Burnsville Burnsville Performing Arts Center — Located at 12600 Nicollet Ave. in the Heart of the City, the center opened in January 2009 and has a 1,000-seat proscenium stage theater and an intimate, 150-seat black box theater. The center also has a 2,000-square-foot art gallery, meeting rooms and a large rehearsal room. There is additional space for banquets, special events and receptions. Presentations at the Burnsville PAC range from classical music to comedy, from jazz to Christian rock, from country to rock and roll. Dakota Woods Dog Park – A 16-acre, fenced, wooded park for dogs to run and exercise off leash. A pass ($42.85 annually, $5 daily paid at park) is required to use the dog park. May Ironman Bike Ride — Held annually in Lakeville, the 2011 ride will be held on Sunday, May 1. The Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride was established in 1967 and is the longest running century bike ride in Minnesota. With routes of 100, 65 and 30 miles, this single day bike tour has something for every cyclist and marks the unofficial start of the cycling season in the state. September Burnsville Fire Muster — Over a five-day stretch, Fire Muster features wine tasting, beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, children’s activities, emergency personnel demonstrations, food and beverages from local restaurants, a community parade, and, of course, the fire truck parade that started it all. Burnsville’s annual community celebration began officially in 1980, evolving from a smaller, neighborhoodbased activity. During the late 1970s, Burnsville resident and fire equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends entertained children each summer by displaying his collection at what was then known as Diamondhead Page 18

The city of Apple Valley has 50 parks ranging from neighborhood parks with playground equipment to the 25acre complex at Hayes Field and Community Center that features baseball fields and a sports arena. Golf Courses Dakota County There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. On those pleasant spring, summer and fall days, one can find plenty of activity at area golf courses. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a nine-hole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an additional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Another short course is Cleary Lake Golf Course, part of the 1,045-acre Cleary Lake Regional Park, southwest of Burnsville in Scott County. It has a par-3 length, 9-hole golf course and driving range. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as

offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. A creek that bisects the course comes into play on many of the holes. The terrain undulates, with the back portion of the course mostly on a raised section that makes for some blind shots. Valleywood is a champion-

Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully-public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections.
