a part of why I keep doing this.”

The 75-member band consists of a wide range of ages from recent college graduates to retired folks. They are lawyers, nurses and plumbers. Not all of them are from Rosemount. Some hail from Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville, Eagan and Farmington. Some of them haven’t played for 20 years, according to Zschunke. The intergenerational and geographical mix of players has created a vibrant atmosphere because “they have such a commonality in their joy of playing music,” Zschunke said.

Bluegrass All that music is in addition to the Rosemount Area Arts Council’s Bluegrass Americana Music Weekend, which starts with a July 20 square dance and music by the Eelpout Stringers from 7-9 p.m. at Central Park. The band includes Rosemount resident Craig Evans on banjo. Evans has been the prime mover for the bluegrass festival since its inception. The big day will be Saturday, July 21, with a lineup at the Bluegrass Festival that includes: • Dakota Citizens (kid-friendly bluegrass) 3-4 p.m. • Singleton Street 5-6 p.m., which also includes Evans, • Roe Family Singers 6-7 p.m. • Switched At Birth 7-8 p.m. • Sawtooth Bluegrass Band 8-9 p.m., which includes the Birtzer brothers from Rosemount. The day also includes the Country Market and Juried Craft Show from 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; a farmers market, children’s entertainment, kiddie parade and food from Famous Dave’s Barbecue. On Sunday, July 22, Roots Music will take to the stage in Central Park from 4-9 p.m. The lineup includes the Moses Oakland Band, The Golden Swans, The Four Seasons, Serendipity, and Break Even.
