Editor’s Picks BURNSVILLE EAGAN

Burnsville offers many shopping options, much more by Tad Johnson THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS MANAGING EDITOR

Burnsville has long been the epicenter of activity in the south metro. Despite not having the distinction of being the county seat, the city has one of the highest concentrations of retail commerce in the state. Some say it all starts with Burnsville Center at the crossroads of County Road 42 and the Interstate 35 split. One of the state’s first and Dakota County’s only megamall, Burnsville Center has pretty much anything a shopper might desire, plus it is becoming an even more child-friendly place with new open spaces for families to relax. Burnsville is a magnet for tourists because of its dearth of hotel rooms that are plentiful on the Interstate 35 corridor. Much like its neighbor Eagan, people see a hotel stay in Burnsville as an easy way to access Minneapolis and St. Paul, but there are plenty of reasons to tour Burnsville, too. The new Burnsville Performing Arts

Center hosts musical, theatrical and comedic events year-round in addition to having an art gallery. For entertainment of a more twodimensional variety, the Atlantis movie theater at the mall offers a posh film-watching experience. In addition to having a major retail hub, Burnsville has a restaurant to fill just about every variation of world cuisine. Exploring the area around the mall is essential, but Burnsville’s Heart of the City offers a different pace year round. In the summer, Nicollet Commons Park is abuzz with activity, while in the winter, the downtown area is tastefully decorated for the season for its quiet coffee shops, fine restaurants and unique niche retailers. Those who live in Burnsville know all of these amenities are at their doorstep, but there is still plenty of exploring left to do in their hometown. For a weekend getaway in one’s backyard,

local residents can choose from one of the many hotels to plan their escape. The city of Burnsville hosts a wide range of events throughout the year to keep their residents busy. There’s the Burnsville Fire Muster, Wednesdays in the Park-Civic Center Concert Series and events at the nationally recognized teen center THE GARAGE. Burnsville also has a thriving nightlife scene with clubs that host live music, ranging from jazz to rock. For more information on weekly listings, check out Thisweek Newspapers’ arts and entertainment section called Thisweekend.

Eagan has it all for fun-seeking visitors, locals by Tad Johnson THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS MANAGING EDITOR

For many people, the great thing about visiting Eagan is its convenient access to the Twin Cities. But I would argue that the best thing about being in Eagan is having all of the amenities one would want to turn a trip into an adventure right there in Eagan. Eagan is home to arguably the region’s best parks – Dakota County’s Lebanon Hills

Page 4

Burnsville / Eagan

Regional Park – which is heaven on Earth for recreation seekers year round. The city has one of the most vibrant shopping centers around with a bevy of retailers, restaurants and much more in the area surrounding the junction of Interstate 35E, Yankee Doodle Road and Pilot Knob Road. But the shopping and dining opportunities aren’t limited to there. Further exploration can take you to retail hubs throughout the city. In the warmer months, a visit to Eagan’s Cascade Bay and Caponi Art Park are required experiences. Cascade Bay has enough attractions at its water park to fill an entire day, while Caponi Art Park is a visual wonder with sculpture that blends with its wooded surroundings and frequent musical and theatrical events. Of course, the city also hosts some of the region’s best-attended festivals, including the Fourth of

July Funfest, Eagan Marketfest (held over several Wednesdays in the summer) and the Eagan Art Festival. Because of all of this, Eagan residents know this is a great place to live. Still there might be some places even local residents haven’t explored yet. Longtime residents should make it a priority to check out the city’s Parks and Recreation offerings, especially those programs offered at the stunning Eagan Community Center. The center has something for both young and old alike, such as a fitness center, gymnasiums and senior center. To experience a mini-vacation close to home, Eagan has a wealth of hotels within shouting distance of most neighborhoods. Check out the Community Guide’s listing of hotels to scope out your options. For more information about all the previously mentioned attractions and events, check out those listings in the Community Guide.

Park amenities include hiking trails, athletic fields, pavilions and shelters, tennis courts, playgrounds, prairies, ponds, woodlands and open space. During the winter, general skating and hockey rinks are developed and maintained at sites throughout the city. Parks such as Blackhawk Park, 1629 Murphy Parkway, and Trapp Farm Park, 841 Wilderness Run Road, offer canoe launches and fishing

docks. Trapp Farm Park also offers a snow tubing hill in the winter. Eagan’s Central Park surrounds the Community Center and is the site of several city festivals, including the Eagan Art Festival and July 4th Funfest. The park features a gazebo, pavilion, playground, and bandshell used for summer concerts and performances. Walnut Hill Park, 999 Wilderness Run Road, offers an archery range, while the Lexington-Diffley Athletic Fields, 4201 Lexington Ave., offer a seasonal BMX bike track and a seasonal skate park. Eagan’s many parks provide opportunities for casual users, reserved group functions, scheduled athletic leagues, and other programs while also preserving areas of undeveloped land with many unique natural features. A comprehensive guide to city parks and their amenities called “Park Finder” can be found on the city’s Website at www.cityofeagan.com under Parks and Recreation.

Golf Courses DAKOTA COUNTY

There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a ninehole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an additional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are, Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Valleywood is a championship 18-hole course with ponds, doglegs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good management, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered throughout the course, such as the pond-protected par-3 and a hole with a postage stamp-shaped green. Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area. Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville features stately pines, pristine wetlands and is accentuated with seven ponds, which create challenging water hazards. This 18-hole, par-71 course has three sets of tees ranging from 4,805 to 6,306 in yardage and offers gently rolling hills and natural reclaimed Minnesota wetlands to challenge all levels of golfers. Legends Club in Prior Lake features a 30-acre lake, cascading

This 18hole championship course provides enjoyment for golfers of all abilities with five sets of tee markers. Heritage Links Golf Club in Lakeville is an 18-hole, par71 championship golf course.
