Farmington Dew Days begins next week Donnelly leading many in planning efforts by Laura Adelmann THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

For Darla Donnelly, Farmington’s Dew Days festival is a tradition she’s eager to pass on to a new generation. “It was our summer festival. That was what we looked forward to coming up right after school got out, said Donnelly, who grew up in Farmington and is now chair of the June 1518 celebration. Planning for Dew Days, led by Donnelly with a team of about 20 volunteers, has been going on for months. Organizers styled the event as a throwback to the traditions of the celebration, holding many of the family-friendly events in downtown Farmington as has been done in the past. For the celebration, Oak and Third streets will be

closed from Friday at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday from Anchor Bank to the Farmington Bakery and from Subway to City Hall. Downtown businesses are sponsoring a wide variety of fun events, contests and games, many that reflect their businesses. For example, Gerster Jewelry is sponsoring a ring toss, Farmington Bakery is holding a pie-eating contest, Fan Club Athletics is running a slap shot event, and the Olympus Health Club is featuring hula hoop and jump rope contests. A fishing tournament will be held at Prairie View Park, and model trains will be on display in the Senior Center. The Big Wheel race is Friday, June 17. Local businesses chipped in to purchase some extra

Big Wheels so that children who don’t have one of the plastic trikes with the trademark huge front plastic tire can participate in the race. A kiddie carnival will be held at the CVS Pharmacy in northern Farmington on June 16 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and Rambling River Park will be home to the fourth annual Flavors of Farmington. The evening event will include wine tasting, food sampling, an art show and live music. Tickets for the event can be purchased at Farmington Liquors until June 15. Farmington Library has scheduled a variety of teen events beginning June 14, a way to get teens involved Photo by Rick Orndorf and entertained as well. Careful planning has There is always good security during the Farmington Dew Days Grand Parade as several gone into the entire process, units include local law enforcement workers. This year’s parade is being moved from its spot on Sunday to Saturday. See Dew Days, 3B

Dew Days/from 2B in part to address losses incurred two years ago when Dew Days was moved to the Dakota County Fairgrounds. To keep people entertained and downtown, the beer garden will be located near the entertainment stage, and instead of closing in the early evening, its hours have been extended until midnight. Organizers also moved the grand parade time from Sunday afternoon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. By making that change, the parade will end at around dinner time, so fairgoers can take advantage of the wide variety of food offered by the many Dew Days food vendors. Then, visitors can head over to witness which lucky local leader has won the starring role at the Kiss the Pig event, another Dew Days tradition. Back are other popular events, including bed races, Dew Run, the Kiddie Parade and sidewalk chalk

Bed Race

This year’s cruise starts at 7 p.m. leaving from Boeckman Middle School (the old high school), going south to Ash Street (County Road 50) where we will go east to Third, and then follow the parade route through downtown going north on Third Street to Spruce Street, head east one block to Fourth Street and head south back to County Road 50. From there the cars will go on a 15-mile country cruise. The cruise will end downtown for the car show and live music by local band S.R.O. (Standing Room Only). A $150 gift card will be awarded to the Our Family Foods Best Appearing Car. A $100 gift card will be awarded to the Our Family Foods Most Unique Car. Judging will be done after the cruise and right before the live music starts. For more information, call Bruce at (612) 298-0094.

The 27th annual Dew Days Bed Race will start at 6:30 p.m. June 17 in front of the stage by old City Hall garage and run down Oak Street. For those unfamiliar with the event, the Bed Race is a fast and furious obstacle relay that requires teams to compete head-to-head. There are eight runners per team, per heat. Four runners push the bed from the starting line through the approximately one-fifth of a mile long obstacle course to the midway point where there is a challenge station and four runners push the bed to the finish line. Each team may provide up to 12 runners, four of which will serve as alternates should their bed race in more than one heat. Each team will provide one rider for each bed during competition. The riders are referred to as a King or Queen and must be of the opposite gender of the run-

ners, unless it is a team of both men and women. Costumes are encouraged but must not interfere or be a safety concern for runners. The race will be either a single or double elimination event depending on the amount of entries. Runners must be 16 years of age of older; those under 18 must have a parent’s consent. The entry fee is $25 and will go to CEEF. Those entry forms submitted after June 15 will incur a $10 late fee.
