Burnsville epicenter of regional activity Burnsville has long been the epicenter of activity in the south metro. Despite not having the distinction of being the county seat, the city has one of the highest concentrations of retail commerce in the state. Some say it all starts with Burnsville Center at the crossroads of County Road 42 and the Interstate 35 split. One of the state’s first and Dakota County’s only regional shopping mall, Burnsville Center has pretty much anything a shopper might desire, plus it is becoming an even more childfriendly place with new open spaces for families to relax. Burnsville is a magnet for tourists because of its abundance of hotel rooms along the Interstate-35W corridor. Much like its neighbor Eagan, people see a hotel stay in Burnsville as an easy way to access Minneapolis and St. Paul, but there are plenty of reasons to tour Burnsville, too.

The Burnsville Performing Arts Center opened in January 2009 in Burnsville’s Heart of the City. The new Burnsville Performing Arts Center hosts musical, theatrical and comedic events year-round in addition to having an art gallery. For entertainment of a more two-dimensional variety, the Atlantis movie theater near Burnsville Center offers a posh film-watching experience. In addition to having a major retail hub, Burnsville has a
restaurant to fill just about every variation of world cuisine. Exploring the area around the mall is essential, but Burnsville’s Heart of the City offers a different pace year round. In the summer, Nicollet Commons Park is abuzz with activity, while in the winter, the downtown area is tastefully decorated for the season for its quiet coffee shops, fine
restaurants and unique niche retailers. Those who live in Burnsville know all of these amenities are at their doorstep, but there is still plenty of exploring left to do in their hometown. For a weekend getaway in one’s backyard, local residents can chose from one of the many hotels to plan their escape. The city of Burnsville hosts a wide range of events throughout the year to keep their residents busy. There’s the Burnsville Fire Muster, Wednesdays in the Park-Civic Center Concert Series and events at the nationally recognized teen center THE GARAGE. Burnsville also has a thriving nightlife scene with clubs that host live music, ranging from jazz to rock. For more information on weekly listings, check out Thisweek Newspapers’ arts and entertainment section called Thisweekend.
Eagan’s great location, amenities offer something for everyone One of Eagan’s greatest assets is its convenient access to the Twin Cities. But the best thing about Eagan is that it has all of the amenities one would want to turn a trip into an adventure right in its own backyard. Eagan is home to arguably the region’s best parks – Dakota County’s Lebanon Hills Regional Park – which is paradise for recreation seekers year round. The city has one of the Page 4

most vibrant shopping centers around with a bevy of retailers, restaurants and much more in the area surrounding the junction of I-35E, Yankee Doodle Road and Pilot Knob Road. But the shopping and dining opportunities aren’t limited to that area alone. Further exploration can take you to retail hubs throughout the city. In the warmer months, See Eagan, Page 5

Eagan/From Page 4 a visit to Eagan’s Cascade Bay and Caponi Art Park are required experiences. Cascade Bay has enough attractions at its water park to fill an entire day, while Caponi Art Park is a visual wonder with sculpture that blends with its wooded surroundings and frequent musical and theatrical events. The city also hosts some of the region’s best-attended festivals, including the Fourth of July Funfest, Eagan Marketfest (held over several Wednesdays in the summer) and the Eagan Art Festival. The stunning Eagan Community Center has some-
thing for everyone, including a fitness center, gymnasiums, a children’s play area and a senior center. The adjacent Central Park is home to a bandshell and hosts several festivals and events throughout the year. Eagan’s numerous parks, recreational opportunities, schools, vibrant business community and thriving retail areas make it a truly great place to live. For more information about all of these attractions and events, check out the listings in the Community Guide.

Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Valleywood is a championship 18-hole course with ponds, doglegs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good management, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully-public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship

n estimated 60% of women and men suffer from vein problems. Varicose veins are large, bulging v ei n s th at ar e of ten v i s i bl e on th e s k i n s u r fac e although the majority are located below the skin surface and only visible with help of an Ultrasound. They are weak or damaged blood vessels that cause poor circulation of blood, causing symptoms in the legs such as aching, burning, cramping, tiredness, restlessness and swelling. Left untreated, they may result in complications such as blood clots, frequent skin infections and poorly healing leg ulcers. “Varicose veins and venous insufficiency are one of the most common conditions that affect adults,” says Dr. Gupta of Vein Clinic PA, 470 W. 78th Street, Suite 250 in Chanhassen, “and yet many patients go undiagnosed or untreated due to misconceptions by the public and even by the medical community.” Dr. Gupta uses Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) in his practice, a cutting edge procedure that utilizes laser technology to treat even the worst veins by sealing them off at their source. Time Magazine recently declared EVLT as “One of the most amazing medical inventions of the year.” The treatment is performed under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office and is virtually painless. There is no scarring, downtime or prolonged recovery period. Dr. Gupta is one of only a few Board Certified Vein Specialists in the nation and his practice is solely devoted to management of vein problems. He has successfully performed over 5000 EVLTs and helped thousands of patients, e v e n t h o s e patients who e x p e r i e n c e d failed treatments such as vein stripping, injection sclerotherapy or radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure), escape the discomfort and embarrassment associated with this all too common problem. He states that the new laser treatment is now the current standard of care and the procedure is covered by almost all insurance companies, including Medicare and MHCP.

Further, he states that fall and winter are the busiest times of the year since many patients have already met their deductibles. Now is the perfect time to get an evaluation and ultrasound, because insurance approval and treatment can still be completed by the end of the year.
