Heart of the City/Nicollet Commons Park — The 54acre Heart of the City is a smart growth-based, mixed-use, pedestrian friendly downtown area for Burnsville. It features a host of retail shops, business and office space, a community arts center, a community park and diverse housing opportunities. Nicollet Commons Park is one of the first “town square”-style parks to be developed in the metro area suburbs and serves as the focal point in the Heart of the City south of the intersection of Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue. The park features spaces for patrons to sit and read a book or have lunch along with an open green area and 250-seat performance amphitheater for concerts and events. No need to worry about getting to the top, Buck Hill Ski Area has a chair lift for a smooth ride. Buck Hill — Located at 15400 Buck Hill Road, just west of I-35W, Buck Hill Ski Area offers skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, as well as summer activities such as bicycle racing. EAGAN Cascade Bay – Cascade Bay is the largest outdoor municipal waterpark in the Upper Midwest and features several attractions, including Twin Falls, the Typhoon and Hurricane waterslides, and the Lazy River with Rocky Rapids. Other amenities include zerodepth entry points, snacks at Captain’s Gallery, and miniature golf. The park is typically open for its regular season June 12-Aug. 30. FARMINGTON Dakota County Fairgrounds – The sprawling acreage of the Dakota County Fairgrounds on Farmington’s southern edge is home to more than just the Dakota County Fair. The grounds has also been the site of annual events like the Scottish Highland Games, the Southern Cruzers Summer Spectacular Car Show and much more. Dakota City Heritage Village – Dakota City Heritage Village offers visitors the chance to experience rural life in 1900-era Dakota County. A recreated historic village and museum, Dakota City’s five-acre site includes 22 buildings. Dakota City offers special events throughout the year with costumed interpreters and demonstrations. The village and museum are open for educational programs, senior groups, celebrations and tours by reservation. ROSEMOUNT Dakota Woods Dog Park – A 16-acre, fenced, wooded park for dogs to run and exercise off leash. A pass ($42.85 annually, $5 daily paid at park) is required to use the dog park. LAKEVILLE Lakeville Area Arts Center – Located at 20965 Holyoke Ave. in downtown Lakeville, the center promotes cultural enrichment and artistic experiences for the entire community by offering many youth and adult art classes as well as a variety of theatrical productions. Through creative re-use and renovation, the former All Saints Church has been transformed into a state-of-the-art theater and arts facility featuring a 300seat auditorium, multi-purpose art studio, pottery studio, exhibit spaces and catering kitchen. Located in a former Catholic Church, the Lakeville Area Arts Center plays host to several community events each year including the Taste of Lakeville.
Dakota County Historical Society – Discover details about local history at the Dakota County Historical Society Research Library and Museum. Featured on display at the museum are over 25,000 objects, including many historical pictures. Permanent exhibits include “Old Town,” which includes a general store, boarding house, kitchen and jail in addition to many other rooms filled with ar-
tifacts and information about Dakota County’s past. The museum also houses the world’s largest map of Dakota County, featuring historic sites like Gopher Ordnance Works, Sibley House and the Miesville Baseball Park. Elko Speedway – A NASCAR-sanctioned racetrack, with a steeply banked paved 3/8-mile oval that allows two and threewide racing. LeDuc Mansion – The LeDuc Mansion in Hastings is the estate of William and Mary LeDuc where people can learn first-hand what it was like to live back in the 1860s. While there, visitors may be able to take in a play or interact with some of the many volunteers who portray some of the more colorful characters of history. During special event weekends, visitors can also mingle with the soldiers at a Civil War encampment, listen to political debates or play old-fashioned games. Ironman Bike Ride — Held annually in Lakeville, the 2012 ride will be held on the first Sunday in May. The Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride was established in 1967 and is the longest running century bike ride in Minnesota. With routes of 100, 65 and 30 miles, this single day bike tour has something for every cyclist and marks the unofficial start of the cycling season in the state. SEPTEMBER Burnsville Fire Muster — Over a five-day stretch, Fire Muster features wine tasting, beer tasting, entertainment, fireworks, carnival rides, children’s activities, emergency personnel demonstrations, food and beverages from local restaurants, a community parade, and, of course, the fire truck parade that started it all. Burnsville’s annual community celebration began officially in 1980, evolving from a smaller, neighborhood-based activity. During the late 1970s, Burnsville resident and fire equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends entertained chil-

OCTOBER Haunted Woods Trail – Held in Rosemount’s Central Park the Saturday prior to Halloween, the Haunted Woods Trail is an all-volunteer event that turns the park into a child-friendly Halloween walk to collect candy from area businesses and community groups. City Parks Burnsville | Eagan BURNSVILLE The Burnsville park system contains approximately 1,800 acres spread throughout 79 parks. Approximately one-third of the parkland is developed for active uses. The other two-thirds are preserved as natural areas, some accessed by trails. Park amenities include natural hiking trails, cross country ski trails, mountain bike trails, tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, in-line skating rinks, two public beaches, a boat launch, recreation buildings, picnic shelters, playground areas, hockey and pleasure rinks, an archery range, a disc golf course and numerous athletic fields. Terrace Oaks West Park, east of County Road 11 and south of Burnsville Parkway, is known for its natural areas and hiking, bik-
ing and ski trails. Unguarded public beaches are at Crystal Beach, located on Lac Lavon Drive (County Road 11) one mile south of County Road 42, and at Lac Lavon Park, at the intersection of Lac Lavon Drive and County Road 46. A boat landing is at Crystal Lake West Park on Maple Island Road, a half mile south of Crystal Lake Road. Nicollet Commons Park, located at 126th Street and Nicollet Avenue, is one of the first “town square�-style parks to be developed in the Twin Cities suburbs and serves as the focal point for the Heart of the City.
