New or visiting town

If I had visitors who were coming to Apple Valley for one day or if I were introducing newcomers to the city, here’s where I would take them. Apple Valley is a significant regional destination. Dakota County residents were polled recently asking them what their favorite recreational activity is. The answer: Going to zoos. With the Minnesota Zoo in their backyard, local residents know the treasure they have close to home. A visit to the Minnesota Zoo is a must for visitors. The zoo maintains a spectacular facility, which recently earned a major upgrade with the addition of Russia’s Grizzly Coast exhibit. Aside from the zoo, Apple Valley is a shopping and restaurant magnet for the area. A major concentration of shops and eateries is at the junction of County Road 42 and Highway 77/Cedar Avenue. There one can find pretty much anything to buy from both independent retailers and big-box stores. The culinary delights range from fast food to some of

the most elegant sit-down restaurants in the area. Though it’s fairly small, Apple Valley packs a park punch with access to Lebanon Hills Regional Park run by Dakota County and the Johnny Cake Ridge Park operated jointly by the city of Apple Valley and School District 196. People can hike, walk, bike, ski, canoe, camp, play ball and much more at both sites. In the summer there’s the newly upgraded Apple Valley Aquatic Center and golf courses to explore, while the city-owned Valleywood Golf Course turns into a mecca for cross country skiers. Established residents

For those who have lived in Apple Valley for a long time, I’d encourage them to break out of their routines by checking out: • Some of the smaller, independently owned restaurants and shops. There are several waiting to be tried along County Road 42. • Disc golf is a popular sport in the summer at Alimagnet Park. For more

information, go online at www.ci.applevalley.mn.us. • Get a Minnesota Zoo membership. The membership rates are so cheap that going just a couple times a year will have it pay for itself. • If you haven’t been out for the evening at one of the bars or clubs in Apple Valley, then be prepared to party. Bars and clubs host bands, karaoke and other fun and games every night of the week. If I had visitors who were coming to Rosemount for one day or if I were introducing newcomers to the city, here’s where I would take them: A walk through Carroll’s Woods near

Rosemount High School, through Erickson and Central parks and then a stroll down Rosemount’s main drag to see the new library, a clip at my favorite barber shop, wander into the unique shops, and lunch at one of the restaurants. For a nightcap, downtown Rosemount is typically abuzz with activity at its bars with live music, karaoke, drink specials and pull tabs nearly every night.

Established residents

For those who have lived in Rosemount for a long time, I’d encourage them to break out of their routines by checking out: • Dakota Woods Dog Park, 16470 Blaine Ave., which is actually in Coates and run by Dakota County. • The six-acre Master Gardener Education & Research Display Garden, 1605 160th St./County Road 46, which is periodically open for public events. More information is at www.mggarden.umn. edu. • Bike from Rosemount to Hastings and back again on county roads 42 and 46. It’s a scenic stretch of road that has an ample shoulder to ride on without hitting the brakes too often. • Participate! May Taste of Lakeville — The Taste of Lakeville is the Rotary Club’s major fund raising event

for local and international community projects. Annually, the Taste is held at the Lakeville Arts Center, located at 20965 Holyoke Ave., in mid-May. Event-goers get to taste all the food and wine the want, while live music plays in the background. Live and silent auctions are also held. More than 2,000 guests generated more than $75,000 that was used to help families, locally and worldwide, in additiontofundingscholarships for Lakeville Students, among other things. July Lakeville’s Pan-O-Prog — Lakeville’s annual summer festival, Pan-O-Prog, has come to Lakeville the week of the Fourth of July for 42 years. In 2010 it is July 4-10. The annual event is a week long celebration that features more than 50 celebrations, events and activities during the week of July 4. Events include the grand parade, classic car parade, fireworks, street dances and more. There is something for all age groups and food for all tastes. For more information, visit www.panoprog.org. Eagan July 4th Funfest – Eagan’s July 4th Funfest celebration typically runs July 3-4 and features the Miss Eagan Ambassador pageant, a carnival filled with rides and games, live entertainment, the Fourth of July Parade, and one of the largest fireworks displays in the state. The carnival and fireworks are held at Central Park; the parade begins at the intersection of Yankee Doodle and Blue Cross roads and travels east on Yankee Doodle to the Eagan Community Center. — Over a five-day stretch, Fire Muster features wine tasting, beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, children’s activities, emergency personnel demonstrations, food and beverages from local restaurants, a community parade, and, of course, the fire truck parade that started it all. Burnsville’s annual community celebration began officially in 1980, evolving from a smaller, neighborhoodbased activity. During the late 1970s, Burnsville resident and fire equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends entertained children each summer by displaying his collection at what was then known as Diamondhead Mall, capping the day with a short parade of equipment down Nicollet Avenue. The Fire Muster, which is held after Labor Day, celebrated its 30 anniversary in 2009.

Lakeville Art Festival — The Lakeville Art Festival is held the third weekend in September in downtown Lakeville on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center, located at 20965 Holyoke Ave. Each year, the festival hosts approximately 60 exhibitors who show and sell their work in many forms and mediums including visual, performing, and literary forms. Golf Courses DAKOTA COUNTY

There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer ninehole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a nine-hole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an additional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are, Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge

18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered throughout the course, such as the pond-protected par-3 and a hole with a postage stampshaped green. Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area. Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville features stately pines, pristine wetlands and is accentuated with seven ponds, which create challenging water hazards. This 18-hole, par-71 course has three sets of tees ranging from 4,805 to 6,306 in yardage and offers gently rolling hills and natural reclaimed Minnesota wetlands to challenge all levels of golfers. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The course features gentle Heritage Links Golf Course in Lakeville offers a challenge to hills and a wide variety of trees, golfers with rolling terrain, water and sand hazards.