EAGAN The city of Eagan has 55 parks offering more than 1,370 acres of “play� space. Parks range from the natural, undeveloped Patrick
Eagan Park at 3995 Lexington Ave. to the Northview Athletic Fields at 980 Northview Park Road with ball fields, soccer field, playground, tennis court and sun shelter. Park amenities include hiking trails, athletic fields, pavilions and shelters, tennis courts, playgrounds, prairies, ponds, woodlands and open space. During the winter, general skating and hockey rinks are developed and maintained at sites throughout the city. Parks such as Blackhawk Park, 1629 Murphy Parkway, and Trapp Farm Park, 841 Wilderness Run Road, offer canoe launches and fishing docks. Trapp Farm Park also offers a snow tubing hill in the winter. Eagan’s Central Park surrounds the Community Center and is the site of several city festivals, includ-
ing the Eagan Art Festival and July 4th Funfest. The park features a gazebo, pavilion, playground, and bandshell used for summer concerts and performances. Walnut Hill Park, 999 Wilderness Run Road, offers an archery range, while the Lexington-Diffley Athletic Fields, 4201 Lexington Ave., offer a seasonal BMX bike track and a seasonal skate park. Eagan’s many parks provide opportunities for casual users, reserved group functions, scheduled athletic leagues, and other programs while also preserving areas of undeveloped land with many unique natural features. LEBANON HILLS REGIONAL PARK Lebanon Hills Regional Park, providing activities for all ages, is the largest park in the Dakota County park system. Containing almost 2,000 acres, the park offers miles of trails and many lakes for year-round outdoor sports, recreation and environmental education. The Lebanon Hills Visitor Center, located in the eastern section of the park at 860 Cliff Road in Eagan, offers park information, interactive nature displays, courses and programs, and access to the park. THOMPSON COUNTY PARK Thompson County Park, 360 Butler Avenue E. in West St Paul, is a charming 57-acre park they provides a quiet get-a-way in the midst of the West St. Paul. The park features a large picnic area that overlooks Thompson Lake and miles of wooded trails that connect to the North Urban Regional Trail – a trail system that links Thompson County Park to Kaposia Park in South St. Paul and to the Mississippi River Regional Trail. The park’s Dakota Lodge, 1200 Stassen Lane in West St. Paul, a four-season event center,

BIG RIVERS REGIONAL TRAIL Big Rivers Regional Trail, a scenic 4 1/2-mile paved trail that overlooks the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, is located along the northern edge of Dakota County from Eagan to Lilydale. The trail also links to the 72mile Mississippi National River and Recreation Area hundreds of miles of trails throughout the greater Twin Cities area historic landmarks including Fort Snelling, Pike Island, and, one of Minnesota’s oldest settlements, the City of Mendota.
MISSISSIPPI RIVER REGIONAL TRAIL The Mississippi River Regional Trail will extend over 27 miles along the Mississippi River - from South St. Paul to Hastings - providing scenic views of the river and connections to local parks and trails. The first phase of construction will extend from the existing South St. Paul Riverfront Trail into northern Inver Grove Heights with expected completion in 2014.
NORTH URBAN REGIONAL TRAIL The North Urban Regional Trail is an east-west corridor that connects Lilydale, Mendota Heights, West St. Paul, and South St. Paul. The trail is in place between Robert Street and the Mississippi River in South St. Paul. Future construction projects will link Valley Park in Mendota Heights to the area near Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul.
